src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

As documented in publications such as Automoblog.net, the Swedish automaker Saab’s newly gained autonomy from General Motors has netted some serious growing pains under Spyker ownership. While trumpeting their future brand development with a new 9-3 and the 9-4x, most recent headlines have reported the halting of vehicle production at the Saab Trollhattan plant. Bad news was compounded by recent financial results by Saab’s parent company. Announcing results for the first quarter of 2011, Spyker Cars recorded a loss the equivalent to 118 million dollars US. Delivering some much-needed aid, two parties have provided the financial assistance needed for the Swedish automaker.

Spyker Cars announced they are selling 29.7% of their business to Hawtai Motor Group Company Limited in exchange for a 120 million Euro (approximately 178.3 million dollars US) investment into Saab. A Chinese-based auto company, Hawtai Motor Group was formed in 2000 just as the car market was beginning to explode in China. Building sport utility vehicles, Hawtai was recently connected in a successful yet short-lived joint venture with South Korean automaker Hyundai. In turn, Hawtai will gain access to Saab and Spyker’s international market as well as a distribution partner in China. Being seen as the rescuer of Saab, this has not been the first time Hawtai has been attached to a struggling auto company. In 2009, the Chinese vehicle manufacturer was mentioned as a possible stakeholder in the injured Chrysler Group.

Apart from the new automobile partnership, Spyker has also secured a separate deal acquiring 30 million Euro (just under 44.6 million US) loan from Gemini Investment Fund Limited. This short-term money will allow Saab Automobile AB to restart production within a week. A bit of complicated agreement, the financing from Gemini is described as a convertible loan that will translate into the lender receiving Spyker stock at a current fair market value of 4.88 Euros per share.

Both the Gemini and Hawtai deals effectively allow Saab to overcome another proverbial bump in the road. Sharing with many automotive observers the recent hiccups of the Swedish auto company, CEO of Spyker Victor Muller was up front with overcoming difficulties. “I would like to apologize to our dedicated employees, suppliers, dealers and customers for the disruptions of the past weeks. We will do everything in our power to restore the confidence in our company as soon as practically possible.” Muller said.

Fighting to bring profitability to an auto company which has recently been limited even by their own potential, Saab Automobile AB hopes to build on the optimism shown at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show for the premiere of the new Saab 9-3 and PhoeniX concept car. United Staes sales results for Saab are also showing encouragement after a tough year for the brand. For April 2011, Saab Car North America sold 696 vehicles netting a 227 percent improvement over 2010. Better yet, United States sales through the first 4 months of 2011 is measured at just under 700 percent better than last year. Globally, a sales increase of over 400 percent is recorded by Spyker Cars.

Information source: Automotive News, Saab Automobile AB

Related posts:

Troubled Carmaker Saab Files for Credit Protection

Saab Signs MOU with Chinese Partner Youngman

Saab Moves Step Closer to Securing Funding

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Mazda Minagi Concept’s Becoming the CX-5 for 2012

Car Design

Car News

Concept Cars

Frankfurt Motor Show

Geneva Auto Show

Mazda

2012 cars

Concept

crossover

crossover vehicle

Mazda CX-5

Designing small cars with the artisanship most automakers have reserved only their large, higher margin vehicles, Mazda could be viewed as a trendsetter in North America. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

Designing small cars with the artisanship most automakers have reserved only their large, higher margin vehicles, Mazda could be viewed as a trendsetter in North America. Mazda has ahead of Ford and Chevrolet who are only now realizing the personality available in compact designs. Unafraid to be unique at the risk of disturbing conventional car buying habits, the Japanese auto brand continuing support of rotary engines as well as radical, forward-thinking production such as the Mazda MPV is a hallmark of their past. Introduced as the MINAGI Concept car at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show in March, the 2012 Mazda CX-5 will be newest exhibit of the small car specialist’s enterprising future.

Launching their new compact crossover CX-5 for the 2012 model year, the vehicle will become the showcase for a more philosophical expression for Mazda adapting two, new guidelines, KODO and SKYACTIV. Brought to life on the SHINARI Concept, Mazda’s KODO design language is fueled by the desire to institute natural, free-flowing forms in sheetmetal and glass. SKYACTIV is Mazda’s approach to creating efficient, fuel-efficient motoring across the spectrum of creation. Instead of focusing solely on a key piece of technology to achieve desired efficiency, SKYACTIV covers technologies relating to the powertrain, chassis and body construction prioritizing weight reduction as well as improved torque production at lower range driving.

A sleek, brilliant crossover vehicle, the Mazda CX-5 uses the KODO design language to call off a sporty physique. Mazda describes the MINAGI Concept/CX-5 stance as projecting the strength of a cheetah. The CX-5′s front end wears a modified grille grin characterized with chrome trim. Evident at the Geneva Motor Show, the MINAGI Concept’s production ambition was made perfectly clear.

The 2012 Mazda CX-5′s interior reflects top-class construction. Displayed on the MINAGI Concept in black with satin chrome accents, comfort and even luxury wraps the crossover vehicle’s cabin. Solid, milled aluminum door handles accompany the high quality look inside of the Minagi Concept. When the 2012 Mazda CX-5 is released, expect to see a more entry-level cabin made available on lower cost trim models. However, based on the competitiveness of the compact vehicle market, Mazda will need to maintain few compromises in planning the production CX-5′s interior.

<script type="text/javascript"

For North American customers, expect the CX-5 to take the place of the Mazda Tribute compact utility vehicle. While Mazda’s SKYACTIV technology will be pivotal in selecting a fuel-efficient yet peppy powerplant, Mazda has not announced engine options for either the MINAGI Concept or the CX-5. Expect powertrain details to arrive close to its late 2011 to early 2012 release.

