There aren’t many chances you get to drive a Ferrari. If you live in or around Texas, however, this may be your lucky day.

Navigon is currently holding a sale on their MobileNavigator apps for the iPhone. Unlike the majority of navigation apps for the iPhone, the MobileNav series holds all the information for navigation within the phone, which is two-fold. It does take up a lot more space than most apps, but you don’t have to pay for it monthly or yearly, either; it’s a one-time purchase.

Warning: If you own an iPhone 3G, do not buy this app. When I had my 3G I tried using this app and it was worthless, but I upgraded to the 3GS and it works much better. Also keep in mind the iPhone’s lousy GPS system – it’s often inaccurate, which can make even good apps like this useless if you frequently have problems with the phone finding your location, like I do. Having said that, if you’re looking for a good navigation app for your iPhone to give turn-by-turn directions, this is by far your best bet.

More people than ever will be traveling this Memorial Day weekend, a good majority of them in their own vehicle. If you have an iPhone, you’re in luck; there are plenty of apps available to make that long drive suck less. Let’s take a look at a few of them, some of which are on sale for a limited time or for this weekend only.

Internet Radio

Standard radio stations only have a limited range when traveling, forcing you to find a new station every hour or two. Satellite radio works, but but those monthly fees add up quick. Internet radio works anywhere, as long as you’re within range of a data network, making it perfect for long-distance travel.

Livio Car Internet Radio

Cost: $4.99 On Sale This Weekend Only: $1.99

Livio Car Internet Radio is a comprehensive new app that promises over 42,000 radio streams from AM, FM, and internet-only streams, including podcasts. If you like a radio station near home, you’ll still be able to listen to it when you’re away, or check out some new stations. You can browse by location or genre, and the app will make recommendations based on what you’re already listening to. The app is made for listening to in the car, with large buttons and a radio-like feel. It works on wi-fi, 3G, or Edge connections. As with just about everything nowadays, you can also share stations on Twitter or email them to a friend.

I downloaded Livio and was able to get set up quickly. It’s easy to navigate and select your stations, but one thing to keep in mind is that it’s based on the station’s internet stream, so some stations aren’t available at all, and quality can be spotty at times (I got a lot of static on some stations,) which isn’t Livio’s fault but it’s something to keep in mind. To curtail the quality issue, they have a “Reliability Filter” selectable in the settings that filters out low quality stations.

Pandora Internet Radio

Cost: Free

One of my favorite websites and apps, Pandora, is a 100% free internet radio service that plays a stream of music based on what it thinks you will like. Give it a song or artist you like and it will play other songs based on the musical qualities of what you’ve given it. Rate the song with a thumbs up or thumbs down and it adjusts its algorithm accordingly. I’ve discovered many new artists with Pandora, and I use it all the time. If fact, I’m listening to it as I write this.

Pandora is advertisement-driven, but you can upgrade to Pandora One for $36/year, which comes with a desktop app, higher quality audio, no ads, and custom skins.

Navigation

We all get lost, and the iPhone’s Google Maps app is great as long as you don’t need turn-by-turn directions. If you don’t have a full-featured GPS system, there are a few companies out there that have you covered. As with any iPhone GPS-dependant app, it’s good to keep in mind that the iPhone’s location feature isn’t the best, and it gets worse when you don’t have good coverage.

NAVIGON MyRegion

Cost: $29.99 On sale June 1-11: $14.99

Navigon’s MyRegion series of apps is a good way to go if you’re within the same region (East, Central, or West.) Three apps are available, one for each region, and you can unlock additional regions for $14.99 (or $9.99 during the June 1-11 sale.) My experience with Navigon products have been good – the system tends to be easy to use and intuitive.

The nice thing about these GPS apps that download the entire map to the phone upon purchase (as opposed to on-the-fly over the internet,) is that it’s generally a one-time cost instead of a monthly amount. The bad part about them is that it takes up a lot of storage space on the phone. With the MyRegion app, it downloads the ENTIRE US map but only activates what you’ve purchased. Seems like a waste of space to me, but it’s still an app worth looking into, especially during the 50% sale.

TomTom USA

Cost: $49.99

TomTom USA is one of the higher-rated navigation apps in the app store, and it’s offered at a reasonable price of $50, one-time. It offers real-time traffic (although the traffic info will cost $20/year – kind of a ripoff if you ask me,) Google local search, automatic day/night mode, text-to-speech, navigate to contacts, auto-recalculate, and a ton of other cool features.

I haven’t used this app personally, so I can’t give any hands-on advice, but it seems pretty solid based on the reviews.

To coincide with their expansion to new models, Lexus just announced that they will be offering a 20% discount on all equipment from their F-Sport accessories line, up to $2,000 ($10,000 worth of merch) for the month of July.

The F-Sport program, in case you haven’t heard of it, is designed to allow buyers of the Lexus IS (and now the IS C and GS) to add dealer-installed sport accessories to their cars. This program has been open to IS customers since early 2008, but just recently expanded into the IS C (convertible) and GS line. For the IS, the available upgrades include better brakes, clutch, engine cover, exhaust, performance air intake, quick shifter, shock set, lowering springs set, chassis brace, sway bar set, 18- and 19-inch forged wheels, floor mats and shift knob. In other words, a poor-man’s Lexus IS-F.

Upgrades for the GS include brakes, 19-inch forged wheels, sway bar set, lowering spring set, shock absorber set, exhaust, performance air intake, engine cover, shift knob and floor mats. So almost as much as the IS.

When installed by a dealer, F-Sport parts carry a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty OR the balance of the new car warranty at the time of installation (4 years, 50,000 miles) which ever is greater. If the parts are not installed by a dealer, the warranty is 12 months/12,000 miles.

Here’s what’s great about this sort of program. You can buy these performance and appearance upgrades directly from the manufacturer, which means they carry the above warranty; something you’re not going to get from those cheap-ass upgrades you find on eBay or most other parts stores. You also know that the parts are installed correctly, almost as if it was coming from the factory floor that way. Lastly, these parts were engineered by the same people who engineer the car you’re putting them on; not some weirdo’s garage in New Hampshire (or China.) They’re going to work right.

Here’s what sucks about this type of program: the parts are normally really expensive; much more than typical aftermarket upgrades. For example, the Performance Exhaust System for the IS costs $1,470 MSRP. After looking for a few other performance exhaust systems for the IS, I found their prices to hover around $650. Problem is, who knows how that exhaust will look, act, and sound? Plus, what about peace of mind with a warranty? Thankfully, the 20% coupon helps curb those prices a bit, making it more affordable for tuners to feel safe about their modifications.

Chris sent this to me this AM … Chris, like I, has a bad Jones for racing games, racing sims, and, although I’ve never asked, I bet Chris likes flight sims and other games as well.

What is pictured here, he found on eBay. It’s an all-in-one racing deal. Not only does it have a wheel and pedal controller, but also a 42″ Panasonic Plasma TV, speakers (including a subwoofer) as well as a built in PS2 and on board computer system with PC games such as the F-1, GT Racing, Le Mans, etc.

All for the low low price of US $9,800.00. If you buy it now!

Now I can’t vouch for this system myself, never having used one. I personally own a Hyperstimulator, which is all folded away, nice and neat in my garage (since I got really pissed an Bill Gates and his PC platform and said “Screw games on the PC!!!” one day). And although the owners/posters (perhaps the builders?) claim that the Virtual GT Racing Simulator is ” … by far the best simulator available under $20K.” I’d say it’d be hard pressed to beat the hyper unit for wheel & pedal feel.

Anyway, that’d be up to you and your money.

And room. You’d need lots of room, ideally a spare room, to keep his guy in. It seems to be about 7 feet by 4 feet by 5 feet. No exact figures are given, and I bet it also weighs a ton.

C’mon, one of you guys out there has to buy this thing.

Midnight Club: Los Angeles is a street racing video game that was just released in October. I’m in the process of playing this game right now, so expect a review on it soon. It’s a very fun game, and I would certainly buy it for $40.

I highly recommend picking this up if you like racing games, specifically older Midnight Club games, or the Need for Speed series. Set in downtown Los Angeles, this game starts you off in a beat-up Nissan 240SX, and you must prove your racing skills to the locals and move your way up through the ranks by earning Rep. As with other racing games, you get money the more races you win, and upgrade your car with a wide choice of performance parts and aesthetic changes such as body kits, neons, decals, etc. Eventually, you can buy other cars or win more cars through races. Pick this game up if you like this type of racer; you won’t find it this cheap again.
