eBay Find: 560 HP Enjuku Racing Supercharged Hyundai Genesis Coupe

The Hyundai Genesis Coupe is a very cool car. Mainly for a younger crowd, the Coupe gives us the quintessential sports-car layout: front-engine, rear-wheel-drive (FR,) on a lightweight, fun-to-drive platform for a measly $23,000 (starting price.) And what do nearly all import tuners do with an FR layout sports car? Well, they drop in a humongous LS1 V8 from a Corvette, of course.

We originally saw this car at the 2011 SEMA Show in Las Vegas last November. And now it’s for sale – for only $45,000.

Mated to a Magnusun Roots Style Supercharger and T56 Manual Transmission (used in everything from a Dodge Viper to the Aston Martin V12 Vanquish,) this bad boy puts out somewhere around 560 hp to the wheels. Yes, that’s ridiculously fast.

Of course, more than just the engine and transmission were modified to achieve this sort of power. The builders, Enjuku Racing, also installed and replaced all sorts of internals, modified the suspension to BC Racing Coilovers, added a Quaife LSD, BC Racing Wheels, a Wilwood 14″ Front Big Brake Kit to slow all that momentum, SPEC Stage 1 Clutch & Flywheel, ISIS Performance Race Exhaust, Custom headers, Hurst Short shifter, Sparco racing seats, a Carbon Fiber body kit (including the hood, trunk, lip, and roof skin,) and plenty of other minor goodies to make the car safe to drive.

The parts total: $51,000 alone. You can buy the car without the supercharger, but why would you want to? Either way, Enjuku Racing will dyno and tune the car for you upon purchase.

McLaren MP4-12C Gets Hennessey HPE 800 Reworking

What’s next for McLaren? The MP4-12C went into production early last year and it has been doing very well, despite some early quality in niggles. Back in 2010, McLaren promised to launch 5 new models or model variants over the next five years. MP4-12C was 2011′s launch – how about 2012? That is likely to be the MP4-12C Spyder. After that, a new supercar will likely slot in above it.

The guys over at Hennessey aren’t waiting for that though, introducing a new HPE800 package for the MP4-12C that should give it similar performance. As its name implies, Hennessey boosts the MP4-12C’s power level up to 800 brake horsepower, up from 592 hp.

The engine has entirely been reworked, and McLaren’s twin turbos have been swapped out for Hennessey units with higher boost. The extra power requires some significant upgrades in the form of an intercooler, intake, titanium exhaust, transmission and reworked engine management system. Henneessey also says there is a “custom dyno-tuned engine calibration.”

All this is covered under a Hennessey warranty, which is good because this package will void your McLaren one. To match the extra power, Hennessey fitted some exterior upgrades that aim to increase visual excitement. They include a CarbonAero body kit with larger side heat exchangers, a new front air inlet and a hood extractor, along with Monoblock wheels. This aimed at addressing critics who think the MP4-12C isn’t visually engaging enough.

One of the most interesting things about this whole release is a tidbit about the car’s suspension. The 12C’s suspension system has been left untouched. The reason? Hennessey says “factory systems will be difficult to improve on.” That is an extremely strong endorsement of the car’s handling prowess. Normally there is a need to beef up components and rework the suspension when power levels are boosted. The Hennessey McLaren MP4-12C HPE800 will be available as a singular package as well as in individual parts. Pricing information hasn’t been released yet.

The 2012 model year release of the Audi R8 GT to the United States promptly announces the factory’s recognition for the supercar’s top performance potential.

As Audi recognizes the potential in their supercar, aftermarket tuners equally spot the distinguishing shape of the R8. Companies such as STaSIS, PPI Automotive Design and ABT have exercised their creative touches to the very hip Audi R8. A recent addition to a fruitful assortment of modified Audi R8 supercars is the Berlin company TC Concepts. Intent to stand out from the existing tuner riders, the TC Concepts R8 Toxique is an optimization of super supercar style and function. TC Concepts work on bringing an original l masterpiece to life consisted of producing a better-than stock Audi R8 for a reasonable price (reasonable of course being relative to a premium car marketplace).

