Hennessey, the Texas-based tuning company known for churning out such monsters as the 1000 hp Cadillac CTS-V, the Cadillac Escalade that beats up on a Nissan GT-R, and of course their own creation, the Venom GT which impressively took the top speed record from the Bugatti Veyron (controversial,) just whipped up what they call the Hennessey VelociRaptor SUV.

Based on Ford’s F-150 SVT Raptor – the truck of all trucks in my mind – at 411 hp and 434 lb-ft of torque, the team at Hennessey have made quite a few changes to the truck.

The most obvious of which is the SUV-ness of the whole thing:

Turning a Truck into an SUV

The Hennessey team took the $44,000+ truck and converted it into an SUV. And I mean a full-on conversion, as you can see from the pics.

The VelociRaptor SUV seats up to eight people:

And although obviously based on the F-150, ends up looking like a more aggressive Ford Expedition from any angle other than the front:

And it specs up to the Expedition quite well too, as far as seating and cargo are concerned.

So basically what you’re buying here is…

As far as utility goes, an aggressive-looking Ford Expedition with a monstrous engine.

So what about the power?

Hennessey’s VelociRaptor SUV keeps the same 411 hp, 6.2-liter V8 powerplant that’s in the F-150 SVT Raptor, despite the vehicle’s additional 600 lb weight.

The result: 0-60 mph in 7.5 seconds. Doesn’t sound awful for a vehicle of its size, sure.

Plus, you can upgrade it – Hennessey offers an upgrade to the F-150 Raptor truck, giving it a supercharged 600 hp, and offer the same upgrade on the SUV, which would let it hit 0-60 in 5.9 seconds – 0.7 seconds slower than the truck.

But here’s the thing…

The cost: $149,500

Given, they’re only making up to 30 of these per year, if there’s demand for them, but I still don’t get it.

I love the SVT Raptor – I think it’s the coolest truck on the road (next to the Lambo-smoking GMC Syclone,) and usually I’m a huge fan of Hennessey’s models, but I’m having trouble understanding this SUV.

People buy SUVs for utility – it’s in the name (Sport Utility Vehicle.) They buy it so they have a ton of space in the back to carry people and guns and deer and, I don’t know, boats and whatnot. That I get.

The Raptor was made to be a badass on-road and off, and look good doing it.

The SUV doesn’t accomplish that. Yup, it carries a lot of shit. Check. Off-roading? From the company’s press release: “the company suggests that buyers should intend using this vehicle for on-road as well as light to moderate off-road duties.”

So what are you suggesting?

The VelociRaptor SUV is a cool project that some people will get. They want a giant SUV that gets negative fuel economy and has space to carry a small house if need be. It’s special, there aren’t very many made, and that’s who it’s for.

But looking at the cost, it’s slow and impractical in every way compared to its competition:

Range Rover

The Range Rover Sport HSE we drove last month cost about $70,000 (they start around $60,000) and could get from 0-60 in 7.2 seconds thanks to its 375 hp 5.0-liter V8. It was also comfortable, refined, and can go off-road.

The new Range Rovers offer even more – the base starts at $83,545 with a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 producing 340 hp propelling you to 60 mph from a stop in 7.1 seconds, or you can go for the top-spec version (for an even $100k) whose 510 hp supercharged 5.0-liter V8 can get you there in only 5.1 seconds. And go off-road and all that.

Mercedes-Benz GL63 AMG

Sure, it may look like you everyday suburb-cruising grocery-getter, but the Mercedes GL63 AMG isn’t your normal Soccer Mom ride.

With a massive 550 hp and 560 lb-ft of torque coming from its 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, the GL63 is able to knock off that 0-60 mph time in only 4.8 seconds.

That’s faster than a Porsche Cayman.

The current GL63 starts at $117,000.

So what’s your point?

All I’m saying is that for a starting price of $149,500, you have some more practical choices than the VelociRaptor SUV. I get it – a ton of work went into each one of these, you want unique, you want individual, you want American. That’s fine.

But for me, I’d always have that nagging feeling that I could be driving around a refined Mercedes or rugged Range Rover with more power, could be going off-road, faster, and have an extra $30-80,000 burning a hole in my pocket.

But then again, it wouldn’t say “SVT VelociRaptor” on the side, and I might just pull up to another one at the stoplight.

Which one would you choose?

Over the course of the past several months, automakers have supplied us with some marvellous new high-performance machines. Presented with the sight of such beauty on four wheels, the floor space of Detroit and Geneva offers a static display rather becoming to vehicles crafted to explore motion. Building a special sports car in honour of 100 years in the automotive business, Aston Martin has decided to host their latest concept car debut in a dynamic fashion.

At Germany’s Nürburgring, the Aston Martin CC100 Speedster Concept car made its fast premiere to the public. Designed and constructed in a time-span under six months, the CC100 Speedster Concept blended Aston Martin’s history as well as perceived future in the two-seat sports car. The Aston Martin CC100 Speedster Concept car is a modernized tribute to their DBR1 prototype sports car racing car that raced in the mid-to-late 1950s. “The need to create a truly fitting tribute to 100 years of the Aston Martin brand has brought out the creativity and talent that makes Aston Martin such an exceptional luxury sports car maker.” said Design Director Marek Reichman. Replicating the classic competition roadster’s bodylines and character, much of the Aston Martin CC100 Speedster Concept’s styling appears rather distinct from the vintage race machine. Notable on the CC100 Speedster Concept is the current-era Aston Martin front end and cabin access gained through opening half-doors. Multimatic Incorporated is brought Aston Martin’s design creation to life using carbon fiber construction. Think of the Aston Martin CC100 Speedster Concept as the DBR1 if it was designed and built using 2013 technology.

An operational concept car, the Aston Martin CC100 Speedster’s heart beats with a production-based AM11 V-12 engine. The CC100 Speedster Concept’s 6-liter engine is the same powerplant used to propel Aston Martin’s modern street models such as the DB9 and Vanquish. Paired with a six-speed automated sequential manual transmission similar to the one found on V-8 powered examples of the Vantage, the Aston Martin CC100 Speedster Concept needs just a little more than four seconds to accelerate from 0 to 62 miles per hour. Top speed for the racing-inspired concept vehicle is electronically limited to 180 miles per hour.

The Aston Martin CC100 Speedster Concept’s Nürburgring introduction consisted of a lap around the classic German race circuit alongside a 1959 DBR1. Respected to steer the historic Aston Martin DBR1 car around the Nürburgring race track was British motorsport legend Sir Sterling Moss. Moss won the 1000-kilometer Nürburgring race four times over the course of his career including twice with the Aston Martin DBR1. For the Aston Martin DBR1, success of the race car was not limited to the Nürburgring event. In 1959, Carroll Shelby and Roy Salvadori won the 24 Hours of Le Mans with the DBR1 sports car.

