This past decade, in-car infotainment electronics has evolved from a multi-disc CD charger and the occasional rear-seat DVD viewing system to a level of innovation once thought of as absurd. Satellite radio, electronic GPS guidance and even wireless Internet connections on several luxury products provide a mere tip of the iceberg to what is currently available to vehicle occupants.

An exhibition that coincided with the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas provided a spotlight on all things high technology. Countless tablet computers, WiFi digital cameras and smartphones were the common spectacle of future electronics. Tempering with the usual balance of the CES in Las Vegas, representatives for the 20th century’s most pivotal invention (the automobile), brought some cutting-edge solutions for the 21st century’s demanding mobile technology world. In fact, Ford Motor Company took an innovation award away from the 2012 CES for their latest MyFord Mobile App.

On several occasions during the 2012 technology show in Las Vegas, a term began to swirl over automotive company products at a higher frequency than ever. The use of the term “The Cloud” was inserted into the presentation of several devices for the future of automotive infotainment. Instead of storing electronic programs and files on a physical hard drive or disk, information is stored through a virtual space called the “cloud”. As in-car electronic systems (most notably navigation services) progressed from the use of DVDs to hard drives that well surpasses many tablet PCs, the venture to the cloud for auto equipment manufacturers means limitless possibilities. The introduction of cloud computing principles have grown most prevalently with the popular navigation program called Google Maps employed on systems including the Ford SYNC and Audi MMI. Unlike previous GPS systems that either stored limited information or require time-consuming updates through a home computer, Google Maps uses a cloud interface to calculate routes. At the recent 2012 CES exhibition, auto companies are certainly becoming wiser to high-flying cloud computing ideals.

Making use of the open world of the cloud, Mercedes-Benz unveiled an upgraded version of their mbrace telematics suite of security and comfort connectivity features set for introduction starting the new SL roadster in the 2013 model year. An enhanced service, mbrace2 expands its reach in providing Mercedes-Benz occupants with a richer, even more connected electronic experience. Facebook, Yelp and Google Local Search are some Apps users of mbrace2 can expect immediately. Based on a cloud-based system, the mbrace2 system can be easily and conveniently updated allowing for delivery of an even greater selection of Apps in the future. The one necessity of cloud computing is a constant wireless connection. For the Mercedes-Benz mbrace2 system, Verizon will provide the subscribed service as it rolls out early this year.

With much of the auto sector devoted to the development of exclusive in-car infotainment solutions (i.e. MyFord Touch, Cadillac CUE, and Kia UVO), the outside stereo and car entertainment suppliers appear to have lost leverage on the marketplace. Other than the units created in-house or through partnerships, Aha by HARMAN have been making some serious inroads on the automotive infotainment market utilizing a cloud-platform. Launched as an iPhone App in 2009 as Aha Mobile, the web-based platform delivers an array of interactive products. Internet radio, navigation-related information, as well as audio dictation of Facebook and Twitter messaging is obtained through the Aha Mobile App that will also soon be joining the Android device marketplace. While Pioneer introduced the first automotive stereo system to incorporate Aha by HARMAN technology, the growth of the brand depends on forging relationships with the automakers.

During the 2012 CES, Subaru and Honda will be the first OEM deployment of Aha by HARMAN technology in the North American market. Demonstrated on a 2013 Subaru BRZ sports car at the 2012 CES exhibition in Las Vegas, the vehicle presented the new web-based entertainment options available through Aha by HARMAN. In the case of Subaru, customers can expect Aha by HARMAN to become part of what will be a “fourth band” of car radio joining AM, FM and satellite radio options on future vehicles.

Cloud computing principles will most definitely affect the evolution of an already growing market for in-car infotainment electronics. Late in 2011, Ford announced a brand-new MyFord Touch infotainment suite for their upcoming 2013 model year vehicles. As they outfit future products with the new in-car system, previous owners of Ford products featuring the first-generation MyFord Touch are being provided with an upgrade through a USB stick. While not a terribly labour intensive task, cloud computing solutions in automobiles would allow updates and improvements to be conducted near seamlessly.

For automotive consumers, cloud computing could unveil a reality where a car or truck could feature the same technological flexibility as an Apple iPad. Numerous Apps, limitless music and media storage, the most current road maps possible as well as effortless data sharing are advantages cloud-based vehicles can provide. Along with the expansive abilities of cloud-based in-car technology, new features such as voice recognition can be modified through software upgrades allowing motorists to immediately experience the advancements of technology (no longer a prize reserved for the purchaser of the newest vehicle). Among the only possible downside could be privacy and security of cloud-based systems. While all automotive uses of cloud computing engages methods to properly protect information, the future is as wide open as the cloud network for debate on this very accessible data.