Brabus Electric Redefines E for Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Before the emergence of the Tesla Roadster, electric cars were in danger of becoming a victim of an undeserved stigma. As most electric vehicle is built to feature a minimized carbon footprint, the common belief was to think of battery-powered cars as lacklustre performers. The Brabus High Performance 4WD Full Electric top speed is 137 miles per hour.

In Eco mode, the Brabus High Performance 4WD Full Electric sedan maintains a tamer 118 mile per hour top speed but provides greater traveling distance. Under the best driving scenario, the Brabus electric sedan can run 217 miles on a single charge. To recharge the Brabus High Performance 4WD Full Electric vehicle, the prototype tuner car presents two enticing options. The Delta ES three-phase on-board charger replenishes the Brabus High Performance 4WD Full Electric’s lithium-ion battery in a very reasonable 5-hour time cycle. Using a 380-volt, 3-phase RWE Combi Station, Brabus touts the High Performance 4WD Full Electric sedan can be charged in only 1.5 hours.

Only a prototype show car, the course of automotive propulsion technology could see a vehicle similar to the Brabus High Performance 4WD Full Electric wetting performance appetites soon.

PM Lifestyle/UTI Prepped Hyundai Veloster to Rock SEMA Show

Back in the 1980s, when the Hyundai Pony and Stellar gave North American audiences a negative sense of vehicle engineering, few would have expected the South Korean company would be a participant at a trendy automotive aftermarket accessories show. Evolving drastically into a producer of desirable automobiles, Hyundai’s 2011 presence at the 2011 SEMA Show in Las Vegas captures the changed auto company now basking in their efforts to improve a poor first impression on Americans. Joining customized cars will be at least two modified examples of the all-new Hyundai Veloster. One of the Hyundai SEMA show cars will be the PM Lifestyle Veloster.

Created through the cooperation of media company PM Lifestyle and the Universal Technical Institute, Hyundai’s three-door sport compact enjoys heavy accessorizing in time for the 2011 major exhibition. HPP Richard Petty Superbird

You might as well file this under “This is why we cannot have nice things.” Seriously. Who on Earth would buy something like this? The short answer to that is a guy by the name of Gordon Heidacker who runs this outfit in Madison Heights, Michigan called Heide Performance Products, or HPP. Before Heidacker decided that what the world really needed was an expensive prop from an as-yet-uncommissioned Joe Dirt sequel, he was involved in the development of the Dodge Viper and Plymouth Prowler and Chrysler’s racing and performance programs.

Being “involved” in the development of the Viper and Chrysler’s racing and performance programs (I won’t go into the Prowler) might be a mitigating factor, but it’s no excuse for this thing.

Sure, it’s been built up under the skin, so it’s not just a no-go showboat, but again, those are just mitigating factors. It’s got a blown 5.7L V8 under the hood that cranks out 575 at the wheel s (no torque figures) and that power gets to the ground via 6-Speed Manual transmission actuated by a pistol grip handle. Sure, I guess that gets you bonus points for the retro factor, but it also gets you bonus points for the trailer park factor, so those cancel each other out. The car has been dropped three inches and rides on a K&W suspension, and is also fitted with 20×8.5-inch wheels in front and 20x10s in back. Oh, and how much does this cost? MSRP: $16,395 base + car. That’s $16K in addition to the cost of your new Challenger, or around $80,000 all in.

As near as I can figure out, this doesn’t have anything to do with Richard Petty or Petty Racing Enterprises other than the thing being painted Petty Electric Blue, so it’s sort of like half an insult to the Randleman crew.

Now, there’s no point to going into detail on the original, all conquering Superbirds of yore. If you’re reading this, then you know what they are and what they accomplished. You probably also know that original Superbirds are fetching near-seven-figures at various auctions. So, you can see the “logic” in someone with a spare $80K but not $800K and a near total lack of taste buying something like this. The supply-side of that equation also means you can see the “logic” behind Gordon Heidacker and Heide Performance Products building the thing.

