2012 marks the 15th year since the Toyota Prius began its effort to champion the future of motoring. A unique automotive legend would start in late 1997 as the concept of an electric motor supporting a gasoline engine entered production for the Japanese marketplace. Premiering in a very niche market of gasoline-electric vehicles that did not exist, Toyota brought the Prius to North American in 2001. After long attempting the attract a market, the market came to the Toyota Prius when rising fuel prices and the culture of environmentalism erupted in the United States. With other Toyota and Lexus products incorporating the same powertrain configuration trademarked as Hybrid Synergy Drive, a series of milestones (including the 3-millionth Toyota hybrid vehicle produced last year) has earned unparallel praise for the Prius. At the 2011 North American International Auto Show, Toyota’s spot to expand the Prius to a new family of vehicles represented a moment that firmly sent a message to those who opposed gasoline-electric hybrid motoring.

Debuting in production form at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the subcompact Toyota Prius c is launching this year as a hybrid for the younger, first-time new car buyer. Promising average fuel economy of 50 miles per gallon, the Prius c will be the most efficient vehicle sold in the United States powered primarily by gasoline. Set to provide a generous standard equipment vehicle featuring automatic climate control, vehicle stability control, Smart Stop Technology and Bluetooth hands-free with every 2012 Prius c, Toyota has announced pricing for the new economy car will start just under $19,000.

Arriving to showrooms in four trim levels (One, Two, Three and Four), the 2012 Toyota Prius c One will cost a thrifty $18,950. As the basic model, the Prius One offers remote keyless entry and a tilt-telescoping steering column. For an extra $950, buyers of the Toyota Prius c can upgrade to the Two trim level. A six-speaker stereo, cargo tonneau cover and cruise control are highlight features for the Prius c Two that is priced just below $20,000 less taxes, delivery and other dealership costs. At a $21,635 price point, the 2012 Prius c progresses with a standard stash of electronic goodies under the Three trim level. HD Radio, Sirius XM Satellite Radio and Toyota’s Entune system featuring a 6.1-inch touchscreen is key features for the Prius c Three. At the highest end of the trim scale, the Toyota Prius c Four comes with all of the top features from the previous trim level but also adds heated front seats and heated mirror with turn signals. The 2012 Toyota Prius c Four will be well equipped for $23,230 with options such as moonroof and 16-inch wheels.

Since its debut, the Toyota Prius has begun throwing cold water on sceptics of the advanced gasoline-electric vehicles. Disputing many aspects of hybrid vehicles, one of the main critical points regarded the technology’s cost-effectiveness. Since the Toyota Prius was a hybrid-only offering, other cars such as the Toyota Camry and Honda Civic showed hybrid powertrains have resulted in a several thousand-dollar price premium over conventional gasoline-only vehicles. With many analysts doing the math early on hybrid vehicles, it was believed that many owners of electric-assisted cars would never experience enough savings in fuel to warrant spending extra for the hybrid electric hardware. Thanks to Toyota’s environmentally friendly work with hybrid powertrains, the business case for electric assistance in motoring has become an economical choice. While the Toyota Prius c will not be the cheapest hybrid car available (the 2012 Honda Insight retails at $18,350), the 50-mile per gallon economy hatchback will be in position to influence even entry-level car buyers.

When the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf premiered on the auto show circuit, crowds once surrounding these electrified vehicles as marvels of engineering were later repelled by near obscene vehicle prices. The release of the 2012 Toyota Prius c will be a welcomed change in perception for electric-assisted vehicles.

As expected early this 2012 year, automakers posted some very optimistic sales numbers for the United States marketplace for 2011. A place where consumers still love their cars, 2011 provided an excellent year for North American car fans. No other time in the North American auto industry has motorists been able to explore so much freedom and choice.

In only three years, the American auto industry has turned from forecasted shambles to a rosier, settled environment. Hitting Chrysler and General Motors in the most severe manner, no major auto company was truly immune to the economic troubles started in late 2008. Similar to reaction from the global banking and financial sector, it wasn’t until a key period where the public truly understood until bankruptcy papers were being filed.

