2013 Tesla Model S Moving Toward July Launch

Tesla hasn’t been in the spotlight much lately. Instead, rival Fisker has taken center stage for a host of reasons. Last week, while Fisker showed off the Atlantic Concept in New York, Tesla continued prepping the Model S for a full-scale production launch.

Tesla has proclaimed 2012 as the “Year of the Model S” and all eyes are on the company. Unlike Fisker, Tesla appears to have taken great care with Model S development. It will be interesting to see how the contrast plays out in regard to quality and build issues. On the Tesla Motors blog, the company has announced that “It’s Time To Build Your Model S.”

That means the former NUMMI plant in Freemont, California is about to go online producing the Model S. The moment is finally nearing, and we’re pretty stoked about that. Tesla has announced a July delivery date for the first Model S cars, and they appear to be on their way to achieving that.

While up until now Model S reservation holders just have a car on hold, Tesla is rolling out the next step, which is final delivery specification. That includes customers picking exterior paint, interior color/trim and option packages. Tesla has been listening to customers, fine tuning packages such as the Performance version. It was only going to be available with carbon fiber trim inside, but Tesla is now offering it with Piano Black, Lacewood and Banana Leaf as well.

Bigger news is Tesla Personal Delivery. With this service, included with every Model S, Tesla will deliver your car to the location of your choice. That includes Work, home, your hotel on vacation – “anywhere that makes you smile.” Very cool – and an expensive undertaking we’d think! Along with this delivery, a representative will be there to explain all the features of the Model S. Tesla knows something about customer service. Let’s hope they know something about making money too. The Model S is one of the most exciting debuts of this year, and we can’t wait to experience it. 3 more months!