But, money is just a reason, and not an excuse. Turning old rusted out B-body Roadrunners into Superbirds is something I can understand (if not completely condone). And I can also get behind the aftermarket for the new Challengers as well, but this is just bad. And I don’t mean bad in a metaphorical or ethical sense, I mean bad in an aesthetic sense.

From all most any angle this aftermarket kit-job looks oddly proportioned and forced. It’s ungainly and it looks like one too many times in one too many design reviews (I know, implying that there was a review process involved is frightening, isn’t it) someone, probably Mr. Heidacker said something along the lines of, “I don’t care, just put the frickin’ wing/nose/fake scoops on it!”

Ah well … free country, your money and all those other things apply. The only truly good thing about this car is that it will make it easier to spot the idiots from a greater distance.

Merdad Releases Tuned MP4-12C

The McLaren MP4-12C went into production this year, after a long development program that set some of the world’s top exotics in its sights. If there was one criticism we’ve heard lobbed at the car, it has been that its styling is perhaps too sedate for its price tag. We like the MP4-12C’s smooth lines, but for those who want a bit more drama British tuner Merdad has taken to modifying the MP4-12C. The result is the Merdad Mehron GT.

What easy way can you make a super car look more dramatic? Why by adding more scoops, of course! The Mehron GT’s front fascia is completely redesigned, with intakes that are now larger and split between each side of the vehicle. The front bumper drops down closer to the tarmac for a more substantial, lowered (the suspension likely gets lowered as well) look.

The body kit protrudes out from the front fenders on the sides, creating a lip for air inlets next to each headlight. If you opt for them, the hood also receives strakes leading to small intakes, of dubious functional value. Moving to the side, the split vents for engine air are replaced with Merdad opting instead for a deep new one. The rear end gets a redesigned bumper as well, with expansive use of carbon fiber elements.

Merdad didn’t give us a press release, so there are no more details available than exterior changes at the moment. That means engine specifications will have to wait. It is possible (but unlikely) there will just be a body kit available for interested customers.

It all depends whether or not Merdad is planning to offer the changes as aftermarket modifications to existing McLaren vehicles or the Mehron GT as a turn-key unit. Frankfurt To See Three New Abarth Specials

Okay y’all, her we go again: Abarth tuner of all things small and Fiat will be rolling out three new specials for the upcoming Frankfurt show. To get the un-anointed up to speed, Abarth is to Fiat, the way John Cooper is to Mini, AMG is to Mercedes or Sox & Martin were to Mopar. In other words, they are the official, unofficial company go fast guys.

And Abarth, just like every other European automaker out there, is not going to let the Frankfurt Auto Show go by without something impressive to show. And, in the Turin tuners corner, there will be not one, but three new rides to gawk at.

Abarth seems to think that their 695 Tributo Ferrari version of the everso cute (and in the case of the 695 Tributo Ferrari, everso fast) 500 wasn’t good enough, so they’re upping the performance game. And that right there is why I pay so much attention to Abarth: Fast is never fast enough for them. Anyway, even though the 695 Tributo Ferrari is the fastest 500 to date, they will be showing a further refined version dubbed the 695 Competizione. Motivated by the same 180-horsepower 1.4-liter 16-valve turbo four found in the Tributo, the 695 Competizione also features a paddle-shift transmission (hot!), 17-inch alloys and Brembo brakes that are found in the Ferrari edition. The Competizione does ditches the Ferrari logos and bridges the gap to the track special Assetto Corsa, in a more streetable package.

Number two of three Abarth Specials will be the 500 Cabrio Italia. This special 500 is being presented to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Italian unification. This whole 150th anniversary thing is sort of like their Bicentennial, only much more puzzling since Italy has been around since Romulus and Remus … but getting into the details of Italian political “structure” would take a lot more room than I have at my disposal, or a lot more patience than any of you have. At any rate, the 150th anniversary is a big deal, so this special 500 gets a special blue paint job with a folding roof panel, a 160-horsepower turbo four with an overboost function and five-speed manual. No, I have no clear idea what an ” overboost function” is, but it sounds like fun, doesn’t it?