Part of an Aston Martin presence that later included the 24-hour endurance race at the Nürburgring. A #005 and #007 Aston Martin Vantage GT3 is vying for overall victory in the ADAC 24 Hours of Nürburgring. While the CC100 Speedster Concept may influence the design future, this weekend’s race at the Nürburgring is also exhibiting advanced propulsion for Aston Martin. A Hybrid Hydrogen Rapide S has been recording its first racing laps on the 15.5-mile course.

Unlike the anniversary-motivated Veneno released from Lamborghini, Aston Martin is intent to keep the CC100 Speedster Concept as a one-off. However, the centennial-marking concept car built by Aston Martin could guide the look of future vehicles from the British premium car company.

By now I’m sure you know we’re not particularly crazy about NASCAR over here at Automoblog. When there are so many motorsports that are far more complex and technical than driving a stripped-out muscle car in a circle, NASCAR seems to be a bit…let’s just say, simple. Don’t get me wrong, I think the cars they drive are incredible machines and on a track with some turns, It’d make for a very interesting sport.

But my feelings on the sport itself are irrelevant right now, and there’s no denying its popularity and community surrounding it.

Dick Trickle, the much-loved retired NASCAR driver, reportedly committed suicide yesterday at the tender age of 71.

Dick was well-known in the racing community as a fun-loving, whimsical character, and his apparent suicide came as a shock to everyone who knew him.

Lincoln County, NC police received a call believed to be from Trickle saying “there would be a dead body and it would be his.” When they tried phoning back, they got no answer. His body was found next to his pickup truck in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Boger City shortly after.

Racing in one form or another in the ’70s and ’80s, Trickle finally moved to North Carolina in ’89 and quickly became a well-known NASCAR driver and personality.

In his 31 years of racing, Trickle won somewhere around an impressive 1,200 races before retiring in 2002 (although he continued to race short tracks years after that.) He was so successful that they literally lost count of how many races he won.

Have you seen Days of Thunder? You know, that late-’90s flick about Daytona 500 with Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman? The main character’s name was Cole Trickle. Guess who that was based on.

The dude made an impact on the sport.

Dick Trickle, you will be missed.

The luxury car segment is a field where many vehicles play. Commonly recognized luxury features are not hard to find in the current auto climate. These days, you can get leather seating in a Ford Fiesta. For this reason, a premium carmaker must define their cars with innovation in making the luxury riding experience unique and fulfilling. When it comes to a flagship vehicle, luxury brands can be forgiven for pulling out the stops. Creating the updated version to their S-Class large sedan, Mercedes-Benz has readied a comprehensive level of high-end luxury.

Described by Mercedes-Benz as “The Essence of Luxury”, the German automaker has set lofty ambitions for what is the newly revealed S-Class. Radiating with a meaningful styling and new technology, the refreshed styling of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class makes the car a bolder executive ride. “Stylish sportiness and sensual forms in synthesis with timeless clarity and effortless superiority make the S-Class a true design icon”, says design chief Gorden Wagener. The new S-Class’ exterior sports a more characterized physique. Front bodywork wraps around the car’s headlamps and larger chrome grille. A pair of side contours etches out a “convex-concave effect” creating a three-dimensional appearance along the door panels. From front to rear, the S-Class luxury sedan structure projects maturity with a playful sense of performance. It will be available in a short and long wheelbase variant.

One of Mercedes-Benz’s first begging points about the new S-Class is their use of LED technology throughout the sedan. Headlamps, taillights and interior illumination are made solely possible with around 500 LEDs in place. The S-Class is billed as the first ever car without a single light bulb. Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus and Night View Assist Plus have been enhanced.

High performance lighting is only one of the active driving features found on the new S-Class. Deeply entering the technological realm of untouched luxury territory, electronic aids create a driving sensation unlike anything else in the automotive marketplace. Adaptive Damping System ADS PLUS as well as the AIRMATIC air suspension system is in place to keep the wheels steady on the road and the ride is solid. An optional system said to offer “the world’s first suspension with eyes”, ROAD SURFACE SCAN uses a stereo camera to regulate the S-Class’ ride. Under an extended PRE-SAFE protection array, the S-Class will electronically assist in collision avoidance. Autonomous emergency braking at speeds up to 50 kilometers per hour, rear collision warning and protection as well as smart seatbelt control are components to the PRE-SAFE technology.

Driving the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan, more headroom and additional shoulder space will provide front section riders with roomier accommodations over the previous model. Dashboard information is provided through two high-resolution TFT displays. One screen serves as the instrument cluster for the S-Class while the display on the right-hand side relays infotainment and other comfort control information. A telephone keypad found on the center console and LINGUATRONIC powered Speech Dialog System allows the driver to exact easeful control of the infotainment features. A ten-speaker stereo system is standard with two options for upgrading the audio system. Both available audio setups are surround sound speaker systems provided by Burmester. A Frontbass system added to the S-Class involves mounting the woofers in the car’s firewall for better sound performance.

An ENERGIZING massage function for the seating uses 14 actuated air cushions in the seat back to supply the occupant with one of six message programs. One of the available cabin technologies on the new S-Class is the AIR-BALANCE package incorporating an “active perfuming system”. Fragrance choices with the AIR-BALANCE package include Freeside Mood, Nightlife Mood, Downtown Mood and Sports Mood is provided to the occupants.

Unlike the case with most automobiles, the riding experience for passengers receives almost more focus on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class than the driver. Borrowing some of the luxury engineering that resided in the now-defunct Maybach brand, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class offers super premium backseat comfort. An Executive seat option on the S-Class permits the rear rider to recline at a 43.5-degree angle. A “First Class Rear” option can also be ordered on the S-Class fitting a rear center console between two backseat occupants. Fold-out tables are available with the First Class Rear seating package suited for riders partaking in business transactions or a power lunch.

