The Chrysler lineup is famous for its practical yet modern minivans that make great options for families that spend a lot of time on the road. An unexpected breakdown can put a damper on any road trip, which is when the Chrysler warranty comes into play.

In our guide, find out what a new Chrysler warranty covers and what’s left out. Then, we’ll explain what to do once your warranty expires and how an extended warranty could help you save on expensive repairs.

When your car or minivan is new, you don’t expect it to need many repairs, but breakdowns become more likely as vehicles age. Your Chrysler warranty only covers fixes for your first few years of ownership, but a plan from one of the best extended warranty companies can cover your vehicle long-term. Chrysler Warranty Overview

New Chrysler vehicles come with a manufacturer’s bumper-to-bumper warranty. The Chrysler warranty includes three years or 36,000 miles of coverage. This covers repairs for almost all of your car’s systems, but there are important exclusions. For example, regular wear and tear is not covered under a Chrysler warranty.

Chryslers have several other types of warranties in addition to the bumper-to-bumper coverage.

Chrysler Warranty Type Coverage Period What Does It Cover?
Basic Limited Warranty Coverage (Bumper-to-Bumper) 3 years/36,000 miles This protects almost every part and system of your car that was installed before it left the factory. Repairs are made at no cost to you only if the parts are damaged due to poor workmanship or faulty parts.
Powertrain Limited Warranty 5 years/60,000 miles This covers all parts and systems related to your car’s powertrain system: the engine, transmission, all-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, and four-wheel drive.
Anti-Corrosion Perforation Warranty All panels: 3 years, unlimited miles. Outer panels: 5 years, unlimited miles This warranty covers the cost to repair sheet metal that rusts due to corrosion from the inside out.
Emissions Warranty Up to 8 years/80,000 miles Many emissions parts are covered under the Basic Limited Warranty, but the catalytic converter and powertrain control module are protected for longer. Chrysler adheres to California Emissions standards as well.
Mopar® Parts & Accessories Limited Warranty Varies based on part This covers a long list of Mopar parts, such as the battery, Corning Gorilla Glass, and gaskets and seals.

An extra perk under the Basic Limited Warranty is that it covers brakes (drums, linings, rotors, and pads), wiper blades, clutch discs or modular clutch assemblies, windshields and rear windows, and wheel aligning and balancing. Protection doesn’t last the full bumper-to-bumper term, but these items aren’t always covered under a manufacturer’s warranty.

If you sell your car with a warranty still in effect, the new owner gets the remaining coverage of the warranty. For example, if you purchase a new Pacifica minivan and sell it after one year and 12,000 miles, the new owner still has two years or 24,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper warranty coverage.

Previous Chrysler Powertrain Warranties

Chrysler used to offer a five-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty for new vehicles. This changed to the current five-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty starting for model year 2016 vehicles. If you have a 2015 Chrysler, you could still be covered under the five-year, 100,000-mile powertrain warranty, depending on when your car officially went into service.

Chrysler Warranty for Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles

Even if you don’t buy a new Chrysler, you could still have a Chrysler warranty. Certified pre-owned (CPO) Chrysler vehicles are used cars that meet certain age and mileage restrictions. Unlike a non-certified used car, CPO vehicles undergo a rigorous inspection by certified technicians.

All CPO Chryslers come with a limited warranty. Chrysler CPO warranties require you to pay a deductible for each repair visit. Check out the chart below for more information about CPO Chrysler warranty coverage.

CPO Chrysler Warranty Type Coverage Period What Does It Cover?
Powertrain Limited Warranty 7 years/100,000 miles from the original new car sale date. This covers the repair of engine, transmission, and driveline systems.
Maximum Care Warranty 3 months/3,000 miles from the sale date as a CPO vehicle or at the expiration of the original new car limited warranty. Over 5,000 named components in your vehicle are covered.

You can transfer the CPO Chrysler warranty if you sell the vehicle and the warranty hasn’t expired. There is a $150 transfer fee to move a CPO warranty to the new owner.

Exclusions In Chrysler Warranties

One of the biggest restrictions of manufacturer warranties is what qualifies a part for coverage under the warranty. To receive repairs at no cost to you, the damage must be from faulty parts, poor workmanship, or defective materials.

Some things your Chrysler warranty doesn’t cover include:

  • Regular maintenance needs (oil changes, cleaning)
  • Damages due to wear and tear from normal driving activity
  • Environmental damage (tree sap, ocean spray, road hazards, etc.)
  • Modifications added after the vehicle left the plant (installing non-genuine parts)

Chrysler Reliability & Repair Costs

When shopping for a new Chrysler or deciding whether to purchase an extended Chrysler warranty, it’s helpful to check dependability ratings, so you know what repairs to expect. Chrysler vehicles have average ratings. The J.D. Power 2020 U.S. Vehicle Dependability StudySM ranks Chrysler in the middle among automakers. In November 2019, Consumer Reports ranked the 2020 Chrysler Pacifica as the second-least-reliable vehicle. RepairPal gives Chrysler a score of 3.5 out of 5.0.

This doesn’t mean you should stay away from the Pacifica or other models. We even think the Pacifica Hybrid Limited is a great fit for families. Not to mention it comes with a stylish, upscale interior, and the hybrid model gives you excellent efficiency. To combat lower reliability ratings, you’ll need to consider how to pay for repairs long term.

With help from RepairPal, we’ve listed some of the most common repairs for Chryslers below.

Chrysler Model Common Repair Cost Range
2017 Chrysler Pacifica Alternator Replacement $870–$922
2018 Chrysler Pacifica Air Bag Control Module Replacement $1,066–$1,088
2017 Chrysler 300 Head Gasket Replacement $1,223–$1,515
2016 Chrysler Town & Country Power Sliding Door Motor Replacement $566–$593
2019 Chrysler 300 Radiator Fan Motor Replacement $313–$345

Like all cars, your Chrysler is more likely to have mechanical issues the longer you drive it. You can plan ahead for the cost of repairs with an extended warranty.

Is A Chrysler Extended Warranty Right for You?

The Chrysler warranty helps protect your car when you first drive it off the lot. However, the limitations and short warranty period can leave your car unprotected only a few years after you buy it.

A Chrysler extended warranty provides additional protection for your car. You can purchase one when your manufacturer’s warranty is in place and get additional protection not covered by the factory warranty. Once the manufacturer’s warranty expires, your car is still protected by the Chrysler extended warranty.

You may see extended warranties called a “vehicle service contract” or protection plan. That’s because extended warranties aren’t a true warranty at all. Instead, an extended warranty is a contract between you and a provider that helps cover car repairs that happen over time.

Chrysler Extended Warranty Vs. Third-Party Warranty Companies

An extended warranty is a great way to avoid paying completely out-of-pocket for expensive car repairs. There are two options when choosing protection for your Chrysler:

  • Mopar Vehicle Protection Plans
  • Independent extended warranty contracts

Mopar, a name formed from the words “motor” and “parts,” is the parts and service division of Chrysler. You can only purchase a Mopar extended warranty from your Chrysler dealer. Third-party warranty companies provide vehicle service contracts for almost any vehicle and aren’t tied to one brand or automaker.

So, which one is the better choice?

Pros & Cons of Mopar’s Chrysler Extended Warranty

The extended Chrysler warranty from Mopar includes two service plans options for new and pre-owned vehicles. Mopar no longer offers a lifetime extended warranty option on Chrysler vehicles, but you can purchase coverage for up to eight years.

Plan Name Coverage For Coverage Options What’s Covered?
MVP Maximum Care Plus New vehicles Up to 8 years, 150,000 miles Comprehensive coverage except for named exclusions. Coverage includes the engine, transmission, electrical, driveline, steering, safety components, and body mechanisms.
Added Care Plus New vehicles Up to 8 years, 150,000 miles Over 800 named components are covered. Covered systems include the engine, transmission, driveline, steering, and cooling.
Maximum Care Pre-owned vehicles Up to 5 years, unlimited miles All parts of your vehicle are covered, except named exclusions.
Added Care Plus for Pre-Owned Vehicles Pre-owned vehicles Up to 5 years, unlimited miles Over 800 named parts of your vehicle are covered.

Pros of a Mopar Service Contract:

  • Transferable with a $50 fee
  • Repairs made with Genuine Mopar parts
  • Convenient to purchase at the dealership
  • Includes additional benefits like roadside assistance

Cons of a Mopar Service Contract:

  • Limited plan options
  • No plans for high-mileage vehicles
  • Dealer markup causes price inflation
  • Repairs must be made at the dealership
  • Can only be purchased while the car is under the original warranty
  • Choose between $100 or $200 deductible (pre-owned vehicles only)
  • Risk of paying interest on your extended warranty if wrapped into your financing

Which Extended Warranty Will Best Protect Your Chrysler?

You could potentially save thousands of dollars on car repairs with an extended warranty for your Chrysler. Make sure to consider all of your options before you choose a warranty.

A Mopar service contract gives you the convenience of purchasing your protection plan right at the dealership. On the other hand, an extended warranty from a reputable third-party company allows you to save on the cost of your plan and gives you flexibility in plan options.

There are a lot of options for third-party warranty companies, but our top picks are Endurance and CARCHEX. These companies give you plenty of flexible options to protect almost any vehicle, not just a Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Jeep, or Ram.

Endurance: Best Overall

We’ve compared every major extended warranty provider in the industry in areas like cost and coverage, and Endurance came out on top due to its many positive reviews and high customer satisfaction rates.

Endurance offers a total of six levels of coverage. The first five are extended warranties with varying levels of coverage to protect against mechanical breakdowns. The last Endurance plan, EnduranceAdvantage, combines extended auto warranty coverage and prepaid maintenance.

  1. You buy a $36000 Chrysler 300 & the front rotor is warped. I have 25000 miles on the car and service says it’s not covered under the 36000 mile bumper to bumper warranty. It’s a faulty part, well wouldn’t that fall under a warranty item?

  2. I purchased a jeep trail hawk 2016 l have 110 Thousand kilometers ,l was told by dealerships Maskoka Chrysler that my Ac converter had disintegrated and that the warranty on this part was 3 years or 60 Thousand kilometers. I always been of the belief that Ac converters had a 10 to 15 year manufacturers warranty.Pleas advise.
