A unique automotive legend would start in late 1997 as the concept of an electric motor supporting a gasoline engine entered production for the Japanese marketplace. Premiering in a very niche market of gasoline-electric vehicles that did not exist, Toyota brought the Prius to North American in 2001. As the basic model, the Prius One offers remote keyless entry and a tilt-telescoping steering column. For an extra $950, buyers of the Toyota Prius c can upgrade to the Two trim level. A six-speaker stereo, cargo tonneau cover and cruise control are highlight features for the Prius c Two that is priced just below $20,000 less taxes, delivery and other dealership costs. At a $21,635 price point, the 2012 Prius c progresses with a standard stash of electronic goodies under the Three trim level. HD Radio, Sirius XM Satellite Radio and Toyota’s Entune system featuring a 6.1-inch touchscreen is key features for the Prius c Three. At the highest end of the trim scale, the Toyota Prius c Four comes with all of the top features from the previous trim level but also adds heated front seats and heated mirror with turn signals. The 2012 Toyota Prius c Four will be well equipped for $23,230 with options such as moonroof and 16-inch wheels.

Since its debut, the Toyota Prius has begun throwing cold water on sceptics of the advanced gasoline-electric vehicles. Disputing many aspects of hybrid vehicles, one of the main critical points regarded the technology’s cost-effectiveness. Since the Toyota Prius was a hybrid-only offering, other cars such as the Toyota Camry and Honda Civic showed hybrid powertrains have resulted in a several thousand-dollar price premium over conventional gasoline-only vehicles. As one of the most important auto shows of the year takes place in Detroit, the need for brands to create a meaningful impression on the forward-thinking automotive market is paramount. For at least one company, their work in acquainting customers to once advanced producted started a week earlier. Prior to showcasing this year’s automotive innovations, General Motors brand Chevrolet had issued an important remedy the 2011 North American International Auto Show‘s Car of the Year, the Chevrolet Volt.

Currently the only plug-in hybrid vehicle in the United States marketplace, the Chevrolet Volt was put under investigation last year by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in regards to a battery fire risk. Originating from a fire at the vehicle holding area of the NHTSA, the cause was linked to a Chevrolet Volt that was administered a side-impact pole test weeks before. It was assessed that a coolant link caused by a broken line led to the overheating and sparking o lithium-ion battery pack. In November of 2011, the NHTSA announced they had recreated the fire under lab conditions using the identical perimeters that caused the June fire.

Just in time to save General Motors’ corporate assembly in Detroit some headaches of having to answer repeated questions on the Chevrolet Volt’s post-crash fire risk, the company’s engineering team provided a multi-prong fix for the car. The first solution is to construct a more comprehensive structural assembly around the Volt’s battery pack. Second and third modifications strengthening the Volt plug-in hybrid focuses on the battery’s cooling system. A new sensor will be added to the battery cooling supply to monitor fluid levels. Finally, a temper-resistant bracket is added to the battery coolant reservoir of the Chevrolet Volt protecting against the potential of coolant fluid overfill.

Quick to resolve the problem, the new modifications to Volt’s electrical powertrain hardware has already been tested. Four Chevrolet Volts featuring the enhanced crash protection were crash tested through the month of December. With no coolant leak or fires erupting from the collision aftermath, General Motors is confident they have successfully resolved the issue.

Chevrolet Volt owners will be notified individually about the new safety enhancements available for their vehicle in the coming weeks. Since late November, Volt owners were offered use of a ‘loaner’ car if they felt unsafe driving their plug-in hybrid.

In 2007, General Motors shocked automotive journalists and enthusiasts with a perspective of plug-in hybrid driving through debut of the Chevrolet Volt Concept at the North American International Auto Show. Shortly after the conceptual design made headlines in many publications of that time, a production version of the Chevrolet Volt becoming the world’s first plug-in electric/gasoline plug-in hybrid from a major automaker. Spending what seemed to be an eternity on the car show circuit, the Chevrolet Volt’s debut came with the accolades including the 2011 Car of the Year at the North American International Auto Show.