The cloud computing integration with automobiles could also mean a buyer trading in their vehicle can take more than the custom floor mats and the air freshener with them to the next automotive upgrade. Contingent on the fact a buyer stays with a single auto manufacturer (at least for the time being), it will be highly likely all unique Apps and set-up information can be seamlessly passed to the next vehicle.

People will often pay through their nose to be the first to have something. In the technology industry it is called being an early-adopter – and you definitely pay to be one. With cars, Concours d’Elegance shows and auctions like Barrett Jackson in Arizona usually offer a chance to be first.

Sometimes a catalog like Neiman Marcus will score an exclusive as well. Most of the time the proceeds of a much-anticipated model are donated to a charity. According to Motor Authority sixth annual Boca Raton Concours d’Elegance in Florida is aiming to secure the very first Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG. A charity doesn’t appear to be involved but we’ll have to check on that to be sure.

The standard sixth-generation SL just made its debut, and the high-performance AMG model is still under wraps. So apparently you’re bidding at the show for a car that hasn’t been released yet. That’s pretty weird, but when the car debuts you will be guaranteed to have the first one. While not well-known by most, the Boca Raton show has a history of first sells. They include the first Ferrari California, FF and 458 Italia, along with the first R8 GT, R8 5.2 FSI and R8 Spyder. Mercedes-Benz isn’t a stranger to the show either, with the first North American SLS AMG sold there.

On the docket this year is a Lamborghini Aventador, as well as the just-released R8 GT Spyder, which is limited to just 50 units in the United States. Most likely information will be provided to the buyer at the show via Mercedes, unless they decide to release the AMG first. The car is rumored to have 571 horsepower, powered by a 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-8. The Boca Raton event takes place beginning February 25th. The price for being first will likely run at least $200,000. The previous generation SL63 AMG came in at around $140,000.

BMW was the largest premium manufacturer in the world last year, with Audi at number two and Mercedes-Benz taking third place. Audi’s goal is to be the largest company in the world 2018, and while it is well on its way to that, the competition isn’t going to just stand still. Mercedes aims to take the top spot as well. A huge part of its plan to do that is the new entry-level Mercedes Front Architecture (MFA). As its name implies, the platform is front-wheel drive.

A FWD Mercedes line…..yeah, we’ve scratched our heads at that too. It is all in the name of volume, and BMW is going to head down that road too with the 1-Series. The B-Class MPV was the first model to be based on this platform.

The next is the A-Class, which was previewed by a concept at last year’s New York International Auto Show. That concept previewed a much more stylish A-Class – one that ditches the unique sandwich platform the car has always been known for. An intrepid bicyclist captured footage of production model A-Class completely uncovered.

The a-Class was captured on the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. It is likely that it was there for a photo shoot. The production A-Class comes out looking very similar to the concept, with a rakish design for a hatchback. Mercedes design language is followed to a tee, with very defined, bold design cues and a huge pointed star adorning the grille.

It makes a design statement, and that is what Mercedes is going for now after years of stodgy designs. The A-Class will debut at the Geneva Motor show next month. This time around, the A-Class will probably be sold in the United States – maybe even the B-Class. Already confirmed is a new coupe-like four sedan that has been spotted testing. The primarily competitors in the luxury segment are all on a sales rampage. Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz have posted record sales in 2011. BMW took the top spot in the United States and globally. Growth at Mercedes-Benz has trailed both Audi and BMW though.

Sales and profits are still on the increase, just not as rapidly. The business is thriving, but Mercedes isn’t content to leave it at that – they want to be on top in the global sales race. Audi wants to achieve this goal too. At this juncture, Audi looks like they have a better chance of succeeding in that pursuit.

Chief Executive Officer Dieter Zetsche recently wrote a letter to employees about this, saying: “We can’t be content to be in a solid second or even third place. We are Daimler – we should be far ahead of the pack…..if it requires something we don’t have, we’ll identify and develop it…some of our competitors are now growing faster and more profitably than we are. Granted, those are just snapshots in time and should not be overestimated. After all, many of our best new products are yet to come.”

Some of those products he is referring to are apparently the new small front-wheel drive platform that will include the A- and B-Class as well as a new four-door sedan. German magazine Manager Magzin states that Zetsche plans to increase Mercedes sales to 2.7 million units by 2020, with profit margins reaching 10 percent. These are all ambitious goals to be sure. What’s more is 2.7 million sales doesn’t sound all that “premium” to us!

Increasing sales by these margins is going to require added production. The approach to doing that is two-pronged. Daimler is spending over $2 billion on an upgrade of its Tuscaloosa, Alabama plant. There Mercedes produces the M-Class, but it is expanding to include the C-Class and next-generation R and GL-Class SUVs.

The big news though is yet another factory, located in the United States or Mexico. The plant would produce the next-generation of the A-Class and front-wheel drive cars, coming online in 2017 or 2018.

Weighing in at 3825 pounds in current base guise, the 2012 Mercedes-Benz E-Class has never been considered a “super light.” More like heavy German engineering. The E-Class is a cash cow for Mercedes, being the second best-seller for the company here in the United States, behind the entry-level C-Class. CAR Magazine says Mercedes is looking to break new territory with the E-Class range, developing a new E-Class Superlight that will serve as a halo for the sedan range.

CAR says the size of the E Superlight is similar to the CLS, with a price tag in S-Class territory thanks to all the carbon fiber onboard. Instead of using a combination of carbon fiber, high-strength steel and aluminum the E Superlight will go all-in with carbon fiber. The idea is to be a demonstration of Mercedes technological capabilities, offering a luxury sedan that weighs just 2860 pounds. If they achieve that goal, it will be a huge development.

The strength of carbon fiber as a material gives new freedom to designers. The E Superlight is said to feature rear suicide doors that are unimpeded by a B-pillar. It would be a striking design feature, while also having positive implications for ingress and egress. As far as styling, the E-Class Superlight will be a four-door notchback, with styling elements taken from previous concepts like the F800 and F125.

Where it seems a bit unlikely is the fact that CAR reports the car would be powered by a hydrogen fuel-cell. The power train would be integrated with the car’s monocoque, featuring an 150 horsepower fuel-cell and 50 hp electric motor. What seems much more likely is a conventional gas engine or range-extended electric combination launching first. Who knows though, maybe Mercedes really does want to make an “out there” statement of technological superiority. We’re particularly looking forward to the design statement this car will make. The E Superlight won’t start production until 2015. The next step is getting an official confirmation from Mercedes.

The Mercedes-Benz SL has a long and storied history, dating all the way back to 1954. As such, when a new one rolls around it is a pretty big event. The previous generation SL, while updated in 2008, was introduced in 2003.

That gives it a product lifespan that is longer than most in the industry. With all the development money poured into it, it makes sense. The SL is one of those cars that soldiers on for a while and still remains fresh. For 2013, Mercedes is billing the car as all-new. As far as Mercedes design, Who would have known the SLS AMG would have been so influential? Over the past few years, Mercedes has steadily abandoned its sedate, roundish design theme for a much bolder and defined look.

There are harder, almost more retro edges in every new product. The new SL debuts large front headlights, with a very wide, upright grille spanning the front end. There is a single bar running across the grille, and a gigantic pointed star takes center stage. While it is influenced by the SLS, the SL actually stands out versus the rest of the Mercedes lineup. It is very defined as a unique product. We’ll see if it remains that way. If the sL looks bigger to you than before, that’s because it is, and not by insignificant amounts either. Length has been increased by 1.97 inches and width by 2.27 inches. The new car seems to offer a much more imposing presence than before.

The rear end still bears a strong resemblance to the previous car. It looks a lot wider not only due to actual width, but also a more horizontal design. Interestingly, the consistency of the taillights look almost Bangle-era BMW. Inside, the new SL adopts a similar look to the SLS AMG, with a cockpit-like feel that uses chrome gauges. The two-tone leather is particularly stunning in this car. It feels a lot more special and high-end than the previous SL. Watch for this interior style to spread across the Mercedes lineup as its gets redesigned.

While most cars gain weight with age (like the SL has over its lifetime), the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL actually drops it. It is thanks to a construction made nearly entirely from aluminum. It has an all-aluminum body shell, the first Mercedes to do so. The overall weight reduction can be up to 308 pounds depending on model – Mercedes says it is the equivalent of a large passenger stepping out of the car.

For the SLS550 the weight reduction is at the 275 pound mark. Something to remember is that if the new SL didn’t use aluminum, it would weigh more than its predecessor as it is larger and has more technology on board. Mercedes says owners will experience much improved structural rigidity and handling.

The SL continues with a downsizing effort in Mercedes V-8 engines. The car’s 4.6-liter V-8 is 0.8 liters smaller than its predecessor, but produces 429 horsepower and 516 pound feet of torque. Power is up by 12 percent, while torque is up by an astonishing 32 percent – the previous car generated 391 lb-ft. The 4.6 is much more efficient as well, achieving its power through twin-turbocharging and direct injection.

A 7-Speed automatic transmission does the shifting, and the SL features an ECO stop/start system as standard equipment. 0-60 arrives in 4.5 seconds, eight tenths faster than the previous car. The 2013 SL550 looks like a worthy update in a line of of iconic vehicles. We can’t wait to check it out in person; the SL550 is headed to Mercedes dealers in spring of next year.

Last month, Daimler announced it was killing off Maybach. The company was said to be debating its options for months; one of them included a partnership with Aston Martin. When that didn’t work, Daimler executives concluded that Mercedes-Benz brand had a much better opportunity at selling cars in the ultra-luxury segment. After all, that’s what happened in the past – the company never needed another brand.

Unless Daimler was prepared to invest heavily in Maybach, we agree with that assumption. Why not tap into the history and grandeur of the Mercedes name? Looking back, the whole effort could have been managed better – the Maybach name could have been a high-end trim level or stretched version of the S-Class. In the beginning, the company explored that option with the 1997 Mercedes-Benz Maybach concept.

Hindsight is 20/20 though, and Mercedes is adopting that strategy as the way forward for its high-end market offerings. Instead of Maybach as a trim level though, the company is planning on bringing back another moniker form the past – Pullman.

Pullman is part of a plan to take the S-Class upmarket that includes six models. To separate it from the rest of the lineup, Autobild says the car will get unique styling. The Pullman of the past had very formal and upright styling. Look for the new S600 Pullman to echo those commanding lines, with a front-end design that has vertical headlights. It’ll be interesting to see how retro Mercedes goes with it; there is a lot of possibilities to be had tapping into the car’s rich heritage. Vertical lighting has been toyed with in Mercedes concepts to great effect. The direction Mercedes styling is going right now fits in perfectly with bringing back the Pullman as well.

Inside, Autobild says the S600 Pullman will get a special interior that has rear seats facing the opposite direction – just like the original. Power will come from a 650-horsepower V-12 engine. We’re actually really excited to see what comes of the S600 Pullman. It has been a long time since Mercedes truly put effort into a high-end vehicle like this. Maybach never seemed wholehearted, unlike efforts from the competition. Hopefully Autobild has accurate information with regards to styling.

Before the emergence of the Tesla Roadster, electric cars were in danger of becoming a victim of an undeserved stigma. As most electric vehicle is built to feature a minimized carbon footprint, the common belief was to think of battery-powered cars as lacklustre performers. In truth, the characteristics of electric powertrains lends surprisingly well to preppy performance attributes for a vehicle.

Planning to change minds on the way all-electric vehicles will be viewed is German automotive performance company Brabus. Having already worked magic on the Tesla Roadster in late 2008 and showing off an electric powered Smart Fortwo in 2009, the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show served as the premiere for Brabus’ latest zero emissions concept car.

Honed from a Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan, the Brabus High Performance 4WD Full Electric invokes the initial reaction of allure as the fuel-powered examples from this German car customizer. Brabus body enhancements, including aluminum front fenders with carbon fiber inserts, not only allows the prototype sedan to command performance authority but also assists in aerodynamic efficiency. Brabus has also outfitted LED daytime running lights to the vehicle achieving minimal energy consumption. When looking at the rear of the Brabus High Performance 4WD Full Electric, a notable item is the exclusion of the exhaust pipe.

A suspension system for the Brabus High Performance 4WD Full Electric was created in cooperation with Bilstein featuring gas-pressure shocks and adjustable height settings. Perhaps some of the most dramatic wheels ever to be found on an electric wheel, 19-inch Brabus Monoblock Q wheels spins on this unique technology showcase.

Rather than Mercedes-Benz 4Matic drivetrain, the Brabus has turned to Protean Electric to showcase in-wheel electric drive on the converted E Class sedan. Providing acceleration and braking assist, the total 320 kilowatts of electric current is fed by a 56 kWh lithium-ion battery. An electric motor connected to each wheel, all-wheel drive on the Brabus car is supplied with assistance of individual computer controls. Weighing 68 pound each and perfectly located behind the sporty Brabus wheels, the in-wheel system displayed on the Brabus High Performance 4WD Full Electric is the latest application of an automotive design theory popularized on General Motor’s Autonomy concept car in 2001. Along with the deceleration handled by the wheel hub mounted electric motors, a Brabus high performance braking system stops the sedan promptly.

