Aimed at the California market, the Los Angeles International Auto Show is the most fuel conscious of the major auto shows. Ford is taking the opportunity to introduce a 3 cylinder version of its updated 2014 Fiesta.
A few days ago, Ford made waves when it brought the engine to LA from Detroit in a suitcase. We all knew which car it would find its way into, and now it has been made official. While most would think they would be sacrificing power, the 1.0-liter EcoBoost actually adds power. Official numbers come in at 123 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque.
The torque figure in particular is impressive. It is up by 36 lb-ft over the 2013’s naturally-aspirated 1.6-liter 4-cylinder. This will become the Fiesta’s standard engine and Ford says that when it goes on sale it will be the most fuel efficient non-hybrid in the United States. That means EPA figures over 45 mpg and likely above.
That is Prius-level fuel economy and the Fiesta is cheaper, more stylish, and a lot more fun to drive. Sounds like a winner. Changes to the Fiesta for 2014 include a redesigned front grille and fascia with new headlights. The result is a lot more refined than the more cartoonish look of the 2013. Ford is keeping the Fiesta fresh and these changes will keep sales momentum up next year.