Enduring the Chevrolet Volt’s first challenge as the vehicle launches into wide release throughout the United States and Canada this year, the fire concern has much to do about the continuing learning process behind advanced powertrains entering production cars. As new players like the 2013 Ford Fusion Energi and the Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid approaches the marketplace in the next 12 months, the Volt will count on its head-start from the showroom as an advantage.

The occupants inside of the Jetta Hybrid will comfortably accept the same level of comfort and features in this sedan as they would in the gasoline or Jetta TDI model. Along with the planning to generating, storing and releasing the electrical energy, the Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid incorporates safety built into their advanced powertrain. The climate-controlled lithium-ion battery pack operates on systems that are designed to disconnect the electrical storage in non-use or in case of an accident. Automakers are quickly learning the need to develop safety technology inclined with the needs of electric vehicles.

This year’s North American International Auto Show is in full swing, and it is one of the best auto shows we’ve seen in a long time. So many debuts are going on, pivotal new vehicles for their manufacturers. And you know what else?

There has been very few leaks ahead of time – making it even more exciting. This morning Chevrolet has debuted two new concepts aimed squarely at the youth market. They are the Code 130R and Tru 140S, each aimed at offering enthusiasts an small, engaging performance offering. They are designed to compete with cars like the new Scion FR-S and each has an entirely different approaches in doing that. We’ll start with the 130R.

The 130R is a rear-wheel drive offering, which makes us excited. It is powered by a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder working in concert with an eAssist mild hybrid system. The setup makes 150 horsepower and 148 pound feet of torque. Given its weight, that wouldn’t provide bad performance. Stylistically, the 130R has retro proportions, with an upright design and aggressive front end.

It somehow manages to be a bit throwback. Anyhow, we love it – and more than the styling, just the concept and confidence behind it. Underneath the car could be a mainstream version of the Alpha platform that underpins the Cadillac ATS – General Motors isn’t saying anything about that though. Inexpensive, rear-wheel drive and fun – we like the sounds of that!

The 140S is very modern in its styling, with a low-slung, cab forward design that is somewhat like the most recent Mitsubishi Eclipse. Better though, definitely better. The 140S has muscular lines, and elongated doors.

It is very dramatic, and the 140S seems to be the styling favorite of the two concepts. Funnily enough, underneath the 140S is based on the Delta platform underpinning the Cruze. This is the Cruze coupe everyone has been wanting – and its a whole lot better than Cruze sans two-doors. We’re glad to see Chevrolet making an effort, and we could really see this car doing well if it is produced.

Remember what we said about same targets, different approaches? Well the 140S has the same engine setup, making 10 more hp. In addition, it would be priced at the same point – about $25,000 – if produced.

We think they need to pull the trigger with both of them, but if one is more likely to get the green light it would have to be the 140S. No doubt about it, Chevy is back folks. These concepts are proof the brand is reaching out to enthusiasts and the youth market with new models. Green light! Check them both out in our gallery below and decide which one is your favorite.

Wondering if the 2012 auto show in Detroit would be have the same amount of enthusiasm, the sensory overload-inducing debuts set to occur at this week’s opening of the North American International Auto Show leads me to concludes thoughts of the Motor City becoming less of an industry focal point seems a waste of mental energy. The biggest auto manufacturers of the United States, Japan, Europe and even India are expected to provide an automotive delight.

Ahead of major auto shows, the marketing departments of carmakers are challenged to entice interest in a vehicle debut without giving too much away from the physical spectacle. Leading into the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, various tactics are being rolled out by auto brands. Whether they want to unveil the entire full image of the vehicle or a mere teaser photo, the auto companies are careful in their attempts to grab the attention of media and the overall car-adoring public.

For the 2012 edition of the North American International Auto Show, the following is a few of the production-based 2013 model year vehicles making a world debut:

Toyota Prius c

The smallest member of the now established Prius hybrid family, Toyota plans to capitalize on the high efficiency small car market with what will become North America’s first subcompact gasoline-electric vehicle. Roughly 5 inches longer than the 2012 Yaris, the Toyota Prius c liftback body style is a careful execution of small car values with high technology.

Beyond the Toyota Synergy Drive powertrain technology, the interior of the Prius c will incorporate an array of infotainment solutions thoughtful to the youth market the Japanese-based automaker wants to attract. One of the more compelling characteristics of the compact car is the use of an all-new rear wheel drive platform. Specifically aiming at the BMW 3-Series and the Mercedes-Benz C Class, the Cadillac ATS sedan will have a strong assortment of engine power to support what should be a fierce luxury car battle. To offer three powerplant choices, the 2013 ATS will offer a 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engine, the 3.6 liter V-6 already found on Cadillac products and a new 270-horsepower, turbocharged 2-liter engine to debut in the vehicle.

The 2013 Cadillac ATS will also feature available Magnetic Ride Control suspension and the brand’s latest CUE in-car infotainment system.

Ford Fusion

Conforming to the Dodge brand identity, the Dart will be aggressively styled with touches found on the new Dodge Charger. Mechanicals for the 2013 Dodge Dart is likely to include a 1.4 liter and 2-liter engine with an available 9-speed automatic transmission.

The smallest vehicle in a brand line-up, the 2013 Dodge Dart will perhaps face the fiercest fight in the modern car industry. Ford Fiesta, Chevy Sonic, Hyundai Accent and Toyota Yaris have either new or redesigned products each providing competitive powertrains, standard equipment and fuel economy.

Nissan Pathfinder Concept

Nissan’s most enduring SUV (sport utility vehicle) brand, the Pathfinder lived up to its name since debuting in 1986. In constant production since introduction, the Nissan Pathfinder’s ability to connect with the North American consumer led the Japan-derived brand to share the Pathfinder name briefly with the large Amanda SUV. Rolling out at the 2012 North American International Auto Show as a concept vehicle, the exterior design for Nissan’s latest generation of the Pathfinder should remain close to the production model set for release later this year.

A four-wheel drive set to offer seating for seven passengers, the Nissan Pathfinder Concept will feature a refreshed exterior design. A more aerodynamic look than the predecessor model, the teaser photo of the Pathfinder Concept unveils a roof similar to the Nissan Quest minivan and body panels featuring aggressive flaring like the Juke. Buyers of the next generation Nissan Pathfinder should feel confident that the powerplant options should consist of the VQ series six-cylinder and the VK series eight-cylinder engine.

In the early part of the 2000s, Lexus was the revered luxury automobile benchmark winning over customers with premium comfort and technology. However, the past several years have seen the Toyota-backed luxury car division fall from good graces. Following the release of 2011 United States sale results, the Lexus brand continues a descent downward in their reputation for modern luxury car prestige. Selling 198,552 vehicles total in 2011, Lexus saw its unit sales drop by roughly 14.5 percent over 2010. An even more troubling for Lexus cars and crossover vehicles is the sale losses compared to the 2007 calendar year. Distressing for their passenger cars, Lexus has seen their product demand plunge almost by one-half to 101,181. Despite the debut of a redesigned GX 460 and two new cars debuting for 2012 model year (the CT 200h and the GS 350), the passion in the Lexus division is still lacking in a competitive luxury car market.

A reputation damaged by the Toyota company’s accelerator issue of 2009, Lexus also lost favour with luxury car buyers with questionable new vehicle styling. Looking for chance to gain enthusiasm for the luxury division, the purebred supercar Lexus LFA vaulted the stylized ‘L’ badge to the front covers of many auto magazines. Produced for a limited run of 500 vehicles at an American list price of over $375,000, the 552-horsepower LFA has little chance to provide a sizable billboard to Lexus’ brand vehicles.

Presented in bright red, the Lexus LF-LC radiates a Ferrari-like silhouette. Sporty yet romance, the premium sport coupe LF-LC concept car wears a wide front end that emphasizes Lexus design cues in a most embellished manner. When the Lexus LF-LC hybrid sports coupe concept debuts physically, there will be a lot of attention on the other innovations brought forward in the design study. In the time that will follow the 2012 North American International Auto Show, it will be interesting to see how Lexus adapts the lessons gained in the LF-LC concept.

Next year’s North American International Auto Show looks like it will be hosting a lot of exciting launches. The show begins in just a few weeks; after New Years we should see some heavy leaking of launches prior to the show.

Lexus and Acura are both slated to bring coupe concepts, providing an interesting contrast at the two cars. Lexus has already released a teaser image of the headlight area of their as-yet-unnamed concept. It appears to be a very aggressive design for Lexus, using more surfacing and aggressive themes than ever. Lexus is heralding it as a vision for the future of the brand. Still, it is a concept, not a production vehicle. Some were disappointed at the watered-down production GS.

It isn’t clear is if the concept coupe is just a design study or if it previews a production car. The SC430 is the only remotely similar thing Lexus has offered in recent years, and it is a lackluster product that has been in need of replacement for a long time.

The interior of the concept looks exquisitely crafted from the image. There is a lounge-like design making use of large swaths of leather and wood panels. While we’ve yet to see the rest of the inside, what is there looks gorgeous. Hopefully its an indication of what is in store for future Lexus models.

Exterior design is where Lexus needs to focus on though, especially if it intends to attract a younger audience. IS is our favorite Lexus, but we think it could use a dose of aggressiveness next time around. Due to its target market, Lexus is likely to be more daring with that car than say the ES, LS or even the recently-introduced GS. Maybe this concept will offer an indication of what to expect. Its long-running United States crown taken, recent moves indicate that Lexus is preparing a new market offensive. Stiff competition is always good for buyers, who have a better selection of top-notch vehicles to choose from than ever.

When Chevrolet committed to replace the Korean-built Aveo with the 2012 Sonic, the bowtie brand immediately asserted the new small vehicle would be an enthusiastic entry.

When the 2010 Paris Motor Show presented the global car media the first conceptual look of the Chevrolet Sonic subcompact, the intent was to condense the performance feeling of the Camaro or Corvette in a smaller package. To sell the sportier ambitions for Chevrolet, the exhibition car was named the Aveo RS Concept. To be presented at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the 2013 Sonic production car will dazzle with ‘RS’ badging in thrilling performance style.

Infused with a similar vibe as the 2011 SEMA Show cars, the Chevrolet Sonic RS is the awaited model observers expected to add some aggression to the subcompact. Offered both as a four-door sedan and five-door hatchback body style, the upcoming Chevrolet Sonic RS trim level ups the youthful appearance ante. The 2013 Sonic RS wears unique bodywork that includes special front and rear fascia as well as side rocker panel moldings. On the front, the 2013 Chevy Sonic RS subcompact’s dynamic-looking fog lamps fixtures shine the roadways. A new exterior colour being introduced for the 2013 Sonic RS (along with other Sonic models) is Black Granite Metallic. The Black Granite Metallic will be one of four colours available with the Chevrolet Sonic’s RS trim level.

Rolling on 17-inch five-spoke wheels, the 2013 Chevrolet Sonic RS rides on a lowered and more responsive suspension system suited to sporty driving. Already powered by a turbocharged engine, Chevrolet saw little need to upgrade the performance beyond what is found on the brand new Sonic. Good for 138 horsepower and a responsive 148 pounds-feet of torque, the Ecotec 1.4 liter displacement engine propelling the 2013 Chevrolet Sonic RS should be trust-worthy enough for almost 35 miles per gallon fuel economy. One change coming with the availability of the 2013 Chevrolet Sonic RS is the inclusion of a 6-speed automatic transmission alongside the manual gearbox choice. For the 2012 model year premiere of the Sonic, the only transmission mated with the 1.4 liter turbocharged engine was a 6-speed manual.

