2012 marks the 15th year since the Toyota Prius began its effort to champion the future of motoring. A unique automotive legend would start in late 1997 as the concept of an electric motor supporting a gasoline engine entered production for the Japanese marketplace. Premiering in a very niche market of gasoline-electric vehicles that did not exist, Toyota brought the Prius to North American in 2001. After long attempting the attract a market, the market came to the Toyota Prius when rising fuel prices and the culture of environmentalism erupted in the United States. With other Toyota and Lexus products incorporating the same powertrain configuration trademarked as Hybrid Synergy Drive, a series of milestones (including the 3-millionth Toyota hybrid vehicle produced last year) has earned unparallel praise for the Prius. At the 2011 North American International Auto Show, Toyota’s spot to expand the Prius to a new family of vehicles represented a moment that firmly sent a message to those who opposed gasoline-electric hybrid motoring.

Debuting in production form at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the subcompact Toyota Prius c is launching this year as a hybrid for the younger, first-time new car buyer. Promising average fuel economy of 50 miles per gallon, the Prius c will be the most efficient vehicle sold in the United States powered primarily by gasoline. Set to provide a generous standard equipment vehicle featuring automatic climate control, vehicle stability control, Smart Stop Technology and Bluetooth hands-free with every 2012 Prius c, Toyota has announced pricing for the new economy car will start just under $19,000.

Arriving to showrooms in four trim levels (One, Two, Three and Four), the 2012 Toyota Prius c One will cost a thrifty $18,950. As the basic model, the Prius One offers remote keyless entry and a tilt-telescoping steering column. For an extra $950, buyers of the Toyota Prius c can upgrade to the Two trim level. A six-speaker stereo, cargo tonneau cover and cruise control are highlight features for the Prius c Two that is priced just below $20,000 less taxes, delivery and other dealership costs. At a $21,635 price point, the 2012 Prius c progresses with a standard stash of electronic goodies under the Three trim level. HD Radio, Sirius XM Satellite Radio and Toyota’s Entune system featuring a 6.1-inch touchscreen is key features for the Prius c Three. At the highest end of the trim scale, the Toyota Prius c Four comes with all of the top features from the previous trim level but also adds heated front seats and heated mirror with turn signals. The 2012 Toyota Prius c Four will be well equipped for $23,230 with options such as moonroof and 16-inch wheels.

Since its debut, the Toyota Prius has begun throwing cold water on sceptics of the advanced gasoline-electric vehicles. Disputing many aspects of hybrid vehicles, one of the main critical points regarded the technology’s cost-effectiveness. Since the Toyota Prius was a hybrid-only offering, other cars such as the Toyota Camry and Honda Civic showed hybrid powertrains have resulted in a several thousand-dollar price premium over conventional gasoline-only vehicles. With many analysts doing the math early on hybrid vehicles, it was believed that many owners of electric-assisted cars would never experience enough savings in fuel to warrant spending extra for the hybrid electric hardware. Thanks to Toyota’s environmentally friendly work with hybrid powertrains, the business case for electric assistance in motoring has become an economical choice. While the Toyota Prius c will not be the cheapest hybrid car available (the 2012 Honda Insight retails at $18,350), the 50-mile per gallon economy hatchback will be in position to influence even entry-level car buyers.

When the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf premiered on the auto show circuit, crowds once surrounding these electrified vehicles as marvels of engineering were later repelled by near obscene vehicle prices. The release of the 2012 Toyota Prius c will be a welcomed change in perception for electric-assisted vehicles.

Looking at Kia’s lineup and its clear it is one for those who don’t want to blend in. Bold, sharp designs that make you love them or hate them. Hyundai’s fluid styling is less polarizing. The Soul is one of those polarizing cars, but what you can’t really deny is its coolness factor. We can’t help but think of the hamsters when we see it either. Now there’s the mark of a successful advertising campaign…..

At Chicago Kia is either offering us a preview of the next Soul (which is a way out) or a new sports model. Lets hope it is the former. As far as funky small coupes go, Hyundai has the Veloster. Kia is left without one, selling the more mainstream Koup. Ditching the four-door layout of the Soul, the Track’ster is, as its name implies, designed for the track in mind.

A track-going Soul might have been a laughable thought, but the Track’ster is unlike any Soul you’ve ever seen. Under the hood is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making 250 horsepower. Instead of front-wheel drive, the Track’ster puts power to the wheels through an all-wheel drive system. Its pretty much the concept of a hot hatch and one that has styling win written all over it. The Track’ster is low to the ground and decked out in a white and red color scheme.

The roof is painted in red, and it slants downward to the meet up with the rear C-pillar. It conveys motion, and still should offer a nice amount of headroom back there – if there was a seat that is. For the concept, there isn’t. Instead, the Track’ster has a shelf that is meant for racing gear like suits, helmets, tools and the like.

So is this production or a dream entry? Who knows, it isn’t clear with the Track’ster like it is with most concepts. WIth Hyundai having the Veloster though we think it is a distinct possibility. As for us, we give a resounding yes to whether or not it should be produced. From a styling and packaging perspective we’d rather have this than a MINI Cooper or Fiat 500. We bet it would cost a whole lot less too. Kia design is on a roll!

Last month Acura previewed major changes to its lineup. The NSX Concept was no doubt Acura’s main event, and one of the stars of the show. Overall though, the new supercar is a deviation from the strategy that the brand is pursuing. Acura hopes the NSX effect will trickle down, but at the show the ILX Concept was the most important debut, showing off a change in approach for the brand.

Instead of trying to take it to Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, Acura is repositioning as a more near-luxury brand, going against Buick and Lexus. Its a space that Acura has always found success in in the past. Why not return to it now? The ILX is a return to that. The ILX Concept we really liked at the North American International Auto Show is barely different here; that car was a concept in name only. The ILX’s style is crisp and youthful, with some very nice lines and surfacing.

It is a genuinely good-looking car, and that is something we have been hard pressed to say about any Acuras of late. This design has had us hopeful about Acura’s future. While the ILX is Civic based, you would never know it. The interior is where the problem begins….

It doesn’t feel special enough; we’re getting Civic vibes. That’s unfortunate, given that the Civic’s interior isn’t even impressive for its segment. That isn’t to say the ILX doesn’t Acura-ify things up; it does. Instead of being canted slightly toward the driver, the center stack is vertical and upright. It follows the Acura design motif of a thin swoopy head unit integrated into the center stack. There is also a new navigation system setup mounted in the upper dash. Nice, but a definite win for the Buick Verano in the interior.

Under the hood there are three engine options. The standard engine is a 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder making 150 horsepower. The top-shelf engine is 201 horsepower 2.4-liter unit mated to a six-speed manual. The fuel economy leader is Acura’s first hybrid, a Integrated Motor Assist setup combined with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder making 11 horsepower. Acura estimates it will get 35 mpg city/38 mpg highway. The ILX is making a play for first-time luxury buyers in their 20s and 30s. With competitive pricing and based on the looks alone, it should do better than most Acuras in recent memory. It’s just too bad they didn’t bring their A-game in the interior.

The Hyundai Genesis Coupe is a very cool car. Mainly for a younger crowd, the Coupe gives us the quintessential sports-car layout: front-engine, rear-wheel-drive (FR,) on a lightweight, fun-to-drive platform for a measly $23,000 (starting price.) And what do nearly all import tuners do with an FR layout sports car? Well, they drop in a humongous LS1 V8 from a Corvette, of course.

We originally saw this car at the 2011 SEMA Show in Las Vegas last November. And now it’s for sale – for only $45,000.

Mated to a Magnusun Roots Style Supercharger and T56 Manual Transmission (used in everything from a Dodge Viper to the Aston Martin V12 Vanquish,) this bad boy puts out somewhere around 560 hp to the wheels. Yes, that’s ridiculously fast.