For a vehicle presenting so much luxury innovation, the new S-Class delivers a powertrain choice showcasing some of the vehicle’s more impressive technology. A 455-horsepower V8 biturbo engine on the S 500 model is 20 horsepower more potent its predecessor. The S 500 model is the powerhouse version of the new sedan with acceleration from 0 to 60 mph capable in 4.8 seconds. Continuing to tout a 3-liter diesel V6 engine, the S 350 BlueTEC version delivers exceptionally low fuel consumption. Two hybrid versions of the S-Class will also be made available. A gasoline-powered S 400 Hybrid will combine a 20-kilowatt electric motor with a 306-horsepower V6 engine. Integrating hybrid and diesel engine technology together, the S 300 BlueTec Hybrid is propelled by a diesel-powered 2.2 liter four-cylinder engine married to an electric motor. According to Mercedes’s data, the S 300 BlueTec Hybrid can potential go nearly twice the distance of an S 500 model on the same volume of fuel. An S 500 plug-in hybrid model is also expected in the near future. A responsive 7G-Tronic PLUS automatic transmission with a DIRECT SELECT lever is included on all S-Class vehicles.

Preparing to challenge the Audi A8 and BMW 7 Series, the release of the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan should arrive in North America by the end of this year. At a later date, customers in the United States will gain knowledge for what models and powertrains will be available.

We have familiarized ourselves with the tune “It’s a Small World” thanks to the folks at Disney. While the automotive sector is still dominated by hulking pickup trucks in North America, the philosophy of a smaller life for drivers has resulted with a slew of new compact vehicles. A small car market once dealt with as a novelty by American automakers is now a serious battleground. As important as the passenger car has become, the commercial vehicle market has also growing fond of a smaller set of wheels.

Responding with excellent fuel mileage and all the utility needed for business, the Ford Transit Connect has led a boom in the small commercial vehicle market in North America. Competitors are beginning to take note presenting their own smaller scale work solutions. Following the debut of a Fiat-based Ram ProMaster van, Chrysler Group is expected to announce a compact companion vehicle imminently. For the meantime, Ram is offering a Dodge Grand Caravan-based commercial minivan. Unwilling to be left behind, General Motors has brokered an agreement to insure their participation in the small van market by late 2014.

Available for fleet vehicle use in the United States and Canada, 2015 Chevrolet City Express cargo van is commissioned to serve the need of urban small businesses. Entering a deal with Nissan, the NV200 van will be the basis for the City Express. Powered by Nissan’s 2-liter double overhead cam engine connected to a continuously variable transmission, the 2015 Chevrolet City Express will be a front-wheel drive cargo hauler. Chevrolet’s identity with the City Express is established with its own front end styling featuring unique headlamps and grille. While the idea of Chevrolet depending on other automakers may seem disheartening to those patriotic to the Bowtie badge, sourcing commercial vans from other car companies is a common practice. In Europe, General Motors produces a majority of their Vauxhall and Opel commercial vans in cooperation with Renault. Chevrolet used to sell the Renault Trafic van in Brazil under their brand briefly in the late 1990s.

Being marketed as a smaller commercial van, the Chevrolet City Express is not that small compared to what the automaker had sold in the past. Measuring 186.3 inches in overall length, the City Express is actually longer than short wheelbase versions of the full-sized Chevrolet van constructed until the mid-1990s. Compared to the current full-sized Chevrolet Express van stretching 224 inches, the City Express continues to boast 122.7 cubic feet of cargo space. Rear cargo doors open in a 40/60 fashion on a hinge allowing up to 180 degrees of swing. Dual side sliding doors also guarantee cargo can be promptly loaded into the City Express. A protective floor cover, six cargo hooks and 20 integrated cargo area mounting points providing maximum convenience to van operators.

At front cabin area of the 2015 Chevrolet City Express, the small van is designed to serve the enterprising individual. Cargo storage areas in the dashboard and center console are large enough for all of the tools needed to logistical work. The 2015 City Express’s center console bin is gigantic enough to hold file folders or a portable computer. The passenger side can fold flat offering a table surface for a laptop or for writing out an invoice. An available technology package on the Chevrolet City Express will provide operators with navigation radio, Bluetooth connectivity, USB input, rear view camera as well as XM satellite radio.

Customizable to a far-reaching variety of businesses, the 2015 Chevrolet City Express van provides more than a surface to place company’s vinyl graphics and signage. Six roof rack mounting points allows fixtures for holding ladders to be easily installed. For business customers desiring windows instead of the traditional panel-covered cargo area, the 2015 City Express can be ordered from the factory to feature a multitude of window layouts.

To be available in two trim levels, the base LS model of the 2015 Chevrolet City Express will include standard four-wheel anti-lock brakes, six air bags, a full-sized spare tire and electronic stability control. The Chevrolet City Express LT variant adds cruise control, remote keyless entry as well as power heated mirrors and door locks.

Tailor-built for the fleet customer, the 2015 Chevrolet City Express will exist in a similar capacity as the Captiva Sport. Availability of the Nissan-derived Chevrolet City Express van is scheduled for the fall of 2014. The cost of doing business with the Chevrolet City Express van will be announced at a future date.

A blessing and a curse of this connected world is there are fewer secrets remaining in the world. Decades ago, following motorsports relied on finding a source or publication highlighting a specific form of racing. In the United States, NASCAR Sprint Cup blossomed from a regional level into a national force with media sources deciding to profile the stock car series. Through the 1990s with expanded television sport coverage and later through the Internet other forms of regional motorsport around the world can be fully appreciated. The German DTM Series has been a recent organization observed to be booming worldwide with growing race coverage. The impact of DTM has led to the commitment for a similar series in the United States by as early as 2015. While there is a two-year wait for the DTM Series, Another international import is preparing for a maiden stop at the new Circuit of the Americas track in Texas this upcoming weekend.

From May 17th to the 19th, the American race fans will be offered the first chance to witness the Australian V8 Supercars Series in person. The 3.427-mile (5.515 kilometer) Circuit of the Americas hosting of the V8 Supercars comes a six months after a Formula 1 race christened the track.

For the inaugural Austin 400 event, spectators can expect a race weekend differing from what we would see in NASCAR or the IZOD INDYCAR Series. Four practice sessions will be held on the Friday for the V8 Supercars ahead of a series of qualifying races. Saturday and Sunday will each consist of two qualifying races followed by a pair of 27-lap feature events. Each sprint race is expected to take approximately 40 minutes to complete.

A derivative of the Australian Touring Car Championship that ran from 1960 to 1998, passion for racing high-performance V8 engines are richly observed Down Under. Australian classic cars competing in the touring car includes the Holden Monaro GTS350 and the Ford Falcon XB. Action movie fans would recall a black “Pursuit Special” Ford Falcon XB in the Mad Max movies. Since 1998, the Australian Touring Car Championship has operated as the V8 Supercars organization. For a long time limited to the Oceania region of the world, the Australian V8 Supercars Series has actively branching out to other world audiences. The Australian V8 Supercars Series first venture to other markets consisted of a stop at the Shanghai International Circuit in 2005. Trips to the Bahrain International Circuit and the Yas Marina Circuit in the United Arab Emirates have also sit on the V8 Supercars calendar in recent years. Operating under the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the track that proved more than capable of hosting the 2012 United States Grand Prix should serve ideally for the first North American race for the V-8 powered machines.

The first year for a new set of rules designed to foster greater on-track competition, improved driver safety and lower costs for teams, the V8 Supercars grid has doubled from two to four car makes in 2013. Returning to the series is the Ford FG Falcon and the Holden VF Commodore. For motorsport audiences in the United States, the Holden VF Commodore is recognized thanks to a General Motors relative currently racing on the NASCAR circuit. The limited production 2014 Chevy SS sedan and the Chevrolet Caprice PPV share the General Motors Zeta platform with the Australian sold Holden VF Commodore. Making a high profile arrival in Australian Touring V8 Supercars for 2013, Nissan enlisted the experience of 2006 V8 Supercar champion Rick Kelly and brother Todd as part of a new Altima race effort. Michael Caruso and James Moffat are also campaigning a pair of Nissan Altima race cars in 2013 powered by a custom V-8 engine. The fourth competing make in 2013 Australian V8 Supercars is the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG campaigned by three competitors this season. 28 cars total are set to part of the 2013 Austin 400 race event.

Several teams involved in the Australian V8 Supercars circuit have prepared special paint schemes for their inaugural North American event. Normally running a black and red paint scheme with Australian auto part retailer Supercheap Auto prominently displayed, the 2005 championship driver Russell Ingall will don a yellow and black colour on his #17 Holden VF Commodore for the Austin race weekend. Jonathon Webb’s Team TEKNO has also chosen to debut a new livery promoting Darrell Lea soft liquorice for the Austin 400 race.

Having over $100 millions of cars and equipment flown overseas by two Boeing 747 airplanes, a lot is being invested in the V8 Supercars’ first United States event. With less than a week before the various V-8 powerplants will be revving at the Circuit of the Americas, the prelude to the event has already involved a driver swap between NASCAR Sprint Cup driver Kurt Busch and Holden Racing Team pilot James Courtney.

Oh, those lovable Italians, always showing off and looking good.

Back in March, Lamborghini stole the spotlight at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show with the Veneno supercar – only three will ever be made (well, technically four if you count the one at the show which will stay at the Lamborghini factory,) and while mechanically it’s not much different than the Aventador, to say the Veneno looks extreme would be an understatement:

And now, for their 50th Anniversary, Lamborghini has created yet another crazy piece of…umm…interesting design.

To me, it looks like a scaled up version of one of those Hot Wheels extreme version toys, and will more than likely be made into one.

To Lamborghini and famed designer Walter De Silva though, it is, and I quote, “designed purely for hyper-sophisticated people who want only the most extreme and special things in the world. It represents hedonism taken to the extreme.” Which is precisely what Lamborghini should be.

Problem is, you can’t buy it. Nobody can.

Except this guy.

Again, the Egoista is mostly an exercise in design and aerodynamics; it’s powered by a similar version of the Gallardo’s 5.2-liter V10 but produces 600 hp.

It’s a single-seater, and the cockpit (which is made entirely of carbon fiber and aluminum,) requires an unusually complicated entry and exit. According to the press release, to get out of the car “the driver must remove the steering wheel and rest it on the dashboard, open the dome with an electronic command, stand up in their seat, sit down on a precise point of the left-hand bodywork, then swivel their legs 180 degrees from the inside of the cockpit to the outside of the vehicle. At this point they can set their feet down and stand up.” I’d call it a dance.

The whole car is modeled to closely resemble a fighter jet, which is an ongoing theme with Lamborghini.

The cockpit is bare-bones with minimal instrumentation but a heads-up display. They said it was designed with the concept of being able to take the cockpit and put it into a car or jet. And yes, it is removable.

From the side, the Egoista is meant to look like a bull about to charge with its horns lowered. As you may expect, it’s got all sorts of flaps that come up and down automatically depending on conditions and speed.

The lighting is meant to be more like an aircraft’s lighting systems; instead of focusing on front and rear lighting, the headlights are “LED clearance lights” to be seen from the side and front. On top of the two xenon headlamps, they’ve added two white front lights, two red rear lights, a red flashing light on the tail, two orange side markers, and two lights on the roof, red on the left and green on the right. Excessive? Exactly. Must be cool to see at night.

They’ve even went as far as to make the bodywork and wheels out of antiradar material. Which I’m sure is illegal as hell, but undeniably awesome.

And in case you’re wondering, “Egoista” is Italian for “Selfish.”

How fitting.

Since 1974, Porsche has consistently pursued the power plateaus that turbocharging on the 911 sports car. Four decades with turbocharger technology has given Porsche a distinction of championing the technology ahead of many other, larger automakers. Approaching the 40th anniversary since the first 911 Turbo was introduced, Porsche has decided to commemorate the milestone in the same famous as the 50th for the Porsche 911 with a completely reengineered vehicle. Constructed on the new 911 platform, the 2014 model year Turbo and Turbo S sports cars will be the cure to performance seekers not content with 400 horsepower of the Porsche 911 Carrera S.

The 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo and Turbo S have been created as the next evolution of the vehicle incorporating new traits never seen on predecessors. The exterior of the new 911 Turbo utilizes active aerodynamics through a three-position adjustable front spoiler and rear wing under pneumatic control. Full-LED headlamps are optional on the Porsche 911 Turbo model but standard equipment on the 911 Turbo S package. Advertised as the widest body of all of the 911, the Porsche 911 Turbo has been presented with a considerably larger stance. Almost three inches wider than the rear-wheel drive Porsche 911, the 911 Turbo also possesses a significantly wider rear track. The Porsche 911 Turbo rides on 20-inch forged aluminum wheels designed specifically for the new car. At 3,516 and 3,538 pounds in weight, the Porsche 911 Turbo models will be heaviest version of the sports car. The inclusion of multiple performance and handling features is the likely culprit for the increased weight. No worries, the enhancements incorporated on the 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo and Turbo S will outweigh the increased bulk.

Both the 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo and the 911 Turbo S move through the Porsche Traction Management all-wheel drive system. A host of Porsche handling and management technologies are incorporated into the new 911 Turbo. Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control active anti-roll system and PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) is included the new 911 Turbo sports car. Optional Porsche Carbon Ceramic Composite Brakes and the Sport Chrono Package Plus would permit a driver to fully extract the driving bliss of the German machine.