To be driven in one of two modes (Eco and Sport), the Brabus High Performance 4WD Full Electric most aggressive manoeuvring is approached in the Sport setting. The initial acceleration of the Brabus High Performance 4WD Full Electric from 0 to 62 miles per hour in 6.9 seconds is not bad for an all-electric vehicle but a little longish for a luxury performance sedan. In fact, the current Mercedes-Benz E350 sedan 0 to 60 mile per hour launch is 6.5 seconds. Though the effort from the standing start may not immediately excite, Brabus High Performance 4WD Full Electric peak power at only 1,000 RPMs kicks in for impressive performance at speed. From 37 to 74 miles per hour, the Brabus High Performance 4WD Full Electric accelerates in 5 seconds flat (faster than a Mercedes-Benz E500 4Matic). The Brabus High Performance 4WD Full Electric top speed is 137 miles per hour.

In Eco mode, the Brabus High Performance 4WD Full Electric sedan maintains a tamer 118 mile per hour top speed but provides greater traveling distance. Under the best driving scenario, the Brabus electric sedan can run 217 miles on a single charge. To recharge the Brabus High Performance 4WD Full Electric vehicle, the prototype tuner car presents two enticing options. The Delta ES three-phase on-board charger replenishes the Brabus High Performance 4WD Full Electric’s lithium-ion battery in a very reasonable 5-hour time cycle. Using a 380-volt, 3-phase RWE Combi Station, Brabus touts the High Performance 4WD Full Electric sedan can be charged in only 1.5 hours.

Only a prototype show car, the course of automotive propulsion technology could see a vehicle similar to the Brabus High Performance 4WD Full Electric wetting performance appetites soon.

Thanks to high shipping costs, increased foreign wages and a weakening dollar, manufacturing in the United States has become a lot more attractive. More and more companies, especially automakers, are looking to build products where they are sold. Manufacturing is an important sector that is responsible for a lot of high-paying jobs.

General Motors, Ford and Chrysler in particular have added new production here in the U.S. Returning production has been referred to as “insourcing.” Man, they come up with terms for everything don’t they? For the U.S economy, this is good news.

Mercedes-Benz has announced a new $350 million investment into U.S manufacturing at its Tuscaloosa, Alabama plant. The investment will create 400 new jobs at the factory that produces the M-Class and R-Class crossovers, as well as the GL-Class SUV. Presumably the new model will be a crossover, but what will be produced hasn’t been announced yet.

Daimler Chief Executive Officer Dieter Zetsche says it will be an important vehicle to Mercedes: “This new model from the Tuscaloosa plant is an important element of our growth strategy….it is one of the ten additional models which we will introduce within the next four years alone across all segments.”

10 new models amounts to a big product offensive. It is likely that many of those new products will be based on the front-wheel drive Modular Front Architecture (MFA) that underpins the A- and B-Class. MFA is intended to provide a lot of Mercedes’ future growth in the U.S and around the world. Mercedes is going downmarket, like it or not. Production here isn’t limited to this new model though; Mercedes has also announced previously that the next-generation C-Class sedan will be produced in the U.S starting in 2014. We’re glad to see cars increasingly been being Made in America. Who would have thought those cars would be wearing the Three-Pointed star though?

By any measure, Mercedes-Benz’s attempt to crack the ultra-luxury market failed. The Maybach failed to achieve its sales goals and come anywhere close to Bentley or Rolls-Royce.

There are many reasons to speculate about why it didn’t do well – such as basically starting scratch with the name and a too-close similarity to the S-Class. However, the question now is what to do moving forward. If at first you don’t succeed try, try, try again right? The decision on whether or not to try again is going on at Mercedes right now, and apparently one of the possibilities has just been ruled out.

Mercedes was discussing a partnership with Aston Martin that would include developing an all-new super luxury sedan. The new sedan would be based on the next-generation 2013 S-Class (again) and produced at Aston’s factory in Gaydon, England. In return, Aston Martin would secure the use of Mercedes engines as well as platforms for its upcoming Lagonda brand.

German magazine Auto Motor und Sport reports that these talks have fallen apart, because Aston apparently is requiring too much. We weren’t too sure what Mercedes was thinking in the first place anyway – the deal seemed better for Aston Martin. Not that Aston doesn’t have name cachet, developmental prowess and the ability to design some of the world’s most beautiful automobiles (it certainly does). However, aside from design what could Aston bring to the table that Mercedes couldn’t? Regardless, the talks appear to have reached a dead end. That leaves Mercedes with the decision to either close the brand, or continue development in-house.

Closing Maybach would be a stinging admission of corporate defeat that seems quite unlike Mercedes. Financially it would make sense if the ultra-luxury market could be cracked as well; there are new opportunities for it opening up in countries like China. For what it’s worth, AM&S says the decision has been made to develop the next-generation Maybachs in-house again. Hopefully official confirmation isn’t too far around the corner about what is really going on.