Information and photo source: Mazda Motor Corporation

Related posts:

Mazda TAKERI Concept Sedan to Debut at Tokyo Show

Mazda Shows Off New Styling Direction with SHINARI

Mazda Furai Pictures Leaked

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Successful 2011 Auto Shows Warmed by Winter Crowds

Canadian International Auto Show

Car News

Chicago Auto Show

Concept Cars

Detroit Auto Show

Events

Geneva Auto Show

Misc

Travel

2011 auto show

auto show

Geneva Motor Show

Regular attendees of at least one of the 2011 auto shows might have noticed the arenas and convention halls were a little more packed over previous years. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

Regular attendees of at least one of the 2011 auto shows might have noticed the arenas and convention halls were a little more packed over previous years. Through the winter months of 2011, the newly energized auto industry revealed a dizzying exhibition of enchanting forms and cutting-edge technology. Regaining the relevancy to a mode of transportation which enthusiasm was tainted by corporate greed and technological neglect, multiple auto shows occurring within the first three months of this new year have become the trendy places to spend a day.

The launch pad to the 2011 automotive exhibitions, the 2011 North American International Auto Show saw auto manufacturers once again projecting an optimistic look at the future of motoring. Innovative, exciting concepts like the Porsche 918 RSR were joined by products such as the Ford Focus Electric, Volkswagen Passat, and the new family of Toyota Prius offering a sensational exhibition of the 21st century inside Detroit’s Cobo Center. As always with the North American International Auto Show, the 9-day public event completed with blistery cold conditions providing a deterrent as well as an enablement to car show attendance. For 2011 Detroit auto show delivered a 3 percent increase totalling to 735,370 paying attendees. This attendance boost is welcoming as the North American International Auto Show was brought to grief of immediate economic effects just two years prior. Since 2009, attendance to the Detroit automotive display has risen by 80,000 spectators.

With a bump up in auto show spectators at Detroit, the momentum continued as the newest vehicles breezed into the Windy City for the 2011 Chicago Auto Show. Powered by a strong headwind of confidence for four-wheeled transportation, the Chicago Auto Show management announced a 10 percent increase over the 2010 show. The exact count for how many people attended the 10 days of the 2011 Chicago Auto Show is not available since the event organizers do not release audience numbers.

The upbeat message of the auto industry was also passed through Canada. Two major city car shows reported some healthy leaps thanks to fairly cooperate weather and a strong presence from all North American manufacturers. In late January, the Montreal Auto Show played host to an addition 10% general attendees. Counting 207,208 French-Canadian spectators, the enthusiasm turned to the 2011 Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto. A very robust presentation of an estimated 1,000 vehicles (I can attest to this fact personally), the show was looking to return to audience above 300,000 people after being hard hit two years prior. Showing a modest increase from 253,384 in 2009 to 258,652 in 2010 would make the 2011 prospect of lofty; this year’s Canadian International Auto Show pulled in 17.4 percent more spectators than 2010 according to publication Canadian Auto Dealer. If accurate, the actual attendance for the 2011 auto show in Toronto would have seen over 303,000 people basking in the warmness of the newest shapes radiating with light.

The rebound in interest for the automobiles is a global phenomenon and there was no better place than Geneva, Switzerland to give backing this declaration. With a tame estimate of 1.5 million North American car fans moving through the gates of the mentioned auto shows, the recently concluded 2011 Geneva Motor Show saw an increase of 6% over the 2010 event. Expecting the presence of 700,000 guests to see vehicles like the Ferrari FF, the Volkswagen Bulli concept and the complete rebirth of Saab, there was in fact over 735,000 arrived for the festivities in the late days of winter.

Many individuals and families partook in the auto show experience through the winter months as attention turns to spring. Spring is the first chance to see some of these previewed machines roaming roadways. Hoping that the auto show crowds will be a barometer for the upcoming activity at dealerships, 2011 has grounds for cautious optimism. While many carmakers are already enjoying strong sales, the audience at these indoor exhibitions could be either a cause or an effect.

Information Source: Canadian Auto Dealer, Canadian International Auto Show, Chicago Auto Show, Geneva Motor Show, Montreal Auto Show, North American International Auto Show

Related posts:

Journey Inside the 2011 Canadian Auto Show Part 1

Journey Inside the 2011 Canadian Auto Show Part 2

Los Angeles Vs Detroit: Which US Auto Show Rules?

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

VW Channels Microbus Past in Bulli Concept

Car Design

Car News

Concept Cars

Geneva Auto Show

VW

Bulli concept

compact car

Concept

concept car

Volkswagen

Volkswagen Bulli

VW Bulli

VW Group

In the late 1960s, the Volkswagen brand existed within the culture of peace and love being practiced by baby boomers as they railed against the establishment. Ironically, many member of this carefree crowd have unwittingly become the modern day establishment. Also changing, the Volkswagen brand eventually steered away from value-added vehicles turning to an upscale automobile provide for the United States market. In the case of Volkswagen, the premium price tags as well as some absurdly expensive offerings like the Phaeton flushed away the ideals of their early vehicles. Starting with the latest generation Golf introduced in 2010 and continuing through the show stopping 2011 model year Jetta, the German brand is reconnecting to its roots. Corresponding with the latest revolution for electric vehicles, Volkswagen newest concept vehicle shown at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show marries the best of retro design.

A small urban utility vehicle styled similarly to a Scion xB or xD, the Volkswagen Bulli concept car innovations come within a body featuring design cues from the Type 2 T1 Volkswagen van. Sold through the 1950s up to the 1970s, the classic van went a long way to establish Volkswagen’s identity (second only to the Beetle). Often referred to simply as the Microbus in the United States, the name Bulli (which the Geneva concept vehicle adapts for this theme recreation) identified the forerunner to the modern minivan in Germany.

