Ford has been doing a lot of factory approved drag racing recently. They’ve been selling lots of “for the strip only” cars, and now it looks like veteran Ford guy, and NASCAR super-team owner Jack Roush is getting into the act, and, surprisingly, getting in a rather green way.

Roush does more than just NASCAR and the occasional drag car though. He is involved in a wide variety of auto-related ventures, most of them seemingly involved in the building of very quick Ford powered vehicles. His Roush Engineering business, for example, does a lot of prototype build and development work for a number of different client companies. And most recently Roush Engineering has been working on, and building propane-fueled conversions of Ford F-150 pickup trucks that are especially useful to fleet customers.

So why not dive into making propane-fueled drag cars, huh?

More good news from Ford, their current gen Mustang is as safe as a car can get. At least that’s according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, who just awarded the Mustang a five out of five star safety rating. I don’t know why this struck me as being surprising, but when I thought more about it, there’s no reason for it not to be a safe car.

OK, scoops out on the 2010 Shelby Mustang (officially dubbed the Ford Shelby GT500), and it looks even better than the ’09s. There’s more power, and, get this, better mileage. Sure, we all want better gas mileage, but what Ford is touting is kind of comical. Still looks like a pretty damn good ride.

Ford released new information and images of the 2010 Ford Shelby GT500 to be debuted at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. Whether you like the new design of the 2010 Mustang or not, there’s no denying that it’s been seriously upgraded. The new Shelby GT500 takes this to the extreme.

The 2010 version of this snake’s 5.4-liter supercharged V8 gets a 40 horsepower increase from its predecessor, now up to 540 HP. Torque is also increased to 510 lb-ft, and it gets a new gearbox to handle the extra power, provide faster acceleration, and better fuel economy. Exterior changes are functional - a new hood extractor removes heat from the engine, and a Gurney Flap spoiler tunes rear downforce.

Helping the engine produce that extra power is an open-element cold-air induction system with a new conical air filter. A new, larger twin-disc clutch helps to increase drivability. Chassis tuning and a tighter suspension help with improved handling. Continue Reading…

2010 Ford Mustang

The newly redesigned 2010 Mustang will be shown on the TV show “Knight Rider” tomorrow at 8 PM Eastern, coinciding with the LA Auto Show. Currently, the Shelby GT500KR is the new version of KITT, which sparked quite a bit of (understandable) bitching from long-term Knight Rider fans.

But don’t worry, the new show is terrible. I gave it a chance on the first episode and couldn’t make it through the whole thing.
