In the 50th year of Lamborghini’s first venture into the supercar business, 2013 has been a period where the company has celebrated with pompous designs and massive horsepower. How else should an exotic car manufacturer ring in a golden anniversary? The ultra limited Veneno and now the super radical Egoista concept car make clear Lamborghini is still charting a future packed with buzz-worthy exotic rides.

While Ferruccio Lamborghini’s Italian automaker was developing a reputation for building likable performance machines through the 1960s, cars like the Espada and even the ground-breaking Miura were outshined by cars coming from national rival Ferrari. Creating their newest vehicles in the lessons learned from the mid-engined Miura, Lamborghini contacted the Bertone design house and designer Marcello Gandini in the execution of a new futuristic supercar. First displayed as a concept car at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show under the name LP 500, the Lamborghini Countach was forged. Produced between 1974 and 1990, the Countach has resided on many bedroom walls of as the premier choice of all car posters.

The Lamborghini Countach’s shape grew from a sketchpad to become an icon. The wedged-shaped aluminum body was all the rage in the early 1970s. Straightening the curves associated with sports cars of the 1950s and 1960s, the principle behind the wedged-shaped vehicle design was honed for stability at high speeds. Ferrari BB512, Lotus Espirt and the De Tomaso Pantera were a few sports car builders working on a similar aerodynamic premise. For the Countach, the result was a supercar achieving a drag coefficient of 0.42. Unimpressive by today’s standards of advanced aerodynamic mechanics, the Lamborghini Countach’s airflow was noteworthy for its time. For entry by a driver and passenger, the scissor-opening door on the Countach became a trademark for future Lamborghini design. The body is based on tubular steel frame giving the Countach race car-like handling and driving performance.

Despite the Countach’s shape and structure remaining intact, the supercar went through upgrades. Over a 16-year production run, alterations to the Countach saw wider tires, a front spoiler and the bulky, unattractive but necessary front bumper. On later versions, a large rear wing would be infamously available on the Countach. Appearing functional, the option rear wing was actually a performance hindrance that resulted in a lower top speed.

Powered by a mid-mounted V-12 engine, the Lamborghini Countach was first a carbureted powerplant with a 3.929-liter displacement. Generating 375 horsepower, the 1974 Countach’s V-12 was considered quite a powerhouse. The engine power was enough to propel the first cars past 175 miles per hour. On the LP5000 version of the Countach released in 1982, the engine was enlarged to 4.8 liters allowing the supercar to offer more torque. Peak performance came in 1985 when Lamborghini introduced the Countach LP5000S Quattrovalvole model. Upgrading the engine size once again to a 5.2-liter displacement, the LP5000S Quattrovalvole gave the Countach’s powerplant a four-valve per cylinder layout. In Europe, the later model Countach motored with 455 horsepower and 369 pounds-feet of torque. With 0 to 60-mile per hour acceleration in around five seconds, the European Lamborghini Countach could achieve a 183-mile per hour top speed. American bound Countachs alternatively produced 420 horsepower due a fuel injection system replacing the carburetor setup.

Entering the marketplace on similar timing as the first Porsche 911 Turbo, the Lamborghini Countach lifted an Italian automaker to the peak of motorized envy. The release of the Countach corresponded in the aftermath of the oil crisis and economic imbalance. The 1974 model year was a humbling experience for the car, as only 23 cars were sold. Similar to the beginning of the Chevrolet Corvette, success in the performance car world took time for the Countach. Originally, the Lamborghini Countach had to be privately imported into the United States due to emission rules. Wealthy, supercar-crazed motorists needed to source their ride through an automotive grey market. It was not until 1982 when the Countach was officially available in the country. Yes, cabin space was limited, fuel economy was poor and the price crossed the six-figure level after the mid-1980s but elite motorists desperately wanted it. Over 2,000 examples of the Lamborghini Countach were produced for worldwide demand.

Production of the Countach officially ended on July 4th of 1990. Making way for the Lamborghini Diablo, the Countach was a massive leap for supercar design many have attempted (mostly in vain,) to replicate.

Since 1974, Porsche has consistently pursued the power plateaus that turbocharging on the 911 sports car. Four decades with turbocharger technology has given Porsche a distinction of championing the technology ahead of many other, larger automakers. Approaching the 40th anniversary since the first 911 Turbo was introduced, Porsche has decided to commemorate the milestone in the same famous as the 50th for the Porsche 911 with a completely reengineered vehicle. Constructed on the new 911 platform, the 2014 model year Turbo and Turbo S sports cars will be the cure to performance seekers not content with 400 horsepower of the Porsche 911 Carrera S.

The 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo and Turbo S have been created as the next evolution of the vehicle incorporating new traits never seen on predecessors. The exterior of the new 911 Turbo utilizes active aerodynamics through a three-position adjustable front spoiler and rear wing under pneumatic control. Full-LED headlamps are optional on the Porsche 911 Turbo model but standard equipment on the 911 Turbo S package. Advertised as the widest body of all of the 911, the Porsche 911 Turbo has been presented with a considerably larger stance. Almost three inches wider than the rear-wheel drive Porsche 911, the 911 Turbo also possesses a significantly wider rear track. The Porsche 911 Turbo rides on 20-inch forged aluminum wheels designed specifically for the new car. At 3,516 and 3,538 pounds in weight, the Porsche 911 Turbo models will be heaviest version of the sports car. The inclusion of multiple performance and handling features is the likely culprit for the increased weight. No worries, the enhancements incorporated on the 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo and Turbo S will outweigh the increased bulk.

Both the 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo and the 911 Turbo S move through the Porsche Traction Management all-wheel drive system. A host of Porsche handling and management technologies are incorporated into the new 911 Turbo. Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control active anti-roll system and PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) is included the new 911 Turbo sports car. Optional Porsche Carbon Ceramic Composite Brakes and the Sport Chrono Package Plus would permit a driver to fully extract the driving bliss of the German machine.

For the next-generation Porsche 911 Turbo, all-wheel drive will also feature all-wheel steering. Rear wheel steering will debut on all 2014 model year 911 Turbo sports cars. A technology working on electro-mechanical actuators, the rear wheels can turn up to 2.8 degrees on the 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo. Under 31 miles per hour, the rear wheels will pivot in an opposing direction. At speeds above 50 miles per hour, the rear wheels will steer in the same direction as the front improving directional control. Porsche states the rear wheel steering system is similar to expanding the wheelbase by 19.6 inches at high speeds. Able to handle a turning of 34.8 feet, Porsche 911 Turbo’s rear steering system tightens the turn by 1.6 feet. Attempted famously on Japanese vehicles as well as on General Motors pickup trucks, the concept of four-wheel steering has not been largely successful. Obviously, Porsche believes the addition of rear wheel steering on the new 911 Turbo models will be the ‘turning’ point for the technology.

Powering the high-tech, all-wheel drive sports car preceded by a storied tradition, the 40th year of turbocharging the Porsche 911 will offer a fantastically loud cheer. Two turbocharger units using Porsche’s variable turbine geometry is attached to a 3.8 liter flat-six cylinder engine. Improvements to the 2014 model year’s powerplant have resulted in moderate horsepower gains over the previous 911 Turbo. The new Porsche 911 Turbo pumps out 520 horsepower. Presenting a 30 horsepower boost over its predecessor, the 911 Turbo S variant expels 560 horsepower. A traditional manual transmission choice has not been declared for the 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo. The lack of a stick shift is definitely going to send some sports car purists into a rage if they cannot accept a dual-clutch transmission. A modernized version of the PDK (Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe) gearbox will have the task of handling the turbocharged power from the flat six-cylinder engine. Seven speeds from the PDK transmission will not only provide the responsive performance Porsche 911 Turbo owners expect but will participation in saving fuel. The new Porsche 911 Turbo adds auto start/stop capability allowing the engine to shut down when coming to a stop or while coasting.

Improved performance technology of the Porsche 911 Turbo and Turbo S heightens the aggressive street legal personality to new levels. Adding the optional Sport Chrono Package Plus, acceleration from a standstill to 60 miles per hour requires 3.2 seconds. With the influence of 560 horsepower, the Porsche 911 Turbo S can jump from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 2.9 seconds. The Porsche Turbo S can achieve a top speed of 198 miles per hour (three more than the previous model).

A mix of gripping performance and high-end comfort, the atmosphere inside the 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo’s cabin has been tastefully upgraded on the new sports car. A Bose sound system is standard on the Porsche 911 Turbo while a high-quality Burmester system is available at an extra cost. The 911 Turbo S model receives exclusive interior trim comprising of a unique black and Carrera Red colouring. Sport Seats Plus featuring 18-way adjustment and a memory function is also standard on the Turbo S. Some of the Porsche 911 Turbo’s most interesting driver features are geared for safety. Along with radar cruise control, the 911 Turbo provides available technology using a camera that recognizes road signs and speed limits. Similar traffic warning technology has been rolled out on BMW and Volvo products.

Appropriately priced for an upgraded Porsche 911, the 520-horsepower 911 Turbo model starts at $148,300. For the high-powered 560-horsepower Porsche 911 Turbo S, the manufacturers suggested price jumps to $181,100. Arrival of the first 911 platform-based Turbo models is scheduled to reach the United States in the latter part of this year.

This is a terrific time to be a speed demon with a bank account fill of money. Conversely, it is also a terrible time for the banks when they realize vast amounts of cash flowing towards the purchase of fine, high performance automobiles. With automakers borrowing racetrack inspiration in a volume unseen since the 1960s, we have recently been witness to several new examples of unbridled performance. Deemphasizing the use of infotainment solutions and other creature comforts that outrage sports car purists, a growing list of 2013 and 2014 model year street performers are poised to add an extra edge to the exhilaration of driving. Chrysler division SRT announced a 33-vehicle release of a lightweight Viper T/A model at the 2013 New York Auto Show. In the General Motors section of the past New York exhibition, the return of the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 presented a raw, street legal track athlete. Nissan becomes the latest name contributing a track-oriented vehicle using their already fierce GT-R supercar as the platform.

A limited edition release capped at just 150 cars for the United States, the 2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition supplies a driver to chance to wheel an aggressive production version of Japan‘s greatest current supercar. By first examination, the 2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition’s array of features is reminiscent of the Black Edition. Special black 20-inch RAYS forged wheels and dry carbon fiber rear spoiler are carried over to the 2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition. However, a series of minor touches prove to be major identifiers to something special.

Maintaining the Premium level GT-R twin-turbocharged, 3.8 liter V-6 intact as a 545 horsepower screamer, the Track Edition upgrades are by no means cosmetic. While the technologically advanced ride continues to feature the Bilstein DampTronic suspension system, race course tuning performed at the Germany’s famed Nurburgring was used to enhance the 2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition. Enlisting former professional racing pilot and current Nissan test driver Toshio Suzuki to shakedown the supercar, the 2014 GT-R Track Edition rides on a uniquely calibrated suspension setup. The addition of functional carbon fiber air inlets provide a racing-chic touch for the supercar. Brake cooling is also given a boost on the 2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition using modified guides to allow the Brembo supplied braking to breathe easier. A Track Edition specific front spoiler is also noted on the limited Nissan GT-R model.

The 2014 GT-R Track Edition to register a lower weight compared to Premium and Black Edition trim. Curb weight of the 2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition model is rated at 3,796 pounds (22 pounds lighter than the Black Edition). The majority of the weight savings is a result of the deletion of the rear seat. Instead of the standard Nissan GT-R’s 2+2 cockpit featuring a backseat that frequently punishes occupants with the tight and cramped accommodations, the GT-R Track Edition places a quilted cloth mat in where the seating would be placed. For the driver and the passenger, leather-appointed Recaro seats present a blue/gray pattern.

A vehicle available only at select Nissan dealerships, pricing for the United States-bound 2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition is announced at $115,710. Almost $16,000 more than a 2014 GT-R Premium trim version and $5,410 above the GT-R Black Edition, there will be at least 150 individuals who will find the adrenaline-packed sensation of the Track Edition model as money will spent.

The mid-to-late 1990s was a glorious renaissance period for performance cars. Formula 1 inspiration created the McLaren F1 using a BMW V-12 engine to become the then-fastest production car in the world. The Dodge Viper introduced in 1992 refined itself into a formidable performance coupe. The C5 version of the Chevrolet Corvette brought world-class speed and refinement back to the American sports car. At the very top, supercars took center stage in sports car racing as rules allowed super-limited production vehicles to compete in top classes at races such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. In 1997, the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR presided as one of those exceptionally developed racecars of the time.

Shortly after the original DTM Series folded in 1996, Mercedes-Benz devoted their motorsports resources to building a race vehicle to compete in the FIA GT Championship. In preparations for a 1997 championship starting in mid-April, Mercedes-Benz engaged in a rather swift development for what would be the CLK-GTR. Using computer aided design and clay modeling, AMG needed just 128 days to allow the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR to evolve from concept to race track-ready. Mercedes-Benz and AMG may have leapfrogged the construction of their racecar by studying the competitor of the time. Reports have indicated Mercedes-Benz secretly reverse-engineered a McLaren F1 in the creation of their speed machine. A picture of a modified test mule has confirmed this to be the case.

Presenting the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR in racing trim as well as a street version, the FIA granted entrance of the German supercar ahead of a four-hour event at the Hockenheimring. Wearing the badging and characteristics of a production coupe (even a hood ornament), the CLK-GTR racecar shared few Mercedes CLK parts. A purebred racecar featuring the earth-shaking power of a mid-mounted V-12, the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR was exclusively shaped with carbon fiber bodywork (more common today but considered highly exotic in the 1990s). Butterfly-style doors on the vehicle allowed easier driver changes during the course of a FIA GT Championship event. The headlamps and the front grille remain the only carryover pieces from the more conventional Mercedes-Benz CLK in the creation of their GT1 racecar.

Campaigned within the GT1 category through AMG-Mercedes in 1997, the McLaren F1 fielded by BMW Motorsport would not concede superiority. It was not until the fourth race at the Nurburgring that a Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR piloted by Bernd Schneider and Klaus Ludwig would be at the top of the podium. However, after that initial win, the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR cruised to victory in five of the final seven races of the 1997 FIA GT Championship. Resulting in a driver’s championship for Bernd Schneider, the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR GT1 car late season dominance gave the AMG-Mercedes organization the team championship.

In 1998, the pace of motorsports development relegated the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR out-of-date. Competing in two races (sailing to victory in both cases), Mercedes-AMG would replace the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR with the CLK-LM (an upgraded variant of the previous racecar). Bernd Schneider partnered with future Red Bull Racing Formula 1 driver Mark Webber recorded the CLK-GTR’s last FIA GT Championship win. Privateer organization Persson Motorsport respectably ran the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR through the remainder of the 1998 FIA GT Championship but didn’t capture a victory. Unlike the McLaren F1 or its corporate successor the CLK-LM, the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR would never race at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

In respect to homologation rules of the 1997 GT1 class cars, Mercedes-Benz needed to produce a minimum of 25 street legal versions of the CLK-GTR. That was fulfilled the following year. Buyers of the road-going version of the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR enjoyed almost all the styling and performance characteristics of the FIA GT Championship winning variant. 20 of the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTRs were coupes while the remaining five were produced as convertibles by H.W.A. GmbH (a motorsport company created Hans-Werner Aufrecht in 1998 after Mercedes-Benz wholly acquired AMG). The only major difference is a body-integrated rear wing replaced the race vehicle’s tail. Two-piece luggage set, battery charger and a first aid kit would come with the CLK-GTR road car.

The 25 Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR models actually featured a larger displacement engine than the racecar. Fitted with a 6.9 liter version of the M120 V-12 powerplant, the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR street car pumped out roughly the same horsepower as the 1997 GT1 racing sports car. An exception to this performance equality is an ultra-rare SuperSport model was given a larger 7.3 liter V-12 engine capable of 720-horsepower. Only two Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR SuperSport models are known to exist with the horsepower upgrade. August of 2012, a 1998 Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR SuperSport road car fetched $1,100,000 at the RM Auction in Monterey.

An impressive machine constructed during a very brief period where GT1 racing resulted from extreme supercars, the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR risks being one of those forgotten vehicles. Not enjoying the fanfare of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren or the current SLS AMG, the CLK-GTR short sports car racing career is still a legendary feat.

And the battle for the fastest car in the world continues. Not long ago, Hennessey’s only car they make from scratch (they’re usually a tuner for American muscle cars,) beat the Guinness world record for a 0-300 km/h run by accomplishing it in only 13.63 seconds – besting the record previously held by the incredible Koenigsegg Agera R.

Now, just a few days ago, Hennessey is saying they just grabbed the title of “Fastest top speed in a production car” previously held by the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport. You can check out our updated list of fastest cars in the world for more info on others in the running.

But you’ll see that the Venom GT is under the Veyron still. The Venom GT hit 265.7 mph while the Veyron’s top speed was 267.8. How is Hennessey claiming the top speed record then?

Thing is, the Veyron ran its top speed unrestricted; the model you (well, some people) can actually buy is electronically limited to 258 mph – under the Venom GT’s unrestricted top speed, making it the fastest production car in the world from the factory. Plus, Hennessey ran this on a 2.9 mile track while the Veyron had 5.6 miles to complete its journey.

Hennessey says if they had the same amount of room, they could get to a speed of over 275 mph.

Personally, I think the Venom GT is a more impressive car and given the same conditions could knock Bugatti’s machine down a few notches. The car runs on a twin-turbo 7.0-liter V8 engine that produces 1,244 hp. In contrast, the Veyron Super Sport gets 1,200 hp with a quad-turbo W16.

Only 29 Hennessey Venom GTs will be made, and a third of those are spoken for. If you have $1.2+ million sitting around and want the quickest (officially) and fastest (unofficially) car in the world, you can still give Hennessey a call and claim one for yourself.

Which car do you think is more impressive? Check out the video and photo gallery of the top speed run below:

Being the year of the snake on the Chinese zodiac calendar, 2013 is a marvellous year to reintroduce the passion and enthusiasm of the Chrysler’s majestic Viper sports car. Almost a year since the return of the Viper as the halo vehicle of SRT, 640 horses of American supercar muscle still resonates a bite with motoring enthusiasts. Mounting a return to the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, the SRT Viper GTS-R vehicles bravely fought against established GT organizations fielding the Chevrolet Corvette C6R ZR1 and Ferrari F458 Italia. The 2013 Sebring resulted with a 5th place from the top-placed #91 Viper. Introduced at last year’s New York International Auto Show, the SRT Viper reappears at the 2013 exhibition with a rare, special edition model. The 2014 SRT Viper TA (Time Attack) pushes the V10 powered performance car towards optimized speed and handling.

From first sight, the 2014 SRT Viper TA instantly shows it means business. A unique Crusher Orange paint colour covers the Viper TA paying homage to the muscle car character of the 1960s. Black 2D TA logos stand out on the bright SRT Viper body. Besides the aesthetic pleasure the Viper TA’s exterior presents, the body is the starting point for enhancing the SRT vehicle’s already-high performance credentials. Carbon fiber front splitter and rear spoiler adds immediate focus towards a time attack package. Pirelli P Zero Corso tires spin on lightweight Sidewinder II wheels. Peeking through the wheels, you’ll also see brake calipers painted with a black anodized finish.

A package created with input from racers, the 2014 SRT Viper TA receives a completely reengineered suspension and chassis. Suited for manoeuvres at near-torturing stresses, the special edition TA package excels in providing capable handling. Featuring firmer dampening than the Viper GTS, the 2014 SRT Viper TA finds increased road-holding ability through two-mode, driver-adjustable Bilstein Damptronic shock absorbers. Upgrading from the aluminum structural X-brace, a lighter but stronger carbon fiber brace maintains the integrity of the 2014 SRT Viper TA. SRT claims the 2014 Viper TA model’s chassis structure integrates 50 percent greater torsional rigidity.

Inside the two-person cockpit of the 2014 SRT Viper TA, a black overall shade is set-off by Crusher Orange accent stitching. Seating, steering wheel, upper doors, and the shifter are some spots highlighted through the stitch detailing. Driver and passenger ride in premium ballistic fabric racing seats sourced from renowned motorsport name Sabelt. Sculpted using a resin transfer molding method, the process is instrumental for the 2014 SRT Viper TA’s lightweight seating. The Sabelt racing seats feature three-point seatbelts with the option to add a six-point racing harness.

Accounting all the weight-saving modifications, the 2014 SRT Viper TA tips the scale at 3,348 pounds. The TA edition of the Viper sports car is 83 pounds lighter than the standard Viper GTS and 26 pounds less than the curb weight of the SRT Track Package version. Shaving off some pounds, the Pirelli tires can make better use of the engine’s horsepower than ever before. The TA model features the handcrafted, all-aluminum 8.4 liter V10 engine beats under the iconic long hood of the SRT Viper. Churning out the same 640 horsepower and 600 pounds feet of torque as a Viper GTS, weight reductions under the TA modifications will naturally make for a more energetic, slipperier snake. While straight line acceleration could see a boost, road course performance with the TA package should be the most thrilling endeavour. The 2014 Viper TA’s brake system, created in cooperation with Brembo is up to the task of controlling the wild 640 horses.

The TA-equipped SRT Vipers go on sale during the third quarter of this year. A short production run assures the Crusher Orange vehicle will crush many hearts. Production of the special edition 2014 SRT Viper TA is restricted to a very tight 33 examples.

Every country in this world wants to be recognized as a leader in at least one profession. In the automotive world, the high-end supercar genre serves as a competitive activity attracting the diversity of many nations. Cars leading the United States contingent involves Detroit three choices such as the SRT Viper. Naming a few other supercar makes around the world, Italy has Lamborghini as well as Ferrari, Germany has Porsche, Sweden has Koenigsegg and McLaren belongs to the United Kingdom. Even a start-up company in Canada created the HTT Phethore. Next to join the 2013 supercar marketplace will be Mexico under efforts of newly announced vehicle company VUHL.

Pronounced ‘vool’, the VUHL is an abbreviation created from the phrase, “Vehicle of Ultra-lightweight and High-performance”. If you haven’t heard of the Mexican auto company, you’re in a majority. Until now, the VUHL supercar project existed behind closed doors. Spawned from the imaginations of Mexican brothers Iker and Guillermo Echeverria, their crown jewel supercar will be the street-legal VUHL 05. A vehicle given form through the Echeverria brother’s Mexico City-based design agency Etxe, the VUHL 05 supercar is teased to us in the first official image depicting the front end. Further information should trickle out on the 05 supercar in coming months as they prepare for a premiere at the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed starting July 14th.

There have been a few details released on the VUHL 05 supercar ahead of the July unveiling. Said to be a precision-built, high-performance vehicle, Iker Echeverria defined the efforts for the start-up sports car make. “We intend VUHL products to be renowned for their effective simplicity and aesthetics guided by a purity of function. The 05 and its successors will also be notable for uncompromising build quality, rigorous attention to detail and a driving experience par excellence.” said Echeverria. Designed by Etxe in Mexico, the VUHL 05 supercar will be assembled through the cooperation of several regions. In bringing the VUHL 05 supercar to reality, partnerships with established automotive players Magna Steyr, Multimatic and Ford Motor Company will figure into the finished VUHL car. Production of the 05 supercar bodies will take place in Canada while handling is said to be tuned in the United Kingdom. Chassis construction and final vehicle assembly will be performed in Mexico City.

The father to the two brothers, Guillermo Echeverria Sr, competed in motorsport events for more than 30 years. Involved in the construction and campaigning of sports cars as well as formula racers, one of Echeverria Sr more publicized outings was in the 1974 Mexican 1000 kilometres. Part of the Camel GT Challenge co-driving a Lotus Europa, the effort resulted in a 30th overall position. Almost 40 years since their father’s effort, the VUHL 05 supercar will be paying tribute to the family tradition of going fast.

When the VUHL 05 supercar break lights, it will be very interesting to see if this vehicle will revise the way the world view Mexico’s auto industry.

Since the late 1980s, Ferrari has ventured up the highest plateaus of racing-inspired engineering and design with a selection of wildly powerful, limited edition production vehicles. First the Ferrari F40, than the F50 and most recently the Enzo supercar were solely purposed to elevate the Italian sport car maker’s already exemplary performance reputation. More than a decade after the Ferrari Enzo became the go-to poster child for near perfection in motoring, the successor debuts at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show. Ferrari’s new name in super high-performance is LaFerrari.

Reflecting immediately on the model name, LaFerrari comes off as a little unimaginative or confusing. Are we supposed to call it the Ferrari LaFerrari or just the LaFerrari? Combining the company name with “la” (recognized in the Italian as a feminine use for “the”), this latest supercar is described as essence of Ferrari’s present and future moving forward. “We chose to call this model LaFerrari because it is the maximum expression of what defines our company- excellence.” said Ferrari’s President Luca di Montezemolo. Ferrari’s new LaFerrari will attempt to stir debate along admirers inquiring does the brand makes the car or does the car make the brand.

In the same fashion that the Lamborghini Veneno (another 2013 Geneva Motor Show premiere) took lessons of their recent vehicles like the Aventador to another level, Ferrari has evolved their design and construction expertise in creating the LaFerrari. A shape tuned with computer fluid dynamic programs and a Formula 1 wind tunnel, the LaFerrari supercar has still evolved into a pure Ferrari within the confides. Created in-house by a team led by Flavio Manzoni, the newest Ferrari supercar accepts modern design practice and reconnects with the brand’s sport prototype cars of the 1960s. Cues from the 458 Italia and the F12berlinetta are apparent in the headlamps, front air intake and through the side glass detail. Outer mirror pods are pushed far from the beautifully contoured body to not significantly obstruct aerodynamics of the LaFerrari. Featuring active aerodynamics, the front and rear diffuser as well as a spoiler can be augmented in real time to proper match the LaFerrari’s dynamics. Classic styling attributes such as the greenhouse area and the hood outlet are reminiscent of the fantastic Ferrari 330 P4 that won the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona event.

Technologically, the LaFerrari becomes a monumental creation. The first Ferrari production vehicle to incorporate their HY-KERS hybrid technology, the combination of a gasoline engine and two electric motors delivers an efficiency boost over traditional supercar performance. Not only reduce tailpipe emissions, HY-KERS is configured to enhance all-around power from the LaFerrari’s V12 engine. Supplying bulk of the supercar’s performance is an 800 CV (789 horsepower) 6.3 liter V12 powerplant mounted behind the cockpit of the LaFerrari. Weighing an impressively light 60 kilograms (132 pounds) when accounting for all components including the battery pack, the electrical drive system co-developed with Magneti Marelli produces an additional 120 kilowatts through the HY-KERS powertrain. Collectively, an enormously large 952 horsepower propels the LaFerrari supercar. Introducing the HY-KERS technology on the LaFerrari, Ferrari defines the powertrain is something that will become a greater factor in the development of future Ferrari models.