Of course, more than just the engine and transmission were modified to achieve this sort of power. The builders, Enjuku Racing, also installed and replaced all sorts of internals, modified the suspension to BC Racing Coilovers, added a Quaife LSD, BC Racing Wheels, a Wilwood 14″ Front Big Brake Kit to slow all that momentum, SPEC Stage 1 Clutch & Flywheel, ISIS Performance Race Exhaust, Custom headers, Hurst Short shifter, Sparco racing seats, a Carbon Fiber body kit (including the hood, trunk, lip, and roof skin,) and plenty of other minor goodies to make the car safe to drive.

The parts total: $51,000 alone. You can buy the car without the supercharger, but why would you want to? Either way, Enjuku Racing will dyno and tune the car for you upon purchase.

This past decade, in-car infotainment electronics has evolved from a multi-disc CD charger and the occasional rear-seat DVD viewing system to a level of innovation once thought of as absurd. Satellite radio, electronic GPS guidance and even wireless Internet connections on several luxury products provide a mere tip of the iceberg to what is currently available to vehicle occupants.

An exhibition that coincided with the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas provided a spotlight on all things high technology. Countless tablet computers, WiFi digital cameras and smartphones were the common spectacle of future electronics. Tempering with the usual balance of the CES in Las Vegas, representatives for the 20th century’s most pivotal invention (the automobile), brought some cutting-edge solutions for the 21st century’s demanding mobile technology world. In fact, Ford Motor Company took an innovation award away from the 2012 CES for their latest MyFord Mobile App.

On several occasions during the 2012 technology show in Las Vegas, a term began to swirl over automotive company products at a higher frequency than ever. The use of the term “The Cloud” was inserted into the presentation of several devices for the future of automotive infotainment. Instead of storing electronic programs and files on a physical hard drive or disk, information is stored through a virtual space called the “cloud”. As in-car electronic systems (most notably navigation services) progressed from the use of DVDs to hard drives that well surpasses many tablet PCs, the venture to the cloud for auto equipment manufacturers means limitless possibilities. The introduction of cloud computing principles have grown most prevalently with the popular navigation program called Google Maps employed on systems including the Ford SYNC and Audi MMI. Unlike previous GPS systems that either stored limited information or require time-consuming updates through a home computer, Google Maps uses a cloud interface to calculate routes. At the recent 2012 CES exhibition, auto companies are certainly becoming wiser to high-flying cloud computing ideals.

Making use of the open world of the cloud, Mercedes-Benz unveiled an upgraded version of their mbrace telematics suite of security and comfort connectivity features set for introduction starting the new SL roadster in the 2013 model year. An enhanced service, mbrace2 expands its reach in providing Mercedes-Benz occupants with a richer, even more connected electronic experience. Facebook, Yelp and Google Local Search are some Apps users of mbrace2 can expect immediately. Based on a cloud-based system, the mbrace2 system can be easily and conveniently updated allowing for delivery of an even greater selection of Apps in the future. The one necessity of cloud computing is a constant wireless connection. For the Mercedes-Benz mbrace2 system, Verizon will provide the subscribed service as it rolls out early this year.

With much of the auto sector devoted to the development of exclusive in-car infotainment solutions (i.e. MyFord Touch, Cadillac CUE, and Kia UVO), the outside stereo and car entertainment suppliers appear to have lost leverage on the marketplace. Other than the units created in-house or through partnerships, Aha by HARMAN have been making some serious inroads on the automotive infotainment market utilizing a cloud-platform. Launched as an iPhone App in 2009 as Aha Mobile, the web-based platform delivers an array of interactive products. Internet radio, navigation-related information, as well as audio dictation of Facebook and Twitter messaging is obtained through the Aha Mobile App that will also soon be joining the Android device marketplace. While Pioneer introduced the first automotive stereo system to incorporate Aha by HARMAN technology, the growth of the brand depends on forging relationships with the automakers.

During the 2012 CES, Subaru and Honda will be the first OEM deployment of Aha by HARMAN technology in the North American market. Demonstrated on a 2013 Subaru BRZ sports car at the 2012 CES exhibition in Las Vegas, the vehicle presented the new web-based entertainment options available through Aha by HARMAN. In the case of Subaru, customers can expect Aha by HARMAN to become part of what will be a “fourth band” of car radio joining AM, FM and satellite radio options on future vehicles.

Cloud computing principles will most definitely affect the evolution of an already growing market for in-car infotainment electronics. Late in 2011, Ford announced a brand-new MyFord Touch infotainment suite for their upcoming 2013 model year vehicles. As they outfit future products with the new in-car system, previous owners of Ford products featuring the first-generation MyFord Touch are being provided with an upgrade through a USB stick. While not a terribly labour intensive task, cloud computing solutions in automobiles would allow updates and improvements to be conducted near seamlessly.

For automotive consumers, cloud computing could unveil a reality where a car or truck could feature the same technological flexibility as an Apple iPad. Numerous Apps, limitless music and media storage, the most current road maps possible as well as effortless data sharing are advantages cloud-based vehicles can provide. Along with the expansive abilities of cloud-based in-car technology, new features such as voice recognition can be modified through software upgrades allowing motorists to immediately experience the advancements of technology (no longer a prize reserved for the purchaser of the newest vehicle). Among the only possible downside could be privacy and security of cloud-based systems. While all automotive uses of cloud computing engages methods to properly protect information, the future is as wide open as the cloud network for debate on this very accessible data.

The cloud computing integration with automobiles could also mean a buyer trading in their vehicle can take more than the custom floor mats and the air freshener with them to the next automotive upgrade. Contingent on the fact a buyer stays with a single auto manufacturer (at least for the time being), it will be highly likely all unique Apps and set-up information can be seamlessly passed to the next vehicle.

As one of the most important auto shows of the year takes place in Detroit, the need for brands to create a meaningful impression on the forward-thinking automotive market is paramount. For at least one company, their work in acquainting customers to once advanced producted started a week earlier. Prior to showcasing this year’s automotive innovations, General Motors brand Chevrolet had issued an important remedy the 2011 North American International Auto Show‘s Car of the Year, the Chevrolet Volt.

Currently the only plug-in hybrid vehicle in the United States marketplace, the Chevrolet Volt was put under investigation last year by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in regards to a battery fire risk. Originating from a fire at the vehicle holding area of the NHTSA, the cause was linked to a Chevrolet Volt that was administered a side-impact pole test weeks before. It was assessed that a coolant link caused by a broken line led to the overheating and sparking o lithium-ion battery pack. In November of 2011, the NHTSA announced they had recreated the fire under lab conditions using the identical perimeters that caused the June fire.

Just in time to save General Motors’ corporate assembly in Detroit some headaches of having to answer repeated questions on the Chevrolet Volt’s post-crash fire risk, the company’s engineering team provided a multi-prong fix for the car. The first solution is to construct a more comprehensive structural assembly around the Volt’s battery pack. Second and third modifications strengthening the Volt plug-in hybrid focuses on the battery’s cooling system. A new sensor will be added to the battery cooling supply to monitor fluid levels. Finally, a temper-resistant bracket is added to the battery coolant reservoir of the Chevrolet Volt protecting against the potential of coolant fluid overfill.

Quick to resolve the problem, the new modifications to Volt’s electrical powertrain hardware has already been tested. Four Chevrolet Volts featuring the enhanced crash protection were crash tested through the month of December. With no coolant leak or fires erupting from the collision aftermath, General Motors is confident they have successfully resolved the issue.

Chevrolet Volt owners will be notified individually about the new safety enhancements available for their vehicle in the coming weeks. Since late November, Volt owners were offered use of a ‘loaner’ car if they felt unsafe driving their plug-in hybrid.

In 2007, General Motors shocked automotive journalists and enthusiasts with a perspective of plug-in hybrid driving through debut of the Chevrolet Volt Concept at the North American International Auto Show. Shortly after the conceptual design made headlines in many publications of that time, a production version of the Chevrolet Volt becoming the world’s first plug-in electric/gasoline plug-in hybrid from a major automaker. Spending what seemed to be an eternity on the car show circuit, the Chevrolet Volt’s debut came with the accolades including the 2011 Car of the Year at the North American International Auto Show.

Enduring the Chevrolet Volt’s first challenge as the vehicle launches into wide release throughout the United States and Canada this year, the fire concern has much to do about the continuing learning process behind advanced powertrains entering production cars. As new players like the 2013 Ford Fusion Energi and the Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid approaches the marketplace in the next 12 months, the Volt will count on its head-start from the showroom as an advantage.

Debuting the New Beetle concept at the North American International Auto Show back in 1994, Volkswagen either has a special place in its corporate heart for Detroit or realizes the automotive exhibit is the location to show up the leading American automakers. With intrigue building for what automakers had in store for the auto show, Volkswagen entered with a certain degree of stealth. Without drawing too much attention or tempting to auto press with tidbits of information, the German-badged car company presented a product important to compete with the current North American family sedan market. Only Volkswagen’s second production hybrid vehicle, the 2013 Jetta will feature an electric-assisted model.

Drawing down their price for the sixth-generation model, the Volkswagen Jetta sedan succeeded to capture a larger piece of the four-door vehicle segment in 2011. In association with value, space, equipment and safety, a modern sedan sold in the United States appears to require a hybrid variation. The 2012 Toyota Camry and Kia Optima come with hybrid options while the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco will receive the ‘mild hybrid’ equipment categorized as eAssist technology. Unveiled at the very same 2012 North American International Auto Show, the 2013 Ford Fusion elevated the bar in electric-assisted motoring providing both a common hybrid as well as the Energi plug-in hybrid. The Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid sedan will give the German auto company a chance to more deeply embed themselves with the American automotive culture.

Though the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid is assembled within the same four-door frame as the convention Jetta, the gasoline/electric powertrain running at slow speeds will give the first defining clue to some drastic mechanical technology. For speeds up to 37 miles per hour, the Volkswagen Jetta launches on electric only power for a distance up to 1.3 miles. Automatically configured for the all-electric travel, a driver can decouple the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid’s gasoline engine for additional zero emission power up to 44 miles per hour by pressing the E-mode button on the vehicle’s dash panel. Capable of 0 to 60 miles per hour acceleration runs in under 9 seconds, the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid is also engineered to save fuel at highway speeds. For speeds up to 84 miles per hour, the Jetta Hybrid will detect when the accelerator pedal has been disengaged. Once detected, the TSI engine will be disconnected via the decoupling clutch allowing the sedan to truly coast.

Volkswagen has admitted the final fuel economy numbers for the Jetta Hybrid will need to be verified by the EPA. Estimates from the auto manufacturer places the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid fuel miles at 45 miles per gallon through combined city and highway driving.

The occupants inside of the Jetta Hybrid will comfortably accept the same level of comfort and features in this sedan as they would in the gasoline or Jetta TDI model. Along with the planning to generating, storing and releasing the electrical energy, the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid incorporates safety built into their advanced powertrain. The climate-controlled lithium-ion battery pack operates on systems that are designed to disconnect the electrical storage in non-use or in case of an accident. Automakers are quickly learning the need to develop safety technology inclined with the needs of electric vehicles.

If awaiting the arrival of the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid in the United States and Canada, the first cars will be delivered to customers by November of 2012. Interesting enough, the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid appears only planned for the North American market for the immediate future. With no considerations for the European markets such as the United Kingdom, Volkswagen will continue to rely on that region’s preference to diesel engines the net near identical fuel mileage.

This year’s North American International Auto Show is in full swing, and it is one of the best auto shows we’ve seen in a long time. So many debuts are going on, pivotal new vehicles for their manufacturers. And you know what else?

There has been very few leaks ahead of time – making it even more exciting. This morning Chevrolet has debuted two new concepts aimed squarely at the youth market. They are the Code 130R and Tru 140S, each aimed at offering enthusiasts an small, engaging performance offering. They are designed to compete with cars like the new Scion FR-S and each has an entirely different approaches in doing that. We’ll start with the 130R.

The 130R is a rear-wheel drive offering, which makes us excited. It is powered by a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder working in concert with an eAssist mild hybrid system. The setup makes 150 horsepower and 148 pound feet of torque. Given its weight, that wouldn’t provide bad performance. Stylistically, the 130R has retro proportions, with an upright design and aggressive front end.

It somehow manages to be a bit throwback. Anyhow, we love it – and more than the styling, just the concept and confidence behind it. Underneath the car could be a mainstream version of the Alpha platform that underpins the Cadillac ATS – General Motors isn’t saying anything about that though. Inexpensive, rear-wheel drive and fun – we like the sounds of that!

The 140S is very modern in its styling, with a low-slung, cab forward design that is somewhat like the most recent Mitsubishi Eclipse. Better though, definitely better. The 140S has muscular lines, and elongated doors.

It is very dramatic, and the 140S seems to be the styling favorite of the two concepts. Funnily enough, underneath the 140S is based on the Delta platform underpinning the Cruze. This is the Cruze coupe everyone has been wanting – and its a whole lot better than Cruze sans two-doors. We’re glad to see Chevrolet making an effort, and we could really see this car doing well if it is produced.

Remember what we said about same targets, different approaches? Well the 140S has the same engine setup, making 10 more hp. In addition, it would be priced at the same point – about $25,000 – if produced.

We think they need to pull the trigger with both of them, but if one is more likely to get the green light it would have to be the 140S. No doubt about it, Chevy is back folks. These concepts are proof the brand is reaching out to enthusiasts and the youth market with new models. Green light! Check them both out in our gallery below and decide which one is your favorite.

After the magnificent display that was the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, I wrote an article on the notion that the California coast was the place automakers preferred to display their latest creations and concepts. Wondering if the 2012 auto show in Detroit would be have the same amount of enthusiasm, the sensory overload-inducing debuts set to occur at this week’s opening of the North American International Auto Show leads me to concludes thoughts of the Motor City becoming less of an industry focal point seems a waste of mental energy. The biggest auto manufacturers of the United States, Japan, Europe and even India are expected to provide an automotive delight.

Whether they want to unveil the entire full image of the vehicle or a mere teaser photo, the auto companies are careful in their attempts to grab the attention of media and the overall car-adoring public.

For the 2012 edition of the North American International Auto Show, the following is a few of the production-based 2013 model year vehicles making a world debut:

Toyota Prius c

The smallest member of the now established Prius hybrid family, Toyota plans to capitalize on the high efficiency small car market with what will become North America’s first subcompact gasoline-electric vehicle. Roughly 5 inches longer than the 2012 Yaris, the Toyota Prius c liftback body style is a careful execution of small car values with high technology.

Conforming to the Dodge brand identity, the Dart will be aggressively styled with touches found on the new Dodge Charger. Mechanicals for the 2013 Dodge Dart is likely to include a 1.4 liter and 2-liter engine with an available 9-speed automatic transmission.

The smallest vehicle in a brand line-up, the 2013 Dodge Dart will perhaps face the fiercest fight in the modern car industry. Ford Fiesta, Chevy Sonic, Hyundai Accent and Toyota Yaris have either new or redesigned products each providing competitive powertrains, standard equipment and fuel economy.

Nissan Pathfinder Concept

Nissan’s most enduring SUV (sport utility vehicle) brand, the Pathfinder lived up to its name since debuting in 1986. In constant production since introduction, the Nissan Pathfinder’s ability to connect with the North American consumer led the Japan-derived brand to share the Pathfinder name briefly with the large Amanda SUV. Rolling out at the 2012 North American International Auto Show as a concept vehicle, the exterior design for Nissan’s latest generation of the Pathfinder should remain close to the production model set for release later this year.

A four-wheel drive set to offer seating for seven passengers, the Nissan Pathfinder Concept will feature a refreshed exterior design. A more aerodynamic look than the predecessor model, the teaser photo of the Pathfinder Concept unveils a roof similar to the Nissan Quest minivan and body panels featuring aggressive flaring like the Juke. Buyers of the next generation Nissan Pathfinder should feel confident that the powerplant options should consist of the VQ series six-cylinder and the VK series eight-cylinder engine.

Users of Facebook will be some of the first observers to see the Nissan Pathfinder Concept. After 8:30am on Monday, Facebook users who log into the Nissan page will be able to view the new vehicle after clicking on the “Pathfinder Reveal” tab.

In the early part of the 2000s, Lexus was the revered luxury automobile benchmark winning over customers with premium comfort and technology. However, the past several years have seen the Toyota-backed luxury car division fall from good graces. Following the release of 2011 United States sale results, the Lexus brand continues a descent downward in their reputation for modern luxury car prestige. Selling 198,552 vehicles total in 2011, Lexus saw its unit sales drop by roughly 14.5 percent over 2010. An even more troubling for Lexus cars and crossover vehicles is the sale losses compared to the 2007 calendar year. Distressing for their passenger cars, Lexus has seen their product demand plunge almost by one-half to 101,181. Despite the debut of a redesigned GX 460 and two new cars debuting for 2012 model year (the CT 200h and the GS 350), the passion in the Lexus division is still lacking in a competitive luxury car market.

A reputation damaged by the Toyota company’s accelerator issue of 2009, Lexus also lost favour with luxury car buyers with questionable new vehicle styling. Looking for chance to gain enthusiasm for the luxury division, the purebred supercar Lexus LFA vaulted the stylized ‘L’ badge to the front covers of many auto magazines. Produced for a limited run of 500 vehicles at an American list price of over $375,000, the 552-horsepower LFA has little chance to provide a sizable billboard to Lexus’ brand vehicles.

When the Lexus LF-LC hybrid sports coupe concept debuts physically, there will be a lot of attention on the other innovations brought forward in the design study. In the time that will follow the 2012 North American International Auto Show, it will be interesting to see how Lexus adapts the lessons gained in the LF-LC concept.

Next year’s North American International Auto Show looks like it will be hosting a lot of exciting launches. The show begins in just a few weeks; after New Years we should see some heavy leaking of launches prior to the show.

Lexus and Acura are both slated to bring coupe concepts, providing an interesting contrast at the two cars. Lexus has already released a teaser image of the headlight area of their as-yet-unnamed concept. It appears to be a very aggressive design for Lexus, using more surfacing and aggressive themes than ever. Lexus is heralding it as a vision for the future of the brand. Still, it is a concept, not a production vehicle. Some were disappointed at the watered-down production GS.

It isn’t clear is if the concept coupe is just a design study or if it previews a production car. The SC430 is the only remotely similar thing Lexus has offered in recent years, and it is a lackluster product that has been in need of replacement for a long time.

The interior of the concept looks exquisitely crafted from the image. There is a lounge-like design making use of large swaths of leather and wood panels. While we’ve yet to see the rest of the inside, what is there looks gorgeous. Hopefully its an indication of what is in store for future Lexus models.

Exterior design is where Lexus needs to focus on though, especially if it intends to attract a younger audience. IS is our favorite Lexus, but we think it could use a dose of aggressiveness next time around. Due to its target market, Lexus is likely to be more daring with that car than say the ES, LS or even the recently-introduced GS. Maybe this concept will offer an indication of what to expect. Its long-running United States crown taken, recent moves indicate that Lexus is preparing a new market offensive. Stiff competition is always good for buyers, who have a better selection of top-notch vehicles to choose from than ever.

When the 2010 Paris Motor Show presented the global car media the first conceptual look of the Chevrolet Sonic subcompact, the intent was to condense the performance feeling of the Camaro or Corvette in a smaller package. To sell the sportier ambitions for Chevrolet, the exhibition car was named the Aveo RS Concept. To be presented at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the 2013 Sonic production car will dazzle with ‘RS’ badging in thrilling performance style.

Infused with a similar vibe as the 2011 SEMA Show cars, the Chevrolet Sonic RS is the awaited model observers expected to add some aggression to the subcompact. However, the electric Nissan Leaf’s production in Japan slowed the distribution of the very hot new vehicle.

While Japanese auto companies returned to normality over the summer of 2011 in the production of vehicles, the effects of the earthquake and tsunami left these companies in-line with their national community. Five of the major Japanese auto manufacturers immediately donated the equivalent of over 13 million dollars US of aid on top of other provisions including blankets, generators and forklifts. The most eagerly awaited since the partnership between Subaru and Toyota was forged in 2006, a development process creating a pair of entry-level sports cars evoked attention of both brand customers. Since October of 2009, the concept Toyota FT-86 made a strong indication for what Japanese motoring fans can expect from the anticipated sport vehicle. Presented as the BRZ STI Concept at locales including the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, the production Subaru sports car was finally introduced for this year’s Tokyo Motor Show.

Debuting at the same time show that the Toyota GT-86 (to be known as the Scion FR-S in North American), the Subaru BRZ two-door, 2+2 sports car is a bold presentation for the Japanese auto badge that had resisted this personal performance vehicle category for many years.

At a distance, the ability to distract the exterior differences between the Toyota and Subaru vehicles will only come easy to an astute automotive observer. Appearing very close to the concept version of the BRZ, the production sport car’s mature Subaru details are detected on the lower front fascia that includes a hexagon grille and distinctive fog light housings. Detectable ahead of the cabin doors are chrome, stylized side louvers. Just 170 inches in total length, the Subaru BRZ is 4 inches shorter than a Scion tC but 2.8 inches longer than the Nissan 370Z sports car. Weighing less than 2,700 pounds, the low, sleek look for the Subaru BRZ is intentional to foster a fun to drive, sporty feel. A set of 17-inch aluminum wheels are wrapped with the rubber of competent performance tires.

Compared to the vehicle that Americans will know as the Scion FR-S, the Subaru’s interior is likely going to be a slightly more upscale look. Driver-oriented, the BRZ’s tachometer with digital speedometer is planted in the center of the gauge cluster. Powered by a horizontally-opposed 2-liter boxer engine, the traditional Subaru engine design is reinforced by Toyota’s expertise in technology that includes direct injection. Cleverly positioned to optimize the lowest center of gravity possible, 200 horsepower and 151 pounds-feet of torque will be pumping from the BRZ’s boxer powerplant. Not incredibly peppy in torque development, the Subaru BRZ’s engine be companioned with a pair of transmissions insuring firm and smooth delivery. Certain to entice the sport compact crowd will be testing the performance limits of the Subaru BRZ is the six-speed manual gearbox designed for short stroke shifting. For drivers preferring a more relaxed experience behind the wheel, the BRZ will become the first North American release of a 6-speed automatic transmission on a Subaru. Selecting ‘M’ mode on the automatic will allow manual shifting of the Subaru BRZ sports car through the automatic transmission.

With introduction to the marketplace planned in spring of 2012, there are already rumoured plans relating to the two-door Subaru offering. Plans of adding Impreza WRX-style turbocharged power to the BRZ is believed to be on the tables for the next model year. Horsepower estimates for a turbocharged Subaru BRZ is around the 300 range. Prior to the Subaru BRZ sports car’s official presentation in Tokyo, some speculation had also insisted on all-wheel drive as a possibility. Thought to be a way of differentiating the Subaru version apart from the Toyota sports car, the production BRZ will arrive only as a rear-wheel drive.

For Subaru, the BRZ marks the brand’s first homecoming to the true sport car market since the discontinuation of the SVX in 1997. Accompanied by a drop in customer demand in its final year of production, the fact Subaru ended up producing their halo vehicle at a financial loss left the appearance of a sports coupe successor understandably off the books for the Japanese auto company.

Perhaps learning a lesson from the SVX, the Subaru BRZ joint construction with Toyota Motor Corporation assured financial violability retuning to the sports car marketplace. Estimated to have a starting cost below $30,000, the Subaru BRZ will be seen as a competitive entrant to a going sector of small sports coupes that includes the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Mazda MX-5 and MINI Coupe.