With the RS model, the 2013 Chevrolet Sonic reinforces the performance-oriented exterior with a functional but racy cabin. A thicker steering wheel featuring a flat-bottom appearance, aluminum foot pedals and specific graphics on the Sonic’s motorcycle-inspired instrument cluster will be some initial elements defining the RS model. RS-badged sport seating is found for the driver and front passenger who are within reach of standard MyLink infotainment technology. A seven-inch touch screen guides Chevrolet’s new integrated navigation and entertainment system inside the 2013 Sonic RS. Featuring Bluetooth connectivity, smart phones can transmit navigational information and can even allow pictures as well as video to be viewable when the Chevy Sonic RS is at rest. Pandora and Stitcher Internet radio services can also be accessed through the Sonic RS’ MyLink system delivering music selections with cutting-edge technology.

As convertible weather gives way to snow tires in most part of the United States and Canada, the chances dwindle for seeing the newest cars in pristine condition. For reason of controlled environmental factors and the ability to better lure cold-snapped car enthusiasts, the indoor auto show season becomes a regular cure to the blahs that kick in during late fall.

From the late 1980s through to the beginning of the 2000s, the North American International Auto Show existed as the grand showcase for the United States automobile market. Mainly a showcase for General Motors, Ford Motor Company and Chrysler in their figurative backyard, strength of those companies magnetically drew Japanese as well as European manufacturers to the Detroit show.

At the same time as Detroit’s reign as an uncontested mega show, planners behind the Los Angeles Auto Show scheduled the exhibition a week ahead of the North American International Auto Show. This scheduling created a logistical nightmare for auto companies (in particularly the Detroit 3). Levelled with more criticism than Michael Bay from hardcore Transformers Generation 1 fans following the live-action trilogy adaptation, the Los Angeles Auto Show organizers finally bowed to pressure to reschedule their event in 2006. Instead of being the earliest North American major automobile exhibit on the yearly calendar, the Los Angeles Auto Show was moved to one of the latest in the year.

Following the weakened grip the Detroit auto manufacturers on the industry and the increased global focus in general, the Detroit North American International Auto Show is perceived to have lost some of its glamour. Adding the increased allure of an auto show in a generally warmer climate, the Los Angeles Auto Show has connected well in the car-centric California city. Some observers have also questioned lately if the LA car show could be overshadowing the Detroit display.

A question that must be asked when comparing the exhibit in Los Angeles and Detroit, is there a superior auto show?

Size of Exhibition

Both the North American International Auto Show and the Los Angeles Auto Show provides a chance for any visitor to lose themselves in the best of modern automotive culture. With the Detroit show housed in the Cobo Center next door to the Red Wing hockey team’s Joe Louis Arena, exhibition floor space is rated at 623,500 square feet. The Los Angeles Convention Center has 720,000 square feet of advertised space. Both auto shows boast additional floor space with some estimates quoting for the North American International Auto Show as utilizing almost a million square feet of room.

The past two edition of these annual auto shows were not dictated by the size of the convention centers. Since 2009, the auto industry presence at major auto shows is beginning to recuperate from the economic damage. While many had downsized their presentations, other automakers chose not to display at either the Los Angeles or Detroit shows. The biggest drop in auto brand participation at the 2009 North American International Auto Show involved luxury brands like Bentley, Rolls-Royce and Porsche deciding to sit out Detroit. Nissan and Mitsubishi had also been no-shows at the North American International Auto Show as a corporate entity. However, while some companies like Ferrari chose not to appear at Los Angeles as well, Porsche and Rolls-Royce found the auto show hosted inside the largest prestige car market of the United States impossible to miss.

Japanese brand Nissan was absent from the North American International Auto Show in 2010 and 2011 pledging to return for the upcoming 2012 edition.

Show Prices:

For both auto shows, general adult admission is $12 at the gate. For the 2011 edition of the Los Angeles Auto Show, individuals over 65 of age are given $8 show entrance while children under 12 are admitted free with an adult. From November 18 through to Thanksgiving Day, there is a $2 discount if entrants use the E-Ticket system to purchase show admission. The North American International Auto Show’s pricing scheme offers adults over 65 years with $6 admission while free admission for children only covers up to 6 years of age (7-12 year old children are admitted at $6).

In regards to any auto shows, local residents should scan regional newspapers and deal sites for coupons or discount offers on general admission.

Quality of Vehicles at Show:

The North American International Auto Show long had the ability to produce an impressive amount of global and United States automotive lovers with the first peak at the latest showroom vehicles. In the past edition of the Detroit-based auto show, the passion returned with 35 world car premieres bringing allure to the Motor City.

In recent editions of the Los Angeles Auto Show, new car debuts for the North American and world public has become more common. The debut of over 50 vehicles is taking place at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show. During the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show, 21 world automotive debuts included the first presentation of the 2013 Ford Escape, 2013 Ford Shelby GT500, and the all-new Cadillac XTS.

Smaller grille openings, the triangular side glass at the rear, and the massive taillight pillars appear to be defining features Prius buyers will note in common with the standard Prius or Prius v products.

Toyota has been careful to insure the smaller proportions of the Prius c hybrid does not make the vehicle unattractive for passengers. Toyota’s new Entune system will be available on the small hybrid offering giving occupants incredible electronic entertainment and information service options including Pandora. Bluetooth and 9 airbags will be found as standard interior features inside the 2012 Toyota Prius c cabin as valuable companions to 50-plus mile per gallon motoring.

Sporting their refreshed 2012 Civic, the push for Honda to enter the fight in the compact car category took an emotional backseat after March 11th as the effects of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami greatly impacted their corporation. Currently, the operations in Japan are now rendered to 50 percent production capacity as the company is continuing to manage shortages among some part suppliers and the country’s energy resources.

However, due to the dependence of some pieces to the car, assembly of new Civic vehicles will take place at a reduced pace. “…most of our parts for North American production are sourced in North America, but certain key components that come from Japan are in reduced supply. These include electrical parts (e.g. semiconductors, condensers, diodes), various rubber components, and raw materials for plastic and paint, etc.” Assuring that the parts supply is “still fluid”. Jacobs voices that the reduced production turnout will continue throughout the summer adding, “We cannot provide any further production forecasts beyond that at this time.”

While Alliston and the Greensburg plants is feeding out the common 2012 Honda Civic on time on the North American continent, the more advanced Civic Hybrid will continue to emerge from Japan. Built in their Suzuka plant, the 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid is undergoing a major manufacturing change as it upgrades from a nickel-metal hydride battery pack to a lithium-ion electrical storage unit. Despite the battery changeover and the Japanese manufacturing difficulties, the 2012 Civic Hybrid will remain closely on schedule for North America with sales slated by summer.

Second only to the Honda Accord in overall sales in the United States and the best-selling car in Canada 13 years running, the 2012 Civic’s launch is undoubtedly an important event overall for the auto company. Admitting that current demand can not be met as the Japanese automaker’s plants run at lower capacities, Richard Jacobs indicates that a number of new Honda buyers have already shown the willingness to wait through the extended delay time for their 2012 Civic. Jacob does assure on behalf of Honda that the company will work diligently to increase production in the future. Advertised as a “uniquely suited to unique people”, the patience for the 2012 Honda Civic compact car shows that one unique quality in such a rush, rush world.

Regular attendees of at least one of the 2011 auto shows might have noticed the arenas and convention halls were a little more packed over previous years. Through the winter months of 2011, the newly energized auto industry revealed a dizzying exhibition of enchanting forms and cutting-edge technology. Regaining the relevancy to a mode of transportation which enthusiasm was tainted by corporate greed and technological neglect, multiple auto shows occurring within the first three months of this new year have become the trendy places to spend a day.

The launch pad to the 2011 automotive exhibitions, the 2011 North American International Auto Show saw auto manufacturers once again projecting an optimistic look at the future of motoring. Innovative, exciting concepts like the Porsche 918 RSR were joined by products such as the Ford Focus Electric, Volkswagen Passat, and the new family of Toyota Prius offering a sensational exhibition of the 21st century inside Detroit’s Cobo Center. As always with the North American International Auto Show, the 9-day public event completed with blistery cold conditions providing a deterrent as well as an enablement to car show attendance. For 2011 Detroit auto show delivered a 3 percent increase totalling to 735,370 paying attendees. This attendance boost is welcoming as the North American International Auto Show was brought to grief of immediate economic effects just two years prior. Showing a modest increase from 253,384 in 2009 to 258,652 in 2010 would make the 2011 prospect of lofty; this year’s Canadian International Auto Show pulled in 17.4 percent more spectators than 2010 according to publication Canadian Auto Dealer. If accurate, the actual attendance for the 2011 auto show in Toronto would have seen over 303,000 people basking in the warmness of the newest shapes radiating with light.

The rebound in interest for the automobiles is a global phenomenon and there was no better place than Geneva, Switzerland to give backing this declaration. With a tame estimate of 1.5 million North American car fans moving through the gates of the mentioned auto shows, the recently concluded 2011 Geneva Motor Show saw an increase of 6% over the 2010 event. Expecting the presence of 700,000 guests to see vehicles like the Ferrari FF, the Volkswagen Bulli concept and the complete rebirth of Saab, there was in fact over 735,000 arrived for the festivities in the late days of winter.

Many individuals and families partook in the auto show experience through the winter months as attention turns to spring. Spring is the first chance to see some of these previewed machines roaming roadways. One of the most coveted achievements for a car manufacturer has to be the successful creation of a new market niche or perhaps even a niche within a niche. Chrysler did it with the minivan and the Ford Edge went a long way to creating the CUV market. Winning with a new niche means taking chances with design. Hyundai has taken a big chance with the introduction of the 2012 Veloster at the 2011 North American International Auto Show.

Hyundai’s press release calls it a 3 door coupe, but standing beside it one realizes that the Veloster is taller than a traditional coupe. It is substantially larger than a 3 door MINI Clubman and decidedly less sporting than a 3 door Mazda RX-8. It may be possible that Hyundai has succeeded in creating a new niche, but time will tell if consumers actually buy it.

Media reactions on the Detroit show floor seemed mixed. Some didn’t seem too fussy for the design, while others (myself included) went gaga over it. Interestingly, I didn’t hear a single person say they hated it or thought it was a poor idea. I think that most were just happy to see a car manufacturer taking some chances.

Sporty style may be the hook that draws buyers in but those who are looking for more aggressive performance will have to look elsewhere. The Veloster is powered by a direct injected 1.6l 4 banger that generates 138 horsepower and 123 lb/ft of torque. Not exactly the numbers one might want in a potential lapping day warrior. The big positive here is that Hyundai has chosen to put a 6 speed manual in as the base tranny, while their first dual clutch transmission will be optional. Either choice has the potential to make the most out of those 138 ponies and actually make the V fun to drive. For those who are more worried about fuel economy, the Veloster is a winner there as it promises to deliver 40 mpg.

Obviously the Veloster will be marketed to the younger consumer, which means that a full complement of techie toys will be expected. A seven inch touch screen display controls a wide range of media options including internet radio, video playback and game console connectivity. Also included is Hyundai’s Blue Link platform which basically does everything that GM’s OnStar does.

The 3 door body style allows for easier rear seat access, which has always been weak point for 4 place coupe owners with kids. The back seat of the Veloster is definitely for kids only however, as the roofline doesn’t leave much usable headroom. I say usable because there actually is headroom, but as the photos show, most of that space is above with top edge of the windows! Those who suffer from claustrophobia need not apply.

All in all, the 2012 Hyundai Veloster is an interesting package that promises to be a fun little runabout, especially when combined with the base 6 speed manual transmission. Only time in the showroom will tell if Hyundai’s design gamble will pay off.

Since Alan Mulally took the helm of Ford Motor Company, the United States-based automaker’s commitment to improving their car business has been the chief objective for business revitalization. Highlighted by continuing strong 2010 sales of the Ford Fusion and Taurus as well as the eagerly awaited arrival of the new Ford Focus, that mission could be deemed a success on many fronts. Great designs and innovative technology is found throughout Ford’s car lineup. Strategically fighting to prevent neglect to their once dominating truck business, Ford appears to be balancing the scale of their vehicle lineup as late.

While development of the trusty F-150 pickup is maintained at peak levels in the ultra-competitive full-sized truck class, other truck-like vehicles such as the Ford Escape is running 4 years without a major cosmetic address. Fortunate class with the compact sport utility Escape, the benchmark set the current vehicle is still top in the industry. Good for the current vehicle, Ford engineers are presented with a problem attempting to develop a replacement design better than the current Ford Escape. At the 2011 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the Vertrek concept vehicle is strongly hinted as the forward look at the new Escape.

Receiving declaration across the industry over the past year for their production vehicles such as the Ford Fiesta, the Vertrek’s debut in Detroit resulted in a 2011 North American award for Best Concept at the auto show. A creation of what Ford describes as a kinetic design philosophy, the Vertrek concept angles towards being an aerodynamically-conscious body. A much more car-based shape, front end styling and even the roof of the Ford sport utility vehicle (SUV) concept draws unmistakable similarities to that of the new Ford Focus. This should not be so surprising since the Vertrek Concept is crafted on the same C-Segment platform as the upcoming Focus. Though derivative, the SUV does expel its own sense of ruggedness with a tall stance and large wheel arches.

Blatant in their intentions to give future buyers and auto enthusiasts a peak at the future Ford Escape (or the European Ford Kuga) form, production-readiness is apparent in the Vertrek exterior as well as interior styling. A sign of production intent for many aspects of this concept vehicle, the Ford Vertrek’s interior appears at least 80% production ready. Clearly styled, the Vertrek Concept dash panel upper surface runs uninterrupted out to the points of the side view camera pods. Multiple colours are used to inside along different panels and surfaces with an accent of red along the steering wheel, seats and floor mats. Supplying cargo area up to 66.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down, it should be noted that the Ford Vertrek shaves little more than a cubic foot from the confides of the conventional 2011 Escape’s cabin (however, the Vertrek’s space does closely mirror the Escape Hybrid).

Ford has indicated that existing powerplants which could be considered for the Vertrek concept. With a diesel engine option listed as possible for European markets, three gasoline powerplants deemed more suited to the North American market is mentioned. Consisting of a 2.5 liter inline four-cylinder engine or one of two Ford EcoBoost engines (the 1.6 liter and 2-liter displacement sizes), the American automaker has approximated fuel economy improvements up to 20 percent. Ford pledges by 2013, 90% of the products sold in the North American market will have an engine option enabling the EcoBoost technology. Perhaps in a future Ford model, an EcoBoost gasoline engine can combine with a electric powertrain similar to that used with acclaim in the Escape Hybrid. While the Vertrek Concept does not lead any speculation in the future use of a full hybrid powertrains, the design does incorporate the Ford’s Auto Start-Stop system.

One of the first introductions we saw from the North American International Auto Show was the GMC Sierra All Terrain HD. The truck is a concept that shows GMC’s take on the performance off-road truck segment.

Ford has reinvigorated interest in off-roading and performance trucks with its Raptor, which now is available in four-door Crew Cab guise as well. We’ll take one in orange, please.

The Sierra All Terrain HD is more than just a performance package though – it also shows off different design cues and details that seem to hint at the look of the next-generation of the Sierra pick up.

Ground clearance has been increased by about three inches for All Terrain duty and width is up by 4 inches, to 73 inches.To complete the look there are new 20-inch aluminum wheels with 35-inch BF Goodrich KM2 mud terrain tires.

Motivation comes from General Motors’ 6.6-liter Duramax diesel V-8. It produces 397 horsepower and an insane 765 pound-feet of torque. After speaking with the truck’s designer Carl Zipfel, Autoblog reports that the truck is being considered for production, although there are no official plans to build it. Things they did confirm for production is the truck’s Iridium Metallic paint color (set to be a GMC exclusive) as well a dark anodized satin trim finish.

We think producing it makes sense, especially for the GMC brand which is very focused on things like towing. The Sierra All Terrain HD isn’t exactly a direct competitor to the Raptor though – hence the Heavy Duty title. For competition we’d need a lighter, more agile truck. Maybe Chevrolet can produce that one?