For the next-generation Porsche 911 Turbo, all-wheel drive will also feature all-wheel steering. Rear wheel steering will debut on all 2014 model year 911 Turbo sports cars. A technology working on electro-mechanical actuators, the rear wheels can turn up to 2.8 degrees on the 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo. Under 31 miles per hour, the rear wheels will pivot in an opposing direction. At speeds above 50 miles per hour, the rear wheels will steer in the same direction as the front improving directional control. Porsche states the rear wheel steering system is similar to expanding the wheelbase by 19.6 inches at high speeds. Able to handle a turning of 34.8 feet, Porsche 911 Turbo’s rear steering system tightens the turn by 1.6 feet. Attempted famously on Japanese vehicles as well as on General Motors pickup trucks, the concept of four-wheel steering has not been largely successful. Obviously, Porsche believes the addition of rear wheel steering on the new 911 Turbo models will be the ‘turning’ point for the technology.

Powering the high-tech, all-wheel drive sports car preceded by a storied tradition, the 40th year of turbocharging the Porsche 911 will offer a fantastically loud cheer. Two turbocharger units using Porsche’s variable turbine geometry is attached to a 3.8 liter flat-six cylinder engine. Improvements to the 2014 model year’s powerplant have resulted in moderate horsepower gains over the previous 911 Turbo. The new Porsche 911 Turbo pumps out 520 horsepower. Presenting a 30 horsepower boost over its predecessor, the 911 Turbo S variant expels 560 horsepower. A traditional manual transmission choice has not been declared for the 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo. The lack of a stick shift is definitely going to send some sports car purists into a rage if they cannot accept a dual-clutch transmission. A modernized version of the PDK (Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe) gearbox will have the task of handling the turbocharged power from the flat six-cylinder engine. Seven speeds from the PDK transmission will not only provide the responsive performance Porsche 911 Turbo owners expect but will participation in saving fuel. The new Porsche 911 Turbo adds auto start/stop capability allowing the engine to shut down when coming to a stop or while coasting.

Improved performance technology of the Porsche 911 Turbo and Turbo S heightens the aggressive street legal personality to new levels. Adding the optional Sport Chrono Package Plus, acceleration from a standstill to 60 miles per hour requires 3.2 seconds. With the influence of 560 horsepower, the Porsche 911 Turbo S can jump from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 2.9 seconds. The Porsche Turbo S can achieve a top speed of 198 miles per hour (three more than the previous model).

A mix of gripping performance and high-end comfort, the atmosphere inside the 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo’s cabin has been tastefully upgraded on the new sports car. A Bose sound system is standard on the Porsche 911 Turbo while a high-quality Burmester system is available at an extra cost. The 911 Turbo S model receives exclusive interior trim comprising of a unique black and Carrera Red colouring. Sport Seats Plus featuring 18-way adjustment and a memory function is also standard on the Turbo S. Some of the Porsche 911 Turbo’s most interesting driver features are geared for safety. Along with radar cruise control, the 911 Turbo provides available technology using a camera that recognizes road signs and speed limits. Similar traffic warning technology has been rolled out on BMW and Volvo products.

Appropriately priced for an upgraded Porsche 911, the 520-horsepower 911 Turbo model starts at $148,300. For the high-powered 560-horsepower Porsche 911 Turbo S, the manufacturers suggested price jumps to $181,100. Arrival of the first 911 platform-based Turbo models is scheduled to reach the United States in the latter part of this year.

Officially entering May, the open wheel motorsport world is quickly setting up for the most famous 500-mile race. A race so much a part of the month the entire festivity operates under the “Month of May” moniker, Indianapolis Motor Speedway prepares to welcome great drivers from across the globe wanting to sip victory milk beside the Borg-Warner Trophy. The 2.5-mile oval many famously note as the Brickyard is an automotive event meant to showcase the best. Exclusively supplying the Indy 500 pace car since 1997, General Motors is given the task of providing a vehicle worthy of representing the Memorial weekend main event. After much speculation, the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray will become the 97th vehicle to lead competitors to the green flag of the Indianapolis 500.

Electing for the coupe version of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, the official 2013 Indianapolis 500 Pace Car wears a Laguna Blue Tintcoat colour over its composite body panels. Door graphics and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway crest on the upper rear quarter panels complete the subtle, simple appearance of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray coupe. Previous pace cars (including earlier Corvettes) have demonstrated a flair for elaborate graphics.

The 6.2 liter LT1 V-8 engine muscling-out a meaty 450 horsepower and 450 pounds-foot of torque, will power the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Pace Car. Similar to the twin-turbocharged Chevrolet V-6 engine set to power some of the 2013 IZOD IndyCar entrants, the LT1 engine features the modern marvel of gasoline direct injection. Shifting through a seven-speed manual transmission, the Indy 500 pace car driver of the 2014 Corvette Stingray will be keeping pace aided by Active Rev Matching. Optional Z51 Performance Package is included on the Corvette pace car assuring power delivery will be prompt and smooth. Chevrolet emphasizes that no additional performance upgrades have been made to the 2014 Corvette Stingray pace car.

The choice to use the 2014 Corvette Stingray was undoubtedly a natural for Chevrolet. When the seventh-generation sports car was officially introduced to the press and public at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray received universal attention. When the cover was removed from the 2014 Corvette Stingray, rarely before did the premiere of a new car incite a trending status on social media. After the Detroit show, the new Corvette remains a principal attraction at every event. The 2013 Indianapolis 500 pace car duty is only icing on the cake to what has been a blissful conquering of sports car press even before the vehicle has hit the streets.

Inside the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Pace Car, the two-passenger cabin is presented with aluminum and carbon fiber trim. The 2013 Indianapolis 500 pace car’s interior equipment will deviate just slightly from soon-to-be released road-going version. Mandated safety equipment is included on the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Pace Car providing extra precautions when lapping the Brickyard track. An LED strobe light bar mounted in the Corvette Stingray’s rear greenhouse area is the final modification performed to the pace car in preparation for the Sunday, May 26th race. The guest driver of the 2013 Indianapolis 500 for the parade has yet to be announced. Unlike the news of the pace car, the pace car driver for the 97th Indianapolis 500 should present a major wildcard for Memorial weekend‘s second-most envied drive (First being the winner of the Indy 500).

Recognized as “America’s sports car“, it is surprising to note the Chevrolet Corvette’s history at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway didn’t start until 25 years into the vehicle’s production. When the first Corvette pace car was introduced in 1978, the Camaro had already been paraded around the Brickyard twice. However, in the past 35 years, the Chevrolet Corvette has made up for lost time. The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray will provide the famous sports car with its record 12th Indianapolis 500 pace car honour. The 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray will become the fifth generation of the sports car to hold pace car duties at Indianapolis.

