New York, New Chevy: Upgraded 2014 Camaro SS Set for Premiere

2014 Chevrolet Camaro SS

It is hard to believe four years has passed since the Chevrolet Camaro came back to life. Ending resentment for the most foolish decision made by General Motors, the bowtie-branded pony car returned to production in the middle of 2009. First sold in 1966 as a challenger to the Ford Mustang, the Camaro‘s reincarnation in 2009 was at the height of gloomy time in the automotive industry. Adhering to the fun-loving character of the first generation car, the recent Chevrolet Camaro was a vehicle worth saving. The Camaro SS, convertible and later the super high-performance ZL1 edition feature Chevrolet’s classic driving passion. Ultimately, the new Camaro received a supporting role in General Motors‘ recovery. At the 2014 New York International Auto Show, Chevrolet appreciation for the Camaro is being shown with a refreshed 2014 model.

Ahead of the March 27th unveiling of the V8-powered Chevrolet Camaro SS model, General Motors has supplied a teaser shot of the new car. A teaser image teasing little detail of the 2014 Camaro SS, we should not expect anything radical. Do not anticipate a Chevrolet Camaro redesign to the extent of the 2014 Corvette Stingray. Still, Chevrolet has affirmed 2014 model year Camaros will feature “significant change“.

Forecast suggest substantial revisions for the next Camaro’s powertrain. An influencing factor for the 2014 model Camaro is the presence of the SS sedan. Featuring a six-speed automatic transmission, the 2014 Chevrolet SS sedan will actually out power the automatic-equipped Camaro SS. To preserve the stature of the Chevrolet Camaro SS, there are rumours horsepower will be upgraded. Some reports claim the 2014 Corvette Stingray’s high-tech LT1 engine might be destined for the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro SS. While the current Camaro SS V8 engines already have Active Fuel Management, the LT1 would add gasoline direct injection and variable valve timing to the 2014 model.

This week, Cadillac announced their first twin-turbocharged engine will be added to the 2014 CTS. A 3.6 liter forced-induction powerplant, the Cadillac CTS and XTS will generate 420 horsepower. Recently, reports have swirled that the next Ford Mustang will include a turbocharged V6 as an available engine choice. There could be an approach steering away from V8 engines for optimum power. It might make for interesting news if the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro would include a variation of the Cadillac’s twin-turbocharged power unit. The twin-turbo Camaro is a reach but anything is possible.

While the design of the new 2014 Chevrolet Camaro is yet to be public, one detail has already been locked up relating to future production last year. For the first time since 1992, the Chevrolet Camaro will be constructed inside of the United States late 2015. General Motors is moving Camaro’s production from Oshawa, Ontario to the Lansing, Michigan plant that already produces the Cadillac ATS and CTS. The 2014 Camaro styling at the 2013 New York International Auto Show will be the last Canadian Camaros (and possibly the first Michigan-built models).
