Looking at Kia’s lineup and its clear it is one for those who don’t want to blend in. Bold, sharp designs that make you love them or hate them. Hyundai’s fluid styling is less polarizing. The Soul is one of those polarizing cars, but what you can’t really deny is its coolness factor. We can’t help but think of the hamsters when we see it either. Now there’s the mark of a successful advertising campaign…..

At Chicago Kia is either offering us a preview of the next Soul (which is a way out) or a new sports model. Lets hope it is the former. As far as funky small coupes go, Hyundai has the Veloster. Kia is left without one, selling the more mainstream Koup. Ditching the four-door layout of the Soul, the Track’ster is, as its name implies, designed for the track in mind.

A track-going Soul might have been a laughable thought, but the Track’ster is unlike any Soul you’ve ever seen. Under the hood is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making 250 horsepower. Instead of front-wheel drive, the Track’ster puts power to the wheels through an all-wheel drive system. Its pretty much the concept of a hot hatch and one that has styling win written all over it. The Track’ster is low to the ground and decked out in a white and red color scheme.

The roof is painted in red, and it slants downward to the meet up with the rear C-pillar. It conveys motion, and still should offer a nice amount of headroom back there – if there was a seat that is. For the concept, there isn’t. Instead, the Track’ster has a shelf that is meant for racing gear like suits, helmets, tools and the like.

So is this production or a dream entry? Who knows, it isn’t clear with the Track’ster like it is with most concepts. WIth Hyundai having the Veloster though we think it is a distinct possibility. As for us, we give a resounding yes to whether or not it should be produced. From a styling and packaging perspective we’d rather have this than a MINI Cooper or Fiat 500. We bet it would cost a whole lot less too. Kia design is on a roll!

Last month Acura previewed major changes to its lineup. The NSX Concept was no doubt Acura’s main event, and one of the stars of the show. Overall though, the new supercar is a deviation from the strategy that the brand is pursuing. Acura hopes the NSX effect will trickle down, but at the show the ILX Concept was the most important debut, showing off a change in approach for the brand.

Instead of trying to take it to Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, Acura is repositioning as a more near-luxury brand, going against Buick and Lexus. Its a space that Acura has always found success in in the past. Why not return to it now? The ILX is a return to that. The ILX Concept we really liked at the North American International Auto Show is barely different here; that car was a concept in name only. The ILX’s style is crisp and youthful, with some very nice lines and surfacing.

It is a genuinely good-looking car, and that is something we have been hard pressed to say about any Acuras of late. This design has had us hopeful about Acura’s future. While the ILX is Civic based, you would never know it. The interior is where the problem begins….

It doesn’t feel special enough; we’re getting Civic vibes. That’s unfortunate, given that the Civic’s interior isn’t even impressive for its segment. That isn’t to say the ILX doesn’t Acura-ify things up; it does. Instead of being canted slightly toward the driver, the center stack is vertical and upright. It follows the Acura design motif of a thin swoopy head unit integrated into the center stack. There is also a new navigation system setup mounted in the upper dash. Nice, but a definite win for the Buick Verano in the interior.

Under the hood there are three engine options. The standard engine is a 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder making 150 horsepower. The top-shelf engine is 201 horsepower 2.4-liter unit mated to a six-speed manual. The fuel economy leader is Acura’s first hybrid, a Integrated Motor Assist setup combined with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder making 11 horsepower. Acura estimates it will get 35 mpg city/38 mpg highway. The ILX is making a play for first-time luxury buyers in their 20s and 30s. With competitive pricing and based on the looks alone, it should do better than most Acuras in recent memory. It’s just too bad they didn’t bring their A-game in the interior.

Regular attendees of at least one of the 2011 auto shows might have noticed the arenas and convention halls were a little more packed over previous years. Through the winter months of 2011, the newly energized auto industry revealed a dizzying exhibition of enchanting forms and cutting-edge technology. Regaining the relevancy to a mode of transportation which enthusiasm was tainted by corporate greed and technological neglect, multiple auto shows occurring within the first three months of this new year have become the trendy places to spend a day.

The launch pad to the 2011 automotive exhibitions, the 2011 North American International Auto Show saw auto manufacturers once again projecting an optimistic look at the future of motoring. Innovative, exciting concepts like the Porsche 918 RSR were joined by products such as the Ford Focus Electric, Volkswagen Passat, and the new family of Toyota Prius offering a sensational exhibition of the 21st century inside Detroit’s Cobo Center. As always with the North American International Auto Show, the 9-day public event completed with blistery cold conditions providing a deterrent as well as an enablement to car show attendance. For 2011 Detroit auto show delivered a 3 percent increase totalling to 735,370 paying attendees. This attendance boost is welcoming as the North American International Auto Show was brought to grief of immediate economic effects just two years prior. Since 2009, attendance to the Detroit automotive display has risen by 80,000 spectators.

With a bump up in auto show spectators at Detroit, the momentum continued as the newest vehicles breezed into the Windy City for the 2011 Chicago Auto Show. Powered by a strong headwind of confidence for four-wheeled transportation, the Chicago Auto Show management announced a 10 percent increase over the 2010 show. The exact count for how many people attended the 10 days of the 2011 Chicago Auto Show is not available since the event organizers do not release audience numbers.

The upbeat message of the auto industry was also passed through Canada. Two major city car shows reported some healthy leaps thanks to fairly cooperate weather and a strong presence from all North American manufacturers. In late January, the Montreal Auto Show played host to an addition 10% general attendees. Counting 207,208 French-Canadian spectators, the enthusiasm turned to the 2011 Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto. A very robust presentation of an estimated 1,000 vehicles (I can attest to this fact personally), the show was looking to return to audience above 300,000 people after being hard hit two years prior. Showing a modest increase from 253,384 in 2009 to 258,652 in 2010 would make the 2011 prospect of lofty; this year’s Canadian International Auto Show pulled in 17.4 percent more spectators than 2010 according to publication Canadian Auto Dealer. If accurate, the actual attendance for the 2011 auto show in Toronto would have seen over 303,000 people basking in the warmness of the newest shapes radiating with light.

The rebound in interest for the automobiles is a global phenomenon and there was no better place than Geneva, Switzerland to give backing this declaration. With a tame estimate of 1.5 million North American car fans moving through the gates of the mentioned auto shows, the recently concluded 2011 Geneva Motor Show saw an increase of 6% over the 2010 event. Expecting the presence of 700,000 guests to see vehicles like the Ferrari FF, the Volkswagen Bulli concept and the complete rebirth of Saab, there was in fact over 735,000 arrived for the festivities in the late days of winter.

Many individuals and families partook in the auto show experience through the winter months as attention turns to spring. Spring is the first chance to see some of these previewed machines roaming roadways. Hoping that the auto show crowds will be a barometer for the upcoming activity at dealerships, 2011 has grounds for cautious optimism. While many carmakers are already enjoying strong sales, the audience at these indoor exhibitions could be either a cause or an effect.

The Dodge Durango launched for 2011 as a thoroughly redesigned version of Dodge’s three-row body-on-frame SUV. The Durango, like the Grand Cherokee, moved to a unibody platform that better serves the needs of what the marketplace is demanding.

Dodge’s debuts at the Chicago Auto Show have been mostly about performance – the Charger SRT8 made an appearance, as well as new R/T variants for the Journey crossover and Dodge Caravan minivan.

For 2012, Dodge is looking to provide Magnum customers looking for extra sportiness the option to do so without upgrading to the R/T.

The Heat is a way to do that, looking the R/T part but ditching the powerful V-8 under its hood. What the Heat model does is add 5 horsepower over the Magnum’s standard V-6. The result is 295 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Certainly nothing to sneeze at, hence the addition of the Heat model for those who want something more aggressive purely in appearance.

The R/T’s chromeless-look, sportier front fascia and side skirts continue to the Heat model. Lowered suspension and 20-inch wheels are part of the package as well. Curiously, Dodge also ditches the third-row for the Heat model in order to save on weight.

That could result in quite a few less customers opting for the model. The Magnum Heat achieves 16 mpg city, 23 mpg highway. Both figures are up on the V-8 R/T model, two for city driving and three for the highway.

The Heat will check in at $30,295 for the standard front-wheel drive model – all-wheel drive will set you back $32,295. Will the Heat model find many takers? It’s hard to say with the deletion of a third-seat, but regardless its good to see Dodge offering options like this to increase diversity in the model lineup.

Acura’s styling language has taken lot of flak in the automotive press – and there have been studies out that point to sales being negatively affected. While the mid-size TL has traditionally been a hot seller for Acura , in recent years it has fallen behind.

2005 marked the sales high water mark for the model, selling 78,218 units,. Last year just 34,049 units were sold, less than half. Clearly Acura needs to update the car to better reflect the market’s tastes. The updated model debuting at the Chicago Auto Show is Acura’s attempt to do just that.

Introduced in 2009, the TL is still a relatively new model, so it isn’t receiving a full redesign. Instead, the car gets a mild freshening. One of the big points of contention on the TL has been the prominent V-shaped “beak” grille and very large Acura “Power Plenum” grille insert. The 2012 model is fixing this with a redesigned front fascia that eliminates the V-shaped grille and tones down the silver insert. The grille is now aligned with the headlights, which have received a dark tint.

The result is a much cleaner and more balanced front end. It is a definite admission the TL’s styling language was ill-received by consumers, but Acura still seems intent on sticking with the same grille design as a defining brand trait. Out back there is a repositioned license plate, smaller reflectors, updated taillights and thinner trim on the edge of the trunk. New 17 inch 7-spoke aluminum wheels are now standard as well. Exciting stuff? Not exactly, it’s an improvement.

The biggest change underneath the skin is upgrading to Acura’s six-speed Sequential Sport Shift automatic transmission, up from last year’s five-speed auto. Honda is well-behind the pace of the industry in moving to 6-speed automatics. The transmission helps increase the TL’s fuel economy to 20/29, adding 3 mpg to the highway driving figure versus the 2011 TL.

Inside, the TL adds a larger hard drive based navigation system, with capacity at 60 gigabytes. The new system also offers more map coverage, a faster USB connection and upgraded VGA monitor. The car’s Advance Package adds ventilated seats and a new blind spot information (BSI) system.

The division clearly lost its way with its last generation of new models and it needs to find a solid direction. Is Acura getting the message about its styling language? It appears to some degree, yes. It is too early to tell though as these are just tweaks to an existing product. We’ll find out for sure when the company launches all-new models.

Mazda recently announced that its beloved MX-5 roadster had crossed the 900,000 unit mark. That’s a lot of roadsters, and the milestone was reached over 22 years since the original launched in 1989. The MX-5 is the world’s best-selling two-seater, a record it has held since 2000.

With the Chicago Auto Show in full-swing, Mazda has released a new special edition model, apparently to celebrate the occasion. Introduced as a 2006 model, the current MX-5 is likely to set to get replaced in the near future, a possible reason for Mazda’s introduction of a special edition.

The special edition MX-5 gets a really clever name (not) – it is dubbed simply the MX-5 Miata Special Edition. The model is limited to just 750 units and is differentiated primarily by its black and gray interior color scheme, chrome air vents and instrument colors along with aluminum pedals on the manual transmission model.

There is your choice of two colors, Sparkling Black Mica or Dolphin Gray Mica. New 17-inch Bright Finish aluminum alloy wheels are standard.

The Special Edition comes standard with Mazda’s Power Retractable Hard Top (PRHT) and will include all the features of a fully-equipped Grand Touring model with Premium package.

This means added equipment like Bluetooth®, SIRIUS® Satellite Radio with a six-month complimentary subscription, Xenon headlights, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with a Traction Control System (TCS), an alarm and Mazda’s Advanced Keyless Entry and Start System.

In addition, the Special Edition adds the Suspension package which includes Bilstein shock absorbers, a limited slip differential (LSD) and stiffer suspension tuning. The 2011 MX-5 Miata Special Edition is exclusive to North America and starts at $30,925 when equipped with a manual transmission, and $31,525 when opting for a six-speed automatic.

Is it safe to say that the Chrysler Group is regaining its mojo back? We think so. The company’s Detroit-focued spot featuring Eminem got everyone talking and new models like the 300 and Charger haven’t failed to impress.

For enthusiasts, the rear-wheel drive LX cars are where the action is at, and particularly at Dodge. The new Charger SRT8 has been unleashed at the Chicago Auto Show and, its more outrageous than ever. Fuel economy regulations….what are those? 465 horsepower…who cares about gas prices?

The engine is, of course, the SRT8′s focal point. The car’s HEMI V-8 gets a bump in displacement, up to 6.4-liters. It makes an even 465 horsepower and 465 pound feet of torque at a lowly 2,900 rpm.

While the industry is moving to six-, seven- and even eight-speed automatic transmissions, the SRT8 sticks with Chrysler’s five-speed auto.

Cylinder deactivation will enable the beast of an engine to run on four-cylinders at times. Curiously, Dodge hasn’t released finalized performance specs. They just quoted a dash to 60 mph in the “high 4 second range” with a top speed of around 175 mph.

The exterior gets an aggressive working over to visually communicate the added power. The front and rear fascias have been redesigned, with a new spoiler. Up front the crosshair grille gets a unique high-gloss black finish, along with an SRT badge.

In fact, the grille would have to be our favorite element – it looks expensive and really sets the SRT8 apart. There is new side-sill cladding painted to match the body color, and 4-inch dual-exhaust tips along with an SRT8 badge out back. If that wasn’t enough, 20-inch five-spoke forged aluminum wheels complete the look.

Behind the scenes, Dodge says there is an underbody belly pan that “features integrated brake ducting to improve cooling and brake fade performance at all four corners.” This is in addition to upsized brakes 14.2-inches in diameter up front and 13.8-inches in the rear.

In addition to pure power, the SRT8 also gets a dose of technology, with a new active damping suspension that offers Auto and Sport settings. The system takes in information on steering angle, break pressure, throttle position, lateral acceleration and speed.

The interior gets new sports seats, a Harmon Kardon 19-speaker audio system and a flat-bottom steering wheel. Also complementing is carbon-weave and fiber aluminum interior trim pieces. Perhaps the coolest feature for enthusiasts is a new Performance Pages feature in the car’s Uconnect infotainment system.

The display can be customized to driver preferences, offering instant data on things like steering input measurements, horsepower, torque, expanded engine information, along with 0-60 mph time, 60-0 braking, g-forces and one-eighth mile and quarter-mile times.

Good stuff! The color Electronic Vehicle Information Center in the gauge cluster also includes the Performance Pages timers and added engine information. The new Charger SRT-8 is set to go on sale this fall, as a 2012 model.

Volkswagen has been in the news for its highly-successful “The Force” Super Bowl advertisement. Featuring a mini-Darth Vader, the ad proved to be a great way to introduce the 2012 Passat.

The redesigned Passat, formerly known as the “NMS” (New Mid-Size Sedan) is coming as VW looks to expand its influence in the United States-market. The 2011 Jetta first heralded this new approach, introduced as a model to go head-to-head with more downmarket competition than before. The new Jetta, with its lower price point, competes against cars like the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla.

Many have lamented the company’s new, more cookie-cutter approach. It doesn’t mean the company has to abandon offering more premium models altogether however. The GLI comes as an upscale offering akin to the previous Jetta.

At launch, VW planned for four engine availability options to be available in the new Jetta. Three have already been made available, the 2.0- and 2.5-liter engines, along with a 2.0-liter TDI diesel. The new GLI brings the forth the fourth (no pun intended) engine option in the group. Upgrading to it means getting one of the best engine and transmission combinations in VW’s portfolio.

The GLI’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder comes from the GTI and makes 200 horsepower and 207-pound feet of torque. It is mated to your choice of VW’s excellent DSG automatic gearbox or a good ol’ six-speed manual. To maintain control of that power, the car gets the GTI’s XDS cross-differential system as well as four-wheel disc brakes with floating red calipers.

The GLI’s styling is more aggressive, with new 18-inch wheels, and a larger cooling air intake and front spoiler that Volkswagen says “completes the masculine look of the car.” Out back the car gets smoked taillights.

The GLI also adds some of the premium features that the standard Jetta lost to get to its current price point – things like multilink rear suspension. VW says the GLI has a “track tuned…four-way independent suspension.” This is something shared with the North American Jetta’s more upscale European Jetta counterpart. There is no word on whether the car gets the European model’s upgraded wiring system, interior materials and added sound deadening.

Pegged as a “German sports sedan at an accessible price,” the GLI is available in three trim levels. Standard GLI, GLI Autobahn and GLI Autobahn Navigation. Pricing for the three checks in at $23,495, $25,545 and $26,445 respectively. The GLI Autobahn adds premium features like dual-zone climate control, heated seats and VW’s exclusive Fender audio system. The $26,445 GLI Autobahn Navigation gets a navigation system and keyless entry with push-button starter. The car is set to go on sale later this year.

For the Z28 fans eagerly awaiting the high-performance Camaro meant to revive the famous moniker, the 2011 Chicago Auto Show debut of Chevrolet’s newest pony car is a bittersweet unveiling. Fulfilling the desires for a Chevrolet Camaro performing above the current top of the line SS trim, it’s apparent that the spied prototype many identify as the Camaro Z28 was working under assumed name. Launching in 2012, the 550-horsepower Chevrolet Camaro is named the ZL1.

While some bowtie fans hold the Z28 name in the highest of esteem, many of those same Chevrolet enthusiasts recognize the ZL1 with significance. In 1969, only 69 examples special-ordered Chevrolet Camaro vehicles were produced as a meticulously hand-built, all-aluminum 427 cubic-inch Big Block V-8 estimated to producing 550 horsepower. Devoted for drag racing competition, the 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 early application of lightweight technology and rarity makes the car a hot commodity at classic car auctions. During the 2007 Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale, one bidder paid $880,000 for a white Camaro ZL1 coupe. Intended for a higher production number and more widely available, the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro will again bring high-performance to the General Motors pony car.

Exemplifying the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 coupe, the primary exterior detail is the aluminum hood featuring a raised carbon fiber insert within the center. Incorporating special vents GM call air extractors, excess airflow is allowed to escape through the hood over top of the Camaro ZL1 inspiring improved aerodynamics. Front end look of the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 casts an exotic street performance appearance with an unique fascia integrating a lower splitter. Standard HID headlamps, fog lights and 20-inch, forged aluminum wheels centered within specially-developed Goodyear Supercar F2 tires accomplishes the ZL1 outer character.

Inside the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, a black, leather interior decorated with specific microfiber suede inserts is found with a full-array of standard features. Heated, six-way power-adjustable bucket seats with ‘ZL1′ embroidered on the front headrests. Other interior equipment on the Camaro ZL1 includes Boston Acoustics premium sound system, rear camera system and Bluetooth connectivity livening up its technical convenience allure.

Stepping beyond simple aesthetics and lavishness, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is outfitted with advances in handling. All Camaro ZL1 models ride on the Magnetic Ride Control featuring setting for ‘Sport’ and ‘Tour’. For stopping power, performance brake company Brembo has contributed to the development of 14.4-inch disc brakes on the front and 14.2-inch disc brakes on the rear wheels. Drivers of the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will also reap the benefits of electric power steering which promotes greater reaction and feedback as the Camaro ZL1 is being put through its paces.

Of course, the heart this masterpiece is a supercharged version of the SS’ 6.2 liter V-8 engine. The same LSA engine found on the Cadillac CTS-V models, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 boasts 124 horsepower more than the Camaro SS fitted with a 6-speed manual transmission. The first Chevrolet Camaro production car to feature electric power steering, the Camaro will also be the first General Motors car in North America to manage wheel power through a dual-disc clutch transmission. A six-speed manual model, ZL1 drivers will enjoy the performance of a full manual gearbox with the smoothness of an automatic transmission. Actual performance numbers for the Camaro ZL1 are yet to be published but expect 0 to 60 mile per hour acceleration in the lower end of the 4-second range.

With official pricing information planned for a later date, more details on the supercharged V-8 powered Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 will be released ahead of its early 2012 year debut.

Ford recently rolled out the new MyTouch system, and it has been garnering raves for what it could possibly bring to the automotive world. Essentially MyTouch is Ford’s Sync system on steroids, a Maxi-Sync, if you will. MyTouch seeks to blend Ford in vehicle features into a cohesive experience that will feature intuitive controls, more voice activation as well as interface personalization.

The interface for the MyFord Touch system are dual 4.2-inch LCD screens and a five-way button steering wheel controls and another 8-inch touch screen all controlled by simplified SYNC voice commands. MyFord will launch this year on 2011 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX, and roll out in other FoMoCo products thereafter.

“MyFord delivers a premium interior experience that will help consumers fall in love with their vehicles again. It integrates all our signature features so customers will know exactly what they’re going to get in any Ford vehicle they may find themselves driving, no matter where they are in the world,” said Derrick Kuzak, Ford group vice president, Global Product Development.

Ford feels that this is a move that the company has to make, and that it is being driven by what consumers are suing outside the automotive world. The expectations of regular motorists have outgrown the conventional “button/knob/gauge” interface used for the past 100 years in cars, and most consumer and household electronics now feature colorful digital displays and multi- function touch-sensitive buttons.

Combine that with the unavoidable trend in recent years that has seen a massive expansion in the variety of in-car communications, navigation and infotainment technologies consumers regularly use, and Ford thinks it’s time to get out ahead of the game.

“As we began developing MyFord’s capability, we saw this groundswell of new technology, new functionality and incredible capability opening up to consumers. It was readily apparent that unless we devised an intuitive interface to help drivers manage these capabilities, they could detract – and possibly distract – from the driving experience,” said Mark Fields, Ford’s president of The Americas.

After roll out in the 2011 Ford Edge, MyFord will be seen in the all-new 2012 Ford Focus for global markets. Ford says that by 2015, approximately 80 percent of their North American models are expected to have MyFord driver connect technology, with similar percentages predicted for the world market.

“We’ve developed an environment that will make every Ford vehicle feel like a Ford,” said Kuzak. “Across the country, across the globe, all of our products will have the same type of feel, making them instantly comfortable to the drivers who know and love them, and MyFord will become a key part of the joy of owning and driving a Ford product.”

So look for most of the Ford model range to have everything from HVAC to the radio to your iPod controlled by the new MyFord system. Below is a video showing the new system in action.

2011 Ford Fiesta at the 2010 Chicago Auto Show

Today, Ford is opening up for customers to reserve their own customized 2011 Ford Fiesta for release this Summer. After te Fiesta Movement where 100 people were given a Euro-spec Fiesta to drive around for six months, interest has gathered about the small car and has resulted in 6,000 people already reserving one and more than 100,000 showing an interest (how they gauge that I don’t know.)

Ford reports that 51% of the pre-orders are from previous non-Ford customers, which is a pretty big deal for Ford. Surprisingly (and fortunately,) 65% of buyers are choosing the five-door hatchback model over the four-door sedan. This is great news, and shows that we in the States are finally starting to accept hatchbacks (plus the Fiesta hatch looks much better.) Another excellent statistic: among the top three color choices are Blue Flame and Lime Squeeze – two bright and vibrant colors! Regular readers know how I feel about boring car colors.

The 2011 Ford Fiesta starts at a reasonable $13,320 for the sedan, $15,120 for the much cooler hatch. Ford estimates the EPA fuel economy ratings at 30 mpg city, 40 hwy, which needless to say, are great numbers. The Fiesta is powered by a 119 hp 1.6-liter engine and mated to a 6-speed automatic or 5-speed manual gearbox (seems a bit strange that the manual is a 5-speed.) Here’s hoping that next year we see a turbocharged Sport model.

Reserve the car on the 2011 Fiesta website or your local dealer and get the SYNC and Premium Sound upgrade package for no cost.

At what was without question the best press conference of the 2010 Chicago Auto Show, Kia unveiled their newest concept car – the Kia Ray Hybrid Concept. The plug-in hybrid is a four-door but coupe-like body that uses lightweight and recycled material along with a roof-top solar panel embedded in the glass roof. The solar panel powers the lighting and climate controls much like the current Toyota Prius, and does not charge the vehicle’s batteries.

The Kia Ray was designed to break away from the current hybrid design trend, which makes everything look awkward. Glance at the Toyota Prius, Nissan Leaf, or Honda Insight and you’ll see they look very similar in shape; something Kia didn’t want to be a part of. Kia wanted to develop “something that you wouldn’t feel embarrassed driving, but actually feel proud to be seen in.” Airplanes were used in the design process for inspiration, Kia says, using the “less is more” rationale,designing so that everything is there for a reason. “The body side section has an uncommon curvature that gives the car a fuselage like appearance and increases aerodynamics. Rear fenders and spoiler slide back to improve the overall Cd at higher speed.” Typical concept features – motion-detecting cameras and front driving lamps that open up when the gasoline engine is being used – are present but will not likely be on a production model.

A new “cool car” technology is being used in the Ray Concept which includes nano-laminate films and cool-glazing material to reduce solar heat. The roof-top solar panels power an interior cooling fan to keep the inside from getting too hot.

The interior design of the Ray is sexy, using an open-air design and lightweight recycled materials. The sexy touch-screen instrument panel obviously won’t make it into production but is a great concept. The Kia UVO system is implemented into the car, giving owners a personalized “infotainment” experience. White leather and wool felt is used to create an “earthy” and open feel to the interior, and a honeycomb design is used throughout the cabin for strength, weight savings, and to tie the theme together. Mesh is used in the door inserts and seats and a lightweight alternative.

Powering the Kia Ray Concept is a 1.4-liter, 153 horsepower gasoline DI engine connected to a CVT. A 78kw electric motor powers the car when the gas engine isn’t needed. Low rolling-resistance 20-inch tires are fitted to the car, further increasing efficiency.

Kia says the Ray Concept can get 77.6 mpg in regular hybrid mode, and 202.3 mpg when in plug-in mode. They expect the car to have a range of 746 miles before you need to fill up, which is pretty damn good.

The Kia Ray Hybrid is more of a design concept than anything else, since the powertrain and technology offered don’t give us anything special. This is still important, since it proves you can have a good looking hybrid car that is still very aerodynamic. The Ray Concept’s coefficient of drag (Cd) is 0.25, which ties the 2010 Toyota Prius – the slipperiest car currently in production.

Even though Scion didn’t have any big unveilings or news during the 2010 Chicago Auto Show, they showed up with their usual eccentric display of customized cars and any new editions. They officially debuted the tC RS 6.0, and the xB RS 7.0 is present as well.

So, we’re back from the 2010 Chicago Auto Show. My flight got canceled and rescheduled due to weather, so I ended up missing the first two press conferences,Ford and Toyota. Whosever bright idea it was to hold one of the biggest auto shows in the world in the middle of Chicago’s winter needs to be shot. Regardless, we got some great information and images of the newest cars, unveilings, and concepts coming out of the industry this year.

First, I’d like to thank Bridgestone for being such a great host, providing travel, accommodations, grub, and a gift.

The first press conference of the day was Ford, who unveiled the 2011 Ford Edge, along with the Ford Transit Connect Electric and Connect Taxi, which will go into production later this year, allowing “commercial and government fleet operators to go gas-free.” The Transit Connect will be fully electric, and the Connect Taxi will offer a package allowing conversion to clean-burning compressed natural gas (CNG) or propane (LPG.) While not particularly exciting, it’s great news for everyone; having thousands of businesses in the US convert to electric, LPG, or CNG propulsion for the millions of miles they drive is huge news, and will open up doors to an infrastructure for consumer electric cars.

More big news from Ford is the MyFord Touch, a high-tech in-car connectivity option that integrates with SYNC and allows for lots of customization. I’ll give more details in another article, because this this technology looks as game-changing as SYNC was when it was first released. Ford’s display also shows off many new models including the new-engined 2011 Mustang and GT500, Fiesta, Fusion, and the redesigned 2011 Focus.

Toyota‘s conference was next, who along with apologizing for the catastrophic sticky pedal issues, unveiled the 2011 Toyota Avalon. Basically a higher-end evolution of the luxury sedan, the 2011 Avalon will go on sale beginning Spring 2010. Also on display is the upcoming Prius Plug-In Hybrid and FT-CH hybrid sports car concept.

Honda‘s conference announced the upcoming next generation Odyssey, which tries to take the boring minivan image out of the picture. Honda said they want to capture what they call the “hesitators” – folks who like the functionality of a minivan but don’t buy because of the vanilla, soccer-mom image that goes along with them. On display is the 2011 Honda Odyssey Concept; a slightly “extreme” version of how the production model will look:

The 2011 Odyssey will feature a V6 engine with variable cylinder management, achieving an estimated 19 city / 28 hwy mpg. Also on display at Honda is the CR-Z Hybrid:

Chevy‘s conference announced their new “Heavier-Duty Heavy-Duty” Silverado, though I was more interested in the Volt, Aveo, and Cruze on display. They also have some special edition Camaros lined up including the Camaro Transformers Edition (awesome) and Camaro Synergy Green Pacakge. Off in another section sit some modified Camaros and Corvettes, the most impressive of which was a highly-modified widebody Specter Werkes Corvette GTR.

Bridgestone was next, showing off a new line of fuel-efficient tires. The Ecopia EP422 line is a series of all-season, low rolling resistance tires built with recycled rubber. Bridgestone says the tires show a 36% improvement in rolling resistance compared to a typical tire, which converts to a 4% increase in fuel economy.

Kia was without question the best press conference of the day, being the only brand out of the bunch to remember what a high-energy, exciting, and fun press show is about. Starting out with a live band (The Rays) and beer, Kia brought out two of their Super Bowl mascots, then unveiled the cool new Kia Ray Hybrid Concept. And that was it for the press conferences of the day. Although none of the other manufacturers had any unveilings, many still had big displays with vehicles of interest…

Hyundai‘s superstar is the all-new 2011 Sonata, which turns out is quite an upgrade from it’s current-generation bland-mobile. Read more on the 2011 Hyundai Sonata. They’re also showing off the new Equus luxury sedan and funky-shaped 2010 Tucson SUV, along with the wavy-lined Blue-Will plugin hybrid.

Each year, the folks at the Chicago Auto Show put up a few live web cams around McCormick Place to allow anyone to take a look at what’s going on and even manipulate the cameras.

The show, which runs from Feb. 12-21, goes from nothing to complete in very short time. Log on to the live web cam site to take a look around. Not much to see right now, but check again in a few days and you’ll see them bringing in the stages and cars for the media preview on the 10th.
