First Look: 2016 Ford Edge

The Ford Edge was completely redesigned inside and out for 2015. So, the 2016 Edge remains unchanged, but the infotainment system is getting a much needed update for this year.  Visually, the new Edge doesn’t look any different than the model it replaced, so when you walk by it at your local Ford Dealership, you might not know which year is which.

Since its launch in mid 2007, the Ford Edge has worked to find its place in the company’s crossover and SUV family. For comparison, the Edge is not as sporty as the Ford Escape nor as practical as the Ford Explorer.

But . . .

Over the years, the Edge has attracted consumers who are looking for an ideal vehicle which blends the best qualities of these two crossovers into one attractive package.

What’s New

The 2016 Ford Edge is based on the Fusion’s CD 4 chassis, unlike its predecessor, which was built on a Mazda chassis. The wheelbase has grown by an inch to 112.2 inches (same length as the Ford Fusion) and the overall length has increased by 3.9 inches, which results in greater rear seat legroom and cargo room.

Outside, the new Edge shares none of its body panels with the previous model, but to retain its identity, the overall design looks similar to the old one.

Inside, the cabin has been completely redesigned with upscale materials and when compared to before, the cabin feels more spacious and luxurious. Like all new Ford models, the Edge offers a host of active and passive safety features and an extensive list of optional creature comforts. Depending on the trim level, optional safety features include, blind-spot monitoring, cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control with lane keeping assist, inflatable rear seat belts, and a 180 degree front-view camera.

The new Ford edge also features an advanced version of the company’s automated parking assistant, which not only parallel parks, but will also back the crossover into a perpendicular spot and pull it out when needed.

Like I said before, the 2016 Edge will receive the updated Sync 3 infotainment system, which is promised to be vastly improved when compared to the current MyFord Touch. Unfortunately, 2015 Ford Edge customers will not be able to upgrade their infotainment systems to the Sync 3 unit because it runs on completely different hardware and software.

Performance

The base engine in the 2016 Ford Edge is a turbocharged and intercooled, DOHC 16-valve 2.0 L inline-four cylinder, which produces 245 horsepower and 275 lb.ft. torque. The optional engine is a naturally-aspirated, DOHC 24-valve 3.5 L V6, which produces 280 horsepower and 250 lb.ft. torque.

The 2016 Ford Edge Sport is powered by a twin-turbo and intercooled, DOHC 24-valve 2.7 L V6, which produces 315 horsepower and 350 lb.ft. torque.

All 2016 Edge models will feature a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode and steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. Power is sent to the front wheels as standard or can be sent to all four wheels via an optional AWD system, which is available with all engine options and trim levels.

Depending on the engine, fuel economy on the 2016 Ford Edge varies between 17 mpg city/20 mpg hwy to 24 mpg city/ 30 mpg hwy.
