The five-seater XC60 was just released a few years ago, but the three-row XC90 has been on the market since 2002. With us nearing the end of 2011, that makes it almost ten years already – quite a long model run.

It is going to soldier on for a bit longer too, as a production model won’t bow until 2014. Ouch. We hope it will get some updates before then; it has remained remarkably similar of its model run. The XC90 has proved to be a successful product for Volvo, but it is beginning to fall behind the competition. For its next-generation model, Volvo has issued some renderings and sketches of what it could like.

They show a different direction in design than the swoopy style of the S60 and XC60, and more toward a utilitarian Volvo look. For instance, the front end shows definite hints from the Concept You sedan. Only one picture of the front end was released, while three were done for the back end. The front end design looks good we think, and it stands out clearly as a Volvo. Out back, we’d have to to go with the first (pictured above) of the three renderings. The second one is just odd and third is too bland and playing it safe.

What is really going to be interesting is the interior; Volvo has really pushed the envelope with Scandinavian interior design with its latest concepts. We can’t wait to see some of that starting to translate over into production models. And, of course we expect the next-generation to continue Volvo’s safety heritage with some new innovations in the field. Volvo has a goal for zero fatalities in it vehicles by 2020; a worthy endeavor. We imagine people-carrying crossovers like the XC90 will feature heavily as part of that goal.

Related posts:

Volvo Takes the Covers Off Concept Universe

Concept You Arrives, Indicates New Volvo Large Sedan

Breaking: Ford Might Sell Volvo

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Concept You Arrives, Indicates New Volvo Large Sedan

Car News

Frankfurt Motor Show

Volvo

Concept Universe

Concept You

Large Sedan

Volvo Concept Universe

Volvo Concept You

Volvo luxury sedan

The Chinese market is becoming increasingly important, and the reason is a no brainer: with over a billion people there, possibilities are endless. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

The Chinese market is becoming increasingly important, and the reason is a no brainer: with over a billion people there, possibilities are endless. Particularly for luxury automakers, who see a goldmine of potential. Volvo aims to tap into this, and sees a future for itself much more upmarket than the position it currently occupies. The S80 is the biggest sedan in the lineup, and it really doesn’t do heavy battle with segment leaders.

The Concept You is a look (like the Concept Universe that preceded it) at what Volvo’s new full-size sedan will look like, as well as an evolved design language. We thought Volvo was just starting off a swoopy new look with the Volvo XC60 and S60 sedan but that is being changed for a more simplistic, Scandinavian approach. On the Concept You, it works well. It isn’t much different than the Concept Universe, mostly details, but those changes are important.

The Concept You moves toward more production-like exterior details, ditching the odd-grille of the Concept Universe. It looks much better; upscale and fresh, yet still recognizably a Volvo. It still retains the circular hood and suicide doors, things we aren’t sure will make it to production.

Once again, Chief Executive Officer Stefan Jacoby comments that this isn’t just a pie-in-the-skie concept, saying: “Concept You gives you a good indication of what you can expect from our next large sedan….the blend of contemporary Scandinavian design, exquisite craftsmanship and intuitive technology will appeal to luxury car buyers all over the world.” Inside, the interior is airy, spacious and very Apple-like. Clutter is eliminated by the use of a large screen that makes up the entire center stack and dashboard.

When Volvo’s large sedan will be coming isn’t known for sure, but it is clear that Volvo intends to aggressively compete when it does arrive. If the Concept You comes out as impressively as the concept for a production vehicle, Volvo could really be a player in the segment.

Related posts:

Volvo Takes the Covers Off Concept Universe

Full-Size Volvo Not Moving Ahead

Volvo To Ditch Existing Engines For 3- and 4-Cylinders

Automoblog.net - src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

It was 50 years ago that a book authored by lawyer and public safety activist Ralph Nader caused people to observe the automobile as a risky piece of everyday life. Titled Unsafe at Any Speed, Nader’s book shined a light on various issues of vehicle safety including the rear-engined Chevrolet Corvair. Though the Corvair’s stability was actively disputed by the auto manufacturer and even in court, Ralph Nader did shine light on other aspect of unsafe automotive design practices. Since 1966, NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) has committed itself to assure automotive safety standards would be enacted and policed.

For those involved in a serious car accident, survival of all is the desired outcome. According to a 2009 Traffic Safety Facts Annual Report, the measures to protect road users appears to be making a massive impact on what has been a very mobile public in the United States. In 1980, there was an all-time high total of 51,091 deaths measured in United States car crashes leading to a fatality rate of 35.16 per 100,000 motorists. In 2008, the fatality had dropped by almost 28 percent even while there are 50,000,000 more licensed drivers on the roadways compared to 1980.

While the survivability rates in United States car crashes allows more and more individuals to handle post-collision such as a compensation calculator, the loss of lives is still a solid reason why the NHTSA has continued to press safety for vehicles and roadway. Already successfully pushing the mandate for electronically stability control to be fitted to all production vehicles, the NHTSA is now assessing other electronic technologies. Testing the effectiveness of lane departure and other crash detection assist systems, the newest line of vehicle occupant protection is going to involve more active roles for computer-aided accident avoidance.

Lane migration and crash avoidance systems are becoming the latest step forward in on-board, high-tech automobile safety. One of the more monumental systems introduced to production is was the Full Auto Brake system available on the Volvo S60. The NHTSA will be studying the effectiveness of this or similar collision avoidance systems in order to create standards and testing criteria which can be used to evaluate future vehicles.

With 53 percent of fatal car accidents involving impact with another vehicle, automotive engineers and computer technologists realize the newest layer in accident avoidance is to educate the cars. Explored by many auto manufacturers like the Ford Motor Company, vehicle to vehicle communication technology expands electronic assist programs to effectively react to each other. Convening automotive and transportation minds in two California events almost two months ago, Ford exhibited vehicle communication technology using in-car Wi-Fi to relay driving information. Having the ability of perhaps relieving traffic congestion and better optimization of fuel consumption, a Wi-Fi enabled vehicle communication system is also has potentially positive implications for safer roads.

Allowing vehicles to notify following vehicles of trouble areas, car-to-car communication solutions gives vehicles a chance to not just react but anticipate changes or hazards one the approaching roads. Ford and the NHTSA is also bullish on the usage of active vehicle communications to greatly reduce drunk driving (an impairment connected to a recorded 32 percent of all traffic fatalities in 2009) In a 2010 report published by the NHTSA, vehicle communication could prevent up to 81 percent of impaired driving. Through further research by the NHTSA, the agency will study how vehicle communications could be structured safely and effectively on future roads.

With no amount of whiplash compensation around to overcome the shocking and horrible memories of a major traffic accident where injury is involved, the work of auto manufacturers and the NHTSA has insured fewer of those collisions ending in fatality. Continuing work in the arena of safety will work assuring more people will realize the adage “the only good accident is an accident that never happened.”

Information source: Ford Motor Company, NHTSA

Related posts:

US Government Propose New Auto Safety Laws After Toyota Recalls

Laser Beams into Automotive Lighting Future

Auto History’s Biggest Safety Feature Follies

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Family Road Trip Cars of Summer 2011

Car News

Chevy

Chrysler

Dodge

Ford

GM

List

Mazda

Mercedes-Benz

Misc

Volvo

2011 cars

car list

Chevrolet Traverse

crossover

Dodge Grand Caravan

family car

Ford Flex

Mazda5

minivan

Road Trip

vacation trip

Volvo V50

wagon

A phenomenon created when major road networks were formulated across North America in the 1950s, the summer family automobile trip was inaugurated. Originally identified as a time when a large station wagon was loaded up with belongings, the trip in route to a landmark or camping ground for some family memories. In the 1980s, minivans all but destroyed the station wagon providing more interior space and an affordable price. In the latest evolution of the family hauler, the sport utility or crossover vehicles demonstrate both brawn on the exterior and user-friendly spaciousness on the inside cabin. Providing expanded capability over other vehicles (at least giving the illusion of increased road toughness), the crossover is the lead body style found cruising down the highway with a trailer and a full roof rack.

Beyond the type of automobile, a technological evolution through the past decade is potentially changing the attitude of the multiple-hour journey. Better fuel economy in these larger family utility vehicles allows the fuel pump shock to the ever-rising prices to be somewhat moderated. Satellite radio, MP3 capability, multi-zone climate control and the back seat DVD-based entertainment console has the ability of deeply reducing boredom. Electronic navigation systems replace the passenger-seated spouse’s objection to driving direction; therefore averting the normal holiday-bred bickering that the children will remember for years to come.

For 2011, the following set of six family adventure vehicles shows varying ways to partake the nation’s highways.