The combination of troubled business models and customers losing access to money or car loans needed for purchases led to a disappointing start of the 2009 calendar year. Between seven major automakers selling vehicles in the United States (GM, Ford, Chrysler, Nissan, Honda, Toyota and Hyundai/Kia), auto sales amounted to 9,124,380 cars in all of 2009 (5,145,746 units lower than just two years prior). It was only through a United States government sponsored new car purchase program that the tides began to reverse. Known as “Cash for Clunkers,” motorists were able to trade in an old vehicle for a guaranteed trade-in credit.

After the 12 months of 2011, the same seven automakers have steadily performed better than the disastrous 2009 auto sales year. When the 2011 year ended, 10,987,403 were sold by the seven high volume automakers in the United States. Up 20.4 percent from 2009, the 2011 results continued the gains made after 2010 as some elements of the economy recuperated. Recognizing there is so many reasons to celebrate the improvement of the North American motor vehicle industry, the recent auto sale numbers indicating positive momentum from dismal 2009 figures have shown that the current car business is far from past glory.

The Detroit Three

For automakers Chrysler, Ford and General Motors, six years have seen once-proclaimed Big Three transform into the more modest moniker Detroit Three. In 2005, General Motors led United States car sales handsomely with 4,454,385 vehicles. Thanks to declining sales due to a changing economy and the doom of bankruptcy, 2009 vehicle sales dropped 53.2 percent for GM at just 2,084,492 units. Recovering with auto sales reaching 2,503,820 vehicles after 2011, the improvement comes with the loss of brands Pontiac and Hummer as well as the offloading of the now troubled Saab. The major source for General Motors’ traction in the United States automotive marketplace remains the Chevrolet division with 1,775,812 products sold last year. In 2011, the Chevrolet Cruze accounted for 231,732 of Chevrolet’s sales becoming a star for the auto industry.

In the case of Chrysler Group, a sales drop of 59.6 percent from 2005 to 2009 indicated a particularly volatile presence not seen since the 1979 bankruptcy. Over the past six years, Chrysler was separated from Daimler-Benz, sold to a private equity group, filed bankruptcy and was partly rescued by Italian auto giant Fiat Group. As Chrysler’s 1,369,114 unit sales recovery in 2011 is still almost one million vehicles short of 2005 levels. Chrysler will be relying on vehicles like the 2013 Dodge Dart to entice consumers while also attempting to lure commercial vehicle contracts with the Ram brand that should include at least one new work van in the near future.

While Ford Motor Company escaped the need for government assistance, the past six years has taken the Blue Oval car company on a wild ride. Selling 3,168,156 vehicles in 2005, Ford Motor Company posted 2,148,806 in 2011 sales. As Ford devoted their business back to cars, truck sales have taken a sizable hit. Despite a reduction in truck sales, the Ford F-150 and Ford Escape remain the top-selling vehicles by the carmaker in 2011. Losing Mercury and still struggling to bring Lincoln back to the luxury car forefront challenges Ford’s total recovery. A reborn Ford brand line-up that includes the 2013 Taurus and Fusion sedans plus the 2013 Escape crossover are future vanguards for healthy auto sales.

Some people (even the same ones who originally wished the US government to protect financial institutions with taxpayer dollars) wanted to allow General Motors and Chrysler to succumb to liquidation. Led first by former president George W Bush’s administration with emergency financial aid and later by Barack Obama’s White House directing the needed loans through GM and Chrysler’s bankruptcy, both car companies survived. Wanting to be relieved of the public taunting of phrases such as “Government Motors”, GM and Chrysler paid back the emergency assistance late in 2011. Regardless of political leaning or perhaps free of such constraints, government intervention of the two American auto companies stabilized what could have been a much harsher industry-wide events. What if many more autoworkers would be out of the job? What if the 100th year of Chevrolet had been marred with a giant production blackout continuing to this day? Those and other questions can be answered hypothetically.

US Auto Market for Import Brands

While the mighty Detroit Three restructured their business model, many would believe the Japanese automakers Honda and Toyota have finally entered prime position to eat drastically eat away at the market. However, just like the American based companies, the Japanese carmakers have been suffering similar sales slippage from 2005 levels. Toyota Motor Corporation 2011 auto sales of 1,644,661 units is 27 percent lower than the 2005 year (Toyota fell just short of Chrysler with yearlong sales in 2005). Honda’s United States auto sales have also been noticeably lower at 21.5 percent over 2005 numbers. Third place in US sales among the Japanese carmakers is Nissan. Suffering a drop of about 230,000 vehicles from 2005 to 2009, Nissan pulled an enviable achievement recovering all but around 34,000 units in US sales delivering 1,042,534 vehicles to customers during 2011.