Riding on a double wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension layout, the LaFerrari supercar delivers the perfected sport feel dedicated Ferrari owners have grown to expect. Magnetorheological damping incorporated on the LaFerrari adapts to changing road conditions quickly for a more agile ride. Pirelli P-Zero tires spin on 19-inch wheels at the front and 20-inch rear wheels delivers performance in style. A host of high-tech aids such as F1 traction control, electronic stability control and an electronic differential will guarantee the LaFerrari’s 952 horses are not running wild. Brembo carbon-ceramic braking system provides firm stopping power in addition to recovering energy for the hybrid powertrain.

Channelling power through a dual-clutch transmission, engine performance to the Pirelli tires is spectacular. Less than 3 seconds after applying the supercar’s accelerator, the LaFerrari launches from a standstill to 62 miles per hour. Following 15 seconds of constant straight-line power, a driver is taken to 186 miles per hour on route to top speed appraised at 350 kilometers per hour (roughly 217.5 miles per hour). Besides speed going straight, over sixty years of sports car and Formula 1 racing expertise has gone into making the LaFerrari a superior track performer. On Ferrari’s Fiorano circuit, Fernando Alonso rode the LaFerrari around the 1.862-mile course in 1 minute and 20 seconds for a new production car lap time record.

Upward-opening doors invite a driver and a passenger into the LaFerrari’s performance-optimized cabin consisting heavily of carbon fiber material. Considering primarily the vehicle‘s center of gravity as well as the driver, the interior is clearly an office space devoted to the pursuit of speed. Consulting with current Ferrari Formula 1 racing pilots Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa, the driver’s position inside the LaFerrari is fixed for prime efficiency. Near identical to Ferrari’s F138 Formula 1 car, many of the vehicle controls are located on the steering wheel. Paddle-style gear selectors are another ergonomic touch assuring the LaFerrari will be handled with both hands constantly on the steering wheel.

Like the ultra-high performance Ferrari supercars that came before, the LaFerrari will be a limited production product. With 499 examples of the LaFerrari planned, pricing details are being withheld for the meantime preserving the dream car as a dream for almost everyone.

Like marriages, milestone anniversaries for auto companies can be celebrated in one of two ways. Sometimes (sadly) it is disregarded. Such was the case with the North American arm of Toyota transfer through their 50th anniversary of sales in 2007. Ford Motor Company will likely engage in promoting the 50th year of the Ford Mustang in 2014 but the 25th year of the Taurus sedan barely received a mention in 2010 and 2011. Fortunately, it is a relief to automotive fans numerous automakers regard their anniversaries with deeper consideration than most married men bid to their own partnership. Celebrating its 50th year of building desirable high-performance sports cars, Lamborghini has figured no matter way to commemorate the occasion with a special supercar. Set for exhibition at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, the highly limited Veneno production supercar is something only an occasion such as fifty years in business could realize.

An Italian sports car company, Lamborghini has a history of showing plenty of friendship to Spain. Starting with the fighting bull badge adorning all of the Italian supercars since founder Ferruccio Lamborghini commissioned the 350 GTV, the latest Aventador name is borrowed from the Spanish language word for fan. The Lamborghini Veneno is yet another vehicle demonstrating the intertwined cultural between two countries. The translation of the word “venom” in the Spanish tongue, Veneno is an appropriate name for the aggressive motor vehicle. Comprised of carbon fiber-reinforced panels such as the automakers Forged Composite and CarbonSkin, the Lamborghini Veneno is one of the leanest yet meanest supercars ever to exist.

Utilizing some of the Aventador LP-700-4’s qualities including the 6.5 liter V12 powerplant and structural technology, the Lamborghini Veneno explores the next step of lightweight, high-horsepower supercar extravagance. Appearing just like a modern prototype sports car that successfully completed the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Lamborghini Veneno is an aerodynamically perfected shape for overall performance. Shaped entirely with carbon fiber to promote superior straight-line speed, the focus on maintaining maximum aerodynamic downforce means the airflow around the Lamborghini Veneno supercar is managed like a visual symphony. The Veneno is another extension on the engineering inspiration displayed years ago on the Lamborghini Sesto Elemento concept car.

All Lamborghini Veneno production models will feature a grey metallic exterior heightened in appearance by black carbon fiber. Designed to a Y theme, the attractive yet functional contouring has influenced the headlamps, taillights and engine cooling vent layout. The six engine cooling openings are configured to leave a central tail on the Lamborghini Veneno says improves stability and braking. An adjustable rear wing found on the back of the Lamborghini Veneno insures the rear end remains firmly planted so the tires on 20-inch front and 21-inch rear alloy wheels can take care of business.

Mounted on a monocoque constructed using carbon-fiber reinforced polymers and aluminum sub frames, the Lamborghini Veneno enjoys a strong but light structure similar to the method used for the Aventador. With the Veneno, Lamborghini engineers have found ways to shave more weight from the process of building a 200-plus mile per hour supercar. A vehicle reportedly weighing just 1,450 kilograms (3,190 pounds), the Lamborghini Veneno is lighter than several mid-sized passenger cars including the Kia Optima and Honda Accord.

With a minimized weight, the super rare supercar Lamborghini receives a 750-horsepower version of the 6.5 liter V12 engine to complete the performance equation. The Lamborghini Veneno boasts a pounds per horsepower ratio of 4.25 instantly promising the supercar has a ferocious bite. The 7-speed ISR manual transmission and a permanent all-wheel drivetrain courts engine power in pursuit of impressive speed potential. Accelerating from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 2.8 seconds, the 750-horsepower Lamborghini Veneno can streak to a top speed of 221 miles per hour.

Configured with a typical two-seat supercar interior layout, the race car-inspired engineering exercised on the Lamborghini Veneno stylishly sells the vehicle’s performance. Lamborghini’s Forged Composite material goes into the creation of lightweight seating while a woven carbon fiber material called CarbonSkin upholsters most of the interior surfaces. In the instrument panel, the driver of the Lamborghini Veneno will note a full information center including unique data from a G-meter.

Against the grain of modern automotive promotion of safety and overall reducing carbon footprints, performance still reigns supreme. Learning many lessons in recent years, auto companies have become educated to the fact that they must infuse excitement into every vehicle they build. From the most economy-oriented subcompact to their flagship car, the desire for quality performing automobiles drivers want to handle provokes greater influence from motorsports. Originally founded as a competition division of Nissan, NISMO will be launched into a more prominent role as a specialty sub brand from 2013 and beyond.