And the final Abarth triplet for Frankfurt 2011 is the Punto SuperSport. The Punto is sort of Fiat’s answer to the VW’s Golf or Ford’s Fiesta. Fiat had already produced a hot rod version of the Punto, called the EsseEsse, but the Punto SuperSport takes the existing to new extremes with a 180-horsepower 1.4-liter MultiJet engine, a Koni suspension package and tricked out interior with Sabelt buckets and Jaeger instruments. Nice, huh?

Sadly, no word that any of these will be making it across the pond, but they probably won’t. Which is sad, since Fiat owns Chrysler, and it looks like not only the cross-contamination is happening but Fiat 500s are here already (hell, I just saw two over the weekend).

No, there’s not that big of a market over here for things like Puntos, but I would bet that there are more than enough gearheads out there that would love to get their mitts on a 500 with a 180-horsepower 1.4-liter 16-valve turbo four, paddle-shift transmission, 17-inch alloys and Brembo brakes.

I know I would.

Built as a personification of limitless automotive expression, the supercar is an alluring creation built to encapsulate the finest engineering and technology. STaSIS Audi R8 V-10 Challenge Extreme Edition

Born on a V-10 powered Audi R8, West Virginia performance house STaSIS Engineering has turned the already feisty German supercar into a vehicle that can run circles around the Audi rings. A vehicle first presented at the 2010 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, the STaSIS Audi R8 5.2 Challenge Extreme Edition tests the widest boundaries for reengineering the mid-engined two-seater. Outfitted with a height adjustable suspension, Alcon brakes and forged 20-inch ultra-lightweight aluminum wheels, the STaSIS Audi R8 V-10 Challenge Extreme Edition vehicle attractive touches are all functional.

The most substantial improvement to the Audi R8 V-10 has major performance tweaks added to the 5.2 liter ten-cylinder powerplant. BMW Alpina B7 BiTurbo

Alpina’s business relationship with BMW started in the 1970s when the eventual car manufacturer operated as a sports car race team. Fielding the BMW 3.0 CSL in competition, Alpina brought their collaboration with BMW to the streets in the 1980s.

While the BMW M division attracts the most attention among enthusiasts, the Alpina B7 BiTurbo supplements the absence of BMW 7 Series version in the M line-up. An automatic limited-slip differential insures Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires rotate the stylish 19-inch forged alloy wheels. While official performance figures have yet to be released on this 2012 model vehicle, the RUF RGT-8 has a forecasted top speed of 205 miles per hour.

The two-seat interior features a securing protection of a roll-cage structure. Auto racing-inspired interior touches; RUF has also conducted the honoured tradition of weight-savings through the application of aluminum door panels and a carbon fiber rear engine cover.

While the architecture of the RUF RGT-8 is clearly identified with the Porsche 911, RUF Automotive acknowledges themselves as a small auto manufacturer distinct from the German sports car company’s image.

Edo Competition LP750

Outfitting a wide range of vehicles, Edo Competition has modified BMW M5 Touring wagons, Porsche 997s and even Maserati MC12 supercars. From the Lamborghini Murcielago, the Edo Competition LP750 was created this past February. Meant to be the fastest Lamborghini Murcielago ever, the Edo Competition LP750 is shaped with specially-contoured aerodynamic panels. A redesigned rear spoiler and ultra lightweight alloy wheels are worn on the Edo Competition LP750 providing a stylish extension of Lamborghini performance.

Speaking of performance, the Edo Competition LP750 receives a healthy power boost to the 6.5 liter V-12 engine. Totalling 750 horsepower, the special Lamborghini supercar presented by Edo Competition soars from 0 to 60 miles per hour in only 3.1 seconds. The Edo Competition LP750 takes just 24.5 seconds for a rush to 186 miles per hour from a standing stop.