Bucking the trend of the economic hardships felt by leading auto companies was the South Korea’s Hyundai/Kia. In 2009, Hyundai/Kia actually posted a modest growth. Still emerging as a trustworthy company in the United States in 2005, the South Korean entity of Hyundai Motor America and sister group Kia Motors were able to benefit from a slimmer market profile. Kia and Hyundai brands have steadily sailed forward in American auto sales that totalled 1,131,183 vehicles after the 2011 calendar year. Increasing annual sales by 400,000 cars and crossover vehicles 2005 through 2011, records a sensational 54.77 percent increase in sales.

The US Auto Sales Recovery to Date

Despite successes and disappointments, the results of these seven top auto companies (totalling 10,987,403 units in 2011) shows that recovery is not yet a full recuperation to previous years. The point of observing this six-year span of sales numbers in the United States paints a picture of a different time in the auto industry on a continent. From the buzz at the upcoming auto shows, with all the uncertainty that recalls, the latest in advanced propulsion technology, the lessons of the past pushes a stride to former glory or even to a greater future.

After the magnificent display that was the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, I wrote an article on the notion that the California coast was the place automakers preferred to display their latest creations and concepts. Wondering if the 2012 auto show in Detroit would be have the same amount of enthusiasm, the sensory overload-inducing debuts set to occur at this week’s opening of the North American International Auto Show leads me to concludes thoughts of the Motor City becoming less of an industry focal point seems a waste of mental energy. The biggest auto manufacturers of the United States, Japan, Europe and even India are expected to provide an automotive delight.

Ahead of major auto shows, the marketing departments of carmakers are challenged to entice interest in a vehicle debut without giving too much away from the physical spectacle. Leading into the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, various tactics are being rolled out by auto brands. Whether they want to unveil the entire full image of the vehicle or a mere teaser photo, the auto companies are careful in their attempts to grab the attention of media and the overall car-adoring public.

For the 2012 edition of the North American International Auto Show, the following is a few of the production-based 2013 model year vehicles making a world debut:

Toyota Prius c

The smallest member of the now established Prius hybrid family, Toyota plans to capitalize on the high efficiency small car market with what will become North America’s first subcompact gasoline-electric vehicle. Roughly 5 inches longer than the 2012 Yaris, the Toyota Prius c liftback body style is a careful execution of small car values with high technology.

Beyond the Toyota Synergy Drive powertrain technology, the interior of the Prius c will incorporate an array of infotainment solutions thoughtful to the youth market the Japanese-based automaker wants to attract. With Bluetooth standard, optional equipment to be offered on the Toyota Prius c includes Toyota Entune multimedia system. Through Toyota Entune, occupants of the Prius c are given access to traffic and weather updates as well as Pandora Internet radio.

Two vital unknowns remain with the pending introduction at the 2012 auto show. Firstly, what will be the fuel economy expectations from the Toyota Prius c hybrid powertrain? Toyota has indicated a city range of more than 50 miles per gallon is estimated for the smallest Prius. Secondly, when the Prius c reaches showrooms, what can the younger generation of Toyota buyers expect to buy for the subcompact? If placed around the $20,000 range (in between the Yaris and common Prius hybrid), the Toyota Prius c could be a major spoiler to the eco-car marketplace.

Cadillac ATS

No longer the 1950s and 1960s when Cadillac’s hulking convertibles defined American luxury, it’s become the objective of the division in the 21st century to redefine its image among the top premium cars. While not hitting a home run with every new product, Cadillac has cemented a reputation for featuring solid luxury and effective technology on smaller vehicles. Applying their lessons to what will be their smallest production vehicle since the disastrous Cimarron of the 1980s, the 2013 Cadillac ATS will be the General Motors division latest test in the modern luxury car marketplace.

The Cadillac ATS has expected to be the most vibrant display of compact vehicle refinement of their new car line-up at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Through the teaser image, we can expect to see the 2013 Cadillac ATS to resemble its bigger brother CTS sedan. One of the more compelling characteristics of the compact car is the use of an all-new rear wheel drive platform. Specifically aiming at the BMW 3-Series and the Mercedes-Benz C Class, the Cadillac ATS sedan will have a strong assortment of engine power to support what should be a fierce luxury car battle. To offer three powerplant choices, the 2013 ATS will offer a 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engine, the 3.6 liter V-6 already found on Cadillac products and a new 270-horsepower, turbocharged 2-liter engine to debut in the vehicle.

The 2013 Cadillac ATS will also feature available Magnetic Ride Control suspension and the brand’s latest CUE in-car infotainment system.

Ford Fusion

The third-highest selling vehicle in the Ford Motor Company behind the Ford F-150 and the Ford Escape, the Fusion exists in the narrow but important market segment of mid-sized family sedans.

Kept under a great deal of secrecy by the auto company, there has not even been as much as a teaser shot ushered out for the 2013 Ford Fusion. Unsure of how radical or tame the 2013 Fusion styling will be on the four-door sedan, observers at the unveiling should expect Ford to advertise the new vehicle’s improved fuel economy and technology. Judging from the discontinuation of the Escape hybrid with the 2013 model year vehicle, a hybrid version of the new Ford Fusion might not be a guarantee. What should be certain with the 2013 Fusion’s powertrain is the inclusion of an EcoBoost engine (likely the 2-liter, four-cylinder powerplant). Based on the competition in the vehicle category, expect the all-wheel drive option to return as a substitute to standard front-wheel power. New technology expected on the upcoming Ford Fusion’s interior is an available Lane Keeping System and the revised version of MyFord Touch.

Ahead of the 2012 North American International Auto Show debut, Ford provided potential customers a chance to interact with the 2013 model year sedan through a unique mobile app. Available free for Apple iPhone and Android devices at fordfusionapp.com, the app supplies an experience with 19 unlockable driving courses through augmented reality. When the 2013 Ford Fusion is presented on January 10^th, users of the Ford Fusion mobile app will be able to witness full images of the new car.

Dodge Dart

With close automobile rivals Chevrolet and Ford staking claims to the subcompact car category, Chrysler Corporation’s Dodge division stood on the sidelines unable to compete. Though many automotive photographers were able to snap spy shots of a proposed small car based on the Dodge Hornet concept for years, corporate restructuring of the auto company has tightened resources for new car debuts. Reactivating a long-running Dodge nameplate, the Chrysler Group’s subcompact 2013 Dart will be targeting the growing entry-level car segment.

Teasing automotive enthusiasts with the same successful spoon-feeding of images that welcomed the 2011 Dodge Durango’s return, only a front corner and interior panel shot defines the 2013 Dodge Dart leading into this year‘s North American International Auto Show. The first all-new product created for the North American market by Chrysler through its 2009 collaboration with Fiat Group, the 2013 Dodge Dart rests on the same compact platform as the Alfa Romeo Giulietta. While the Giulietta is a hatchback, the 2013 Dodge Dart making its debut in Detroit will be a more Americanized four-door sedan shape. Conforming to the Dodge brand identity, the Dart will be aggressively styled with touches found on the new Dodge Charger. Mechanicals for the 2013 Dodge Dart is likely to include a 1.4 liter and 2-liter engine with an available 9-speed automatic transmission.

The smallest vehicle in a brand line-up, the 2013 Dodge Dart will perhaps face the fiercest fight in the modern car industry. Ford Fiesta, Chevy Sonic, Hyundai Accent and Toyota Yaris have either new or redesigned products each providing competitive powertrains, standard equipment and fuel economy.

Nissan Pathfinder Concept

Nissan’s most enduring SUV (sport utility vehicle) brand, the Pathfinder lived up to its name since debuting in 1986. In constant production since introduction, the Nissan Pathfinder’s ability to connect with the North American consumer led the Japan-derived brand to share the Pathfinder name briefly with the large Amanda SUV. Rolling out at the 2012 North American International Auto Show as a concept vehicle, the exterior design for Nissan’s latest generation of the Pathfinder should remain close to the production model set for release later this year.

A four-wheel drive set to offer seating for seven passengers, the Nissan Pathfinder Concept will feature a refreshed exterior design. A more aerodynamic look than the predecessor model, the teaser photo of the Pathfinder Concept unveils a roof similar to the Nissan Quest minivan and body panels featuring aggressive flaring like the Juke. Buyers of the next generation Nissan Pathfinder should feel confident that the powerplant options should consist of the VQ series six-cylinder and the VK series eight-cylinder engine.