Reminiscent to the T1 version of the Type 2 van, the Volkswagen Bulli front end, a giant VW crust is worn in the center. Employing a two-tone paint scheme, a red lower section is contrasted by a white higher section converges in a gradual fashion along the forward bodywork. Nothing is traditional about the Bulli’s headlamps as advanced dual beam units feature an L-shaped LED band for daytime running lights.

Admiring the Bulli concept vehicle’s side detail, the keen Volkswagen enthusiast is destined to be reminded of the 15-window models of the classic Deluxe Microbus. Along the side, multiple window surfaces are assembled on the Volkswagen Bulli concept with minimal interference between structural roof pillars. The only major roof pillars are integrated into the rear end. On the small tires, wheel covers styled for the hubcaps found on the classic Volkswagen Microbus.

Trending on design territory many production and concept vehicle have adopted in optimizing interior space, the Volkswagen Bulli cabin provides ample seating for four passengers. Fitted with thin, flat-surfaced bench seats, the large glass panoramic roof rains a gentle helping of natural light into the cockpit. For the driver, the Bulli concept introduces a high-tech interface with colour, multi-function instrument display. In the center of the front panel area, multimedia including a navigation system is controlled through an Apple iPad. Sound system hardware developed through Volkswagen’s new partnership with guitar outfitter Fender completes the exciting Bulli interior.

Volkswagen sells the Bulli concept structure as being suited for a variety of power source options including the conventional choices of gasoline and diesel fuel. For the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, the Volkswagen Bulli concept was a demonstration piece to a small electric vehicle powertrain. Tucked snugly in the front end, a single 85-kilowatt electric motor muscles the Bulli with 199 pounds-feet of torque. A hefty little green car, Volkswagen Bulli Concept in electric trim features a lithium-ion battery pack consisting of nearly 3,200 pounds. Running a maximum of 186.4 miles on a single charge, the Bulli features an astonishing ability of recharging in less than one hour at the proper “electric refuelling station”.

Displayed as a concept, Volkswagen is not shy to indicate the Bulli concept could be the basis for a production B-segment car. While Volkswagen already produces several minicars for the European market, there is yet to be a North American Volkswagen product smaller than the Golf. A vehicle based on the Volkswagen Bulli would be welcomed addition to an emerging B-segment vehicle marketplace such as the United States.

Information and photo source: Volkswagen AG

Related posts:

Toyota Yaris HSD Concept is No Yawner in Geneva

Volkswagen’s New Super Bug: The Beetle R Concept

Volkswagen Cross Coupe Concept Bows in Tokyo

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

MINI Rocketman Burning Up Geneva Show

BMW

Car Design

Car News

Concept Cars

Geneva Auto Show

MINI

compact car

concept car

Geneva Motor Show

mini car

MINI concept

MINI Rocketman

After a decade where large sport utility and crossover vehicles dominated sales charts, the modern era of automobiles is breeding a new generation of thinking. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

After a decade where large sport utility and crossover vehicles dominated sales charts, the modern era of automobiles is breeding a new generation of thinking. Rising the popularity, compact utility vehicles consists of applying lessons gained from considerably larger vehicles to more condensed spaces. Making a culturally significant brand out of a small vehicle, MINI is convincing in their approach for bringing big utility to a small car. Only a few months since unveiling the Paceman Concept, the MINI brand’s inspirational juices continue to flow through the compact car specialist group as the MINI Rocketman debuts for the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

Showing itself as a trendy concept exhibiting some new approaches in practical and aesthetic design, the MINI Rocketman telegraphs many innovative features. Residing within a very tight 3.3 meter total length, the MINI Rocketman Concept car proposes even more restrictive confides for the small car’s brand creativity than the current MINI Cooper. On the front, the concept car’s grille work resides within a pronounced oval surrounding. Allowing convertible exposure without giving up all-weather production of a hardtop, the MINI Rocketman is fitted with a glass roof. Assembled within the structure of the transparent roof is a complex brace pattern resembling the British Union Jack flag. A patriotic symbol often painted on the roof of the original Mini car, the new MINI brand (even under ownership of a German auto company) maintains close connections to its past. Offering a modern twist, ambient lighting shines around the lower interior sending out a near celestial look around the Rocketman.

Presenting interesting exterior dynamics, the MINI Rocketman explores some inventive artisanship in door mechanics. Passenger entry doors are double-hinged to open straight rather than the tradition swinging fashion. Perhaps the most eye-catching element to the MINI Rocketman’s exterior is the opening of the doors. Enabling access for the driver and passengers, the MINI Rocketman doors are less intrusive to surrounding vehicles or pedestrians. On the rear tailgate, a bottom section of the Rocketman Concept pulls out like a drawer for unique loading.

Sculpting an interior featuring plenty of shine and high-quality material use, MINI has left the Rocketman concept a model of simplicity. Similar to the production-based MINI in some faucets of dash layout (in particularly the center-mounted speedometer), the beauty of this design is undefeated by control pads and LED displays. The before-mentioned speedometer of the MINI Rocketman does integrate 3D graphics presentation for conveying much relevant information to the driver. Through a removable element, MINI allows users of the Rocketman concept to import mobile communications and navigation data into the vehicle after configuration on a computer.

Similar to the capacity of the lunar space capsules launched by NASA, the Rocketman concept car is set-up ideally for three passengers. Classified as a 3+1 seat vehicle, the MINI Rocketman can upgrade to a fourth seat at the discretion of users. Intended to offer flexibility, the absence of the fourth passenger allows much greater interior luggage space. The MINI Rocketman also allows longer objects such as skies to ride within the rear cargo drawer.

Being a design concept, technical specifications relating to the powertrain has not been released in relationship to the MINI Rocketman. Most likely to become the forward look at what features could be presented in the MINI Cooper, Clubman and Countryman, the Rocketman concept proposes more big feats for this compact car builder.

Information and photo source: BMW Group

Related posts:

MINI Kills Rocketman from Last Year’s Geneva Show

MINI Lineup Advances with Paceman Concept

The MINI Beachcomber

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Eclectic Meets Electric: Rolls-Royce 102EX Phantom

Car Design

Car News

Concept Cars

Electric

Geneva Auto Show

Rolls-Royce

Concept

concept car

electric car

Geneva Motor Show

Rolls-Royce Phantom

Throughout its existence, Rolls-Royce has relied on the use of internal combustion engines in propelling their automobiles to the highest of heights in luxury motoring. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

Throughout its existence, Rolls-Royce has relied on the use of internal combustion engines in propelling their automobiles to the highest of heights in luxury motoring. The 107-year of building vehicles to the ultimate zenith of uncompromised luxury, Rolls-Royce’s history has gravitated to gasoline. Even as modern trends seek a new definition of luxury through more compact sizes and alternative powertrains, British luxury badge Rolls-Royce was never seen on a provocative design study until the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. Experimental concept car Rolls-Royce 102EX Phantom reveals what could be the grandest electric car ever produced.

Composing the form of the production-going Rolls-Royce Phantom sedan, the 102EX project car major notable difference is found through underneath the enormous 229.7 inch body. Gone from under the Rolls-Royce’s bonnet, the 6.7 liter V-12 engine and 6-speed automatic transmission is replaced with a more experimental propulsion. The 102EX Phantom EE (Experimental Electric) features an all-electric transplant consisting of two electric motors and a Lithium-Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese-Oxide battery. Rolls-Royce contacted British-based Lotus Engineering for the outfitting of this zero-emissions electric powertrain. Foregoing the 453 horsepower which would be been on tap if the V-12 gasoline engine was retained, each electric motor produces 145 kilowatts of energy collecting in moving the converted Phantom EE with 389 horsepower. Projected charging time for the Rolls-Royce 102EX Electric’s lithium ion battery is estimated at 8 hours on a three-phase power supply.

Balancing the electrical power hardware in the engine compartment and behind the rear seat, Lotus Engineering maintained 50:50 weight distribution on the Rolls-Royce 102EX Phantom EE sedan promising some rather impressive performance. According to Lotus Engineering, 0 to 62 mile per hour acceleration is under 8 seconds inside Rolls-Royce’s 102EX concept car. Behind strong but silent acceleration, this Rolls-Royce achieves an electronically-limited top speed of 160 kilometers per hour (just under 100 miles per hour). Slightly subdued compared to the production Phantom model, the Rolls-Royce 102EX concept’s powertrain achieves quiet, graceful movement befitting the product’s ‘Phantom’ name.

In classic Rolls-Royce manner, the electric-powered concept sedan continues to feature fine interior and exterior details few automobiles would dare to replicate. A painstakingly applied 16-coat paint scheme over the Phantom’s aluminum body blends a compound called Atlantic Chrome into the gentle blue exterior. A ceramic nano particle said to be up to 80,000 times thinner than a hair, the 102EX Phantom EE is given a highly reflective shimmer. Special outer design attention was also directed at the electric recharging port. Located on the passenger side of the rear roof pillar, a five-pin socket is accompanied by tri-coloured LED lighting behind a clear access door. Rolls-Royce is also said to be testing a version of induction charging which requires no physical contact through the electrical recharging process.

Inside, the Atlantic Chrome treatment is found within the dash dials, a battery charge indicator appropriately takes the place of the fuel gauge. Unique wood veneers and leather is chosen by Rolls-Royce for the Phantom EE suiting the more environment conscious theme. Using a upholstery called Corinova leather, vegetable-based tanning is brushed on the providing a colouring which is not only petroleum free but recyclable.

Shown at the Geneva Motor Show without true intentions of production, the 102EX Phantom EE concept demonstrates that Rolls-Royce could be connecting with its history more than some would believe. Amusingly enough, that co-founder Henry Royce humble beginning involved working as an electrical engineer.

Information and photo source: Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

Related posts:

2009 Rolls Royce Phantom Gets A Facelift

2009 Rolls Royce Phantom To Get A Facelift

Rolls-Royce To Reveal Phantom Coupe at Geneva

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Gumpert Takes Wraps of New Tornante Supercar

Car News

Geneva Auto Show

Gumpert

Apollo

Gumpert Apollo

Gumpert Tornante

Tornante

This year’s Geneva Motor Show has seen a good concentration of new supercar introductions. Lamborghini unveiled the new Aventador LP700-4, a successor to the Murcielago LP-670-4 SuperVeloce, and Pagani took the wraps off the Huayra.

German manufacturer Gumpert is taking its turn now with the Tornante. The Tornante succeeds the Apollo supercar that debuted in 2005. Like Pagani, Gumpert focuses on delivering a more refined experience with increased performance.

The Tornante is definitely more aesthetically pleasing than its Apollo forebear. Gumpert worked with Italian coachbuilding manufacturer Touring Superleggera on the car’s design.

The Apollo was a very over-the-top and in-your-face design with many different surface elements going on. The Tornante gets a smoothened out appearance that improves aerodynamics and reduces visual busyness.

Up front there is a large grille with redesigned front intakes working in concert with smaller, more modern headlamps. Key elements from the Apollo like the cabin-mounted rear view mirrors and gull-wing doors remain. A smoothened body shoulder runs to the rear of the car, turning into large, flowing haunches. The rear gives of a bit of an old Corvette vibe, with dual taillights at each corner and a split rear window. The car’s main inspiration overall seems to be taken from aviation.

The Superleggera (Italian for “super light”) in Touring Superleggera is definitely in full effect for the Tornante. The body is made from composite, with a chrome-molybdenum steel space frame and a carbon fiber monocoque.

Official performance specifications have yet to be released, but the car sticks with Audi-sourced power, using the Apollo’s 4.2-liter twin-turbo V-8. Gumpert, of course, did some reengineering that results in a power output of 700 horsepower and 663 pound feet of torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic.

The Tornante is set to go on sale in 2012, and the company says an even more powerful performance version in the works, planned for a launch around the same time.

Related posts:

Gumpert Apollo Hybrid To Race At Nurburgring 24

Dodge Takes the Wraps Off Charger SRT8

Jaguar XKR-S Unveiled, Takes Spot as Jaguar Performance Leader

Automoblog.net - src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

Lately, automotive manufacturers like Tesla and Fisker have burst onto the scene aiming to carving a niche selling electric vehicles. Attempts at a being a mainstream independent manufacturer in the automotive industry often don’t fare too well though.

Most don’t get past the vaporware stage. However, De Tomaso is set for a full relaunch. Italian businessman Gian Mario Rossignolo purchased the company in 2009 and set out on a business plan that includes three models: a crossover, sedan and sports car.

Curiously, a new sportscar was not chosen to relaunch the company, but instead a new sedan/crossover. It was known as the SLS for quite sometime, but a name from the company’s past, Deauville, is being used instead. This lends credence to the fact we might be seeing a new Pantera sometime in the future.

The fact that the Deauville is being introduced as a new production model from an independent company is a pretty remarkable feat.

The Deauville is billed as a sedan, but it has interesting proportions for one. The car rides much higher than a typical sedan and is placed in the blended sedan/crossover genre. It brings to mind vehicles like the BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo, which is likely to be this car’s competition.

The styling plays it safe – some more originality would have been nice, but the Deauville is clean and looks good from certain angles. What it doesn’t do is set out a certain DeTomaso styling language. Maybe that’s the recipe for sales success though. Attention to detail is apparent, with nice detailing the headlights.

It isn’t clear what vehicle the Deauville is based on (maybe the Cadillac SRX) but there is a liberal use of the Cadillac parts bin in the interior. The steering wheel, door panels as well as the vents and center stack are Cadillac-sourced.

That isn’t a bad thing, as Cadillac’s interiors have garnered praise. One key difference is the Deauville adopts a navigation screen inside the dash rather than the popup one Cadillac uses. Rich details again play a part of the luxury experience, and De Tomaso plans to draw on Italian craftsmanship and heritage as one of the car’s selling points.

By playing to its Italian heritage and craftsmanship, De Tomaso will likely find a good market in Italy. It isn’t clear if the company will enter other markets in Europe or what its future plans are.

Regardless, in terms of sales De Tomaso seems to be off to a good start, with Rossignolo announcing the company has received over 1,450 orders for the Deauville.

Related posts:

DeTomaso Licenses Deauville To The Chinese

DeTomaso Pantera To Launch At Frankfurt Show in September

Cadillac DTS Takes a Final Bow

Automoblog.net - src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

The Geneva Motor Show is in full swing, and Audi is debuting the A3 Concept, a preview of its next-generation A3. Right now, the brand’s sales momentum looks to only be building, with a record year globally in 2010 and continued gains for the month of February.

The entire lineup appears to be poised well for future success. One area Audi has looked to expand is downmarket, with the A1 debuting in Europe. That car isn’t coming to the United States though – for now the A3 will remain the smallest Audi.

As a five-door hatchback, the A3 hasn’t caught on here. The small-premium segment is growing in the U.S though, and Audi is looking to compete with a proper four-door sedan A3.

The A3 Concept looks to offer a good preview of the (a pretty insane!) next-generation RS3, based on its specifications. Rather than a hybrid or an engine with a more conservative power output, the A3 Concept is powered by a five-cylinder TFSI unit.

TFSI means turbocharging and direct injection, and utilizing this technology the engine produces 408 horsepower and 368 pound feet of torque. Whoa! In the compact and lightweight A3, it is powerful enough to scoot the car to 0-62 mph in 4.1 seconds. We guarantee the A3 won’t come standard like that!

As for the styling…..ding ding! We have a winner. The proportions just work perfectly with the design of the A3 Concept. Audi’s look is well known by now and overall, they haven’t messed with the formula drastically for this car. It is for good reason though – it has been highly successful. What’s more, the brand’s design language has never looked better on a sedan than right here on the A3 Concept.

The A3 Concept has a very athletic stance and planted presence. Up front, the large, floating grille dominates, flanked by aggressive inset headlights. The rear end has a sloping, coupe-like roofline with a notchback trunk. The car’s lines convey motion and its sporting intentions. There is a prominent rising side body line that continues to the rear end where it wraps around with a large bumper.

A key part of Audi’s styling language has been a stand out lighting package, and the A3 debuts a further evolution of what has been done. Like the recently-introduced A6, the car shows an amber LED turn signal in the front and rear headlamps. There are also unique details on this car, such as carbon fiber mirrors with an LED turn signal swoosh and door handles with an unconventional design. Hopefully some of these elements won’t be concept-only and will make it to the production A3.

Interior design is an area where Audi has explored different themes lately. Audi interiors are known for their quality craftsmanship and design, and the latest ones from the brand look to be no different. The A7 Sportback and A6 have debuted low, horizontal and driver-focused layouts.

The A3 Concept mixes things up a bit. While it has a horizontal design, it shares more with the A1 sedan, which has a bit of a retro-feel. That means round vents with chrome details – something the current A3 also has.

It appears as if Audi uses the rounded vents on its lower-end or more sport-intentioned models, which makes sense. With the A3 Concept, the emphasis is definitely toward the sport end of the spectrum rather than luxury. Today, advanced powertrains often combining gasoline/electric technology, such as Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive, has become more buzz-worthy ways to tout extended traveling ranges on a single tank of fuel. Building the Prius, the most publicly accepted hybrid car built, Toyota has been unafraid to expand the concept across many vehicles within the Toyota and Lexus brands. At the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, Toyota unveils what will be their first subcompact hybrid production car based on a new look Yaris.

The Toyota Yaris HSD Concept presents a new look B-Segment category car which is intended to resemble the next generation of the production car. Proving the first major restyling of the Yaris since 2005, this Toyota concept vehicle projects a degree of excitement with a more angular front end featuring LED daytime running lights. A sporty look for the Toyota Yaris HSD Concept is enhanced by an arcing side roof profile traveling into a sloped C-pillar. Rear spoiler, 18-inch aero wheels and fog lights are added to this hybrid Geneva show car providing an impressively high amount of exterior flash on a Toyota.

The newest application of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive system, this Yaris concept car is pledging class-leading fuel economy. Though Toyota has not detailed the exact internal combustion powerplant, several facts regarding the electric mode have been revealed. Firstly, the Toyota Yaris HSD Concept car has the ability to run in a all-electric mode producing near zero emissions for a limited distance. This feature is similar to latest generation Prius which allows speeds up to 25 miles per hour to be handled briefly on only electric power. Other Technology the Yaris HSD Concept shares in common with the late model Toyota Prius is solar panels in the roof. For this Geneva concept vehicle, the use of solar charge panels spans the entire Yaris hatchback’s roof.

Speaking only for the European car market, Toyota says the production of the Yaris HSD Concept is due for the second-half of 2012. In the United States, the Toyota Yaris has been losing ground in the continent’s now abundant B-Segment category. Newer, higher-tech compacts such as the Honda Fit, Ford Fiesta and the upcoming Chevrolet Sonic have been cutting deep into the aging Yaris’ sales. In 2010, the Toyota Yaris sales nosedived by 36.7% over the previous year. Losing out to competition and a new-found enthusiasm for larger truck-based vehicles due to a period of fuel price stabilization, a refreshed Yaris could be the fix Toyota needs in refreshing sales.

Information and photo Source: Toyota UK via Newspress UK

Related posts:

Toyota Recalls 134,900 Yaris Models Over Seatbelt Issues

Live from SEMA 2008: Toyota Yaris with Carbon Fiber Hood

Hyundai i-flow Concept Revealed at Geneva

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Alfa Romeo 4C Concept Unveiled at Geneva

Alfa Romeo

Car News

Geneva Auto Show

4C

4C Concept

Alfa

Alfa Romeo 4C

Alfa Romeo 4C Concept

If one car got everyone talking about Alfa Romeo again, it no doubt was the 8C Competizione. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

If one car got everyone talking about Alfa Romeo again, it no doubt was the 8C Competizione. The 8C was designed as a range-topping halo to help relaunch the brand’s image around the world.

It was very successful in doing so, and in late 2008 it marked the return of an Alfa Romeo being sold in the United States, albeit in very small numbers.

The last time an Alfa Romeo was sold here as a volume production car was in 1995 with the 164. Enabled by the partnership with Chrysler, it looks like Alfa Romeo is finally going to make a return. When, we still don’t know for sure; but it is in the works. The 4C might be one of the cars to do it with.

Simply put, the 4C Concept’s styling follows in the 8C Competizione’s footsteps by being an absolutely gorgeous sportscar. The is mistakably Italian in design, with swoopy, flowing lines is used to great effect. These are traits that help clearly define the 4C as an Alfa Romeo.

Where the 4C sets itself apart from the 8C is its mid-engined design. While the the 8C has a long hood and cabin at the rear, the 4C has different proportions. They help offer a certain supercar panache to a car that is much smaller than the 8C. We aren’t sure where Alfa Romeo would price the 4C, but the styling should sell it at any rate.

The car gets its 4C designation from the amount of cylinders – four. The car is powered by a 1.7-liter gasoline unit making 200 horsepower. It is mated to Alfa’s dual-clutch transmission. While 200 hp might not seem like a lot, the 4C gets its performance from low weight rather than power like the 8C.

It is compact and has an extensive use of materials designed to reduce weight. The body and structure is made of carbon fiber, with spaces inside for the driver and passenger. The rear frame structure and crash boxes are made from aluminum. This results in a startlingly low curb weight of just 1873 pounds. That is good for a 0-62 mph run under the 5 second mark, as well as impressive fuel economy from the small four-cylinder.

The best part about this? The car is headed for production. Alfa Romeo says “this is not simply an exercise in style created for the Motor Show; it will be on sale in 2012 and is set to reinforce Alfa Romeo’s global growth.” Sounds good to us, bring it over here Alfa!

Related posts:

French Designer Renders Alfa Romeo GTA

Zagato Alfa Romeo TZ3 Corsa

Prodrive’s Limited Edition Alfa Romeo Brera S 3.2

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Saab PheoniX Concept Shows Future of Saab Design

Car News

Concept Cars

Geneva Auto Show

Saab

PheoniX

PheoniX Concept

Saab PheoniX

Saab PheoniX Concept

In public image, Saab has moved to quickly distance itself from its rocky period of ownership under General Motors. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

In public image, Saab has moved to quickly distance itself from its rocky period of ownership under General Motors. A new “Independence Day” promotion celebrating Spyker’s one-year ownership of the brand, as well as a 9-3 Independence Edition are all part of these moves.

The reality though is that the lineup as it sits currently was developed under GM’s ownership. Work is now moving forward on the next-generation of Saab cars that will form the future of the brand. To show what is in store for new models, the company is debuting the Saab PheoniX Concept at the Geneva Motor Show.

The car has been designed by Saab’s chief designer Jason Castriota. Its name, PheoniX, is fitting for what Saab has been through. Stylistically, the car debuts a new design language for Saab dubbed “Aeromotional.”

The look is meant to draw from Saab’s aviation history with shapes that convey motion, emotion and a wind-driven look. For the most part, the design works well. The body-work does look “molded by the wind” and we love the nod to Saab’s past with the rear roofline and window design. Does it really stand out though as uniquely Saab? Saab needs a defining set of brand design traits and they need to work out what cues will set the brand apart when it comes to production vehicles.

Something that likely won’t be making it to production is the car’s “winglets” mounted on the roof. They aim to channel the car’s airflow and reduce lift, therefore creating greater stability.

Up front, the direction of Saab’s styling has taken a different tack, It is low and wide, with small headlights and minimalist look. Overall, we have to say we liked the Aero X Concept’s vision for Saab’s design future better. The interesting part will be seeing how the PheoniX’s style develops and translates to production.

For propulsion, the car utilizes – what else – a hybrid drivetrain. The system is used to create an all-wheel drive system, which Saab has named eXWD. Up front, there is a 1.6-liter turbocharged, all-aluminum gas engine making 200 horsepower. It drives the front wheels and includes start/stop technology. To save weight, Saab went with a stainless steel gas tank rather than the usual plastic tank.

Powering the rear wheels is a 34 horsepower electric motor/generator and battery pack. The system uses regenerative braking to maintain a charge. The system is geared to be highly efficient while proving the benefits of all-wheel drive. It’s good to see the PheoniX Concept making an appearance at Geneva – it shows the company is alive and well, and working n future products. We’re interested in seeing what the brand brings to the table with the next production model set to debut, the all-new 9-3.

Related posts:

Spyker & Saab CEOs To Run 57 Saab 93 In Mille Miglia

Saab To Auction Museum Cars, “We Are Saab” Rallies Being Held In 42 Countries

One Ford: Ford Evos Concept Shows Off Global Design Language

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

The Latest Bull Run: The Lamborghini Aventador LP-700-4

Car Design

Car News

Geneva Auto Show

Lamborghini

2011 cars

Aventador LP-700-4

exotic car

Lambo

Lamborghini Aventador

New Cars

Supercar

Heading out like a lion (or rather a bull), Lamborghini Murcielago retired following a 9-year run as a still on the top of the supercar prestige ladder. Cresting at a horsepower peak of 661 horsepower (introduced on the LP670-4 SuperVeloce model in 2010), the Murcielago’s departure left Lamborghini with a lofty requirement of replacing their flagship supercar with yet another evolution in top speed driving. Teasing with pictures of the unfinished monocoque and the Sesto Elemento concept, Lamborghini unveils their new supercar ahead of the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

Called the Lamborghini Aventador LP-700-4, the Italian automaker gained inspiration from a Spanish bull deemed “the most courageous of all bulls” in naming their new production supercar. Every bit of the new Lamborghini Aventador LP-700-4 is an advancement on the outgoing Murcielago. Casting recollections to the Sesto Elemento show car Lamborghini displayed at last year’s Paris Motor Show, the Aventador supercar design features an evolved look with lightweight materials. Constructed on a carbon-fiber monocoque weighing only 325.2 pounds, the Lamborghini Aventador LP-700-4 is build on a lightweight yet rigid structure.

Using aluminum and carbon fiber to create the Aventador body shell, the headlamp pods is given a conforming 5-point polygon. On the side, taller side air intakes are merged into the new vehicle shape with electronically-managed cooling ducting. Along the rear side of the Lamborghini Aventador LP-700-4, aerodynamics can be tailored through the manipulation of a rear spoiler to 3 different positions. Specially-sculpted rear window provides a peak into the engine compartment with a ribbed-glass appearance. Held firm to the ground with an aluminum double wishbone suspension, the Lamborghini Aventador LP-700-4 rides thanks to a pushrod and damper system inspired by Formula 1 race cars. Carbon-ceramic braking is coupled with electronic stability control and anti-lock braking system to create excellently-suited handling. The latest exercise of Lamborghini’s all-wheel drive sports cars, a Haldex 4th generation system on the Aventador LP-700-4 spins performance-rated Pirelli tires encompassing 19 and 20-inch wheels.

Opening up the scissor-movement doors carried over through Lamborghini since the Countach, the Aventador LP-700-4 supercar is brilliantly-layed with technology to best accompany the new car’s 21st century performance feel. The two seat cockpit of the Lamborghini Aventador LP-700-4 supercar is fitted with premium-grade interior materials as two-tone interior colours provides an unmistakable sport look. A TFT (Thin Film Transistor) LED screen rests in the center of the dash panel which can aid in the use of optional equipment such as a premium sound system and reverse-facing camera.

In the Spanish language, Aventador means fan or blower. As high-performance is the business of Lamborghini, its worth observing exactly how this exotic car bends air. Igniting a newly-designed V-12 engine with a red-marked start button, a 6.5 liter mid-mounted powerplant for the Aventador LP-700-4 is calibrated for 700 horsepower and 509 pounds-feet of torque. Weighing just 518 pounds, the new engine is protected through oiling from a 13-gallon dry sump system. This 700-horsepower engine is connected to an all-new automated manual gearbox called an Independent Shifting Rod (ISR) transmission. Using an individual shifting rod for each of the 7 gears, the Lamborghini Aventador’s ISR transmission is stated to be considerably lighter than a conventional manual gearbox.

As such as many would sit and marvel at the beauty of this new Lamborghini Aventador LP-700-4 at a standstill, the object of any supercar is to apply astonishing horsepower and aerodynamic profiling into a lightning fast exotic vehicle. The Lamborghini Aventador LP-700-4 delivers impressive performance reflected first in a 0 to 62 mile per hour time of only 2.9 seconds. If given the road, the Aventador supercar’s full speed potential is reached at 217 miles per hour.

Slated to start production soon at the Italian brand’s new Sant’Agata Bolognese facility, the first Lamborghini Aventador LP-700-4 supercar will be destined to the first customers for summer of 2011. The price to send a Aventador to a United States driveway will run $379,700 including the gas guzzler tax.

Information and photo source: Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A.
<a For the most part they have a stigma that is similarly shared with hatchbacks and minivans. In Europe however, wagons are best sellers in the marketplace.

As such, for instance Jaguar is placing a high priority on launching a new XF wagon (“estate”). Saab is also doing the same with the new 9-5 that launched last year. With goals for higher sales in 2011, Saab is counting on new models like the SportCombi to help boost sales in Europe.

Its clear that the modern wagon entries are nothing like their predecessors, and Saab proves that a wagon can indeed by very good looking with the 9-5 SportCombi. If any car can change perceptions about wagons, this should be it.

There isn’t details revealed about the car yet, but Saab has taken the wraps off a few pictures as well as dropping a short video revealing the car in a menacing black color. It’ll be interesting to see if the car is sold in the U.S and how it fares if it does. With vehicles like this, Saab deserves a comeback in 2011.

Related posts:

Saab 9-5 SportCombi Details Revealed in Brochure

Spyker & Saab CEOs To Run 57 Saab 93 In Mille Miglia

Saab PheoniX Concept Shows Future of Saab Design

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Saab Sets Flight Plan with New 9-3 Griffin in Geneva

BMW

Canadian International Auto Show

Car News

Engines

Geneva Auto Show

Saab

Spyker

93 aero

Geneva

Geneva Motor Show

Saab 93

Saab cars

At the 2011 Canadian International Auto Show’s media day, Saab ‘s executive director of North American sales John Anderson spoke with great enthusiasm on the upcoming Saab 9-3. While not revealing any teaser images (jokingly saying he would likely be fired), Anderson did admit to seeing the 9-3 ahead of Geneva during the festivities at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show. As the Saab executive director of North American sales describes the 2012 model year 9-3 as a strong representation for Saab’s identity, the 2011 Geneva Motor Show premieres this awaited motoring creation.

Being made available as a sedan, SportCombi, Convertible and 9-3X model, he 2012 Saab 9-3 trim levels choices will include a top-end Aero. Showcasing a revised front end featuring the “ice block” headlight housing incorporating a blue-green hue first shown on the new 9-5, fog lights are standard on all models of the Saab 9-3. Along the new front end treatment, the new 9-3 receives a grander front grille. On Aero models of the Saab 9-3, distinguishing details such as a mesh grille insert and chrome fog lamp surroundings while riding on special 17-inch wheels. Providing an interesting addition, 2012 Saab 9-3 will be accompanied by ‘Griffin’ badging underneath the side turn signals. Using the mythical being within Saab’s corporate emblem for a long time, the use ‘Griffin’ name plates on the 9-3 comes as Saab appears to be deempathizing their crest for the simple ‘SAAB’ badge. Griffin also charges the new Saab 9-3 with the auto company’s aircraft origin.

Given a styling refresh inside the 9-3 cabin, the new Saab interior continues to cater to aircraft cockpit-themed ergonomics and materials. A healthy dose of titanium metallic trim is tastefully applied on the dashboard panel, door panels and glove box. Leatherette upholstery is standard on base models while the Saab 9-3 Aero adds ribbed leather sports seats. Aero-trimmed models of the 2012 Saab 9-3 also features the use of graphite-fiber effects.

As many premium brands stride to challenge the BMW 3-Series as the industry benchmark, the new Saab 9-3 will be given an unique advantage to compete with this Bavarian auto giant. Influenced by the notion “if you can’t beat them, join them.”, Saab wasted little time in exploring non-General Motors automotive partnerships by brokering a deal for BMW technology. Said to be providing a turbocharged, 1.6 liter inline-4 engine earlier in literature, it appears the 2012 Saab 9-3 will be propelled by BMW’s new 2-liter, twin-scroll turbocharged powerplant. Adopted to specific standards for the Swedish automobiles, this new Saab 9-3 engine is rated to 163 and 220 horsepower depending on the model. Featuring a 4% gain in fuel economy, the new Saab 9-3 direct-injected gasoline engine will emit fewer C02 emissions than the previous model. European-marketed 2012 Saab 9-3 models will also receive a 1.9 liter twin-turbocharged diesel powerplants offered in output ranges of 130, 160 and 180 horsepower.

Other features available on the 2012 Saab 9-3 includes brand-new custom 17-inch and 18-inch wheels as well as the optional traction of the company’s XWD all-wheel drive system. The 2-liter gasoline powerplant can be mated with the 9-3 XWD models. The ability to burn E85 fuel will also be equipped on the gasoline Saab 9-3 variants.

Proving as resilient as the Scandinavian spirit during within the harsh cold of European winters, Saab Automobiles 2012 lineup will relish a completely refreshed vehicle lineup just over a year following the company’s restructuring under Spyker Cars. At the Toronto car show press conference, John Anderson proudly boasted how the Saab 9-5 (newly introduced for the 2011 model year) will be the oldest vehicle in the reinvented Swedish brand.

Information and photo source: Saab Automobiles

Related posts:

Spyker & Saab CEOs To Run 57 Saab 93 In Mille Miglia

Saab PheoniX Concept Shows Future of Saab Design

Saab Releases 9-5 SportCombi Photos

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts
