Satellite radio, electronic GPS guidance and even wireless Internet connections on several luxury products provide a mere tip of the iceberg to what is currently available to vehicle occupants.

An exhibition that coincided with the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas provided a spotlight on all things high technology. Countless tablet computers, WiFi digital cameras and smartphones were the common spectacle of future electronics. Tempering with the usual balance of the CES in Las Vegas, representatives for the 20th century’s most pivotal invention (the automobile), brought some cutting-edge solutions for the 21st century’s demanding mobile technology world. In fact, Ford Motor Company took an innovation award away from the 2012 CES for their latest MyFord Mobile App.

On several occasions during the 2012 technology show in Las Vegas, a term began to swirl over automotive company products at a higher frequency than ever. The use of the term “The Cloud” was inserted into the presentation of several devices for the future of automotive infotainment. Instead of storing electronic programs and files on a physical hard drive or disk, information is stored through a virtual space called the “cloud”. As in-car electronic systems (most notably navigation services) progressed from the use of DVDs to hard drives that well surpasses many tablet PCs, the venture to the cloud for auto equipment manufacturers means limitless possibilities. The introduction of cloud computing principles have grown most prevalently with the popular navigation program called Google Maps employed on systems including the Ford SYNC and Audi MMI. Unlike previous GPS systems that either stored limited information or require time-consuming updates through a home computer, Google Maps uses a cloud interface to calculate routes. At the recent 2012 CES exhibition, auto companies are certainly becoming wiser to high-flying cloud computing ideals.

Making use of the open world of the cloud, Mercedes-Benz unveiled an upgraded version of their mbrace telematics suite of security and comfort connectivity features set for introduction starting the new SL roadster in the 2013 model year. An enhanced service, mbrace2 expands its reach in providing Mercedes-Benz occupants with a richer, even more connected electronic experience. Facebook, Yelp and Google Local Search are some Apps users of mbrace2 can expect immediately. Based on a cloud-based system, the mbrace2 system can be easily and conveniently updated allowing for delivery of an even greater selection of Apps in the future. The one necessity of cloud computing is a constant wireless connection. For the Mercedes-Benz mbrace2 system, Verizon will provide the subscribed service as it rolls out early this year.

With much of the auto sector devoted to the development of exclusive in-car infotainment solutions (i.e. MyFord Touch, Cadillac CUE, and Kia UVO), the outside stereo and car entertainment suppliers appear to have lost leverage on the marketplace. Other than the units created in-house or through partnerships, Aha by HARMAN have been making some serious inroads on the automotive infotainment market utilizing a cloud-platform. Launched as an iPhone App in 2009 as Aha Mobile, the web-based platform delivers an array of interactive products. Internet radio, navigation-related information, as well as audio dictation of Facebook and Twitter messaging is obtained through the Aha Mobile App that will also soon be joining the Android device marketplace. While Pioneer introduced the first automotive stereo system to incorporate Aha by HARMAN technology, the growth of the brand depends on forging relationships with the automakers.

During the 2012 CES, Subaru and Honda will be the first OEM deployment of Aha by HARMAN technology in the North American market. Demonstrated on a 2013 Subaru BRZ sports car at the 2012 CES exhibition in Las Vegas, the vehicle presented the new web-based entertainment options available through Aha by HARMAN. In the case of Subaru, customers can expect Aha by HARMAN to become part of what will be a “fourth band” of car radio joining AM, FM and satellite radio options on future vehicles.

Cloud computing principles will most definitely affect the evolution of an already growing market for in-car infotainment electronics. Late in 2011, Ford announced a brand-new MyFord Touch infotainment suite for their upcoming 2013 model year vehicles. As they outfit future products with the new in-car system, previous owners of Ford products featuring the first-generation MyFord Touch are being provided with an upgrade through a USB stick. While not a terribly labour intensive task, cloud computing solutions in automobiles would allow updates and improvements to be conducted near seamlessly.

For automotive consumers, cloud computing could unveil a reality where a car or truck could feature the same technological flexibility as an Apple iPad. Numerous Apps, limitless music and media storage, the most current road maps possible as well as effortless data sharing are advantages cloud-based vehicles can provide. Along with the expansive abilities of cloud-based in-car technology, new features such as voice recognition can be modified through software upgrades allowing motorists to immediately experience the advancements of technology (no longer a prize reserved for the purchaser of the newest vehicle). Among the only possible downside could be privacy and security of cloud-based systems. While all automotive uses of cloud computing engages methods to properly protect information, the future is as wide open as the cloud network for debate on this very accessible data.

The cloud computing integration with automobiles could also mean a buyer trading in their vehicle can take more than the custom floor mats and the air freshener with them to the next automotive upgrade. Contingent on the fact a buyer stays with a single auto manufacturer (at least for the time being), it will be highly likely all unique Apps and set-up information can be seamlessly passed to the next vehicle.

Information source: Ford Motor Company, HARMAN International Industries, Mercedes-Benz USA, Subaru

Photo source: Mercedes-Benz USA, Pioneer, Subaru

Related posts:

Laser Beams into Automotive Lighting Future

Mercedes F-CELL Roadster – Trainees Build A Car Of The Future

Look Who’s Talking: An Automotive Safety Future

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Next-Generation Subaru WRX To Get Turbocharged Engine From BRZ

Car News

Subaru

BRZ

Impreza

Subaru BRZ

Subaru Impreza

Subaru WRX

Subaru WRX STI

WRX

WRX STI

Toyota has been getting most of the attention for the new 86 (Scion FR-S) sports car, but Subaru played a huge part of the development process. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

Currently, the WRX is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder making 265 horsepower. Next time around, it will drop to 2.0-liters, adding 5 hp while improving fuel efficiency. The FA20 engine in the BRZ is lighter, more compact and more fuel efficient than any of Subaru’s engines.

It uses an advanced D4S direct and port fuel injection system that helps it improve economy. The engine is a different series than the 2.0-liter unit in the current Impreza. That will give the next-gen WRX and STI a step further in separation from the standard Impreza. This will separate WRX and STI from the Impreza line even further; the company recently dropped the “Impreza WRX” name. Look for the next-generation car to have more distinctive styling as wellg.

News about a turbocharged variant of the FA20 engine is quite interesting, because it means that turbocharging could be added to the BRZ (and Toyota 86/Scion FR-S) quite easily. For now executives don’t want to talk about that possibility, but we’d be shocked if something didn’t come of it. Enthusiasts are begging for more power in these rear-wheel drive cars, and we think Subaru and Toyota will be happy to oblige….they just aren’t confirming anything right now. Makes sense, why reduce sales right now by confirming anything? Besides, the aftermarket will provide some solutions I’m sure.

Related posts:

Prodrive P2: The Evil Subaru

Subaru Impreza WRC2008 To Debut At Acropolis Rally

UK Subaru Impreza & Forester Diesel With 6-speed Tranny

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Production Bound Subaru BRZ Sports Car Debuts in Tokyo

Car Design

Car News

Subaru

Tokyo Motor Show

Toyota

2012 Subaru

2012 Subaru BRZ

sports car

Subaru BRZ

Subaru BRZ sports car

Toyota GT-86

Toyota sports car

Toyota Subaru

The most eagerly awaited since the partnership between Subaru and Toyota was forged in 2006, a development process creating a pair of entry-level sports cars evoked attention of both brand customers. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

The most eagerly awaited since the partnership between Subaru and Toyota was forged in 2006, a development process creating a pair of entry-level sports cars evoked attention of both brand customers. Since October of 2009, the concept Toyota FT-86 made a strong indication for what Japanese motoring fans can expect from the anticipated sport vehicle. Presented as the BRZ STI Concept at locales including the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, the production Subaru sports car was finally introduced for this year’s Tokyo Motor Show.