Dodge Grand Caravan

For over 27 years, Chrysler has championed the minivan for the American driving public. Even as other auto manufacturers have come and gone from the segment, the Dodge Grand Caravan remains a leading transportation choice for the typical family. In 2011, the Dodge Grand Caravan was given revitalization with refreshed interior and exterior design. For under $30,000, Quad headlights, multi-zone climate control, power windows and remote keyless entry delight Grand Caravan buyers as basic vehicle equipment. One of three Media Center infotainment systems is offered on the 2011 Dodge Grand Caravan including an optional high-end model featuring GPS navigation and a 30-gigabyte hard drive. Known as the Media Center 730N, the unit is conducted by a 6.5-inch touchscreen. Earning a much-needed revision in 2011, the Dodge Grand Caravan overcomes a long-time lethargic 0 to 60 mile per hour acceleration plaguing minivans. Recipient of Chrysler’s new 283 horsepower Pentastar V-6 engine, a smooth shifting 6-speed automatic transaxle gives the 7-passenger minivan pep modern crossover buyers would envy.

Mercedes-Benz R-Class

Alright, a Mercedes-Benz as a family hauler might be a little more than the Joneses would ever expect. Tipping over the $50,000 mark, the Mercedes-Benz R-Class does employ more than just the German brand’s bravado. Providing seating for six or seven passengers, the minimum cargo availability is 19.4 cubic feet. As a luxury utility vehicle, the Mercedes -Benz R-Class delivers with high-tech thrills. An optional rear seat entertainment system featuring two front headrest-mounted, LCD screens and a pair of wireless headphones are suited for watching DVD movies or playing video games. Mercedes-Benz R-Class buyers are also likely to be lured to a pair of Premium packages that offer a bundle of high-tech comfort goodies including a 40-gigabyte hard drive, power liftgate and harman/kardon LOGIC7 surround sound speaker system. Equipment packages which would certainly be appreciated on long family outings, these Premium packages carry a $4,000 price tag. Coming as gasoline or diesel powered, the R-Class powerplant choices is the 268 horsepower, 3.5 liter V-6 and the 3-liter BlueTEC diesel six-cylinder. With BlueTEC being clean diesel technology, the R-Class is able to commute up to 24 miles per gallon in highway driving. All models of the R-Class arrive standard equipped with 4Matic all-wheel drive control including an electronic stability program as well as Trailer Stability Assist.

Chevrolet Traverse

Exiting the station wagon segment officially when they retired the Caprice, leaving the minivan category a few years back, Chevrolet has banked heavily on more truck-like vehicles attracting American families. The Chevrolet Traverse is a large crossover created after a period that some would argue as over-dependence on their large sport utility vehicle; almost leading to the brand’s fatal downfall. Proving that large sport utility vehicle capability can be merged with car-like driving manners, the Traverse became a hit for Chevrolet since introduction in the 2009 model year. Cruise control, 6-speaker sound system and storage space in a well-designed center console as well as under the floor makes the base LS of the Chevrolet Traverse a very handy family hauler. Beyond the standard feature list, one of the Traverse’s most compelling items for parents’ relaxation is one of two rear seat entertainment systems. One entertainment system provides dual DVD players would will double the chances that children will overcome boredom. Powered by just a V-6 engine, this 288 horsepower power unit propels not only the crossover’s more than 4,700 pound of curb weight but has power to spare for 5,200 pounds of trailing pulling capacity.

Mazda5

Not a hatchback but not quite a minivan, the 2012 Mazda5 is an all-new vehicle from a Japanese manufacturer excelling with out-of-the-box thinking for family transportation. The Mazda5 everyday utility encompasses itself in youthful styling demonstrated through Mazda’s recent concept vehicles. Existing within only 180.5 inches of total length, a clever seating allows up to six occupants to travel. With second row chairs instead of a typical bench seat, there will no longer be a fight between siblings over rear seat territory. Placing the small utility vehicle above many contending for family commuting honours, the Mazda5′s ace is its price starting under $20,000. For the base price of the 2012 Mazda5 Sport model, the vehicle includes power windows, remote keyless entry, MP3 stereo system and automatic climate control. For a $23,875 price, the Mazda5 Grand Touring comes well loaded with a 6-disc CD changer and power sliding moonroof.

Ford Flex

Appearing extremely truck-like on a platform that also created the Taurus sedan; the Ford Flex’s box-like exterior allows optimum interior space to the achievable. Rated for up to seven passengers, the Flex interior can be maximized to 83.2 cubic feet (more room than the current Ford Explorer). However, for family outings where the rear seats will need to be available, there is a minimum cargo room of 20 cubic feet presented when all three rows of seats are in use. All Ford Flex models also come with Ford MyKey, air conditioning with rear control and AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control. An optional refrigerated compartment within the second row seating and PowerFold third row seats will be the delight of travel plans. The Heavily equipped Limited and Titanium offer a standard 390-watt, 12-speaker Sony sound system. A 262 horsepower 3.5 liter V-6 and the 355 horsepower EcoBoost 3.5 liter twin-turbo powers the 2011 Flex. A Class 3 towing package is optional allowing a maximum trailer hauling weight of 4,500 pounds.

Volvo V50

One of the few carmakers to weather the whole North American minivan craze with a wagon in their line-up, Swedish brand Volvo found a few faithful to the original car-based utility. Though Volvo has withdrawn their long-time V70 model from the market, the company has supplemented the demand for an extra capacity car through the S40-based Volvo V50. Though the V50 wagon has gone since 2004 without a major exterior redesign, there is a timelessness to the Volvo styling DNA that keeps the Swedish products contemporary. The low 57.4-inch overall height of the Volvo V50 makes the vehicle a balanced handler as well as useful for attaching loads on the roof. Inside of the Volvo V50, the five-passenger cabin features up to 62.6 cubic feet of cargo space. Power seats, air conditioning and HD Radio are comfort items found inside of all 2011 Volvo V50 models. A premium surround sound speaker arrangement and power glass sunroof is a few options available to enhance the V50 wagon. In the United States, the Volvo V50 is powered solely by the top performing, turbocharged, five-cylinder 2.5 liter engine generating 227 horsepower. Living up to Volvo’s safety reputation, the V50 includes standard six airbags as well as the brand’s Dynamic Stability and Traction Control.

Information and photo Source: Chrysler Group, Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Mazda, Mercedes Benz USA, Volvo

Related posts:

First-Year Cars that Rocked 2011

Win a Five-Day VIP Trip for Two to SEMA 2011 in Las Vegas

Chevy Traverse Named SEAMO 2009 Family Car of the Year

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Volvo Introduces S80 Executive and V70 R-Design Packages

Car News

Volvo

R-Design

S80

S80 Executive

V70

V70 R-Design

Volvo S80

Volvo S80 Executive

Volvo V70

Volvo V70 R-Design

Volvo has been in the spotlight often recently. The news has primarily centered around its plans for a future full-size luxury sedan flagship. There have been varying reports that have surfaced and official from Volvo by way of Chief Executive Officer Stefan Jacoby.

The Concept Universe seemingly offered a preview of what a new sedan could look like, but apparently a new sedan isn’t part of the company’s short or long term plans.

What is a part of the company’s plans though is an expanded lineup that aims to be more premium, focusing on growth around the world in important markets like China. Volvo’s more premium aspirations are being evidenced by a new S80 Executive edition, while the V70 adds a sporty R-Design package.

The S80 is Volvo’s flagship model, and the Executive package aims to up the ante. Certainly in the interior we see that happening. The Executive model helps to up the pizazz, and we like the results.

The S80 Executive starts off with a new leather covered dash in your color of espresso brown or off black. The leather-covered dash is a first for any Volvo, and the Executive takes things a step further with leather-covered door panels as well.

Other luxury touches the Executive adds are ventilated leather seats with massaging function, a new (very oddly placed) analog clock and an aluminum center console storage cover. We hope the changes are evidence of new, more luxury-oriented approach at Volvo. Also, an option offered by Volvo with the S80 Executive is a refrigerator in the rear seat that includes a set of Swedish crystal glasses.

The V70 R-Design follows a similar pattern to other R-Design models, with a redesigned body kit, LED turn signals in the mirrors, unique wheels and “silk metal” accents. The V70 R-Design’s interior is black and ditches wood trim for a black and silver motif. Check out our gallery below to check out the changes included in Volvo’s latest trim packages.
<a Full-size luxury sedans are an important segment in China.

With that, we expected production of a full-size model to be a pretty much be a done deal. Volvo has gone back and forth about this publicly, but the Concept Universe might be an indication that its mind has been made up.

Accompanying the car’s press release was a quote from Volvo’s President Chief Executive Officer Stefan Jacoby saying: “The Concept Universe offers the world a sneak preview of what people can expect from our next top-of-the-line sedan.” Now, new comments by Jacoby, reported by Automotive News, seem to conflict with that.

“It is too early to enter the S-class-size market,” Jacoby said. “We are concentrating with our new products on our core segments.”

Apparently, Jacoby thinks the Volvo brand isn’t yet ready for a full-size flagship. We would be inclined to agree, as the company needs to do more to lay a foundation with mainstream models. Volvo was bought by Chinese automaker Geely last year for $1.7 billion. Its chairman, Li Shufu is reportedly eager to push Volvo upmarket to better compete in the luxury segment.

Given its ownership by Geely, Volvo is going to put a particular emphasis on the Chinese market over the next few years. Volvo has set a goal for 200,000 units a year by 2015, and to help achieve that is building a plant in Chengdu, China that is set to open in 2013.

Given the styling of the Concept Universe, we think the company might have a little more work to do in the design department as well. Reaction to the car could also have something to do with the company’s apparent backtracking – there are many variables.

While China is a key part of Volvo’s bigger aspirations, a production full-size sedan doesn’t appear to be in the cards – for now.

Related posts:

Concept You Arrives, Indicates New Volvo Large Sedan

Volvo Takes the Covers Off Concept Universe

Volvo Introduces S80 Executive and V70 R-Design Packages

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Volvo Takes the Covers Off Concept Universe

Car News

Concept Cars

Volvo

Concept Universe

Volvo Concept Universe

Volvo’s new owners Geely have stated their plans to increase Volvo’s reach around the world. This includes taking Volvo upmarket to a place it hasn’t really competed in. Volvo traditionally didn’t go head-to-head with manufacturers like BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

The company would like to change that though, as with a higher status comes the ability to charge higher prices.

Moving upmarket is also a must for the Chinese market, as it is a luxury offerings. For manufacturers looking to get in on the luxury game, a big luxury sedan is a must. Volvo is showing off its Concept Universe to preview what such a model could like. Curiously, it is taking place right near the Shanghai Motor Show, but is not a part of the show as it will not be making an appearance there.

The Concept Universe ditches the swoopy design theme of the XC60 Crossover and S60 sedan for a more boxy look. It’s clear the aim is to recall the boxy look of past Volvos in order to create a defining design theme.

We aren’t so sure how it works in practice. From some angles it looks pretty good, and others disjointed. The rear also doesn’t seem to quite integrate with the front design, as it appears similar to the Fisker Karma. Concepts tend to look better than their production counterparts, so this doesn’t bode too well for Volvo.

The Concept Universe, as evidenced by its name, is clearly is a design study. It is meant to be uniquely Scandinavian in approach. In the future, Volvo says it aims to be the brand that “best interprets what buyers of modern luxury cars want.”

Volvo designer Peter Horbury is responsible for the design of the car. Describing the car he say “(it is) just like fine luxury goods, this design feels handcrafted and durable enough to stand the test of time….we will compete with the best with our special kind of Scandinavian Design. It is unmatched in performance and technology, but without superficiality or complication.”

It’s unclear how many elements from this car will be making it to production, but this car shows the way forward for Volvo. “The Concept Universe offers the world a sneak preview of what people can expect from our next top-of-the-line sedan,” says Stefan Jacoby, President and CEO of Volvo Car Corporation.

Well, here you have it – a large sedan is coming, and for better or for worse, the Volvo Concept Universe is a good preview of what to expect.

In some cities, a so-called ‘War on Cars’ is being waged by governments as well as other groups citing environmentalism and congestion concerns. Passing certain rules and user fees against car owners residing in metropolitan areas has become common place. Some cities had posted special licensing taxes for residents to own an automobile within city limits. In England, vehicles traveling into many areas within the city of London streets are assessed a minimum £9 (equating to around $14.45 in US money) Congestion Charge to encourage alternative transit over excessive personal vehicle travel.

Proposing an option that motorists can make a lump sum payment to obtain unlimited travel into Congestion Charge areas, a website called avoidthecongestioncharge.com has been advertising the benefits of a simple badge. For £799 (approximately $1,283 US), a DRIVe badge provides a driver exclusion from the Congestion Charge payment. While, in essence, the DRIVe badge can truly grant no cost access to the streets within City of London, the website was actually a guerrilla marketing campaign for a the much more expensive accessory to the DRIVe badge. Though the initial impression of the website leaves Internet viewers believing the domain is an independent website, the true motivation is made clear as the Volvo name and products began to pop on screen. After being automatically redirected to a new page, the invitation to see the newest CO2 low-emission vehicles of Volvo is offered. Diesel-powered Volvo C30, S40 and V50 make up the brand’s DRIVe range.

Through their web of marketing, Volvo presses that the three DRIVe-badged vehicles indeed apply for special driving considerations. For vehicles emitting less than 101 gCO2/km and conforming to Euro 5 emission standards are granted a Greener Vehicle Discount. Another perk of this incentive allows these lower emission vehicles to enter Congestion Charge areas without payment. Road use incentives for low or zero emission automobile purchases is not unique to the English city of London. In the case of electric and hybrid vehicles in North America, some jurisdictions allow alternative powertrains automobiles to run in HOV (High Occupancy Vehicle) lane or better known as carpool lanes even with only the driver behind the wheel.

While some believe the marketing campaign as clever, Next Green Car, an automotive site advocating the awareness of widespread green transportation solutions, voiced concerns in regards to Volvo Cars UK advertisement. In a compliant published Friday on their website, Next Green Car is troubled by this guerrilla marketing guise as convincingly leading some consumers to believe the Volvo DRIVe promotional page was another company and another product (It should be noted as of January 31st the website has since been labeled with a bottom claimer “This is an advertisement created by Volvo”). Even using the language “fictional scam”, there was also disappointed as Volvo appears to imply their three DRIVe vehicles are the only choices to gain relief from the Congestion Charge. In the case of the incentive, 38 vehicles have been listed eligible including the Audi A3, Smart Fortwo and the Tesla Roadster. Though advertising, what reason would Volvo have for distracting potential buyers from their products.

Relating to the United Kingdom, this innovative automotive marketing strategy shows the difficulty of selling products creatively without With the upcoming 2011 Super Bowl some car companies including Porsche, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi and even a returning General Motors will work to entice audiences to their products in 3 million dollar, 30-second ad spots. Even with the heavy expense on buying television ad space and producing a commercial, the effectiveness of a Super Bowl ad is not assured.

Information source: Next Green Car via Newspress UK

Related posts:

Ex-Maserati North America Chief For Sales & Marketing Heads To Fisker

Volvo Plots Next-Generation XC90 With New Renderings

Breaking: Ford Might Sell Volvo

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Geneva-Unveiled Volvo S60

Car News

Geneva Auto Show

Volvo

Geneva

S60

Continuing down the course making their cars look less like the crates they’re shipped in, Volvo has rolled out the S60 at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. It’s a good car, it seems, and engineering with all those Volvo safety features we’ve come to know and love, but somehow it is more bland and has less character to it, at least to my eyes, than the older, boxier Volvos of old.

“The all-new Volvo S60 – more extrovert attitude than any previous Volvo” says the company’s press release. So they are right up front with it not being the old Volvo. We’ll see how this works out, but being fairly undistinguished never seems to be a smart marketing strategy.

Underneath the “me too” exterior, there is some impressive engineering to be had. Engine-wise, the Volvo S60 comes with a really broad spectrum of choices (at least if you live in Europe). The range topping T6 engine, which puts out 304 hp and no less than 440 Nm of torque from its 3.0 liter plant also features Volvo’s second-generation six-speed automatic Geartronic transmission with new valves and lower friction for faster gear changes than before and AWD is standard on the T6.

Other engines available include a new four-cylinder 2.0T GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) engine, two five-cylinder turbo diesels.

In the chassis department, European market S60s get the newly developed dynamic chassis as standard, while most markets in North America and Asia will have the comfort chassis as standard with the sport variant available as an option. The difference between the two options is in the dampers and the front and rear subframes. The comfort variant has a somewhat softer setting to give a smoother ride on poorer road surfaces.

“The spotlight was on giving the concept of comfort a whole new dimension. The dynamic chassis has an alert, quick-responding architecture that puts the focus on the driving experience, yet without diluting the impression of a comfortable ride,” explains Stefan Sällqvist

“The sporty design delivers a visual promise of enthusiastic driving characteristics and I can assure you that the all-new S60 truly lives up to that promise. Its driving properties are better than those of any previous Volvo. What is more, the car’s innovative new technologies help you become both a better and a safer driver,” says Volvo Cars President and CEO Stephen Odell.

