Fourth of July Special: Cars That Make Me Proud To Be An American

american-1.jpg

Happy Fourth of July to all you car buffs out there!

Since the Fourth of July is a celebration of America and all things American (except maybe gas prices), I’ve put together this little Fourth of July Special, an article dedicated to all American cars. I actually got the idea from Car and Driver, and you can see their article here. Anyway, this is compromised of what I believe are the current finest examples of the American automobile. Not all are in production, but those that aren’t will be. I chose these cars because they herald the new “era” of the Big Three, , who are just beginning to make cars that you actually want. So if you’re a car buff and you love your country, this might just make you proud to be an American again, and just in time for the Fourth of July. And if you aren’t American, these cars might just make you wish you were.

You might not agree with all the choices, and if there is a car you disagree with or if there is one you think should be on the list, any and all comments are welcome. Keep in mind that this is just my opinion of cars that have that good ol’ American feel— and make me proud to be an American. Continue Reading…

C/D on “Future” Mustangs

Ford Mustang II II

Car & Driver (C/D) can still, on occasion, actually write something worthwhile and worth reading … and also be quite funny in the process.

In this case they’ve been wondering out loud about “Five Future Mustangs We’d Like to See”.

It’s all pretty funny satirical stuff, one that will strike a lot of notes with people like me who have seen one too many Special Editions (where the main thing that’s special is that sticker on the side that says “Special Edition”).

The one that I really noticed was the Ford Mustang II II.

Anyone who was around when they put out the Mustang II back in the 70s will cringe just from reflex action alone.

What an abomination … it was a car that somehow combined numerous, yet disparate bad qualities.

They we cramped inside and small overall, yet they weighed way more than they should. The chassis was notoriously flexible and ill-handling, AND it rode like it was stiffly sprung. They were available with V8s (the utterly loathsome Cobra II package), but weren’t fast enough to get out of their own way.

Worst off all, when it came celebrity product placement, who did Ford use to push the car?

Jill Munroe, Farrah Fawcett’s character in “Charlie’s Angels”.

Anyway, go read the article, it’s worth your time:

Ford Launches 2009 “Warriors in Pink” Mustang for Breast Cancer

2009 Ford Warriors in Pink Mustang

Due to the success of the 2008 “Warriors in Pink” Mustang, Ford announced today that it will be doubling their contribution to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation - now $500 for each car sold. They will be produced in limited numbers - 1,000 units total for this year, available at your local Ford dealer this summer.

2009 Ford "Warriors in Pink" Mustang badgeThe Warriors in Pink Edition will be available on the Mustang V6 Coupe and Convertible models. The updates include a unique grille, a pink ribbon fender badge, pink side rocker tape striping, charcoal leather seats with pink stitching, a steering wheel with pink stitching, and charcoal floormats with pink ribbon. The exterior colors available will black, silver and white, all of course with the pink stripes down the center and sides.

All-in-all it’s a great idea for a great cause, but don’t expect too many men on the lots looking for pink stripes all over their Mustangs.

2008 Shelby GT500KR, with how much HP??

GT500KR

OK, Detroit Auto Show, Detroit Auto Show, Detroit Auto Show … let’s see, what do we got this year … something called an A-Bat, a whole bunch of hybrid this & that, SUVs renamed something-or-other-Vs, a whole bunch of Chinese cars with safety “standards” that will give Nader fits, the roll out of the 2008 Shelby GT500KR, huh, wonder what that’s all about?

Let’s take a look at the stats … SVT-engineered 5.4-liter supercharged V-8, limited to 1,000 copies, 50% stiffer chassis, revised suspension, better aero, Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual transmission and 3.73:1 rear axle ratio, 540-hp and torque to 510 ft.-lbs …

Fiver hundred and forty?!

Son-of-a- … this thing must go like all get out!

And hey look, they’re even putting it out on ‘Ol Shel’d birthday … pretty cool, huh?

Only thing that could be cooler is if they put this drive train into the Bullitt package, but why get ahead of ourselves?

The New Bullitt, Better Then Frank’s Original Ride

2008 Ford Mustang Bullitt

As one would expect, Ford is making a Bullitt version of its current iteration of the venerable Mustang.

As an adopted San Franciscan, I feel that it is incumbent upon me to let you know and discuss this with you.

For those of you that don’t know, Bullitt, was a movie produced in 1968 and starred the late, and occasionally great, Steve McQueen as a hard-nosed, straight shooting San Francisco cop by the name of Frank Bullitt (pretty macho name, huh?) who gets involved in a murder case and departmental corruption.

Overall, it’s a pretty good police yarn, and The City, as always, comes off as cool and beautiful as it is in real life.

But the real set piece, the bit of the movie that everyone remembers, is the chase scene: Continue Reading…
