Final Look: 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X Final Edition

The current generation of the legendary Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution entered production in Japan in 2007 and made its way to American showrooms in early 2008. After being in production for nearly eight years, the current or the 10th generation of the Lancer Evo is beginning to show its age. Over its long production cycle, the Evo has received little to no upgrades when it comes to appearance, performance or technology and when compared to its direct competitors like the Subaru WRX STI and the Volkswagen Golf R, the Lancer EVO looks and feels a bit dated.

So, after eight long years, Mitsubishi has finally decided to end the production of the current generation Lancer Evolution and is sending the model into the history books by launching a special Lancer Evolution X Final Edition.

First Impression

The “Final Edition” badge will be applied to the last 1000 Lancer Evolution models built this year in Japan. The 2015 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X Final Edition will be based on the Lancer EVO GSR model with a 5-speed manual transmission.

Visually, the Evo X Final Edition does not drastically different from the regular Evo models. The only way one can differentiate the Final Edition model from other Evo models is by spotting the special “Final Edition” badge and the black roof panel.

Performance

Like the regular Lancer Evo GSR on which it is based, the Final Edition Evo X will feature the same 2.0 L MIVEC turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. However, in the Final Edition model, Mitsubishi engineers have added sodium filled exhaust valve into the mix as well. As of this writing, Mitsubishi officials have not released any information regarding the final power output figures from the engine, but according to various sources from around the web, the retuned engine with the special exhaust valve is capable of producing more than 300 horsepower.

The power from the engine is sent to all four wheels via a standard five-speed manual transmission (automatic or dual-clutch transmission is not available as an option).

What’s New

The final 1000 Lancer X Evolutions will feature black leather Recaro seats with red accent stitching, 18-inch gunmetal gray BBS alloy wheels, Bilstein and Eibach suspension components, Brembo brakes, special “Final Edition” badging, and a numbered dash plaque to mark its rarity.

Availability

The final 1000 Lancer Evo X Final Edition models are reserved for the Japanese market only (sorry American and European Lancer Evolution X enthusiasts), and will have a starting price of $35,800.

If you live in Japan, you can pre-order your Evo X Final Edition now and Mitsubishi will begin delivering the cars in August.
