In the 50^th year of Lamborghini’s first venture into the supercar business, 2013 has been a period where the company has celebrated with pompous designs and massive horsepower. How else should an exotic car manufacturer ring in a golden anniversary? The ultra limited Veneno and now the super radical Egoista concept car make clear Lamborghini is still charting a future packed with buzz-worthy exotic rides.

While Ferruccio Lamborghini’s Italian automaker was developing a reputation for building likable performance machines through the 1960s, cars like the Espada and even the ground-breaking Miura were outshined by cars coming from national rival Ferrari. Creating their newest vehicles in the lessons learned from the mid-engined Miura, Lamborghini contacted the Bertone design house and designer Marcello Gandini in the execution of a new futuristic supercar. First displayed as a concept car at the 1971 Geneva Motor Show under the name LP 500, the Lamborghini Countach was forged. Produced between 1974 and 1990, the Countach has resided on many bedroom walls of as the premier choice of all car posters.

The Lamborghini Countach’s shape grew from a sketchpad to become an icon. The wedged-shaped aluminum body was all the rage in the early 1970s. Straightening the curves associated with sports cars of the 1950s and 1960s, the principle behind the wedged-shaped vehicle design was honed for stability at high speeds. Ferrari BB512, Lotus Espirt and the De Tomaso Pantera were a few sports car builders working on a similar aerodynamic premise. For the Countach, the result was a supercar achieving a drag coefficient of 0.42. Unimpressive by today’s standards of advanced aerodynamic mechanics, the Lamborghini Countach’s airflow was noteworthy for its time. For entry by a driver and passenger, the scissor-opening door on the Countach became a trademark for future Lamborghini design. The body is based on tubular steel frame giving the Countach race car-like handling and driving performance.

Despite the Countach’s shape and structure remaining intact, the supercar went through upgrades. Over a 16-year production run, alterations to the Countach saw wider tires, a front spoiler and the bulky, unattractive but necessary front bumper. On later versions, a large rear wing would be infamously available on the Countach. Appearing functional, the option rear wing was actually a performance hindrance that resulted in a lower top speed.

Powered by a mid-mounted V-12 engine, the Lamborghini Countach was first a carbureted powerplant with a 3.929-liter displacement. Generating 375 horsepower, the 1974 Countach’s V-12 was considered quite a powerhouse. The engine power was enough to propel the first cars past 175 miles per hour. On the LP5000 version of the Countach released in 1982, the engine was enlarged to 4.8 liters allowing the supercar to offer more torque. Peak performance came in 1985 when Lamborghini introduced the Countach LP5000S Quattrovalvole model. Upgrading the engine size once again to a 5.2-liter displacement, the LP5000S Quattrovalvole gave the Countach’s powerplant a four-valve per cylinder layout. In Europe, the later model Countach motored with 455 horsepower and 369 pounds-feet of torque. With 0 to 60-mile per hour acceleration in around five seconds, the European Lamborghini Countach could achieve a 183-mile per hour top speed. American bound Countachs alternatively produced 420 horsepower due a fuel injection system replacing the carburetor setup.

Entering the marketplace on similar timing as the first Porsche 911 Turbo, the Lamborghini Countach lifted an Italian automaker to the peak of motorized envy. The release of the Countach corresponded in the aftermath of the oil crisis and economic imbalance. The 1974 model year was a humbling experience for the car, as only 23 cars were sold. Similar to the beginning of the Chevrolet Corvette, success in the performance car world took time for the Countach. Originally, the Lamborghini Countach had to be privately imported into the United States due to emission rules. Wealthy, supercar-crazed motorists needed to source their ride through an automotive grey market. It was not until 1982 when the Countach was officially available in the country. Yes, cabin space was limited, fuel economy was poor and the price crossed the six-figure level after the mid-1980s but elite motorists desperately wanted it. Over 2,000 examples of the Lamborghini Countach were produced for worldwide demand.

Production of the Countach officially ended on July 4^th of 1990. Making way for the Lamborghini Diablo, the Countach was a massive leap for supercar design many have attempted (mostly in vain,) to replicate.

Oh, those lovable Italians, always showing off and looking good.

Back in March, Lamborghini stole the spotlight at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show with the Veneno supercar – only three will ever be made (well, technically four if you count the one at the show which will stay at the Lamborghini factory,) and while mechanically it’s not much different than the Aventador, to say the Veneno looks extreme would be an understatement:

And now, for their 50th Anniversary, Lamborghini has created yet another crazy piece of…umm…interesting design.

To me, it looks like a scaled up version of one of those Hot Wheels extreme version toys, and will more than likely be made into one.

To Lamborghini and famed designer Walter De Silva though, it is, and I quote, “designed purely for hyper-sophisticated people who want only the most extreme and special things in the world. It represents hedonism taken to the extreme.” Which is precisely what Lamborghini should be.

Problem is, you can’t buy it. Nobody can.

Except this guy.

Again, the Egoista is mostly an exercise in design and aerodynamics; it’s powered by a similar version of the Gallardo’s 5.2-liter V10 but produces 600 hp.

It’s a single-seater, and the cockpit (which is made entirely of carbon fiber and aluminum,) requires an unusually complicated entry and exit. According to the press release, to get out of the car “the driver must remove the steering wheel and rest it on the dashboard, open the dome with an electronic command, stand up in their seat, sit down on a precise point of the left-hand bodywork, then swivel their legs 180 degrees from the inside of the cockpit to the outside of the vehicle. At this point they can set their feet down and stand up.” I’d call it a dance.

The whole car is modeled to closely resemble a fighter jet, which is an ongoing theme with Lamborghini.

The cockpit is bare-bones with minimal instrumentation but a heads-up display. They said it was designed with the concept of being able to take the cockpit and put it into a car or jet. And yes, it is removable.

From the side, the Egoista is meant to look like a bull about to charge with its horns lowered. As you may expect, it’s got all sorts of flaps that come up and down automatically depending on conditions and speed.

The lighting is meant to be more like an aircraft’s lighting systems; instead of focusing on front and rear lighting, the headlights are “LED clearance lights” to be seen from the side and front. On top of the two xenon headlamps, they’ve added two white front lights, two red rear lights, a red flashing light on the tail, two orange side markers, and two lights on the roof, red on the left and green on the right. Excessive? Exactly. Must be cool to see at night.

They’ve even went as far as to make the bodywork and wheels out of antiradar material. Which I’m sure is illegal as hell, but undeniably awesome.

And in case you’re wondering, “Egoista” is Italian for “Selfish.”

It’s not hard to make a Lamborghini look good – especially the sexy new Aventador. It actually takes some work to make one look terrible, but now we have the chance to do do that ourselves, if you have the heart.

We all know Dubai as being the mecca of supercars, where high schoolers are bought a Ferrari for their graduation gift and Lamborghinis are so common people have to make ridiculous modifications to theirs to stand out among the rest.

With a city full of 200 mph supercars, what are the police supposed to do?

Get their own 200 mph supercars, of course.

And that’s what they just did. The Dubai Police department just purchased this Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 for their fleet, fitted out in white with green Dubai police accents.

I’d hate to see that thing in my rear-view with lights flashing.

We aren’t sure if the Lambo has been modified for faster-than-stock use, but with a 700 hp V12 pushing the car from zero to 62 mph in 2.9 seconds, the only thing they’d have to be worried about are hypercars like Pagani and Bugatti with drivers who know what they’re doing behind the wheel.

Of course, to effectively drive a machine like the Aventador, you can’t just pop a kid with a driver’s license behind the wheels and expect a race driver.

Dubai Police officers are going to be receiving special training on driving the supercar in high-speed chase situations.

We certainly don’t need to tell you what Lamborghini was up to this year at the Geneva Motor Show. If you haven’t heard about the Lamborghini Veneno yet, where have you been? for a quick overview, the Veneno – of which only three will be made – uses the Aventador’s 6.5-liter V12 engine tuned to 750 hp. They’ve managed to cut the weight down to 3,190 lbs, which is lighter than a Honda Accord, allowing the car to reach sixty from zero in only 2.8 seconds and move on to a top sped of 221 mph. How much do the three lucky buyers have the privilege of paying for such a machine? Just under $4 million a pop. Lucky them.

Aside from the Veneno reveal, which stole attention from all the rest of the show, the flamboyant Italian supercar maker displayed three other current models sitting alongside the new one.

At last year’s Geneva show, if you remember, we got to witness the unveiling of the Lamborghini Aventador J Concept (that’s Jota, or “yah-tuh”,) which was the precursor to the new Aventador Roadster, of which we see an extremely white version sitting to the Veneno’s left:

Not quite as fun to look at as the Aventador J Concept, but a tad more reasonable to drive and own, I would imagine:

To the Veneno’s right sits the regular old Aventador LP 700-4, which is still quite impressive to look at in person, and in the back, the new Gallardo LP 560-4.

Well it’s taken some time but I’ve finally sorted out the pictures from the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, and I’ve uploaded them all here for your enjoyment.

The show itself was massive this year; bigger than ever, in fact, and saw the world premiere of more than a few relevant cars.

For starters, Ferrari unveiled the successor to the Enzo, the weirdly-named Ferrari LaFerrari. Although technically the name of the Enzo was “Ferrari Enzo Ferrari” so maybe they’re just not great at naming their hypercars. Not that they have to; of course every one they make, they sell before it’s launched. To be honest I’m not all that impressed with the new car. Yeah it’s got huge numbers: 952 hp from a 6.3 liter V12 attached to two electric motors (yup it’s a hybrid,) but it’s just kinda…meh. It’s nice looking but doesn’t seem that extreme, and it doesn’t seem like the industry-changing hypercar that it needs to be. Look at its lineage: The Ferrari 250 GTO, F40, F50, Enzo…all were incredible cars pushing the limits of what was possible at the time and remain extremely coveted today. I just don’t feel like the LaFerrari is going to do that, but only time will tell.

Next huge news is Lamborghini’s unveiling of the Veneno supercar. The Lamborghini Veneno is extremely “out there.” Just like a Lambo should be, of course, and has wild angles and extreme vents and just looks absolutely wild. In person it’s not actually that attractive, but it’s very striking. The Veneno is mostly an Aventador in disguise, but with an obviously different body and therefore aerodynamics to propel the 750 hp monster from 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds, up to a top speed of 221 mph. How exclusive is it? It costs $3.9 million, there are only three being made, ever, and they’ve already been sold. Chances are if you didn’t see it at Geneva, you’ll never see one in person. Sorry.

Rolls Royce made a lot of hoopla with the unveiling of the Wraith – basically a two-door Ghost but sportier and more powerful – of which they’ve been leaking pics recently. Interestingly it’s being shown off as a driver’s car, a GT. Something you’d rather drive than be driven in. A new image for Rolls? Probably not, but it’ll take some business from Bentley I’m sure. We finally get a real successor to the McLaren F1 with the P1 – an incredible hypercar from the British racing team, and this time there’s no collaboration with Mercedes to screw things up. The McLaren P1, although we’ve seen it before, is impressive. I don’t think it’s as timelessly sexy as the F1, but it’s got a 903 hp twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 paired to an electric motor (Ferrari’s not the only hybrid supercar in town,) and is limited to a top speed of 217 mph. Forget about zero to sixty times, these types of cars are on another level; the P1 goes from 0 to 300 km/h (186 mph) in less than 17 seconds. In case you’re wondering, 0-62 mph takes less than 3 seconds. There are only 375 being made, and I have a feeling it’s going to be damn near the top of the Top Gear power laps board.

Some other big news, although everyone expected it, was the unveiling of the Chevy Corvette Stingray Convertible. It’s the same as the Stingray, but with a soft top. Not much else to talk about there, really. Toyota also debuted its GT-86 (Scion FR-S & Subaru BRZ clone) convertible, the FT-86 Open Concept. Same deal there. Base car, no top. Looks better as a coupe.

Lastly in the big news for the show, Spyker is making a comeback! After many years of making incredibly unique supercars (I’ve always called them the definition of exotic,) and financial uncertainty, they’ve lifted the veil on their latest car: the B6 Venator. While details are still up in the air on the car, it’s being made as an entry-level Spyker at a much lower pricepoint than the C8 Aileron but featuring a V6 making around 375 hp. Their market for this car are folks who already have an Aston V8 Vantage and Porsches and maybe even a V8 Ferrari or two but want something in which “they’ll never pull up to another one at the stop light.” They’d like to keep production numbers under 500/year to retain its exclusivity.

Like marriages, milestone anniversaries for auto companies can be celebrated in one of two ways. Sometimes (sadly) it is disregarded. Such was the case with the North American arm of Toyota transfer through their 50th anniversary of sales in 2007. Ford Motor Company will likely engage in promoting the 50th year of the Ford Mustang in 2014 but the 25th year of the Taurus sedan barely received a mention in 2010 and 2011. Fortunately, it is a relief to automotive fans numerous automakers regard their anniversaries with deeper consideration than most married men bid to their own partnership. Celebrating its 50th year of building desirable high-performance sports cars, Lamborghini has figured no matter way to commemorate the occasion with a special supercar. Set for exhibition at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, the highly limited Veneno production supercar is something only an occasion such as fifty years in business could realize.

An Italian sports car company, Lamborghini has a history of showing plenty of friendship to Spain. Starting with the fighting bull badge adorning all of the Italian supercars since founder Ferruccio Lamborghini commissioned the 350 GTV, the latest Aventador name is borrowed from the Spanish language word for fan. The Lamborghini Veneno is yet another vehicle demonstrating the intertwined cultural between two countries. The translation of the word “venom” in the Spanish tongue, Veneno is an appropriate name for the aggressive motor vehicle. Comprised of carbon fiber-reinforced panels such as the automakers Forged Composite and CarbonSkin, the Lamborghini Veneno is one of the leanest yet meanest supercars ever to exist.

Utilizing some of the Aventador LP-700-4’s qualities including the 6.5 liter V12 powerplant and structural technology, the Lamborghini Veneno explores the next step of lightweight, high-horsepower supercar extravagance. Appearing just like a modern prototype sports car that successfully completed the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Lamborghini Veneno is an aerodynamically perfected shape for overall performance. Shaped entirely with carbon fiber to promote superior straight-line speed, the focus on maintaining maximum aerodynamic downforce means the airflow around the Lamborghini Veneno supercar is managed like a visual symphony. The Veneno is another extension on the engineering inspiration displayed years ago on the Lamborghini Sesto Elemento concept car.

All Lamborghini Veneno production models will feature a grey metallic exterior heightened in appearance by black carbon fiber. Designed to a Y theme, the attractive yet functional contouring has influenced the headlamps, taillights and engine cooling vent layout. The six engine cooling openings are configured to leave a central tail on the Lamborghini Veneno says improves stability and braking. An adjustable rear wing found on the back of the Lamborghini Veneno insures the rear end remains firmly planted so the tires on 20-inch front and 21-inch rear alloy wheels can take care of business.

Mounted on a monocoque constructed using carbon-fiber reinforced polymers and aluminum sub frames, the Lamborghini Veneno enjoys a strong but light structure similar to the method used for the Aventador. With the Veneno, Lamborghini engineers have found ways to shave more weight from the process of building a 200-plus mile per hour supercar. A vehicle reportedly weighing just 1,450 kilograms (3,190 pounds), the Lamborghini Veneno is lighter than several mid-sized passenger cars including the Kia Optima and Honda Accord.

With a minimized weight, the super rare supercar Lamborghini receives a 750-horsepower version of the 6.5 liter V12 engine to complete the performance equation. The Lamborghini Veneno boasts a pounds per horsepower ratio of 4.25 instantly promising the supercar has a ferocious bite. The 7-speed ISR manual transmission and a permanent all-wheel drivetrain courts engine power in pursuit of impressive speed potential. Accelerating from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 2.8 seconds, the 750-horsepower Lamborghini Veneno can streak to a top speed of 221 miles per hour.

Configured with a typical two-seat supercar interior layout, the race car-inspired engineering exercised on the Lamborghini Veneno stylishly sells the vehicle’s performance. Lamborghini’s Forged Composite material goes into the creation of lightweight seating while a woven carbon fiber material called CarbonSkin upholsters most of the interior surfaces. In the instrument panel, the driver of the Lamborghini Veneno will note a full information center including unique data from a G-meter.

A production run limited to only three cars at a price of three million Euros including tax (3.9 million US dollars), the Lamborghini Veneno supercars will be defined by individualized accent colouring. Found on the lower part of the vehicle, the rear wing as well as inside the Lamborghini’s cabin, red, green and white (colours of the Italian flag) will insure that each Veneno is a unique mechanical creature.

With the prototype test car number 0 being shown at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, the three production Lamborghini Veneno will be produced later in the year. By the way, those three vehicles have already been claimed.

In the fashion world, the runway is a focal point where style and vision is showcased. Debuting looks projecting power, poise and elegance, there is a burning desire to win over an audience (particularly social elite figures). Similar to the driving ambition of fashion designers, exotic car manufacturers also crave the peak of motoring perfection in their creations. In order to show off the beauty of high performance, Lamborghini has taken five examples of their latest Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster down its own runway trip (a Miami International Airport runway). In the case of supercar style, the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster’s appearance on the runway would convey some timeless style.

Inaugurating a 10-day publication blitz directed towards media and dealerships, the 700-horsepower open-air Lamborghini supercar set out to match or beat the speed of a commercial jet airliner. The amusing time trial session of car versus airliner was a carefully orchestrated move between Lamborghini, Miami-Dade County Officials as well as the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration). Allowed to proceed when arriving and departing flights were not disturbed, five Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Roadsters performance potential was demonstrated in a unique way.

Keeping in mind their wasn’t an all-out drag race between the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 and the American Airlines Boeing 777 jet airliner shown in the pictures, the speed runs on a closed-course were conducted against an established measure of passenger plane takeoff velocity. Accelerating from 0 to 60 miles per hour in under three seconds, the Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster outpaced a passenger airliner between 150 and 180 miles per hour. The Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster also claimed an advantage when it comes to all-out speed. Since airliners takeoff would rarely exceed 200 miles per hour on a runway before lift-off, the Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster also claimed victory as it rocketed to 210 miles per hour on the Miami International Airport runway. The vehicle’s posted top speed is listed at 217 miles per hour but perhaps the Aventador Roadster and its 6.5 liter V-12 engine decided not to show off its true potential.

Celebrating 50 years, Lamborghini supercars is a certified Italian fashion house making excess speed in vogue. On the same day as the Miami International Airport runway exhibition, a parade of 50 cars rolled down Collins Avenue in Florida’s South Beach. Even traveling the speed limit, Lamborghini vehicles gather an admiring crowd. However, when a vehicle like the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster is pressed to its limits, it obviously enters a secluded zone.

Modern supercars have incredible features that are bringing these vehicles closer to jets on wheels. The speeds have gotten so incredible that there is now a new class of supercar: hypercars.

The trend has been to develop more lightweight vehicles made of composites with ridiculously powerful and highly tuned engines.

Here is a list of the ten supercars to watch for in 2013. As you’ll see, the trend for extreme speeds and high prices looks set to continue. For the dreamers we added one concept car that we would love to see developed and manufactured.

DC Avanti – $57,387

India has developed its first supercar with the DC Avanti. It has a wide smiling front with a crisp, efficient, compact shape. India has a large population with more wealth to spend on exotic cars, but the DC Avanti may be one of the most affordable on the list. This supercar is based around a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine delivering 261 horsepower. It goes from 0 to 60 MPH in less than 7 seconds, which is just a smidgen faster than your typical family SUV!

Pagani Huayra – $1,360,000

The Pagani Huayra bursts with energy and looks like a power plant ready to explode. The lightweight carbon-titanium chassis weighs less than 3,000 pounds. This machine is built for pure speed with its 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V12 engine. The Huayra reaches 230 miles per hour with 700 horsepower.

Koenigseggs Agera R – $1,611,000

The Swedish Koenigsegg Agera R has a race car design with enhanced aerodynamics. It looks like it is about to pop a wheelie. It reaches 273 miles per hour. It is run on a 5.0-liter V8 DOHC for 0 to 60 miles per hour in 2.9 seconds. It can use E85 or E100 biofuel. Its one-piece exhaust outlet is unique.

Porsche 918 Spyder – $845,000

The Porsche 918 Spyder hybrid has a 4.6-liter, V8 engine delivering 800 horsepower. This Porsche hybrid has three electric motors reaching 198 miles per hour. This exotic mainstay runs from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3 seconds. Only 918 units will be made, so you can expect demand to be strong. At least you know the resale value will be strong.

Ferrari F12 Berlinetta – $330,000

Ferrari has achieved a well-deserved reputation for motoring excellence. The efficient Ferrari F12 Berlinetta 6.3-liter, V-12 engine reaches 731 horsepower. The Berlinetta goes from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.0 seconds. Immediate acceleration is delivered by this well-made famous model. The steering is delicate to provide great control for the driving elite. This superfast Ferrari has arguably the most bang for the buck out of this bunch.

Lamborghini Aventador GT – $387,000

Since 1963, Lamborghini has set the standard for many supercars with its jaw-dropping appearance. The Lamborghini Aventador GT has a powerful mid-mounted 6.5-liter, V12 engine. This unique model is a four-seat supercar with shortened scissor doors. Now the entire family can enjoy the supercar’s speed. With 700 horsepower, the Aventador GT is expected to launch at the March 2013 Geneva Motor Show.

McLaren 12C Spider – $211,839

Since 1989, McLaren has been setting speed records for the supercar, street-legal class. The McLaren 12C Spider comes in a convertible or coupe version for 2013. Its 6.0 liter, V12 engine goes from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4.6 seconds. With 510 horsepower, it is less potent than competitor models. The McLaren’s top speed is 183 miles per hour.

Tramontana XTR – $800,000

The Spanish Tramontana XTR generates 888 horsepower. This bull is run by a Mercedes-Benz 5.5-liter, V-12 twin-turbocharged engine. It is a 2-passenger supercar going from 0 to 60 in 3 seconds. The Tramontana XTR has a top speed of 200 miles per hour. Look for this model at the Geneva Auto Show in March 2013.

Bugatti Veyron Super Sport – $2,725,000

The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport features a 1,200 horsepower 8.0-liter, 16-cylinder engine that can power the car up to 268 mph. In other words – it packs a punch. It is after all, the fastest production car in the world right now.

Aston Martin One-77 – $1,850,000

Imagine driving 0 to 60 in 3.4 seconds, and powered by a 7.3 litre 12 engine that delivers 750 hp. Not only will you arrive at your destination quickly, you will arrive in style. The One-77 might be the best looking car on this list, and as you can tell, one of our favorites.

Lamborghini Estoque – Concept

The Estoque is one of the rare front-engine supercars built by Lamborghini. Its 5.2-liter, V10 engine has 6 speeds. This model has a lightweight aluminum architecture with carbon-fiber and all-independent, double-wishbone suspension. This full-size luxury car has a base curb weight of 3,850 pounds and height of 53.2 inches (1.35 meters). Sounds nice but at this point making it to the showroom floors anytime soon might be a stretch. The Estoque is not yet approved and would need at least four years to make the four-door sedan a reality. Economics may be part of the issue, but we will hold on to the vision a little while longer.

Introduced in a time of the year where many kids are compiling their Christmas lists, a highly desirable supercar toy amuses some with a notion to best experience 2013. Already a hot high performance offering, the 200-plus mile per hour Lamborghini Aventador would be a lot of fun for all ages (barring the impending stream of speeding traffics resulting in some overzealous use of the accelerator). Luring more than 1,300 customers, the fixed roof version of the flagship Lamborghini is officially unearthed as the Aventador LP-700-4 Roadster. Since the Aventador translated from Spanish language means ‘fan’, it only makes sense that Lamborghini provide passengers of the high-end super performance vehicle with an incredible breeze of which only 700 horsepower can supply.

Effectively, the designers behind the Lamborghini Aventador LP-700-4 Roadster beautifully incorporated the stealth fighter-like exterior proportions that shaped the hardtop model. In opening up the cabin of the Aventador LP-700-4 Roadster to the elements, Lamborghini engineers carefully tuned the vehicle so the topless driving experience is optimized. A wind deflector on the supercar guarantees that the passengers of the Aventador LP-700-4 Roadster will be partaking in one of the most pleasing high-speed rides with minimal unease from turbulence. A powered rear window is also instrumental in the Lamborghini Aventador LP-700-4 Roadster for both regulating the flow of air and for allowing the V-12 engine to be transmitted at just the right volume.

When conditions are less than ideal for open-air motoring, the Aventador Roadster features a two-piece roof structure. Created from Forged Composite (a material co-developed with golf outfitter Callaway) and RTM, the solid roof pieces weigh less than 6 kilograms (about 13 pounds). On sunny, convertible weather days, the lightweight roof panels can be stored in the cargo compartment of the Aventador LP-700-4 Roadster. The hardtop pieces are gloss black in colour creating an evident two-tone exterior finish to the outside of the Lamborghini when installed. While the low ground clearance allows the Aventador Roadster to hug the road, the tires the only contact points that matter. Moving under the influence of all-wheel drive, 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels Dione style rims are forged in light aluminum.

No longer covered by a fixed roof, Lamborghini realized that the inside of the Aventador LP-700-4 Roadster needed to be worth displaying. Fine Italian qualities flood the passenger compartment Interior leather called Sabbia Nefertem is wrapped around the two-seat cabin of the car. With a roof only temporarily part of a Roadster, a special automatic protection system has been integrated into the supercar’s structure.

Sharing the 700-horsepower, 6.5 liter V-12 engine and the ISR seven-speed transmission with the fore-running hardtop model, the Aventador Roadster does not compromise performance for the luxury of a removable roof. Thanks to crafty engineering and efforts to preserve aerodynamic efficiency, the Aventador LP-700-4 Roadster movement closely mirrors the existing fixed roof version of the Lamborghini. Acceleration from 0 to 62 miles per hour for the Aventador Roadster occurs in only three seconds. With a proper, straight run, the Lamborghini Roadster can trek to a top speed of 217 miles per hour.

The Roadster version of the Aventador comes at a premium. The Lamborghini Aventador LP-700-4 Roadster is listed at a cost of 300,000 euros (45,000 euros above the price of the hardtop). When sold in the United States, expect it to have a price north of the $400,000 range.

In the auto industry it’s never too early to talk about what’s next. Lamborghini is looking to increase the size of its model lineup, and it made a splash at the Geneva Motor Show this past March with the Urus SUV Concept. At the time it was favored for greenlight over the Estoque sedan due to the potential for greater growth.

Now word on the street is that the Urus (and Bentley EXP 9 F SUV) could be delayed to save cash. In the meantime though, CAR Magazine is speculating about the next introduction(s) in the pipeline for next year’s Geneva show. For one, there is supposedly two additional Aventador models. Lambo’s top-end car has always been a two-seater, but CAR says the company is considering adding a four-seat model GT model with two jump seats.

Reportedly “softer edged” than the standard car, the Aventador GT would have an extended wheel base and two small rear jump seats with a new door arrangement. It wouldn’t be spacious back there, but at least you could take more people with you (in theory). The idea is similar in concept to the four-door Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG patent drawings we saw a while back. Interesting. They could just greenlight the Estoque, you know….but, we digress.

What we already know is coming is the Aventador roadster, but some extra light has been shed on what to expect. Instead of canvas, a retractable hardtop panel is said to be in the works, similar in style to the McLaren MP4-12C Spider and Ferrari 458 Spider. A Spring/Summer launch is expected – no word on the Aventador GT. At this point we think the GT seems to be more of an experimental idea. Lamborghini tries one-off vehicles at these shows to generate interest – witness the Aventador J. We’ll be surprised if it sees the light of day as a production vehicle.

Purists rejoice – maybe? The European countries are seeing widespread financial issues and it is impacting automakers across the continent – even Volkswagen. So far the company has done very well in a difficult market, but sales are beginning to slow and the company is looking to cut output.

Given that financing is becoming a problem, VW is looking to increase liquidity as a precaution. VW finance chief Hans Dieter Poetsch said at the Paris Motor Show that it is “normal that one looks for items that aren’t imperative.” What that meant practically we didn’t know for sure. One thing is true though: models like the Bentley EXP 9F and Lamborghini aren’t exactly imperative.

Automotive News is now reporting that development of these SUVs for Bentley and Lamborghini could be delayed.
When you have seven brands, there is a lot of mouths to feed. The Volkswagen Group is a vast global enterprise with Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, Seat, Skoda and Volkswagen all under the same roof.

The company is under a directive to increase profits and sales, with the objective of becoming number one by 2018. European issues are causing problems in doing that though. Lamborghini wants to push sales to the 3,000 mark and Bentley wants to boost figures to over 10,000 units. To do that, both brands have shown off SUV models. Bentley’s EXP 9F has been poorly received but the Urus has gotten a lot of positive attention.

VW’s corporate structure is unique. The brands have a lot of autonomy and their own leadership hierarchy. Despite the fact that the Urus could be delayed, Lamborghini Chief Executive Officer Stephan Winkelmann says that Lambo is continuing to develop the model. Bentley spokeswoman Kerstin Sachl says that Bentley is pushing for approval by the end of the year. The decision could come as soon as November 23rd when VW’s board convenes to vote on future models and spending.

The current generation 2013 Lamborghini Gallardo is being sent off with a bang at the Paris Motor Show. The 2014 model year will bring the next-generation model to replace it. The current Gallardo has had a good run. It was introduced in 2003, as one of the first products to be designed under the ownership of the Volkswagen Group.

An “entry-level” Lamborghini, it was designed to boost the brand’s sales. Prior to that Lamborghini competed at the upper end of the supercar segment with the Diablo. The Gallardo boosted sales a rival to Ferrari’s entry-level models (then the 360 Modena). Fast forward to today and Ferrari has the 458 Italia, and the 430 Scuderia came before that. Clearly, Lamborghini has longer life cycles.

The Gallardo has been kept fresh though thanks to a bevy of update. Despite being the Gallardo’s last year, the car has gotten some styling updates up front and back. The theme is angular shapes, and the 2013 Gallardo has already generated some strong opinions. Lamborghini calls it more aggressive, and we think they did a good job of at least keeping it fresh. If you don’t like it you can still get a Gallardo like last year’s model though: only the LP560-4 Coupe and Spyder. Next year is what we’re really looking forward to though.

As far as the lineup goes, Lamborghini has added a (primarily appearance) send off package for 2013. It is called the Edizione Technica and is available on the top end Superleggera and Spyder Performante models. The Edizione Technica includes a new rear wing, carbon ceramic brakes and a suspension system that can lift the car when approaching a bump. People want their supercars to be showy, and the Technica offers three color combinations (whose names apparently are selected at random): Arancio Argos with accenting Nero Nemesis (orange/matte black), Nero Nemesis with accenting Arancia Argos ad Bianco Canopus with Arancia Argos (matte white and orange). We’ll take Bianco Canopus with Arancia Argos please.

Fuel economy regulations that impose restrictions on a boutique and exotic manufactures are getting a bit ridiculous. You don’t buy a Lamborghini for fuel economy. Thanks to government legislators though, companies like Ferrari and Lamborghini are forced to come up with new measures aimed at efficiency.

We’ve heard about hybrid systems (KERS we are fine with), forced induction and diesels making their way to super cars. We’ll take a naturally-aspirated V-12 super car thanks. For the Aventador, Lamborghini is preparing a host of additions aimed not at performance, but efficiency. According to GTSpirit they are set to appear on the 2013 Aventador. They include stop/start tech (to six-cylinders) and highway cylinder deactivation. Really? If I’m spending hundreds of thousands on an Aventador, I want to hear it at idle.

The stop/start system uses a capacitor versus a battery, and that enables quicker charging as well as a seven pound reduction in weight. The result is a start up in 180 milliseconds, versus Ferrari’s 230 milliseconds and 250 milliseconds for an average system. So, now we’re talking about milliseconds in stop/start systems….OK. The changes combine for a 20 percent improvement in fuel economy.

Other changes for 2013 included retuned dampers and springs, and reworked gauges and switchgear along with a slew of new carbon fiber accessories. Like the original, the 2013 Aventador is expected to launch at the Paris Motor Show next month. It’ll be interesting to see what customers and purists think of these changes. They should at least be optional. If that was the case though, we doubt that any would go for it. Doesn’t government have anything better to do with its time?
