The Mercedes Gelandewagen (G-Wagen) was originally designed for military use. However, the armies of the world never seemed too interested in roving their conquered lands in…something from Germany.
But the world has changed.
Today, oil companies can destroy entire oceans. People drive into trees, because they’re too busy texting. And, Lindsay Lohan’s probation violations make the evening news.
So, maybe the world is ready for a Hitler-Spec Mercedes.
Introduced at a recent military equipment…show…in France. The Mercedes G-Wagen LAPV (Light Armored Patrol Vehicle) 6.X concept features everything that a four-star General could want.
The truck has full ballistic protection, thanks to modular armour plates, which can be changed in the field…if they become damaged. There’s also a mine deflector plate in the floor.
Underneath the orange-wheeled monster is a state-of-the art suspension. It has variable lift coil-over air shocks that can be adjusted while driving. They also provide an enormous 18 inches of ground clearance.
Power comes from a high-torque common rail Diesel…which can propel the truck, and a ton of payload to a top speed of 93 mph.
Stopping power is equally impressive, with a performance hydraulic braking system, and huge vented disks at all four wheels.
The LAPV 6.X also has an individual tIre inflation system…that can detect surface conditions, then adjust each tire’s air pressure for better traction.
Mercedes teamed with military technology supplier EADS for all of the electronics, which include;
EADS vehicle data recorder system to automatically document vital mission data such as position, data link and vehicle usage status.
EADS integrated communication system for UHF or VHF bands including a mobile Tetrapol base station for radio coverage out of a range of other networks
EADS integrated mobile command, control and information system for seamless relay of commands through all levels.
EADS jamming system for greater security, flexibility and scalability.
This Merc will definitely add some bling to the battle field.
