Satellite radio, electronic GPS guidance and even wireless Internet connections on several luxury products provide a mere tip of the iceberg to what is currently available to vehicle occupants.

An exhibition that coincided with the 2012 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas provided a spotlight on all things high technology. Countless tablet computers, WiFi digital cameras and smartphones were the common spectacle of future electronics. Tempering with the usual balance of the CES in Las Vegas, representatives for the 20th century’s most pivotal invention (the automobile), brought some cutting-edge solutions for the 21st century’s demanding mobile technology world. In fact, Ford Motor Company took an innovation award away from the 2012 CES for their latest MyFord Mobile App.

On several occasions during the 2012 technology show in Las Vegas, a term began to swirl over automotive company products at a higher frequency than ever. The use of the term “The Cloud” was inserted into the presentation of several devices for the future of automotive infotainment. Instead of storing electronic programs and files on a physical hard drive or disk, information is stored through a virtual space called the “cloud”. As in-car electronic systems (most notably navigation services) progressed from the use of DVDs to hard drives that well surpasses many tablet PCs, the venture to the cloud for auto equipment manufacturers means limitless possibilities. The introduction of cloud computing principles have grown most prevalently with the popular navigation program called Google Maps employed on systems including the Ford SYNC and Audi MMI. Unlike previous GPS systems that either stored limited information or require time-consuming updates through a home computer, Google Maps uses a cloud interface to calculate routes. At the recent 2012 CES exhibition, auto companies are certainly becoming wiser to high-flying cloud computing ideals.

Making use of the open world of the cloud, Mercedes-Benz unveiled an upgraded version of their mbrace telematics suite of security and comfort connectivity features set for introduction starting the new SL roadster in the 2013 model year. An enhanced service, mbrace2 expands its reach in providing Mercedes-Benz occupants with a richer, even more connected electronic experience. Facebook, Yelp and Google Local Search are some Apps users of mbrace2 can expect immediately. Based on a cloud-based system, the mbrace2 system can be easily and conveniently updated allowing for delivery of an even greater selection of Apps in the future. The one necessity of cloud computing is a constant wireless connection. For the Mercedes-Benz mbrace2 system, Verizon will provide the subscribed service as it rolls out early this year.

With much of the auto sector devoted to the development of exclusive in-car infotainment solutions (i.e. MyFord Touch, Cadillac CUE, and Kia UVO), the outside stereo and car entertainment suppliers appear to have lost leverage on the marketplace. Other than the units created in-house or through partnerships, Aha by HARMAN have been making some serious inroads on the automotive infotainment market utilizing a cloud-platform. Launched as an iPhone App in 2009 as Aha Mobile, the web-based platform delivers an array of interactive products. Internet radio, navigation-related information, as well as audio dictation of Facebook and Twitter messaging is obtained through the Aha Mobile App that will also soon be joining the Android device marketplace. While Pioneer introduced the first automotive stereo system to incorporate Aha by HARMAN technology, the growth of the brand depends on forging relationships with the automakers.

During the 2012 CES, Subaru and Honda will be the first OEM deployment of Aha by HARMAN technology in the North American market. Demonstrated on a 2013 Subaru BRZ sports car at the 2012 CES exhibition in Las Vegas, the vehicle presented the new web-based entertainment options available through Aha by HARMAN. In the case of Subaru, customers can expect Aha by HARMAN to become part of what will be a “fourth band” of car radio joining AM, FM and satellite radio options on future vehicles.

Cloud computing principles will most definitely affect the evolution of an already growing market for in-car infotainment electronics. Late in 2011, Ford announced a brand-new MyFord Touch infotainment suite for their upcoming 2013 model year vehicles. As they outfit future products with the new in-car system, previous owners of Ford products featuring the first-generation MyFord Touch are being provided with an upgrade through a USB stick. While not a terribly labour intensive task, cloud computing solutions in automobiles would allow updates and improvements to be conducted near seamlessly.

For automotive consumers, cloud computing could unveil a reality where a car or truck could feature the same technological flexibility as an Apple iPad. Numerous Apps, limitless music and media storage, the most current road maps possible as well as effortless data sharing are advantages cloud-based vehicles can provide. Along with the expansive abilities of cloud-based in-car technology, new features such as voice recognition can be modified through software upgrades allowing motorists to immediately experience the advancements of technology (no longer a prize reserved for the purchaser of the newest vehicle). Among the only possible downside could be privacy and security of cloud-based systems. While all automotive uses of cloud computing engages methods to properly protect information, the future is as wide open as the cloud network for debate on this very accessible data.

The cloud computing integration with automobiles could also mean a buyer trading in their vehicle can take more than the custom floor mats and the air freshener with them to the next automotive upgrade. Contingent on the fact a buyer stays with a single auto manufacturer (at least for the time being), it will be highly likely all unique Apps and set-up information can be seamlessly passed to the next vehicle.

Information source: Ford Motor Company, HARMAN International Industries, Mercedes-Benz USA, Subaru

Photo source: Mercedes-Benz USA, Pioneer, Subaru

Related posts:

Laser Beams into Automotive Lighting Future

Mercedes F-CELL Roadster – Trainees Build A Car Of The Future

Look Who’s Talking: An Automotive Safety Future

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Ford Focus Electric Charges for Late 2011 Release

Car News

CES

Electric

Ford

2011 cars

2012 Focus

electric car

Focus Electric

ford focus

In an indirect way, the Ford Motor Company could be cited as bringing the first drain to the electric car. src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">

In an indirect way, the Ford Motor Company could be cited as bringing the first drain to the electric car. At the time of the auto manufacturer’s formation, the makeshift American roads were roamed by a multitude of power sources. Internal combustion gasoline engines were given a firm challenge from steam as well as electric powertrains. However, with the emergence of the Ford Model T in 1908, the gasoline engine’s inclusion in the most defining automobile shuffled the electric car into obscurity for more than 90 years. Facing an uphill battle as electric vehicles attempt to find a foothold in the modern auto industry, the pioneering influence to the automobile is joining the bandwagon reintroducing this alternative powertrain to the world market. Already retrofitting Ford Transit Connect vans with electric-propulsion, Ford Motor Company is now presenting a ready-for-production new Focus Electric.

Officially presented to the press at the 2011 CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas, Ford had long since braced everyone for an all-electric Focus. With the Wayne, Michigan assembly plant being the same facility which will built the 2012 gasoline-engined Focus, Ford long-earmarked for an all-electric compact vehicle to companion during production. A prototype Ford Focus Electric was even featured in a driving challenge on Jay Leno’s late night talk show during late 2009. Called the Ford Focus BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle), this nationally-featured five-door hatchback is now the ancestor to a production version due for sale late 2011.

While riding on the same platform as the gasoline-powered 2012 Ford Focus, the five-door hatchback electric version could be quickly distinguished. Featuring a chrome-slotted pattern, the entire front fascia is unique to the Focus Electric. Likely redesigned to optimize the electric powertrain, the reconfigured front end will also help provide fire and safety departments with distinctive markers in case of emergencies. Not every aspect of the Ford Focus Electric is built for a green lifestyle. Riding within the four tires, 17-inch aluminum wheels will be standard on the all-electric version of the Ford Focus.

<script type="text/javascript"

Encompassed in a climate controlled active liquid system, the battery can operate efficiently in severe heat or on cooler days. While the Focus Electric battery can be replenished through 120-volt current, an available 240-volt portable charging station provides more faster full changes. A wall-mounted unit to be sold at 1,200 Best Buy locations, the 240-volt power source needs only 3 to 4 hours to fully charge the Ford Focus Electric’s lithium-ion battery. Roughly the same charging time at the plug-in hybrid Chevrolet Volt, the Ford Focus Electric

Capable of a 84 mile per hour top speed, the Ford Focus Electric will be suitable for any North American driving. Thanks to torque-filled electric motor, acceleration should be comfortably punchy. Ford has yet to confirm official range of the Focus Electric. The Ford Focus BEV demonstrated 80 miles as a maximum range, Ford has promised the production Focus Electric will achieve at least 100 miles of driving distance between charges to put it on even par with the Nissan Leaf.

Featuring a high-tech powertrain, motorists will also take note of MyFord Touch technology playing an important role inside the instrument panel providing information on vehicle efficiency. Through MyView, a driver can access the real time electronic demands of accessories within the Focus Electric including the air conditioning. Other details such as the miles regained through regenerative braking also provides a thoughtful yet entertaining message to the Ford Focus Electric’s operation. Also included as standard convenience features on the Ford Focus Electric is a voice-activated navigational system, Ford SYNC, MyKey and a Sony Audio nine-speaker stereo.

Price information for the Ford Focus Electric has not been released but don’t be surprised if Ford Motor Company attempts to sell the vehicle under $30,000 when the car hits showrooms at the end of this year.

Information and photo source: Ford Motor Company

Related posts:

2012 Ford Focus Electric Garners 100 MPGe Rating, Production Starts This Month

Ford’s Electric Plans Charged Up for 2013

Focus (Ford Focus) Comes to 2011 Edition SEMA Show

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Toyota Becomes Entune with New Multimedia Unit

Car News

Car Tech

CES

Cool Stuff

Toyota

Entune

Toyota Entune

Today, many of us envy our smartphones in a similar fashion to how automobiles were excepted in the 1950s through to the 1970s. Eagerly awaiting the newest, more powerful designs meant to captivate, we look more for a fulfilling multimedia experience rather than the muscle to spin tires. Over the past few years, Ford’s SYNC system has provided, in many ways, a connection to the more tech-savvy customers who had been sharing a less intimate bond with automobiles than previous generations. Integrating cell phone and other media devices seamlessly into vehicles is becoming essential with Bluetooth-enabled technology a popular feature. Cited for possessing a rather mundane lineup, Toyota has shown-off a new Microsoft Bing-enabled, in-car multimedia experience which is certain to spice up its electronic creditability.

Introduced at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) 2011 in Las Vegas, Toyota rolls out their new system called Entune. Set to debut on selected Toyota vehicles throughout this year, Entune primarily provides a nexus point for many smartphones or other electronic entertainment devices to be used safely inside a vehicle’s cabin. USB and Bluetooth connectivity options is included with Toyota’s new multimedia system with voice recognition or controls easily accessible while operating the vehicle.

Allowing users to play music off MP3 players or smartphones, the Entune system offers two other unique mobile music and entertainment experiences. Clear Channel’s iheartradio provides over 750 radio stations for streaming including a wide range of genres and personalities. For personalized music stations, Pandora will be available in its first automotive OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) deal having also entering into deals with Pioneer and Alpine. Toyota tempts by suggesting the Entune multimedia experience can also be combined with a JBL sound system.

Besides in-car entertainment, Toyota’s Entune offers a series of navigation services. Utilizing Microsoft’s Bing search engine technology, Toyota’s Entune system can help a motorist find businesses and locations through either a touchscreen keypad or through voice recognition. Along with finding locales, Entune also connects to MovieTickets.com and OpenTable.com allowing a user to make day or evening plans at the press of a few buttons.

Toyota’s Entune multimedia system also brings a greater sense of automotive security. Working in conjunction with Safety Connect, Toyota says Entune provides “an added layer”. Vehicle Location Assistance, Automatic Crash notification and Roadside Assistance are features Toyota’s Entune uses to insure a safe as well as connected vehicle.

As of the announcement of the technology at the 2011 CES, Toyota has not specified which products will first offer the Entune multimedia system. Assuring that the Entune system is wirelessly upgradeable, Toyota intends the in-car technology will operate with the latest version even years after a vehicle’s purchase.

Information and photo source: Toyota

Related posts:

Toyota Recalling ANOTHER Car!

2012 Toyota Camry and Camry Hybrid Reaches New Lengths

Toyota aims to produce $50k hydrogen car by 2015

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts

Kia UVO – Taking on Ford’s Sync

Car News

Car Tech

CES

Kia

Ford’s Sync, developed by Microsoft, gives the driver voice-recognition which integrates into the car’s audio system, bluetooth, and navigation. It’s a good system, and until now, has yet to be rivaled by any other car maker.

The Kia UVO is the first rival to Sync, and is also developed in partnership with Microsoft. Kia just unveiled the system at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, and from the looks of it, will successfully blow the pants off of any other in-car infotainment system.

The Kia UVO offers voice-recognition, a 4.3-inch LCD touch-screen display, bluetooth, digital jukebox, 5-disc CD changer, and expandability options. On the steering wheel, the driver gets a “haptic wheel,” which is a knob that varies its feedback based on the menu options on the screen. Seven different modes of reactive feedback (see below) let the driver feel the selections, rather than see them. Kia’s goal here is to allow the driver to control the system without taking their eyes off the road. Take a look at the controls below:

UVO will also use your cell phone’s data network to download traffic and weather information, as well as vehicle diagnostic data and emergency alerts. This new “Telematics” system will work on GSM, CDMA, and 3G high-speed data networks, and I imagine this technology will be adopted by other manufacturers very soon as well, given its incredible usefulness. The UVO also allows for live, in-car digital TV via a rear-seat entertainment system.

One of the coolest things about the Kia UVO is the “widget” framework, which displays on the main idle screen when nothing else is in use. Through the widgets, you can add different information to the screen to read at a glance, including news, RSS feeds, weather, traffic, schedule, stock ticker, social networks, car diagnostics, and other info. While the car is off, the driver can scroll through the info via the touch screen, and once the car is moving they can use the scroll wheel to navigate.

The Kia UVO also has many of the other features you’d expect like voice-recognition that integrates into navigation and bluetooth, a digital jukebox with five-disc CD changer, and rear-backup camera. Users can add HD radio and a few other add-ons. UVO allows a bit more cell phone connectivity than most systems, though. In addition to the Telematics data system described above, the system will read your text messages aloud to you, hopefully cutting down on all those jerks who text while driving.

Check out this video of the Kia UVO system below, hosted by some dude who sounds kind of like Christopher Walken:

Head over to Kia Buzz for more information and images on the UVO.

Related posts:

Chevy Taking Orders for the Volt – Pricing Announced

Hyundai Veloster Concept – Taking on Scion

Cadillac CUE Promises Leap In Automotive Infotainment

Automoblog.net - A Car Blog for Auto Enthusiasts