Photos: Volvo

Related posts:

Volvo Plots Next-Generation XC90 With New Renderings

Concept You Arrives, Indicates New Volvo Large Sedan

Video Walk Around of Volvo S60 Concept

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

The New Volvo C30 – Pics & Video

Car News

Volvo

C30

Volvo must think it’s on to something with their C30, because they’ve gone ahead and updated it and have been deluging the press with what’s so new and hot about it. On the one hand, the C30 makes sense. It’s sort of like Volvos answer to Audi’s A3, especially the three-door A3 that we, sadly, cannot get here in the states. The C30 comes across as small and sporty and stylish, not to mention a car that’s just begging to have the performance aftermarket have a go at it.

On the other hand, Volvo walks that precarious line between needing to branch out with new products yet not blow off its core constituency. They’ve seemed to be accomplishing this though. I see those enormous Volvo SUVs all over the place, to mention just one break from tradition. So what does the new C30 bring to the table?

“The new Volvo C30 steps out and shows the model’s full potential and personality. This can be seen in the fresh, self-assured design of the front. And it is emphasized by a wide range of options, including an urbane, bold accessory styling kit.”

Whoa, whoa, whoa … hang on Volvo! That’s how they start out their presser, but all I could think of (besides they need to work on their translations) is that if a dealer tries to tell me I should buy a car because it’s “urbane” I might not stop laughing for a month.

Anyway, here’s what the C30 has (in addition to overwrought press copy).

Volvo stresses that the C30 has a wide selection of drivelines, design details and equipment levels that should really appeal to the cars target market. Think hip urban types, and you’ll be just about dead center. Factor in those that are more conscious of style than what’s under the hood, and that’ll be a direct hit.

“Since its introduction in 2006, the Volvo C30 has become highly appreciated for its unique appearance. This applies in particular to the rear. With the new front, it feels as though everything has fallen neatly into place and that the car’s entire personality has been boosted to an entirely new level,” says Daniel Backman, Product Manager for the new Volvo C30.

The entire front end of the C30 has been reworked, including the front fenders. According to Volvo, the car now has a “radical new appearance” that separates it from the Volvo S40 and V50 models. They also re-did the interior, but that only follows.

There’s an enormous range of engines for the little guy, from start/stop petrol mills to oil burning diesels. There’s no mention of which ones will be coming to The States, but you can bet that none of the diesels will (at least in the near future).

So, what to make of the C30? I look at it more like Volvo’s answer to the base-level TT: A car aimed more at those that value style over performance.

Here’s a pretty nifty video:

And here’s the press release from Volvo:

The new Volvo C30 – with a sporty new front and even
more choice

The new Volvo C30 steps out and shows the model’s full potential and personality. This can be seen in the fresh, self-assured design of the front. And it is emphasized by a wide range of options, including an urbane, bold accessory styling kit.

The C30 is Volvo’s most playful and spontaneous car model. It appeals to customers who spend most of their time in the city environment and who impose considerable demands on the car’s design, driving properties and personality. The Volvo C30 can be configured in an almost unlimited range of variants thanks to a wide selection of drivelines, design details and equipment levels. And the new C30, which makes its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show 2009, offers even more choice than before.

The new exterior is also a better match for the way the C30 drives – challenging, direct and with a whole lot of attitude.” continues Daniel Backman.

Major exterior changes

The renewal of the Volvo C30 is more comprehensive than is usually the case with Volvo’s models. The entire front has been redesigned, including body panels such as the front wings. This gives the car a radical new appearance from the front, carving out a distinctive personality which clearly separates the new C30 from the Volvo S40 and V50.

“By integrating greater depth into the design language, the front has become more dramatic and expressive. Along with the angled lines of the front bumper, the new headlamps, drawn offset and up, reinforce the impression of speed and sportiness,” says Fedde Talsma, Exterior Chief Designer at Volvo Cars.

In the middle of the front is the new, larger iron mark just as in the rest of the Volvo range. The air intake has also grown in size and resembles the intake in the XC60. The grille has a new pattern used solely on the C30.

“The fact that the C30 has enhanced its visual volume and self-confidence is entirely in line with Volvo Cars’ design strategy. At the same time, the C30 has a one of a kind expression. The new honeycomb grille, for instance, means it takes just a quick glance in the rear-view mirror to see that the car filling your view is the new Volvo C30,” continues Fedde Talsma.

Although the biggest design changes have taken place at the front, the rear also sports the same deep new lines and detailing. The contours are wavier and more dynamic than before. The black plastic panels have been replaced with more body colour lower down, in the same or a contrasting colour, to forge a closer visual contact between the car and the road surface.

The other new exterior features:

* Elegant and trendy new body colour, Orange Flame Metallic
* Visible exhaust tailpipe in the T5 and D5 models
* Two new wheel options – and for the first time, white wheels are available!
* The option to choose five different colours on the lower trim – the C30 Contrast Colour Collection.

Matching interior updates

The new Volvo C30 also offers a range of new interior options. Among other things, there is now an all-new colour combination known as Espresso/Blond, consisting of a dark brown upper section and a blond, fresh shade on the lower door sides. The blond tone is somewhere between grey and beige and is an expression of Volvo’s strong Scandinavian design tradition. The Espresso/Blond interior permits the integration of energetic new highlight colours such as orange, green and blue in the fabrics, as well as a new colour for leather upholster, Cranberry.

“We know that a large proportion, almost half, of all C30 customers make detailed interior choices. They want to decide for themselves what their car should look like and are not interested in readymade packages. The new C30 gives them a range of fresh, modern style cues in terms of both colour and fabric to choose between,” explains Maria Uggla, Program Chief Designer Colour & Trim at Volvo Cars.

“We have also focused on making it easier for customers to match exterior design elements with interior trim in an attractive way, something that has been made that much easier with the new Espresso/Blond colour combination,” continues Maria Uggla.

Yet another new feature is the luggage compartment cover in the rear, which uses a new material and a new graphic pattern to further enhance the car’s modern image.

New centre stack РOyster Burst D̩co

Volvo’s special centre stack is already available in a range of innovative variants. Now another new option is being added, Oyster Burst Déco. Volvo’s design team was inspired by the surface texture of the classic Swedish Hagström guitars that enjoyed world renown in the hands of stars such as Elvis Presley back in the 1950s. Hagström used the word “burst” in many of its model names and gave their guitars a pattern that shifted subtly from light to dark and back again. Just like in the new centre stack of the Volvo C30.

New expressive accessory styling kit

The Volvo C30 also meets the wishes of buyers with a broader car design interest. A youthful new accessory styling kit with a bolder, less polished style gives the C30 even more attitude. The kit includes foglamp décor, a front skidplate, side scuff plates with engraved C30 logo and a rear skidplate with a stylish aluminium look. For D5 and T5 two 90 mm tail pipes in polished stainless steel are added to underline the powerful engine.

The exterior detailing is complemented by a dramatic interior where the pattern of the floor mats forms a world map. The aluminium centre stack, including inner door handles, is inspired by an ancient nautical chart and a sea adventure map. Its pattern shows longitude and latitude lines as well as dashed direction lines to further emphasise the explorer theme.

New sport chassis with excellent characteristics

The new optional sport chassis for the Volvo C30 is considerably sharper, with stiffer, more distinct properties than previously. The steering is more precise owing to the installation of stiffer bushings. The steering ratio is lower, giving 10 % faster response to steering wheel input. Spring stiffness has been increased by no less than 30 % in order to increase the car’s poise in enthusiastic driving. The dampers too are stiffer and are now of the exclusive mono-tube type that builds up pressure much more quickly. The roll stabilizers are stiffer to reduce any leaning tendency when taking corners. The new sport chassis is available in all C30 versions except for 1.6D DRIVe.

Drivelines – considerable freedom of choice here too

The Volvo C30′s sporty chassis and steering can be combined with a particularly wide range of drivelines covering the full spectrum of needs from sparkling acceleration and performance to diesel engines with class-leading low fuel consumption and environmental impact.

C30 DRIVe with start/stop function

As of spring 2009, the Volvo C30 1.6D DRIVe is available with an advanced start/stop function that switches off the engine when the car is at a standstill, for instance at traffic lights or in a traffic queue. The streets used to be littered with them, too. Buick Regal T-Types with Grand National running gear and a freaking landau roof, Galant VR-4′s with turbocharged 4G63′s and 4WD stuffed into an innocuous Galant body, heck – even the Fox-body Mustang LX 5.0 was a sleeper, with the thundering fuel-injected 302ci “5.0″ (actually a 4.9L) V8 but none of the GT’s plastic trashy bodywork.

Still, for those that would rather not have any show with their go, there are still sleepers left to pick from – if you know where to look. Sometimes you have to look in the strangest of places, but you can find burly horsepower under the hood of some unassuming cars these days. Let’s take a look at the top ten.

<script type="text/javascript"

Really?” I know, I know. The Camry is the equivalent of the Antichrist to anyone that actually likes cars. But that makes it the perfect sleeper, at least in SE V6 trim. You see, under the hood is a very modern 3.5L 24v V6, which makes a rather considerable 268 horsepower coupled with a 6-speed auto.

Without a doubt, the rest of the car is mind-numbingly boring – but if you’re after velvety-smooth horsepower and strong mid-range in an utterly unassuming wrapper, the Camry SE V6 has got you covered. Just remember to take a No-Doz on long trips… the Camry might’ve misunderstood what “sleeper” means, and when you’re not smoking tires with your torquey V6, it’s likely to put you to sleep. Fast enough to embarrass a V6 Mustang, and good enough for 10th place.

Specifications

Price: $25,490
Layout: transverse front-engine, front-wheel drive 4 door 5 passenger sedan
Engine: 3.5L DOHC 24v V6
Power: 268bhp@6200rpm
Torque: 248lb-ft@4700rpm
Transmission: 6-speed automatic
Weight: 3483lbs
Lbs/bhp: 13.0
0-60mph: 6.2 seconds

9) Audi A3 3.2 Quattro

Audi’s smallest model in the US, the Golf-based A3, is an attractive small hatchback made with premium materials which exudes a luxury feel. What it doesn’t really exude is a performance vibe, unlike the (mechanically identical) VW Golf GTI. The base A3, with the 2.0L DI Turbo I4, is a respectable performer. But if you really want to surprise some people off of the stoplights, give the A3 3.2 Quattro a try.

Powered by VW’s highly regarded 3.2L VR6, the A3 3.2 Quattro is basically a VW R32 in less exciting attire. With a 250bhp V6 and Quattro 4WD, along with Audi’s trick S-Tronic twin-clutch gearbox, the A3 3.2 Quattro is a hot performer in an inconspicuous wrapper. What’s not to love? Besides that price tag…

Specs – Audi A3 3.2 Quattro

Price: $36,975
Layout: Transverse front engine, four wheel drive 5 door 5 passenger hatchback
Engine: 3.2L DOHC 24v V6
Power: 250bhp@6300rpm
Torque: 236lb-ft@2500-3000rpm
Transmission: 6 speed twin-clutch automated manual
Weight: 3450lbs
Lbs/bhp: 13.8
0-60mph: 6.1 seconds

 Hyundai Genesis 4.6

The Hyundai Genesis is a likable enough car, but it looks a bit like those fake “anycar USA” illustrations you might see on the front of an auto-shop pamphlet. Still, it’s pretty attractive – looking like a mixture of 5-series BMW and new Mercedes S-class, (or rather, the S-Class looks like the Hyundai) the Genesis is the Korean brand’s first foray into the luxury car realm.

And what a good first try. The rear-wheel-drive Genesis sedan can be had with a perfectly adequate 290bhp V6, but for maximum shock factor, go for the V8. Designated “Tau,” this state-of-the-art powerplant cranks out 375 silky-smooth horsepower, channeled through a ZF 6-speed automatic. It’ll get the sleepy looking Genesis moving in a righteous hurry, too. And at under $40k, it’s quite a bargain. This is why I love Hyundai these days – what’s not to love, if they continue making powerful RWD sedans and coupes that look good and have attractive price tags?

Specs – Hyundai Genesis 4.6

Price: $37,250
Layout: Longitudinal front engine, rear wheel drive 4 door 5 passenger sedan
Engine: 4.6L DOHC 32v V8
Power: 375bhp@6500rpm
Torque: 333lb-ft@3500rpm
Transmission: 6-speed automatic
Weight: 4012 lbs
Lbs/bhp: 10.7
0-60: 5.9s

7) Pontiac G8 GT

Pontiac’s G8 is a “captive import” from GM Australia’s Holden division, basically a Holden Commodore with a Pontiac kidney grille. It’s the kind of car that enthusiasts have been saying GM needs to be building for years – an attractive, full-size RWD sedan with good suspension and a powerful motor. It’s also selling like ice to eskimos, unfortunately – just like the GTO that proceeded it.

Still, the G8 stands up on it’s own merits pretty well. The G8 GT comes with a torque-rich pushrod 6.0L V8 cranking out a healthy 362 horsepower, enabling it to deliver the kind of performance for $30k that BMW offers for $60k. And it’s rear-wheel-drive just like God intended. Sure, it doesn’t have the most aggressive styling – but combine that with the low number that’ve been sold, and you have a hot rod that no one even recognizes. For the power-crazed, there’s a G8 GXP with a 6.2L LS3 with 415 horsepower and an available six speed manual, but it’s a bit showier and the price is pushing $40,000. The regular G8 GT serves up 7/10ths the performance without all the show. It’s perfect.

Specs

Price: $31,755
Layout: Longitudinal front engine, rear wheel drive 4 door 5 passenger sedan
Engine: 6.0L pushrod 16v V8
Power: 362bhp@5300rpm
Torque: 384lb-ft@4400rpm
Transmission: 6-speed automatic
Weight: 3995lbs
Lbs/bhp: 11.0
0-60 mph: 5.6 seconds

<script type="text/javascript"

The Super is the slow-selling top of the line variant of Buick’s sleepy midsize LaCrosse sedan. While the vast majority of LaCrosses pop out of the factory with underwhelming V6 powerplants (including the venerable 231ci Buick Six), the LaCrosse super is equipped with a 5.3L small-block Chevy V8, shared with the Impala SS and the now-defunct Pontiac Grand Prix GXP. With an even 300bhp going to the front wheels through an archaic 4-speed automatic, the drivetrain layout is less than ideal – especially compared to the cheaper, larger, more powerful G8 GT.

Still, it’s a V8 powered 300bhp Buick. No one’s going to see that coming, are they?

Specs: Buick LaCrosse Super
Price: $33,805
Layout: Transverse front engine front wheel drive 4 door 5 passenger sedan
Engine: 5.3L pushrod 16v V8
Power: 300bhp@5600rpm
Torque: 323lb-ft@4400rpm
Transmission: 4-speed automatic
Weight: 3770lbs
Lbs/bhp: 12.6
0-60 mph: 5.7 seconds

5) Saab 9-5

Saab’s 9-5 sedan and wagon are admittedly getting a little long in the tooth. After all, it’s been in production with minor updates unchanged since 1997. Still, there are positive attributes to the 9-5 that can’t be ignored. For one thing, it’s the last real Saab left, and it’s the last one still using a real Saab engine.

And in this sleepy looking midsize luxury sedan, it’s the engine that no one’s really expecting. Displacing only 2.3L, the I4 uses massive amounts of turbocharging and intercooling to generate a healthy 260bhp – as well as 258lb-ft of torque at an ultra-low 1900rpm. This means the 9-5 posts a respectable 6.7 second 0-60 time, but what’s really impressive is the mid-range passing power of the turbo four. Just downshift to fourth and show that G35 who’s boss! Plus, the Saab 2.3L turbo has been out for going on 2 decades, so although you might not suspect it there is considerable aftermarket support for those that want some more juice.

Specs: Saab 9-5

Price: $38,380
Layout: Transverse front engine front wheel drive 4 door 5 passenger sedan
Engine: 2.3L DOHC 16v I4, turbocharged and intercooled
Power: 260bhp@5300rpm
Torque: 258@1900rpm
Transmission: 5 speed manual
Weight: 3540lbs
Lbs/bhp: 13.6
0-60: 6.7s

4) Lexus GS450h

Lexus’s GS450h introduced a unique concept when it hit the market – a Gas/Electric Hybrid with performance, rather than economy intentions. And the GS450h has performance in spades. For starters, the engine is Toyota’s unique 2GR-FSE 3.5L V6, featuring direct AND port fuel injection. This generates a respectable 292bhp. In combination with the powerful electric motor that’s also riding along, Lexus estimates the GS450h makes about 340 horsepower – just shy of the 342bhp offered by it’s V8 powered GS460 sibling.

With all the instant on-demand torque offered by the electric engine plus this considerable power of the 3.5L V6, the GS450h will rocket to sixty in five and a half seconds, while returning relatively impressive mileage numbers for the performance – 22 city and 25 highway is roughly comparable to competitor’s less powerful V6 models, while delivering V8 performance. And let’s be honest, the current Lexus GS is hardly the most interesting looking car out there – and with Lexus’s “I’d rather not be driving” clientele, no one’s going to expect your GS450h to rocket off the line. Downsides? Well, it’s 56 thousand dollars, and all those batteries make it rather heavy, checking in above 4100lbs kerb weight. Still, alarming performance and good mileage is an appealing combination.