Users of Facebook will be some of the first observers to see the Nissan Pathfinder Concept. After 8:30am on Monday, Facebook users who log into the Nissan page will be able to view the new vehicle after clicking on the “Pathfinder Reveal” tab.

When Toyota introduced the Yaris subcompact back in 2007, it was welcomed with open arms. Not only were gas prices beginning to climb again, but it was replacing the Echo, which was, for the most part, a flop. Despite getting a similar powertrain and fuel economy that didn’t quite match the Echo’s (although they’ve since made up for it,) it was better in almost every way. Over the last few years, however, sales have begun to slow due to more competitive options from other brands. So for 2012, Toyota gives us the third generation Yaris…

New for 2012

Completely redesigned inside and out, the 2012 Toyota Yaris brings some significant changes to their least expensive car. To say that the changes are significant is a major understatement, as the entire car has been overhauled to get rid of the old Yaris’ cheap econo-box feel and give buyers a sense that they’re driving something a little more premium. Take a look at some of the comparison photos:

As you can see, it looks like a real car now. No awkward center-mounted gauge cluster, higher quality materials, no weird (albeit charming) vertically-positioned climate controls, and most of all, much better design inside and out. One interesting and fortunate change is the deletion of the sedan – for 2012, only the 2- and 4-door hatchback models are available. Not everybody’s going to like that, but it’s a segment that should be defined by efficiency, and that’s where hatchbacks excel. And now that hatches are no longer the ugly child, I don’t see that being a major issue.

You can’t see it from the pictures, but the 2012 Yaris is also extended a few inches in length, allowing for more cargo room (up from 9 cubic feet to 15.6 with the rear seats up.) That’s a huge improvement, although it’s still less than some competitors.

One thing that didn’t change from last year is the powertrain – the Yaris is still powered by Toyota’s 1.5-liter four-cylinder, producing 106 hp through a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. This test car had the manual, which I highly prefer over the antiquated automatic I drove a couple years ago (same transmission in this one.) Clutch pedal travel is consistent and smooth, and shifting is easy, except the shift from fourth gear to fifth, which requires a more precise and time-consuming “up-right-up” movement instead of the typical “up-and-to-the-right.” Despite being the same engine and transmission, they were able to squeeze a few more MPGs out this year, bringing the numbers up to 30 city/38 hwy mpg in the manual from 29/36. Opt for the old-fashioned automatic trans and it drops to 30/35. Also changed this year is the suspension, which Toyota gave a thorough tuning to give the car a more solid drive. It’s noticeable, and even though the car still doesn’t corner like a hot hatch, it feels more confident and stable in the turns and at high speed.

The interior redesign in the 2012 Yaris is a huge deal. You’re no longer constantly reminded of the fact that you’re driving an econo-hatch. The steering wheel actually has buttons on it (SE trim,) and it’s even flattened a bit at the bottom and contoured for real-life human hands. The seats feel like actual, bolstered seats, not cloth-wrapped plywood, and most of the touch points are covered in soft material. There’s still no sunglasses holder up above, but you can store them in one of the two cubbies in the center console area (no covered console,) one of the four cupholders within reach, or attach them to the sun visor, which extends when needed (something some Lexuses don’t even have.)

Pricing & Options

The 2012 Toyota Yaris’ price gets bumped a bit this year, thanks to, well, a much better car, and quite a bit more standard equipment. The base L trim starts at $14,115. Stepping into the LE will cost you $15,625 and bags you power windows, remote keyless entry, a 6-way adjustable driver seat, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, a better interior trim, a 60/40-split fold-down rear seat (the L just has a bench seat,) Bluetooth, and an upgraded sound system. The SE trim, which we drove, will start at $16,400 and gets you bigger 16-inch wheels with sport-tuned suspension and four-wheel disc brakes, cruise control, an upgraded upholstery (which you can see in the photos,) smoke-trim headlamps, fog lamps, color-keyed grille with sport mesh insert, color-keyed front and rear underbody spoilers, rear spoiler and rear diffuser, and a chrome exhaust tip. Your only option in the 2012 Yaris is cruise control, and only on the LE trim. It’s standard on the SE and you simply can’t get it in the L.

Again, there’s no getting around the fact that you’re driving a cheap car, but they’ve made it much less obvious this year. The car is actually fun to drive, handles well, and since the measly engine doesn’t have to carry around much weight (it’s actually lighter than last year,) it feels peppy so long as you’re driving the manual.

