Bold, sharp designs that make you love them or hate them. Hyundai&#8217;s fluid styling is less polarizing. Now there&#8217;s the mark of a successful advertising campaign&#8230;..</p><p>At Chicago Kia is either offering us a preview of the next Soul (which is a way out) or a new sports model. Lets hope it is the former. As far as funky small coupes go, Hyundai has the Veloster. Kia is left without one, selling the more mainstream Koup. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js"></script></p><p>A track-going Soul might have been a laughable thought, but the Track&#8217;ster is unlike any Soul you&#8217;ve ever seen. Under the hood is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making 250 horsepower. Instead of front-wheel drive, the Track&#8217;ster puts power to the wheels through an all-wheel drive system. Its pretty much the concept of a hot hatch and one that has styling win written all over it. The Track&#8217;ster is low to the ground and decked out in a white and red color scheme.</p><p>The roof is painted in red, and it slants downward to the meet up with the rear C-pillar. It conveys motion, and still should offer a nice amount of headroom back there &#8211; if there was a seat that is. For the concept, there isn&#8217;t. Instead, the Track&#8217;ster has a shelf that is meant for racing gear like suits, helmets, tools and the like.</p><p>So is this production or a dream entry? Who knows, it isn&#8217;t clear with the Track&#8217;ster like it is with most concepts. WIth Hyundai having the Veloster though we think it is a distinct possibility. As for us, we give a resounding yes to whether or not it should be produced. From a styling and packaging perspective we&#8217;d rather have this than a MINI Cooper or Fiat 500. We bet it would cost a whole lot less too. The NSX Concept was no doubt Acura&#8217;s main event, and one of the stars of the show. Overall though, the new supercar is a deviation from the strategy that the brand is pursuing. Acura hopes the NSX effect will trickle down, but at the show the ILX Concept was the most important debut, showing off a change in approach for the brand.</p><p>Instead of trying to take it to Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, Acura is repositioning as a more near-luxury brand, going against Buick and Lexus. Its a space that Acura has always found success in in the past. Why not return to it now? The ILX is a return to that. The ILX Concept we really liked at the North American International Auto Show is barely different here; that car was a concept in name only. The ILX&#8217;s style is crisp and youthful, with some very nice lines and surfacing.</p><p><a href="http://www.automoblog.net/2012/02/08/2013-acura-ilx-is-buick-veranos-first-real-competitor/ilx-2-0l-interior/" rel="attachment wp-att-24945"><img src="http://cdn.automoblog.net/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/ilx-2.0l-interior-623x415.jpg" alt="" title="ilx-2.0l-interior" width="623" height="415" class="alignright size-large wp-image-24945" /></a></p><p>It is a genuinely good-looking car, and that is something we have been hard pressed to say about any Acuras of late. This design has had us hopeful about Acura&#8217;s future. While the ILX is Civic based, you would never know it. The interior is where the problem begins&#8230;.</p><p>It doesn&#8217;t feel special enough; we&#8217;re getting Civic vibes. That&#8217;s unfortunate, given that the Civic&#8217;s interior isn&#8217;t even impressive for its segment. That isn&#8217;t to say the ILX doesn&#8217;t Acura-ify things up; it does. Instead of being canted slightly toward the driver, the center stack is vertical and upright. It follows the Acura design motif of a thin swoopy head unit integrated into the center stack. There is also a new navigation system setup mounted in the upper dash. Nice, but a definite win for the Buick Verano in the interior.</p><p>Under the hood there are three engine options. The standard engine is a 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder making 150 horsepower. The top-shelf engine is 201 horsepower 2.4-liter unit mated to a six-speed manual. The fuel economy leader is Acura&#8217;s first hybrid, a Integrated Motor Assist setup combined with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder making 11 horsepower. Acura estimates it will get 35 mpg city/38 mpg highway. The ILX is making a play for first-time luxury buyers in their 20s and 30s. With competitive pricing and based on the looks alone, it should do better than most Acuras in recent memory. Through the winter months of 2011, the newly energized auto industry revealed a dizzying exhibition of enchanting forms and cutting-edge technology. Regaining the relevancy to a mode of transportation which enthusiasm was tainted by corporate greed and technological neglect, multiple auto shows occurring within the first three months of this new year have become the trendy places to spend a day.