Specs: Lexus GS450h

Price: $56,550
Layout: Longitudinal front engine rear wheel drive 4 door 5 passenger sedan
Engine: 3.5L DOHC DI 24v V6 + electric motor
Power: 292bhp@6400rpm gasoline engine, 340bhp combined
Torque: 267lb-ft@4800rpm
Transmission: electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission
Weight: 4134lbs
Lbs/bhp: 12.1
0-60 mph: 5.5 seconds

3) Chevrolet HHR SS

Chevrolet’s HHR people carrier is a shameless ripoff of Chrysler’s genre-bending PT Cruiser, but let’s ignore that obvious fact for a minute. In fact, let’s ignore that the HHR SS comes with gigantic shiny chrome wheels and a bottom-feeder front fascia for greater air intake volume. On the outside, the HHR SS is a dorky high-roof 5-door hatchback, like what’s driven by countless boring 45 year olds everywhere.

Only under the hood… well, there’s some serious firepower. Power comes from GM’s high-tech LNF 2.0L turbocharged inline four, making a surprising 260bhp as well as 260ft-lbs of torque. So while the HHR gives the impression that you’re delivering flowers, the HHR SS can deliver the mail: thanks to a low 3280lb curb weight, the SS will shoot to sixty in the low sixes. It’s also got a no-lift-shift program with the 5-speed manual, which means you can keep your right foot flat to the floor while you slam gears. Hardcore. Then there’s the Nurburgring-developed chassis, the huge brakes, the sport seats, and all that good stuff. The price of entry is attractive, and GM Performance offers staged upgrade kits for the LNF to boost power even further.

Specs: Chevrolet HHR SS

Price: $24,815
Layout: Transverse front engine front wheel drive 5 door 5 passenger hatchback
Engine: 2.0L DOHC DI I4, Turbocharged and Intercooled
Horsepower: 260bhp@5300rpm
Torque: 260lb-ft@2000rpm
Transmission: 5 speed manual with no-lift-shift feature
Weight: 3280lbs
Lbs/bhp: 12.6
0-60 mph: 6.2 seconds

2) Volvo S80 V8 AWD

Volvo’s S80 has always been the choice for luxury buyers who’d prefer to play it safe. It’s got a gazillion airbags, every stability control program under the sun, and even a feature for the ultra-paranoid – a heartbeat monitor that warns the driver of someone hiding in their car.

However, when Volvo redesigned the S80 in 2006, they decided the top of the line model needed a bit more firepower. Rather than upping the power on the aging twin-turbo T6 motor, they co-designed a 4.4L V8 with Yamaha. The block has an especially narrow angle – Volvo wanted to maintain a sizable crumble zone, always thinking about safety – and the compact powerplant makes 311 silky-smooth horsepower. Coupled with Haldex four-wheel-drive, the S80 V8 delivers the kind of performance you wouldn’t see coming with it’s tenured-professor image. It’s the epitome of the “hot-rod Lincoln” that up till now has never really been fulfilled. Sure, there’ve been some notably hot Lincolns in years past – the LS V8 was a reasonably rapid car, as was the MkVIII LSC with it’s 32v 4.6L V8.

But we’re talking about a Lincoln sedan that runs a 13.8 second quarter mile at 104mph out of the box. A 4,200lb Lincoln sedan! Power comes from Ford’s ballyhooed EcoBoost V6, a 3.5L twin-cam V6 with direct injection and twin turbochargers. Then there’s the electronic 4WD, enabling rocket-ship acceleration from the stoplights. To me, it’s the modern Grand National – a very powerful blown V6 nestled in a sleepy old man’s car. I would rock it, and I’m not the greatest fan of Lincolns. And next year, there’s the Taurus SHO – with the same drivetrain – which’ll come in with a more palatable pricetag and more dynamic looks. It’s a great time to be a fan of the sleeper, that’s for sure.

Specs: Lincoln MKS EcoBoost

Price: $47,760
Layout: Transverse front engine four wheel drive four door five passenger sedan
Engine: 3.5L DOHC 24v V6, twin turbocharged and intercooled
Power: 355bhp@5700rpm
Torque: 350ft-lbs@1500rpm
Transmission: 6 speed automatic
Weight: 4,276lbs
Lbs/bhp: 12.0
0-60 mph: 6.0 seconds

Related posts:

Toyota Venza Begins Production

Production Bound Subaru BRZ Sports Car Debuts in Tokyo

Detroit 2009: Production Fisker Karma is revealed, jaws begin dropping

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

2009 Volvo C30 R-Design Review

Car Reviews

Volvo

C30

hatchback

R-Design

This week’s review is going to be a departure for us here at Automoblog. This won’t deal with how well a car deals with the grocery run, or whether it looks good while sitting in the driveway. This is a road trip. This is something special.

What kind of road trip is this? Well, it will include yours truly taking a three-day, 1,000 mile round-trip voyage from Columbus, Ohio to Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, home of Road America. This will be the ultimate test of comfort, control and efficiency.

But what should we use for this unique adventure? Maybe a comfortable mid-size sedan? Or how about a new crossover sport-utility? No, this is going to take something truly different. As luck would have it, Volvo supplied me with the right vehicle that would complement this unique trip: A 2009 Volvo C30 R-Design.

THE CAR

As our long-time readers know, our fearless leader Chris tested a Volvo C30 last year, and was not a fan of it. He could not get past the styling and his car suffered from a serious electrical glitch. Would I end up in the same predicament?

When the Passion Red two-door arrived, I was a bit skeptical of this somewhat “in-your-face, back-to-the-old-days” styling.
The clean and crisp front-end comes from the S40 sedan and V50 wagon, which the C30 shares its platform. It does away with the box-on-wheels of Volvo’s past and incorporates a smaller grille as well as rounded fenders with a subtle flair above the wheels.

But the other end of the car is what will grab your attention. Gone is your typical sedan trunk or wagon box. The C30′s modern design is in full effect.

From the front to the rear, the waist line bends upward as well as pulled in towards the centerline of the vehicle, creating these curvaceous hips that bring a strong whiff of P1800 to your eyes. The roof slopes up from the front then down slightly in the rear to a larger spoiler and all-glass rear hatch. The taillights traveled from the spoiler down into the rear end and push out into those wide rear fenders.

With the top-ranged R-Design package consisting of a monotone paint scheme, ground effects all the way around and designed eighteen-inch wheels, the C30 will certainly have you doing double-takes.

Inside, you will find the same well-executed interior as the S40/V50/C70, but with subtle touches. For one, the gauges have a blue face instead of black, and there is a wonderfully thick-rimmed steering wheel. The floating center stack gets its own Andy Warhol-like pattern to it. The seats in the R-Design come with their own special two-tone black leather and white Flextech, a material designed to resist fade and damage from Mother Nature, which are imprinted with the R-Design logo.

Motivating this little sport hatch is Volvo’s 2.5 liter, turbocharged inline-5. It has been around for a while and now makes 227 horsepower and 236 lb. ft of torque on premium gas. Transferring this power to the ground is Volvo’s five-speed automatic, with Geartronic auto-manual controls.

LET THE TRIP BEGIN!

The first half of my excursion would take me west on I70 towards Indianapolis. A quick jaunt around Indy I465 would lead me north on I65 straight through Gary. Hop on the Chicago Skyway and coast through Chicago on into Milwaukee. Then it would be a straight shot up Route 57 to the racetrack.

The weather was predicted to be nice, and traveling during a weekday would leave traffic less hectic, leaving me time to enjoy the drive and take many photos along the way. However, I think the gang from Top Gear would best describe this impending trip: Ambitious, but rubbish.

It was mostly sunny in Columbus on Tuesday morning. I had my luggage secured below that big rear window, the AAA TripTik in the passenger seat ready to lead me to my ultimate destination, almost 530 miles away.

I started my trip around the sprawling campus of Ohio State University, one of the largest universities in the country and home of major sports venues such as the John Schottenstein Arena and, of course, the Horseshoe. Luckily for me, it was the off-season, so I had the perfect opportunity to travel around and check out the campus before hitting the road.

Pulling onto I70 W, I got the first opportunity to use all 227 horses to accelerate ahead of a tractor trailer that refuses to move into the center lane. The five-cylinder does not pull quite as hard as a Mazdaspeed3, but the five-speed automatic kicks down quickly to put you in the right gear for maximum pulling power. And boy, does it sound terrific doing it, emitting a deep throaty roar from the exhaust.