As the Aventador replaces the Lamborghini Murcielago as the Italian sports car builder’s flagship, it only seems reasonable to believe an after-factory preparation of the new generation supercar is only a matter of months away.

Brabus 700 BiTurbo

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG immediately impressed with its late 2010 introduction as a spiritual recreation of the 1955 SL300 Gull Wing. The first Mercedes-Benz production vehicle to originate from the AMG speed lab, the supercar arrived with prime performance attributes. Despite the stock SLS AMG’s 563 horsepower and a 197-mile per hour top speed, aftermarket companies have found ways to further dress up the Mercedes-Benz supercar. Long-time Mercedes-Benz outfitter Brabus was one company that quickly issued their exploration of the SLS AMG peak performance.

Lifting horsepower to 700 horsepower by adding a twin-turbocharger system to the 6.3 liter V-8 engine, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is turned into the Brabus 700 BiTurbo. While the stock SLS AMG’s 0 to 60 mile per hour acceleration of 3.7 seconds remains largely unchanged, the Brabus 700 BiTurbo’s enhancements come at the top end. Unlimited top speed potential of 700 horsepower allows this Brabus supercar to sail up to 213 miles per hour.

Besides the advantages of raw horsepower, the Brabus 700 BiTurbo supercar is suited for a dramatic motoring experience. Possessing a special high performance exhaust featuring a pneumatic flap, the driver can adjust the engine note for a more civilized purr or a full grunt roar. The Brabus 700 BiTurbo can also be opted with the WIDESTAR body conversion kit adding additional genuine carbon fiber pieces on the exterior and interior.

Priced at the equivalent of $349,690 in US money, the Brabus 700 BiTurbo is a rocket ride left affordable to only a few land-based pilots.

AMG Looks Back At 40 Great Years

Before AMG was a performance package you could order for seemingly every model Benz that rolls of the line (and by the by, where’s my AMG Unimog?) they actually race cars for the great German firm. Not only that, they did race cars with some of the most unlikely of starting points. That all began 40 years ago when Aufrecht, Melcher and Großaspach, (Aufrecht’s birthplace), the founders of AMG had a go at race prepping a 1971 300 SEL 6.3 sedan and racing it at the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps.

Yes, the 300 SEL 6.3 is the big, long four door sedan that bank presidents use to get from Munich to Hamburg, not something you’d expect to see on a race track, and certainly not on a track as serious as Spa, and certainly not for 24 hours.

But AMG was, and still is, damn serious about this performance stuff, so the then-four-year-old firm tore into Merc’s luxo-barge like Teutonic versions of Smokey Yunick. Sure, the 300 SEL 6.3 was Germany’s fastest production sedan, but it was also, shall we say, a bit portly and down on power. So AMG bumped the displacement to 6.8 liters and twisted the engine to crank out 428 horsepower and a stump-puling 448 pound-feet of torque. Weight was cut by using aluminum doors, which dropped the burden down to 3,637 pounds, versus the original 41,000 long tons … oh wait, that was the displacement of the Bismarck, my mistake. Let’s just say they cut it down by a bunch. Top speed: 164 mph. Not bad for something the weight of a panzer tank.

Bottom line from all those years ago in Belgium? The big Benz blew the doors off nearly everything else on the track and finished second, which immediately established AMG’s credibility as a tuner.

This coming weekend, Black Falcon racing along with AMG will pay tribute to the original racer when they compete again at Spa in a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 wearing original matching livery to the old machine. Making things even more of a time warp is the fact that one of the three drivers will be Kenneth Heyer, son of Hans Heyer who was at the wheel of that legendary AMG sedan four decades ago. Cool, right?

“Forty years after our class victory and second overall place, I think it is a great idea to enter the Spa-Francorchamps race with the SLS AMG GT3 in the same look as ‘my’ 300 SEL. Naturally I wish the Black Falcon team and my son Kenneth every success – and will be delighted if he wins at least second place!” Hans Heyer said in a statement.

The AMG SLS, aka the new “Gullwing”, is a natural for racing, given its atrocious power and inspirational handling, if not it’s featherweight tipping of the scales. So you won’t be seeing just the Black Falcon SLS on the grid, it will also be joined seven other new Gullwings.

The original big AMG competed in a number of endurance races in 1971 and ‘72, even with its four doors, power steering, air suspension, carpet on the floors and wood on the dash, but was retired in 1973. A change in the rules cut displacement down to 5.0 liters, making the big sedan obsolete. AMG sold the car to French conglomerate Matra (of all people), which used it for high-speed tests of aircraft tires. After that, the 300 SEL 6.3 disappeared into the mists of time, and today, no one knows what became of the car. The racer shown here is a replica AMG built in 2006.

Fiat 500 Abarth To Debut In LA

Fiat’s reentry into the American automotive market continues apace. Even though Alfa is delayed (again) Fiat’s diminutive 500 is already here, in both coupe and convertible form. And even better news for the performance minded among us gearheads is that the Abarth addition of the toaster-sized 500 will be rolling out in the City of The Angels.

Fiat, trying to be everso hip, made the announcement via twitter that its U.S. spec 500 Abarth performance model will take a bow before the klieg lights at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show this coming November.

Sure, we knew the Abarth variant was coming anyway, but confirmation like this is still nice to have. The 500 is aimed squarely at BMW’s Mini line of sub-compacts (and, by extension, the upcoming Scion iQ), so, if Mini gets the John Cooper Works performance package, then Fiat better have something to answer with in that department as well.

Enter the Abarth package. Of course Fiat would go with the venerable and respected Turin tuning firm of Abarth in much the same way that Mini going with John Cooper’s outfit made sense. Both firms, back in the 60s, took unassuming commuter cars and turned them into full-blown track terrors. Abarth, with the original 500 and Cooper with the original Mini. Abarth took the first 500 and doubled the horsepower output (which is sort of damning with faint praise, since the original 500′s plant put out something frighteningly low like 32 ponies) and made it into a terror in its class. And Cooper turned the original Mini into one of the most successful and well remembered rally cars of all time.

Fast forward 45 or 50 years, and here we go again.

Although we here in the good ol’ U. S. of A. won’t get a lot of the real cool goodies, like the sequential semi-auto gearbox (sniff-sniff), we will get the more powerful 1.4-liter turbo with Multiair technology that cranks out around 175 horsepower. Which is not bad for a car as small and light as the 500.

Yes, yes I know that’s not as much as the JCW package on the Mini puts to the tarmac, but then again, the 500 weighs a lot less – as in the order of hundreds of pounds. And why is it, by the way, that Germans still can’t figure out how to make something lightweight? Seriously, they’ve been doing this ‘more is more’ stuff since the 30s, near as I can tell.

No doubt the Abarth 500 will get some snazzy graphics to set it apart from its lesser brethren, but most likely they won’t be as over the top as what you see here. I believe these shots are from a Continental Tire event from a while back, and Conti did the graphics treatment.

And even though all this is good news (funner small hot rods to blast around urban environments in), it is still news that is, by and large, happening before the event, so to speak. Look, let me just put it this way: I would be all over the new 500 and especially the 500 Abarth except for two things (one minor and one major), no semi-auto box and reliability.

The 500 is an unknown quantity on these shores. Sure, the little guys have been running rampant all over Europe for three or four years now, but that’s cold comfort to me. Look at Citroens as an example. Huge seller in France, seemingly indestructible on punishing rally stages … but you get them over here, and they last about as long as a tissue in a flu ward. And Fiat, less face facts, doesn’t have the most stellar of reputations when it comes to reliability. So whoever jumps in first is going to be a fairly brave soul in some ways (or someone who’s rich and just wants to get “that cute little car” for his second trophy wife).

Fiat both knows that sad fact, and they also know something else: They have to make it in America this time round. Why? Because they own Chrysler now, and they are in the U.S. to stay AND they’re going to be bringing in a bunch of Fiat brands to our shores under the Chrysler banner (e.g. Lancias).