Debuting at the same time show that the Toyota GT-86 (to be known as the Scion FR-S in North American), the Subaru BRZ two-door, 2+2 sports car is a bold presentation for the Japanese auto badge that had resisted this personal performance vehicle category for many years.

At a distance, the ability to distract the exterior differences between the Toyota and Subaru vehicles will only come easy to an astute automotive observer. Appearing very close to the concept version of the BRZ, the production sport car’s mature Subaru details are detected on the lower front fascia that includes a hexagon grille and distinctive fog light housings. Detectable ahead of the cabin doors are chrome, stylized side louvers. Just 170 inches in total length, the Subaru BRZ is 4 inches shorter than a Scion tC but 2.8 inches longer than the Nissan 370Z sports car. Weighing less than 2,700 pounds, the low, sleek look for the Subaru BRZ is intentional to foster a fun to drive, sporty feel. A set of 17-inch aluminum wheels are wrapped with the rubber of competent performance tires.

Compared to the vehicle that Americans will know as the Scion FR-S, the Subaru’s interior is likely going to be a slightly more upscale look. Driver-oriented, the BRZ’s tachometer with digital speedometer is planted in the center of the gauge cluster. Combined with a compact-sized, auto racing style steering wheel, the Subaru BRZ interior experience is also provoked with comfortable sport seating in the front.

Powered by a horizontally-opposed 2-liter boxer engine, the traditional Subaru engine design is reinforced by Toyota’s expertise in technology that includes direct injection. Cleverly positioned to optimize the lowest center of gravity possible, 200 horsepower and 151 pounds-feet of torque will be pumping from the BRZ’s boxer powerplant. Not incredibly peppy in torque development, the Subaru BRZ’s engine be companioned with a pair of transmissions insuring firm and smooth delivery. Certain to entice the sport compact crowd will be testing the performance limits of the Subaru BRZ is the six-speed manual gearbox designed for short stroke shifting. For drivers preferring a more relaxed experience behind the wheel, the BRZ will become the first North American release of a 6-speed automatic transmission on a Subaru. Selecting ‘M’ mode on the automatic will allow manual shifting of the Subaru BRZ sports car through the automatic transmission.

With introduction to the marketplace planned in spring of 2012, there are already rumoured plans relating to the two-door Subaru offering. Plans of adding Impreza WRX-style turbocharged power to the BRZ is believed to be on the tables for the next model year. Horsepower estimates for a turbocharged Subaru BRZ is around the 300 range. Prior to the Subaru BRZ sports car’s official presentation in Tokyo, some speculation had also insisted on all-wheel drive as a possibility. Thought to be a way of differentiating the Subaru version apart from the Toyota sports car, the production BRZ will arrive only as a rear-wheel drive.

For Subaru, the BRZ marks the brand’s first homecoming to the true sport car market since the discontinuation of the SVX in 1997. Accompanied by a drop in customer demand in its final year of production, the fact Subaru ended up producing their halo vehicle at a financial loss left the appearance of a sports coupe successor understandably off the books for the Japanese auto company.

Perhaps learning a lesson from the SVX, the Subaru BRZ joint construction with Toyota Motor Corporation assured financial violability retuning to the sports car marketplace. Estimated to have a starting cost below $30,000, the Subaru BRZ will be seen as a competitive entrant to a going sector of small sports coupes that includes the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Mazda MX-5 and MINI Coupe.

Information and photo source: Subaru of America

Related posts:

Virtually Profound: Toyota Fun-Vii Debuts at Tokyo Motor Show

Next-Generation Subaru WRX To Get Turbocharged Engine From BRZ

Subaru SVX Set To Return?

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Subaru XV Crossover Sets Destination for Europe; US in Future

Car News

Frankfurt Motor Show

Not in the States

Subaru

2011 frankfurt motor show

crossover

Subaru XV

XV crossover

Perhaps foreseeing a blurring of automotive categories, Subaru was an early adapter of truck-like attributes to their cars. Remembering the old Subaru commercials of Australian actor Paul Hogan fleeing across off-road trails in the first-generation Outback and Forester give the perspective of a capable new image for the Japanese auto brand in the 1990s. Taller profile and all-wheel drive systems introduced on the Subaru could be credited to breeding products now known as crossover vehicles. As the crossover segment has evolved into several vehicle categories, major automakers now have multiple models to compete for the sizable global market.

For the European market where small, fuel-efficient crossover vehicles are in fashion, the Subaru XV was presented at this past month’s 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. A dignified yet sporty product, the Subaru XV compact crossover vehicle preserves the more car-based demeanour. Said to harness the creative direction Subaru designers ventured in the Protren concept, the Subaru XV crossover presents their “Confidence in Motion” stance. With exception of riding on a noticeably high ground clearance, the XV crossover reveals the fun to drive look of the Subaru Impreza. A careful use of body cladding highlights the wheel openings as well as the lower rocker panels to deepen the car connection with the Subaru XV crossover vehicle.

With passenger room for five, careful planning inside the Subaru XV insures space used most effectively. Starting with sizable door openings for passengers as well as cargo, entering and exiting the Subaru XV is accomplished with minimal discomfort. Subaru instrument and control design inside the compact crossover vehicle is also created with a focus on conveying roominess. The Subaru XV cabin features an optional 4.3 inch, full-colour Multi-Function Display with information on ‘eco-driving’ and other important details. Protecting the occupants, the crossover is equipped with a multitude of standard airbags including a driver’s knee device.

The European version Subaru XV is powered by their latest batch of Boxer engine propulsion using gasoline or diesel fuel. Smaller than the engines North American customers are used to at the showroom, the gasoline-burning powerplants range in size of 1.6 and 2-liters in displacement. A diesel engine choice is also available on the Subaru XV. For the European marketplace, diesel-powered vehicles have actually outsold gasoline equivalents of the same automotive product. Dual Active Valve Control System (AVCS) and Auto Start Stop technology carefully and efficiently extracts power from the Subaru XV Boxer engine.

The Subaru XV compact crossover’s engine power is derived through a Lineartronic CVT unit boasting lightness and high fuel economy. Fuel economy for array of Subaru Boxer powerplants is yet to be revealed. The presence of all-wheel drive is guaranteed to make the XV a formidable traveler in various challenging road conditions.

While the Subaru will be found in European markets (pleasing the car dealers Edinburgh residents frequent), the plans for sending the XV compact crossover to North America is not immediate. Reports have the Subaru XV coming stateside but will not arrive until at least the 2013 model year. Resting on a wheelbase about 0.7 inches wider than a Subaru Impreza and 4.4 inches shorter in overall length compared to a Forester, the Subaru XV positioning could be complex placement in their model line-up. In Europe and Australia, the new compact crossover vehicle should be ready for release early next year.

Information and photo source: Subaru Global

Related posts:

Next-Generation Subaru WRX To Get Turbocharged Engine From BRZ

Saab Story Including GM Continues with 9-4X Crossover

Audi Releases Sketches of Q3 Crossover

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

2011 Subaru WRX STI Review

Car Reviews

Subaru

AWD

featured

rally

STi

turbo

WRX

There I was, typing away on the computer in my office. Juggling Gmail, Facebook, and real work, unable to really concentrate; a typical afternoon – except this one was a little bit different. Anxiously waiting, knowing what was headed my way in only a few short minutes. I’ve been waiting over a year for this.

Then it happened – I hear a knock coming from the other room and jump up from my chair. The brisk walk to my front door and my excitement remind me of my younger self waking up on Christmas morning and running down to see what’s under the tree. A peek out the window reveals the prize: a brand-spanking-new 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI. I could imagine it wrapped with a big red bow tie.