Mercedes-Benz is making a strong push in Europe with the new A-Class and B-Class models. These cars will form an important part in Mercedes’ future growth strategy globally, but not necessarily here in the United States.

In Europe, Mercedes vehicles are more commonplace and mainstream, sold on a variety of price range and model styles. In the U.S Mercedes is more upscale, and the as such the company has been hesitant to introduce models like the B-Class. The B-Class doesn’t seem to us like a model that would be successful here.

That doesn’t mean Mercedes doesn’t want to increase sales by entering a lower price class though; Edmunds Inside Line reports that a new CLC sedan is coming, based on the new Modular Front Architecture (MFA) platform that underpins the A- and B-Class models.

Based on the MFA means front-wheel drive and a compact new model that would slot in below the rear-wheel drive C-Class. Instead of going downmarket with a stodgy vehicle like the B-Class, the CLC seems like a much better way to do it. Audi plans to enter the segment with the A3 sedan, previewed in March by a concept at the Geneva Motor Show. Given the small sedans from each of the manufacturers have grown in size, Audi’s entry slots in around where the old “B4″ A4 was. Mercedes would take a similar tack with the CLC, but would get to market first.

The name is interesting, as Inside Line reports it would be a four-door. However, it would be styled in the vein of the CLS four-door coupe, hence the CLC moniker. It should be quite stylish if the latest CLS is any indication. The goal of the CLS will be to increase entry-level sales significantly. Executives say it will clearly be a “real Mercedes-Benz” though; whatever that means. The New York Auto Show next April is said to host the debut of the CLC production car.

Ah, the Monterey Vintage Weekend is right around the corner, and that means a whole bunch of good things. There’s the races out at Laguna Seca, the Concours at Pebble Beach and the Concorso Italiano (is that still at The Quail?), and of course, auctions. And no, these aren’t you’re run of the mill Barrett/Jackson BS where some strip mall developer from Cheboygan drops $152,000 on a Z28 (further pricing well meaning but underfunded gearheads like me out of the market). No, these are serious auctions, where guys drop well into the seven-figures on cars that were nearly obliterated by the Nazis.

Or, as in the case of the car we are ogling here, built by Nazis. Okay, that’s unfair to stretch it that far. The Nazis only funded Mercedes Grand Prix program in 1937, which is when this car rolled out onto the Autobahn. They didn’t pay for this car to be built. Still, Germany in 1937 was a society on the brink of violent destruction, they just didn’t realize it yet.

The fact that a society that was burning books by the pile, calling people like Matisse and Picasso “degenerates” and hauling off political opposition leaders to Dachau for their own “protection” could produce something like the Mercedes-Benz 540 K Spezial Roadster at the same time makes the mind real.

Seriously, just look at this thing. There Germans get a lot of stick for having no aesthetic sense. And, as an Italian, I can say “deservedly so” in 99% of the cases, but the Mercedes-Benz 540 K Spezial Roadster is most definitely one of the 1% that’s left over.

Damn, the last time I saw curves like that on a German her name was … well, I’m a gentleman, and I won’t name names, but for the love of God, that’s a very pretty car. And get this, R&M auctions is not going to be auctioning off just one Mercedes-Benz 540 K Spezial Roadster, they are going to be rolling FIVE of the big Mercs across the block down in Monterey.

One of the most beautiful automobiles ever built, the 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Spezial Roadster is the one you see pictured here. It was designed by an outfit called Sinderfingen and one of only three (yeah, THREE) known to exist in this configuration: high doors, long tail, covered spare wheel and tire and, curiously, left-hand drive. It’s motivated down the Bahn by a 5.4-liter supercharged straight-eight engine that produces 180 horsepower. Yeah, laugh while you can, you little known nothing millennial dweeb, back in 37, that was some serious grunt. The roadster’s rarity and extraordinary desirability should guarantee eight-figure bidding say the folks at RM, and it might just break the record for the highest price ever paid for a Mercedes-Benz at auction.

Also, they will be auctioning off a dashing 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Sport Cabriolet. The body was also done up by those Sindelfingen guys and gets its sporting look from an extremely low windshield, a swept-back radiator treatment and twin spare tires mounted on its truncated rear end. On top of that, it is one of just a small number of transitional 500 K/540 K sport cabriolets but this one features the then-new 540 K supercharged engine.

With its rich red paint and tan leather interior, the 1935 Mercedes-Benz 500 K Roadster known as “Berlin Motor Show Car” has a value estimated by RM between $4 million and $5 million. This car was the centerpiece of the Mercedes-Benz stand at the ’35 Berlin Motor Show, so that lends it an even shinier level of desirability.

RM will also auction off a 1936 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Spezial Coupe. Also a former showpiece, this one displayed at the 1936 Paris Salon, the 540 K Spezial Coupe was also done by Sindelfingen, and was one of very few coupes built on the 540 K chassis. Estimated price? That would range from $3.25 million to $4 million.

And finally, there’s the 1939 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Spezial Roadster. Displaying unique styling cues like teardrop fenders and a tapered rear deck, the 540 K Spezial Roadster forecast Mercedes’ streamlined styling direction they would pursue after the war. Estimated value: $3.5 million to $4.5 million.

My fantasy/lotto garage just got a little more crowded.

Built as a personification of limitless automotive expression, the supercar is an alluring creation built to encapsulate the finest engineering and technology. Unsurprisingly assembled with literally gloved hands, an auto manufacturer’s supercar is often characterized by limited production numbers and a high price tag. A cost that would be considered extremely outrageous for the majority of everyday motorists, supercars naturally cater to the social and financial elite. While these specialized vehicles often fill the extrinsic as well as intrinsic expectations for luxury and image, even the rare automotive supercar creations is not enough to fulfill their reality.

Making exclusive vehicles into even more limited pieces of motoring mastery, some companies wait on the individuals willing to acquire an enhanced performance luxury car. Often defined as small automotive constructors based on the level of vehicle modifications, almost any popular supercar can be ratcheted-up beyond the original factory.

STaSIS Audi R8 V-10 Challenge Extreme Edition

Born on a V-10 powered Audi R8, West Virginia performance house STaSIS Engineering has turned the already feisty German supercar into a vehicle that can run circles around the Audi rings. A vehicle first presented at the 2010 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, the STaSIS Audi R8 5.2 Challenge Extreme Edition tests the widest boundaries for reengineering the mid-engined two-seater. Outfitted with a height adjustable suspension, Alcon brakes and forged 20-inch ultra-lightweight aluminum wheels, the STaSIS Audi R8 V-10 Challenge Extreme Edition vehicle attractive touches are all functional.

The most substantial improvement to the Audi R8 V-10 has major performance tweaks added to the 5.2 liter ten-cylinder powerplant. STaSIS Engineering modifications for the Audi R8 V-10 Challenge Extreme Edition engine is topped by an Eaton / Magnusson TVS 2300 supercharger generating 7.5 PSI of boost pressure. Coupled with engine electronic remapping and a CNC machined intake plenum, 525 horsepower of the factory Audi R8 V-10 is swelled to 710 horsepower through the Challenge Extreme Edition changes.

Netting a 35% greater power level than the stock supercar, the STaSIS Audi R8 Challenge Extreme Edition applies this extra momentum to 0 to 60 mile per hour acceleration times of just 3.1 seconds. The Audi R8 5.2 Challenge Extreme Edition adds $55,995 up to the price of Audi R8 V-10 coupe or roadster.

BMW Alpina B7 BiTurbo

Alpina’s business relationship with BMW started in the 1970s when the eventual car manufacturer operated as a sports car race team. Fielding the BMW 3.0 CSL in competition, Alpina brought their collaboration with BMW to the streets in the 1980s.

While the BMW M division attracts the most attention among enthusiasts, the Alpina B7 BiTurbo supplements the absence of BMW 7 Series version in the M line-up. In its fourth-generation, the Alpina B7 BiTurbo is a super sedan balancing high-performance, electronic ingenuity and luxury comfort. Incorporating its own LAVALINA leather and available piano lacquer interior trim, the performance sedan features a loaded assortment of BMW 7 Series equipment. Parking Distance Control, navigation system, xenon headlamps and control display with iDrive are included on the Alpina B7 BiTurbo.

Distinguishing the Alpina B7 BiTurbo is unique front and rear spoiler pieces as well as some of the most beautiful 21-inch Alpina Classic lightweight wheels. Powered by a 504 horsepower twin-turbocharged 4.4 liter V-8 engine, an all-wheel drive version of the Alpina B7 BiTurbo is also available to move the sedan. RUF RGT-8

Though Porsche has never produced an eight-cylinder powered 911 sports car, the RUF RGT-8 presents a vehicle to those desiring such a supercar. A packing a lightweight 4.5 liter V-8 engine, the RUF RGT-8 burns pavement with 550 horsepower fed through the rear wheels. An automatic limited-slip differential insures Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires rotate the stylish 19-inch forged alloy wheels. While official performance figures have yet to be released on this 2012 model vehicle, the RUF RGT-8 has a forecasted top speed of 205 miles per hour.

The two-seat interior features a securing protection of a roll-cage structure. Auto racing-inspired interior touches; RUF has also conducted the honoured tradition of weight-savings through the application of aluminum door panels and a carbon fiber rear engine cover.

While the architecture of the RUF RGT-8 is clearly identified with the Porsche 911, RUF Automotive acknowledges themselves as a small auto manufacturer distinct from the German sports car company’s image.

Edo Competition LP750

Outfitting a wide range of vehicles, Edo Competition has modified BMW M5 Touring wagons, Porsche 997s and even Maserati MC12 supercars. From the Lamborghini Murcielago, the Edo Competition LP750 was created this past February. Meant to be the fastest Lamborghini Murcielago ever, the Edo Competition LP750 is shaped with specially-contoured aerodynamic panels. A redesigned rear spoiler and ultra lightweight alloy wheels are worn on the Edo Competition LP750 providing a stylish extension of Lamborghini performance.

Speaking of performance, the Edo Competition LP750 receives a healthy power boost to the 6.5 liter V-12 engine. Totalling 750 horsepower, the special Lamborghini supercar presented by Edo Competition soars from 0 to 60 miles per hour in only 3.1 seconds. The Edo Competition LP750 takes just 24.5 seconds for a rush to 186 miles per hour from a standing stop.

As the Aventador replaces the Lamborghini Murcielago as the Italian sports car builder’s flagship, it only seems reasonable to believe an after-factory preparation of the new generation supercar is only a matter of months away.

Brabus 700 BiTurbo

The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG immediately impressed with its late 2010 introduction as a spiritual recreation of the 1955 SL300 Gull Wing. The first Mercedes-Benz production vehicle to originate from the AMG speed lab, the supercar arrived with prime performance attributes. Despite the stock SLS AMG’s 563 horsepower and a 197-mile per hour top speed, aftermarket companies have found ways to further dress up the Mercedes-Benz supercar. Long-time Mercedes-Benz outfitter Brabus was one company that quickly issued their exploration of the SLS AMG peak performance.

Lifting horsepower to 700 horsepower by adding a twin-turbocharger system to the 6.3 liter V-8 engine, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG is turned into the Brabus 700 BiTurbo. While the stock SLS AMG’s 0 to 60 mile per hour acceleration of 3.7 seconds remains largely unchanged, the Brabus 700 BiTurbo’s enhancements come at the top end. Unlimited top speed potential of 700 horsepower allows this Brabus supercar to sail up to 213 miles per hour.

Besides the advantages of raw horsepower, the Brabus 700 BiTurbo supercar is suited for a dramatic motoring experience. Possessing a special high performance exhaust featuring a pneumatic flap, the driver can adjust the engine note for a more civilized purr or a full grunt roar. The Brabus 700 BiTurbo can also be opted with the WIDESTAR body conversion kit adding additional genuine carbon fiber pieces on the exterior and interior.

Priced at the equivalent of $349,690 in US money, the Brabus 700 BiTurbo is a rocket ride left affordable to only a few land-based pilots.

Sovereign debt issues, a downgrade in the United States’ credit rating, riots in London – the world’s problems are many. Despite economic headwinds though, global sales of automobiles are up strongly, from the top down. Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz are all beneficiaries of this, with impressive totals for July.

The BMW Group has reported a record tally for July – 129,094 sales worldwide, including BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce. That is a rise of 7.6 percent overall. BMW brand sales stood at 108,721 units, up by 7.1 percent.

For the year, the BMW Group has sold a startling 962,468 cars, and the company says it is on track to hit 1.6 million units in 2011, a record tally. BMW’s sales were powered by strong increases for the new X3 crossover and 5-Series mid-size sedan.

Coming in at number two is Audi, which sold 106,000 cars in July, up by 16%. Audi has sold 758,950 cars so far this year. Audi has introduced a slew of new models recently, and the A6 and A7 are to thank for the largest month-to-month increase of the bunch.

Mercedes-Benz is a close third with 100,391 cars, up 2.7 percent. Including Smart, that total rises to 108,912 cars. For the year Mercedes-Benz has sold 710,922 cars. Mercedes, which is at a bit of a lull in its product cycle, is experiencing a bit slower growth.

However, results are all very close together for all three of the top automakers – core brands are separated by only a few thousand units. Count all subsidiaries though and BMW is a clear winner. The United States market is a key component of Audi’s growth – 9,146 Audis (up 17% percent) were sold here in July versus 26,120 BMWs. Audi has set a goal for itself to become the world’s top selling luxury automaker by 2015. At this rate, it looks like that goal is definitely within reach. Who would have thought just a few years ago? Things can change quickly.
