2017 Toyota 4Runner Boasts New TRD Off-Road Packages

When it first appeared in 1985, the Toyota 4Runner gave customers a chance to experience the great outdoors. The body-on-frame design was conducive for hauling people and cargo while hitting the trails. That history continues with the 2017 Toyota 4Runner, now available in two new grades: TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium.

The new packages for the 4Runner highlight Toyota’s presence in the off-road community. We’ve even had some seat time ourselves with the 4Runner and found it suitable for off-road warriors.

“4Runner owners often take their SUVs off the beaten path, so these new TRD Off-Road grades will be a popular recognition of TRD’s history in the off-road arena,” said John Myers, National Manager, Trucks and SUVs, Toyota Vehicle Marketing and Communications.

CRAWL Capability

Multi-Terrain Select changes the dynamics of the 4Runner for the best performance no matter the terrain. Wheel slip is adjusted accordingly, while an electronic-locking rear differential and Toyota’s Crawl Control (CRAWL) provide additional traction. Crawl Control maintains a consistent speed while maneuvering over or through difficult environments. The technology shifts the transfer case into low range and monitors engine speed and braking force. This keeps the vehicle moving while the driver steers over obstacles without having to operate the gas or brakes.

Suspension Dynamics

Frank Sinatra once said angles are attitude and while he was talking about his hat, the same is true of an off-road suspension, especially one designed for better approach and departures angles. The available Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) allows for extended wheel travel during slow speeds for better stability, ground clearance, and footing.

Terrain Control

When canvassing unstable terrain such as mud or sand, more wheel slip is allowed to the 4Runner’s advantage. A “Mogul” setting compliments uneven conditions, such as V-ditches, slopes, and ridges. Wheel slip is minimized here and the system acts more like a limited slip differential.

Exterior & Interior

The 2017 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road rides on stylish wheels with the TRD Off-Road badge displayed prominently on the C-pillar. The center console has a carbon fiber look, further accented by TRD lettering on the headrests. Unique floor mats handle the mud, dirt, sand, and anything else one could possibly track in.

The 2017 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road looks like its ready for an outing to the high country.

Availability & Longevity

The 2017 4Runner will be available in six grades: SR5, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, Limited, and TRD Pro. Pricing is forthcoming. According to Myers, 90 percent of Toyota 4Runners purchased in the last decade are still in use.

“The 4Runner has a large and loyal following, with dependability being a key factor,” he said.

  1. Umm… My 2010 Trail Edition has all three of these “new” technologies. CRAWL, KDSS & TERRAIN. The trail edition has always been the better trim level instead of TRD in my opinion…

  2. AHHH no. I had a 99′ GC 4X4 and I have 2 99′ 4runners. The GC had sorry reliability. The 4WD system is very comparable if not better in the Toyota. Resale value tells it all.