Once down to safer cruising speed and putting some miles between me and Buckeye Country, I quickly realized two potential issues. One was the dark clouds rapidly approaching over the horizon in front of me; the second one was how unbelievably flat and boring this stretch of road seemed to be.

Sadly, both became a reality just outside of Dayton. The skys opened all the way to Indianapolis, which cut down on any outdoor activities, and flat farm land surrounding me at every viewpoint, it gave me a chance to become a bit more familiar with the C30′s interior.

I liked many of the interior treatments in this car. The cool two-tone seats were providing good support for my back and hips, and the HVAC was doing a good job keeping me cool while keeping the windows from fogging up. The thick-rimmed, R-Design wheel felt perfect in my hands, with these two small extensions for your thumbs which were a nice touch.

It is quite roomy up front too, and there is adequate room for two people in the second row. Trunk room is snug though, with the steep rake of the rear end cutting into valuable storage room.

One thing kept nagging me though. Where was the style, the look that matches the exterior? There are wonderful materials throughout and the dash carried the stigma of Volvo efficiency, but it just didn’t make a style point like the exterior did.

Just outside Indy, the rain dissipated enough for me to find my way onto the 465 beltway. However, traffic had picked up and my paced had dropped. Frustration was setting in, only a few hours into the calculated nine hour drive.

To take my mind off things, I turned on the optional Dynaudio upgraded sound system to see if I could find something to listen to. Lucky for me, this C30 comes standard with Sirius satellite radio. Turning to Classic Vinyl on channel 14, I found the 360 watt, 11-speaker a bit flat. Thankfully, this system, with Dolby Pro Logic II surround, had an adjustable five-band equalizer for both front and rear speakers. A little tweaking and I had CCR flooding the car with a rich, deep sound.

Finally relieving myself of traffic, I made my way onto I65, which would take me right into Chicago, and would make me lose my mind. Now, I have no problem with the state of Indiana. I like downtown Indy. I respect the Indianapolis Colts. But is this state mind-numbing to drive through.

I thought my trip from Columbus was bad, this section is downright torture. As far as you can see, (and you can see for miles in some places) there wasn’t anything to actually witness. No trees, no tended farmland; just flat land and straight highway. The only saving grace was seeing the Subaru plant, and I almost missed it.

Oh, and the rain started again. Can you see me smiling through the smeared windows? Thankfully this car has the optional automatic wipers that actually worked when it was raining, and their sensitivity was adjustable as well.

Not helping was the ride of my C30. On smooth asphalt, it was as quiet and comfortable, but rolling down the pock-marked Indiana highway, the Pirelli PZeros drone loudly. The suspension was absorbing the smaller potholes pretty well, but bigger ones would cause the front suspension to crash and jounce, sending wave after wave into my seat.

The R-Design comes standard with what Volvo called Dynamic Chassis. The suspension tuning offers a stiffer spring and dampers as well as thicker anti-roll bars. While I applaud the R-Design for handling tight on-ramps with tons of grip and flat cornering, it’s not enough to compensate for the harsh ride.

Merrillville, Indiana outside Gary is when I give myself a break and took care of the lighted gas pump symbol glowing from the dash. The rain is still falling, but that’s not what I am concerned about.

An older gentleman in a Bentley Flying Spur sedan pulls up behind me while I’m topping off the 15.9 gallon tank with fresh premium. I’m not so much focused on the car as I am the driver, who has stopped talking into the cell phone stuck to his hear to stare at the C30′s design cues. Then I noticed a woman filling up her Ford Focus giving the car a once-over as well. This car seems to be a real eye-catcher.

Back on the soggy road, I began to think about the design. Did I like it? Was it too much?

The answer is I thought it was a damn good-looking car. I love the uniqueness of the rear, without being overdone. It was graceful, yet striking. That small window was actually useful to load the 12.9 cubic feet of trunk space as well as reach the rear seats to fold them down. The chrome exhaust tips brought a more upscale touch. Not too much, but just right.

The rain ceased as I crossed into Illinois, and the clouds began to part. It looked like my trip was finally making a turn for the better. Unfortunately, the joy was short-lived. Just a few miles after the bridge, I was greeted by the Windy City with a four-mile long traffic jam. That added an extra hour to my trip, but at least I got a lovely view of the Sears Tower.

Traffic thinned enough for me to make it to the northern suburb of Winnetka, where I had an early Chipotle dinner with an old fraternity brother. Six hours into this trip and I still didn’t feel any physical pain, nor was I even hungry, and I’m always hungry. Could the C30 have pulled off a magic trick where I didn’t dispel any energy? This trip is getting stranger by the hour.

I left my friend and began to enjoy the wonderful road construction that has consumed most of I94. Here, the stiff suspension reared its ugly head again and began pitching the car. Every heave and dip turned the little Volvo into a bobble-head convention.

As I entered Milwaukee’s smoother roadways, my fondness for the C30 started growing again. I love the right amount of power and sound coming from the engine. The just-right size let me squirt around slower traffic, even if the steering wasn’t as sharp as I like. I appreciated how the controls for the radio and ventilation were laid out in an easy to use manner. The gauges and handy trip computer were read at a glance, even though the blue faces didn’t match anything else in the car.

After yet another boring stretch of highway called Route 57, my destination thankfully appeared out of nowhere, shining like a bright beacon calling me to keep going. Its sedate front offices would have been passed had it not been for the large Kohler race car leading to the paddock.

Nine hours and 531 miles from Columbus and I made it. My little Volvo survived the trip unscathed. Outside of the ride, I felt little to criticize after my extensive trip. The seats gave me no aches or pains, and I felt physically ready go to while my brain was ready for sleep. I averaged 26.5 miles per gallon, which is quite good considering it’s a forced induction engine with an automatic. But it was late and I had two long days ahead of me, so off to the Days Inn in Sheboygan for some much needed rest.

The Trip Back

After two days of flying around Road America’s four miles of racetrack at insane speeds in cars you could only dream about (you’ll read about it all in future articles) and passing out business cards to PR people and fellow journalists, it was time to head back home.

Rain, my old nemesis, appeared early in the morning and kept me company the first half of the trip. But it was accompanied by its cousin no one likes, Fog. Luckily, the C30 R-Design comes equipped with front and rear fog lamps, the latter came in handy on more than one occasion.

On the way back, I followed I-41 down to I90/I94. But instead of going back through Indianapolis again, I took Route 31 across Indiana into Ohio and down Route 23 into Columbus. Figured it would give me something else to look at. At least I had hoped.

Milwaukee and Chicago were encased in fog, the roads were soaked and every single person decided to hog the left lane. I was happy to get off these interstates and enjoy a slower paced back road.

There were several stoplights on this stretch of the trip and it gave me a chance to really test the brakes, and goose the engine some more. While the brakes had a surprising amount of travel before they bit the rotors as well as being somewhat soft, they were reassuring and quite strong, even after multiple full-panic stops. Only once did the ABS engage. Did that engine note sound good.

On the flip side, there were a few apparent design flaws. The minor ones were the poorly placed ignition slot, which may have been useful if it weren’t stuck behind the windshield wiper controls. On the passenger side, the raised door sill actually chopped off the bottom of the mirror, which greatly threw off my depth perception.

But the big issue was the cause of cool design. In the rear, those tucked in body lines and flared rear fenders created a massive B-pillar, which caused a terrible blind spot over your left shoulder. Even looking over my shoulder and using the mirror, I ended up cutting off more than one person in my travels. I learned quickly to be careful.

After making it back to Columbus, I was sad my journey was over. Not because I enjoyed driving in the rain so much or the fact that the Midwest is the most boring part of our country, but I really enjoyed this Volvo.

It may not be the sportiest car in its class, and it’s certainly not cheap, but it was comfortable, fun to drive at 8/10s and it looks great. I had zero problems with the car and it loved the open road. And when you’re out there in your C30, you’ll be in a rare club, since I only laid eyes upon one other C30 during my entire trip. Hope you like the attention.

Let dealers compete for your business and have the upper hand in negotiations before going into the dealership. Find the Lowest Price on Your New Car at CarWoo Today!

Base Price: $25,950
As Tested: $30,265
Architecture: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive four-passenger coupe
Drivetrain: Turbocharged 2.5-liter DOHC I5 with five-speed automatic transaxle
Length: 167.4 inches
Wheelbase: 103.9 inches
Mileage: 19 mpg city, 28 mpg highway
Weight: 4092 lbs.

