Rolls-Royce Pininfarina Hyperion

hyperion.jpg

Named after Hyperion, one of the Titans of Greek mythology, this one-off creation of Pininfarina was built at the request of Roland Hall. He apparently decided that his Rolls-Royce Drophead Coupe wasn’t so special anymore, so he commissioned the good folks at Pininfarina to make his Roller look more fly than his neighbors’. The result: the interesting (odd?) creation you see here.

One thing of note: Andrea Pininfarina, CEO of Pininfarina S.p.A., died while the car was being made. Roland Hall has decided to dedicate the car to his memory.

According to the press release, Pininfarina’s inspiration came from the classic luxury cars of the 1930’s. They wanted to emulate those classic proportions on the Hyperion— hence the long, surging hood, the smooth, fluid sides, and the classic two-seat grand tourer configuration. To accomplish this, Pininfarina made a rather big change to the interior of the original Rolls, because remember: though the Drophead is a coupe, it still has four seats. Pininfarina removed the rear seats, moved the cabin about 16 inches back, and then proceeded to remodel to whole exterior of the car: Continue Reading…

Ferrari P4/5 Enzo by Pininfarina - Video

Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina

James Glickenhaus, the owner of the wildly popular P4/5 (a modified Enzo,) talks about his $5 million supercar created just for him by Pininfarina. The video shows some nice shots of the car, him explaining the process of creating the car, as well as James driving it on the street.

James purchased the last unsold Enzo from Ferrari and immediately took it to Pininfarina to recreate a modern version of Ferrari’s P3/4, one of which Mr. Glickenhaus also owns. On top of the $1 million price of the Enzo, James reportedly paid $4 million for the redesign. A small price to pay for such exclusivity, one might say.

Jaguar XJ220 Pininfarina

Did James Glickenhaus’ re-bodied Enzo (the Ferrari P4/5) not do it for you? It seems the Sultan of Brunei and his brother Prince Jefri were obsessive about their supercars. With a collection much more impressive than Jay Leno’s, they went nuts in the mid-90’s, secretly buying hundreds of supercars and having them custom appointed by the best. In the case of this recently discovered 1995 Jaguar XJ220, they had Pininfarina redesign the body and interior.

Jaguar XJ220 Pininfarina

Noticeably better looking (in my opinion,) but it looks a bit like a smoothed-out Acura NSX (not that there’s anything wrong with that, of course.) You’ll notice the fixed headlights which replace the ugly pop-up lights help give the car a more aggressive stance. On a side note, I think all pop-up headlights should be abolished and replaced with the fixed beams. They look terrible when deployed, and destroy and good looks the car may have had when they were down, not to mention kill the aerodynamics.

Giving this car company in the Sultan’s garage were apparently two McLaren F1 LM’s, four astonishingly rare Ferrari FX’s, and fifteen (yes, that’s 15) other XJ220’s. Oh yeah, and that was just one of his garages. At least he had good taste. I should make an “envy” category for these types of posts.