In a major announcement, Nissan has officially declared the NISMO name will step into the forefront of the auto company’s strategy. Opening NISMO’s new headquarters and development center in the Japanese city of Yokohama, Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn was on hand to reveal a new global focus for the auto company’s motorsport arm. Confirming that the NISMO name will be behind enhanced versions of a large line-up of Nissan automobiles, Ghosn said, “NISMO will democratize performance and bring new excitement to the Nissan portfolio with a broader range of affordable and innovative performance models for more markets and more people,”

Speaking of the “NISMO Spirit”, Nissan touts the focus for the expanded division is to sculpt racing-inspired production vehicles that combine fun performance and practically. NISMO vehicles will be developed to also draw attention to quality and innovation. This auto show season, we have receiving a taste of the NISMO spirit with two new vehicles. Launching the NISMO is an unforgettable version of the Nissan Juke. The 2013 Nissan Juke NISMO’s 197 horsepower and performance themed handling and styling has excelled in grabbing attention. Keeping in mind that the Nissan Juke already known to deviate from conventions, NISMO touches pushes a distinctive style for what we may expect from future products from Nissan‘s performance line. Returning as an elevated version of Nissan’s more accessible sports car magic, a refreshed 350-horsepower 2014 370Z NISMO goes on sale this summer in the United States. A new Nissan GT-R NISMO is one of many vehicles on the drawing board.

An abbreviation of Nissan Motorsports, the NISMO name first appeared in 1984 with the purpose of perpetuating the auto brand in auto racing. Creating vehicles mostly for sports car-type activities, NISMO has participated in Japanese and other global racing competitions. Relating to North American motorsports, NISMO was completely behind an overall victory at the 1992 Rolex 24 at Daytona. As Nissan was propelled to success on-track, NISMO was mentioned more frequently off-track.

Since the late 1980s, NISMO had been tempting Nissan owners with an array of tuner kits and components for bring more performance out of their vehicles. Recently, the NISMO badge has been used on several tricked-out models. Nissan’s Sentra, Z Series cars and the GT-R supercar have been recipients of NISMO performance enhancements. NISMO appearance attached to Nissan cars in several popular video games such as Gran Turismo 5 has filled the virtual world with Japanese brand racing packages. Despite the popularity of NISMO, Nissan had up until now fallen short of throwing a continuous global commitment to the performance brand in a similar way to how Mercedes-Benz backs AMG or the SRT division now operates within Chrysler.

The expansion of the NISMO brand will also include a more visible global motorsport presence. Auto racing programs will operate under NISMO in 2013 with continuous emphasis on the FIA GT Series and Japanese Super GT Series. The New Year adds the newly started Australian V8 Supercars Championship effort with the Altima sedan powered by a production-based engine.

As many remember from last year, the DeltaWing chassis was powered by a Nissan powerplant similar to that found in the Juke. Since the Nissan-DeltaWing has competed in a non-classified manner in 2012 sports car racing, the motorsport world had been introduced to a new school of thought for building the racing vehicles of the future. Two years after Nissan participated in the Project 56 experiment, their reinvigorated performance arm NISMO will be one car builder with plans of upping the game of the DeltaWing. Nissan promises the NISMO name will be behind an all-new prototype sports car effort involving a potentially groundbreaking vehicle occupying Garage 56 at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2014. A program just announced to the public, the NISMO racecar is pledged to integrate electric vehicle technology for the 2014 sports car effort. Nissan and NISMO will continue to support competitors in other sports car prototype classes at the 2013 24 Hours of Le Mans with engines. The DeltaWing’s first official season of competition in the American Le Mans Series is also likely to depend on Nissan-NISMO power.

Creating everything from potent everyday driving vehicles to extreme technology racecars, Nissan and NISMO is prepared to make noise ahead of the Japanese auto company’s 80th birthday in December.

The 2013 Super Bowl has wrapped in suspenseful style on Sunday night. As the Baltimore Ravens won the NFL’s greatest prize by fending off the San Francisco 49ers in the second half of the big game, the 34-31 victory was a battle worthy of its hype. On Monday, the winner of the Super Bowl’s most prestigious MVP Award was joined in the presence by another winning persona that was recently revealed at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

At the 2013 Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction, the rights to the first production example of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray was purchased by NASCAR superteam owner Rick Hendrick for $1,100,000. After a dramatic 47th Super Bowl in New Orleans, another high-profile future owner of North America’s most enduring sports car was part of the spoils awarded to one member of the winning Baltimore Ravens.

Honoured with Super Bowl XLVII’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award, Ravens’ quarterback Joe Flacco claimed a prestigious trophy named after the long-standing NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle. In addition to the Tiffany & Co silver Pete Rozelle Trophy, the 2013 Super Bowl MVP was granted with the future keys of a 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. Made possible by Chevrolet’s official sponsorship of the 2013 Super Bowl MVP Award, the presentation of a 450-horsepower 2014 Corvette Stingray will be the ultimate pleasure machine for a football player like Flacco to experience during the NFL off-season.

A more recent tradition has been Chevrolet‘s involvement in the MVP Award after the big game. Super Bowl XLV MVP Aaron Rodgers received a Chevrolet Camaro Convertible while Eli Manning was granted a 2012 Corvette GS last year based on his award winning performance on the gridiron. This year’s awarding of the 2014 Corvette Stingray also served as a way to document a story of a Chevrolet dealership’s recovery. In 2005, Banner Chevrolet was one of many businesses devastated by the effects of Hurricane Katrina. After suffering heavy damage and the loss of their 770-vehicle inventory over 7 years ago, Banner Chevrolet has since rebuilt and the auto group’s chairman Rick Flick awarded the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray to 2013 Super Bowl champ Joe Flacco.

Joe Flacco should expect to receive his own personal 2014 Corvette Stingray sometime this summer. Therefore, it is very possible that the new sports car will be found around Baltimore Ravens training camp for the next NFL season.

When the Viper was reborn as a halo product for Chrysler Group’s newly formed SRT brand, the motorsport ambitions for the new vehicle was made apparent right from the start. Unlike the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray that will leave fans in the larch for the C7R version race car, the SRT Viper GTS-R was on prominent display alongside the 640-horsepower, V-10 powered street vehicle. Debuting in four races last season in the American Le Mans Series, SRT Motorsports’ appearance was in preparations for a full-fledged 2013 assault on the likes of teams campaigning the BMW M3, Ferrari 458, Porsche 911 and Chevrolet Corvette. In addition to the full calendar for what will be the final American Le Mans Series ahead of a the 2014 merger with the Grand-Am sports car series, the SRT Viper GTS-R will be making a return to the French 24-hour endurance classic.

Announced on Friday, SRT Motorsports confirmed they have accepted an invitation from the 24 Hours of Le Mans race sanctioning body for the 2013 event. With the race set for June 22nd and 23rd, two SRT Viper GTS-R race vehicles will participate in the special endurance challenge. Unlike many racing events that accept almost any team that wishes to place a car at the track for time trials, making the field for the Le Mans 24-hour race is a more exclusive honour. The ACO (Automobile Club de l’Ouest) invite teams they feel most confident will be best prepared for competition at the Circuit de la Sarthe.