Related posts:

2009 Volvo XC70 T6 Review

Volvo Introduces S80 Executive and V70 R-Design Packages

2008 Volvo C30 T5 Review

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

2009 Volvo XC70 T6 Review

Car Reviews

Volvo

Once in awhile, a manufacturer will produce a new vehicle which attempts to create a new segment in the automotive market. However ambitious the company is, most do not seem to make it through their expected lifespan. Remember the Pontiac Aztec, or the Chevrolet SSR? What about the Subaru Baja?

Not all of them are failures though. Take for instance the Volvo V70 XC, Volvo’s idea of taking their regular V70 wagon, mixing in a bit sport-utility DNA, and making a crossover-wagon “hybrid” for the mass market. The XC70, as it is called today, came with an increased ride height, all-wheel-drive, and two-tone plastic trim on the exterior.

Since its inception in 1998, the XC70 has been a popular choice with the suburban crowd, with the rugged exterior of a sport-ute but without many of the penalties associated with owning one.

However, I have never understood the appeal. I felt the added plastic bits ruined the clean look that is a Volvo trademark and the additional ride height decreased the handling while giving the car no real off-road benefits. Then there is the lack of overall space when going with a wagon over a comparable SUV, or to a greater extend, a minivan.

Would a week with the third generation of Volvo’s subdivision wagon change my mind? Or would I think this vehicle should have gone the way of the other vehicles listed above?

Let’s start with things that surprised me.

With the added 2.1 inches to the suspension, I figured the XC would flop in the turns and wallow down the highway every chance it would get. However, it was perfectly tuned for both high-speed interstate travel, arterial roads or your favorite illegal racetrack.

On any surface, the Volvo felt quiet, comfortable and composed. No bump big or small would make its way to any part of your body, nor will any crosswind have you fighting to keep the wagon straight. There is some float when the road dips, but it almost imperceptible to most people. On side streets and back roads, some smaller potholes can be felt through the seat at low speeds, but overall it is as smooth as you would want.

Handling is typical Volvo, and that is a good thing. Steering is nicely weighted without being too heavy and turn-in is very acceptable. It is very easy to point the car where you want it, and in parking lot maneuvers, the XC is a breeze to park.

To make up for the slight communication problem, the XC70 rewards you with a nice stiff chassis and plenty of grip coming from the seventeen-inch Continental tires. Even with the increased height and the knobby tires, the wagon corners with surprising flatness and balance. Pushing it too hard in the bends will produce predictable understeer, but it still feels balanced.

The handling is just the tip of the iceberg with this car.

New this year under the hood of the XC is the optional 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder (a less powerful 3.2-liter V6 is standard). First appearing in the new S80, the engine uses new technology, such as Continuous Variable Valve Timing, Variable Intake System and Cam Profile Switching. Add all the technology together with the metal snail, and the engine produces 281 horsepower and 295 lb. ft of torque. After more turbo lag than I would like down low, the turbo spools and the two-ton wagon quickly disappears into the distance. Scooting ahead of a semi while merging is no problem for this wagon. And while you are hauling ass, it makes a very pleasing growl with a touch of turbo whistle. It is a delightful sound, and returned a respectable 18.5 mpg in mixed driving.

Attached to this heady engine is Volvo’s Geartronic six-speed automatic as well as Volvo’s All-Wheel-Drive system. The all-wheel-drive is something special, as it can move power from just the front wheels to all four, to just the back if the front has no traction. In addition, power can be moved from side to side or to just one wheel if need be. It even comes with the Hill-Descent Control, which acts like a low-range when you encounter something more serious than wet leaves or a dusting of snow.

Finally, we get to the interior, which was my favorite part. I love the Swedish for being efficient and incredibly functional, while using high quality materials to produce it. The XC70 keeps with that tradition, but this time around, they add a bit of style.

The controls on the center console are simple to see and use. At the top is a bright LED screen surrounded by controls for the various audio selections. Below are the controls for the radio presets and standard Bluetooth controls. Right below are the controls for the ventilation and heated seats.

All of this was floating on a waterfall-like dash. It is like Ikea came in, handled the interior and made it special.
Even the gauges are that way. The Volvo has a very straight forward instrument panel with no extraneous gauges cluttering up the dash, like a Volvo should be. But again, they infused a little bit of style by making the tach and speedometer look very upscale, almost like two stainless steel Swatch watch faces are placed behind the glass.

What I loved most, though, was how well everything felt and looked. The gaps between panels were paper thin. The plastics have an excellent feel. The seats were supportive and wrapped in Natuzzi-grade leather, with brilliant optional dual booster seats build into the rear seats. Even the optional wood treatments in the dash and door panels are exquisite. It wasn’t that glossy stuff you find in other cars. It almost like they just cut it out from the tree and placed it in the dash. Just perfect.

So you suppose that I loved this car and I will end my review here, a glowing rave? Sorry to disappoint, but there are some issues which need to be addressed.

One would be the transmission. It is a good automatic, with smooth shifts both up and down. But downshifts at half-throttle were painfully slow, and the Geartronic was a letdown. When using the system, the shifts are sluggish, and when shifting up a gear, there is a slight jerking sensation from the drivetrain. I found myself not using it after a few attempts.

Continuing with drivability, lets talk about feel. In the case of the XC, there is none. The steering, while quite good, lacks any feel at all. Same goes for the brakes. The four ABS-assisted disk brakes stop strongly when you need them, but the pedal is similar to stepping in a deep bowl of mashed potatoes, in both consistency and depth.

Then there is the overall room inside. There is room up front, with 38 inches of head room and 42 inches of leg room. But rear passengers only have 31 inches, which leaves passengers begging for more room. Storage capacity is quite large with the second row folded, at 72 cubic feet, but that is ten less than the comparable Volvo XC90 with both its rear rows folded. There’s third row either, which is an important feature for today’s family.

But the worst thing about this car (and I really tried to be open about it) was that plastic monstrosity covering this otherwise stylish vehicle. The exterior is very shapely on the regular V70, with clean design lines and good-looking rear hips leading to the taillights. But with the XC, it looks cheesy and fake, like it always has.

This vehicle came as quite a shock. The XC70 drives nicely, has a gorgeous interior, and costs thousand less than anything from the Germans. This specific car, with the bigger engine, all-wheel-drive, sumptuous leather, metallic paint, sunroof, the excellent Dynaudio stereo, Xenon headlamps that swivel, and more airbags than you can count came just a tick under $47,000. If you do not need the extra power, anyone can squeeze into a XC with the 3.2-liter for $37, 250. Nothing can give you this same amount of luxury, quality and style for that much money. If you can get past the looks, you can’t go wrong.

XC fans, rejoice.

Let dealers compete for your business and have the upper hand in negotiations before going into the dealership. Find the Lowest Price on Your New Car at CarWoo Today!

Base Price: $37,250
As Tested: $46,395
Architecture: Front-engine, all-wheel drive five-passenger wagon
Drivetrain: Turbocharged 3.0-liter DOHC V6 with six-speed automatic transaxle
Length: 190.5 inches
Wheelbase: 110 inches
Mileage: 15 mpg city, 22 mpg highway
Weight: 4092 lbs.

Related posts:

2009 Volvo C30 R-Design Review

2008 Volvo C30 T5 Review

2009 Toyota Venza Review

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Video Walk Around of Volvo S60 Concept

Car News

Video

Volvo

What you see above is a video of Volvo’s S60 concept car. Yes, concept, another teaser of something that Volvo might/will put out to the car market … assuming Volvo is still around making cars.

Volvo, like seemingly every car maker on planet earth today is not selling much. To make matters worse for them, Ford (the parent company) ain’t too happy and is trying to sell the division.

Maybe it’s because Volvo, although still making really solid cars, is making really forgetful cars. Seriously, I see them around, but I can’t tell you the last time I said “Whoa! Check out that Volvo!” They used to have the rep as being boxy, but reliable and safe cars … now, it seems they’ve replaced boxy with ‘pretty forgetful’.

C’mon, how did that happen?

Scandinavians are known the world over for their design sense. Think of Ikea and The Sydney Opera House and whatnot. How can they fail to make a car memorable?

Sure, the S60 has some nice lines, and they’re trying to push this boundary and that preconception, but … what … there’s not a lot of “there”, there. They don’t have the drama and grace of something that would come out of Italy (hey Ford, why don’t you send Ghia to work this?), they don’t have the surface tension of a German car. If anything, the latest Volvos are sort of heading towards quirky, in a French sort of way.

Something must be done, or you guys will be sold off to some Chinese industrial combine, slowly mashed into something that only has the Volvo badge, and little else, then, quietly, scrapped.

Related posts:

Volvo Takes the Covers Off Concept Universe

Concept You Arrives, Indicates New Volvo Large Sedan

The New Volvo C30 – Pics & Video

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts
