For reason of controlled environmental factors and the ability to better lure cold-snapped car enthusiasts, the indoor auto show season becomes a regular cure to the blahs that kick in during late fall.</p><p>From the late 1980s through to the beginning of the 2000s, the North American International Auto Show existed as the grand showcase for the United States automobile market. Mainly a showcase for General Motors, Ford Motor Company and Chrysler in their figurative backyard, strength of those companies magnetically drew Japanese as well as European manufacturers to the Detroit show.</p><p>At the same time as Detroit’s reign as an uncontested mega show, planners behind the Los Angeles Auto Show scheduled the exhibition a week ahead of the North American International Auto Show. This scheduling created a logistical nightmare for auto companies (in particularly the Detroit 3). Levelled with more criticism than Michael Bay from hardcore Transformers Generation 1 fans following <a href="http://www.automoblog.net/2011/07/15/transformers-3-a-car-lovers-dream/">the live-action trilogy adaptation</a>, the Los Angeles Auto Show organizers finally bowed to pressure to reschedule their event in 2006. Instead of being the earliest North American major automobile exhibit on the yearly calendar, the Los Angeles Auto Show was moved to one of the latest in the year.</p><p>Following the weakened grip the Detroit auto manufacturers on the industry and the increased global focus in general, the Detroit North American International Auto Show is perceived to have lost some of its glamour. Adding the increased allure of an auto show in a generally warmer climate, the Los Angeles Auto Show has connected well in the car-centric California city. Some observers have also questioned lately if the LA car show could be overshadowing the Detroit display.</p><p>A question that must be asked when comparing the exhibit in Los Angeles and Detroit, is there a superior auto show?</p><p>&nbsp;</p><h3>Size of Exhibition</h3><p>Both the North American International Auto Show and the Los Angeles Auto Show provides a chance for any visitor to lose themselves in the best of modern automotive culture. With the Detroit show housed in the Cobo Center next door to the Red Wing hockey team’s Joe Louis Arena, exhibition floor space is rated at 623,500 square feet. The Los Angeles Convention Center has 720,000 square feet of advertised space. Both auto shows boast additional floor space with some estimates quoting for the North American International Auto Show as utilizing almost a million square feet of room.</p><p>The past two edition of these annual auto shows were not dictated by the size of the convention centers. Since 2009, the auto industry presence at major auto shows is beginning to recuperate from the economic damage. While many had downsized their presentations, other automakers chose not to display at either the Los Angeles or Detroit shows. The biggest drop in auto brand participation at the 2009 North American International Auto Show involved luxury brands like Bentley, Rolls-Royce and Porsche deciding to sit out Detroit. Nissan and <a href="http://www.automoblog.net/2008/11/26/mitsubishi-bails-on-detroit-auto-show/">Mitsubishi had also been no-shows at the North American International Auto Show</a> as a corporate entity. For the 2011 edition of the Los Angeles Auto Show, individuals over 65 of age are given $8 show entrance while children under 12 are admitted free with an adult. From November 18 through to Thanksgiving Day, there is a $2 discount if entrants use the E-Ticket system to purchase show admission. The North American International Auto Show’s pricing scheme offers adults over 65 years with $6 admission while free admission for children only covers up to 6 years of age (7-12 year old children are admitted at $6).</p><p>In regards to any auto shows, local residents should scan regional newspapers and deal sites for coupons or discount offers on general admission.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><h3>Quality of Vehicles at Show:</h3><p>The North American International Auto Show long had the ability to produce an impressive amount of global and United States automotive lovers with the first peak at the latest showroom vehicles. In the past edition of the Detroit-based auto show, the passion returned with 35 world car premieres bringing allure to the Motor City.</p><p>In recent editions of the Los Angeles Auto Show, new car debuts for the North American and world public has become more common. The debut of over 50 vehicles is taking place at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show. Finally, some view sport utility or crossover vehicles as a technological step backwards from progress made in respect to cars.</p><p>The outgoing generation of the Ford Escape leaves the compact sport utility vehicle market with a unique legacy of combating the stigma of taller automobiles. Adopting the Escape Hybrid in 2005, Ford even bested Toyota by producing a compact utility product capable of fuel economy in the low 30 mile per gallon range. Describing the nonwoven carpet like Spaghetti, material engineer Laura Sinclair illustrates the innovation for floor covering as a product of much study. “If you have more fibers running on each other – rather than what’s underneath, which can be more abrasive – that helps reduce wear.” Ford is no stranger to using ecologically friendly construction for interior features. Many automotive components are produced using plastic injection molding. From the smallest bushing to seat shells are formed through pushing heated polymer resin into a die. The MuCell Process developed by MIT and Trexel introduces the controlled use of gas (Co2 or nitrogen) while the part is being formed achieving many benefits. On he side of manufacturing, lower cost injection molding machines can be used and more parts per hour can be created thanks to reduced cycle times. As for the finished product, the gas injected during formation embeds millions of ultra-tiny bubbles that positively affect the part weight. Ford estimates the 2013 Escape instrument panel created through the MuCell injection molding process weighs more than a pound less than compared to conventional plastic producing processes. We&#8217;re under 48 hours from the start of the show, and it looks like good things are in store. From Ford, we&#8217;ve seen the updated 2013 Flex already, as well as teasers for updated Lincoln MKS and MKT models.</p><p>Today, Ford has revealed a teaser image of its updated 2013 Mustang on Facebook. An updated Mustang? It doesn&#8217;t seem that long ago that Ford was releasing the 2010 model. Ford has done a good job of keeping the Mustang fresh through style and engine updates. Especially the rear taillights; most we&#8217;ve talked to prefer the 2005-2009 models rather than the current look. Look for the 2013 to fix some of this; but don&#8217;t expect huge changes. The 2013 is a freshening rather than a complete redesign.</p><p>That means the platform and all the key structural points will stay the same. An updated headlights, taillights and interior are on the menu. As they say, the devil is in the details right? For instance, the interiors of Mustangs have tended to be a bit generic. Rich details from the original could be used in a modern way for the new model, much like Ford&#8217;s retro modern update to the 2013 Flex.</p><p>For instance, the interiors of past Mustangs have tended to be a bit generic. At Los Angeles, most of Ford&#8217;s introductions look like they will be updates to existing products. That might change a bit in the future though. as the company has indicated ST could be coming to more models. At the Los Angeles International Auto Show later in the month, Ford will be debuting the production Focus ST, which was previewed by a concept model.</p><p>The Focus ST has been billed as Ford&#8217;s first truly global performance vehicle. Now Ford is announcing the five-door Fiesta ST, which is also being billed as a &#8220;concept&#8221; at first. Most likely, it is anything but. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js"></script></p><p>Suped up hatchbacks have never really been a presence in the United States like they are in other countries, but with the Fiesta, Focus and other manufacturers having small hatches on the market, that could change.</p><p>For instance, who wouldn&#8217;t want to see a Mazdaspeed 2? It&#8217;d be pretty neat. Ford is testing the waters on the idea with the Fiesta ST. The Fiesta ST follows a similar template to the Focus ST before it, and Ford says that&#8217;s the whole point.<em> “With the Fiesta ST Concept, we are demonstrating that our global performance plan has legs,&#8221; says Jost Capito, Ford director of Global Performance Vehicles..the Fiesta ST Concept shows in the most dramatic way possible that the qualities that define an ST are not limited to one model&#8230;.the potential for delivering the ST experience to an even wider audience is laid bare by this exciting new concept.&#8221;</em></p><p>They sound pretty excited about it. Following the Focus ST&#8217;s mould means a distinctive, gaping maw front end, more aggressive, blacked out headlights, 17-inch wheels and a body kit. Power comes from an Ecoboost (what else?) 1.6-liter four-cylinder, delivering 180 horsepower and 177 pound feet of torque. It is mated to a six-speed manual transmission.</p><p>There&#8217;s no all-wheel drive to be found here either; the Fiesta ST remains a front-driver. We&#8217;d be shocked if the Fiesta ST didn&#8217;t make it to production. At the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show, German auto company BMW provided a centerpiece of droptop excitement as the completely redesigned 650i Convertible premiered.</p><p>While the previous creations giving a peek at the future 6-Series wore the word “concept” in it&#8217;s title. As the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show provided the first marque for showing the new BMW convertible, this car also the first United States showing of the 2012 BMW 6-Series giving first definitive answers to the North American version of the vehicle.</p><p>As expected, the styling of the BMW 6-Series cars appears reminiscent to the Concept Gran Coupe BMW as well as the most recent Concept 6-Series shown at the 2010 Paris Motor Show. Starting with the more protruded kidney grille and traveling along the more aggressively contoured side, the new production BMW 6-Series exterior design flows effortlessly. Resisting the allure of retractable hardtop roofs, BMW 6-Series Convertible engineers elected to maintain a multi-layer softtop to cover the cozy interior. Electronically-controlled, the roof deploys in just 19 seconds and can be retracted in 24 seconds. Besides being a beloved classic look, the BMW 650i Convertible&#8217;s election for a fabric top allows for better all-around storage.</p><p>The 2012 BMW 650i Convertible adopts much of the chassis and drivetrain hardware already field tested on the 7-Series and most recently on the 5-Series. Transmitting a very capable ride to the occupants, the BMW 650i Convertible rides on a double wishbone suspension design at the front and multi-link units at the back side wheels. Dynamic Stability Control, Cornering Brake Control as well as a special feature that compensates for brake fade keeps all-season run-flat tires firmly on the road. Through another function called Driving Dynamic Control, the driver can select the amount of interference of electronic control by choosing either a Comfort, Normal or Sport+ mode.</p><p>A 2+2 interior layout, the 2012 BMW 650i Convertible interior shell is created with high quality materials. A trademark of all BMWs continues to reign inside this 6-Series convertible as a driver-oriented cockpit enhances the motoring experience. BMW touts a new-generation Heads-Up Display as a multi-coloured, 3-dimensional driving aid. Optional equipment on the new BMW 650i Convertible, the windshield information projection system incorporates many of the vehicle&#8217;s modern safety features including BMW Night Vision and Lane Departure Warning System. Featured prominently within the refined dash panel is a 10.2 inch standard screen called a “Central Display”. Through the iDrive control pad, entertainment, navigation and phone functions are all relayed to the driver. As the era of loads of chrome and tons of steel departed quite some time ago, it had been evident that the American luxury car brand Cadillac was extremely slow in adapting to a changing motoring climate. Foreign-derived luxury cars of BMW and Lexus demonstrated through the 1990s, the market&#8217;s standard of luxury is not justified with heavy cars.</p><p>The Cimarron and Catera were two poorly-executed vehicles as General Motors merely handed Cadillac some underpowered small cars. In those two attempts, the vehicles were based off already existing platforms and Cadillac failed terribly at hiding that fact. It wasn&#8217;t until 2002 that GM&#8217;s top luxury division finally achieved premium quality on a smaller vehicle. The Cadillac CTS proved that the division could at least build an exciting mid-sized luxury sedan and lessons seem to be paying dividends on the SRX crossover vehicle. Despite this success, the Escalade and DTS continues to weigh down the Cadillac division (figuratively as well as literally). At the Los Angeles Auto Show, a major contradiction to the Classic Cadillac image is showing American luxury and style in a concept car smaller than a Scion xD.</p><p>The Cadillac Utility Luxury Concept is a cutting edge design study investigating how an American-branded premium vehicle could be sculpted to accommodate the tightest city confines. Only 151 inches in length, this urban concept vehicle is 39.4 inches shorter than the Cadillac CTS. In prospective to previous Cadillac products, the Urban Luxury Concept can fit inside the wheelbase of a 1971 Cadillac Fleetwood Seventy Five limousine. Also 68.1 inches wide and 56.9 inches in height, it is worth noting in a historical standpoint the Utility Luxury Concept is actually not the smallest Cadillac ever conceived. Prior to 1909, Cadillac had built several chassis structures shorter than the 97.1 inch length of this late 2010 concept vehicle.</p><p>The super compact design of this Cadillac etches a great deal of cues found on the larger production vehicles belonging to the luxury division. A pair of sweeping roof A-pillars, the stacked headlights and the large grille are all Cadillac staples translating well on to the Utility Luxury Concept car. Certainly not a Cadillac design feature is the scissor doors conceived to assure better interior access with minimum obstructions. Completing the tightly concocted outer appearance, a set of 19 inch wheels enhances the side with a maximum presence of metallic surfaces.</p><p>Through well-proportioned packaging, four adults can sit inside the micro Cadillac. If individuals with claustrophobia are well weary of the small outer dimensions, a large front windshield and twin skylights radiate a healthy dose of natural illumination and a greater sense of space. A very efficient and non-obtrusive dash panel is part of a minimalist approach the designers explored inside of the Cadillac Utility Luxury Concept. Multi-touch switches, touch pads, an elegantly-crafted speedometer and a high-definition heads-up display are intuitive and accessible to the driver. The Subaru Impreza Concept unearths a dynamic out-of-the-box view from the all-wheel drive specialist.</p><p>Motivated by the brand&#8217;s emerging brand identity as “Confidence in Motion”, Subaru asserts that this Impreza concept adapts a striking collection of shapes and textures which is yet evident in their production cars. &#8221;Through “Confidence in Motion”, we will continue to establish the relationship of confidence with more customers and further strengthen our Subaru brand.&#8221; Ikuo Mori, President of Subaru&#8217;s parent company Fiji Heavy Industries Ltd. said at the Los Angeles Auto Show&#8217;s press conference.</p><p>A sign of a new dimension of Subaru design, the Impreza Concept&#8217;s exterior is quite a defining sculpture constructed with remarkable simplicity. Little less than an inch longer in wheelbase, the Impreza Concept is considerably lower than the existing Subaru Impreza. This concept sedan by Subaru is even 1.8 inches shorter in overall height than a 2011 Impreza WRX. Performance-oriented front and rear styling charges emotion into the vehicle&#8217;s potential handling prowess while the silky smooth side is intentionally purposeful. “Hawk-eye-style” headlamps glow within the hexagonal front end form. Wheel arches are placed to emphasize the Subaru all-wheel drive system which launches the Impreza Concept. Unveiled at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show, the electric version of the Toyota RAV4 is officially given a once-over first by journalists and later by auto show spectators. Presenting 1 of 35 demonstrated models of the RAV4 EV which is admittedly retrofitted with an electric powertrain, Toyota has defined this prototype vehicle part of “Phase Zero”. President of Toyota Motors Sales USA Jim Lentz affirmed that continuing development of the Phase Zero RAV4 EVs will lead to enhancements to a 2012 production version.</p><p>The small sport utility vehicle will be built similar to fuel-burning RAV4 models at the Woodstock, Ontario, Canada plant. Small adjusts to the interior and exterior are performed to differentiate Toyota RAV4 EV from conventional RAV4 models. A new front end fascia involves a smaller grille opening (a customary design move since the cooling needs of an electric vehicle is far less than one powered by an internal combustion engine). Wearing a standard front and rear spoiler obtained through the existing Cayman Aerokit. Standard on the Porsche Cayman R, the Bold “PORSCHE&#8217; branded striping is not required to remark the brilliance and beauty of the classically derived sports car shape, the company often defines their proudest achievements within racing stripes. Black headlamp frames and mirrors completes the 2012 Porsche Cayman R styling.</p><p>In creating the 2012 R version, the Porsche Cayman&#8217;s body now rests 0.79 inches lower than the Cayman S thanks to a specialized sports suspension. Holding tighter to the ground, improved center of gravity translates into fluid handling in corners and more aerodynamic utilization in a straight line. Lightweight 19 inch wheels reduces the unsprung weight of the vehicle further enhancing the Cayman R&#8217;s manners. Notable absences inside the Porsche Cayman R is cup holder and the stereo system (though a premium audio system and a navigation computer can be optioned). The Cayman R&#8217;s sport bucket seats featuring carbon fiber backing and Alcantara construction is said by Porsche to have shaved 26 pounds from the vehicle&#8217;s total weight.</p><p>With all the weight-shaving attention, curb weight of the Porsche Cayman R is 2,855 pounds with a 6-speed manual or 2,910 fitted with the 7-speed, twin-clutch PDK transmission. Launched with 273 foot-pounds of torque, acceleration and speed is given a healthy bump. The Porsche Cayman R strips two-tenths of a second off the Carrera S times with a 4.7 second 0-60 mile per hour time achievable with the manual. The PDK transmission paired with the optional Sport Chrono package moves at a lightning fast 4.4 seconds. This time it&#8217;s the xB RS 8.0, which will be officially unveiled in a few days at the 2010 LA Auto Show.</p><p>As the name suggests, this will be the eighth version of the limited-run RS xB. What does Scion have in store for this one?</p><p>First up, and perhaps most obvious is an all new color, something Scion calls &#8220;Voodoo Blue.&#8221; It doesn&#8217;t have quite the depth of the &#8220;Speedway Blue&#8221; found on the recent <a href="http://www.automoblog.net/2010/02/09/scion-tc-release-series-6-0-details/">Scion tC RS 6.0</a>, but looks really good. Wearing the new color is an all-around body kit styled by Kenstyle, who has done the RS body kits for Scion in the past. In addition to the Kenstyle logo shamelessly placed behind the front wheel well, the body kit gets a front, rear lower valance, and side skirts. An optional rear spoiler is also available for $320.</p><p>Inside, you&#8217;ll get color-matched everything, including a black fabric with blue highlights seating surface, RS logo floor and cargo mats, and a cool new illuminated numbered badge &#8211; that&#8217;s a first for me.