“Be cool, Chris.” I calmly open the door to the driver from Subaru handing me the keys. I look at them for a moment, as if it’s the first time I’ve seen a set of car keys, before looking back up and sloppily signing the sheet of paper that says a bunch of stuff about not driving drunk, no smoking in the car…the usual. I rush over and take a lustful glance over the new Subie.

Luckily, Subaru brought back the 4-door sedan for 2011, along with its gaudy but charming wing. Normally I’m not a fan of either – but in this case, it works, for some reason. It’s blue, as every WRX should be, sporting attractive gunmetal 18-inch BBS alloys. Not the traditional blue/gold combo we love seeing, but they’re good wheels. An aggressive wide-body kit sets it apart from the comparatively bland Impreza, and the redesigned front and rear bumpers separate it from last year’s model. Seeing the hood scoop – knowing it feeds air directly into the high-cross-flow intercooler – is too much to bear. I must drive it. Now.

Hopping inside is familiar and comfortable. Not much different from the 2010 WRX STI, although this one is the top-of-the-line Limited trim level, dressed up in black leather with red stitching (to include embroidered “STI” logos in the two front headrests,) a special STI steering wheel, and specially-designed electroluminescent gauges to give me all the vitals. Looking around, there isn’t much to see. That’s part of the beauty in this car. So few frills and doo-dads cluttering up your space, you get to focus on what’s really important – like the SI-Drive knob, allowing me to switch between Sport, Sport Sharp, and Automatic modes, and the Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD) that lets you manually adjust – you got it – the differential. Man this car is cool!

Throwing in the clutch and turning the key sparks up the 2.5-liter, turbocharged Boxer engine, which lights up with a firm growl, then calms to a low rumble. This things sounds good for a four-banger. Sounds good period. I casually switch it into Sport Sharp mode, tightening up the car’s throttle response and fuel and ignition curves – and it’s noticeable. Why would anyone want any other mode than Sport Sharp? Sadly, it turns out the car defaults to the boring old Sport mode every time. Would it be so hard to hold a default? I keep the fancy DCCD in Auto – I’ll leave the differential adjustments to the pros for now. Off we go…

The urge to do this is unbearable

Sadly, I don’t happen to have a rally course around my apartments, but I do have a stretch of fun windy roads that twist around a big lake. The car instantly brings out my inner twelve-year-old. It’s like riding a roller coaster that I control. The stupid smile doesn’t leave my face as I drive way too fast for my own safety. But this thing does not…let…go. Subaru’s Symmetrical AWD system grips the road with what seems to be physics-defying traction, and allow you to throw yourself into corners that don’t seem possible. Do a near-redline clutch-drop from a stop and the tires grasp on to those 305 horsepower like they’re nothing. Then they rocket you to 60 mph in a mind-blowing 4.5 seconds. That’s faster than an Aston Martin V8 Vantage. And this, my friends, is why I could never own this car; I would end up killing myself. But at least that smile would never leave my face. It doesn’t hurt that all WRXs for 2011 are given wider tires for even more grip in the twisties, and the STIs get better suspension bushings, larger front and rear stabilizer bars, and stiffer coil springs. As if STIs needed better handling…not that I’m complaining. No wonder STI owners are in love with their cars.

Driving this car is an excellent experience itself. The sound of the exhaust is cool, shifting gears is tight and definite, and the clutch is perfect. Steering is…needless to say…near-telepathic in response and gives the perfect amount of feedback from the road. Acceleration is a blast, and although you do feel some lag from the turbos, it isn’t bad.

Now, let’s pretend for a moment that you won’t be driving your STI like a raped ape every second you’re in the driver’s seat. As an everyday driver, you’d expect any car that performs this well to be a pain in the ass (literally) on your morning commute. Au contraire. The leather-wrapped seats in the Limited trim (leather/Alcantara on base trim,) hold you firmly in place without feeling like you’re sitting on granite. Normal driving, if left in Sport or Automatic mode, is surprisingly comfortable. Yes, the suspension is still tight, and the exhaust is still loud, but it’s completely livable. And incredibly, you will often forget you’re actually driving a four-door, four-seater sedan with impressive space in the back for passengers. It feels like a much smaller car.

And that is precisely what amazes me about this car. It’s easy to buy a great two-seater coupe with no storage space or a four-seat coupe with no rear legroom. It’s easy to buy a four-door sedan that you’d rather watch grass grow than drive. The point is that most cars have to compromise something to be whatever they are. The STI isn’t like that. It’s every bit as good at driving fast and corning hard as it is fitting a few friends or family members in the back while carrying home a trip full of groceries. It simply does not compromise anything. This, of course, is assuming that you’re OK with life without some of the electronic gizmos and extra buttons you find pasted all over modern cars. Me…I prefer it that way. It makes me focus on what’s most important: the driving. Trust me, downshift into second into a corner at 45 mph and lay on the throttle. You won’t be thinking about the lack of a laser-guided cruise control.

Having said that, it does include stuff we’ve come to expect in modern cars like HID headlights, standard bluetooth, heated seats, auxiliary audio jacks, security, power windows/locks/etc with remote entry and steering wheel-mounted audio controls.

All of this praise doesn’t mean the WRX STI is all rainbows and unicorns; it does have a few flaws. The nav system, for example, is completely worthless. Save your $1800 and buy a decent one. The standard audio unit kind of sucks too, but at least you didn’t have to plunk down an extra $2K on it. Fuel economy on the STI is 17 city, 23 hwy mpg, which isn’t great until you consider damn the thing goes from zero to sixty in 4.5 freaking seconds. Drop down into the regular, 265hp WRX (with a 5-speed manual instead of a 6-speed,) and you’ll notice around 19/25 mpg – 2 mpg better on average (hardly worth the drop in power.)

The 2011 Subaru WRX starts at around $25,500. That’s for 265 hp, a 5-speed manual, and the basics. Adding on options and packages brings it up to just under $30,000. Jump up into the STI (please do) for $34,000 and you’ll get 40 more hp, a sixth gear, better suspension and handling, the SI-Drive system, better brakes, bigger wheels, HIDs, sport exhaust, footwell lighting, adjustable differential, STI-design stuff all over, and that many more envious looks from other drivers. Do I really need to tell you that the extra cost is well worth it? For a few grand more ($37,345) you get leather-trimmed upholstery, 18-inch BBS alloy wheels, a power moonroof, and fog lights.

Needless to say, I’m a raving fan of this car, and have been since I first drove one. It delivered every bit of excitement I was anticipating, while still giving me enough space to carry three friends around with room to spare. Were I to have $35k for a new car, the WRX STI would be at the top of my list, and it should be on yours too.

Keep reading for a full photo gallery below.

Before You Buy

Let Once it enjoyed the company of The Targa Florio, the Carrera Panamericana, The Dundrod Tourist Trophy and the great Mille Miglia, but now the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy stands alone.

But wait, isn’t the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy a race for bikes? Indeed it is. Some would call it the craziest motorcycle race on the planet, and others would call it simply the craziest race on the planet, period. Run on closed off public roads, the TT curse makes the Nürburgring look like a kid’s go kart track. 37 miles to the lap, the “mountain course” (as it’s known to the locals) has so many lethal dangers it’s almost had to list them all.

There are sections where the road is bordered on one side by rock walls and on the other by unpadded fence posts, taken at speeds way past the ton-and-a-half. Other sections are flat out through quaint little towns with curbs, then sidewalks, then stone buildings for “run-offs”.

Fatalities are far too common, yet the folks on The Isle of Man let the race continue and actively promote it. It is a helluva tourist draw, so what’s a few flying/smashing/caroming bikers?

And, as it turns out, Subaru will be a major sponsor of the Isle of Man TT for 2011, which, even though it is an open road race for bikes, it didn’t stop rally driver Mark Higgins from having a go at the full course in his slightly modified Subaru. Higgins took on the full might of the Mountain Course and had no problem in setting a new four-wheeled lap record around 37-mile mountain loop. He made it in just 19:56.7 with an average speed of 113 miles per hour in a WRX STI sedan.

It was not a drama free run though. Higgins set the record time on what was officially termed a “practice lap”, but on other circuits, there was a bit of excitement.

At one point, he barely manages to keep his STI on the road calling the near miss the “moment of his life.” What is even more interesting is, as you can see in the video here, is that Higgins’s passenger, Chris Cantle, stays cooler than a bug on ice as they both stare down what would have been an horrific 150-mile-per-hour crash. Sure, they had prepped the STI with a roll cage, racing harnesses and a fire extinguisher, but at these speeds on this type of terrain, they would have had better survival chances by racing through a minefield.

Of course, as fun as this all is to do and to watch, it does bring up a whole slew of tantalizing possibilities and questions. For one, would the good folks on The Isle of Man consider hosting a car race? Perhaps a round of the World Rally Championship? Most likely no. The speeds reached would be monumentally fast, meaning that any “incidents” would most likely be fatal. Meaning governing bodies (such as the FIA) probably wouldn’t sanction it. Also, as you can see from the videos, the roads can be frighteningly narrow. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

More than two weeks after the massive earthquake and tsunami, the work in stabilizing Japan in the aftermath has been slow. While the tragedy is still fresh with assessments of the Asian island region has sadly reinforced dire predictions of loss, fate of the thankfully many more survivors depends on the ability to regain some sort of normality. Part of this social recovery mission entails restarting the businesses inside this vital industrial market. Slowly, the Japan automotive industry is restarting output from their manufacturing facilities in this realignment with pre-disaster life.

Much of Japanese auto production for the meantime has focused on keeping part supplied to plants outside of Japan. Honda, Nissan and Toyota have production facilities well embedded in the North American market. This diversity has shielded a good deal of those companies’ infrastructure and personnel from harm. Toyota has reported their Japanese plants were producing parts for export since the 21st of March. In facilities such as the Nissan’s truck plant in Canton, Mississippi and Honda’s East Liberty, Ohio plant have been able to operate normally (though many plants cancelled overtime shifts in fears of exhausting part stores of components imported from Japan).

Not immediately impacted, the earthquake and tsunami effects are now beginning to flow down the production chain to a point where North American assembly is beginning to express concerns. For North American vehicle production, the critical dates are April 1st for Nissan and April 4th for Honda. Honda stated even though the majority of their parts and components are supplied by North American based companies, there is still “a few critical parts” Toyota and Mazda (who currently builds the Mazda6 at the AutoAlliance International facility) have not reported any immediate concerns in North American production.

The Japanese automakers were not the only car company affected by part supply issues. Last week, the General Motors Shreveport, Louisiana and Buffalo, New York plants idled production related to the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. Citing a shortage of electronic air sensors supplied by Hitachi, production of the medium sized pick-up has since resumed.

Two weeks following the earthquake fallout, limited production of full vehicles has resumed amidst the less than ideal atmosphere. Production of the Toyota Prius and Lexus CT 200h is set to resumption Monday supplying the very popular hybrid vehicles to domestic as well as global markets. Almost all Japanese-branded hybrid and electric vehicles are built in Japan meaning the need to restart assembly was dire Nissan has also reset production of their all-electric Nissan Leaf on March 24th. Ironically, the electric Leaf’s assembly restarts as rolling power blackouts remain a concern around both the auto and battery plants.

Though operations of one Nissan plant has commenced, another manufacturing is still idled creating a possibility widespread assembly issue. Nissan’s Iwaki plant supplies VQ series 6-cylinder engines for much of the Japanese and overseas market. Used in several Nissan and Infiniti products, the Iwaki engine manufacturing facility was the site of several fires following the earthquake. Requiring repairs that are now ongoing, Nissan is considering options to extend production at the Decherd, Tennessee plant to supply their Japanese facilities for the interim.

Unlike Honda Toyota, and Nissan, Subaru as well as Suzuki depends solely on production in Japan. Subaru has been able to restart limited assembly of their mini-vehicles on March 29th but the rest of automotive production will not recommence at least until March 31st. Suzuki operations will be restricted to only part assembly in the automotive business up to March 29th but their commercial vehicle and motorcycle assembly is already back in full production.

Existing as secondary concern to the humanitarian efforts in Japan, the auto industry is nonetheless an important part to the livelihood of individuals throughout the world. However, as the recovery effort in Japan is still underway, the road ahead for the global auto market through the next few weeks has the potential of being a bumpy path to normality.

Information source: General Motors, Honda Motor Company, Nissan Motor Company, Subaru, Toyota Motor Corporation

Photo source: Chris Nagy, Honda Motor Company

Related posts:

Effects of Japan Earthquake on the Auto Industry

Slow but Steady: 2012 Honda Civic Production on Track

Update: Japanese Automakers Adjust to Earthquake Aftermath

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Update: Japanese Automakers Adjust to Earthquake Aftermath

Car News

Honda

Mazda

Misc

Mitsubishi

Subaru

Suzuki

Toyota

earthquake

japan

japanese auto industry

Nissan

The aftermath of the deadly Japanese earthquake and tsunami continues to leave the Asian country on alert. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

The aftermath of the deadly Japanese earthquake and tsunami continues to leave the Asian country on alert. Earthquake aftershocks following the violent 8.7 magnitude shake, massive rationing of everyday goods, power supply and nuclear radiation concerns as well as the fact that many unfortunate people have lost lives has provided a reason for sombre time. However, some optimism reigns for when the sadness can be dealt with moving forward. Japanese auto companies (like many other industries and offices in the region) have positioned themselves along with their employees taking stock in the recent events, helping whenever possible.

Honda, Nissan and Toyota provided immediate, official accounts to damage and injures but several waited until further evaluations of the aftermath before releasing statements. After company assessments over the weekend Mazda, Mitsubishi Motors, Subaru and Suzuki reported on the situation of their operations. Mazda, Mitsubishi Motors and Suzuki sent out word Monday that their factories and headquarters escaped damage. This was not an immediate surprise since most of these automakers’ infrastructure was in the southern part of Japan, away from the earthquake epicenter. Despite minor damage to equipment, Subaru as well as its parent Fiji Heavy Industries, survived with the seismic event without loss.

Cooperating with energy conservation efforts in Japan as well as to insure the safety of employees, all automakers have suspended production for the Monday and Tuesday. The temporary ceasing of automotive manufacturing operations is also performed following assessment of several facilities and suppliers reported damage.

While the industry is currently idled in Japan, most of the country’s automaker who did not suffer major damage intends to be restarted later this week. Subaru, Toyota and some Nissan facilities plan to resume production on March 16th while Mitsubishi Motors has production set to restart the next day. Planning initially to be restarted Wednesday the 16th, Mazda revised their production idle to the 20th of March. Mazda cited their shutdown extension as a move to assure their employee’s well being.

While some plants are set to restart production on the 16th of March, Nissan and Honda plans regarding their harder hit operations will have some of the Japanese auto company starting later. Though the corporation reported six of their manufacturing plants suffering stress from the earthquake, Nissan’s Tochigi Plant (production facility for most notably the GT-R supercar) and the Iwaki Plant (builder of Nissan VQ series engines) sustained concerning damage in the natural disaster. Following the earthquake, fires were reported at both Nissan manufacturing plants that were promptly doused before spreading. With no major injuries or serious damage, Nissan will have the Tochigi Plant and Iwaki Plant complexes back in production by the March 18th.

Honda has been the only manufacturer to announce an on-site death of an employee. A 43-year old R&D associate in Tochigi was killed when a wall collapsed in the building’s cafeteria. While reporting one death, Honda injury toll in Tochigi is revised to 17 employees (dropping from an original account of 30). Suspending production until the next week, Honda’s intends to restart production of all plants for the 20th of March.

In their most recent press release, Honda also mentions the status of North American automobile production and supply. Saying the current situation has no immediate impact on the manufacturing plant in the United States and Canada. However, Honda is actively monitoring the supply line. Well 80% of their products are produced in North America, the Honda CR-Z, Fit as well as the Acura RL and TSX are imported directly from the recently closed Japanese facilities. Honda is also convinced they have enough Japanese-made vehicle components to sustain plants in the United States and Canada. Toyota and Nissan, who have manufacturing presence in the United States, were able to follow Honda’s suit by assuring North American stock of parts is sufficient for the short-term. However, Nissan is cautioning there will be delivery delays of the GT-R and 370Z. Fortunately for the company and North American customers, a ship of 600 Nissan Leaf electric vehicles that left a day ahead of the earthquake and tsunami is proceeding safely to the United States.

There are those who believe that an industry who propel people to prosperity. In reality, the converse is actually true. The Japanese people, despite their cultural of discipline and self-motivation, have been positioned in a time of need. Among those helping the cause for aid and assistance is Japan’s home-based auto companies. Honda, Toyota, Mazda and Nissan have donated a collective amount of 660 million yen (roughly the equivalent of $8.23 million US dollars) to aid efforts. Mitsubishi Corporation itself has provided 400 million yen (almost 5 million US dollars) in immediate aid to the relief preparations. Honda North America has also pledged to match Red Cross donations of the 29,000 employees without limit. Beyond monetary assistance, Honda is also donating 1,000 portable gas generators and 5,000 gas canisters. Nissan’s non-monetary work included the donation of vehicles and fork lifts as well as food and blankets. Most notably on the 11th of March, Nissan Global Headquarters in Yokohama City served as temporary shelter to 150 people affected by the natural disaster. In the building, food and warmth were provided in a show of corporate/community spirit.

The human toll is compiled in number, but the tragic reality is many of us can never be accurately measured since there is no true measure of a value of an individual life. As charity and human kindness is extended to the Japanese public in this dark time, we like forward to a brighter future as a global community whether dealing with a large corporate or a single person. One person expressing this hope is Toyota president Akio Toyoda who issued a personal statement first expressing “I offer my prayers to all those who lost their lives in the March 11 Tohoku Earthquake and its ensuing aftermath, as well as my sympathy to the survivors and their families.” Acknowledging the relief effort as the first priority, Toyoda ended saying “Determined to provide hope for not only those suffering and forced to undergo extreme hardships, but also for the region overall, we will do our utmost toward the realization of recovery.”

Information source: American Suzuki Motor Corporation, Honda Motor Company, Mazda Motor Corporation Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan Motor Company, Subaru, Toyota Motor Corporation

Related posts:

Effects of Japan Earthquake on the Auto Industry

US Plant Production In Doubt Following Japan Auto Shutdowns

2011 Tokyo Motor Show Signifies Healing for Hurt Country

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Effects of Japan Earthquake on the Auto Industry

Car News

Honda

Nissan

Not in the States

Subaru

Toyota

auto industry

car production

earthquake

japan

Struck by effects of the country’s largest earthquake, the 8.9 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami has created a most devastating scene on Japanese soil. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

Struck by effects of the country’s largest earthquake, the 8.9 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami has created a most devastating scene on Japanese soil. A widespread catastrophe that affects humans across the globe, the natural disaster has influenced the automotive community as Japanese workers face at least a few days of certainty. Updating the world on the effect the earthquake had on Japanese auto industry, most of the major auto manufacturers within the county provided not only the status of their corporations but regrettable human cost.

The press announcement from Honda Motor Company came with a worst-case scenario acknowledged at their Tochigi R&D Center. During the earthquake, a wall in a cafeteria collapsed taking the life of a 43-year old R&D associate. Honda also reports of 30 employee injuries in the Tochigi area due to falling debris or other situations transpiring on the Friday afternoon. Honda Motor Company reports a massive shutdown of their operations through to at least Tuesday affecting Japanese production of automobiles, outboard engines and motorcycles. Honda’s Suzuka facility that builds the Fit, Civic, Insight and CR-Z is among the factories closed. Since most vehicles sold by Honda in North America are produced either in the United States or in Canada, the supply of vehicles should remain steady on the east side of the Pacific Ocean for the short-term.

In the case of Toyota Motor Corporation, two of the automaker’s facilities were located close to the epicenter of the earthquake as well as the tsunami. Two of those plants were part suppliers located within the Tohoku region and on the Hokkaido Island. The Toyota Motor Tohoku plant, employing 283 people total, provides electronic brake and other chassis-related components to Toyota vehicles. Supplying automatic and continuously variable transmission as well as aluminum wheels, Toyota Motor Hokkaido was further north than the Tohoku plant allowing it to be less at-risk to the seismic events. Toyota evacuated employees of both plants to safe areas. Toyota City, a massive manufacturing hub employing almost 28,000 employees for the auto company, is positioned well south of the devastation and therefore was left relatively unscathed. Toyota Motor Company has sent out no reports of serious injuries in relations to the earthquake.

Two vehicle manufacturing sub-constructors to Toyota also has plants positioned close to the earthquake‘s epicenter. Producing B-segment compact vehicles Kanto Auto Works’ Iwete plant and Central Motor Corporation’s manufacturing facility on the Miyagi Prefecture are shut down. Production of the Toyota Yaris as well as the Scion xB and xD models have been affected by the earthquake and tsunami.

<script type="text/javascript"

Two employees confirmed to have suffered minor injuries at the Tochigi Plant but there are no reports of more serious inflections. Loss of power also occurred in the Atsugi City location of the Nissan Technical Center building.

Subaru is also shutting down their Japanese plants in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake including an auto and aircraft plant in the Tochigi Prefecture. Mazda has also suspended manufacturing operations for the short-term. Mitsubishi Motors has not reported any effects of the earthquake and/or the tsunami on their manufacturing capabilities. Many of Mitsubishi’s operations are located in the southern part of Japan. However, both Mitsubishi and Toyota utilize proving grounds in the northern parts affected severely by the rapid flooding.

Accepting the scope of such a vast natural disaster will make normality an almost certain impossibility for many Japanese residents, the need to resume economic activities is necessary. Honda, Toyota and Nissan have all stated to be carefully analyzing when resumption of manufacturing operations can proceed. Beyond the major Japanese automotive brands, the big questions surround the numerous independent automotive part suppliers of the country. While American auto companies were known to stockpile parts through the 1970s and 1980s, modern vehicle manufacturing is better optimized to insure a smaller quantity of parts are maintained by final assembly facilities. Known through the auto industry as lean manufacturing, the successful implementation of this strategy developed through a corporate philosophy known as kaizen gave Japan auto makers a massive advantage. Of course, with part suppliers crippled, components for Japanese and possibly other world production plants could soon incur slowdowns.

While seeking to restart production, Japanese automakers have maintained awareness of the loss and pain of the Asian country. Both Toyota and Honda voiced condolences as well as prayers to those deeply affected by the massive natural disaster.

Information source: Honda Motor Company, Nissan Motor Company, Subaru, Toyota Motor Corporation

Photo source: Chris Nagy, Toyota Motor Corporation

Related posts:

US Plant Production In Doubt Following Japan Auto Shutdowns

Update: Japanese Automakers Adjust to Earthquake Aftermath

2011 Tokyo Motor Show Signifies Healing for Hurt Country

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Journey Inside the 2011 Canadian Auto Show Part 2

Audi

Canadian International Auto Show

Car News

Chrysler

Concept Cars

Ferrari

Fiat

Hyundai

Lamborghini

Mercedes-Benz

Not in the States

Saab

Subaru

Toyota

2011 auto show

2011 cars

2012 cars

auto show

auto show news

canada auto show

Canadian Auto Show

canadian international auto show

car press

Having enjoyed an experience comparing closely to Christmas in just the morning of the 2011 Canadian International Auto Show, I awaited what would be a high-energy afternoon at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC). src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

Having enjoyed an experience comparing closely to Christmas in just the morning of the 2011 Canadian International Auto Show, I awaited what would be a high-energy afternoon at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC). Taking in a lunch break, members of the media were granted the distinct pleasure of eating within sight of freshly-minted automobiles. From where I sat, I overlooked the Hyundai Equus just ahead of the large, south end windows. Looking at the CBC building across the Toronto city street, the overcast day of this unseasonably warm February day was greatly contrasted by the bright lights of Canadian and regional premieres of new automobiles.

The first press conference following lunch was for the vibrant automotive group of Hyundai. Skewing into a higher class of motor vehicles including the Genesis and now the Equus, Hyundai has also devoted efforts to revitalizing their traditional small car roots. First time shown on Canadian soil, the 2012 Hyundai Veloster three-door was unwrapped. Along with the snappy Veloster, some attention was devoted to a redesigned Hyundai Accent. With small car being more in vogue North of the border, the Canadian automotive press were reacting to the Accent and the Veloster quite enthusiastically. The electrified Blue Will concept, first shown through last year’s auto show circuit completed the showmanship at the Hyundai exhibit as attention prepared to be shifted to Volkswagen.

Volkswagen and the later Chrysler presentations involved their pricey Super Bowl advertisements from just a few weeks prior. For Volkswagen, the little Darth Vader spot initiated the Canadian unveiling for the 2012 Volkswagen Passat. Overall forecasting to sell 50,000 vehicles in just Canada alone through 2011, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group Canada John White had optimism for their entire vehicle lineup which includes two awards from AJAC (Automotive Journalist Association of Canada). The 2011 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Clean Diesel and Volkswagen Touareg both received commendations through the auto show. Mr White also informed press on a reworked Tiguan which will be brought light Geneva Motor Show and the 2012 Beetle.

Remaining on the German continent of motor vehicles, Mercedes-Benz provided a packed assortment of vehicles ranging from the Smart Fortwo to a Mercedes-Benz SLS. Unveiling two cars at the 2011 Canadian International Auto Show, the first car was an ultra-exclusive, Canada-only version of the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG called the Affalterbach Edition. Offering more universal appeal, the cover was removed from the second car, a red 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK roadster which includes a convertible hardtop featuring the Magic Sky Control glass roof.

Experiencing a sense of a renaissance spirit from the Chrysler display, heavily revised lineup shows a lot of personality. Centering their presentation around the Chrysler 200, 300 and the Dodge Charger sedans, their infusion of emotion into the American auto company is an impressive feat for Chrysler based on the reality they were evidently going to have the hardest time of the Detroit three automakers. Along the other vehicles being shown off in the Chrysler display was the Ram Power Wagon and the Dodge Challenger SRT8 392. The buzz-worthy vehicle for Chrysler Group at last year’s auto show, the Fiat 500 migrated into a separate exhibit just across the floor. A subcompact vehicle, the Fiat 500 strength came in shear numbers as a fleet lined a pathway inside of the convention center.

Showing off their future runner for an expanded Prius product line, Toyota gave Canadian a first look new at the 2012 Prius v hybrid. One the another side of the exhibit as well as on a vastly different vehicle category, an example of 500 Lexus LFA supercars provided some eye candy to what is often a rather dull product display from Toyota. In a relieve for 2011, the cars remained the largest focus of this auto show gather. Last year, much of talk from Toyota centered on calming worries of their products’ sudden and unpredictable acceleration problem.

Past three o’clock in the afternoon, the 2011 Canadian International Auto Show media day has entered the seven-hour mark with 13 auto manufacturers providing status updates. Of course, I’m not complaining during this day of automotive nirvana but I did need to load a third camera battery prior to final model introductions which included an anticipated conference with Audi on deck.

Unveiling the 2012 Audi A6 sedan to the Canadian public, flash bulbs illuminated the display once a new high-end edition of the TT sports car. Less than a week after its North American premiere at the Chicago Auto Show, the 340 horsepower Audi TT RS dazzled in a sharp red paint vividly against the white and silver. Also at the show but making a quiet first appearance inside the MTCC is the Audi A7. Introduced just six months ago, the A7′s rather humdrum reception is perhaps the result of rapidly-changing fashion of the premium luxury car category. However, I still find the Audi A7 a trendy number which makes much more sensible choice in a Canadian weather climate.

Having visited almost every automobile company’s exhibit, the Subaru exhibit presented the final concept car of the 2011 Canadian International Auto Show media day. With opening gull-wing doors, the Subaru Hybrid Tourer Concept features many innovations including EyeSight system as well as a 2-liter, turbocharged boxer engine connected in unison with an electric motor to all-wheel drive.

With Media Day drawing closer to the end, the last auto manufacturer to hold a press conference was Saab Automobiles. Occupying a small space on the lower convention center with only three vehicles, the Swedish automobile’s display is certainly not contending with the floor exhibits. For Saab, the simple presence of the car company at the Canadian International Auto Show demonstrated a hard effort exerted by the openly independent brand. Providing a narrated view into a bright window for Saab’s future, executive director of North American sales John Anderson gave encouragement to the Swedish auto maker’s cause of producing individualized premium vehicles.

As the Saab press conference concluded in a crowded hallway with over 100 members of the media, more room was afforded to press when the Canadian International Auto Show opened up a major display called Concorso Exotica. Showcasing the some of the finest exotic cars the world has to offer, past and present was well-represented. Modern Porsches, Lotus and Aston Martin models shared space with classic museum-quality pieces within Concorso Exotica which included a rare spectacle of seeing a total of five Lamborghinis in one place outside of a dealership. Lamborghini’s arch rival Ferrari had firm representation at Concorso Exotica. Providing a small snapshot of the Italian sports car builder’s history starting with a 1960 Ferrari 250 GT Series II Cabriolet. The progression of Ferrari’s high-performance lifestyle would continue to be told at Concorso Exotica through a Ferrari F40 and modern cars such as the 599 GTB Fiorano and the brand-new 458 Italia.

An adjacent room to Concorso Exotica contained the Auto Show’s annual Cruise Nationals exhibit of antique vehicles. Presenting 10 finalist from what was once 1,400 vehicles shown throughout Cruise Nationals regional events in Canada, this year’s ultimate winner was a yellow 1969 Chevy Nova SS.

After 9 hours of enjoying a worthwhile time between the greatest vehicles of 2011 and 2012, the media day of the 2011 Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto concluded with the knowledge that enthusiasm is back in the auto industry. Enduring factors including a world financial crisis, changing social attitudes and even the inclement weather of Canada, the automobile continues to adapt to the people who rely on this transportation.

<a The Subaru Impreza Concept unearths a dynamic out-of-the-box view from the all-wheel drive specialist.

Motivated by the brand’s emerging brand identity as “Confidence in Motion”, Subaru asserts that this Impreza concept adapts a striking collection of shapes and textures which is yet evident in their production cars. ”Through “Confidence in Motion”, we will continue to establish the relationship of confidence with more customers and further strengthen our Subaru brand.” Ikuo Mori, President of Subaru’s parent company Fiji Heavy Industries Ltd. said at the Los Angeles Auto Show’s press conference.

A sign of a new dimension of Subaru design, the Impreza Concept’s exterior is quite a defining sculpture constructed with remarkable simplicity. Little less than an inch longer in wheelbase, the Impreza Concept is considerably lower than the existing Subaru Impreza. This concept sedan by Subaru is even 1.8 inches shorter in overall height than a 2011 Impreza WRX. Performance-oriented front and rear styling charges emotion into the vehicle’s potential handling prowess while the silky smooth side is intentionally purposeful. “Hawk-eye-style” headlamps glow within the hexagonal front end form. Wheel arches are placed to emphasize the Subaru all-wheel drive system which launches the Impreza Concept. Though largely original, Subaru has apparently borrowed a chapter from the 1990s Chrysler “cab-forward” design. On the Impreza Concept, Subaru has stretched the concept car’s roof front A-pillar and rear C-pillar to not only cast a more sporty, aerodynamic look but to improve interior space.

In regards to the Subaru Impreza concept’s cabin, seating is provided comfortably for four occupants on premium leather. Stylishly surrounded by blue piping and stitching, the Impreza Concept interior flow is focused upwards at a very luminescent dash panel. A multi-function center touchscreen controlling audio, navigation as well as vehicle information. The steering wheel integrates touch screen interfaces for what Subaru recognizes as stress-free use. Subaru’s advanced safety system aid called Eyesight uses sensors to alert driver of a collision or potential slow down the vehicle itself. Video through Eyesight Stereo Camera is provided via an in-dash monitor.

Spotlighting a radical, new design, the Subaru Impreza Concept conceals a differing drivetrain from the current production Impreza. A normally aspirated, Boxer-style engine is found under the elegant hood. Fascinating enough only 2 liters in displacement, this flat-four powerplant is 0.5 liters smaller than the United States market’s base engine. Horsepower and other engine vitals were not revealed at the premiere of the potential Subaru. Mated with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), this Subaru Impreza Concept appears to be making a dedicated effort to supply peak fuel mileage. Despite the compact four-door concept car’s innovations, certain traditions continue to be upheld on the Subaru Impreza Concept sedan. Symmetrical all-wheel drive moves the 19 inch Subaru Impreza Concept’s aluminum rims.

Promoting a potentially new brand identity for future Subaru vehicles, we should not be surprised if the next production-based Subaru Impreza will strictly adhere to the framework of this concept vehicle.

Information and photo source: Subaru Global

Related posts:

Subaru Impreza WRX STI 380S Concept

Kia Ray Hybrid Concept at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show

2010 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Review

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Cossie WRX STI makes its presence known

Car News

Cosworth

Not in the States

Subaru

Cossie

Impreza

STi

WRX

Attach the name “Cosworth” to just about anything and it instantly becomes awesome. Ford Escort Cosworth? Yes please! Mercedes 190E? I guess. Mercedes 190E 16V Cosworth? Hot damn! So, when you take a few words that already elicit an overwhelmingly positive response, like “Impreza WRX STI” and throw “Cosworth” into the mix things start to get out of hand. The soles of your shoes have worn down where they meet the pedals, you haven’t showered in three days, your boss calls and wonders if you still work for him – it could be nasty.

Have no fear, North American car enthusiasts, none of the 75 new Subaru Impreza WRX STI Cosworth CS400s built are headed stateside! All CS400s are to be right-hand drive and are only headed for the grey, moody shores of the United Kingdom. We don’t have to worry about upsetting our backs with repeat sub 3.7 second 0-to-60 jaunts. We don’t have to worry about forgetting our girlfriend’s at DSW. Leave that business to the Red Coats. We’re going to be safe from this beast of a car, just like all those other big foreign meanies that came before it!

Cosworth took the standard STI and give it a bit of a tweak, it’s what they do when they aren’t building F1 motors. The CS400 features stronger pistons and connecting rods, modified head gaskets, a higher pressure oil pump, a different exhaust system, Cossie bearings, a new wastegate actuator and compressor on the turbo, and a reworked ECU map. This all adds up to 395 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque. The U.S market STI puts out 305 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque, comparatively.

Suspension modifications aren’t entirely clear at this point beyond the car riding 10mm lower. Autocar reports that Cosworth sourced suspension bits from both Bilstein and Eibach and that the upgraded brakes on the CS400 come care of AP Racing.

As stated above, only 75 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Cosworth CS400s will be built and all of them are headed to the U.K. The CS400 is available in dark gray (matte black), red, or silver. The car’s price is a bit staggering at 49,995 British Pounds, which exchanges to roughly $72,000 U.S.

Related posts:

Lotus & Cosworth Together Again

Vath Tuning Makes a 580 HP Wagon I Can Believe In

Spyker Makes Their Last…Car Payment to GM

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Will Your Car Get You Laid?

Ford

Funny

List

Mazda

Subaru

buying a car

curb appeal

ford f-150

mazdaspeed3

miranda lightstone

new car

pick-up truck

rally

sex appeal

subaru impreza sti

will your car get you laid

Many a teenage boy has asked just this question — and you might not think it’s relevant or even worth talking about. But it plays such an important role in car-buying situations that it must be discussed.

There’s no denying it; the curb appeal of a car is part of the buying process. And if it isn’t, then you clearly know nothing about cars and care very little about what the world thinks of you as a human being. Would you wake up and put a potato sack on to go to work? I didn’t think so.

So, how does one measure a car’s sex appeal? Well there are a few factors to consider:

- Pure exterior sex appeal

- Exhaust note

- Interior space/cleanliness

Think of your car as an extension of yourself. If you’re looking to purchase a brand new car, consider the fact that your ride truly is an extension of yourself and your personality. If, let’s say, you’re pulling up to your date’s house for the first time to pick her up; you may have already aced that first impression and landed the date, but now she gets to judge you all over again. And your broken down and rusting Yugo just won’t inspire lustful thoughts — trust me.

If you’re in the market for a brand new ride, let me instead suggest these models that are sure to get your motor running (and her’s too):

Subaru Impreza STI

As long as you’re not cruising around in a Subaru Outback (we all know what that means), then driving a Subie is just plain cool. And if you want to be even cooler and attractive, then make sure you cough up the cash for the STI. The brand new hatch version is just damn sexy. Rally-inspired and capable of handling anything the road throws its way, the Impreza STI doesn’t just convey thoughts of stability and control, but it also has undertones of wild behavior and mystery. And make sure to remove that blow-off valve silencer so you get a nice harmonious gasp from her and your Subie for every gear change.

Mazdaspeed3

Don’t be fooled by the insane-asylum grin on this auto. It might look giddy and silly, but it’s serious stuff behind the wheel. Driving the Mazdaspeed3 will get you looks no matter what you look like. The car attracts enough attention on its own, that you’d never have to get out of the car — just pop open the passenger-side door like a Venus fly trap and wait. Honestly. Everyone loves Mazda right now (as they should) and the 3 is so widely popular that not only will you be heralded for making the “smart” vehicle choice, but you’ll also be cool for choosing the top-end tuner model. And even though I use the word “tuner” grudgingly, that’s what it is. But it’s tasteful tuner, and that’s the difference. With a hot hatch design that’s perfect the way it is and an exhaust note that growl-y enough to garner attention from the right passersby, the Mazdaspeed3 is definitely a car that’ll get you laid.

Ford F-150

This might be a shock to some of you, but hear me out. A few years ago the most attention the Ford F-150 would have gotten you would be a few nods from the construction workers down the street. But Ford has done something interesting with the pick-up; they’ve manged to bring it out of the age of flannel shirts and hard hats and put it right up there in the suits and business-owner realm. Pick-ups are no longer hillbilly. Ford’s F-150 is so highly customizable that it’s possible to order an F-150 that, practicality-wise, would never survive as a workman’s ride. Take the King Ranch for example; would you really want your muddy work boots on the cream-colored carpeting? Or your oily tools on the deep brown, creamy leather seats in the back? I don’t think so. But would you want to have to help your date in her mini skirt up onto those buttery leather seats? Why yes, I think you would.

So, finding the right car is about more than fuel mileage, trunk space and gadgets. Finding the right ride could be your ticket to coupledom. Remember that.

What other reasonably priced car do you think will get you laid?

Related posts:

Dead: Sport Compact Car, 115 employees Laid Off

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

2010 Subaru Impreza WRX STI Review

Car Reviews

Subaru

featured

Impreza

STi

WRX

When friends and family ask me about what cars we have in to review each week, the response is always the same “that’s cool, how is it?” This week it was different. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

When friends and family ask me about what cars we have in to review each week, the response is always the same “that’s cool, how is it?” This week it was different. This week Subaru dropped off the 2010 Impreza WRX STI. When friends and family found out, the response was unanimous: “Please let me drive it!” And it’s no wonder. Ever since Subaru brought the WRX STI to the States in 2004, it’s been a legendary car for enthusiasts.

For 2008, Subi released their second generation Impreza, dropping the STI from the regular sedan lineup and giving it the sleek hatchback style only. The new generation isn’t quite as extreme, and is aimed at a wider audience. But don’t think it lost its flair – it’s still one helluva car.

After giving a couple friends a ride in the 2010 Subaru WRX STI their response after a full-throttle start was again unanimous: “Holy Shit!” Nobody expected that kind of scoot from this little hatchback; especially being a four-banger, turbocharged or not. What kind of scoot? The 305 horsepower turbo’d 2.5-liter boxer engine rockets from zero to 60 mph in only 4.5 seconds. That’s quicker than a Camaro SS, Audi TTS, and Porsche Cayman S! But the surprising part about the STi is its high-end pull; keep the pedal down and the car will continue to pull through sixth gear. Turbo lag is barely noticeable. Clutch travel in the STI is noteworthy; it’s heavy for some but has a linear and consistent travel that I think all clutches should have.

What consistently impressed us, though, is its ability to switch between a hard-edged rally car and comfortable daily driver. Superb black leather and alcantara seats, leather steering wheel, and plenty of headroom and rear seat space keep driver and passengers comfortable, and fold-down rear seats give more than enough cargo room for most. Subaru’s SI-DRIVE – standard in all STI’s – allows you to change between Intelligent, Sport, and Sport # (sharp) modes. Intelligent is for your regular cruising, reducing power and throttle response for a more manageable drive. Sport quickens things up a bit, and Sport # mode is where we kept it. Power is increased, throttle response is quicker, and the car gets noticeably more fun to drive.

Taking the WRX STI around a windy road at high speed is driving heaven. The car is so planted and so confident on the road with its all-wheel-drive, that taking a turn way too fast doesn’t result in breaking any traction at all. It’s a joy to drive fast… really fast.

Stepping up from a regular Impreza to the high-performance STI bags you (along with more power and the above-mentioned SI-DRIVE) a wonderful short-throw 6-speed manual gearbox, 18-inch alloy wheels, larger and very grippy Brembo brakes, a sport-tuned suspension, front and rear limited-slip differentials, bigger hood scoop, HID headlights, and sport seats clad with red stitching, leather, and alcantara. Also included is a sport exhaust, a more aggressive body kit, and rear spoiler. The STI’s Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD) All-Wheel Drive system allows you to adjust the differential settings for different front/rear bias. Racers will love this feature, particularly on a dirt track.

If I had only one complaint about the car, it would be that the short-throw gearbox makes it too easy to miss quick shifts. During…ahem…aggressive driving, I missed the 2-3 shift more than a couple times. I imagine it just takes getting used to, since few of the manual transmissions I drive have gates nearly this close together. Trying to think of anything else to complain about is difficult. Price is a bit high, but not unreasonable, and I never did figure out how to properly work the DCCD system.

Subaru…please give me this car for another week.

The Numbers

The 2010 Subaru Impreza WRX STI starts at $34,995. Certainly not cheap, but I wouldn’t say it’s overpriced given what’s included. Fuel economy comes in at a reasonable 17/23 mpg with premium fuel required. We averaged 22.1 mpg, which is impressive, given the way it was driven. A $2000 BBS package is available adding either silver or gold 18-inch BBS wheels – attractive for those who want the classic STi blue/gold theme. Add navigation and bluetooth for an extra $1800.

Is it worth the price? There’s no doubt in my mind that if you’ll use what it offers, it’s worth every penny.

Before You Buy

The Subaru Impreza WRX STI’s only true competitor is the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X, which matches up quite nicely with the STI. If it were me, I’d take the Subaru. Step down a notch to the regular Impreza WRX and now you have the MazdaSpeed 3, VW GTI, Chevy Cobalt SS, and Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart biting at its heels.

Let dealers compete for your business and have the upper hand in negotiations before going into the dealership. Find the Lowest Price on Your New Car src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

Normally, station wagons don’t do much for me. But station wagons that are tricked out by STI (Subaru’s skunk works/racing arm/rally parts bin) and trimmed out in WRC blue … OK, I might be interested, sure. Anyway, the wagon you see here just rolled out at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show. It might get missed amongst all the general weirdness that is rampant at the show, or overshadowed by stuff like the Lexus LFA … but then again, a high performance wagon might go unnoticed by certain types of other people too.

“Why, no officer. It couldn’t have been ME that was speeding, it must have been those hoodlums over there with that racy looking car with the huge wing on it!”

First off, the Exiga won’t be coming to America. Which is unfortunate, because it seems to offer a bunch of nice practical stuff. It can seat up to seven passengers in three rows of seats and is powered by the ubiquitous 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine that Subaru must have sitting in warehouses by the millions. Seriously, I bet Subie has 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine powering their pencil sharpeners. Anyway, said mill cranks out a not-so-bad 221HP and is hooked up to a five-speed automatic transmission.

The STI guys had a go at the exterior, dressing it up with new aero accessories such as a front lip spoiler and side skirts and also slapping some pretty nice 17-inch alloy wheels and some sporty exhaust tips out the back.

On the inside there’s STI sport seats in a combination of leather and alcantara with contrasting red stitching, nice, and carbon fiber trim all over the place. Naturally there’s an STI-badged steering wheel and gear knob, aluminum pedals and STI gauges on the instrument panel.

The Exiga benefits from the usual upgrades to the suspension, brake and steering systems, as smeared on by STI

Subaru is only going to make a ” strictly limited run of 300 units” for the Japanese market-only Exiga 2.0GT STI, which is a shame. It should just me an option, if you ask me. And if you ask me, Subaru should bring the Exiga stateside. The downside might be the pricing. Subaru wants 3,591,000 Yen for the car, which comes out to around $39,700 US. Which is too much. Now a lot of that might have to do with Japanese taxes levied on cars of a certain size or displacement, so who knows? If they were to bring it over, it could drop down to something more reasonable … like less than $30K

Source: CarScoop

Related posts:

Subaru SVX Set To Return?

WRC: Subaru Cancels World Rally Program

Next-Generation Subaru WRX To Get Turbocharged Engine From BRZ

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts
