Turbocharged Scion FR-S Laps Laguna Seca

When it comes to cars, we’re always looking ahead to the next thing. Toyota and Subaru have been hard at work for the past few years on the new FR-S/BRZ sports car, and they didn’t want to answer many questions about future iterations.

Why? Because sometimes talking about future product too soon can depress sales. They just worked on this thing for a long time and don’t want to do that! The main question has primarily been about turbocharged/supercharged power from the car’s flat-four engine. The FR-S makes 197 horsepower and 151 pound feet of torque. Many want more power than that.

The current corporate line is that the FR-S is designed for simplicity and purity. We’ve heard lines about there not being enough room under hood for forced induction plumbing. Somehow we doubt that; you just know more power is in the works at some point…it has to be. A light sportscar with rear-wheel drive like the FR-S begs for more power.

Its no wonder then that Motor Trend reports a turbocharged FR-S was spotted around the track at Laguna Seca. In terms of a production version that doesn’t mean anything per se, but we’ve heard other reports that indicate a boosted FR-S is coming. The reason a turbo FR-S was spotted was likely because it was being tested by the Scion drift team – hence the ridiculous looking wing.

FR-S owners look to be a very mod-happy bunch; over at FT86Club there is a discussion going on about swapping headlights between the Toyota 86/ Scion FR-S and the Subaru BRZ. Apparently they are the same dimensions but have a different inner design. So while the FR-S launches sometime mid-year, you probably don’t have to wait long for extra power. There should be a thriving aftermarket for the FR-S that will be happy to oblige. We just want to know if Scion is working out a special warranty arrangement so these cars can be modded without voiding the factory warranty. That is a valid question….
