Still regarded as a builder of mechanically sound and liveable vehicles, Honda is being affected by the same pattern that Ford Motor Company encountered in the late 1920s with the Model T. An automobile must project a distinct character in order to be noticed in an active marketplace. While underwhelming in the styling department, the 2012 Honda CR-V crossover utility vehicle will have to benefit of a slick TV commercial officially making its debut during the 2012 Super Bowl.

One of the most coveted television advertising spots of the year, the championship game of the National Football League has only grown as marketing venue for major companies. With some ad spots costing up to 3.5 million dollars this year, these brief interruptions from the game action requires a strategic, memorable advertisement to grab viewer attention. When Honda purchased a 2012 Super Bowl spot for to show off the all-new Honda CR-V, the automaker’s dull image will be livened-up by the theme of the 1986 comedy “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”.

For the Honda commercial, Matthew Broderick reprises the adventure without necessarily continuing his famous movie character. Instead of playing the devilishly cunning Ferris Bueller, Broderick‘s “Day Off” with the Honda CR-V revolves around the actor playing hooky from a film executive. Though the Honda commercial relives many scenes from the original 1986 movie, the entire 2-minute, 25-second spot is a fresh piece of entertainment. Thanks to the direction of Todd Phillips (director/producer of Old School and the Hangover movies), Broderick and the Honda CR-V have wonderful comedic chemistry through this leaked Super Bowl commercial.

<script type="text/javascript"

The Leap List campaign is Honda’s attempt to encourage the Generation Y buyers to follow through with their aspiration. Of course, Honda intends for that the CR-V crossover vehicle will fill the criteria needed for extraordinary personal adventures.

In risk of giving away too much of this clever advertisement, I invite you to check out Honda’s Youtube link for a preview screening of the commercial. During the 2012 Super Bowl, football fans will see Matthew Broderick’s Day Off with the Honda CR-V in the fourth quarter of New England Patriot versus New York Giants.
Official 2012 Honda CR-V Game Day Commercial – “Matthew’s Day Off” Extended Version

Are you still reading this article? Taking audiences into a vast computer program called the Grid, the 1982 release of the motion picture not an immediate hit. However, the acceptance and admiration of Tron evolved as our virtual technology rapidly grew. Following the journey for which the first movie endured, film company Disney decided to rejoin the innovative franchise accepting the all-new world outside as well as inside the Grid. In the 2010 release Tron: Legacy, the revamped Grid’s most captivating creations was a new-generation Light Cycle. For those finding life outside of the Grid rather dull and confiding, United States retailer Hammacher Schlemmer offers a product recreating to sensation of the modern Tron film update for the real world roads.

A street-legal motorcycle, the $55,000 vehicle is brought to life featuring all the bright and unique Light Cycle attributes. Parker Brothers Custom Choppers of Florida began crafting the Tron Light Cycle last year ahead of the winter blockbuster. Having previously recreated the Batpod from the 2008 Batman movie instalment “The Dark Knight”, the chore of adapting to Light Cycle into reality was an equally successful feat.

Closely replicating the movie vehicle on a steel frame wearing fiberglass panels, The Light Cycle’s memorable shape is accompanied by the two hubless wheels. Riding on tires originally sourced for trucks, the Light Cycle design rolls thanks to customized wheel rims. Just like the Light Cycles that raced around in the Tron: Legacy action scenes, the motorcycle illuminates the roadway. While light ribbons are out of the question, the real-life Light Cycle wears several electroluminescent strips running along the wheel rims, tire cowls and along the side panels.

Losing little of the Tron: Legacy movie vehicle’s charm, the Light Cycle presents near identical riding positioning as that of the film’s characters. A padded leather saddle seat forces the rider’s body forward with handlebars positioned through the front wheel. As the handles serve as the acceleration and braking of the Light Cycle, foot pedals allows the rider to select one of six forward gears in the constant mesh manual transmission.

While Tron fans would relate to the fictional Light Cycle being powered by pure liquid energy, limitations of such a fuel source outside of the Tron world have left gasoline as the only suitable alternative. A 996cc Suzuki four-cycle is the powerplant choice fuel-injected from two fuel tanks (a 3.5 gallon main tank and a 1.25 gallon reserve reservoir). A fully-operational motorcycle, the Hammacher Schlemmer catalogue write-up suggests the Tron-inspired Light Cycle is best enjoyed for easy trips.

Available from the Hammacher Schlemmer rich catalogue, the $55,000 Light Cycle continues a legacy extending beyond the Tron movie. A company founded in 1848, Hammacher Schlemmer exists as a business catering to the customer who has everything as well as the ones demanding niche items. Apart from the Tron Light Cycle, other eye-catching items currently available to order from this retailer of the innovative as well as the unusual includes a two-story inflatable reindeer, the $108,000 Tango electric car and a B-9 robot created from the original prop blueprints of the Lost in Space television show.

Unfortunately, the $55,000 real-life Light Cycle lacks a special characteristic that would be an immense help for city parking. Whereas the Light Cycles in the movie can be formulated from a user’s baton, this Tron tribute maintains a permanent state as a 474-pound machine.

Information source: Hammacher Schlemmer, Parker Brothers Custom Choppers
Photo source: Hammacher Schlemmer (Photographed by Michael Lichter)

Related posts:

Audi To Build e-Tron

Audi e-tron Debuts With HUGE Torque

e-tron Not As Torquey Says Audi

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Senna Film Captures The Human Behind Hero

Cool Stuff

Lotus

McLaren

Misc

Movies

auto racing

ayrton senna

documentary

formula 1

formula one

racing film

senna

Despite the physical toll on drivers and team members, mental focus along with the obvious rush of competition, auto racing is often disregarded or completely neglected from professional sports. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

Despite the physical toll on drivers and team members, mental focus along with the obvious rush of competition, auto racing is often disregarded or completely neglected from professional sports. Some critics against the ‘sports’ classification on auto racing references car as largely responsible for the athletic aspect during an event. A sharply untrue statement, the truest most example of a motorsports athlete the legendary Brazilian Ayrton Senna. 65 pole positions, 41 wins and three world championships earned through 161 races at the highest Formula 1 competition captures the 10-year career of Ayrton Senna numerically. Impressive statistics, the film documentary Senna personifies the late athlete behind the Formula 1 achievements.

Giving a detailed look at a charismatic individual, Senna works with some rich source material. Better than the fictional work of almost any Hollywood blockbuster producer, the real life chronicle of Ayrton Senna presents a superb story of love, action political drama, conflict, heroism and ultimately tragic loss.

Competing in Formula 1 from 1984 to 1994, Ayrton Senna’s career and life is beautifully documented. While cold, hard statistics is of interest to hardcore Formula 1 racing fans, Senna avoids burying itself in statistics giving a more personal look at the Brazilian legend. Through Senna family home video, interviews, and through a rare peek into the Formula 1 drivers meetings of the early 1990s, the racer’s personality is brought to life 15 years after his tragic crash at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. Senna’s parents and sister, McLaren team principal Ron Dennis along with Formula 1 series’ chief doctor Sid Waltkins enlightens us on the life of the legendary sports figure.

Ayrton Senna’s famous second place drive at Monaco driving a Toleman race car, first win with Lotus, all three championships with McLaren and the climatic 1991 victory at his home Grand Prix of Brazil are highlighted as grand moments in a 10-year career. Showing some of the greatest drives of the Brazilian professional, Senna’s mastery in the rain is a continuing theme in the documentary as a supernatural force connected for an arguably supernatural being.

Customary for any detailed look at Ayrton Senna is the famous feud between his McLaren teammate through the late 1980s Alain Prost. Entering the McLaren team in 1988 with Prost being the established driver, Senna’s addition to the league’s top organization was exhibited as an acrimonious situation which boiled over into the most volatile relationships among sports teammates. After Ayrton Senna grabbed his first driver’s world title in 1988 through a brilliant drive, the following year’s championship was decided with a controversial collision between Senna and Prost. By virtue of this incident, this documentary gains two antagonists through Alain Prost and the past FIA president Jean-Marie Balestre. A Frenchman like Prost, Balestre elected to punish Senna for driving through a chicane in rejoining the race. Though the McLaren team feud showed to competitors at their best (and possibility worse), Senna’s relationship with both of those figures shows off a more layered relationship than a basic ‘hero and villain’ battle.

From beginning to the end of Ayrton Senna’s life in 1994, the film dramatically characterizes changes to the driver’s psyche. While Senna remains a kind, caring and passionate person throughout his racing career, Ayrton Senna is seen as one eager, young hot shoe upon receiving a ride in the Toleman. Early in the movie, Ayrton Senna was a man deeply in love with life and racing following many carefree years in go-karting. Through the story of the young Senna, he is quickly caught up on the auto racing series’ politics.

While Senna correctly portrays the Formula 1 driving legend as a hero to the impoverished and opposed people of Brazil, the documentary also shows Ayrton Senna as a person pushed to conflict with even his own competitive principles. In the 1990 Formula 1 title fight, the documentary replays footage of how Senna took the champion through a collision with Prost at the Japanese Grand Prix mirroring the incident one year before. As politics become a main theme to Ayrton Senna’s career as he rose to a three-time world champion, the Brazilian legend would ironically to shown initiating arguments in the latter years of his career. One such incident occurred as Senna wanted his Williams team to issue a protest against the Benetton racing team car piloted by eventual 7-time Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher.

Featuring graphic crash footage, the documentary plainly reveals that Ayrton Senna was not oblivious to dangers of racing. As a benchmark competitor, it was important for the Brazilian driver to know his fellow racers were alive after the most vicious crashes. Relying on a deep belief in god, there were times Senna commented he felt a surreal connection while racing. Near the end of Ayrton Senna’s life, the documentary illustrates a man in conflict with an unbalanced Williams-Renault race car as well as an unsettled soul.

Though so many viewers realize the conclusion of Senna, the film brilliantly concludes after 1 hour, 45 minutes as more than just a motorsport movie. A human being pressing himself to greatness, Ayrton Senna’s humble nature becomes the basis for what is now an enduring dynasty.

Photo source: Chris Nagy, MPH The Prestige & Performance Motor Show, Veloce

Related posts:

Top 10 Most Outrageous Moments from “The Transporter” Film Series

The Good Showing for the 2011 Goodwood Festival

McLaren MP4-12C to Enter GT3 Sports Car Racing

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Top 20 Car Movies

Aston Martin

BMW

Car Opinions

Chevy

Ford

List

Misc

Movies

featured

movies

top 20

If there’s anything I like more than cars, it’s movies about cars. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

1. Dazed and Confused : This film about the last day of school in 1976 might have stars like Ben Affleck and Matthew McConaughey in it, but I know it really stars a 1970 Pontiac Judge GTO, a 1972 Chevrolet C10, a 1972 Plymouth Duster, a 1955 Chevrolet 3100 pickup, a 1975 Chevrolet El Camino, a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454, and a 1974 Pontiac Trans Am SD-455 just to name a few. This movie makes me think I was born a decade too late.

2. American Graffiti : The iconic car film from George Lucas has not only a great story but some great cars. Among them are a 1932 Deuce Coupe, a 1955 Chevrolet, a 1958 Chevrolet Impala, a 1951 Mercury, a 1956 Ford Thunderbird, and a 1961 Ford Galaxy.

3. Two-Lane Blacktop : A great cross country drag race movie staring folk singer James Taylor. Yes, the same James Taylor that sings music your parents listen too. This movie, set on Route 66, pairs up a primered old 1955 Chevrolet against a 1970 Pontiac GTO. The GTO was rumored to be a Judge, but no decals are present anywhere on the car to indicate it is.

4. Bullitt : The best car chase scene ever is in this film. The seven minute chase through the streets of San Francisco was between a 1968 Ford Mustang GT 390 and a 1968 Dodge Charger.

5. Ronin : Another great car chase movie, but the first on this list to star mainly imports. Among the cast were 1976 Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL, a 1991 BMW 535i disguised to look like an E34, a 1998 Audi S8, and 1995 Citroen XM.

6. The Smokey and The Bandit franchise : Who can forget these three movies in any list? Not me! The series covers 1977, 1980, and 1983 and each time The Bandit got a new Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. Also among the great cars in this movie are a wide variety of motor homes, big rigs, and earth moving equipment. There’s something in here for everyone!

7. The Cannonball Run : One big car chase across the US, this movie stars a 1964 Aston Martin DB5, a 1976 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, a 1977 Ferrari 308 GTS, a 1980 Lamborghini Countach LP 400S, and a 1978 Dodge Sportsman.

8. Speed Zone! : Staring in this movie were a 1985 Bentley Continental, a 1988 BMW 735i, a Lamborghini Countach replica, a 1987 Ford Mustang, and even a Ford Econoline van.

9. Catch Me if You Can : This classic of the 80′s car movies depicts a goodie two shoes student government president with the school bad boy against the local drag race organizer in a battle for cash that she needs to keep the school open. Ever heard of “Fast Freddie?” Well, he comes out of retirement to save the day. The stars are a 1968 Chevrolet Malibu, a 1957 Chevrolet Two-Ten, a 1978 Chevrolet Camaro, and a 1967 Lincoln Continental.

10. Corvette Summer : After a trip to the local salvage yard lands a 1973 Chevrolet Corvette junk pile into a local high school automotive class and is then stolen, we find ourselves following Luke Skywalker famed Mark Hamil into Vegas. In addition to the ‘Vette, the movie stars a 1971 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, a Chevrolet van, and a great 1973 Datsun 240Z (that only graces the screen for a few moments).

11. The Driver : This is one where we route for the bad guys, mainly because we like the cars the getaway driver uses. The top cars in this flick are a 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280S, a 1973 Chevrolet C-10, a 1976 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, a 1965 Ford Mustang, and a 1973 Ford Galaxie 500.

12. Both of The Italian Jobs : The original was filmed in 1969 and the remake debuted in 2003. The 69 version used a trio of 1967 Aston Mini Cooper S’s to heist the loot, while the updated version updated to the 2003 MINI Cooper S’s now owned by BMW. Also included between both versions are a 1962 Aston Martin DB4 and an Aston Martin DB7 Volante.

13. Both of the Gone in 60 Seconds : This original and remake duo are a car collectors dream. Both centering on car thieves who need to collect cars before a dead line the 1974 version’s main prize is a 1971 Ford Mustang. In the 2000 version, the unicorn is a 1967 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500. My favorite car in either of these films has to be the 1971 Plymouth Hemi Barracuda. I’ll let you remember why.

14. Cars : The only cartoon to enter the list, you have to love this movie. It has no people in it whatsoever, only cars! It stars Lightning McQueen, rumored to be inspired by Steve McQueen, as an original NASCAR style car. But real cars were animated for this film including a 1951 Hudson Hornet, a 1986 Buick Regal, a 1959 Chevrolet Impala, a 1951 GM LeSabre, a 1970 Plymouth Superbird, and a 2002 Porsche 911 Carrera just to name a few.

15. Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby : Among the funniest movies ever, Ricky Bobby became my favorite NASCAR driver of all time. This film has plenty of NASCAR race cars in the limelight, but off the track the baddest car in this one is the 1969 Chevrolet Malibu that Ricky’s dad drives.

16. Days of Thunder : Keeping with the NASCAR theme, this movie too has a lot of great stock car action. The highlight though is when the two rival race car drivers (played by Tom Cruise and Michael Rooker) start off racing inside a hospital in wheel chairs and end up on the streets in a 1990 Chevrolet Lumina (Cruise) and a 1990 Ford Taurus (Rooker).

17. Faster : This revenge movie staring Dewayne Johnson really stars the super black 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle SS that he drives. The hit man hired to hunt him drives a 2002 Ferrari F360 Modena because he has entirely too much money.

18. The Fast and The Furious franchise : Among the great tuners and old school muscle in these films are the 1984 Buick Grand National, 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX Sti, 2002 Nissan Skyline GT-R, 1970 Plymouth Road Runner, 1993 Honda Civic Coupe, 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse, 1995 Toyota Supra, 1970 Dodge Charger, 1999 Ford F-150 Lightning, 1969 Chevrolet Camaro, 1970 Chevrolet Malibu, 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T, 2001 Honda S2000, 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder, third generation Mazda RX-7, 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX, 2002 Nissan Fairlady Z, 2010 Dodge Charger SRT-8, 1971 Nissan Skyline, and a Armet Gurkha F5.

19. The Transporter franchise : In this trifecta of Jason Statham movies, the luxury imports reign supreme. Among them are the 2008 Audi A8, 2005 Audi A8 L, 1995 BMW 735i, and plenty of support from Mercedes-Benz, Peugeot, Renault, and Fiat.

20. The Transformers franchise: Last but not least are these robots in disguise. Among the leading automotive cast are the 1977, 2009, 2010, and 2012 Chevrolet Camaro‘s, 2006 GMC Topkick, and 1997 Peterbuilt 379.

Related posts:

2011 Automotive Super Bowl Commercials

Cars That Shouldn’t Exist – Pontiac G5

Fourth of July Special: Cars That Make Me Proud To Be An American

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Transformers 3: A Car-Lover’s Dream

Chevy

Cool Stuff

GM

Movies

458 Italia

AMG

Autobots

Bumblebee

Camaro

Chevrolet

Decepticons

featured

Ferrari

Ironhide

Mercedes SLS AMG

Optimus Prime

SLS

Soundwave

Transformers

Transformers 3

We waited on bated breath for the previews to end and the main attraction to get started. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

We waited on bated breath for the previews to end and the main attraction to get started. Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon was finally here. My husband, our kids, and I have been waiting to see this movie since we first heard about its release a year or so back. We have been this excited to see every installment to the franchise for a couple of reasons – Camaro, Peterbuilt, and Topkick, just to name a few.

The cars are truly the stars and most fans are car enthusiasts. My kids decided that they want every one, and who can blame them. But me, I don’t want them all, just a few.

If I had my druthers, I would gladly take the 2012 Bumblebee Camaro, and pretty soon I might have my way when the car is release in 2012.

But, the fifth generation Bumblebee could only reign supreme for so long. Michael Bay introduced some great disguises for the Transformers in this movie. First, there is the reintroduction to a long time Transformers character, Mirage. While Mirage has been around as long as Optimus, this is his first appearance on the big screen. The character has always been synonymous with fast formula one inspired car forms, and this time is no different with Mirage taking cover as a red Ferrari 458 Italia. First introduced to the world in late 2009, the Italia is among the fastest production cars out there reaching speeds in excess of 200 mph with a 570bhp power house under the hood. While you can pick up the seven speed beauty for around $225,000 don’t expect it to come with the swords that Mirage wields in defense of humans.

The next pleasant surprise to the car line up is the silver Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, which also sadly turned out to be Soundwave, a Decepticon driven by the new love interest of Sam, Carly Spencer, played by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. The 563bhp, throaty V-8 is a gift to Carly from her car collecting boss Dylan, played by Patrick Dempsey, to “just drive.” The $200,000 price tag becomes a rift line in the relationship between Sam and Carly, but when it’s discovered that the gift was really a spy, all is forgiven.

Another new entry is Sentinel Prime, a Rosenbauer Panther Airport Crash Tender fire truck. The futuristic design of the cab takes a new twist on an old favorite; I mean, who didn’t want to drive a firetruck when they were kids? The Panther 6×6 was designed by firefighters and can be operated by one person from inside the cab. Among the slowest cars in the film reaching a whopping top speed of about 75mph, it is among of the most powerful with a 665hp, 14 liter, 854cid engine from Detroit Diesel. The unparalleled visibility from the cab makes this a stand out machine, and a no-brainer choice for Optimus’ mentor, who has to be on the lookout for foes from every side.

The Wreckers are a trio of Autobots that transform into heavily armored NASCAR Chevrolet Impalas. A cool collection of characters, Leadfoot, Roadbuster, and Topspin bust the NASCAR mold when in robot form. In car form however, rings true to NASCAR standards with all three appearing to fit into the body line- minus the guns. NASCAR cars are equipped with 358cid V-8′s that produce top speeds of 200mph with 850bhp, and these three seem to be as well. They speed into danger at a critical time for all of humanity.

Let’s not forget the original Transformers that return. Optimus Prime, the Peterbuilt 379 and his slick refrigerated style trailer that turns into an armament depot. Ironhide as the jacked-up GMC Topkick C4500 that rushes head first into danger. Ratchet, the H2 Hummer rescue vehicle. While these are all memorable Autobots, we can’t overlook their nemeses the Decepticons and their never say die leader, Megatron. He has reached a rusty new low in his auto form this film by turning into heavily fortified “Mad Max” style Mack truck. Before he returns to take over Chicago, Megatron is hanging out in the desert trying to rebuild who he once was. You would think an intelligent machine would know that sand isn’t good on metal.

The most destructive force on the Decepticon side has to be Driller, which has no auto form. He lives underground surfacing like the great tentacled monsters of old fisherman stories when the bad guys need, say, a building destroyed. Rounding out the Decepticon lineup are a WM garbage truck, an F-22 Raptor, 3 Chevrolet Suburbans, an Audi R8, and a M1Abrams tank.

Any way you slice it, Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon is a car lovers dream. A great street machine that can change into an intergalactic superhero is what we all want out of our car, right? This movie not only draws the auto enthusiast into the film, but introduces these man made marvels to the next generation. As kids file out of the theater and into the store they can pick up all of the Transformers and a few not in the movie in the local toy isle. They will learn, even if unknowingly, each make and model of their hero’s and foe’s. They will overrun with specs and thoughts about which one would win in a race. That’s how Transformers have survived among us since 1984 in various car forms and I for one see no end to the disguises in sight.

Related posts:

New Corvette Spied on Set of Transformers 2

2010 Chevy Camaro Transformers Edition

The Bumblebee Sting: 2012 Chevy Camaro Transformers Edition

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

The Bumblebee Sting: 2012 Chevy Camaro Transformers Edition

Car News

Chevy

Misc

Movies

2012 Camaro

2012 cars

2012 Chevrolet

Camaro SS

chevrolet camaro

Chevrolet Camaro Transformers Special Edition

featured

Transformers Special Edition

In the Transformers franchise, Bumblebee is an underestimated but valiantly heroic figure in the Transformers noble and human-friendly clan of Autobots. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

In the Transformers franchise, Bumblebee is an underestimated but valiantly heroic figure in the Transformers noble and human-friendly clan of Autobots. Appearing in the Michael Bay movie serial in the guise of Chevrolet products, Bumblebee infuriated the life of Sam Witwicky in the form of a 1976 Camaro as the young human search for a first car. Sam quickly realized there was more than meets the eye in the seemingly unremarkable pony car. Bumblebee soon upgrade to a new generation Camaro becoming a protector and eventual friend to his human companion.

A refreshing event to see a human and machine relate in the first two Transformers movies, so many motorists feel an intimate connection to our vehicles. Though it is unlikely we’ll have our vehicles revealed as sentient metal life forms from a distant planet called Cybertron, automobiles exist as a very personalized creation. Sometimes, a very elite vehicle can symbolize a relationship a driver wants to have in real life. For fans of the Transformers movie franchise, Chevrolet has created a special package linked to the famous Bumblebee character. A $3,000 addition to the 2012 Camaro Coupe in either LT or SS trim levels, the Transformers Special Edition model allows buyers to more closely experience the vehicle mode of the fictional Autobot warrior.

“Hiding in plain sight” were words Autobots leader Optimus Prime used describing the role these crusading alien warriors wished to perform on Earth. However, there is little obscuring the appearance of the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro Transformers Special Edition. Wearing yellow and black colours, the special edition version for the 2012 model year differs in layout from previous Transformers Camaro cars. While the previous factory Bumblebee clones wore the matte black similarly to Rally Sport striping, the 2012 Camaro Transformers Special Edition has the striping positioned wider as it travels from the hood to the rear deck lid. Unique to the Transformers Special Edition package, the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro is given a sports car racing-type rear spoiler. Michael Mann, he of Miami Vice/The Insider/Heat/Crime Story/Manhunter etc., will be directing a film about the ferocious rivalry between Ford and Ferrari at the 1966 Le Mans race for 20th Century Fox (the studio behind Star Wars, Indiana Jones et al). The script will be based on the book written by AJ Baimes (who I know nothing about, and the only mention of him on the interwebs are connected to this movie) and Variety says that Brad Pitt has been mentioned as a possible lead.

The film we be titled “Go Like Hell” and it will, most likely, pale in comparison to the real thing, like racing movies always do.

See, I like movies, I really do. And God knows I like racing, so you think this would be a total winner for me. Going off of that, you’d also think that any movies about racing would work for me, but they don’t.

Movies about racing, like movies about fake rock and roll personalities, have one huge flaw in them: They are fiction. And in the case of real racing (and real life rock and roll for that matter), fiction flat out pales in comparison to real life.

Think about it. What happens in a racing movie? Let’s take “Days Of Thunder” as a sad, yet true to form example of the genre. It breaks down like this: A young up and coming racer, Cole Trickle (played by a block of wood shaped like Tom Cruise) has his sights set of fame and glory and victory on the NASCAR circuit. He comes from our of nowhere, upsets the established good ol’boys, shows definite talent, nearly dies in a spectacular crash, woos a neurosurgeon (played, unbelievably, by Nicole Kidman), overcomes, in order, the derision of the good ol’boys, the devastating trauma of his physics-defying crash, the reticence of Mz. Kidman to have sex with a Scientologist, and COMES FROM BEHIND TO WIN THE BIG RACE!!!!!

What a surprise …

See, that’s the problem with all racing movies (and rock movies). You know the protagonist is going to win, against all odd, just like you know the plucky up and coming singer/songwriter is going to be a big hit. Yeah, I know, Steve McQueen came in second in Le Mans (which is a pretty good film, all in all), but he took one for the team to get a victory.

That’s why real life, and real life racing is so much more interesting than any work of fiction: You never know the outcome.

Think of it. How many times have you watched a race, a given driver way in the lead, and something happens on the last lap (or late in the race) and he goes down to defeat? I can’t even count the times, at this point in my life – although when Nigel Mansell konked out two corners from the end of the Canadian GP because he was too busy waving to the crowd to not stall the car springs to mind as a particularly funny example.

So that is the background milieu that Michael Mann steps into with his (rumored everywhere) upcoming Le Mans movie. Now, Mann definitely does have the chops, there’s no denying that. “Heat” was a very well done movie. Hell he was able to keep Al Pacino in check for 80% of that flick, which is no small achievement. But he’s walking into a subject that is not fiction, not that far in the past and not lacking for documentation.

What will this film tell us that hasn’t already been covered? There are literally tons of books and magazine articles about Ford’s decision to take on Ferrari at Le Mans (and I already own most of them) and on top of that, we know the outcome: Ford won. Oh, I’m sorry, I should have given you a spoiler alert, shouldn’t I?

Sure, sure, you might be able to throw in some back at the factory drama. I, for one, would have loved to seen the look on Henry Ford II’s face when Enzo told him to get packing, the merger is off. Now that I think about it, if Mann were in fact to cover this, just think about all the shades of purple modern computer graphics could turn an actors face.

And speaking of actors, Brad Pitt? Seriously? Who the hell would he play? Look, the guys got talent and not just looks. He was spot on perfect as Tyler Durden and can have great comedic timing … but I don’t recall anyone that pretty racing cars back then. Of the major players, drivers, engineers, team owners, none of them look even close to Pitt … seriously, who? Lee Iacocca?

Of course, by predilection and grousing aside, if this gets out of the gate and gets made, it will probably be a hit (especially if the Pitt rumors turn out to be true). Hell, “Days Of Thunder” was a hit and people within NASCAR still refer to it in positive terms.

I guess there can be a positive upside to all this. If it gets made, and people go see it, it will get them interested in racing. Which means that, after it all boils down, some people might get a better understanding of cars and driving and things might get better out there for us gearheads.

Source: Empire On Line Photo from Flicker user cosmic_spanner

Related posts:

McLaren/Mercedes GP Season From Hell

IND Green Hell 600HP BMW M3 Coupe

<a href='http://www.automoblog.net/2008/09/09/how-the-hell-did-this-happen-the-chevy-volt-leaks-onto-the-web/' rel='bookmark' title='How The Hell did This Happen? Connery conveyed through 7 movies (including Never Say Never Again which was released outside of the canonical 007 universe) a cool, sophisticated man of action image becoming an idolized persona which men wanted to be and women wanted to be with in any reality.

As Sean Connery is recognized as the only true movie James Bond by many, the Aston Martin DB5 is accepted by fans of the franchise as the essential spy car. Though some fine automobiles would be featured as James Bond’s transportation, the vehicles of Lotus and BMW could only envy the original DB5. The fan love for 007′s Aston Martin became evident October 27th as RM Auctions in association with Sotheby’s hammered away the actual car seen in two of the most iconic movies inspired by Sir Ian Fleming.

The only surviving 1964 Aston Martin DB5 used on-screen, the modified British sports car was featured in both 1964′s Goldfinger and the follow-up 1965 movie Thunderball in prominent but different roles. Stalking the main villain through Swiss roads as well as the stunt driving for Goldfinger, this same DB5 was armed with all the prop Q Branch gadgets before receiving a jetpacking Agent 007 in the opening of Thunderball. The bullet proof rear shield, oil slick spreaders and the revolving license plate are unique equipment no production car would offer. While the long and beautiful silver DB5 lives a glorious life on-screen, this vehicle was somewhat less stimulating.

Following Thunderball, the 1964 DB5 completed a promotional tour before being returned to the Aston Martin Lagonda factory. It was in 1969 that American radio broadcaster Jerry Lee gave $12,000 for the famous movie prop. Forget about living twice, many would have enjoyed the opportunity to live once to purchase this historic Aston Martin DB5 in 1969. Having owned this James Bond Aston Martin since, Lee’s decision to list the car was to benefit his charitable foundation. Devoted to social causes such as crime prevention, the Jerry Lee Foundation will gain considerably from the London auction. An American bidder struck like thunderball with a £2,912,000 bid (the equivalent of $4,608,500 US) to acquire the one of history’s most famous vehicles. The winning bidder has been identified as Harry Yeaggy, a businessman and renowned car collector promising to preserve one of British’s great motoring creations within the United States.

If an incentive was actually needed for those with loaded bank accounts bidding on this rare DB5, the winner truly takes all. A Dormeiul “Vanguish II” fabric woven worth £30,000 (roughly $48,000 US) was fashioned by movie tailor Gieves & Hawkes. As one more perk presented to the lucky Aston Martin DB5 owner, a 7-day trip to the Jamaican GoldenEye Resort is an exclusive luxury getaway available to 10 guests. The resort, gaining inspiration from the late James Bond author as well as Jamaican resident Sir Ian Fleming, allows the winning bidder to absorb the vibes of the spy story writer in his own beachside Villa.

Prior to the 1964 Aston Martin DB5 being sent to its new owner, British premium sports car builder was able to capture a special family reunion picture. The DB5 which arguably saved Aston Martin posed with the company’s new blood, 2011 Aston Martin DB9.

Information and photo credit: RM Auctions and Aston Martin

Related posts:

James Bond can’t drive the new Aston Martin?

Aston Martin DB9S – From Project Kahn

Anonymous buyer orders ten Aston Martin One-77s

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

25 Years After Going Back to the Future; the DeLorean DMC-12

Car News

Cool Stuff

Giugiaro

Movies

Back to the Future

Delorean

dmc-12

On precisely July 3rd 2010, the movie Back to the Future turn celebrate 25 years since its debut to American audiences. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

On precisely July 3rd 2010, the movie Back to the Future turn celebrate 25 years since its debut to American audiences. The Steven Spielberg movie which spanned into a trilogy turned into a blockbuster and cultural icon featuring Michael J. Fox as a teenager Marty McFly who unwitting sent on a time-traveling adventure starting in 1955. Aided by eccentric but good-natured scientist Dr. Emmett Brown (known as Doc), their vessel of choice through this their journey in time was a modified DeLorean DMC-12. Selected by the Doc simply because he wanted a time machine to have some style, the DeLorean traveled through the four different eras of time of the fictional Hill Valley (not including the alternative 1985 which saw arch rival Biff Tannen operating as criminal overlord of a so-called Hell Valley). Lighting up the scenery like a Christmas tree, the DeLorean time machine now has a silver anniversary to accompany the stainless steel body.

Immortalized as the time machine in Back to the Future, the story of the actual DeLorean Motor Company contains scenes suitable for an R-rated movie. Founded by John DeLorean, this was the popular executive who steered Pontiac through the 1960s. Under DeLorean’s reign, the GTO and Firebird were born into reality giving the Pontiac division what would arguably prove to be the brand’s last, great years. First turning his sports car dreams into a business in 1976, DeLorean envisioned a cutting-edge rotary engine performance car. Hiring noted Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, John DeLoreans’ image of a stainless steel bodied sports car started off promising. The famous gull-wing doors, while being a charming character touch, was also designed so taller people like DeLorean (who stood 6 foot, 4 inches) could more easily enter and exit the vehicle.

But while styling was captured, the former General Motors boss would concede much of first original ideas over three years of design development giving up on the rotary engine technology as well as an exotic, patented materials for chassis construction. Because of the more radical initial plans for the DeLorean car, Lotus sports car magnate Colin Chapman was brought in to engineer a more conventional sports car chassis.

The end result is a DMC-12 which failed to meet performance expectations. Cited as the leading problem would be the PRV (Peugeot-Renault-Volvo) powerplant DeLorean elected to use. A 130 horsepower engine deeply injured the speed potential of the DMC-12. Amounting to a 10-plus second 0-60 mile per hour acceleration time, the DeLorean time machine barely had enough spunk to outrun a Volkswagen Microbus in a California mall parking lot. In fact, Marty owed his live to the flux capacitor as the vehicle time jump at 88 miles per hour. Power challenged, the engine was also a problem area within the production of the Back to he Future trilogy as it repeatedly overheated during production of the first film. Through part 2 and 3, an air-cooled Porsche powerplant was fitted within the DMC-12 engine bay.

In the movies, the time machine DeLorean’s fate would be met shortly after bringing Marty back home to 1985 as a freight train tore through the stainless modified sports car. The DeLorean Motor Company’s ending is slower but comparably as dramatic. Following a two-year delay at the Belfast, Ireland manufacturing facility as financial problems immediately threatened DeLorean, The British government invested an equivalent to $160 million to insure cars would leave the factory in 1981. Surviving two turbulent years of production, selling the high-priced car within a recession, DeLorean Motor Company ceased after 9,200 DMC-12s were built. Concurring, company founder John DeLorean was tried on drug trafficking charges which he would be acquitted on after trial.

An belated Hollywood ending, the DeLorean DMC-12′s co-starring role in Back to the Future 25 years ago allowed the stainless steel to glimmer a little more brightly considering its troubled infancy. Then again, the comeback story is always a favourite.

In other news, as an automotive correspondent, it is may regret to report the following news. It seems that the hover car conversion kits, shown in the second movie of the Back to the Future trilogy, might not be ready before or on the year 2015.

Information Source: Klastorin, Michael; Hibbin, Sally (1990). Sadly, it was the only car the DeLorean Motor Company ever produced, so that’s why you don’t hear it being called the DMC-12. Our DeLorean is a 1/12th size replica of the one used in the Back to the Future movies, including fully-detailed moving parts, lights, and sound effects. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

While poking around for background info on another car story I came across this little bit of (what could be) great news: Hollywood will be doing a biopic about Phil Hill, the first American world driving champion, and Tobey Maguire is going to take the lead.

Like all announcements of upcoming racing movies, I look upon this with an equal mixture of hope and dread.

Hope, because I love a good movie, and maybe, just maybe, they can make a good one about racing this time around. And dread because … well Sweet Jesus, have you seen Sylvester Stallone’s “Driven”?

Racing movies, by and large, suck. They take the one thing that racing has in spades, unpredictability, and hammer it flat and paint it beige. Is the young up and coming bad-boy racer going to work his way through the pack with a magical drive to win the big race and get the girl? Well duh! People didn’t pay ten bucks to see Tom Cruise NOT win, now did they? Or Kip Pardue, if I want to keep the “Driven” thing going. But I don’t. Because up until “Redline” came out, “Driven” was the worst racing movie ever made. Yeah, “Redline” wasn’t exactly a racing movie, but it was centered around racing, illegal street racing, illegal street racing run my high stakes gambling rap moguls and Mafia types, but it had all the clichés plus a few new ones and really, really stank up the screen.

But a biopic about Phil Hill … now that could be an entirely different affair.

From what I could gather, the plans for the movie are to focus on Hill’s championship season of 1961, and his relationship with, and competition against his teammate, friend and closest rival Count Wolfgang von Trips. Right there you got something that sounds made up by Hollywood, but it’s true: the guys name was really Wolfgang von Trips, and he was an honest to God Count, but everyone called him Taffy, due to the color of his hair.

Many, many racers, and von Trips was among them, are very simplistic people. They have a desire to go fast, an uncommon amount of bravery, and a sense of competitiveness that makes fighter pilots look like nuns.

Apart from those basic traits Phil Hill was NOT like that. Hill was a hugely complex person and was dubbed early in his career as “Hamlet in a helmet” and they weren’t kidding. The son of a postman, born and raised in Santa Monica, California, Phil rose to prominence in the West Coast post-war sports car racing boom. He was friends with, and competed against the likes of Dan Gurney and Masten Gregory and Ritchie Ginther and Carroll Shelby when Shelby was a driver and not a car builder. More importantly, he regularly beat those guys, and seemingly everyone else he came across. But unlike those guys, he wasn’t your typical racer for the time.

Moody, quiet, introspective, he was most often described as “sensitive” and that pretty much hit the mail on the head. You could see that “things” would have an affect on Hill that would barely register with other drivers, but then in the next instant, you’d see that Hill would somehow subsume whatever external forces were causing him distress, and then go even faster.

And by “things” I mean typical events racers had to face in the 1950s and 60s. “Things” like seeing a friend and fellow competitor trapped and burning alive in his car, or having to talk with a team manager about a rival not just going off the track, but going off the track and mowing down a few kids like they were weeds.

Back then, most racers would just shrug and get on with the next task at hand. Death was everywhere, so why get worked up about it. Hill would, but only for the briefest of moments. You could see the shock and recognition on his face like you were reading an open book. Then just as quickly, the book would close, and Hill would go out, and everybody else on the track had bigger problems to face: Dealing with a now faster and even more determined kid from Santa Monica.

I won’t spoil the story (for those of you who don’t know it) about Hill & von Trips and the 1961 Grand Prix season, but suffice to say that if I were to present it to you as an idea for a movie, and you didn’t know it already, you’d think I was joking.

There is enough drama and twists and politics and pressure and, ultimately, blood on the tracks to make you think it’s the product of the overworked imagination of a Hollywood screenwriter. But it’s all too real, and hopefully, Hollywood will get it right this time, and the guy that seems to have enough suppressed quirks of his own (Maguire) can bring the story to the big screen with some integrity.

Source: AutoBlog

Photo from Flickr user Tostie14

Related posts:

Phil Hill, American Champion 1927 – 2008

The Jaguar E-Type Lightweight Low Drag Coupe, Building a Better Cat

Zero Emissions Racing Comes to The Isle of Man TT

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Russian Students Build Death Race-Inspired Camaro

Car News

Chevy

Movies

At the Moscow Tuning Show this year, students from MHPI Design School modified a Chevy Camaro to look like a car from the recent movie Death Race. The movie, a remake of the 1975 flick Death Race 2000, features Jason Statham as a former race car driver who is framed and forced to participate in a race to the death against prisoners in armored cars, fighting to be released from the prison. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

I have a theory, and it seems to be holding: Top 100 (or 1000 or 50 or whatever) lists are mainly there to start discussions, and on many occasions, arguments.

It’s very rare when you’re going to look at a list of something like “The Top 50 Bourbons”, and say, “They’re right ‘Ol Rebel Rot-Gut Special Reserve IS the best bourbon there is!”

Take for example this list from the good folks at the Rotten Tomatoes movie site. They have generated a list of the 50 Most Memorable Movie Cars (apparently that would be to date). As both a movie, and a car guy I braced myself for the seemingly inevitable onslaught of 40 to 45 glaring mistakes.

I made it no further than #s 40 and 39.

#40: Milner’s Deuce Coupe from American Graffiti

#39: Cobretti’s Mercury from the Sylvester Stalone movie Cobra

Are you kidding me?

Are you frickin’ kidding me?!

The fact that Milner’s Deuce Coupe barely scrapes into the top 40 is insulting enough, but to be ranked below an unwatchable Sylvester Stalone vanity piece?

That’s an insult to both car guys AND movie historians.

Milner’s Deuce Coupe is pretty much the rolling definition of “hot rod” and American Graffiti will probably be played to space aliens to show them what “cruising”, “illegal street racing” and “youth car culture” is (assuming it hasen’t been shown to the little grey guys at some theater out at Area 51 already).

But no-oooooooooooooooo.

The dinguses at Rotten Tomatoes said, “You know, Cobretti’s Mercury from Cobra is a totally bitchin’ ride. MUCH better than, say Milner’s Deuce Coupe from American Graffiti .”

Talk about a waste of machinery.

50.