</p><p>The launch pad to the 2011 automotive exhibitions, the 2011 North American International Auto Show saw auto manufacturers once again projecting an optimistic look at the future of motoring. Innovative, exciting concepts like the Porsche 918 RSR were joined by products such as the Ford Focus Electric, Volkswagen Passat, and the new family of Toyota Prius offering a sensational exhibition of the 21st century inside Detroit’s Cobo Center. As always with the North American International Auto Show, the 9-day public event completed with blistery cold conditions providing a deterrent as well as an enablement to car show attendance. For 2011 Detroit auto show delivered a 3 percent increase totalling to 735,370 paying attendees. This attendance boost is welcoming as the North American International Auto Show was brought to grief of immediate economic effects just two years prior. Powered by a strong headwind of confidence for four-wheeled transportation, the Chicago Auto Show management announced a 10 percent increase over the 2010 show. The exact count for how many people attended the 10 days of the 2011 Chicago Auto Show is not available since the event organizers do not release audience numbers.</p><p>The upbeat message of the auto industry was also passed through Canada. Two major city car shows reported some healthy leaps thanks to fairly cooperate weather and a strong presence from all North American manufacturers. In late January, the Montreal Auto Show played host to an addition 10% general attendees. Counting 207,208 French-Canadian spectators, the enthusiasm turned to the 2011 Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto. With a tame estimate of 1.5 million North American car fans moving through the gates of the mentioned auto shows, the recently concluded 2011 Geneva Motor Show saw an increase of 6% over the 2010 event. Expecting the presence of 700,000 guests to see vehicles like the Ferrari FF, the Volkswagen Bulli concept and the complete rebirth of Saab, there was in fact over 735,000 arrived for the festivities in the late days of winter.</p><p>Many individuals and families partook in the auto show experience through the winter months as attention turns to spring. Spring is the first chance to see some of these previewed machines roaming roadways. Hoping that the auto show crowds will be a barometer for the upcoming activity at dealerships, 2011 has grounds for cautious optimism. What the Heat model does is add 5 horsepower over the Magnum&#8217;s standard V-6. The result is 295 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Certainly nothing to sneeze at, hence the addition of the Heat model for those who want something more aggressive purely in appearance.</p><p>The R/T&#8217;s chromeless-look, sportier front fascia and side skirts continue to the Heat model. Lowered suspension and 20-inch wheels are part of the package as well. Curiously, Dodge also ditches the third-row for the Heat model in order to save on weight.</p><p>That could result in quite a few less customers opting for the model. The Magnum Heat achieves 16 mpg city, 23 mpg highway. Both figures are up on the V-8 R/T model, two for city driving and three for the highway.</p><p>The Heat will check in at $30,295 for the standard front-wheel drive model &#8211; all-wheel drive will set you back $32,295. Will the Heat model find many takers? Last year just 34,049 units were sold, less than half. Clearly Acura needs to update the car to better reflect the market&#8217;s tastes. The updated model debuting at the Chicago Auto Show is Acura&#8217;s attempt to do just that.</p><p>Introduced in 2009, the TL is still a relatively new model, so it isn&#8217;t receiving a full redesign. Instead, the car gets a mild freshening. One of the big points of contention on the TL has been the prominent V-shaped &#8220;beak&#8221; grille and very large Acura &#8220;Power Plenum&#8221; grille insert. The 2012 model is fixing this with a redesigned front fascia that eliminates the V-shaped grille and tones down the silver insert. It is a definite admission the TL&#8217;s styling language was ill-received by consumers, but Acura still seems intent on sticking with the same grille design as a defining brand trait. Out back there is a repositioned license plate, smaller reflectors, updated taillights and thinner trim on the edge of the trunk. New 17 inch 7-spoke aluminum wheels are now standard as well. Exciting stuff? Not exactly, it&#8217;s an improvement.