This past decade, in-car infotainment electronics has evolved from a multi-disc CD charger and the occasional rear-seat DVD viewing system to a level of innovation once thought of as absurd. Satellite radio, electronic GPS guidance and even wireless Internet connections on several luxury products provide a mere tip of the iceberg to what is currently available to vehicle occupants.

An exhibition that coincided with the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas provided a spotlight on all things high technology. Countless tablet computers, WiFi digital cameras and smartphones were the common spectacle of future electronics. Tempering with the usual balance of the CES in Las Vegas, representatives for the 20th century’s most pivotal invention (the automobile), brought some cutting-edge solutions for the 21st century’s demanding mobile technology world. In fact, Ford Motor Company took an innovation award away from the 2012 CES for their latest MyFord Mobile App.

On several occasions during the 2012 technology show in Las Vegas, a term began to swirl over automotive company products at a higher frequency than ever. The use of the term “The Cloud” was inserted into the presentation of several devices for the future of automotive infotainment. Instead of storing electronic programs and files on a physical hard drive or disk, information is stored through a virtual space called the “cloud”. As in-car electronic systems (most notably navigation services) progressed from the use of DVDs to hard drives that well surpasses many tablet PCs, the venture to the cloud for auto equipment manufacturers means limitless possibilities. The introduction of cloud computing principles have grown most prevalently with the popular navigation program called Google Maps employed on systems including the Ford SYNC and Audi MMI. Unlike previous GPS systems that either stored limited information or require time-consuming updates through a home computer, Google Maps uses a cloud interface to calculate routes. At the recent 2012 CES exhibition, auto companies are certainly becoming wiser to high-flying cloud computing ideals.

Making use of the open world of the cloud, Mercedes-Benz unveiled an upgraded version of their mbrace telematics suite of security and comfort connectivity features set for introduction starting the new SL roadster in the 2013 model year. An enhanced service, mbrace2 expands its reach in providing Mercedes-Benz occupants with a richer, even more connected electronic experience. Facebook, Yelp and Google Local Search are some Apps users of mbrace2 can expect immediately. Based on a cloud-based system, the mbrace2 system can be easily and conveniently updated allowing for delivery of an even greater selection of Apps in the future. The one necessity of cloud computing is a constant wireless connection. For the Mercedes-Benz mbrace2 system, Verizon will provide the subscribed service as it rolls out early this year.

With much of the auto sector devoted to the development of exclusive in-car infotainment solutions (i.e. MyFord Touch, Cadillac CUE, and Kia UVO), the outside stereo and car entertainment suppliers appear to have lost leverage on the marketplace. Other than the units created in-house or through partnerships, Aha by HARMAN have been making some serious inroads on the automotive infotainment market utilizing a cloud-platform. Launched as an iPhone App in 2009 as Aha Mobile, the web-based platform delivers an array of interactive products. Internet radio, navigation-related information, as well as audio dictation of Facebook and Twitter messaging is obtained through the Aha Mobile App that will also soon be joining the Android device marketplace. While Pioneer introduced the first automotive stereo system to incorporate Aha by HARMAN technology, the growth of the brand depends on forging relationships with the automakers.

During the 2012 CES, Subaru and Honda will be the first OEM deployment of Aha by HARMAN technology in the North American market. Demonstrated on a 2013 Subaru BRZ sports car at the 2012 CES exhibition in Las Vegas, the vehicle presented the new web-based entertainment options available through Aha by HARMAN. In the case of Subaru, customers can expect Aha by HARMAN to become part of what will be a “fourth band” of car radio joining AM, FM and satellite radio options on future vehicles.

Cloud computing principles will most definitely affect the evolution of an already growing market for in-car infotainment electronics. Late in 2011, Ford announced a brand-new MyFord Touch infotainment suite for their upcoming 2013 model year vehicles. As they outfit future products with the new in-car system, previous owners of Ford products featuring the first-generation MyFord Touch are being provided with an upgrade through a USB stick. While not a terribly labour intensive task, cloud computing solutions in automobiles would allow updates and improvements to be conducted near seamlessly.

For automotive consumers, cloud computing could unveil a reality where a car or truck could feature the same technological flexibility as an Apple iPad. Numerous Apps, limitless music and media storage, the most current road maps possible as well as effortless data sharing are advantages cloud-based vehicles can provide. Along with the expansive abilities of cloud-based in-car technology, new features such as voice recognition can be modified through software upgrades allowing motorists to immediately experience the advancements of technology (no longer a prize reserved for the purchaser of the newest vehicle). Among the only possible downside could be privacy and security of cloud-based systems. While all automotive uses of cloud computing engages methods to properly protect information, the future is as wide open as the cloud network for debate on this very accessible data.

The cloud computing integration with automobiles could also mean a buyer trading in their vehicle can take more than the custom floor mats and the air freshener with them to the next automotive upgrade. Contingent on the fact a buyer stays with a single auto manufacturer (at least for the time being), it will be highly likely all unique Apps and set-up information can be seamlessly passed to the next vehicle.

So manuals aren’t dead, after all. The third pedal on many cars has disappeared in favor of automatic transmissions and dual clutch gearboxes. In day-to-day driving and traffic we have to say we prefer the car doing the shifting (ducks for cover), but the choice needs to be there for everyone to make.

Dearth of manuals on the market has been widespread enough that Car and Driver started a “Save the Manuals” movement in 2010. Hey, why not? They have everything else: save the whales and the tigers and mutts at your local Humane Society. That effort was started after even exotic companies like Ferrari abandoned the traditional manual.

Other manufacturers, like Porsche, say they will continue to offer a manual for as long as customers demand it. Porsche recently stretched the boundaries of modern manuals by offering a seven-speed in the new 911.

C&D reports a win for their “Save the Manuals” effort with news that Ford is expanding manual availability to the Focus Titanium. The Titanium is the top-shelf trim line of the Focus. Manual transmissions have thus far only been available on the base S and SE models. SEL and Titanium buyers have to make do with the auto. The Titanium is available with a handling package that makes the drive experience a lot more engaging. As such the Titanium with handling package is the enthusiasts choice….at least until the manual-only ST arrives later this year.

With Ford seeing this demand for manual Titanium models, it is going to start offering them beginning in March. Somewhat of a conundrum though is the fact that the take rate on existing manuals hasn’t been to great; only seven percent C&D reports. That likely comes down to the limited availability issue; most Focus buyers don’t want the stripper model. With all the demand for a third-pedal Titanium, it should see higher take rates.

Number one can be a blessing, and a curse – just ask Toyota, who quickly fell the top spot. Manufacturers who chase volume exclusively often find it comes at the expense of quality and profit margins. The better choice is to make more money on each unit, thanks to profit-enhancing options. Unfortunately a lot of manufacturers set their goals according to volume. Ford in recent times has taken a more quality over quantity approach than ever before.

The newest models are now positioned as more premium entrants – examples being the current Taurus and the Focus. The Focus in particular is more upscale and includes a myriad of technology and luxury options. This is helping to increase profit margins per model. The 2013 Fusion looks to follow in the footsteps of these cars.

The current Fusion, which was updated in 2010, has set a torrential sales pace. Last year a record amount of Fusions were sold, despite it being at the end of its life-cycle. You would only assume the 2013 Fusion, which is on a whole other level inside and out, would continue this record.

In fact with all this momentum, taking the top spot in the mid-size sedan sales race wouldn’t seem to be a stretch. Ford says this isn’t their goal though – and even if it was, it may not even be attainable. That’s because Ford says they can produce a maximum of about 400,000 Fusions a year. We think they could push a bit more than they if they really wanted to, but Toyota on the other hand has 500,000 units of capacity at its two plants in Indiana and Kentucky. The current Camry isn’t running at capacity though. This year, Toyota expects to produce about 414,000 Camrys. Ford, on the other hand, projects that the 2013 Fusion will reach 310,000 units. The final total will probably be north of that. Ford’s head of marketing, Jim Farley, has this to say:

“Between price and volume, we’ll sort out the right mix. I don’t think we’re very enamored with being number one just to be number one. We’re much more enamored with the right price point and right kind of people to buy the car.” Bottom line is Fusion is expected to continue to set sales records. That is as good of a place to start as any.

Sometimes, a company will stick with the same tagline for years. There are a few examples of that in the automotive industry, such as BMW’s Ultimate Driving Machine and Lexus’ “The Relentless Pursuit of Perfection.” Having the same, defined message helps brand identity – if you can find one that really sticks. Volkswagen’s recent “Das Auto” has fit the company perfectly, and we’re finding that most people really associate it with VW.

On the other end of the spectrum is let’s say, Buick. Over the past few years Buick has had so many tag lines. “The Spirit of American Style”, “Beyond Precision”, “Drive Beautiful”, “The New Class of World Class,” Yeah, and that’s just the ones we can remember. For Ford the slogan has been “Drive One.” It was introduced in 2006 as a new generation of products were being launched.

That was back when Toyota was on a roll and the domestics weren’t considered as much by consumers. “Drive One” was designed to get people to take a look at Ford again – which incidentally was also the goal of the tagline before that. “If You Haven’t Looked at a Ford lately…look again.” It was a lot clunkier way of saying the same thing.

Fast forward to today and Ford is in a very different position than it was in 2006. It is recognized as a technological leader and its new cars are consistently rated at the top of their class. Vehicles like the Ford Explorer, Taurus and Focus. These cars look to be top contenders in their segments. To reflect its new position as a leader in the marketplace, Ford has announced a new slogan…..”Go Further.” It will be launching across the world later this year – it is already being used for advertisements in Europe. While not terribly original or clever, we think this fits where Ford is at right now very well.

Stock cars in NASCAR share nothing with their road-going counterparts save for a traditionally cartoonish front-end design. Manufacturers pick a name and slap it on their race cars. Chevrolet fields the Impala, Ford the Fusion, Dodge the Charger and Toyota its best-selling Camry.

Earlier this month, Ford introduced the redesigned 2013 Fusion at the North American International Auto Show. You know what that means – time for a new stock car design. Mid-size sedans have traditionally been one of the biggest segments, so Ford has used the Fusion since 2006. Prior to that it was the Taurus. The new 2013 Ford Fusion NASCAR Sprint Cup car was introduced today at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. Ford says it is a product of a years worth of design and aerodynamics work.

The company put a particular emphasis on making it look closer to the standard car then it ever has before. In that respect, we’ve really got to hand it to them. The Fusion race car looks closer to the road-going Fusion than anything we’ve seen out of NASCAR in a long time. The car includes pretty realistic proportions up front, with replicated headlights and Ford’s gaping maw grille. The Ford logo also features very prominently on the front and sides of the vehicle – it is part of an effort to boost the brand. Jamie Allison, director of Ford racing, talked about the project:

“We wanted Fusion to be the car that helped return ‘stock car’ to NASCAR…..I think fans, when they see the car, are just going to smile and cheer. It is going to reengage them with the sport and make the sport better because there is just something natural about seeing race cars that look like cars in their driveways.”

Many design hours were put in to do just that. It’s an attention to detail and effort that just hasn’t been put into these cars by other manufacturers. You can check the 2013 Ford Fusion race car in our gallery below. The car is set to make its racing debut next January for the 2013 race campaign.

As expected early this 2012 year, automakers posted some very optimistic sales numbers for the United States marketplace for 2011. A place where consumers still love their cars, 2011 provided an excellent year for North American car fans. No other time in the North American auto industry has motorists been able to explore so much freedom and choice.

In only three years, the American auto industry has turned from forecasted shambles to a rosier, settled environment. Hitting Chrysler and General Motors in the most severe manner, no major auto company was truly immune to the economic troubles started in late 2008. Similar to reaction from the global banking and financial sector, it wasn’t until a key period where the public truly understood until bankruptcy papers were being filed.

The combination of troubled business models and customers losing access to money or car loans needed for purchases led to a disappointing start of the 2009 calendar year. Between seven major automakers selling vehicles in the United States (GM, Ford, Chrysler, Nissan, Honda, Toyota and Hyundai/Kia), auto sales amounted to 9,124,380 cars in all of 2009 (5,145,746 units lower than just two years prior). It was only through a United States government sponsored new car purchase program that the tides began to reverse. Known as “Cash for Clunkers,” motorists were able to trade in an old vehicle for a guaranteed trade-in credit.

After the 12 months of 2011, the same seven automakers have steadily performed better than the disastrous 2009 auto sales year. When the 2011 year ended, 10,987,403 were sold by the seven high volume automakers in the United States. Up 20.4 percent from 2009, the 2011 results continued the gains made after 2010 as some elements of the economy recuperated. Recognizing there is so many reasons to celebrate the improvement of the North American motor vehicle industry, the recent auto sale numbers indicating positive momentum from dismal 2009 figures have shown that the current car business is far from past glory.

The Detroit Three

For automakers Chrysler, Ford and General Motors, six years have seen once-proclaimed Big Three transform into the more modest moniker Detroit Three. In 2005, General Motors led United States car sales handsomely with 4,454,385 vehicles. Thanks to declining sales due to a changing economy and the doom of bankruptcy, 2009 vehicle sales dropped 53.2 percent for GM at just 2,084,492 units. Recovering with auto sales reaching 2,503,820 vehicles after 2011, the improvement comes with the loss of brands Pontiac and Hummer as well as the offloading of the now troubled Saab. The major source for General Motors’ traction in the United States automotive marketplace remains the Chevrolet division with 1,775,812 products sold last year. In 2011, the Chevrolet Cruze accounted for 231,732 of Chevrolet’s sales becoming a star for the auto industry.

In the case of Chrysler Group, a sales drop of 59.6 percent from 2005 to 2009 indicated a particularly volatile presence not seen since the 1979 bankruptcy. Over the past six years, Chrysler was separated from Daimler-Benz, sold to a private equity group, filed bankruptcy and was partly rescued by Italian auto giant Fiat Group. As Chrysler’s 1,369,114 unit sales recovery in 2011 is still almost one million vehicles short of 2005 levels. Chrysler will be relying on vehicles like the 2013 Dodge Dart to entice consumers while also attempting to lure commercial vehicle contracts with the Ram brand that should include at least one new work van in the near future.

While Ford Motor Company escaped the need for government assistance, the past six years has taken the Blue Oval car company on a wild ride. Selling 3,168,156 vehicles in 2005, Ford Motor Company posted 2,148,806 in 2011 sales. As Ford devoted their business back to cars, truck sales have taken a sizable hit. Despite a reduction in truck sales, the Ford F-150 and Ford Escape remain the top-selling vehicles by the carmaker in 2011. Losing Mercury and still struggling to bring Lincoln back to the luxury car forefront challenges Ford’s total recovery. A reborn Ford brand line-up that includes the 2013 Taurus and Fusion sedans plus the 2013 Escape crossover are future vanguards for healthy auto sales.

Some people (even the same ones who originally wished the US government to protect financial institutions with taxpayer dollars) wanted to allow General Motors and Chrysler to succumb to liquidation. Led first by former president George W Bush’s administration with emergency financial aid and later by Barack Obama’s White House directing the needed loans through GM and Chrysler’s bankruptcy, both car companies survived. Wanting to be relieved of the public taunting of phrases such as “Government Motors”, GM and Chrysler paid back the emergency assistance late in 2011. Regardless of political leaning or perhaps free of such constraints, government intervention of the two American auto companies stabilized what could have been a much harsher industry-wide events. What if many more autoworkers would be out of the job? What if the 100th year of Chevrolet had been marred with a giant production blackout continuing to this day? Those and other questions can be answered hypothetically.

US Auto Market for Import Brands

While the mighty Detroit Three restructured their business model, many would believe the Japanese automakers Honda and Toyota have finally entered prime position to eat drastically eat away at the market. However, just like the American based companies, the Japanese carmakers have been suffering similar sales slippage from 2005 levels. Toyota Motor Corporation 2011 auto sales of 1,644,661 units is 27 percent lower than the 2005 year (Toyota fell just short of Chrysler with yearlong sales in 2005). Honda’s United States auto sales have also been noticeably lower at 21.5 percent over 2005 numbers. Third place in US sales among the Japanese carmakers is Nissan. Suffering a drop of about 230,000 vehicles from 2005 to 2009, Nissan pulled an enviable achievement recovering all but around 34,000 units in US sales delivering 1,042,534 vehicles to customers during 2011.

Bucking the trend of the economic hardships felt by leading auto companies was the South Korea’s Hyundai/Kia. In 2009, Hyundai/Kia actually posted a modest growth. Still emerging as a trustworthy company in the United States in 2005, the South Korean entity of Hyundai Motor America and sister group Kia Motors were able to benefit from a slimmer market profile. Kia and Hyundai brands have steadily sailed forward in American auto sales that totalled 1,131,183 vehicles after the 2011 calendar year. Increasing annual sales by 400,000 cars and crossover vehicles 2005 through 2011, records a sensational 54.77 percent increase in sales.

The US Auto Sales Recovery to Date

Despite successes and disappointments, the results of these seven top auto companies (totalling 10,987,403 units in 2011) shows that recovery is not yet a full recuperation to previous years. The point of observing this six-year span of sales numbers in the United States paints a picture of a different time in the auto industry on a continent. From the buzz at the upcoming auto shows, with all the uncertainty that recalls, the latest in advanced propulsion technology, the lessons of the past pushes a stride to former glory or even to a greater future.

Ford Fusion, is that you? The 2013 Ford Fusion looks nothing like the mid-size sedan that replaced it. WIth the 2013 model, Ford didn’t opt for a careful evolution of its mid-size sedan, it opted for a radical change.

That is despite the current Fusion’s winning sales streak. For 2011, the Fusion logged a record amount of sales. That is despite being at the end of its model cycle. Judging by the 2013 model, that sales tear should only continue. The Fusion is the future look of Ford – most models in the lineup will adapt to this styling language. The Evos Concept previewed the change Ford’s design will be undertaking over the next few years.

We’ll be honest – we never were big fans of the current Fusion. The grille looks like a Gilette razor, the rear comes off as cheap and nondescript and the greenhouse is a bit bated. The 2013 model has a kinetic, European-style design with sales all over the world in mind. Much more upscale than anything Ford has put out in this sector, the Fusion has hints of Aston Martin design, particularly in the front.

Instead of three chrome bars, the grille has thin slats, with a huge surface area that gives the Fusion a gaping maw front end. It’s classically good-looking, and it should be appealing to a lot more people than the current Fusion. The roofline is pretty rakish for a car in this segment too. A few years ago, (*cough* 2006 Fusion *cough*) who would have thought Ford would put out something so upscale? The Fusion appears to be one of the leading sedans in this segment, leaving traditional competitors from Toyota and Honda in the dust. And as a side note, did you notice that front A-pillar windows are making a comeback?

Underneath the hood, Ford follows the trend of ditching six-cylinder power for mid-size cars. Hyundai started it, Chevrolet followed and now Ford is doing the same thing. Pretty soon Toyota may be the only manufacturer to offer a V-6 mid-size car.

The Fusion will be available in S, SE, Titanium, Hybrid and Energi trims. S, SE, and Titanium will be available with three engines, starting off with a naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter four making 170 horsepower and 170 pound feet of torque.

A step up is a 1.6-liter (man engine sizes are getting small!) EcoBoost with 179 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque. What is the point of the 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine again? It only offers 9 more hp and 2 more lb-ft of torque. Big deal. The gem of the range though is the 2.0-liter EcoBoost four, which makes 237 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque. These engines will be mated to a six-speed automatic, or on the 1.6-liter a manual transmission be available. An all-wheel drive system is available on the top-end 2.0-liter EcoBoost model.

The Fusion looks to continue Ford’s reputation for excellent fuel economy, with the Hybrid coming in at 47 mpg. The 1.6-liter EcoBoost should hit 26 city, 37 highway and the 2.0-liter checks in at 23/33 mpg. As for the Energi hybrid, Ford says they expect 100MPGe. The Fusion is a product developed under One Ford, meaning what you see will be sold in markets all around the world. The Fusion will go on sale here in the United States later this year, with an introduction for world markets as the Mondeo beginning next year.

After the magnificent display that was the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, I wrote an article on the notion that the California coast was the place automakers preferred to display their latest creations and concepts. Wondering if the 2012 auto show in Detroit would be have the same amount of enthusiasm, the sensory overload-inducing debuts set to occur at this week’s opening of the North American International Auto Show leads me to concludes thoughts of the Motor City becoming less of an industry focal point seems a waste of mental energy. The biggest auto manufacturers of the United States, Japan, Europe and even India are expected to provide an automotive delight.

Ahead of major auto shows, the marketing departments of carmakers are challenged to entice interest in a vehicle debut without giving too much away from the physical spectacle. Leading into the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, various tactics are being rolled out by auto brands. Whether they want to unveil the entire full image of the vehicle or a mere teaser photo, the auto companies are careful in their attempts to grab the attention of media and the overall car-adoring public.

For the 2012 edition of the North American International Auto Show, the following is a few of the production-based 2013 model year vehicles making a world debut:

Toyota Prius c

The smallest member of the now established Prius hybrid family, Toyota plans to capitalize on the high efficiency small car market with what will become North America’s first subcompact gasoline-electric vehicle. Roughly 5 inches longer than the 2012 Yaris, the Toyota Prius c liftback body style is a careful execution of small car values with high technology.

Beyond the Toyota Synergy Drive powertrain technology, the interior of the Prius c will incorporate an array of infotainment solutions thoughtful to the youth market the Japanese-based automaker wants to attract. With Bluetooth standard, optional equipment to be offered on the Toyota Prius c includes Toyota Entune multimedia system. Through Toyota Entune, occupants of the Prius c are given access to traffic and weather updates as well as Pandora Internet radio.

Two vital unknowns remain with the pending introduction at the 2012 auto show. Firstly, what will be the fuel economy expectations from the Toyota Prius c hybrid powertrain? Toyota has indicated a city range of more than 50 miles per gallon is estimated for the smallest Prius. Secondly, when the Prius c reaches showrooms, what can the younger generation of Toyota buyers expect to buy for the subcompact? If placed around the $20,000 range (in between the Yaris and common Prius hybrid), the Toyota Prius c could be a major spoiler to the eco-car marketplace.

Cadillac ATS

No longer the 1950s and 1960s when Cadillac’s hulking convertibles defined American luxury, it’s become the objective of the division in the 21st century to redefine its image among the top premium cars. While not hitting a home run with every new product, Cadillac has cemented a reputation for featuring solid luxury and effective technology on smaller vehicles. Applying their lessons to what will be their smallest production vehicle since the disastrous Cimarron of the 1980s, the 2013 Cadillac ATS will be the General Motors division latest test in the modern luxury car marketplace.

The Cadillac ATS has expected to be the most vibrant display of compact vehicle refinement of their new car line-up at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Through the teaser image, we can expect to see the 2013 Cadillac ATS to resemble its bigger brother CTS sedan. One of the more compelling characteristics of the compact car is the use of an all-new rear wheel drive platform. Specifically aiming at the BMW 3-Series and the Mercedes-Benz C Class, the Cadillac ATS sedan will have a strong assortment of engine power to support what should be a fierce luxury car battle. To offer three powerplant choices, the 2013 ATS will offer a 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engine, the 3.6 liter V-6 already found on Cadillac products and a new 270-horsepower, turbocharged 2-liter engine to debut in the vehicle.

The 2013 Cadillac ATS will also feature available Magnetic Ride Control suspension and the brand’s latest CUE in-car infotainment system.

Ford Fusion

The third-highest selling vehicle in the Ford Motor Company behind the Ford F-150 and the Ford Escape, the Fusion exists in the narrow but important market segment of mid-sized family sedans.

Dodge Dart

The first all-new product created for the North American market by Chrysler through its 2009 collaboration with Fiat Group, the 2013 Dodge Dart rests on the same compact platform as the Alfa Romeo Giulietta. While the Giulietta is a hatchback, the 2013 Dodge Dart making its debut in Detroit will be a more Americanized four-door sedan shape. Conforming to the Dodge brand identity, the Dart will be aggressively styled with touches found on the new Dodge Charger. Mechanicals for the 2013 Dodge Dart is likely to include a 1.4 liter and 2-liter engine with an available 9-speed automatic transmission.

The smallest vehicle in a brand line-up, the 2013 Dodge Dart will perhaps face the fiercest fight in the modern car industry. Ford Fiesta, Chevy Sonic, Hyundai Accent and Toyota Yaris have either new or redesigned products each providing competitive powertrains, standard equipment and fuel economy.

Nissan Pathfinder Concept

Nissan’s most enduring SUV (sport utility vehicle) brand, the Pathfinder lived up to its name since debuting in 1986. In constant production since introduction, the Nissan Pathfinder’s ability to connect with the North American consumer led the Japan-derived brand to share the Pathfinder name briefly with the large Amanda SUV. Rolling out at the 2012 North American International Auto Show as a concept vehicle, the exterior design for Nissan’s latest generation of the Pathfinder should remain close to the production model set for release later this year.

A four-wheel drive set to offer seating for seven passengers, the Nissan Pathfinder Concept will feature a refreshed exterior design. A more aerodynamic look than the predecessor model, the teaser photo of the Pathfinder Concept unveils a roof similar to the Nissan Quest minivan and body panels featuring aggressive flaring like the Juke. Buyers of the next generation Nissan Pathfinder should feel confident that the powerplant options should consist of the VQ series six-cylinder and the VK series eight-cylinder engine.

Users of Facebook will be some of the first observers to see the Nissan Pathfinder Concept. After 8:30am on Monday, Facebook users who log into the Nissan page will be able to view the new vehicle after clicking on the “Pathfinder Reveal” tab.

Plugging away a popular marketing slogan, the television or radio would ask, “Have you driven a Ford lately?” In the newly concluded 2011 year, the number of people who would answer ‘yes’ to that question has grown comfortably. Founded in 1903 and becoming key figure to the development of the American auto industry, Ford Motor Company’s second century had the car manufacturer adjusting to new techology in luring customers to the blue oval.

Ford SYNC, EcoBoost engines and a car-based brand philosophy have been key to pulling the Ford Motor Company above troubled financial waters of five years ago. Overall for the Ford Motor Company, there was an 11 percent sales improvement equating to 2,148,806 vehicles sold. For the Ford brand itself, the 12 months of 2011 was marked with United States sales topping the 2-million mark for the first time since 2007.

Leading the Ford brand cars and utility vehicles on the sales chart was the Ford Escape. Set for redesign in this upcoming year with a 2013 model year vehicle, the older body style Escape remained sensationally popular with 254,293 sold. Older Ford products took the top-2 places in passenger car and crossover utility sales as 248,067 units of the Ford Fusion left dealerships in 2011. The Ford Fusion is also due for a 2013 model year reinvention to be unveiled at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Though the relaunch of the Ford Explorer on a more modern car-like utility platform for the 2011 model year was meant to enforce the vehicle as a premium offering, the large crossover observed the second-highest sales boost in whole Ford Motor Company line-up. The EcoBoost-powered utility vehicle seating up to 7 passengers attracted 135,704 in sales. A whopping 123.6 percent increase over last year, the first full year of production for the new Explorer puts the 21-year old Ford product back above the six-digits for sales.

The Ford Fiesta, selling 68,574 models in 2011, recorded the highest increase in product demand this past year. While much of the 2011 year rise can be attributed to the fact this was the Fiesta’s first full year in the United States marketplace, the results are nonetheless strong. The Ford Fiesta sales in 2011 were only about 1,900 short of the Ford Mustang’s yearly tally. The 2012 Ford Focus sales were in 2011 accounting for 175,717 vehicles but showed only a modest 1.9 percent growth over last year.

Ford trucks saw a considerably positive rise for almost all products led, of course, by the Ford F-Series line with 584,917 units sold across a wide product spectrum. All news that the compact Ford Ranger pickup was soon-to-be discontinued, a 27.9 percent increase in sales brought in 70,832 vehicle sales. With a new Ford Ranger planned for other parts of the world, the positive sales of the compact pickup could be motivation to reconsider the vehicle’s viability in the North American market.

While the Ford brand exceeded its thundering sales surge of 2010, the Lincoln division holds a discrete celebration after the final 2011 sales results. For the luxury car brand, the outgoing supply of Lincoln vehicles to the American market largely retained the levels of last year. Selling 85,643 units in 2011, Lincoln sales were down by just 185 vehicles in total or 0.2 percent lower. The Lincoln MKZ topped the division’s sales as the brand was able to sell 27,579 examples of the mid-sized premium sedan. Though the MKZ and the small MKX crossover posted modest gains, Lincoln’s larger MKS sedan as well as the large Navigator slipped in sales rounding out the 2011 calendar year. Suffering a 32.4 percent sales drop was the troubled Lincoln MKT crossover vehicle that topped-out at 5,024 units in 2011. Even before the dismal sales results, demand of the MKT has been less than expected by Lincoln. Plans are to improve the Lincoln MKT sales in 2012 by advertising fleet use of the large crossover as a substitute to the departed Town Car.

Ford Motor Company is still in a position to grow through 2012. With the new C-Max and Focus Electric upcoming alongside updated versions of the Taurus, Mustang, Escape and Fusion, the next 12 months will leave blue oval fans anticipating products delivering an equally as strong report next year.

Happy New Year! It’s 2012, and the biggest car show of the year is exactly a week away. The North American International Auto Show kicks off next Monday, and it has a full slate of debuts scheduled. The biggest from Ford will be the new Fusion mid-size sedan.

The current generation Fusion was introduced in 2006, and a heavy mid-cyle enhancement followed in 2010. For 2011 the Fusion has posted its best sales year ever, despite being at the end of it model run. With all that momentum, look for the next generation model to hit higher figures than ever. Future mid-size number one? Very possible. While the 2013 Fusion is still under wraps (they’ve done a remarkably good job of keeping it a secret), Ford is letting loose some of the details. Ford is a master at this kind of press release marketing; they dribble out information bit-by-bit.

A new feature debuting on the 2013 Fusion is Lane Keeping System (LKS). To provide feedback, there is a digital camera mounted on the rearview mirror with a full-view of the road. This is in contrast to older, more expensive systems that used radars placed on the front of the vehicle. It the “democratization of technology”, evidenced by the widespread availability of technologies once only available on luxury cars. When the system senses the driver is drifting in his lane, it gives a warning and sends a vibration to the steering wheel.

If the driver ignores this, the steering wheel will continue to vibrate and a power will be applied to nudge the car back into its lane. In addition, the warning icon will turn red. Ford said a lot of work has been put into the system to make it smooth and accurate, and that it will be debuting across the lineup rather quickly. Drivers would be well-off to learn not to depend on these kind of technological aids. However, with all the crazy drivers out there we welcome these technologies being added to help make our roads safer.

The turbocharged, direct-injected one-liter engine found inside the Ford Evos concept sleigh propels Santa Claus and the sizable cargo with 123 horsepower. Productive EcoBoost power, the high fuel efficiency is aided by an EcoMode that relays gas-saving information for the jolly elf. It is in this area of fuel consumption Ford claims their Evos concept sleigh can reward Santa with up to a 90 percent reduction in fuel costs. Said to complete the entire 2011 Christmas Eve night trip on 10,011,868 liters (2644855.7 gallons) of gasoline, Ford estimates a total cost around 15.5 million dollars American for fuel. The new Evos concept sleigh is also said to emit less Co2 emissions than the nine-reindeer team that pulls Santa’s famous vessel through the world journey.

Jingle bell rocking behind a steering wheel, Santa Claus will find the Ford Evos concept sleigh’s interior is optimized with the power of Ford SYNC. Featuring connectivity options linking Santa’s smartphone through the in-car entertainment system, there is never a reason to take the modern reigns of the Ford-powered sleigh thanks to hands-free calling and audio incoming texts. With a new year dawning in just a few more days, the choice of a new car could be a pending resolution. Presented with a wide variety of vehicle brands, model and types in 2011, the 2012 calendar guarantees customers will have even more to choose from at dealership lots. Impressive fuel economy, pint-sized performance and efficiently planned cargo space are some motivating factors behind the upcoming production vehicle offerings.

Thanks to the somewhat confusing nature of model year classifications by auto companies, some of the automobiles expected within the upcoming 12 months are actually labelled as 2013 cars. The following list of released or soon-to-be released products is some key vehicle prospects for 2012.

2013 Ford Escape

Despite the fact many automotive journalists would have deemed the current Ford Escape as a dated, truck-like compact utility vehicle, customers clambered for the versatile product ringing in 228,719 in sales up to November of 2011. Mitsubishi’s first electric vehicle to be sold in the United States, the 66-horsepower i subcompact car has been a temptress for the past several years on the auto show circuit in North America to green fans. Measuring only 144.8 inches in length, the small stature if the 2012 Mitsubishi i balances comfort, safety and weight. In a marketplace that is becoming inundated with the electric or electric-assisted powertrains, the Mitsubishi i have one quality that could lure a few adopters to this zero emission driving craze. Mitsubishi is pricing the electric-powered i under $30,000 before a set $7,500 federal tax credit.

Ferrari FF

Classic elements merge with modern technology and expertise to craft the Ferrari FF. The V-12 powerplant configuration is a familiar Ferrari trait on the FF. Producing 651 horsepower, the 6.3 liter, 12-cylinder engine features the efficiency of direct injection based on Ferrari’s new HELE (High Emotion Low Emissions) philosophy. The Ferrari FF is powered by the Italian automaker’s first production bound all-wheel drive system called 4RM. Styled by Ferrari’s long-time design collaborator Pininfarina, the FF supercar employs elegant exterior touches despite adapting to an unusual ‘shooting brake’ shape. A 2+2 sports car bringing plenty of refreshing nuances to the Ferrari division, the all-new FF most astonishing feature is presented at a spot uncommon for exotic cars. Volkswagen Golf R

One of the ultimate factory-prepped sport compacts currently sold in Europe, the Volkswagen Golf R has been a high performance terror. In 2012, the North American market has secured for limited release of the all-wheel drive Golf R. The Volkswagen Golf R combines the Haldex® all-wheel drive system and a six-speed manual transmission along with sportier handling to provide a sensational road manner. Powered by a 256 horsepower, turbocharged 2-liter engine, the 2012 Volkswagen Golf R takes under six seconds to launch to 60 miles per hour from a standstill. Presented in three and five door versions, visual cues identifying the Golf R from its lower powered counterpart is the unique rear diffuser, front grille as well as brake calipers painted in gloss black.

Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

Turbocharging and supercharging has increased in prevalence dramatically recently. Hyundai ditched six-cylinder power in its mid-size Sonata and many other automakers are following suit. As far as a company who has spearheaded this change though, we’d have to give it to Ford.

It has given a catchy marketing name to something that has real results; increased power with improved fuel economy. Beginning in models like the Ford Taurus SHO and Lincoln MKT, Ford has steadily expanded EcoBoost availability across the lineup. Look for more of it to continue in the future. The one dud has been the four-cylinder in the Explorer. Really guys, what’s the point of that? We thought that was pretty much DOA.

When Ford announced the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 for the F-150, many in the industry were similarly skeptical though. How were truck buyers going to take to this? They seem to be a more traditional bunch that is more likely to go with naturally-aspirated V-6 and V-8 engines. Ford’s strategy of proving engine durability (Baja 1000 anyone?) and marketing has paid off. Ford is reporting that over 100,000 EcoBoost F-150′s have been sold in 2011, just as it projected. The EcoBoost model has been on the market since February of this year.

The 100,000 milestone was crossed last Wednesday. As it has done with other models, Ford has positioned EcoBoost as an upmarket offering. It commands an $895 premium over the 5.0-liter V-8 equipped F-150. The EcoBoost has accounted for 40 percent of F-150 sales. Overall take rate for V-6 engines has increased by 50 percent for 2011, meaning the 3.7-liter naturally-aspirated V-6 isn’t doing too bad for itself either.