Before You Buy

Make sure to check out the Yaris’ competitors, which are better at some things and worse at others, as usual. The Honda Fit, Nissan Versa, and Hyundai Accent all have a little more cargo room, while only the Accent beats out the Yaris in fuel economy (and power.) Definitely check out the new Hyundai Accent – on paper, it’s one of your best bets this year. The Ford Fiesta and Mazda2 are also worth taking a look at.

The Japanese auto industry shutdown not only slowed productivity on the Asian island but surged worldwide as vital vehicles and parts were unable to flow out of the country for almost a month. Possessing large North American assembly capacity, American and Canadian workers at Honda as well as Nissan plants operated under reduced capacity for months following the disaster. For Honda, it wasn’t until August when Honda’s supply to North American plants for the Civic and Accord returned to full capacity. Nissan’s success could be owed to sizeable amounts of part and vehicle sources outside of Japan. However, the electric Nissan Leaf’s production in Japan slowed the distribution of the very hot new vehicle.

While Japanese auto companies returned to normality over the summer of 2011 in the production of vehicles, the effects of the earthquake and tsunami left these companies in-line with their national community. Five of the major Japanese auto manufacturers immediately donated the equivalent of over 13 million dollars US of aid on top of other provisions including blankets, generators and forklifts. To some, cars are appliances; a way to get you to from point A to point B. For others, cars are an emotional experience; actually enjoying getting from point A to point B, with a smile on your face when you start the engine. For the most part Toyota has made appliances; soulless vehicles. That kind of worry-free (except for all the recalls….but we digress) nature appeals to a lot of people. But, for a brand to thrive and do well it needs to attract all types; enthusiasts that are excited about what the company is doing.

Models aimed at enthusiasts helped create a trickle down effect for the rest of the company. Apparently, Toyota has realized this and is putting an effort into making its cars more fun to drive. The 86 (Scion FR-S), co-developed with Subaru, is the first example of this. The first, but not the only, if chief engineer Tetsuya Tada has anything to do with it.

Speaking with The Sydney Morning Herald, Tada said he sees a three-tier Toyota sports car lineup. The 86 would sit in the middle, with a smaller car below it (MR2, Celica?) and a new full-on sports car as a successor to the Supra. It’s about time Toyota got back into this segment! A new Supra would likely go head-to-head with the Nissan 370Z. Nothing has been confirmed, but if Chief Executive Officer Akio Toyoda really means what he says about radical change at Toyota, we think its a good bet.

Tada said Toyoda was keen on doing the project “if the numbers added up.” Auto companies do the best when there is a car guy at the top pushing through projects that are truly appealing. Toyoda was apparently very involved with the development of the 86, so this shouldn’t be any different. One thing is for sure: we know bean counters and design-by-committee teams just never work out well in the auto industry.

Inside, the Toyota Fun-Vii concept car explores near limitless potential for digital interaction with the vehicle user. Thought to be a way of differentiating the Subaru version apart from the Toyota sports car, the production BRZ will arrive only as a rear-wheel drive.

For Subaru, the BRZ marks the brand’s first homecoming to the true sport car market since the discontinuation of the SVX in 1997. Accompanied by a drop in customer demand in its final year of production, the fact Subaru ended up producing their halo vehicle at a financial loss left the appearance of a sports coupe successor understandably off the books for the Japanese auto company.

Perhaps learning a lesson from the SVX, the Subaru BRZ joint construction with Toyota Motor Corporation assured financial violability retuning to the sports car marketplace. Estimated to have a starting cost below $30,000, the Subaru BRZ will be seen as a competitive entrant to a going sector of small sports coupes that includes the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Mazda MX-5 and MINI Coupe.

A car that enthusiasts have been waiting on for a long time has arrived. For quite some time, rumors have swirled about a Toyota/Subaru partnership over a small rear-wheel drive sports car. Toyota and Subaru are in cooperation, and both have been looking for a new performance model to bring some excitement into their lineups.

For Toyota in particular, the need is urgent. The company has virtually nothing to offer enthusiasts, and its older trending clientele has caused head executives to conclude the lineup needs to offer a more engaging driving experience, as well as more compelling design. It’s about time!

After being talked about endlessly and teased with a variety of concepts, the Toyota sports car has been made official at the Tokyo Auto Show, dubbed the GT 86. The GT 86 was just launched in the United Kingdom. Here in the United States, the powers at be decided the car would be sold under the youth-oriented Scion brand.

We think the Toyota brand needs the excitement, but we digress. WIth this car, Toyota has proclaimed that “passion is back.” Stylistically, the car looks similar to what we have been seeing for a few years. The front end has horizontal headlights and a sculpted, downward pointing front end that lacks a grille in between the headlights. That sets it apart a bit. Instead, it has a large lower grille.

There are haunches around the back, with some clear taillights lenses integrated in. The rear-wheel drive proportions are the nice thing; the details are a bit immature. Boy racer? Kind of. It will probably translate better in person. We’re guessing most will care more about the GT-86′s driving experience though.

Under the hood is a 2.0-liter boxer four-cylinder with direct-injection; it is naturally-aspirated and makes 197 horsepower. Some say that is on the low side, but the point is the GT-86 is a blank canvas for those to make it their own; modify, tune, etc. If its lightweight (a big if) the numbers shouldn’t be too shabby out of the box either. The engine is mated to your choice of a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

With a 53:47 weight distribution, Toyota says the car has “precise, instant response to the smallest throttle and steering inputs.” That is all meant to appeal “to those for whom driving is a passion, not a necessity.” Toyota is hoping the car catches on in a big way with enthusiasts at a grass roots level. To us it seems like a throwback; a minimal use of computerization and a focus on the driver being in connection with the road. Do you think it lives up to the hype? Aston Martin Cygnet

Based on the Toyota iQ platform, the Aston Martin Cygnet is not quite what you would expect from one of the world’s leading luxury vehicle manufacturers. And at a starting price of £30,995 (~$49,595 US), it’s not entirely aimed at the traditional super compact buyers either. Fortunately, Aston Martin carries a brand fully capable of marketing rare and expensive vehicles to small market niches. Few individuals will have the opportunity to indulge in the upgraded styling and feature set of the Cygnet, making it the perfect super compact luxury car for the upscale city dweller.

Filling the heads of weekend outdoors warriors with enviable thoughts of early Saturday morning, a crew cab version of the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD indulges the 2011 SEMA Show’s desert city crowd. A collective effort involving popular outdoor company Realtree, customized pickup truck features extreme four-wheel drive capability. Wearing exclusive graphics promoting the outdoor theme, the Silverado Realtree is painted with a Champagne Silver Metallic colour. Exterior modifications exercised on the Silverado Realtree Concept include a front bumper with winch and a custom rear cap. The Chevrolet Silverado interior for the Realtree features Dark Cocoa leather decked with camouflage and bright orange accentuations. Though the Realtree Concept version of the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD sports a lot of grit, there is some civility in place to improve occupants’ entry and exit. A power-actuated running board is fitted to the Silverado Realtree Concept.

Ram 392 Quick Silver

For those who were afraid that Chrysler’s full-sized pickup truck would lose the occasional venture into creating muscle trucks (street performance oriented vehicles) when the Ram brand was formed, the 2011 SEMA Show has a reason to remember Dodge truck greatness including the SRT-10 and Rumble Bee versions.

Dropping the SRT line 6.4 liter, 470-horsepower V-8 powerplant into a 2011 Ram R/T pickup, the work of Mopar Underground commenced in developing the corresponding image for the Ram 392 Quick Silver. Borrowing some styling inspiration from the Dodge Charger SRT8, the Ram 392 Quick Silver receives a bulging aluminum hood incorporating working heat extractors. Over the truck’s box, a tonneau cover with an integrated spoiler gives the sport truck a better aerodynamic profile. Three-stage bright silver, with exception to gloss black colour treatment to the pickup‘s roof, solidifies the Ram 392 Quick Silver nameplate. The employment of a Mopar body kit and body-colour matching Brembo brake calipers add a street sporty look delighting tarmac runners (at the expense of a few off-roader). Serving as a contrast to the monochrome look, anodized red paint is applied to the Ram 392 Quick Silver’s 22-inch wheels, side mirrors as well as on the front grille inserts. The entire Ram 392 Quick Silver concept rides 2 inches lower than the Ram R/T truck thanks to a custom suspension further articulating the low profile appearance created by the Mopar body kit.