So, not only do we have some interesting cars from Fiat heading out way, we also seem to have the full might and backing of one of the worlds largest carmakers putting their full weight behind it. Now if they’d just put that semi-auto box in the little guy …

Hennesseey Introduces Cadillac CTS-V V1000 Twin-Turbo

Sometimes, enough is just never enough. To most, 550 horsepower in the Cadillac CTS-V Coupe is considered extremely fast. Hennessey Automotive begs to differ though, always pushing the boundaries of automotive insanity. But hey, insanity can be a lot of fun huh? Especially on a track.

Now, the company is releasing a new Cadillac Hennessey V1000 Twin Turbo CTS-V Coupe. This car comes on the heels of V700 upgrade that was previously introduced. The V1000 takes that up a notch to an eye-popping 1,000 horsepower. Talk about fast! The V-8 is 427 cubic inches in capacity, and as its name implies, is fed by twin turbochargers.

To make all that power, the LS7 V-8 has been beefed up with connecting rods and a crank made from forged steel, forged low-compression pistons, and ARP main studs and head bolts. When you’re pushing nearly double the amount of original horsepower though, changes must be made all around.

As such the manual transmission has been upgraded with a Centerforce Dual Friction Clutch and the automatic unit with a Performance Build & Torque Converter Upgrade. 0-60 arrives in 3.5 seconds, and the 1/4 mile in 10.9 at 136 mph. To bring the car to a halt, new 15-inch ceramic brakes have been fitted.

The exterior is more hunkered down and supercar-like, thanks to a lowered suspension (by 1 inch) and CarbonAero wide body kit. To save weight and make a change in appearance the CTS-V V1000 also gains front fenders, an extractor hood, rear diffuser and rear fended flares all made from carbon fiber.

General Motors test driver John Heinricy retuned the CTS-V’s standard Magnetic Ride Control (MRC) suspension. As a bonus, buyers of the car will get a day’s driving experience with Henricy. That will come at a steep price of entry, we’re sure. Only 12 copies of the V1000 are slated to be built – at a price yet to be announced. Stay tuned.

Street Legal Bumper Cars – You Can License Anything These Days

Automoblog main man Chris sent me an interesting email over the weekend. I looked at the pictures, and my first thought was of a guy who had a motorized barstool at a hot rod run I attended once, long ago. A non-gearhead friend of mine asked, in total shock, “Can you motorize something like that?”

“Of course! You can put a motor in anything!” How could I say anything else? You inhabit this machine world long enough, and that becomes far too apparent. Motorized barstools seemed to be just the beginning. Take a look at what some crazies in California have accomplished: Motorized, wheeled bumper cars. And, judging by the license plates, the Golden State has no problem licensing them for use on the public roadways.

On the one hand, the (un-attributed) accompanying text states that ” … a couple have been measured as capable of 160 MPH, which is terrifyingly fast in machines with such a short wheelbase.” Which is indeed terrifying, but not all that unthinkable, given that the bumper cars you see here are motivated by four cylinder Honda or Kawasaki 750s. The move to JDM plants was provoked by the original engines, two cylinder Harley Davidsons, ” … rattled like heck because of the two cylinder vibration … ” according to someone referred to simply as “Tom”.

We can only surmise that “Tom” is the mater, er, “mind” behind this craziness. There are allusions in the email that the bumper cars were recovered from some place called the Long Beach Pike amusement park located “in the outskirts of San Diego” and that “Tom” felt the old, disused bumper cars “needed a more dignified end than the trash heap.” On that I can agree. I’m a firm believer in keeping things based on their aesthetic value alone. If they have some artistic, cultural or motivational value, then so much the better.

I’m not really troubled by that, or even the (alarmingly successful) fact that they got license plates hung on them. That’s great. That’s part of the fine hot rod tradition that makes being an American gearhead so, well, I’ll go with unique and special, yeah, unique and special, that’s it.

