2013 Infiniti G37 AWD Coupe Review

2013 Infiniti G37 Coupe

Take a sports car platform, add in rear-wheel drive and finish it with a sport suspension package and you have the 2013 Infiniti G37 Coupe. All the Infiniti G models share the same architecture with the sporty Nissan 370Z and that gives the G37 Coupe a sporty, enthusiast-oriented driving experience. This performance-oriented G37 Coupe also comes with all-wheel-drive for added all-weather performance. The 2013 G37 carries over relatively unchanged for the new model year except for the base trim level has been discontinued, and minor changes to interior trim and colors.

On the outside, the two-door Infiniti G37 coupe looks sportier than the sedan and gets a slightly more powerful engine. It gets larger 19-inch sport wheels giving it a more aggressive look and compliment its exterior design. Everything about the new G37 Coupe is calibrated for the response and excitement that enthusiast drivers are looking for. It all starts inside with a quality first class cabin.

Sport Package offers more driving excitement

Inside, the coupe feels like a two-door sports car. The overall quality of the G37 cabin has improved over the years and the interior fit and finish is first class. The cabin has a more contemporary feel and well suited to the luxury class. Infiniti says the coupe will seat four adults, but rear-seat room is restricted and would only be appropriate for short trips. Access into the rear of the coupe is made easier by a power device with position memory. The front seatbacks tilt forward with a lever and then move forward automatically at the touch of a button.

The G37 coupe AWD ($41,450) comes well equipped and this tester came with the optional Sport Package ($1,950) with sport-tuned suspension, bigger sport brakes, viscous limited slip differential, 19-inch wheels with high-performance tires, and more aggressive front end styling. It also came with magnesium paddle shifters, aluminum pedals, and 12-way power driver sport  seats.

Other optional packages are available like the Technology Package ($1,250) with intelligent cruise control, advanced climate control, and rain sensing wipers. The Premium Package ($3,250) offers features like power moonroof, rear sonar, drivers memory seat, premium audio power tilt/telescoping steering wheel. The Navigation Package ($1,850) adds Nav Traffic, DVD-Video Playback and voice recognition.

A high-tech V6 powerplant

Nissan produces one of the best V6 engines in the world and the 2013 G37 Coupe benefits from the technology. The 3.7-liter V6 engine is more powerful than what’s found under the hood of many competitors. The G37 coupe’s powerplant produces 330 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. It is mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission and is tuned for sporting response. The paddle shifters enable the driver to shift manually for more spirited driving situations.

The 3.7-liter V6 delivers strong acceleration and the 330 horses are available all the way up to maximum rpm. The seven-speed automatic transmission with Drive Sport enables hard acceleration and when the Sport mode is engaged upshifts come at higher rpm, upshifts and downshifts are quicker. A manual shift mode can also be engaged for the transmission to rev-match downshifts. The seven-speed downshifts automatically under moderate-to-heavy braking.

Exhilarating performance

The combination of the 330 horsepower V6 and the Sport package, gives the G37 Coupe sporty handling and makes it exhilarating to drive. The G37 is a car that was designed first and foremost for driving enthusiasts. With the Sport Package, it adds in a performance edge that sets it apart from other coupes on the market.

The 2013 Infiniti G37 AWD coupe is much like a four-seat Nissan 370Z sports car  but more luxurious. It excels at providing a sporty performance-oriented driving experience. The G37 AWD Coupe is priced lower than the German competition and is a good choice for those looking for a quality performance all-weather coupe.

The ability to downshift when in ‘Manual’ mode and hear the engine match the revs in a Heel, toe type manner is just brilliant. The first time I experienced it on the 350Z I was deeply impressed.

Overall, not my cup of tea. If it were the Bavarian equivalent, I could be convinced!
