Ferrari Unveils 458 Italia at Frankfurt Motor Show

Ferrari 458 Italia

Finally, Ferrari unveils the long-awaited 458 Italia, the replacement for the F430. The 458 Italia is replacing the F430 as the next iteration in the line of Ferrari V8 GT cars. The 458 Italia is all-new from the ground up, not using a single element from the outgoing F430.

It will feature a 4.5-liter naturally aspirated V8 capable of about 570 hp – quite a jump from the F430’s 483 hp – and sports a seven-speed F1 dual-clutch gearbox, which maximizes torque at lower RPMs. 80% of the car’s 398 lb-ft is available at only 3,250 RPM. This allows the 458 Italia to reach 0-62 mph in under 3.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 202 mph – the first V8 GT Ferrari in the 200 mph club.

Ferrari paid special attention to weight for the 458 Italia, achieving an excellent power-to-weight ratio and keeping a near-perfect 58 rear / 42 front weight distribution. Naturally, lots of new F1 tech went into the 458. The integration of the E-Diff and F1-Trac controlled by the same ECU provides 32% better longitudinal acceleration out of corners compared to previous models. The faster and more accurate control logic provides better traction and handling, specifically at the limit. The 458 Italia also has an upgraded interior, providing a new control layout and better ergonomics.

Technically, this is without question the best V8 GT Ferrari has ever made. The technical enhancements are incredible, and I’m sure will provide an unprecedented driving experience. My problem with it is that it’s terribly ugly. It looks great from the side, but the front and rear views are awkward and unpleasant. What a shame for such a fantastic vehicle.