In fact, Doug Scott, group marketing manager for the F-Series trucks, says that the last time Ford sold as many V-6 trucks was in 1985. Increased sales of more efficient six-cylinders means some nice improvements to Ford’s CAFE numbers. Normally there would be a hit to Ford’s bottom line as well, but thanks to the price hike for the Ecoboost variant that doesn’t appear to be the case. With a full calendar year of sales in 2012 and boosted production, look for F-150 EcoBoost sales to only increase in the year ahead.

Today, the two pure electric vehicles on the United States market are the Tesla Roadster and the Nissan LEAF. They will soon be Ford Focus Electric and Tesla Model S. General Motors and Honda also plan to enter the market with their Spark EV and Fit EV models, respectively. The Focus Electric is next up, and Ford has announced the start of production this month at it’s Michigan Assembly Plant.

The Focus Electric is Ford’s only all-electric, zero-emissions vehicle. The company says it is the world’s first five-passenger electric production vehicle with the equivalent of 100 MPGe. More important though is the Focus Electric’s quick charging ability.

The car takes only three hours to recharge its battery pack when using a 240V charging station. That is half the time of the Focus Electric’s nearest competitor, the LEAF. That means the car charges at a rate of 30 miles per hour. Ford hasn’t released official statistics on range between charges, but it is targeting around 100 miles.

The Focus Electric definitely isn’t cheap though – Ford is charging $39,995, just a hair under 40 grand. That is a few thousand more than the Nissan LEAF. Ask us which one we’d choose though and there is a clear answer: the Focus Electric. It appears to be a much more well-developed vehicle, using the refined Focus as its basis.

It’ll be an interesting sales race to watch between the LEAF and Focus Electric. People have been comparing the Chevrolet Volt with the LEAF, and surprisingly the LEAF has done better. The Focus Electric will be sold in just a two markets from the get go – California and New York. As production ramps up, the car will be sold in 19 markets: Atlanta, Austin, Houston, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Detroit, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, New York, Orlando, Phoenix, Tucson, Portland, Raleigh-Durham, Richmond, Seattle and Washington, D.C. So if you live in one of those, you’re in luck. Ford determined these to be the markets best suited to electric car sales, at least in the beginning. It remains to see if availability will be expanded nationwide as time goes on.

Presenting the line-up for their future commercial division in North America, Ford Motor Company officially confirmed United States roads can prepare to witness another product of their existing global portfolio. On the success of the Transit Connect van, the larger Ford Transit will be selling in America starting for the 2013 model year.

Featuring a look consistent with Ford vehicles, the Ford Transit characteristics also includes the admirable traits of a high roof profile. Only announcing the arrival of the Transit large van for 2013, Ford has not stated what North America buyers can expect. Available in front-wheel, rear-wheel and all-wheel drive models in Europe, the Ford Transit also comes in a multitude of body lengths. Similar to the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van, roof height options exist with the Ford Transit expanding cargo room and flexibility. The European Ford Transit vans feature turbodiesel power that also includes a model utilizing ECOnetic Technology. Based on diesels still being a tough sell stateside, it should not be surprising if a gasoline model of the Ford Transit appears specifically for the marketplace. Said to be at least 300 pounds lighter than the E-Series, Ford boasts the Transit will be a more fuel-efficient option combined with smaller engines.

The arrival of the Ford Transit coming to the North American marketplace comes with news that the long-running E-Series van will be discontinued. Celebrating 50 years on the market during the 2011 model year, the large utility van best known as the Ford Econoline had been a common sight in the neighbourhoods of North America.

Though traditionally possessing longer product cycles exist for commercial duty vehicles, Ford’s E-Series line last major generational chance occurred in 1992. A major redesign including a reworked exterior was incorporated in the 2008 model year E-Series but it was becoming obvious that Ford’s enthusiasm for their large van has past. Some would say the writing was on the wall for the discontinuation of the Ford E-Series.

Promoting the newest in vehicle design and technology, the modern Ford Motor Company has been on a mission to delete the remnants of their old guard. Making drastic fleet-wide changes, the most recent signal of the new Ford comes with the retirement of the Crown Victoria. After a long reign as a police interceptor and taxi, the Ford Crown Victoria’s V-8 power as well as body-on-frame construction made the car a technological dinosaur. Just entering production, the new Ford Interceptor Sedan and Utility vehicle reflect the auto brand’s utilization of modern engineering that includes the EcoBoost V-6 engine.

An import-derived design and nameplate, the Ford Transit van will be assembled inside the United States. The Transit will be produced at Ford’s Kansas City Assembly Plant. Producing the Ford Transit close to their customer base inside the United States, Ford Motor Company is also positioned on better ground when competing for some supply contracts. The United States government or certain corporations favour American construction when ordering products. The modern commercial vehicle industry has become a very hot segment in which new and existing automotive players are rapidly upgrading their offerings.

While some will decry the loss of the Econoline’s history in the North American Ford line-up, it’s interesting to note the Transit van’s actually predates the vehicle it replaces. The Transit van’s 2013 debut in the United States will come on the 60th year of Ford using the nameplate.