What troubles me is the “engineering” that I can make out from the supplied photos. The craftsmanship looks top notch, and not just the body and paint, but the chassis tubes and shock and brake installs look rather well done. And yes, I’ll interject that simply adding brakes onto these guys gives me a certain amount of comfort. It shows that this “Tom” fellow is only certifiable, and not suicidal.

Anyway, is it just me, or does the roll-center and the center of gravity seem a tad high for something that has ” … been measured as capable of 160 MPH?” Sure, sure, that’s probably in a straight line, but I’d be hesitant to whip a quick u-ee in one of these guys doing 16 MPH, let alone something much faster. And although those brakes do seem rather nicely done, I’m sure that standing on the loud pedal for a block, whoa-ing one of these little critter up and hanging a 90 degree left would be an iffy proposition.

Then again, that is, in a lot of ways, the essence of hot rodding. Ever driven or ridden along in the passenger seat of a blown big block T Bucket? I have. And they are not the most directionally stable modes of transportation you can get. But that, as we all know, is what makes it “fun”.

And I bet, when all is said and done, that driving one of these down to the cruise in or swap meet or that appointment with your clinical psychologist is a whole lot of fun. I just wish I could have been at the DMV when “Tom” and his buddies brought these in to get them licensed.

edo competition Creates Dark Edition on BMW M5 Touring

Fans of the Bavarian auto company are currently celebrating the latest M iteration of the 5 Series on BMW’s F10 platform. Producing more factory horses than ever seen prior on the M5, the 560-horsepower BMW has improved engine output with a more compact powerplant. Dropping in a special TwinPower 4.4 liter, V-8 engine, BMW has set aside the once-mighty V-10 that delivered raw horsepower as a normally aspirated power unit. Though there will definitely be seekers to the newer, more efficient twin-turbocharged engine, favourites could be played for the now obsolete BMW M5 by cylinder counting enthusiasts.

As the BMW factory has upped the game for the new M5, influences outside of the Stuttgart will be giving the V-10 engined E60-type M5 another hurrah. Created out of the BMW M5 Touring (an estate wagon having never crossed the Atlantic Ocean from Europe), Germany’s edo competition brought light to the 2005 to 2010 model car with a host of modifications. Through a shining performance machine, edo competition defines their newest tuner vehicle as the BMW M5 Dark Edition.

Coated with a stunning but sinister black paint, edo competition accessorized the former M5 Touring’s exterior with a unique front and rear valance. On the wagon’s tailgate, a rear wing has been mounted along roof height. Completing the mysterious look, the BMW M5 Dark Edition receives black-painted 20-inch light alloy wheels.

Bringing the V-10 powerplant almost up to the 2012 BMW M5’s performance level, edo competition has rigged the BMW M5 Dark Edition with 555 horsepower. Only 5 horses shy of tying the new BMW car, the BMW M5 Dark Edition is 55 horsepower above the factory preparation of the 5-liter V-10 engine. Accompanied with 413 pounds-feet of torque, the V-10 engine’s newfound power boost comes from a recalibrated engine ECU, high-flow air filters and a performance exhaust system. With four chrome pipes accented by the rear skirt, the BMW M5 Dark Edition’s exhaust is funnelled out in aggression.

Translating the 555 horsepower generated from the V-10 engine, the edo competition’s BMW M5 Dark Edition track performance is sent through rear wheel drive. Rolling the 20-inch wheels on Dunlop tires, the 0 to 62 mile per hour acceleration times for the M5 Dark Edition is accomplished in 5 seconds flat. Half a second faster than the stock BMW M5, the edo competition-prepared Dark Edition is 5 seconds faster compared to the factory BMW accelerating from 62 to 124 miles per hour. Another electronic modification to the performance of the BMW M5 Dark Edition has the removal of the factory’s top speed limiter. Now completely unleashed, the edo competition-tuned, V-10 powered BMW M5 can storm up to 190 miles per hour

Already presented with a most suitable interior provided through the BMW M range, edo competition has used the finest carbon fiber and leather materials to make their Dark Edition a cut above the factory car.