Race drivers, they are heroes amongst men. Some are cold and calculating…some are quiet and contemplating. Most have their pre-race rituals and are somewhat of a mystery. So what goes on inside the mind of a driver in the heat of battle? It has to be fuel strategy, manipulating the draft, or in rally drivers cases listening very carefully to their co-pilot to make sure they are prepared for the next couple rapidly approaching corners…right? Well we usually only get the little snippets of radio conversation between them and their crew, but I have gone to the trouble to find a few drivers who have been miked up.

If you really want to get into the mind of a driver the best solution is to have the visor cam miked up! Here we have Chris Baker in a Dodge Pro Formula Series race at Laguna Seca fighting through heavy traffic and battling with the points contenders! As cars go spinning and he is racing wheel to wheel…what must be going through his head? Surely not Die Hard lines…

Allrighty then! Maybe it isn’t as sophisticated as I thought…but then again he seems pretty relaxed! While sliding through the sand towards a barrier he even had the presence to mind to flip an angry bird at his opponent. At least he has his priorities straightened out!

Sometimes in the heat of battle you might say things you don’t mean or get a little too excited. However this next guy might be going way too far, what do you think? I don’t know if it is so much road rage, or if he is turning to the dark side!

Careful there, you might burst a blood vessel! I take back my first description. This is either Batman on a track day or there are bath salts involved, possibly both! Some would argue the video is fake because the mustang goes around several corners, however it did spin off the track, proof that it’s real. I am also fairly certain this is what will be happening under Fernando Alonso’s helmet as he chases Sebastian Vettel all season.

Of course we have a rally video for you. This gentleman is quite distressed getting stuck behind slower cars…this reminds me all too much of my daily commute.

There is always that one person who is going under the speed limit in the fast lane, or that one person who keeps touching their brakes for no reason what so ever, I know we can all relate. …And we have another angry rally team but this time the co-driver is getting perturbed. At least…I don’t think that was in the pace notes.

So now we know. When they aren’t on the radio to the team talking about pit strategy they are usually just talking to themselves. The next time you flip on a race you can bet some are calling each other assholes, others are yelling NEMESIS…or they just sound like the average person stuck in traffic! I think all of these guys can learn a valuable lesson from Kevin though. This is how you handle road rage properly. After all, there is always an app for that.

This is a terrific time to be a speed demon with a bank account fill of money. Conversely, it is also a terrible time for the banks when they realize vast amounts of cash flowing towards the purchase of fine, high performance automobiles. With automakers borrowing racetrack inspiration in a volume unseen since the 1960s, we have recently been witness to several new examples of unbridled performance. Deemphasizing the use of infotainment solutions and other creature comforts that outrage sports car purists, a growing list of 2013 and 2014 model year street performers are poised to add an extra edge to the exhilaration of driving. Chrysler division SRT announced a 33-vehicle release of a lightweight Viper T/A model at the 2013 New York Auto Show. In the General Motors section of the past New York exhibition, the return of the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 presented a raw, street legal track athlete. Nissan becomes the latest name contributing a track-oriented vehicle using their already fierce GT-R supercar as the platform.

A limited edition release capped at just 150 cars for the United States, the 2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition supplies a driver to chance to wheel an aggressive production version of Japan‘s greatest current supercar. By first examination, the 2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition’s array of features is reminiscent of the Black Edition. Special black 20-inch RAYS forged wheels and dry carbon fiber rear spoiler are carried over to the 2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition. However, a series of minor touches prove to be major identifiers to something special.

Maintaining the Premium level GT-R twin-turbocharged, 3.8 liter V-6 intact as a 545 horsepower screamer, the Track Edition upgrades are by no means cosmetic. While the technologically advanced ride continues to feature the Bilstein DampTronic suspension system, race course tuning performed at the Germany’s famed Nurburgring was used to enhance the 2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition. Enlisting former professional racing pilot and current Nissan test driver Toshio Suzuki to shakedown the supercar, the 2014 GT-R Track Edition rides on a uniquely calibrated suspension setup. The addition of functional carbon fiber air inlets provide a racing-chic touch for the supercar. Brake cooling is also given a boost on the 2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition using modified guides to allow the Brembo supplied braking to breathe easier. A Track Edition specific front spoiler is also noted on the limited Nissan GT-R model.

The 2014 GT-R Track Edition to register a lower weight compared to Premium and Black Edition trim. Curb weight of the 2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition model is rated at 3,796 pounds (22 pounds lighter than the Black Edition). The majority of the weight savings is a result of the deletion of the rear seat. Instead of the standard Nissan GT-R’s 2+2 cockpit featuring a backseat that frequently punishes occupants with the tight and cramped accommodations, the GT-R Track Edition places a quilted cloth mat in where the seating would be placed. For the driver and the passenger, leather-appointed Recaro seats present a blue/gray pattern.

A vehicle available only at select Nissan dealerships, pricing for the United States-bound 2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition is announced at $115,710. Almost $16,000 more than a 2014 GT-R Premium trim version and $5,410 above the GT-R Black Edition, there will be at least 150 individuals who will find the adrenaline-packed sensation of the Track Edition model as money will spent.

2013 is being marked as a milestone celebration for many automobile gems. A golden anniversary is underway at supercar builder Lamborghini while Germany’s Porsche is also recognizing 50 years of the 911 production. In the United States, Chevrolet has been marking the 60th year since Corvette production started with the rollout of the seventh-generation vehicle. With all the anniversaries for high-performance sports cars, a more utilitarian vehicle has cause for a party. On April 30th, Land Rover and their trademark Series I vehicle was officially introduced establishing a new name in four-wheel drive travel.

First presented at the 1948 Amsterdam Auto Show, the Land Rover Series I was a response to post-war need for an agricultural vehicle. Prior to World War 2, the notion of carmaker Rover Company producing a utility vehicle was quite absurd. Rover had curved a niche for building upscale vehicles through the 1930s. However, German bombing that damaged their production facilities in the early stage of the war and a lack of luxury car demand convinced Rover to re-establish itself. A brainchild of engineer Maurice Wilks after experiencing the versatility of a surplus Jeep, the Land Rover Series I was promptly placed at the forefront of Rover Company.

