Since the brand’s inception in 2003, Scion’s goal has always been to offer something that stands out in a crowd. So far they’ve been pretty successful, with offerings like the xB, xD, tC, iQ and the FR-S. Appealing to a younger audience and offering them something they can’t find in other brands, Scion has carved quite a niche out in the market. Their newest offering aims to further expand their market reach and enter into a new segment of the market with the iM Concept car revealed Wednesday, ahead of its Nov. 19 debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
A five-door compact hatchback (B-segment), the Scion iM Concept definitely fits in the vein of the Scion models that came before with an eye towards style. In the styling department the iM Concept takes cues from the touring cars that populate the European race circuits. In concept form the car has a look that is much more aggressive then any of the other cars in the segment, but it is still a concept.
Wearing a custom-blended “Incrediblue” paint it seems a shame not to have gold wheels, although it may be seen as a little too Subaru.
Sticking with the racecar derived styling the iM Concept has wide aerodynamics and a lowered ride height giving it an aggressive appearance. Performance tires will be wrapped around 19-inch forged alloy wheels, which as I mentioned before are sadly not gold, but gunmetal. Stopping for the iM Concept will be vented front rotors and four piston calipers. Ride weight will be adjustable with a racing suspension completing the racecar-inspired design. Normally I think this term is thrown around way too much but in this case it seems to fit as it would be a surprise to see this running in the British Touring Car Championship, or the World Touring Car Championship with some additional changes.
As with other offerings from Scion, the iM Concept is aimed at a younger demographic. The iM Concept seems to bring together characteristics from multiple models in the range, marring the utility of the xB and the sporting prowess of the FR-S.
“The tastes of today’s younger buyers have evolved. They want a car that provides excitement and individuality, as well as the comfort, technology and reliability that Scion offers,” Scion Vice President Doug Martha said. “The iM Concept combines sleek styling with the versatility of a modern hatchback to catch the eye of Scion customers. Stay tuned for more on how we will bring this vision to the road.”
Scion will hold their press conference at 3:40 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 19.
