Ten Coolest Cop Cars – Coolest Police Cruisers Can Make Crooks Envious

Depending on their desire for freedom, criminals have had a penchant to elude the police and in many instances have vehicles that give the local police a run for their money. However, in some countries, the police have some of the coolest police cruisers that can make many criminals exceptionally envious. However, not all of the vehicles are able to be used on most streets but they do have the capability to chase down crooks in some of the fastest pursuits possible.

Do Insurance Companies Believe You’re Driving a Risky Vehicle?

In most places within North America, auto insurance represents one of the most costly ongoing expenses attached to automotive ownership. A monthly or annual cost that varies wildly between driver, we barely understand the number of factors affecting our individual insurance rate. Driver’s age, gender and history behind the wheel plays the key part in establishing what we need to pay in order to venture on roadways legally.

Besides the human factor, your chosen automobile also weighs on the determination for the insurance premium amount. While the calculations of auto insurance quotes differ between companies and policies, a car-insurance.com chart cited that the vehicle accounts for thirteen percent of a driver’s rate. While the Cobalt’s appearance on the list could also be cited for sizeable production numbers, the compact Chevrolet joins six of the top-ten highest loss vehicles targeted for the youth market.

On the other side of the insurance data, some of the lowest loss vehicles Subaru Outback wagon, Honda CR-V and the Ford F-150. While the presence a two-door sport compact car at the top of the IIHS list of highest insurance losses is not a surprise, two popular sports cars make an amusing stand on the lowest insurance loss chart. The Chevrolet Corvette and the Mazda MX-5 Miata present lower than average insurance loss data. Topping the list on the lowest insurance loss chart is the Smart ForTwo. From the collection of automobile types assembled on the lowest insurance loss list, it could be assumed sport cars like the Corvette and MX-5 Miata are driven with more care.

When identifying individual vehicles, the insurance loss data displays some interesting observations among vehicle categories. While the insurance loss numbers constructed by the IIHS and the HLDI reveals that many mid-sized sedans are less risky than smaller vehicles, there are several exceptions. For example, the Smart ForTwo, MINI Cooper Clubman and Volkswagen New Beetle all overcome the small car stigma to have lower insurance loss numbers. Perhaps reinforcing the sense many American automobile buyers maintained over the last decade, sport utility and crossover vehicles were rated favourably for insurance loss. Every SUV and crossover vehicle built from 2008 to 2010 model year achieved either average or under the auto insurance industry’s average for loss.

2011 US Auto Sales: Good but Far from Full Recovery

As expected early this 2012 year, automakers posted some very optimistic sales numbers for the United States marketplace for 2011. A place where consumers still love their cars, 2011 provided an excellent year for North American car fans. No other time in the North American auto industry has motorists been able to explore so much freedom and choice.

In only three years, the American auto industry has turned from forecasted shambles to a rosier, settled environment. Hitting Chrysler and General Motors in the most severe manner, no major auto company was truly immune to the economic troubles started in late 2008. Similar to reaction from the global banking and financial sector, it wasn’t until a key period where the public truly understood until bankruptcy papers were being filed.

The combination of troubled business models and customers losing access to money or car loans needed for purchases led to a disappointing start of the 2009 calendar year. Between seven major automakers selling vehicles in the United States (GM, Ford, Chrysler, Nissan, Honda, Toyota and Hyundai/Kia), auto sales amounted to 9,124,380 cars in all of 2009 (5,145,746 units lower than just two years prior). It was only through a United States government sponsored new car purchase program that the tides began to reverse. Known as “Cash for Clunkers,” motorists were able to trade in an old vehicle for a guaranteed trade-in credit.

After the 12 months of 2011, the same seven automakers have steadily performed better than the disastrous 2009 auto sales year. When the 2011 year ended, 10,987,403 were sold by the seven high volume automakers in the United States. Up 20.4 percent from 2009, the 2011 results continued the gains made after 2010 as some elements of the economy recuperated. Recognizing there is so many reasons to celebrate the improvement of the North American motor vehicle industry, the recent auto sale numbers indicating positive momentum from dismal 2009 figures have shown that the current car business is far from past glory.

The Detroit Three

For automakers Chrysler, Ford and General Motors, six years have seen once-proclaimed Big Three transform into the more modest moniker Detroit Three. In 2005, General Motors led United States car sales handsomely with 4,454,385 vehicles. Thanks to declining sales due to a changing economy and the doom of bankruptcy, 2009 vehicle sales dropped 53.2 percent for GM at just 2,084,492 units. Recovering with auto sales reaching 2,503,820 vehicles after 2011, the improvement comes with the loss of brands Pontiac and Hummer as well as the offloading of the now troubled Saab. The major source for General Motors’ traction in the United States automotive marketplace remains the Chevrolet division with 1,775,812 products sold last year. In 2011, the Chevrolet Cruze accounted for 231,732 of Chevrolet’s sales becoming a star for the auto industry.

Chrysler will be relying on vehicles like the 2013 Dodge Dart to entice consumers while also attempting to lure commercial vehicle contracts with the Ram brand that should include at least one new work van in the near future.

While Ford Motor Company escaped the need for government assistance, the past six years has taken the Blue Oval car company on a wild ride. Selling 3,168,156 vehicles in 2005, Ford Motor Company posted 2,148,806 in 2011 sales. As Ford devoted their business back to cars, truck sales have taken a sizable hit. Despite a reduction in truck sales, the Ford F-150 and Ford Escape remain the top-selling vehicles by the carmaker in 2011. Losing Mercury and still struggling to bring Lincoln back to the luxury car forefront challenges Ford’s total recovery. A reborn Ford brand line-up that includes the 2013 Taurus and Fusion sedans plus the 2013 Escape crossover are future vanguards for healthy auto sales.

Some people (even the same ones who originally wished the US government to protect financial institutions with taxpayer dollars) wanted to allow General Motors and Chrysler to succumb to liquidation. Led first by former president George W Bush’s administration with emergency financial aid and later by Barack Obama’s White House directing the needed loans through GM and Chrysler’s bankruptcy, both car companies survived. Wanting to be relieved of the public taunting of phrases such as “Government Motors”, GM and Chrysler paid back the emergency assistance late in 2011. Regardless of political leaning or perhaps free of such constraints, government intervention of the two American auto companies stabilized what could have been a much harsher industry-wide events. What if many more autoworkers would be out of the job? What if the 100th year of Chevrolet had been marred with a giant production blackout continuing to this day? Those and other questions can be answered hypothetically.

US Auto Market for Import Brands

While the mighty Detroit Three restructured their business model, many would believe the Japanese automakers Honda and Toyota have finally entered prime position to eat drastically eat away at the market. However, just like the American based companies, the Japanese carmakers have been suffering similar sales slippage from 2005 levels. Toyota Motor Corporation 2011 auto sales of 1,644,661 units is 27 percent lower than the 2005 year (Toyota fell just short of Chrysler with yearlong sales in 2005). Honda’s United States auto sales have also been noticeably lower at 21.5 percent over 2005 numbers. Third place in US sales among the Japanese carmakers is Nissan. Suffering a drop of about 230,000 vehicles from 2005 to 2009, Nissan pulled an enviable achievement recovering all but around 34,000 units in US sales delivering 1,042,534 vehicles to customers during 2011.

Bucking the trend of the economic hardships felt by leading auto companies was the South Korea’s Hyundai/Kia. In 2009, Hyundai/Kia actually posted a modest growth. Still emerging as a trustworthy company in the United States in 2005, the South Korean entity of Hyundai Motor America and sister group Kia Motors were able to benefit from a slimmer market profile. Kia and Hyundai brands have steadily sailed forward in American auto sales that totalled 1,131,183 vehicles after the 2011 calendar year. Increasing annual sales by 400,000 cars and crossover vehicles 2005 through 2011, records a sensational 54.77 percent increase in sales.

The US Auto Sales Recovery to Date

Despite successes and disappointments, the results of these seven top auto companies (totalling 10,987,403 units in 2011) shows that recovery is not yet a full recuperation to previous years. The point of observing this six-year span of sales numbers in the United States paints a picture of a different time in the auto industry on a continent. From the buzz at the upcoming auto shows, with all the uncertainty that recalls, the latest in advanced propulsion technology, the lessons of the past pushes a stride to former glory or even to a greater future.

Chevrolet Corvette 427 Collector Edition, Anniversary Package Commemorate 60 Year Run

The 2013 model year marks 60 years of Chevrolet Corvette production. It also marks 60 years of Corvette production. 60 years of an icon can’t go unrecognized, and Chevy isn’t letting it. To commemorate the occasion, Chevy has announced a new 427 Collector Edition as well as a 60th Anniversary package available across the lineup.

The Corvette has been no stranger to option packages and special editions over the years. The 427 Collector has Z06 power without the badge, and therefore is the fastest, as the the Z06 and ZR1 aren’t available in convertible form. These cars also mark a sendoff of sorts for the sixth-generation C6. A new C7 is on its way for the 2014 model year, and no it isn’t going to do anything radical like switch to a mid-engined layout.

Visually, the 427 Collector Edition is differentiated by darkened headlights, exclusive 19-inch wheels up front and 20-inchers out back, along with a carbon fiber raised hood and fenders. The 427 Collector Edition is powered by – what else – the 427 cubic inch V-8 from the Z06. It makes 505 horsepower and 470 pound feet of torque, mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Chevrolet says that makes it the most capable series production Corvette drop top ever. Underneath the skin are components from the Z06, including its driveline, rear suspension and Magnetic Ride Control system. 0-60 arrives in 3.8 seconds, and quarter mile in 11.8. Top speed exceeds 190 mph.

The 60th Anniversary package includes – let me guess – special badging. “60″ badging adorns the interior steering wheel and seats, as well as the exterior wheel caps. Further setting the Anniversary cars apart is an Arctic White exterior paired with grey brake calipers, and interior suede and leather accents in Blue Diamond.

Optional is a graphics package that we think is a must for spicing up the Corvette’s exterior looks. The 427 Convertible is scheduled to debut at the famous Barrett Jackson auto auction on January 21st, with deliveries beginning this summer.

GM Offers Remedy to Chevrolet Volt Post-Crash Fire Threat

As one of the most important auto shows of the year takes place in Detroit, the need for brands to create a meaningful impression on the forward-thinking automotive market is paramount. For at least one company, their work in acquainting customers to once advanced producted started a week earlier. Prior to showcasing this year’s automotive innovations, General Motors brand Chevrolet had issued an important remedy the 2011 North American International Auto Show‘s Car of the Year, the Chevrolet Volt.

Currently the only plug-in hybrid vehicle in the United States marketplace, the Chevrolet Volt was put under investigation last year by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in regards to a battery fire risk. Originating from a fire at the vehicle holding area of the NHTSA, the cause was linked to a Chevrolet Volt that was administered a side-impact pole test weeks before. It was assessed that a coolant link caused by a broken line led to the overheating and sparking o lithium-ion battery pack. In November of 2011, the NHTSA announced they had recreated the fire under lab conditions using the identical perimeters that caused the June fire.

Just in time to save General Motors’ corporate assembly in Detroit some headaches of having to answer repeated questions on the Chevrolet Volt’s post-crash fire risk, the company’s engineering team provided a multi-prong fix for the car. The first solution is to construct a more comprehensive structural assembly around the Volt’s battery pack. Second and third modifications strengthening the Volt plug-in hybrid focuses on the battery’s cooling system. A new sensor will be added to the battery cooling supply to monitor fluid levels. Finally, a temper-resistant bracket is added to the battery coolant reservoir of the Chevrolet Volt protecting against the potential of coolant fluid overfill.

Quick to resolve the problem, the new modifications to Volt’s electrical powertrain hardware has already been tested. Four Chevrolet Volts featuring the enhanced crash protection were crash tested through the month of December. With no coolant leak or fires erupting from the collision aftermath, General Motors is confident they have successfully resolved the issue.

Chevrolet Volt owners will be notified individually about the new safety enhancements available for their vehicle in the coming weeks. Since late November, Volt owners were offered use of a ‘loaner’ car if they felt unsafe driving their plug-in hybrid.

In 2007, General Motors shocked automotive journalists and enthusiasts with a perspective of plug-in hybrid driving through debut of the Chevrolet Volt Concept at the North American International Auto Show. Shortly after the conceptual design made headlines in many publications of that time, a production version of the Chevrolet Volt becoming the world’s first plug-in electric/gasoline plug-in hybrid from a major automaker. Spending what seemed to be an eternity on the car show circuit, the Chevrolet Volt’s debut came with the accolades including the 2011 Car of the Year at the North American International Auto Show.

Enduring the Chevrolet Volt’s first challenge as the vehicle launches into wide release throughout the United States and Canada this year, the fire concern has much to do about the continuing learning process behind advanced powertrains entering production cars. As new players like the 2013 Ford Fusion Energi and the Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid approaches the marketplace in the next 12 months, the Volt will count on its head-start from the showroom as an advantage.

Chevrolet Code 130R and Tru 140S Concepts Debut, Target Youth Market

This year’s North American International Auto Show is in full swing, and it is one of the best auto shows we’ve seen in a long time. So many debuts are going on, pivotal new vehicles for their manufacturers. And you know what else?

There has been very few leaks ahead of time – making it even more exciting. This morning Chevrolet has debuted two new concepts aimed squarely at the youth market. They are the Code 130R and Tru 140S, each aimed at offering enthusiasts an small, engaging performance offering. They are designed to compete with cars like the new Scion FR-S and each has an entirely different approaches in doing that. We’ll start with the 130R.

The 130R is a rear-wheel drive offering, which makes us excited. It is powered by a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder working in concert with an eAssist mild hybrid system. The setup makes 150 horsepower and 148 pound feet of torque. Given its weight, that wouldn’t provide bad performance. Stylistically, the 130R has retro proportions, with an upright design and aggressive front end.

It somehow manages to be a bit throwback. Anyhow, we love it – and more than the styling, just the concept and confidence behind it. Underneath the car could be a mainstream version of the Alpha platform that underpins the Cadillac ATS – General Motors isn’t saying anything about that though. Inexpensive, rear-wheel drive and fun – we like the sounds of that!

The 140S is very modern in its styling, with a low-slung, cab forward design that is somewhat like the most recent Mitsubishi Eclipse. Better though, definitely better. The 140S has muscular lines, and elongated doors.

It is very dramatic, and the 140S seems to be the styling favorite of the two concepts. Funnily enough, underneath the 140S is based on the Delta platform underpinning the Cruze. This is the Cruze coupe everyone has been wanting – and its a whole lot better than Cruze sans two-doors. We’re glad to see Chevrolet making an effort, and we could really see this car doing well if it is produced.

Remember what we said about same targets, different approaches? Well the 140S has the same engine setup, making 10 more hp. In addition, it would be priced at the same point – about $25,000 – if produced.

We think they need to pull the trigger with both of them, but if one is more likely to get the green light it would have to be the 140S. No doubt about it, Chevy is back folks. These concepts are proof the brand is reaching out to enthusiasts and the youth market with new models. Green light! Check them both out in our gallery below and decide which one is your favorite.

First-Year Cars that Rocked 2011

Enduring the ride that was the 2011 year for better or worse, we have now arrived in the new year of 2012. For the auto industry, 2011 has taken some auto companies on differing paths. For companies like Ford Motor Company, Hyundai and General Motors, their year ends with a series of successes leading to certain profitability at the end of 2011. Other automakers have gone into 2011 expecting a new beginning only to face what could be an ending. Swedish’s car company Saab could have a short-lived life beyond General Motors unless a solid financial rescuer comes to its aid. As automakers think shortly back to the 2011 year, seeking for top spot in the 2012 automobile market, some vehicles reflect clear winners for attracting the interests of rightfully demanding consumers.

While not necessarily dominating sales charts, the following new vehicles captured the mood of 2011 in automotive design and innovations:

Hyundai Veloster

Infusing their line-up with character, Hyundai first sought to attract an upscale clientele. Sculpting a reinvented brand perception with the Veracruz, Genesis and Equus, Hyundai’s focus on product development has worked from the top down. As the Hyundai Accent received a much-overdue redesign for the 2012 model year, observers noted the absence of the three-door hatchback version. Planning something sportier and unique, the Veloster came to life at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show projecting some deep personality from Hyundai.

Powered by a spunky 138-horsepower from a 1.6 liter Gamma powerplant, the Hyundai Veloster delivers pep along with excellent fuel economy of 32 miles per gallon in combined city and highway driving. Drivers could choose from an innovative 6-speed dual-clutch transmission or the more pleasuring 6-speed manual gearbox. Standard equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, a 7-inch LG touch screen stereo system with Pandora and Bluetooth connectivity meant the 2012 Hyundai Veloster had the ingredients to be an instant hot item at a $17,300 starting price. Officially launched in October, the 2012 Hyundai Veloster accumulated 7,096 in sales by the end of November.

For sale during only the final quarter of 2011, the Veloster has already received the attention of a young crowd looking for what hidden talent rests in the radical three-door vehicle. At the 2011 SEMA Show, several examples for modded out PM Lifestyle/UTI Veloster elevated Hyundai to a flashier world stage. A turbocharged production version of the three-door Hyundai Veloster in the near future should only allow the car to continue its quest to become a recognized pocket rocket from 2012 and beyond.

Lamborghini Aventador

Chevrolet Enters New Markets, Breaks Records In 2011

Last year, a Chevrolet was sold around the world every 7.4 seconds. This year, that number down to one every 6.6 seconds. Pretty amazing when you think about it. For most of its 100-year history, Chevrolet has been an American-centric brand. A good majority of its sales have always been racked up here in the United States. Historically, GM has relied on local brands like Opel in in international markets.

In recent years General Motors has made a concerted effort to turn Chevy into a global brand. For instance just last year Chevy entered new markets like South Korea and Vietnam. Their efforts appear to be paying off. For 2011, Chevy is looking to set an all-time sales record, selling 4.8 million units through November.

60% percent of those sales are from outside the U.S, with markets like China, Russia and India playing a huge role, as well as Latin American countries. Chevrolet is the number one brand in Latin America with a market share of 18.7 percent. In comparison, Chevy has 13.7% market share in the U.S. Globally, Chevy sales are up a half a point in marketshare. In the U.S, passenger car sales are up by 34% thanks to strong performances from the Cruze and Malibu, which at the end of its life-cycle. The new Sonic launched a few months ago, and according to The Detroit Bureau, dealers are having the car on their lot for an average of just 17 days.

Who says small cars can’t sell? Who says General Motors can’t sell competitive small cars? Not many people are saying either anymore. The Chevrolet Cruze is one of the best-selling compacts in the United States, and deservedly so. The Sonic slots in below it, to replace the Aveo. With both cars, GM is looking to continue market share gains into the next year. Next year, the 2013 Malibu should be a further sales booster, as it competes in the hotly-contested mid-size sedan market. With 2011 marking its 100-year anniversary, the Chevy brand looks like it is in better shape than ever.

2013 Chevy Sonic RS Erupting for Detroit Premiere

From the 1980s through to the latter half of the 2000s, American automakers reluctantly participated in the small car market. Poor build quality, lack of reliability and overall unattractiveness tainted not only the reputation in the small car category but potential first-time car buyers. When Chevrolet committed to replace the Korean-built Aveo with the 2012 Sonic, the bowtie brand immediately asserted the new small vehicle would be an enthusiastic entry.

When the 2010 Paris Motor Show presented the global car media the first conceptual look of the Chevrolet Sonic subcompact, the intent was to condense the performance feeling of the Camaro or Corvette in a smaller package. To sell the sportier ambitions for Chevrolet, the exhibition car was named the Aveo RS Concept. To be presented at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the 2013 Sonic production car will dazzle with ‘RS’ badging in thrilling performance style.

Infused with a similar vibe as the 2011 SEMA Show cars, the Chevrolet Sonic RS is the awaited model observers expected to add some aggression to the subcompact. Offered both as a four-door sedan and five-door hatchback body style, the upcoming Chevrolet Sonic RS trim level ups the youthful appearance ante. The 2013 Sonic RS wears unique bodywork that includes special front and rear fascia as well as side rocker panel moldings. On the front, the 2013 Chevy Sonic RS subcompact’s dynamic-looking fog lamps fixtures shine the roadways. A new exterior colour being introduced for the 2013 Sonic RS (along with other Sonic models) is Black Granite Metallic. For the 2012 model year premiere of the Sonic, the only transmission mated with the 1.4 liter turbocharged engine was a 6-speed manual.

With the RS model, the 2013 Chevrolet Sonic reinforces the performance-oriented exterior with a functional but racy cabin. A thicker steering wheel featuring a flat-bottom appearance, aluminum foot pedals and specific graphics on the Sonic’s motorcycle-inspired instrument cluster will be some initial elements defining the RS model. RS-badged sport seating is found for the driver and front passenger who are within reach of standard MyLink infotainment technology. A seven-inch touch screen guides Chevrolet’s new integrated navigation and entertainment system inside the 2013 Sonic RS. Featuring Bluetooth connectivity, smart phones can transmit navigational information and can even allow pictures as well as video to be viewable when the Chevy Sonic RS is at rest. Pandora and Stitcher Internet radio services can also be accessed through the Sonic RS’ MyLink system delivering music selections with cutting-edge technology.

2012 Chevrolet Sonic Review

The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic is the much needed replacement for the Aveo, a car universally panned by the automotive media, and is built in Orion Township, Michigan. The Sonic comes in two forms, a five-door hatchback and a four-door sedan with the usual Chevy flavors of LS, LT, and LTZ. Pricing starts at $13,735 for the sedan and $14,635 for the hatchback with standard alloy wheels ranging in size from 15 to 17 inches, air conditioning, front floor mats, ten airbags, stability and traction control, OnStar, anti-lock brakes, remote keyless entry, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, and stereo with aux input. The base engine is a 138HP 1.8L that when mated with the five-speed manual gets 26 mpg in the city while the six-speed automatic gets 25 mpg. Both transmissions are rated at 35 mpg on the highway. The upgraded engine is a 138HP 1.4L turbo available only with a six-speed manual that gets 29 city and 40 highway.

All manufacturers have increased the exterior appeal of their subcompact offerings and the Sonic is no exception. The car has an aggressive forward-leaning stance with the wheels pushed out to the corners. On the inside the interior space, especially upfront, is decent and the sedan’s trunk is surprisingly huge for a car this size. I wasn’t sure how I would feel about the funky motorcycle-inspired gauges, but I actually liked them and the multi-function trip computer next to the giant tachometer was a useful surprise. Like its larger sibling, the Malibu, the Sonic has a two-tone dash that gives it a high-quality appearance uncharacteristic of cars in this class. Rear seat room is the same in both hatch and sedan and is most comfortable for short trips if you are near six feet.

My first tester was the LT Sedan. The LT model adds a CD Player with MP3 playback, SiriusXM, two additional speakers, rear floor mats, power windows, and power heated side mirrors to the base equipment listed above. My test car also had the optional Connectivity Plus Cruise package that added Bluetooth and a USB port to the stereo, cruise control and steering wheel mounted phone and audio controls, and the Wheel and Fog Lamp package that added 16 inch aluminum wheels and fog lamps. My car also had Inferno Orange Metallic paint that was an extra $195. The sticker including delivery came to $16,560.

I also drove an LTZ model that adds as standard equipment Bluetooth and USB port for the stereo, cruise control, perforated leatherette seating with heaters for the front, leather-wrapped steering wheel with phone, audio and cruise controls, and fog lamps. Options on the car were a power sunroof ($850) and Crystal Red Metallic Paint ($325) with a total sticker price of $19,730. I thought the leatherette looked and felt low-quality for the nearly $20,000 price tag, but perhaps I expect too much.

Both cars I drove had the 1.8L engine. The LT test car had a manual and the LTZ an automatic with manual thumb shifting capability. Sonics have the most power in this class and offer decent acceleration with either transmission. The manual shifted nicely and in my opinion, is the best transmission in this car. It seemed like the automatic shifted rough although the thumb-shifting button on the automatic was surprisingly useful. Engine noise is plentiful on acceleration, but quiets when you reach cruising speed while both road and wind noise are surprisingly subdued. The ride is very compliant and unexpectedly comfortable yet firm enough to feel in control. The car does not feel as small as it is probably due to low noise levels (after you are done accelerating), the great view out, and a roomy upfront.

After driving both cars, my money would buy the manual equipped LT sedan with the Connectivity Plus Cruise package. Drop the extra paint cost and wheel and fog light package, and I would expect to get into a new Sonic around $16,000. I didn’t feel the LTZ was worth the extra $3,000 over my LT test car and as I said before, I would get the manual transmission. A turbo was not available for testing, but for an extra $700, I don’t have to drive it to consider it a bargain for the additional torque, an extra manual transmission gear, and three and five more MPG on the city and highway, respectively. Overall the Sonic is a big leap forward for Chevy and a strong offering in a class that is becoming increasingly more competitive. If you are in the market for a small car with good fuel economy, start here and then drive one. It should be on your list.

General Motors has always been a global company, with vast holdings around the world. After all, it has been the world’s largest automaker for decades. After briefly losing the title, it appears GM will regain that spot for 2011. While being international in scope, GM never fully took advantage of that to create product synergies.

Every unit acted as if they were a standalone entity. That has begun to change over the past few years; the Cruze was one of the first truly global products at GM. The Malibu is a followup, as the first global mid-size sedan developed at GM. It will be sold in nearly 100 countries spanning six continents.

The result is that before the Malibu goes on sale here in the U.S, over 1 million test miles have been logged on 170 hand-built prototypes. And – you guessed it – they were tested on six continents, subjecting them to a variety of climates and conditions. The testing began the first quarter of 2010, which means 45,450 miles a month on average were logged on the roads of the United States, Canada, Australia, South Korea, China, England, Dubai and Germany. Mark Moussa commented saying:

“You learn a lot about a car when you spend so much time in it – and that’s exactly the point….in the last year and a half, during every minute of the day, a 2013 Malibu has been driving somewhere around the world – all to make it the best car it can be.”

That is an exhaustive development program, and it will benefit the company’s bottom line in numerous ways. NHTSA Investigation Shocks Chevy Volt’s Battery

We knew it was only be a matter of time when an automotive safety alarm bell would sound over an electric vehicle. One of the heaviest promoted vehicles unleashed on the North American marketplace in the past few years, the plug-in hybrid Chevrolet Volt represented a new way that automobile producers and customers could view roads in the near future. A high-profile vehicle, the brand-new Chevy Volt is now facing a publicly visible probe into a potentially dangerous defect that appeared during the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s New Car Assessment Program.

Following a standard side impact pole test in May of 2011 where a Chevrolet Volt was awarded a five-star rating (thanks in part to side curtain airbags), the major drama for the American-built plug-in hybrid car did not develop until three weeks after the crash. In June, a fire that engulfed the crashed car as well as three other vehicles was linked to the Volt‘s electrical propulsion system. Revealed in paperwork filed on the 25th of November, the resulting incident was traced to a failure of the Chevrolet Volt’s lithium-ion battery pack. Like most modern battery-powered vehicles sold or about to be sold in North America, the Volt’s electrical storage is temperature-controlled. Through the initial crash test, the NHTSA team discovered the coolant line damaged following the side impact, which is believed to be connected to excessive heat from an injured lithium-ion battery pack causing the vehicle fire.

Since the June fire, an investigation started by the NHTSA has included an attempt to replicate the condition that created the fire. In early November, three Chevrolet Volts were subjected to identical side impact pole crash test intent in recreating the potential cause of the fire five months earlier. Though those tests did not result in fires of the lithium-ion battery, the retest of the vital Chevrolet Volt component was recorded to have spark and smoke accompanied by an elevation in temperatures that reached up to 180 degrees Fahrenheit. While attempting to notify the public of their investigation on the Chevy Volt’s primary energy storage pack, the NHTSA cautions that there are no real-world incidents yet to result in a side impact causing the kind of battery damage occurring in the New Car Assessment Program test.