The news is actually a return for the Mopar backed supercar. When the closed cockpit Viper GTS was introduced in 1996, French operation Oreca quickly found success campaigning a race version of the supercar in Europe. Recognized as the Chrysler Viper GTS-R (the Dodge brand did not possess an official presence in the European market as the time), Viper Team Ocera was dominant in the FIA GT Championship from 1997 to 1999. Viper Team Ocera captured their GT class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans for three consecutive years from 1998 to 2000. The Viper GTS-R was also fielded by the Larbre Competition team for the 2001 to 2003 editions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In the wake of the success of Oreca, ambitious efforts from the Chevrolet Corvette, Ferrari 550 and Saleen S7R would lessen the Viper’s bite on the GT class competition in the vehicle’s later years.

Returning from a 10-year absence, the latest Viper GTS-R will once again enjoy a full commitment from the Chrysler factory. SRT Motorsports and their technical partner Riley Technologies are certainly readying a winning team for June’s showing in France. Despite the race’s outcome, hearing the American-made, V-10 powered Viper GTS-R back competing on the Circuit de la Sarthe will definitely bring an exotic flavour to the 2013 race.

In the fashion world, the runway is a focal point where style and vision is showcased. Debuting looks projecting power, poise and elegance, there is a burning desire to win over an audience (particularly social elite figures). Similar to the driving ambition of fashion designers, exotic car manufacturers also crave the peak of motoring perfection in their creations. In order to show off the beauty of high performance, Lamborghini has taken five examples of their latest Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster down its own runway trip (a Miami International Airport runway). In the case of supercar style, the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster’s appearance on the runway would convey some timeless style.

Inaugurating a 10-day publication blitz directed towards media and dealerships, the 700-horsepower open-air Lamborghini supercar set out to match or beat the speed of a commercial jet airliner. The amusing time trial session of car versus airliner was a carefully orchestrated move between Lamborghini, Miami-Dade County Officials as well as the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration). Allowed to proceed when arriving and departing flights were not disturbed, five Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Roadsters performance potential was demonstrated in a unique way.

Keeping in mind their wasn’t an all-out drag race between the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 and the American Airlines Boeing 777 jet airliner shown in the pictures, the speed runs on a closed-course were conducted against an established measure of passenger plane takeoff velocity. Accelerating from 0 to 60 miles per hour in under three seconds, the Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster outpaced a passenger airliner between 150 and 180 miles per hour. The Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster also claimed an advantage when it comes to all-out speed. Since airliners takeoff would rarely exceed 200 miles per hour on a runway before lift-off, the Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster also claimed victory as it rocketed to 210 miles per hour on the Miami International Airport runway. The vehicle’s posted top speed is listed at 217 miles per hour but perhaps the Aventador Roadster and its 6.5 liter V-12 engine decided not to show off its true potential.

Celebrating 50 years, Lamborghini supercars is a certified Italian fashion house making excess speed in vogue. On the same day as the Miami International Airport runway exhibition, a parade of 50 cars rolled down Collins Avenue in Florida’s South Beach. Even traveling the speed limit, Lamborghini vehicles gather an admiring crowd. However, when a vehicle like the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster is pressed to its limits, it obviously enters a secluded zone.

For too many of us, the prospect of buying a Chevrolet Corvette is the figment of dreams. When the 2014 Corvette Stingray premiered a week ago at the 2013 North American International Auto Show, the sense of wonder flowing from the 2014 model year sport car’s design and performance promise was no doubt accompanied with some dejected feelings for a vehicle we‘ll never own. While many will find a more financially accessible vehicle to partake in motoring moments, Chevrolet clearly feels confident enough drivers will choose the sport-oriented Corvette Stingray to indulge their road-going desires.

Within the group who possess the resources to own a new Chevrolet Corvette, the enviable position is to purchase the first vehicle of the seventh generation. Saturday night of the 2013 Barrett-Jackson classic car auction in Scottsdale, Arizona presented a guarantee for one person to obtain car number one for the next chapter of Chevrolet’s iconic sports car.

In what is becoming a new tradition when Chevrolet begins production of a significant vehicle, the future ownership of the first customer version is auctioned off for charity. For this year’s edition of the popular Arizona auction, honours of owning the first publicly sold version of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray was a hot edition to the 2013 Barrett-Jackson catalogue. The Corvette Stingray sale is especially hot since the first ever public eyes had only begun to fascinate on the 2014 model year sports car at the Detroit auto show. An auction for a yet-to-be built coupe variant of the new Corvette Stingray, the special vehicle will be branded with a Vehicle Identification Number immortalizing the car’s production with a code ending in 0001.

Recognized as lot number 3,016 at the 2013 Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction, the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray was presided by a 1968 Corvette L-88 racecar that garnered a one million-dollar bid. Shortly after a prototype version of the 2014 Corvette Stingray was parked on the auction’s stage the price quickly shot up in hundred thousand dollar increments. Each dollar that the no reserve auction lot earned meant a higher donation to the Detroit-located College for Creative Studies. Reaching the $1,000,000 mark, it took only a $50,000 bid for the victorious buyer to win the 450-horsepower Corvette Stingray. Successful in obtaining the car was Rick Hendrick with a $1,050,000 (however, the Barrett-Jackson listing declares the bid as $1,100,000 taking into account the buyer‘s commission paid to the auction company).

A car dealer turned Chevrolet motorsport’s top supporter since the 1980s, Rick Hendrick is best known as the team owner behind over 200 race victories and 10 driver championships in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. For the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup season, Hendrick Motorsports will campaign the 2014 Chevrolet SS with drivers Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr and Kasey Kahne. From 1985 to 1988, Hendrick’s race organization became part of Corvette history at the professional sports car racing level. The Chevrolet Corvette GTP, in Hendrick Motorsports hands, would collect two victories in the IMSA GT Championship for what was otherwise a lackluster effort hurt largely by technical problems.

Rick Hendrick’s recent winning history has also consisted of achieving highest bid in most, if not all, auction for the earliest produced Chevrolet vehicles. Hendrick already has the first Chevrolet Camaro, the first Volt plug-in hybrid and the first Corvette ZR1. Purchasing the first customer available 2014 Corvette Stingray, Rick is able to specify the colour and equipment of the vehicle wearing the VIN ending in 0001 ahead of picking it up in a special ceremony. After all, spending $1,100,000 for a vehicle that will certainly retail for a fraction of that cost should entitle him to some special benefit (aside from first seventh-generation Corvette Stingray isn‘t enough).

With the 2014 C7 Corvette having just been released, there is a showdown on the horizon. One legend is returning, the other has been bulking up and is coming back with a new look for the next generation. I’m sure by now most of you have seen the 2013 SRT Viper, and it looks fantastic! In the other corner sits the Corvette, which I will be honest, I have never been a huge fan of. In my opinion, if you could only call one a super car, it would be the Viper, and always has been. There is a certain pantomime a car needs surrounding it to be a super car, a sense that you are by something great and unusual when standing next to it. Now before you guys form an angry mob and ambush my house, let’s take a look at the history of the two, and also the next generation of both and I’ll explain why.

History

Not to bore you with facts, but here are some anyway. The Corvette has been around since 1953, was named after quick American naval ships, and is built in Kentucky. That is as American as Dirty Harry and apple pie. However, sacrilegious as this may be, I think the last good looking Corvette was made in 1982. It was downhill after that, as it began to look more like Star Wars space junk than a sports car. The body looked plastic, the interior followed suit, and it took on a dated, digital, square look. It looked closer to a stretched Fiero than anything else.

You can’t blame Chevy, after all, it was the 80’s and every car got cheap looking and was styled with the lines of a walkman. Not true, as you can look back on Ferraris and Porsche 911s of the 80’s. Then when the C5 came out in 1997 someone forgot to tell them that pop-up headlights had not been cool for a long while, and while it was more curvaceous, it got a fat rear end. The looks got a little better with the C6 in 2005 becoming the basic design we all know today. They finally got rid of the pop up headlamps, but it still has a gigantic ugly rear.

While the Vette was busy being cheap and ugly in 1992, the Dodge Viper burst onto the scene in a flurry of tire smoke and the thunder of a V10 engine. If you look at the 92’ corvette you would think they were from different decades, or maybe the Viper was straight from the future! This was something special, not brand marketing, this was a poster car. Growing up in the 90’s, the Viper was all that, and that is what being a super car is all about! This car was plastered on my friends’ walls, we all had Viper Hot Wheels, and magazine cut outs of the car. Just look at it, the sleek back, the long hood, and those side exhausts!

It’s a whole bunch of showing off, but it looks sexy and fun. In 1996 they released the coupe version, which was a bit more serious, but just as good looking, probably one of the best looking cars ever. In 2003 they released a new version which got a bigger 8.3L V10 engine and 500hp. 2006 saw the hard top coupe version with 510hp, and that really completed the looks for the 2nd generation body style, it looked so original, American, and mean while still having some fun. How could you not with the extra 10hp under the hood? By the end of the 2nd generation, the SRT-10 ACR edition had broken the production car lap record at the Nurburgring. After 2010 the Viper went out of production…until now!

The Corvette needed to get out of the Viper’s shadow with the performance crowd after it had put on such a show for the previous 18 years. While the Viper was on its way out in 2008, Chevrolet let their ZR1 Vette out of the cage, all pent up with rage. To date this is the fastest Corvette around the Nurburgring after its run in 2012, however it is several seconds off of the Viper. But that isn’t the end all on deciding a car, I just bring that up because of how big of a deal Chevy made of the ZR1’s time. The 2013 base Corvette starts pricing at under $50k, not bad considering you get 430hp and 0-60 in 4.2 seconds. The Z06 has 505hp, can do 0-60 in less than 4 seconds, and is a light weight respectable sports car, but is $77k. Then we come to the ZR1.

It has a 638hp supercharged V8 engine, which instead of producing exhaust gases, sends howling demon monkeys screaming out of the back. Honestly, it emits a stupendous sound while pushing the limits. Unfortunately it’s gaudy. So much in fact they decided to put a clear plastic cover on the hood, under which the fake plastic engine cover can be seen. This is not going to impress anyone that is worth talking to. Also it’s $115k…so if you are really in the market, and performance is what you care about, save yourself some green and go out and buy a lightly used SRT-10 ACR, there are many on the market right now in the $80-90k range.

But, oh look! After tackling the Nurburgring and embarrassing the Germans and Italians, the Corvette is back to fight for its home turf summoning its Stingray super powers, and boy does it look good. Send the children to bed before going through the pictures, because this car is pure sex. If you have not read up on the car yet, check out Chris Nagy’s First Impressions for some more in depth detail. I’ll touch on some points that stood out here. It has been lightened with carbon fiber panels as standard for a lower center of gravity. The small block 6.2 liter V8 allows the block to be placed further back to help give the car almost 50/50 weight distribution, a down side of that is the car could be unstable under braking. The car also has a wider stance to improve grip, which Chevrolet claims can reach a whole G in cornering. In addition the C7 has a diffuser like a Formula 1 car, only in this case it is in the front of the car. In the case of the F1 car hot exhaust gasses are released onto the rear wing to improve down force, while in the Corvette the hot air that has passed through the front grill is released through the vents on the hood, which then flows over the car improving down force, also reducing drag by venting the air. The update that stood out the most was a 7 speed manual gearbox!

Don’t get all excited yet though, there are some issues to address here. The styling seems blatantly copied off of a Ferrari, a 599 is just one that comes to mind. As I said it does look fantastic…until you get around to the back. The ass end of the car is hideous! It looks like the old C6 has just clinched up, or perhaps been crashed into, and does not follow the contour of the car whatsoever. Also it now as something called “Active Rev Match”, and this simulates heel-toe braking by “blipping” the throttle automatically on downshifts and also revs up automatically while up shifting. There isn’t left much to skill after that, in addition to all of the torque reduction and traction management settings. After taking it all in, it seems like a desperate attempt to keep stride with the new Viper.

We already know the Viper specs however. It has the infamous V10 engine has 640hp roaring away at the front, and 600 lb-ft of torque propelling you from the back, and SRT so proudly points out, “…the most of any naturally aspirated sports car in the world.” Just like the new Stingray it has a lighter frame, and near 50/50 weight distribution. However when you get down to the business of driving, you get the sense that they only put traction control in because it is required by U.S. law. Both the stability and traction control have 2 settings, “on” or “off”…unlike the Corvette that advertises 12 variables that can be tinkered with and 5 torque and brake settings. Are you serious Chevrolet? It’s a super muscle car, it is supposed to scare the pants off of you when driven improperly. You can change the color of the seats and stitching to your liking, so you can escape from a dull interior as well. Prices start at about $97k, and end just over $120k for the GTS model.

Verdict

This is it, which one is the American super car? I’ve been asking the readers this for about a week now, and so far it has been unanimous. Most have pointed out that, sure, the Corvette has more history, and they have produced and sold more, but that just doesn’t do it. When you drive down U.S. 31 you see as many Corvettes as you do Nissan Zs. Thus, you don’t see anyone rolling their windows down to take a picture of one, because they are too ordinary! A super car needs to have an epic presence, like Shaq or a Mission Impossible trailer; it needs to be outlandish, ridiculous, fun and unnecessary!

The Corvette is a place you go when you start using Cialis, and overcompensate for it. However the Viper is a place you go when you start using Cialis, and can have a laugh about it! Most of the people I asked didn’t even talk about the Corvette. They just went on about how the Viper is “ridiculous” and talked about the Viper following, or called it a “monster” and a “kissing death kind of car”.

You can talk about stats, cornering g’s, and other performance figures until you have bored everyone in the room, the fact is a super car is really about the pantomime and “shock & awe” factors. That is what the Corvette is missing, and I doubt it will ever attain it. Not to mention the looks are so much better on the new SRT, the curves are fierce, the V10 idle sound is that of a lion before it takes its prey, and the sleek tail lights remind me of an Aston Martin. The Viper is America’s super car, simply because you need to either go big, or go home.