Unlike the current luxury vehicle association of the Land Rover brand, the Series I was substantially more work-duty than its 2013 model year counterparts. Built on an 80-inch wheelbase, the 1948 Land Rover Series I shown at the Amsterdam Auto Show showcased an aluminum box-like outer structure. A freewheel four-wheel drive system and generous ground clearance provided the Series I with effective ability to drive across off-road terrain. The 1948 Land Rover Series I received a 1.6 liter four-cylinder engine mustering a paltry 50 horsepower. By comparison, the turbocharged 2-liter engine on the 2013 Land Rover LR2 generates 240 horsepower. The Land Rover Series I utility vehicle was also offered with a feature called power take-off. Available on heavy-duty pickup trucks today, this system allows an owner to use the drive a range of farm-based equipment. While not abundantly powerful, the Land Rover Series I’s attributes permitted British ranchers to travel across the full lengths of their property.

Constructed to the constraints of its time, the challenges actually helped make the 1948 Land Rover Series I successful. With steel was still being rationed in post-World War Two England, the choice was to use aluminum body panels. More expensive than steel, the use of aluminum allowed the awarded the Series I greater corrosion resistance and weight savings. In fact, looking forward to modern automotive technology, the restrictions shaping on the 1948 Land Rover Series I would be widely adopted by the industry. Rationing also resulted in greater attention devoted to the construction and overall design of the Land Rover Series I. Created for simplified manufacturing, the ladder frame chassis was created to make use of simple welding and tooling.

Developed for production relatively quickly considering damage of the Second World War and typical vehicle development cycles, the Land Rover Series I evolved from a working prototype in roughly one year. When the Rover Company developed their prototype utility vehicle, the company started with nothing other than Jeep chassis. Identified as the “Centre Steer“, the prototype’s center-located steering wheel conveyed more of a tractor-like vehicle. Though the prototype championed many characteristics of the Land Rover Series I production model, many aspects did not make it to the final product (notably the center-mounted steering column. Amusingly enough, the Land Rover Centre Steer prototype has become a somewhat divine vehicle in motoring history. While many believe the development vehicle was destroyed (as is the case with many concept cars), some maintain the belief the Centre Steer still exists as an undiscovered treasure.

Originally developed for farm use, the four-wheel drive quickly began a hot military product for the British Army. Eager to find their own successor to the American-designed Jeep, the Land Rover Series I was evaluated and ultimately won the approval of the military. Admiring the vehicle’s capabilities in addition to its simple, less expensive maintenance cost, the Land Rover Series I would lead to a relationship with armed forces that continues to this day.

The Land Rover Series I was produced between 1948 until the 1955 model year replaced with the Series II. Though the vehicle went through constant changes, the Series I would solidify principles included on the current Land Rover Defender. Even as the Land Rover division invests in unibody frames, turbocharged direct injection engine and modern electronics, principles introduced 65 years ago have been the driving inspiration for a go-anywhere vehicle.

With the conclusion of the 2013 indoor auto show tour, we witnessed many new exciting vehicles and innovations. Since its debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray coupe exceeded lofty expectations. Revealing the coupe in time for some major winter shows in the United States and Canada, Chevrolet waited until the Geneva Motor Show to premiere the convertible version of the 2014 Corvette Stingray. The 450-horsepower 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray transitions from exhibition car as General Motors will try to turn hype into sales. Preparing for the second half of this year when the new Corvette will be released from Bowling Green, Kentucky, pricing and features certify “America’s Sports Car” is treading into its seventh-generation as a world-class machine.

The good news is the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray starting price is well below what NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick paid for the privilege of owning the first coupe and convertible. Each sold with full proceeds going to charity, Hendrick bought the first publicly available 2014 Corvette coupe at the 2013 Barrett-Jackson Classic Car Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona for $1,100,000 US. Another Barrett-Jackson auction few weeks ago in Palm Beach, Florida saw the first 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray convertible hammered away for another seven-figure amount. Thankfully, production of the new Corvette will far exceed the run other recently revealed supercars Lamborghini Veneno or the LaFerrari.

For American enthusiasts waiting for the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray to hit a nearby showroom, you will find a starting price of $51,995 on the window sticker on the coupe. The 2014 Corvette Stingray convertible can be snatched at a base cost of $56,995. On both vehicle types, the 2014 Corvette Stingray’s price is roughly $1,500 higher compared to an equivalent 2013 C6 model. Including the destination cost, the vehicle prices will not account for taxes and licensing. Standard features on the new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray will include push-button start with keyless entry, power tilt/telescoping steering column, the five-position Drive Mode Selector, the unique dashboard display featuring two configurable eight-inch screens and, most excitedly, the 6.2 liter LT1 engine generating 450 horsepower.

The starting price will rise quickly on the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray with a series of tempting optional equipment. The 3LT interior package stands out as the most expensive add-on for the 2014 Corvette Stingray. Costing $8,005, the 3LT interior package upgrades the cabin with a full leather treatment. Napa leather seating are heated and ventilated with power lumbar support accommodating to the two passengers inside the 2014 Corvette Stingray. The 3LT interior package also includes a 10-speaker Bose surround sound audio system, navigation system and colour heads-up display. For a more wallet-friendly $2,495, the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray can for fitted with competition sport seating. Carbon fiber or a suede microfiber-wrapped interior trim is available for $995.

For what will probably exist as the most desired optional equipment group for the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray will be the Z51 Performance Package. The Z51 Performance Package delivers the maximum performance potential of the 450-horsepower 2014 Corvette Stingray through acceleration and cornering. Performance configured gearing, slotted brake rotors with cooling ducts, electronic limited-slip differential are some of the trick equipment offered with the $2,800 Z51 Performance Package. For $1,795, Magnetic Ride Control with Performance Traction Management is listed as an available feature with the Z51 Performance Packaged equipped Corvette Stingray. With the Z51 Performance Package advertised as the key to unleash the under four-second acceleration and over 1g cornering prowess of the 2014 car, a dual-mode exhaust system option will insure the sound of speed is part of the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. For a heighten external performance presentation, owners can opt for an exposed carbon fiber roof panel for $1,995 or red-painted brake calipers and black-painted wheels.

Starting amounts for the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray coupe and convertible model are manufacturer suggested retail prices for the United States. Depending on the popularity of the car, some dealers could be motivated to be greedier.

With HD quality resolution in the hands of so many people nowadays, there’s no shortage of on-line video compilations of automobiles. Auto shows, races or personal exhibitions of vehicles has brought the beauty of mechanized motion to a wide audience. Through my YouTube channel, even I have contributed to the countless collection of automotive related video.

Keeping my videos in of the equation, the quality of the footage and compilations can indeed vary from amateur to masterful filmmaking. A vivid account of the 2013 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, Born of a Blue Sky is on the higher end of the production scale. This week, I have been introduced to a particular online video treat created by Justin Lapriore of LetsMakeMedia. Over 16 minutes in length, the Born of a Blue Sky captures some of the most regal examples of motoring excellence.

A short film shot at March’s Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, Born of a Blue Sky grabs attention by capturing more than static displays of priceless vehicles. Seeing breathtaking cars powered by engines more than half a century old rolls to life on the Florida golf course is worth watching the video once. The film focuses on several marques celebrating anniversaries. Spawned as a direct assault on Ferrari’s sports car crown after Ford Motor Company’s failed bid for the Italian car builder, the GT40 was one of the first vehicles honoured in the film. 50 years since the conception of the Ford GT40 racecar, Born of a Blue Sky leads the video presentation early. An event that attracted several different Ford GT40s, the 2013 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance also featured the appearance of Dan Gurney who co-drove the supercar to the 24 Hour of Le Mans victory in 1967.

Along with the Ford GT40, lead vehicle roles in Born of a Blue Sky have Porsche 911 sports cars, various Lamborghinis and a 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray notably sharing in memorable film moments. There is also two potent moments of ride-along footage in Born of a Blue Sky. The first was a high-performance experience on-board a Porsche race car. A ripping roar blast of the rear-engined vehicle on an airport is captured with brilliance from several camera positions. Another enjoyable ride-along is captured as part of a tour. Riding on-board a lovely red Lagonda roadster, the footage following the Porsche ride captures two radically different but infectious moments in motoring.

While the vehicles are the most alluring part of the film, Born of a Blue Sky treats us to the true beauty of the cars beyond simply showing greatness. The sound of a Ford GT40 engine revving in one of the film’s opening scenes is one of those memorable engine noises. The pulsation of the Ford V-8 is raw 1960s performance you would not typically associate with an automotive concours (that is a refreshing thing). By the sound of the audience, the Ford GT40’s element was accepted at the premier exhibit. Throughout the film, the use of music has also been well applied.

Born of a Blue Sky fittingly revealed what was a superb outdoor automotive display. Occurring while I am living in what appears to be a never-ending winter, the 2013 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance has been shown in all its glory through Justin’s video.

The mid-to-late 1990s was a glorious renaissance period for performance cars. Formula 1 inspiration created the McLaren F1 using a BMW V-12 engine to become the then-fastest production car in the world. The Dodge Viper introduced in 1992 refined itself into a formidable performance coupe. The C5 version of the Chevrolet Corvette brought world-class speed and refinement back to the American sports car. At the very top, supercars took center stage in sports car racing as rules allowed super-limited production vehicles to compete in top classes at races such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. In 1997, the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR presided as one of those exceptionally developed racecars of the time.

Shortly after the original DTM Series folded in 1996, Mercedes-Benz devoted their motorsports resources to building a race vehicle to compete in the FIA GT Championship. In preparations for a 1997 championship starting in mid-April, Mercedes-Benz engaged in a rather swift development for what would be the CLK-GTR. Using computer aided design and clay modeling, AMG needed just 128 days to allow the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR to evolve from concept to race track-ready. Mercedes-Benz and AMG may have leapfrogged the construction of their racecar by studying the competitor of the time. Reports have indicated Mercedes-Benz secretly reverse-engineered a McLaren F1 in the creation of their speed machine. A picture of a modified test mule has confirmed this to be the case.

Presenting the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR in racing trim as well as a street version, the FIA granted entrance of the German supercar ahead of a four-hour event at the Hockenheimring. Wearing the badging and characteristics of a production coupe (even a hood ornament), the CLK-GTR racecar shared few Mercedes CLK parts. A purebred racecar featuring the earth-shaking power of a mid-mounted V-12, the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR was exclusively shaped with carbon fiber bodywork (more common today but considered highly exotic in the 1990s). Butterfly-style doors on the vehicle allowed easier driver changes during the course of a FIA GT Championship event. The headlamps and the front grille remain the only carryover pieces from the more conventional Mercedes-Benz CLK in the creation of their GT1 racecar.

Campaigned within the GT1 category through AMG-Mercedes in 1997, the McLaren F1 fielded by BMW Motorsport would not concede superiority. It was not until the fourth race at the Nurburgring that a Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR piloted by Bernd Schneider and Klaus Ludwig would be at the top of the podium. However, after that initial win, the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR cruised to victory in five of the final seven races of the 1997 FIA GT Championship. Resulting in a driver’s championship for Bernd Schneider, the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR GT1 car late season dominance gave the AMG-Mercedes organization the team championship.

In 1998, the pace of motorsports development relegated the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR out-of-date. Competing in two races (sailing to victory in both cases), Mercedes-AMG would replace the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR with the CLK-LM (an upgraded variant of the previous racecar). Bernd Schneider partnered with future Red Bull Racing Formula 1 driver Mark Webber recorded the CLK-GTR’s last FIA GT Championship win. Privateer organization Persson Motorsport respectably ran the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR through the remainder of the 1998 FIA GT Championship but didn’t capture a victory. Unlike the McLaren F1 or its corporate successor the CLK-LM, the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR would never race at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

In respect to homologation rules of the 1997 GT1 class cars, Mercedes-Benz needed to produce a minimum of 25 street legal versions of the CLK-GTR. That was fulfilled the following year. Buyers of the road-going version of the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR enjoyed almost all the styling and performance characteristics of the FIA GT Championship winning variant. 20 of the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTRs were coupes while the remaining five were produced as convertibles by H.W.A. GmbH (a motorsport company created Hans-Werner Aufrecht in 1998 after Mercedes-Benz wholly acquired AMG). The only major difference is a body-integrated rear wing replaced the race vehicle’s tail. Two-piece luggage set, battery charger and a first aid kit would come with the CLK-GTR road car.

The 25 Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR models actually featured a larger displacement engine than the racecar. Fitted with a 6.9 liter version of the M120 V-12 powerplant, the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR street car pumped out roughly the same horsepower as the 1997 GT1 racing sports car. An exception to this performance equality is an ultra-rare SuperSport model was given a larger 7.3 liter V-12 engine capable of 720-horsepower. Only two Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR SuperSport models are known to exist with the horsepower upgrade. August of 2012, a 1998 Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR SuperSport road car fetched $1,100,000 at the RM Auction in Monterey.

An impressive machine constructed during a very brief period where GT1 racing resulted from extreme supercars, the Mercedes-Benz CLK-GTR risks being one of those forgotten vehicles. Not enjoying the fanfare of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren or the current SLS AMG, the CLK-GTR short sports car racing career is still a legendary feat.
