I must say…I never thought you could do some of these things in an old Hyundai.

If you’re looking for the short version of this, just watch up until about 3 minutes into the video. It starts to get monotonous after that.

2009 Hyundai Sonata

Hyundai’s next step in becoming less boring is a facelift for the Sonata. While actually a bit less sharp-looking than the 2008 version, it has a more premium feel inside and out, and starts at only $18,795.

On sale later this month, the 2009 Sonata has an updated interior, more power, and better fuel economy then most it’s competitors. The 2.4L 4-cylinder version has 13 more horsepower, bringing it up to 175HP, and the 3.3L V6 is up 15 horsepower to 249. The transmissions are either a 5-speed shiftronic or 5-speed manual.

The Sonata is already a big seller. The upgraded features without jacking the price up too high are only going to help this year.

Hyundai Genesis Coupe Concept

Hyundai just unveiled a stunning concept at the LA Auto Show. It’s meant to be a preview of Hyundai’s upcoming 2+2 sports coupe, but let’s hope they keep a lot of the same styling cues from this concept.

The real-wheel-drive Genesis Coupe Concept will be a direct competitor of the BMW M3 and Ford Mustang, but set at a price point similar to a Mitsubishi Eclipse. The Genesis base model will be equipped with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, but the real winner here has a 3.8L V6 powerplant which should squeal wheels to the tune of 300+ horsepower, placing it directly next to the Mustang GT. Hyundai Veloster Concept

Hyundai seems to be testing the waters with a new direction in design, catering to the newest market - the “Y Generation.” Previously only attempted by Scion (and highly successful,) the Y Generation is the first time buyer currently in his early twenties or late teenage years.

Hyundai realizes that this is the next market they will be catering to, so they have started to think about a new direction in their lineup. I’m surprised more manufacturers haven’t tested out a few similar concepts to see what this new generation is looking for. Or maybe they just watch what Scion is doing.

The Veloster (the name is a combination of velocity and roadster) is focusing on a high-tech image, with a panoramic glass roof and other “futuristic” styling cues. I’d be interested to see what direction they’re heading for new designs. They’ve been doing a great job restyling their vehicles, particularly with the redesign of the 2008 Tiburon. This years New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) was quite the gathering. We had the opportunity to view some amazing debuts from major manufacturers. Car makers such as Subaru, Audi, Hyundai and Infiniti showed off some their latest models at the show and gave great presentations.

One of the interesting aspects of the show was the promotion and display of green technology. Of course with rising gas prices, one would expect for this trend to catch on. A unique exhibition at the NYIAS was the taxicab centennial display. There will be a special posting for this exhibit later on. Now, on to the cars!

Audi showed us the sport tuned version of their new coupe model, the S5. The S5 is based off of the A4 platform and is a hardtop but Audi will eventually release a convertible version by years end. Audi will be using the same 4.2 liter V8 used in the S4 with some updated injection technology for the S5 version. The horsepower rating for the engine is 354hp and will be paired with a six speed manual transmission to Audi’s all wheel drive system.

2007 Chicago Auto Show

On Saturday I posted another update on some of the cool cars that are going to be at the Chicago Auto Show, but there are so many, I can’t help but post again. Here are a few more of the cars that are going to be there in a couple days:

Mazda Ryuga

Mazda Ryuga Concept

The Ryuga expands on the “emotion of motion” concept that debuted with the Nagare, and you can see the elements of flow captured in the car’s sheetmetal. The sweeping lines on the doors, for instance, were inspired by the raked pebbles in a Japanese dry garden. The wheels, as well, feature spokes that twist near the hub, as if the torque of the car’s imaginary flex-fuel engine has twisted them. Finally, the color of the Ryuga is meant to evoke flowing lava, with tones and hue that vary from yellow to blue to red depending on the light.