</p><p>The biggest change underneath the skin is upgrading to Acura&#8217;s six-speed Sequential Sport Shift automatic transmission, up from last year&#8217;s five-speed auto. Honda is well-behind the pace of the industry in moving to 6-speed automatics. The transmission helps increase the TL&#8217;s fuel economy to 20/29, adding 3 mpg to the highway driving figure versus the 2011 TL.</p><p>Inside, the TL adds a larger hard drive based navigation system, with capacity at 60 gigabytes. The new system also offers more map coverage, a faster USB connection and upgraded VGA monitor. The car&#8217;s Advance Package adds ventilated seats and a new blind spot information (BSI) system.</p><p>The division clearly lost its way with its last generation of new models and it needs to find a solid direction. Is Acura getting the message about its styling language? It appears to some degree, yes. It is too early to tell though as these are just tweaks to an existing product. The new Charger SRT8 has been unleashed at the Chicago Auto Show and, its more outrageous than ever. Fuel economy regulations&#8230;.what are those? 465 horsepower&#8230;who cares about gas prices?</p><p>The engine is, of course, the SRT8&#8242;s focal point. The car&#8217;s HEMI V-8 gets a bump in displacement, up to 6.4-liters. Curiously, Dodge hasn&#8217;t released finalized performance specs. They just quoted a dash to 60 mph in the &#8220;high 4 second range&#8221; with a top speed of around 175 mph.</p><p>The exterior gets an aggressive working over to visually communicate the added power. The front and rear fascias have been redesigned, with a new spoiler. Up front the crosshair grille gets a unique high-gloss black finish, along with an SRT badge.</p><p>In fact, the grille would have to be our favorite element &#8211; it looks expensive and really sets the SRT8 apart. There is new side-sill cladding painted to match the body color, and 4-inch dual-exhaust tips along with an SRT8 badge out back. If that wasn&#8217;t enough, 20-inch five-spoke forged aluminum wheels complete the look.</p><p>Behind the scenes, Dodge says there is an underbody belly pan that &#8220;features integrated brake ducting to improve cooling and brake fade performance at all four corners.&#8221; This is in addition to upsized brakes 14.2-inches in diameter up front and 13.8-inches in the rear.</p><p>In addition to pure power, the SRT8 also gets a dose of technology, with a new active damping suspension that offers Auto and Sport settings. Also complementing is carbon-weave and fiber aluminum interior trim pieces. Perhaps the coolest feature for enthusiasts is a new Performance Pages feature in the car&#8217;s Uconnect infotainment system.</p><p>The display can be customized to driver preferences, offering instant data on things like steering input measurements, horsepower, torque, expanded engine information, along with 0-60 mph time, 60-0 braking, g-forces and one-eighth mile and quarter-mile times.</p><p>Good stuff! The color Electronic Vehicle Information Center in the gauge cluster also includes the Performance Pages timers and added engine information. Featuring a mini-Darth Vader, the ad proved to be a great way to introduce the 2012 Passat.</p><p>The redesigned Passat, formerly known as the &#8220;NMS&#8221; (New Mid-Size Sedan) is coming as VW looks to expand its influence in the United States-market. The 2011 Jetta first heralded this new approach, introduced as a model to go head-to-head with more downmarket competition than before. The new Jetta, with its lower price point, competes against cars like the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla.</p><p>Many have lamented the company&#8217;s new, more cookie-cutter approach.  It doesn&#8217;t mean the company has to abandon offering more premium models altogether however. The GLI comes as an upscale offering akin to the previous Jetta.</p><p>At launch, VW planned for four engine availability options to be available in the new Jetta. Three have already been made available, the 2.0- and 2.5-liter engines, along with a 2.0-liter TDI diesel. The new GLI brings the forth the fourth (no pun intended) engine option in the group. It is mated to your choice of VW&#8217;s excellent DSG automatic gearbox or a good ol&#8217; six-speed manual. To maintain control of that power, the car gets the GTI&#8217;s XDS cross-differential system as well as four-wheel disc brakes with floating red calipers.</p><p>The GLI&#8217;s styling is more aggressive, with new 18-inch wheels, and a larger cooling air intake and front spoiler that Volkswagen says &#8220;completes the masculine look of the car.&#8221; Out back the car gets smoked taillights.</p><p>The GLI also adds some of the premium features that the standard Jetta lost to get to its current price point &#8211; things like multilink rear suspension. VW says the GLI has a &#8220;track tuned&#8230;four-way independent suspension.&#8221; This is something shared with the North American Jetta&#8217;s more upscale European Jetta counterpart. There is no word on whether the car gets the European model&#8217;s upgraded wiring system, interior materials and added sound deadening.</p><p>Pegged as a &#8220;German sports sedan at an accessible price,&#8221; the GLI is available in three trim levels. Standard GLI, GLI Autobahn and GLI Autobahn Navigation. Pricing for the three checks in at $23,495, $25,545 and $26,445 respectively. The GLI Autobahn adds premium features like dual-zone climate control, heated seats and VW&#8217;s exclusive Fender audio system. The $26,445 GLI Autobahn Navigation gets a navigation system and keyless entry with push-button starter. Launching in 2012, the 550-horsepower Chevrolet Camaro is named the ZL1.</p><p>While some bowtie fans hold the Z28 name in the highest of esteem, many of those same Chevrolet enthusiasts recognize the ZL1 with significance. In 1969, only 69 examples special-ordered Chevrolet Camaro vehicles were produced as a meticulously hand-built, all-aluminum 427 cubic-inch Big Block V-8 estimated to producing 550 horsepower. Devoted for drag racing competition, the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 early application of lightweight technology and rarity makes the car a hot commodity at classic car auctions. During the 2007 Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale, one bidder paid $880,000 for a white Camaro ZL1 coupe. Drivers of the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will also reap the benefits of electric power steering which promotes greater reaction and feedback as the Camaro ZL1 is being put through its paces.</p><p>Of course, the heart this masterpiece is a supercharged version of the SS&#8217; 6.2 liter V-8 engine. The same LSA engine found on the Cadillac CTS-V models, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 boasts 124 horsepower more than the Camaro SS fitted with a 6-speed manual transmission. The first Chevrolet Camaro production car to feature electric power steering, the Camaro will also be the first General Motors car in North America to manage wheel power through a dual-disc clutch transmission. A six-speed manual model, ZL1 drivers will enjoy the performance of a full manual gearbox with the smoothness of an automatic transmission. MyTouch seeks to blend Ford in vehicle features into a cohesive experience that will feature intuitive controls, more voice activation as well as interface personalization.</p><p>The interface for the MyFord Touch system are dual 4.2-inch LCD screens and a five-way button steering wheel controls and another 8-inch touch screen all controlled by simplified SYNC voice commands. MyFord will launch this year on 2011 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX, and roll out in other FoMoCo products thereafter.</p><p>“MyFord delivers a premium interior experience that will help consumers fall in love with their vehicles again. It integrates all our signature features so customers will know exactly what they’re going to get in any Ford vehicle they may find themselves driving, no matter where they are in the world,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development.</p><p>Ford feels that this is a move that the company has to make, and that it is being driven by what consumers are suing outside the automotive world. It was readily apparent that unless we devised an intuitive interface to help drivers manage these capabilities, they could detract – and possibly distract – from the driving experience,” said Mark Fields, Ford’s president of The Americas.</p><p>After roll out in the 2011 Ford Edge, MyFord will be seen in the all-new 2012 Ford Focus for global markets. Ford says that by 2015, approximately 80 percent of their North American models are expected to have MyFord driver connect technology, with similar percentages predicted for the world market.</p><p> “We’ve developed an environment that will make every Ford vehicle feel like a Ford,” said Kuzak. “Across the country, across the globe, all of our products will have the same type of feel, making them instantly comfortable to the drivers who know and love them, and MyFord will become a key part of the joy of owning and driving a Ford product.”</p><p>So look for most of the Ford model range to have everything from HVAC to the radio to your iPod controlled by the new MyFord system. After te Fiesta Movement where 100 people were given a Euro-spec Fiesta to drive around for six months, interest has gathered about the small car and has resulted in 6,000 people already reserving one and more than 100,000 showing an interest (how they gauge that I don&#8217;t know.)</p><p>Ford reports that 51% of the pre-orders are from previous non-Ford customers, which is a pretty big deal for Ford. Surprisingly (and fortunately,) 65% of buyers are choosing the five-door hatchback model over the four-door sedan. This is great news, and shows that we in the States are finally starting to accept hatchbacks (plus the Fiesta hatch looks much better.) Another excellent statistic: among the top three color choices are Blue Flame and Lime Squeeze &#8211; two bright and vibrant colors! Regular readers know <a href="http://www.automoblog.net/2010/02/05/economy-makes-people-choose-boring-car-colors/">how I feel about boring car colors</a>.</p><p><img src="http://cdn.automoblog.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/IMG_8707.jpg" alt="2011 Ford Fiesta rear" title="IMG_8707" width="600" height="358" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5208" /></p><p>The 2011 Ford Fiesta starts at a reasonable $13,320 for the sedan, $15,120 for the much cooler hatch. Ford estimates the EPA fuel economy ratings at 30 mpg city, 40 hwy, which needless to say, are great numbers. The Fiesta is powered by a 119 hp 1.6-liter engine and mated to a 6-speed automatic or 5-speed manual gearbox (seems a bit strange that the manual is a 5-speed.) src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js"></script></div><p>At what was without question the best press conference of the 2010 Chicago Auto Show, Kia unveiled their newest concept car &#8211; the <strong>Kia Ray Hybrid Concept</strong>. The plug-in hybrid is a four-door but coupe-like body that uses lightweight and recycled material along with a roof-top solar panel embedded in the glass roof. The solar panel powers the lighting and climate controls much like the current Toyota Prius, and does not charge the vehicle&#8217;s batteries.</p><p>The Kia Ray was designed to break away from the current hybrid design trend, which makes everything look awkward. Glance at the Toyota Prius, Nissan Leaf, or Honda Insight and you&#8217;ll see they look very similar in shape; something Kia didn&#8217;t want to be a part of. Kia wanted to develop &#8220;something that you wouldn’t feel embarrassed driving, but actually feel proud to be seen in.&#8221; Airplanes were used in the design process for inspiration, <a href="http://kia-buzz.com/?p=3902">Kia says</a>, using the &#8220;less is more&#8221; rationale,designing so that everything is there for a reason. &#8220;The body side section has an uncommon curvature that gives the car a fuselage like appearance and increases aerodynamics. Rear fenders and spoiler slide back to improve the overall Cd at higher speed.&#8221; Typical concept features &#8211; motion-detecting cameras and front driving lamps that open up when the gasoline engine is being used &#8211; are present but will not likely be on a production model.</p><p><img src="http://cdn.automoblog.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/Kia-Ray-Hybrid-Concept-4.jpg" alt="" title="Kia Ray Hybrid Concept (4)" width="600" height="335" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-5162" /></p><p>A new &#8220;cool car&#8221; technology is being used in the Ray Concept which includes nano-laminate films and cool-glazing material to reduce solar heat. The roof-top solar panels power an interior cooling fan to keep the inside from  getting too hot.</p><p>The interior design of the Ray is sexy, using an open-air design and lightweight recycled materials. The sexy touch-screen instrument panel obviously won&#8217;t make it into production but is a great concept. The <a href="http://www.automoblog.net/2010/01/08/kia-uvo-taking-on-fords-sync/">Kia UVO</a> system is implemented into the car, giving owners a personalized &#8220;infotainment&#8221; experience. White leather and wool felt is used to create an &#8220;earthy&#8221; and open feel to the interior, and a honeycomb design is used throughout the cabin for strength, weight savings, and to tie the theme together. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js"></script></p><p>Powering the Kia Ray Concept is a 1.4-liter, 153 horsepower gasoline DI engine connected to a CVT. A 78kw electric motor powers the car when the gas engine isn&#8217;t needed. Low rolling-resistance 20-inch tires are fitted to the car, further increasing efficiency.</p><p>Kia says the Ray Concept can get 77.6 mpg in regular hybrid mode, and 202.3 mpg when in plug-in mode. They expect the car to have a range of 746 miles before you need to fill up, which is pretty damn good.</p><p>The Kia Ray Hybrid is more of a design concept than anything else, since the powertrain and technology offered don&#8217;t give us anything special. This is still important, since it proves you can have a good looking hybrid car that is still very aerodynamic. My flight got canceled and rescheduled due to weather, so I ended up missing the first two press conferences,Ford and Toyota. Whosever bright idea it was to hold one of the biggest auto shows in the world in the middle of Chicago&#8217;s winter needs to be shot. Regardless, we got some great information and images of the newest cars, unveilings, and concepts coming out of the industry this year.</p><p>First, I&#8217;d like to thank <a href="http://www.bridgestone.com/">Bridgestone</a> for being such a great host, providing travel, accommodations, grub, and a gift.</p><p>The first press conference of the day was <strong>Ford</strong>, who unveiled the <strong>2011 Ford Edge</strong>, along with the <strong>Ford Transit Connect Electric and Connect Taxi</strong>, which will go into production later this year, allowing &#8220;commercial and government fleet operators to go gas-free.&#8221; The Transit Connect will be fully electric, and the Connect Taxi will offer a package allowing conversion to clean-burning compressed natural gas (CNG) or propane (LPG.) While not particularly exciting, it&#8217;s great news for everyone; having thousands of businesses in the US convert to electric, LPG, or CNG propulsion for the millions of miles they drive is huge news, and will open up doors to an infrastructure for consumer electric cars.</p><p><img src="http://cdn.automoblog.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/11_TC_Electric_06.jpg" alt="Ford Transit Connect Electric and Taxi" title="11_TC_Electric_06" width="622" height="167" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-5102" /></p><p>More big news from Ford is the <strong>MyFord Touch</strong>, a high-tech in-car connectivity option that integrates with SYNC and allows for lots of customization. I&#8217;ll give more details in another article, because this this technology looks as game-changing as SYNC was when it was first released. Ford&#8217;s display also shows off many new models including the new-engined 2011 Mustang and GT500, Fiesta, Fusion, and the redesigned 2011 Focus.</p><p><strong>Toyota</strong>&#8216;s conference was next, who along with apologizing for the catastrophic sticky pedal issues, unveiled the <strong>2011 Toyota Avalon</strong>. Basically a higher-end evolution of the luxury sedan, the 2011 Avalon will go on sale beginning Spring 2010. Honda said they want to capture what they call the &#8220;hesitators&#8221; &#8211; folks who like the functionality of a minivan but don&#8217;t buy because of the vanilla, soccer-mom image that goes along with them. They also have some special edition Camaros lined up including the <a href="http://www.automoblog.net/2009/07/22/2010-chevy-camaro-transformers-edition/">Camaro Transformers Edition</a> (awesome) and <a href="http://www.automoblog.net/2010/01/14/2010-camaro-synergy-special-edition/">Camaro Synergy Green Pacakge</a>. The Ecopia EP422 line is a series of all-season, low rolling resistance tires built with recycled rubber. Bridgestone says the tires show a 36% improvement in rolling resistance compared to a typical tire, which converts to a 4% increase in fuel economy.</p><p><strong>Kia</strong> was without question the best press conference of the day, being the only brand out of the bunch to remember what a high-energy, exciting, and fun press show is about. Starting out with a live band (The Rays) and beer, Kia brought out two of their Super Bowl mascots, then unveiled the cool new <strong>Kia Ray Hybrid Concept</strong>. Although none of the other manufacturers had any unveilings, many still had big displays with vehicles of interest&#8230;</p><p><strong>Hyundai</strong>&#8216;s superstar is the all-new <strong>2011 Sonata</strong>, which turns out is quite an upgrade from it&#8217;s current-generation bland-mobile.
