The 2013 Super Bowl has wrapped in suspenseful style on Sunday night. As the Baltimore Ravens won the NFL’s greatest prize by fending off the San Francisco 49ers in the second half of the big game, the 34-31 victory was a battle worthy of its hype. On Monday, the winner of the Super Bowl’s most prestigious MVP Award was joined in the presence by another winning persona that was recently revealed at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

At the 2013 Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction, the rights to the first production example of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray was purchased by NASCAR superteam owner Rick Hendrick for $1,100,000. After a dramatic 47th Super Bowl in New Orleans, another high-profile future owner of North America’s most enduring sports car was part of the spoils awarded to one member of the winning Baltimore Ravens.

Honoured with Super Bowl XLVII’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award, Ravens’ quarterback Joe Flacco claimed a prestigious trophy named after the long-standing NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle. In addition to the Tiffany & Co silver Pete Rozelle Trophy, the 2013 Super Bowl MVP was granted with the future keys of a 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. Made possible by Chevrolet’s official sponsorship of the 2013 Super Bowl MVP Award, the presentation of a 450-horsepower 2014 Corvette Stingray will be the ultimate pleasure machine for a football player like Flacco to experience during the NFL off-season.

A more recent tradition has been Chevrolet‘s involvement in the MVP Award after the big game. Super Bowl XLV MVP Aaron Rodgers received a Chevrolet Camaro Convertible while Eli Manning was granted a 2012 Corvette GS last year based on his award winning performance on the gridiron. This year’s awarding of the 2014 Corvette Stingray also served as a way to document a story of a Chevrolet dealership’s recovery. In 2005, Banner Chevrolet was one of many businesses devastated by the effects of Hurricane Katrina. After suffering heavy damage and the loss of their 770-vehicle inventory over 7 years ago, Banner Chevrolet has since rebuilt and the auto group’s chairman Rick Flick awarded the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray to 2013 Super Bowl champ Joe Flacco.

Joe Flacco should expect to receive his own personal 2014 Corvette Stingray sometime this summer. Therefore, it is very possible that the new sports car will be found around Baltimore Ravens training camp for the next NFL season.

At a creative standpoint, we are currently witnessing a vibrant era in the automotive industry. Weathering some tough economic conditions and even confronted by challenges for more fuel-efficient vehicle fleets, most of the auto companies have raised their innovation game. Not just accepting the long-standing tradition of furthering design, tangible technology advancing engine, infotainment and other aspects of the driving experience makes exhibitions as such the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit a once-again captivating display.

This year’s auto show catered to a near-record paying crowd of over 795,000 people who inquired on the present and future of motoring. While the present or near present is dealt with vehicles such as the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, Infiniti Q50 and the Audi RS7 Sportback, a handful of concept cars display what could be some profoundly important insight into vehicles that will occupy the roads and highways in coming years. The following sampling to what could be the most influential concepts:

Ford Atlas Concept

The pickup truck business is a market as gigantic as the vehicles that inhabit it. At Ford Motor Company, truck sales alone (not including utility vehicles such as the Escape, Expedition or Explorer) account for amount 37 percent of their 2012 vehicle sales in North America. Last year, the F-Series line of pickup trucks represents over 645,000 vehicles sold by Ford. When Ford presented a pickup truck as their display centerpiece in Detroit, it makes quite a bit of sense.

Overall a rather production-ready design study, the Ford Atlas Concept is immediately remarked to this vehicle being the precursor to future Ford pickup trucks. Revealing multiple design cues of an upcoming Ford truck, the Atlas Concept crew cab exhibits multiple features to benefit use by drivers. A cargo bed not only includes multiple tie-down locations but 110-volt electrical outlets. There is also a Dual-Purpose Tailgate Step and Cargo Cradle that extends for greatly use as well as accessibility. Intelligent electronic features related to the Atlas Concept include a 360-degree camera system and Trailer Backup Assist able to bring relief to a very difficult task.

A pickup truck for the not-so-distant tomorrow, the Ford Atlas Concept makes use of a variety of energy-saving technologies. LED lighting is found inside and outside of the Atlas Concept truck. Without going into detail, the Ford Atlas Concept promotes power from a next generation EcoBoost engine. Aerodynamics have also been optimized with the Ford truck concept as active grille shutters, active wheel shutters and power running board are incorporated with this tough vehicle.

Honda Urban SUV Concept

When the Honda CR-V was introduced in 1997, it made a splash as a smaller sport utility vehicle. In a time where the sport utility vehicle market segment gained life, the CR-V presented a than-rare interpretation of a car-like utility. Times have changed and auto companies have now begun a transition to the next scale of compact crossover utilities. Based on the Honda Fit, attendees of the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit were treated a peek at a close representation of a production crossover set for release in 2014.

One of the first things the Honda Urban SUV Concept design excels in doing is winning over critics decrying Honda’s recent trend of conservative styling. Working with an overall length of 169.3 inches, Honda has integrated a decisive coupe-like appearance into the Urban SUV Concept cast by the roof sloping and hidden rear door handles. Executive vice president of sales at American Honda John Mendel commented on the auto company’s direction saying, “With the continued expansion of our North American manufacturing operations, we expect fuel-efficient and fun-to-drive ‘small’ cars to play a key role in meeting the needs of our customers in the U.S.”

The production version of the Honda Urban SUV Concept will be built alongside the Fit subcompact at a Mexican manufacturing plant set to open by the spring of 2014.

Smart Forstars

Years ago, there was some concern that the Smart brand has reached its peak. The nifty Fortwo has epitomized economy-geared driving across the globe inspiring imitation from others. However, Smart has fought with limited success in attempting to make their vehicles appear hip and exciting to image-conscious buyers. Debuting the Forstars concept car at the 2013 Detroit show, Smart wants everyone to see the electrified powertrain in one of the sportiest forms.

Given a front end appearing more like a Jeep product than a Smart product, the Forstars delivers some serious street creditability to the mellow small car brand. In order to present the Smart Forstars concept’s sporty look, the wheelbase was stretched rather sizably compared to their production vehicles. At 97.2 inches, the wheelbase of the Forstars is nearly two feet longer than the Smart Fortwo. An overall length of 139.8 inches places the Smart Forstars closely equal to the span of a Fiat 500.

Partly contributing to the Smart concept’s name, a glass roof brightens the small but well-equipped interior. The two-seat configuration features a two-tone leather cabin with a high-quality stereo system and Bluetooth connectivity options.

A beyond outrageous (and likely not be to appear on the production vehicle feature list anytime in the future) is the Smart Forstars video projector system. Mounted on the hood, the projector can be activated from an Apple iPhone via Bluetooth.

Toyota Furia

Without regret, I placed the Toyota Corolla on a list of boring cars last year. Not criticizing the vehicle as time-honoured solid, reliable transportation, the Corolla is simply a dull design. In theory, there should be not reason to expect building some style into the sedan would compromise the vehicle’s cornerstones. Well, it appears Toyota agrees choosing the 2013 Detroit auto show as the premiering showcase for a design concept meant to shape the future look of the Corolla.

Called the Furia or the Corolla Furia Concept, Toyota is advertising a future compact sedan that is actually attractive. Described as “Iconic Dynamism” by Toyota, the Furia Concept defines an edger four-door. Attitude asserting front end, chiselled bodylines and massive 19-inch wheels of the Toyota Furia Concept sends a strong message that the Hyundai Elantra, Ford Focus and Honda Civic will definitely take seriously.

Selling over 290,000 units last year in the United States, the Toyota Corolla is padding a sales volume of nine million vehicles since introduced in 1968. The Detroit debut of the Furia Concept is Toyota’s recognition that the auto company only sees the potential of great days ahead.

Call it a comeback of sorts. Just a few months ago, the LA Auto Show was so awful, it had left me cold on the direction of where things were headed in the near future for the auto industry. The 2013 Detroit auto show was jammed packed to the rafters with creative imagination; not to mention technical expertise and talent that featured many triumphs. The Detroit show was a complete 180 from LA that lit the fuse on some serious competition for both domestic and international competitors.

First, we need to talk about the technology in the engine bay and also in the cockpit. As cars get more efficient (smaller engines) as well as more autonomous (more sensors and computer controlled events), is there still room left in the world of today for a fun and engaging drive? I say that there is plenty of room left in both arenas. Engine “bulk” may be down; but with the addition of better engine mapping, better airflow, tighter tolerances, and the always welcome turbo or supercharging; a 6 or even a 4 can do the same work as an 8 of a decade ago. Smaller engines also mean less mass which as any Lotus owner knows can be an advantage – not to mention that it also frees up space for other goodies such as an electric motor and small battery pack that comes in handy for passing on the highway or simply passing a gas pump. Slightly autonomous driving is also trickling down to mainstream cars, which is a good thing for those that commute in the bumper to bumper stuff. As long as new driver aids leave the driver in the equation for as long as safely possible, I am all for it. Infotainment center stacks look to be headed towards I-Pad size and beyond; which makes me think that Tesla was not at all crazy for putting in its monster touchscreen now instead of looking like a run of the mill unit. By far my favorite trick piece of technology are virtual gauges that are reconfigurable. The new Corvette has executed this stylish and useful tool exceedingly well; managing to wipe away all of the Atari like digi-dashes of the past. Software updates will refine the look and responsiveness of many displays in the future for many models be it an econobox or a GT.

Now on with the part that most people go to auto shows for; the designs! The top two spots for breakthrough designs go to General Motors. The gold medal must be awarded to the Cadillac ELR, with the silver going the C7 Corvette. The bronze goes to Mercedes-Benz for their modern yet restrained CLA. Just behind the CLA; and missing out on the USA sweep was the very promisingly styled Lincoln MKC.

The ELR in production guise did not suffer the same fate as the Volt did when going from the show stand to the realities of production. Most of the styling elements remain intact from the forceful yet jewel like front clip; through the up-swept boomerang like angles of the stunning C pillars; ending in classic Cadillac vestigial tail fins that encase a mild boat-tail rear treatment. The ELR is stunning from all angels and is sure to inspire not only the entire Cadillac range but also other maker’s design efforts for the remainder of the decade.

The C7 Corvette Stingray has gone to the place where it needed to go; the realm of the Italian exotics without being a slavish copy or a caricature. To state it simply; the car has tremendous presence. The longer wheelbase improves the overall proportions and gives the body a tighter and more athletic appearance. The rear ¾ view; and full on rear views give the car a flow that goes from sweepingly sophisticated to the outright menacing. The four round exhausts are a nice touch that shouts American muscle, while future editions I would guess may move to a trapezoidal or rectangular design as a cue to even higher performance.

The MB CLA is A-OK in my design book. While not as breakthrough as the top two designs, the CLA brings a much needed dose of powerful sculpting that is still refined enough not to be truly polarizing. Although not on the show floor, the car did appear off site in Detroit and therefore counts. The front end has a gratifying mirroring of the lighting package with the air intakes below for a forceful yet non Audi appearance that was helped in part to the restrained MB treatment of the facade. The profile is mostly CLS which is also a good place to take from. The cove like side sculpting helps tie the side elements together and help sell the overall design as it extends from the headlights and front lip through to the rear wheels. The tail nicely melts away and is cohesive. All around a nice package that will completely destroy Volkswagen CC sales; as well as cannibalize C class sales as well.

Last is the honorable mention of the Lincoln MKC. It looks as though Lincoln is close to getting things right with their design language. The nose is still going through what seems is its tenth rhinoplasty but they are getting it close to being attractive while still being distinctive. It is still too much of a show car to be taken seriously, but perhaps next year we will see a true pre production version. Worth noting is the very well executed clam-shell rear hatch that adds a great character line to the rear quarter.

Overall, Detroit was an amazing show – bring on the inspired insanity of Geneva!

A Sunday night in January had never meant so much to automotive enthusiasts as it did just over 24 hours ago. An event attended by select members of the press along with virtual viewers through a multitude of webcast sites (YouTube recorded over 56,000 watchers to a dedicated Chevrolet live stream prior to 7PM Eastern time), we were granted sight of a rare mechanical metamorphosis.

In the past 60 years in world history, there has been 23 James Bond movies, 12 New York Yankee World Series champion teams, 11 presidents of the United States and 25 seasons of Survivor. While the last example may not compute for many as a historic milestone, it does highlight a rare moment in the automotive world. Only six generations of the Chevrolet Corvette have been presented as a catalyst to the American motoring landscape. Every time reaching into different performance boundaries, each major redesign of the Corvette has become a reference point in six decades of sports car history. As we stand in 2013, it is a time where all automobiles are encouraged to break the molds of previous vehicles. On Sunday, the seventh-generation Chevrolet Corvette defines an all-new realm for high-performance driving.

Being one of the many who watched the live streaming presentation of the C7 version of Chevrolet’s enduring sports car, I sat in awe as the Corvette Stingray was first displayed for public eyes. Plainly said, the creative, new shape to the classic two-seat Chevrolet is a spectacle worth the attention it has or will receive in the coming days, weeks and months.

The most impacting change comes purely by announcing the 2014 model name. The word Stingray is revived in relations to the Chevrolet Corvette after an absence since the mid-1970s. Depicted in either one or two words, Stingray has been part of some great Corvette memories. The moniker’s retirement resting on performance-choked Chevrolet Corvettes of the 1970s made the return of Stingray for the 2014 model year vehicle a liberation. General Motors vice president of global design Ed Welburn expressed, “We knew we couldn’t use the Stingray name unless the new car truly lived up to the legacy. The result is a new Corvette Stingray that breaks from tradition, while remaining instantly recognizable as a Corvette the world over.”

The C7 Corvette Stingray could be seen as the most radical exterior retouch since the 1963 model. The face of the 2014 Corvette Stingray wears the aggressive expression high-performance sports car lovers want. A large grille opening coasts shadows of the first generation roadster. Enhanced HID headlamps coupled with LED lighting accents front and rear surfaces delivering superior performance illumination in addition to the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray’s kinetic movement. After 35 years, the wraparound fastback style rear window is abandoned on the new Corvette. It is also the first time that side rear windows will be seen on a Chevrolet Corvette since the 1962 removable hardtop.

A neglected area of the sports car in past redesigns of the Corvette has been the rear portion. On the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, the vehicle is quite willing to give its followers a look at something very brilliant. From front to rear, the new Chevrolet sports car is aerodynamically balanced machine intent to live up to its appearance.

Besides looks, the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is a standout structurally. The seventh-generation car will incorporate carbon fiber to a degree not seen before in the base trim Corvette. Taking lessons from the current Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, a carbon fiber hood, roof panel and fenders will be worn by the 2014 model year Corvette Stingray. Configured to help deliver close to 50/50 weight distribution, an aluminum frame is hydroformed as the basis for a road and raceway handling package.

Riding on a four-wheel double wishbone suspension system, the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray manners can be adjusted by a Driver Mode Selector knob on the center console. An electronic limited-slip differential, integral brake and a host of cooling enhancements including a dry sump oiling system can be ordered with the 2014 Corvette Stingray’s Z51 Performance Package. Brembo brake components are combined with the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray for total control of the sports car’s momentum. Featuring Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires around 18 or 19-inch wheels, Chevrolet advertises the new Corvette Stingray will achieve 1g of cornering grip.

Detailed prior to the 2014 Corvette’s launch, Chevrolet’s new 6.2 liter LT1 V8 engine can finally be seen in its new habitat under the carbon fiber hood. Producing 450 horsepower and 450 pounds feet of torque, the rear Michelin tires of the new sports car will definitely receive a workout when the accelerator is pressed. In addition to noteworthy performance, the LT1 engine’s latest technology such as variable valve timing, direct injection and Active Fuel Management disciplines gasoline usage for greater mileage per gallon. When EPA fuel economy is announced for the new car, expect it to exceed the current Corvette’s highway range of 26 miles per gallon. A six-speed automatic gearbox will be offered as well as a brand new seven-speed manual transmission. The seven-speed manual includes an Active Rev Matching technology that acclimates engine speed and anticipates shifting for greater performance. In peak trim, the 6.2 liter LT1 V8 equipped Corvette Stingray is predicted to deliver acceleration from 0 to 60 miles per hour in a mere four seconds.

Chevrolet Corvette interior designs had received a fair amount of criticism in previous generations with occasions where cost cutting produced less than world-class accommodations. The seventh-generation Corvette Stingray is most definitely not a compromise to a robust exterior. The two-seat cockpit of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is performance car-worthy with quality leather trim featuring the use of actual aluminum and carbon fiber accents. The interior workmanship combines the latest technology allowing the driver to engage with modern performance motoring. A pair of eight-inch screens makes up the instrument panel as well as the center console display of the 2014 Corvette Stingray. Both displays can be configured to suit the driving or the attitude of the motorist wheeling the Chevrolet sports car.

Debuting in public presence at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, there’s no doubt the high-performance vehicle will be a darling to crowds. The first production examples of the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is slated to roll from the Bowling Green, Kentucky assembly line ahead of the summertime release for sale.

As part of a current automotive trend, even luxury carmakers have been embracing downsized entries for the North American marketplace. Recently dubbing themselves officially as “The Lincoln Motor Company”, Ford Motor Company’s premium vehicle line-up has been holding out for a small car to better introduce buyers to their long-standing but overlooked charm.

The plans for a small Lincoln have been part of the Ford luxury brand’s aspirations since 2010. Originally, it seemed that Lincoln would add a C segment car to their line-up before the end of this year. However, those reports appeared to have been cancelled through last year despite the appearance of the Cadillac ATS and the proposed arrival of the Mercedes-Benz’s B-Class in the United States. At the 2013 North American International Auto Show, it becomes apparent that the small vehicle plans appeared altered rather than abandoned in its entirety. A compact crossover design study (at least for now), the Lincoln MKC Concept is set to show the brand’s luxury on a reduced physical scale.

Lincoln Motor Company recognizes the small luxury crossover class as a quickly expanding market. Executive vice president of Global Marketing, Sales and Service of Lincoln Jim Farley defines the purpose of the MKC Concept by saying. “We are reinventing Lincoln by focusing on the largest and fastest-growing segments of the luxury market, while offering clients something different,”

Proportionate to the Mercedes-Benz GLK and the BMW X1, the Lincoln MKC Concept runs on a 106.9-inch wheelbase. A total length of 179.3 inches, the MKC Concept is indeed a smaller Lincoln compared to the vehicles in the 2013 model line-up. The MKC Concept measures 7.4 inches shorter in overall length than the Lincoln brand’s smaller crossover, the MKX. If a production variant of the MKC Concept was to be created, it could be the smallest Lincoln sold since Ford Motor Company purchased the marque in 1922. The Lincoln MKC Concept is larger than the premium compact Buick Encore crossover.

Despite the compact crossover dimensions, the Lincoln MKC Concept makes the most of the division’s more robust styling DNA. Gaining inspiration from the MKZ use of body contours, the more aggressive front grille, rear vent-style window and the body-sculpted lines towards the tail lamps are the most apparent design cues borrowed for the crossover concept. The Lincoln MKC Concept appears more embellished other production products from the brand when identifying the highly defined hood and the sporty side rocker panels. A set of 20-inch wheel spin on the MKC Concept crafted in a style expressing luxury and performance.

The MKC Concept incorporates a large glass roof that brings natural light into an airy, spacious cabin. Combining colour tones, natural wood and chrome metallic accents, the MKC Concept’s interior produces a premium quality feeling that would put almost any occupant at ease. The Lincoln MKC Concept crossover’s seating layout for four adults presents the additional serenity of premium leather upholstery. Even the cargo area of the Lincoln MKC Concept is given the high-end treatment decked in soft leather. In respect to driving dynamics, gear shifts traditionally done with a lever in the center console is processed through push-button controls on the steering wheel. The shifter controls on the Lincoln MKC Concept crossover revisits ahead-of-its-time technology part of the 1958 Edsel. The Short-lived Ford brand featured a shifting control called Teletouch similar to what is now part of this Lincoln concept vehicle 55 years later.

Existing as a design study presentation for the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, there is yet to be mention of powerplant candidates for the Lincoln MKC Concept. The four-cylinder line of EcoBoost engines seems to be the natural guess.

Though the Lincoln Motor Company primarily sells in North America, globalization plans to expand into the Chinese automotive marketplace by 2015. Still embodying the premium brand’s expression of contemporary luxury motoring, the more downscaled Lincoln MKC Concept would fit nicely into a world-oriented product portfolio.

Past the midway point in the month of December, we enter into two unofficial seasons delivering several surprises. Firstly, Christmas brings the opportunity for friends and family to surprise every other with tokens of generosity. The end of the year is also the time leading into some of the globe’s highest profile auto shows reveal carmakers eager to express their latest corporate philosophies heading into 2013 and beyond.

Ahead of an introduction of a their newest luxury sports sedan at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Nissan’s premium car division Infiniti has rolled out a brand-wide repositioning of their vehicle line-up empathizing the letter “Q“ starting in 2014. For 2014 cars, the “Q” will stand alongside a double-digit number (for example Q50 or Q70) while crossover vehicles will be similarly ranked with a “QX” branding. President of Infiniti Motor Company Limited Johan de Nysschen explained the new effort as a way to simplify their image. “Over the past few months, we have talked at length with our retailers, our customers, and our business partners about our brand. The need for a new identity and direction to promote consumer familiarity with our model range as we expand the portfolio became evident. To achieve this, we clearly needed a simple and consistent nomenclature framework.”, said de Nysschen.

Without doubt, the last time a single name attached to the letter “Q” was when the late Desmond Llewelyn provided gadgets to James Bond over the course of 17 movies. Many astute luxury car owners would notice Infiniti does not have the market cornered on the letter “Q”. Audi has been selling a Q7 crossover vehicle since 2007 in the United States with Q5 and now a smaller Q3 model also available. It appears, in the case of automotive fashion, “Q” is the new “X”.

Despite possessing a purpose to draw a higher income niche with unique, standout vehicles, the luxury car market has evolved to a point where actual model names are no longer welcomed. Slanting towards alphabetic, numeric or a combination to identify their premium products, we have even accepted American luxury brands such as Lincoln and Cadillac abandoning proper names for almost all models. Able to allow luxury car marques to integrate with ease within crucial international markets and transcend languages, German luxury car companies as well as Japanese brands have uncovered the secret of alphanumeric identities for a long time.

In utilizing the “Q” throughout their model line, Infiniti is reconnecting with its roots. In 1989, a four-door luxury vehicle called the Infiniti Q45 gave the United States its first impression of the Japanese idea of sophisticated travel. As Infiniti approaches 25 years of age in 2014, the return of Q could be as pleasing as it was in the James Bond movie Skyfall.

With much of the world busy guessing (and alarmingly betting on) the name of an unborn heir in a royal family, the automotive world braces for its own new additions. First coming at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show and to Detroit early in the new year, 2013 and beyond automobiles will see some brand new personalities emerged with many destined for dealerships. Instead of annoying a young woman and family with furious media attention, there’s considerably less wrong speculating on the yet to be released new products of a company.

Advance news on upcoming vehicles is compiled through a collective effort of automotive media insiders interviewing executives and/or spying on the development procedure of vehicles. Thanks to the trademark registration process in the United States, it is possible to get an idea of what might be in the minds of auto companies. Sometimes trademarks are acquired to preserve a famous, out of production vehicle for other monetary purposes. Ford Motor Company maintains and filed the ‘Thunderbird’ trademark in relations to a variety of merchandise such as collector coins in recent years. More thrilling, trademarked names can identify upcoming street vehicles before they have the covers removed for an official unveiling.

The following is a collection of United States trademarks currently associated with popular auto manufacturers may spoil suspense for what 2013 has in store:

General Motors

Appshop- Is General Motors preparing an endeavour into a new virtual marketplace? Trademarks attaching Appshop to three of General Motors’ four auto division (Cadillac not included) were filed earlier this year. The trademark registration describes the product as both computer software to manage connectivity for downloading software and as an online retail outlet. General Motors recently announced a revised version of MyLink would be equipped on the 2014 Chevrolet Impala but there is no mention of an Appshop or a similar functionality.

Cadillac LTS- Up until about the 1960s, Cadillac was as much a gold standard in global luxury as it was in American luxury. The Cadillac LTS could be future that will help the premier General Motors brand reclaim their spot on the world pedestal. Since introduction of their Sixteen concept car a decade ago, rumblings of Cadillac’s plan for a six-figure vehicle ultra-luxury sedan were apparent. Though the 2013 Cadillac XTS was introduced to market this year, possibilities of a higher tier vehicle continues be the source of speculation. With reports the four-door sedan is confirmed as a future model, we may not have to wait long to find out if Cadillac has a use for the LTS name.

Ford

Mach 1- A well-known accompaniment with the Ford Mustang in past years, the Mach 1 barrier could be broken for a future offering from the auto company. Connected to the Mustang pony car in 1969 to 1978, the name Mach 1 was revived later for a two-year run starting in 2003. The inclusion of the Mach 1 could be involved in ushering forward the next redesigned Ford Mustang. The Mach 1 name has a history for entering production ahead of major restyling.

BMW

BMW 430- Today, BMW announced the concept presentation of the 4 Series as a mid-range sport coupe. However, the ‘BMW 430’ trademark was registered over a year ago. As BMW appears ready to cover single digit numbers Projected by the German company as an evolutionary existence for the automobile, the BMW i division is nearing production scale with their electrified vehicles. In relations to the BMW i sub brand, the full number range from i1 to i9 have been registered.

Chrysler

Chrysler 100- Defining their flagship sedan with the historically anchored ‘300’ badging since 1999, Chrysler placed a spin on their famously used number renaming the mid-sized vehicles as the 200 in the 2011 model year. It seems like inedibility that Chrysler will follow their new numeric system if they wish to add a new vehicle. Perhaps indicating that an entry level Chrysler product is close down the production pipeline, Chrysler 100 has been claimed for possible use. First thoughts would connect the Chrysler 100 with an upscale version of the newly released Dodge Dart.

EcoDiesel 3.0L- As of the 2013 model year, the only diesel vehicle available in the United States under Chrysler Group is a Cummins 6.7 liter turbodiesel in the Ram HD pickup trucks. With a recent trademark, the inclusion of a smaller diesel powerplant could be possible once again in some Chrysler Group vehicles sold in the United States. Registering the EcoDiesel 3.0L badge design, a new diesel engine connected to the branding could be used to power a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee rumoured to be part of the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The powerplant could also be the propulsion for the upcoming Ram ProMaster work van.

Volkswagen

Nanobus and Microbus- Unveiled in 2011, the Volkswagen Bulli concept vehicle presented something exceptionally unique throughout last year’s auto show tour. A small corssover embodying the spirit of the 1960s Microbus, the Bulli concept was overall modern in presentation. Bringing the Bulli concept car to North America on occasions, Volkswagen tested the waters for the prospect sending this vehicle or a similar subcompact crossover into production. According to registered trademarks, Volkswagen has claimed both the Nanobus and Microbus names for use in a vehicle in the United States if market conditions are favourable.

When the new BMW 3-series launched, it didn’t include a new coupe variant. BMW waited for the coupe follow-up, choosing to sell the older generation coupe alongside the new sedan. This time the differentiation between sedan and coupe will be bigger than ever before, and the result is the 4-Series Coupe.

For a while now, it has been rumored that BMW would be repositioning the coupe model of the 3-series, giving it the 4-series designation. This move would put all of BMWs coupe and convertible models on an even-numbered nomenclature. We weren’t sure it would happen given all of the name-recognition the car has built up wearing the 3-series label.

But, BMW wanted to make a statement about positioning the car as its own model and make a statement it has. The new 4-series is here (at least in concept form) and whether you like the name change or not, most agree the design is stunning. An increased level of differentiation in styling began with the previous generation 3-series coupe and has reached a new “zenith” (those are BMW’s words!) with the 4-series. The changes start with the front end. The most criticized design element of the 3-series sedan is the way the front headlights join with the grille.

The idea could have been executed better and BMW has done that with the 4-series. The headlights have been redesigned and feature an LED light-pipe element that meets up with the grille. It gives a much more completed look to the front-end and we hope that the changes make their way to mid-cycle enhancement of the 3-Series sedan. The 4-Series has beautiful proportions from front to rear. To our eyes it beats its German rivals, at least in concept form. The rear features a rakish roofline and taillights inspired by the 6-series. Overall, it is one of the most stylized BMW designs we have seen. As far as powertrains go, expect the same setup as the standard 3-series sedan. The 4-series concept is an early reveal from next month’s North American International Auto Show. We’re looking forward to seeing live photos of this car on the show floor.

For the past several months around the Detroit area, automotive paparazzi have been a little anxious to capture an image of General Motor’s latest mechanical celebrity. The seventh-generation Chevrolet Corvette (known popularly as the ‘C7′) has the entire car world waiting in anticipation for its pending debut. Undercover and incognito, peaks at a masked Corvette C7 have given some of us less patient automobile enthusiasts a reason to wet appetites. Like so many Christmas gifts resting under trees during the upcoming holiday season, so many want to unwrap the 2014 model year Chevrolet Corvette ahead of its auto show premiere. Setting January 13th 2013 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit as the official launch of the 50-year old performance icon, General Motors will leave us waiting a little under two months to be fully indulged to the full new Corvette.

The most sought after details Corvette lovers are longing to realize is the interior and exterior design of the C7 model. Will the Chevrolet Corvette C7 styling be more retro or forward thinking? While the overall shaping is expected to purely speak Corvette, specific aesthetic touches can skew. Will we see the split-rear window return as suggested by some including the Corvette Stingray Concept vehicle? Remembering the release of the Corvette C6 design, some fans of the American were broken up emotionally to see exposed headlamps replacing the pop-up headlights that became a design tradition (though a wildly inefficient one).

However important it is for the C7 model of the Chevrolet Corvette to appeal to us at a standstill, the new sports car’s divine new shape will be crafted for maximum performance. Tadge Juechter, the chief engineer for the Corvette C7 stated that 2014 car is actually absorbing traits discovered through the Corvette Racing program.“For example, the front grill and radiator flow paths reduce lift, improving vehicle stability at high speeds by keeping the car pressed to the pavement. In addition, functional vents increase track capability by channeling air to the brakes, as well as heat exchangers for the transmission and differential.” said Juechter. Dedicating a high degree of time configuring the new Corvette in a manner where results can only be seen in wind tunnel data. Exterior design manager Kirk Bennion teases that the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette outer skin will be a case where, “form and function work cohesively to produce beautiful purpose.”. “Its sculpted design excites in all the ways that a Corvette has for six decades, with elements carefully shaped in the wind tunnel to increase airflow potential and improve cooling for a system that is as efficient as possible,” said Bennion.

A Chevrolet way too cool to wear the mere ‘bowtie’ badge, the Corvette C7 will feature a revised emblem for the 2014 model year. The “Crossed Flag” logo used to uniquely identify the Chevrolet Corvette is sharpened. Projecting more defined colouring framed by some eye-catching chrome, the 2014 Corvette emblem’s more swept, longer look. Besides being part of the street car, the new Corvette insignia will be part of the Corvette Racing sports car competition program. The Chevrolet Corvette C7R will officially be part of North America sports car racing during the 2014 season.

Reported through the media grapevine earlier this year, there was mention that the next generation Corvette would feature lower displacement engines than the V8 powerplants. The American-built sports car’s more recent iterations such as the 427 Edition is thought to be the last big engine we’ll see the Corvette entering into the 2014 model year. For some hardcore Chevrolet Corvette fans afraid those words meant some kind of turbocharged six-cylinder engine propelling an all-wheel drive potential blasphemy, take stock in knowing the seventh-generation Corvette will return with some familiar eight-cylinder muscle.

Defined as the LT1 engine, the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette’s 6.2 liter V8 will be the first of an all-new line of Small Block powerplants produced under Gen 5 architecture. For the 2014 Corvette, 450 horsepower and 450 pounds feet of torque will be on tap on the base model. Laden with high-tech control and management systems, the brand new LT1 engine is the first time several items will be found in Chevrolet performance athlete. Direct injection, Active Fuel Management and continuously variable valve timing will be important components contributing to a projected 26 mile per gallon highway fuel economy with the new Corvette. The C7 model Chevrolet Corvette’s LT1 engine will also be a cleaner machine that will produce roughly 25 percent fewer hydrocarbons at cold-start.

While the information presented is only a collection of small new releases and speculation, the seventh-generation Chevrolet Corvette can be defined by some core elements already. Besides creating a leaner and meaner edition of the Chevrolet Corvette to match wits with the Porsche 911, Audi R8 or other likely adversaries in the sports car world, the technology used to explore the zenith of performance also plays into making the 2014 model year car evermore relevant.

Existing as a “Long time, no see!” production promise from General Motors’ luxury-oriented Cadillac brand, the ELR was given the green light August of last year on the premise of becoming the brand’s first plug-in hybrid car (or extended range electric vehicle).

Based on the Converj concept car that debuted at the 2009 North American International Auto Show, the ELR is set to merge Chevrolet Volt’s advanced powertrain technology with very Cadillac-chic two-door coupe exterior style. While Cadillac’s recent corporate focus has been centered on the effective launches of the entry-level ATS and their new flagship XTS sedan, details of the upcoming ELR was mute for a long time. On Tuesday, the first words regarding the Cadillac ELR was offered to reassure us the vehicle is indeed heading into production.

An anti-climatic announcement, General Motors stated the upcoming Cadillac ELR would be produced in the General Motors’ Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant. A smart move in terms of logistics, the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant is the same manufacturing facility producing the Chevrolet Volt as well as the international equivalents to the plug-in hybrid sedan (Holden Volt and the Opel Ampera). By building the new ELR in the same plant, advanced powertrain technology stock such as the lithium-ion battery (produced in a nearby facility in Brownstown, Michigan) are within easy reach.

With the Chevrolet Volt serving as the champion for radical driving technology not only for General Motors but the whole auto industry in a major extent, the vehicle generated some mixed indicators for the reception of future plug-in hybrid products. Immediately having to overcome a price tag over $40,000 before government tax credits, that one challenge continues to dog the Chevy Volt more than the 40-mile maximum electric-only cruising range. The Cadillac ELR coupe should be better able to warrant a high price tag on brand prominence alone. Besides pricing, the Volt’s 2012 year started with the very public recall due to a potential electrical fire risk. Issuing the vehicle’s first recall to reinforce the battery, some of the top vehicle honours the Chevrolet Volt won with its launch was put into question. Most important for the plug-in hybrid sedan, the Volt does not seem to be too greatly impacted by the recall. Selling over 16,000 Chevrolet Volts at the end of September, the plug-in hybrid is on track to reach the 20,000 sales plateau when 2012 closes.

While the Chevrolet Volt was marketed heavily as a future for General Motors too important to fail when bankruptcy restructuring plagued the company in 2009, the Cadillac ELR will could also be held to the same scrutiny when it goes on sale in late 2013. The first production vehicle to use electric power with a range-extending gasoline engine not to be the familiar sedan, the premium two-door vehicle will have the task of accommodating an unusual demographic; an eco-minded car market operating on luxury tastes.

The acceptance of the Cadillac ELR will go a long way to demonstrate the production viability of General Motors’ advanced powertrain as a platform to a series of vehicles. If successful, this could be GM’s plug-in hybrid technology could become like Toyota’s Synergy Drive hybrid vehicle line. Proliferation of the Chevy Volt-derived electrified powerplant across a wider line-up of vehicles will also go a long way to reducing the production cost of the technology.

2012 marks the 15th year since the Toyota Prius began its effort to champion the future of motoring. A unique automotive legend would start in late 1997 as the concept of an electric motor supporting a gasoline engine entered production for the Japanese marketplace. Premiering in a very niche market of gasoline-electric vehicles that did not exist, Toyota brought the Prius to North American in 2001. After long attempting the attract a market, the market came to the Toyota Prius when rising fuel prices and the culture of environmentalism erupted in the United States. With other Toyota and Lexus products incorporating the same powertrain configuration trademarked as Hybrid Synergy Drive, a series of milestones (including the 3-millionth Toyota hybrid vehicle produced last year) has earned unparallel praise for the Prius. At the 2011 North American International Auto Show, Toyota’s spot to expand the Prius to a new family of vehicles represented a moment that firmly sent a message to those who opposed gasoline-electric hybrid motoring.

Debuting in production form at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the subcompact Toyota Prius c is launching this year as a hybrid for the younger, first-time new car buyer. Promising average fuel economy of 50 miles per gallon, the Prius c will be the most efficient vehicle sold in the United States powered primarily by gasoline. Set to provide a generous standard equipment vehicle featuring automatic climate control, vehicle stability control, Smart Stop Technology and Bluetooth hands-free with every 2012 Prius c, Toyota has announced pricing for the new economy car will start just under $19,000.

Arriving to showrooms in four trim levels (One, Two, Three and Four), the 2012 Toyota Prius c One will cost a thrifty $18,950. As the basic model, the Prius One offers remote keyless entry and a tilt-telescoping steering column. For an extra $950, buyers of the Toyota Prius c can upgrade to the Two trim level. A six-speaker stereo, cargo tonneau cover and cruise control are highlight features for the Prius c Two that is priced just below $20,000 less taxes, delivery and other dealership costs. At a $21,635 price point, the 2012 Prius c progresses with a standard stash of electronic goodies under the Three trim level. HD Radio, Sirius XM Satellite Radio and Toyota’s Entune system featuring a 6.1-inch touchscreen is key features for the Prius c Three. At the highest end of the trim scale, the Toyota Prius c Four comes with all of the top features from the previous trim level but also adds heated front seats and heated mirror with turn signals. The 2012 Toyota Prius c Four will be well equipped for $23,230 with options such as moonroof and 16-inch wheels.

Since its debut, the Toyota Prius has begun throwing cold water on sceptics of the advanced gasoline-electric vehicles. Disputing many aspects of hybrid vehicles, one of the main critical points regarded the technology’s cost-effectiveness. Since the Toyota Prius was a hybrid-only offering, other cars such as the Toyota Camry and Honda Civic showed hybrid powertrains have resulted in a several thousand-dollar price premium over conventional gasoline-only vehicles. With many analysts doing the math early on hybrid vehicles, it was believed that many owners of electric-assisted cars would never experience enough savings in fuel to warrant spending extra for the hybrid electric hardware. Thanks to Toyota’s environmentally friendly work with hybrid powertrains, the business case for electric assistance in motoring has become an economical choice. While the Toyota Prius c will not be the cheapest hybrid car available (the 2012 Honda Insight retails at $18,350), the 50-mile per gallon economy hatchback will be in position to influence even entry-level car buyers.

When the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf premiered on the auto show circuit, crowds once surrounding these electrified vehicles as marvels of engineering were later repelled by near obscene vehicle prices. The release of the 2012 Toyota Prius c will be a welcomed change in perception for electric-assisted vehicles.

As one of the most important auto shows of the year takes place in Detroit, the need for brands to create a meaningful impression on the forward-thinking automotive market is paramount. For at least one company, their work in acquainting customers to once advanced producted started a week earlier. Prior to showcasing this year’s automotive innovations, General Motors brand Chevrolet had issued an important remedy the 2011 North American International Auto Show‘s Car of the Year, the Chevrolet Volt.

Currently the only plug-in hybrid vehicle in the United States marketplace, the Chevrolet Volt was put under investigation last year by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in regards to a battery fire risk. Originating from a fire at the vehicle holding area of the NHTSA, the cause was linked to a Chevrolet Volt that was administered a side-impact pole test weeks before. It was assessed that a coolant link caused by a broken line led to the overheating and sparking o lithium-ion battery pack. In November of 2011, the NHTSA announced they had recreated the fire under lab conditions using the identical perimeters that caused the June fire.

Just in time to save General Motors’ corporate assembly in Detroit some headaches of having to answer repeated questions on the Chevrolet Volt’s post-crash fire risk, the company’s engineering team provided a multi-prong fix for the car. The first solution is to construct a more comprehensive structural assembly around the Volt’s battery pack. Second and third modifications strengthening the Volt plug-in hybrid focuses on the battery’s cooling system. A new sensor will be added to the battery cooling supply to monitor fluid levels. Finally, a temper-resistant bracket is added to the battery coolant reservoir of the Chevrolet Volt protecting against the potential of coolant fluid overfill.

Quick to resolve the problem, the new modifications to Volt’s electrical powertrain hardware has already been tested. Four Chevrolet Volts featuring the enhanced crash protection were crash tested through the month of December. With no coolant leak or fires erupting from the collision aftermath, General Motors is confident they have successfully resolved the issue.

Chevrolet Volt owners will be notified individually about the new safety enhancements available for their vehicle in the coming weeks. Since late November, Volt owners were offered use of a ‘loaner’ car if they felt unsafe driving their plug-in hybrid.

In 2007, General Motors shocked automotive journalists and enthusiasts with a perspective of plug-in hybrid driving through debut of the Chevrolet Volt Concept at the North American International Auto Show. Shortly after the conceptual design made headlines in many publications of that time, a production version of the Chevrolet Volt becoming the world’s first plug-in electric/gasoline plug-in hybrid from a major automaker. Spending what seemed to be an eternity on the car show circuit, the Chevrolet Volt’s debut came with the accolades including the 2011 Car of the Year at the North American International Auto Show.

Enduring the Chevrolet Volt’s first challenge as the vehicle launches into wide release throughout the United States and Canada this year, the fire concern has much to do about the continuing learning process behind advanced powertrains entering production cars. As new players like the 2013 Ford Fusion Energi and the Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid approaches the marketplace in the next 12 months, the Volt will count on its head-start from the showroom as an advantage.

Debuting the New Beetle concept at the North American International Auto Show back in 1994, Volkswagen either has a special place in its corporate heart for Detroit or realizes the automotive exhibit is the location to show up the leading American automakers. With intrigue building for what automakers had in store for the auto show, Volkswagen entered with a certain degree of stealth. Without drawing too much attention or tempting to auto press with tidbits of information, the German-badged car company presented a product important to compete with the current North American family sedan market. Only Volkswagen’s second production hybrid vehicle, the 2013 Jetta will feature an electric-assisted model.

Drawing down their price for the sixth-generation model, the Volkswagen Jetta sedan succeeded to capture a larger piece of the four-door vehicle segment in 2011. In association with value, space, equipment and safety, a modern sedan sold in the United States appears to require a hybrid variation. The 2012 Toyota Camry and Kia Optima come with hybrid options while the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco will receive the ‘mild hybrid’ equipment categorized as eAssist technology. Unveiled at the very same 2012 North American International Auto Show, the 2013 Ford Fusion elevated the bar in electric-assisted motoring providing both a common hybrid as well as the Energi plug-in hybrid. The Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid sedan will give the German auto company a chance to more deeply embed themselves with the American automotive culture.

Though the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid is assembled within the same four-door frame as the convention Jetta, the gasoline/electric powertrain running at slow speeds will give the first defining clue to some drastic mechanical technology. Making the Jetta Hybrid coast at slower speeds will be the electric motor power coming from a 60-cell lithium-ion battery holding a total capacity of 300Ah. Gasoline propulsion will come from the smallest such engine to be made available on the new Jetta. Sold in Europe on a convention gasoline version of the Volkswagen sedan, the Jetta Hybrid will receive the award-winning 1.4 liter TSI powerplant. Together, the electric motor and turbocharged motor are handled through a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox. Despite the high-tech hardware, the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid is slated to weigh around 220 pounds more than a traditional Jetta model.

For speeds up to 37 miles per hour, the Volkswagen Jetta launches on electric only power for a distance up to 1.3 miles. Automatically configured for the all-electric travel, a driver can decouple the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid’s gasoline engine for additional zero emission power up to 44 miles per hour by pressing the E-mode button on the vehicle’s dash panel. Capable of 0 to 60 miles per hour acceleration runs in under 9 seconds, the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid is also engineered to save fuel at highway speeds. For speeds up to 84 miles per hour, the Jetta Hybrid will detect when the accelerator pedal has been disengaged. Once detected, the TSI engine will be disconnected via the decoupling clutch allowing the sedan to truly coast.

Volkswagen has admitted the final fuel economy numbers for the Jetta Hybrid will need to be verified by the EPA. Estimates from the auto manufacturer places the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid fuel miles at 45 miles per gallon through combined city and highway driving.

The occupants inside of the Jetta Hybrid will comfortably accept the same level of comfort and features in this sedan as they would in the gasoline or Jetta TDI model. Along with the planning to generating, storing and releasing the electrical energy, the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid incorporates safety built into their advanced powertrain. The climate-controlled lithium-ion battery pack operates on systems that are designed to disconnect the electrical storage in non-use or in case of an accident. Automakers are quickly learning the need to develop safety technology inclined with the needs of electric vehicles.

If awaiting the arrival of the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid in the United States and Canada, the first cars will be delivered to customers by November of 2012. Interesting enough, the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid appears only planned for the North American market for the immediate future. With no considerations for the European markets such as the United Kingdom, Volkswagen will continue to rely on that region’s preference to diesel engines the net near identical fuel mileage.

This year’s North American International Auto Show is in full swing, and it is one of the best auto shows we’ve seen in a long time. So many debuts are going on, pivotal new vehicles for their manufacturers. And you know what else?

There has been very few leaks ahead of time – making it even more exciting. This morning Chevrolet has debuted two new concepts aimed squarely at the youth market. They are the Code 130R and Tru 140S, each aimed at offering enthusiasts an small, engaging performance offering. They are designed to compete with cars like the new Scion FR-S and each has an entirely different approaches in doing that. We’ll start with the 130R.

The 130R is a rear-wheel drive offering, which makes us excited. It is powered by a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder working in concert with an eAssist mild hybrid system. The setup makes 150 horsepower and 148 pound feet of torque. Given its weight, that wouldn’t provide bad performance. Stylistically, the 130R has retro proportions, with an upright design and aggressive front end.

It somehow manages to be a bit throwback. Anyhow, we love it – and more than the styling, just the concept and confidence behind it. Underneath the car could be a mainstream version of the Alpha platform that underpins the Cadillac ATS – General Motors isn’t saying anything about that though. Inexpensive, rear-wheel drive and fun – we like the sounds of that!

The 140S is very modern in its styling, with a low-slung, cab forward design that is somewhat like the most recent Mitsubishi Eclipse. Better though, definitely better. The 140S has muscular lines, and elongated doors.

It is very dramatic, and the 140S seems to be the styling favorite of the two concepts. Funnily enough, underneath the 140S is based on the Delta platform underpinning the Cruze. This is the Cruze coupe everyone has been wanting – and its a whole lot better than Cruze sans two-doors. We’re glad to see Chevrolet making an effort, and we could really see this car doing well if it is produced.

Remember what we said about same targets, different approaches? Well the 140S has the same engine setup, making 10 more hp. In addition, it would be priced at the same point – about $25,000 – if produced.

We think they need to pull the trigger with both of them, but if one is more likely to get the green light it would have to be the 140S. No doubt about it, Chevy is back folks. These concepts are proof the brand is reaching out to enthusiasts and the youth market with new models. Green light! Check them both out in our gallery below and decide which one is your favorite.

After the magnificent display that was the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, I wrote an article on the notion that the California coast was the place automakers preferred to display their latest creations and concepts. Wondering if the 2012 auto show in Detroit would be have the same amount of enthusiasm, the sensory overload-inducing debuts set to occur at this week’s opening of the North American International Auto Show leads me to concludes thoughts of the Motor City becoming less of an industry focal point seems a waste of mental energy. The biggest auto manufacturers of the United States, Japan, Europe and even India are expected to provide an automotive delight.

Ahead of major auto shows, the marketing departments of carmakers are challenged to entice interest in a vehicle debut without giving too much away from the physical spectacle. Leading into the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, various tactics are being rolled out by auto brands. Whether they want to unveil the entire full image of the vehicle or a mere teaser photo, the auto companies are careful in their attempts to grab the attention of media and the overall car-adoring public.

For the 2012 edition of the North American International Auto Show, the following is a few of the production-based 2013 model year vehicles making a world debut:

Toyota Prius c

The smallest member of the now established Prius hybrid family, Toyota plans to capitalize on the high efficiency small car market with what will become North America’s first subcompact gasoline-electric vehicle. Roughly 5 inches longer than the 2012 Yaris, the Toyota Prius c liftback body style is a careful execution of small car values with high technology.

Beyond the Toyota Synergy Drive powertrain technology, the interior of the Prius c will incorporate an array of infotainment solutions thoughtful to the youth market the Japanese-based automaker wants to attract. With Bluetooth standard, optional equipment to be offered on the Toyota Prius c includes Toyota Entune multimedia system. Through Toyota Entune, occupants of the Prius c are given access to traffic and weather updates as well as Pandora Internet radio.

Two vital unknowns remain with the pending introduction at the 2012 auto show. Firstly, what will be the fuel economy expectations from the Toyota Prius c hybrid powertrain? Toyota has indicated a city range of more than 50 miles per gallon is estimated for the smallest Prius. Secondly, when the Prius c reaches showrooms, what can the younger generation of Toyota buyers expect to buy for the subcompact? If placed around the $20,000 range (in between the Yaris and common Prius hybrid), the Toyota Prius c could be a major spoiler to the eco-car marketplace.

Cadillac ATS

No longer the 1950s and 1960s when Cadillac’s hulking convertibles defined American luxury, it’s become the objective of the division in the 21st century to redefine its image among the top premium cars. While not hitting a home run with every new product, Cadillac has cemented a reputation for featuring solid luxury and effective technology on smaller vehicles. Applying their lessons to what will be their smallest production vehicle since the disastrous Cimarron of the 1980s, the 2013 Cadillac ATS will be the General Motors division latest test in the modern luxury car marketplace.

The Cadillac ATS has expected to be the most vibrant display of compact vehicle refinement of their new car line-up at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Through the teaser image, we can expect to see the 2013 Cadillac ATS to resemble its bigger brother CTS sedan. One of the more compelling characteristics of the compact car is the use of an all-new rear wheel drive platform. Specifically aiming at the BMW 3-Series and the Mercedes-Benz C Class, the Cadillac ATS sedan will have a strong assortment of engine power to support what should be a fierce luxury car battle. To offer three powerplant choices, the 2013 ATS will offer a 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engine, the 3.6 liter V-6 already found on Cadillac products and a new 270-horsepower, turbocharged 2-liter engine to debut in the vehicle.

The 2013 Cadillac ATS will also feature available Magnetic Ride Control suspension and the brand’s latest CUE in-car infotainment system.

Ford Fusion

The third-highest selling vehicle in the Ford Motor Company behind the Ford F-150 and the Ford Escape, the Fusion exists in the narrow but important market segment of mid-sized family sedans.

Kept under a great deal of secrecy by the auto company, there has not even been as much as a teaser shot ushered out for the 2013 Ford Fusion. Unsure of how radical or tame the 2013 Fusion styling will be on the four-door sedan, observers at the unveiling should expect Ford to advertise the new vehicle’s improved fuel economy and technology. Judging from the discontinuation of the Escape hybrid with the 2013 model year vehicle, a hybrid version of the new Ford Fusion might not be a guarantee. What should be certain with the 2013 Fusion’s powertrain is the inclusion of an EcoBoost engine (likely the 2-liter, four-cylinder powerplant). Based on the competition in the vehicle category, expect the all-wheel drive option to return as a substitute to standard front-wheel power. New technology expected on the upcoming Ford Fusion’s interior is an available Lane Keeping System and the revised version of MyFord Touch.

Ahead of the 2012 North American International Auto Show debut, Ford provided potential customers a chance to interact with the 2013 model year sedan through a unique mobile app. Available free for Apple iPhone and Android devices at fordfusionapp.com, the app supplies an experience with 19 unlockable driving courses through augmented reality. When the 2013 Ford Fusion is presented on January 10th, users of the Ford Fusion mobile app will be able to witness full images of the new car.

Dodge Dart

With close automobile rivals Chevrolet and Ford staking claims to the subcompact car category, Chrysler Corporation’s Dodge division stood on the sidelines unable to compete. Though many automotive photographers were able to snap spy shots of a proposed small car based on the Dodge Hornet concept for years, corporate restructuring of the auto company has tightened resources for new car debuts. Reactivating a long-running Dodge nameplate, the Chrysler Group’s subcompact 2013 Dart will be targeting the growing entry-level car segment.

Teasing automotive enthusiasts with the same successful spoon-feeding of images that welcomed the 2011 Dodge Durango’s return, only a front corner and interior panel shot defines the 2013 Dodge Dart leading into this year‘s North American International Auto Show. The first all-new product created for the North American market by Chrysler through its 2009 collaboration with Fiat Group, the 2013 Dodge Dart rests on the same compact platform as the Alfa Romeo Giulietta. While the Giulietta is a hatchback, the 2013 Dodge Dart making its debut in Detroit will be a more Americanized four-door sedan shape. Conforming to the Dodge brand identity, the Dart will be aggressively styled with touches found on the new Dodge Charger. Mechanicals for the 2013 Dodge Dart is likely to include a 1.4 liter and 2-liter engine with an available 9-speed automatic transmission.

The smallest vehicle in a brand line-up, the 2013 Dodge Dart will perhaps face the fiercest fight in the modern car industry. Ford Fiesta, Chevy Sonic, Hyundai Accent and Toyota Yaris have either new or redesigned products each providing competitive powertrains, standard equipment and fuel economy.

Nissan Pathfinder Concept

Nissan’s most enduring SUV (sport utility vehicle) brand, the Pathfinder lived up to its name since debuting in 1986. In constant production since introduction, the Nissan Pathfinder’s ability to connect with the North American consumer led the Japan-derived brand to share the Pathfinder name briefly with the large Amanda SUV. Rolling out at the 2012 North American International Auto Show as a concept vehicle, the exterior design for Nissan’s latest generation of the Pathfinder should remain close to the production model set for release later this year.

A four-wheel drive set to offer seating for seven passengers, the Nissan Pathfinder Concept will feature a refreshed exterior design. A more aerodynamic look than the predecessor model, the teaser photo of the Pathfinder Concept unveils a roof similar to the Nissan Quest minivan and body panels featuring aggressive flaring like the Juke. Buyers of the next generation Nissan Pathfinder should feel confident that the powerplant options should consist of the VQ series six-cylinder and the VK series eight-cylinder engine.

Users of Facebook will be some of the first observers to see the Nissan Pathfinder Concept. After 8:30am on Monday, Facebook users who log into the Nissan page will be able to view the new vehicle after clicking on the “Pathfinder Reveal” tab.
