So far Fisker Automotive has been exception, getting a lot farther than most independent automakers ever do.

Fisker has survived through some difficult economic times in the United States. They haven’t been without problems though – the Fisker Karma began deliveries last year when it originally was supposed to arrive in late 2009. There has also been some disappointment in the efficiency ratings it has been given by the Environmental Protection Agency. Through all that though, we’re rooting for Fisker – we want to see it succeed. A potential roadblock has come today with news about a delay in funding from the Department of Energy.

In 2009, the DOE agreed to a $529 million loan, in order to spur development of the Karma as well as the low-cost Project Nina. Out of that loan, only $193 million has been given to Fisker. That money has been earmarked for the Karma. Fisker has made up for some of the lack of funding with private equity – late last year the company led a new round of $260 million in investment, bringing the private total to $850 million. That’s some serious backing, and it is needed – Project Nina is an expensive undertaking.

Fisker has announced there is a renegotiation of the terms regarding the $336 million balance in funding. Fisker didn’t confirm why the negotiations are taking place or what terms will be changed, but they expect the funding to be delivered eventually. With the last dispersement of funds received in May of last year, work on Fisker’s Wilmington, Delaware plant has ceased. Work has been ongoing on the former General Motors factory where the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky were produced. Phase one of this project has been completed, but it is on hold until discussions with the DOE are complete. As a result of this 26 people have been laid off.

Fisker says Project Nina is “well advanced” with “much of the engineering. design and development near complete.” They expect to ramp up operations again quickly. For Fisker’s sake, hopefully the funding arrives soon. For now, production and sales of the Karma are continuing unimpeded.

Related posts:

Fisker Karma Returns 52 MPGe, 32 Miles of Electric Range

Fisker Karma Gets Another Price Hike

Detroit 2009: Production Fisker Karma is revealed, jaws begin dropping

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Fisker Karma Gets Another Price Hike

Car News

Fisker

Fisker Automotive

Fisker Karma

Karma

Being the new automaker on the block is no easy task – just ask Aptera or the many other car projects that have failed over the years. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

Being the new automaker on the block is no easy task – just ask Aptera or the many other car projects that have failed over the years. Car making is one of those entrenched businesses that doesn’t make it easy for new companies to join. If you’re going to do it, try to be very exclusive – as in under 100 cars a year. That is the conventional wisdom anyway.

Tesla and Fisker have dispelled it somewhat, although not totally as their biggest projects are yet to debut. Most of the skepticism with these companies comes down to their ability to produce a profit – it is difficult to achieve the required margins. Fisker has learned this with the Karma. It was due years ago, with a price tag of around $80,000. Then came numerous delays, and a price hike to $87,900.

A bump to $95,900 followed, and now the company is announcing another hike, to $102,000 for the base model. In case you’re counting, thats an increase of $22,000 over the original quoted price.

Does the car take more time to build than thought, or are material prices are going up? It could be that Fisker wants to increase profit margins, or a combination of all three. Eco Chic, the top-line model, checks in at $116,000. The Karma is a luxury car, after all – Fisker thinks customers probably have the extra cash. It’ll be interesting to see if it impacts sales projections though. If you put a deposit down on the Karma before the announcement, you have until January 15th to pay up.

Wait past that date and you will have to pay the price hike just like everyone else. The Karma has endured spate of bad press due to the EPA rating being lower than first thought. Boy is it still a styling stunner though. Hopefully Fisker’s low cost “Project Nina” will go off without a hitch. Meanwhile, Tesla is preparing to launch its Model S next year. If executed right (and all indications appear that it will be), expect the Model S to steal a lot of the Karma’s thunder.

Related posts:

Fisker Karma Returns 52 MPGe, 32 Miles of Electric Range

Surfs Up: Fisker Debuts Surf Shooting Brake at Frankfurt

Detroit 2009: Production Fisker Karma is revealed, jaws begin dropping

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Fisker Karma Returns 52 MPGe, 32 Miles of Electric Range

Car News

Fisker

Fisker Karma

Karma

While Tesla has been wowing the press and early buyers with the Model S Beta, Fisker has started production on its much-delayed Karma sedan. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

While Tesla has been wowing the press and early buyers with the Model S Beta, Fisker has started production on its much-delayed Karma sedan. The Karma has seen numerous delays since its introduction, as well as an increase in price. It was supposed to debut before the Volt, but you see how that worked out…..anyway, we digress. Today the company has announced an official mileage certification from the Environmental Protection Agency.

This is an important milestone because it means that Fisker can start selling vehicles. We thought Fisker delivered some before, and it turns out those aren’t actual sales, they have been referred to as demonstration vehicles. This was able to be done since in late July one was delivered to a Fisker board member. While the EPA news is an important milestone, it is also a disappointment as well.

The Karma’s certification is for just 52 MPGe. That figure is down significantly on the 100 MPGe number Fisker originally projected for the Karma. The low figure is down to the fact that the EPA’s testing netted an electric range of just 32 miles. Fisker says that it thinks customers will see better figures in real life driving.

In fact, Fisker projects that if a Karma driver has a daily commute of 40 miles on average, they would use only 9 gallons of gas per month. When the battery runs out though, the Karma’s figures take a huge hit – returning only 20 mpg from its 2.0-liter Ecotec four-cylinder. Ouch. The Chevrolet Volt fares much better in this regard.

News about the Karma’s rating will no doubt bolster critics of the Department of Energy’s $528.7 million loan to Fisker for development of the Karma and the forthcoming Project NINA. We doubt it will matter to most people buying the Karma though; they want something cool and trendy and the Karma is it. The Karma is no doubt “greener” than other sedans in its price range as well, so for some it will have a powerful allure. Fisker says production of the $97,000 sedan is ramping up and deliveries are scheduled to accelerate throughout the rest of the year.

Related posts:

Fisker Karma Gets Another Price Hike

Detroit 2009: Production Fisker Karma is revealed, jaws begin dropping

Fisker Shows Off Aluminum Space Frame

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Surfs Up: Fisker Debuts Surf Shooting Brake at Frankfurt

Car News

Fisker

Frankfurt Motor Show

Fisker Karma

Fisker Karma shooting brake

Fisker Karma Surf

Fisker Surf

Fisker surf shooting brake

Karma

Surf

Surf shooting brake

Last month, we reported on a new Fisker debut scheduled for the Frankfurt Motor Show. Sources at What Car? described it as a “mix between a sporty estate and SUV.” Crossover? Nope. Try a four-door shooting brake.

It seemed highly unlikely that Fisker had an all-new model ready to roll out so quickly; maybe a concept but not a production vehicle. Fisker has now taken the covers off the Surf, a new addition to its lineup. It is based on the Karma, but focuses on increasing luggage capacity, an area clearly lacking on the current model.

At just 7.1 cubic feet, we can see why prospective buyers were wanting more. The rakish design of the Karma isn’t the most space efficient. Add in difficulties of packaging a four-cylinder Ecotec engine, electric components and lithium ion battery; it makes for a tight squeeze.

Depending on configuration, Surf can increase luggage capacity up to 29.0 cubic feet. Surf is an interesting name; whether it will be Karma Surf or just Surf we don’t know for sure. The reason behind that name though is due to the ability to put a surf board either on top of the vehicle, or inside. Clever.

The Surf makes sense in a few different ways; an important part of Fisker’s strategy with the Karma is European sales. In Europe, wagons and hatchbacks are the dominant sellers. The Surf should increase penetration for Fisker in markets where this style of vehicle is prevalent. That the Surf was rolled out so quickly is testament to the fact that Fisker is really listening to customers and is focused on growing sales. The Surf is set to go on sale in July 2012, at a small price premium over the Karma sedan. Weight is increased by just 77 pounds over the Karma, and all fundamentals remain unchanged. Check out Fisker’s stunning photography of the Karma in our gallery below.
<a The first one was delivered late last month to Ray Lane, Fisker’s Chairman of the Board and a Silcon Valley Investor.

Production for the car is scheduled to ramp up all throughout the year, and existing orders on the books should ensure a waiting list until late next year. Fisker is progressing fast – it first began as a coach building operation, basing cars off the BMW 6-Series and Mercedes-Benz SL. That chapter of the company’s history is over.

Despite just starting production of its first real production model, it is looking forward to the future with Project Nina, and a new Karma model set to debut at next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

The report comes from British magazine What Car? and is supposedly direct from Chief Executive Officer Henrik Fisker. The vehicle debuting next month would be a “mix of a sporty estate and SUV.” Sounds like a crossover to us.

Other tidbits include an effort to expand the appeal of the Karma lineup – including a folding hardtop version, dubbed the Karma S. The company already showed a concept model of that vehicle. A new all-wheel drive model is also in the works, as well as a new two-speed transmission designed to increase efficiency over the current cars direct drive unit. Project Nina, the low cost effort, is also on track for a debut in late 2013.

The crossover being shown at Frankfurt is allegedly based on the Karma, and What Car? says it will go on sale in 2012. Given Fisker’s history of delays, that seems highly doubtful – it is more likely the car will be a concept preview, if anything. Regardless, our curiosity is piqued. it’ll be interesting to see what new Fisker model is shown next month.

Related posts:

Surfs Up: Fisker Debuts Surf Shooting Brake at Frankfurt

Fisker Karma Returns 52 MPGe, 32 Miles of Electric Range

Fisker Karma Gets Another Price Hike

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Fisker Shows Off Aluminum Space Frame

Car News

Fisker

Hybrid

Karma

In a couple days, Fisker will be displaying their advanced aluminum space frame used in their Karma plug-in hybrid sports car at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

In a couple days, Fisker will be displaying their advanced aluminum space frame used in their Karma plug-in hybrid sports car at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. Built around their Q-Drive hybrid powertrain, the space frame focuses on strength and rigidity to house the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, a lithium-ion battery pack, and a rear-mounted 403hp traction motor assembly.

A super-structural tunnel running down the car’s centerline acts as the Karma’s backbone. It not only houses the battery pack but acts as a torque tube connecting front and rear sections. For optimal strength the Karma’s space frame is joined with 79 meters of precision CMT MIG welds and 1,058 self-piercing rivets. Each technique is used independently only where necessary to ensure top quality and durability.

The less technical-minded of us are probably thinking “who the hell cares?” Well, torsional rigidity – the amount of twisting the thing does when put under stress – is very important for driving dynamics of a sports car. That’s why you always hear sports car enthusiasts drone on about a convertible not being a proper sports car. It doesn’t have the same rigidity of a coupe, which means it’s not quite as quick around a windy road, or more importantly, a track. Fisker wants us to know that the Karma has great strength in the frame while keeping the car as light and safe as possible.

Interesting fact – this information was released to the press over a week ago, but for some reason Fisker embargoed it until today, meaning if we want to stay buddy-buddy with Fisker, don’t release the info until now. Why they wouldn’t want the public to know about their space frame before now is a complete mystery to me.

Related posts:

Fisker Karma Returns 52 MPGe, 32 Miles of Electric Range

Fisker Karma Gets Another Price Hike

Surfs Up: Fisker Debuts Surf Shooting Brake at Frankfurt

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Ex-Maserati North America Chief For Sales & Marketing Heads To Fisker

Car News

Electric

Fisker

Maserati

The world of electric cars, or at least electric cars that are more than half-assed jokes, golf carts with pretensions and pipe dreams of the well meaning, just got a lot more interesting. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

The world of electric cars, or at least electric cars that are more than half-assed jokes, golf carts with pretensions and pipe dreams of the well meaning, just got a lot more interesting. For those of you that don’t follow this stuff, there’s an electric car company out there called Fisker Automotive. To a certain extent, they are to Tesla what Chevy was to Ford 100 years ago. They are serious, well funded, and aim to have the car you see pictured here, up and running as a viable, every day car for sale to the public. And to show you just how serious they are, Fisker just hired away Maserati’s chief sales and marketing “guy”.

After being head of Maserati North America for less than one year, Marti Eulberg is now vice president of global sales and marketing for Fisker. This dovetails with Fisker’s stated goal of making not just viable, every day electric cars, but luxury electric cars. Eulberg’s will “develop global sales and marketing strategies and manage Fisker’s worldwide retail network.” And just in case you’re wondering, that would be Mizz Eulberg, Marti is not a Finnish guy. She’s got auto industry bona fides falling out of her briefcase, having also worked for Jaguar, Volvo and BMW as well as managing Ford dealerships and interning at General Motors.

Fisker, as is their want, is charting a course quite distinct from its competitor, Tesla. For one thing, Fisker have been stressing the word luxury since day one, and letting the sporting nature of their cars come second. They seem to be aiming their car for eco-conscious well-to-dos, where as Tesla have taken initial aim at people like you and me: Gearheads that want an electric car that hauls ass.

And unlike Tesla, Fisker is not following Tesla down the independent store path. Fisker will license independent dealerships, and will benefit from their expertise with selling expensive vehicles in a given local market.

Is this a better approach, from a sales and marketing perspective? There’s a lot to be said for Tesla, which is sort of taking the Apple store route with their boutique dealerships. Having one of them open in your town is something of an event. On the downside, there it sits, all by its lonesome. And there, sitting over in a corner of the XXX luxury brand showroom, will be a Fisker one day (if all goes according to plan).

So will that work? Will it drive customers to Fisker, or will it end up being like the time DeTomaso tried to sell Panteras in Ford dealerships in places like Kansas City?

Source: AutoBlogGreen

Photo from Flickr user Mike Babcock

Related posts:

Fisker Karma Gets Another Price Hike

Fisker Karma Returns 52 MPGe, 32 Miles of Electric Range

Fiat 500 Marketing Mess: Chrysler Looks To Fix, Sales Actually Look Pretty Good

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

2009 Detroit Wrap-Up: 10 Best of Show

Audi

Cadillac

Car News

Chrysler

Concept Cars

Detroit Auto Show

Electric

Fisker

Ford

Honda

Hybrid

Lincoln

McLaren

Mercedes-Benz

Toyota

VW

The Detroit auto show has come and gone, and has left the automotive industry with a little more to chew over. We chose based on significance and looks, which is why you will see Honda’s Insight on the same list as the Fisker Karma. After much deliberating, here are the 10 we think are the best.

10) Volkwagen BlueSport Concept

Starting at the No. 10 spot, the BlueSport made this list because it is an honest effort to make a sporty car by a company whose most engaging vehicle to date is the Golf GT1 (no, the Bugatti Veyron does not count). It’s not the sexiest roadster available, as the Saturn Sky debatably holds that spot (key word: debatably. Check out the comments at the link above, and add your own opinion). While not terribly exciting to the eyes, it does feature that solid, reliable look that has come to define VW’s “German Engineering”. 57 miles to each gallon of diesel just adds to the charm.

9) Lincoln MKT

The Lincoln MKT is the production version of the concept shown at last year’s Detroit show, and as expected, the production version is toned down, meaning that it’s not nearly as sexy. That doesn’t mean the 2010 MKT is bad though. To the contrary, the MKT is visually interesting and shows that Ford is committed to its flagship brand.

 Honda Insight

Watch out Prius: Honda is gunning for the hybrid top spot in their own halo enviro-car. It’s smaller than yours, cheaper than yours, and hey! it even looks like yours. But don’t worry Toyota, it only gets an EPA estimated 40 city/43 highway, while your revised eco baby can boast 50 mpg combined. Jokes aside, though, Toyota had better sweat all the details on the new Prius, because from what we’ve heard, the Insight is more spacious, comfortable, dynamic, and insightful (heh heh, see what we did there?)

7) Audi Sportback Concept

Audi is known for their good, clean design, and while the Sportback Concept isn’t very exciting, it is a reassuringly familiar vehicle. Previewing the design of the new A7, this “five-door hatchback” is another spin off the “four-door coupe” idea, probably designed to combat the phenomenal sales success of the Mercedes CLS. Due to its clean turbodiesel V-6, the car can get 37 miles to the gallon, while hitting 60 mph in less than 7 seconds. Not bad. But what we really wanna see is the beastly V-10 used in the S8, though Audi says that a supercharged V-6 is a more likely option.

6) Chrysler 200C Concept

We here at Automoblog.net have been worried about Chrysler. Always the most anemic of the Big Three, recent economic turmoils have hit them the hardest. Rumors of bankruptcy have often surfaced, followed by their shameless begging from the governments. Here to show us that they might have a bright future is the 200C, a hybrid from Chrysler that actually makes sense and could feasibly make a difference. The car is a standard plug-in hybrid, with a small gasoline engine supplementing an electric drivetrain. The 200C can travel up to 40 miles on an electric charge alone (oooh, doesn’t that sound familiar), and is about the size of a 5-Series Bimmer. The interior is astonishingly high-tech and futuristic, which hopefully hints at the future of Chrysler interior design and ergonomics. Overall, the car is gorgeous, and we can only hope that it will get the green light for production.

5) Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss

If we were not so accustomed to the “normal” SLR, then the Stirling Moss would have made numero uno on our list. But since it’s really no more than a resculpted SLR, we couldn’t score it too high. But what a resculpting! Looking far more exotic and expensive and unattainable than the original, this was no doubt the coolest supercar on display. Power comes from the same 650 horsepower supercharged V-8 in the Roadster, and this baby can blast to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds, and it won’t stop till it hits 217 mph. And you’ll be feeling it the whole way: if you haven’t noticed yet, the Stirling has no windshield, and no roof.

4) 2010 Toyota Prius

Placing the Prius above the awesome Stirling Moss may seem like we’ve lost our marbles, but we haven’t. True, the Prius is no cooler than a box of tumbleweed compared to the Stirling, but it is far more significant to this industry. Exterior changes are minor, the most interesting being a new moonroof with solar panels that power a fan to cool the car while parked. The cabin has been redesigned, with more intuitive controls. The biggest news, however, is better fuel economy. 50 mpg combined ain’t shabby at all, but it could be doing a lot better. The absence of the promised plug-in feature is disappointing, but no matter. We are confident that this new Prius can hold its own and remain the definition of the word “hybrid”.

Update: 2010 Toyota Prius Review

3) Ford Taurus

Quite possibly the most important product launch in Ford’s illustrious history, the Taurus could very feasibly re-empower Ford. Far removed from the previous Taurus that had us all yawning, this new baby is impressive. Clear effort was made at design and quality, as the whole car gives off a very upscale feeling. Quieter and more refined, overall fit and finish set a new standard for the Ford Motor Company. With a cockpit inspired by the ’10 Mustang the Taurus imparts a sporty feel as well. “Family sedan” will be the last description to come to your mind, if it comes at all, yet the Taurus excels at it’s practical application as a family car. The Taurus will be available 2010 with a 3.5 liter V-6, and a performance SHO version will follow in 2010.

2) Fisker Karma Sedan/ Karma S Concept

The Fisker Karma and Karma S Concept are the second best cars of the Detroit Auto Show because they are sex on wheels. That is the only way to succintly sum it up. The Karma S Concept is even sexier than the production Karma sedan, due to its two-door convertible nature and the fact that concepts aren’t hampered by such things like real life practicality. Both are luxury hybrids that offer respectable performance numbers and excellent mileage, all in a package that is the most environmentally friendly that we’ve seen. If the only car to edge it out for the title of Best of Show wasn’t so damn cool, then the Karma would have had an easy win.

1) Cadillac Converj Concept

Here it is, our pick for the Best of the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. Cadillac’s version of the Volt is gorgeous, exotic, and so desirable it makes me wonder how the brand ever fell behind foreign competitors. In what is probably the best rendition of Cadillac’s “Art & Science” slogan, the Converj hints at the future of Cadillac design and engineering, and boy, is that future lookin’ good. Do the folks on Capitol Hill still think that Detroit produces nothing but crude, obese gas guzzlers? Since it shares the same basic drivetrain as the Volt, this angular sex-bomb can travel 40 miles without using a single drop of gas, with a small gasoline engine to prevent what Bob Lutz has termed “range anxiety”. It can be recharged from a home outlet. If we were running GM, this baby would be starting production tomorrow, but since we’re not, the future of this car is uncertain. We sure do hope that the Converj doesn’t follow in the footsteps of such concepts as the Cien and Sixteen, that is, marvels of design that unfortunately remain just a design.

Related posts:

New Car Debuts Awaiting at 2012 Detroit Auto Show

Detroit 2009: Production Fisker Karma is revealed, jaws begin dropping

9th Generation Honda Civic Debuting at Detroit Auto Show

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Detroit 2009: Production Fisker Karma is revealed, jaws begin dropping

Car News

Detroit Auto Show

Fisker

Hybrid

Now who says hybrids have to be boring? src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

Now who says hybrids have to be boring?

The hybrid in question, the production version of the Fisker Karma, was revealed in Detroit a few days ago, and man, we like it. A lot.

Let’s forget about the engine, mileage, and similar rubbish and just focus on the car. Observe that wide stance, those sculpted fenders. Drink in the flowing lines, the 22 inch wheels, the oooh-ness of it all. Is that not the sexiest thing you have ever seen? Is that not gorgeous? Like, dare we say it, Aston Martin gorgeous? Or maybe even, and we can’t believe we’re saying this, better looking than an Aston Martin (after all, Henrik Fisker, CEO of Fisker Automotive, designed the DB9)? This article is becoming rather difficult to write because my jaw keeps hitting the keys. It’s just an impossibly pretty car.

Says Big Boss Man Henrik Fisker himself “Extreme proportions, beautiful sculpture and earth-friendly materials are key elements that set the Karma apart”. He also states that their “hope is that the Fisker Karma will create a new segment of eco-friendly transportation and will become the most desirable plug-in hybrid sports sedan available”.

So rip your gaze away from the photos, if you would, and focus on several key points that are emphasized over and over in the press release; namely environmental friendliness.

First of all, the Karma has a powertrain that is contrary to anything developed so far. Dubbed “Q Drive”, it was originally designed for the Army’s Delta Force by Quantum Technologies (how it got into Fisker’s hands is beyond us). The usual hybrid systems, like the ones used by Toyota, utilize a standard internal combustion engine for primary power, which is then augmented by electric motors.

In the Karma’s case, electricity is the main power source. The Q Drive system is composed of two 201 horsepower electric motors, powered by a lithium-ion battery pack, and a 260 horse turbocharged Ecotec gasoline engine supplied by GM that provides additional power and range. Now since electric motors generate tons of torque at a flat torque curve, the pound-feet generated are usually rather high. In the case of the Karma, they are beastly: 959 pound-feet.

<del datetime="2009-01-22T03:36:24+00:00">Hold on a sec and add up those numbers: 201 from each motor + 260 from Ecotec equals a whopping 660! And that’s in a plug-in hybrid. </del>(I stand corrected. Since the Ecotec engine is not hooked up to the drivetrain, the horsepower numbers are solely the sum of the pair of electric motors. Still, 402 horses ain’t nothing to scoff at.)

The system has two features: Stealth Mode and Sport Mode. Stealth Mode is entirely electric, and in this mode the Karma can travel up to 50 miles on a single charge (did we mention that this supersexysleek car is also a plug-in? ooooh, this just keeps gettin’ better). In Sport Mode the Ecotec kicks in, and boosts range to 300 miles. Beyond that, the car runs solely on gas. The estimated annual average mileage for a fully charged Karma is more than 100 mpg.

100 miles per gallon! Karma owners can start laughing at the Prius now; even the new Prius only gets 50! This is freakin’ awesome! But wait, it gets even better.

While Fisker wants the eco-friendly aspect of the car to be its leading pennant, the company doesn’t want to overshadow the car’s performance either. After all, it is advertised as “the world’s first true premium plug-in hybrid sports sedan”. Top speed is over 125 mph, just like the Tesla Roadster, and this beauty can hit 60 mph in just 5.8 seconds. That’s faster than a Porsche Boxster (but then again, so is the Hyundai Genesis, the Honda Accord, the Chevy Malibu….).

Luxury is a big part of the whole package as well, and the Karma does not disappoint. The cabin is an overall classy place to be, with controls ergonomically placed and gauges clearly positioned. This is kinda cool: each passenger gets their own individual seat, even the ones in the back.

Again, the environmental focus affects everything, from the wood trim that is only taken from non-living trees, to the top o’ the line EcoChic trim level, which replaces all leather with bamboo viscose. We think this is an interesting touch: the EcoChic trim also comes with genuine fossilized leaves framed in EcoGlass.

As a final reach out to Mother Nature, the roof is glass and is covered in solar panels— an industry first. No, solar energy won’t power the car, it will simply perform tasks that require mundane amounts of electricity, like starting the car and running the A/C when the car is parked in the sun. The latter is one of those “duh” features that for some reason no one has thought of yet.

We love the Karma for two things: it’s design and ingenuity. Quite possibly the most environmentally friendly car out there, it is astonishingly creative, in both design and real-life application. Of course, all things come at a price, which in the Karma’s case is…..

Not much at all. Sure, the $87,900 base listing ($80,400 after tax credits) isn’t cheap, but when you think about it, it’s not expensive either. We weren’t quite sure what to expect, but somewhere in the $150,000 range wouldn’t have surprised us. 80K sounds entirely reasonable, especially when compared to other cars in its price bracket: stuff like the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series, Mercedes S-Class, and Lexus LS460. They don’t even come close in terms of sheer sex appeal. The Karma is one of the best looking cars we have seen in a long time, and certainly one of the best to come out of the Detroit Auto Show.

Specs

Price: $87, 900

Engine: Pair of electric motors, and 2.0 liter inline-4

Top Speed: a little beyond 125 mph

Horsepower: 402

Torque: 959 lb-ft

0-60 mph: 5.8 seconds

Mileage: 50 mile range in Stealth, 300 in Sport, annual average 100 mpg.

<img id="image2869"alt=fisker-karma-back-1.jpg src="http://cdn.automoblog.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/fisker-karma-back-1.jpg" />

Source: Autoblog, NAIAS, and Carscoop

Related posts:

Fisker Karma Returns 52 MPGe, 32 Miles of Electric Range

Fisker Karma Gets Another Price Hike

Fisker Shows Off Aluminum Space Frame

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Artega GT – Geneva Auto Show

Artega

Concept Cars

Fisker

Gallery

I certainly wouldn’t call this a most original design, but it sure is beautiful. Henrik Fiskers newest design called the Artega GT features design notes from a few different cars I can think of off the top of my head. Porsche, Lotus Elise, Ferrari 360/F430, Tesla, and possibly more. But apparently there isn’t a better batch of cars to combine designs. Take a look at this beauty:

<script type="text/javascript"
