Audi’s Electricity Untamed Campaign Hints at Electric R8

Electricity Untamed

Audi just released a mysterious microsite and two funny videos dedicated to an Electricity Untamed theme, which hints at an all-new, electric sports car from the German brand. The website ElectricityUntamed.com scrolls through quite a few facts about electricity, and has a countdown timer in the upper-left, which will end during the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 15, 2009, indicating the new car will be unveiled then.

The dot-sketch you see above resembles a modified Audi R8 in more than a few ways, but that doesn’t mean it’s based off of the supercar. The car unveiled will most certainly be a sports car, and will definitely be impressive.

Check out the videos after the jump: Continue Reading…

2009 Audi TT S-line Review

2009-audi-tt-09.jpg

In this automotive day and age, there is an overabundance of sporty coupes to entice any driver’s appetite. Is a requirement to have something fun, but budget-conscience? Consider the Mazda RX-8 or the Hyundai Genesis. Need something a bit more extreme? Try a Chevrolet Corvette. If luxury is an important part of the equation, BMW and Infiniti can help with their gorgeous 1-series and G37 coupes.

So where does Audi’s TT coupe fit into this mold? Where does it fall on the sporty spectrum? Does it even deserve to be called “sporty”? That’s going to be a tough question to answer. Continue Reading…

Audi Designs a Bosendorfer Grand Piano

AudiBosendorfer.jpg

And the say that politics makes for strange bedfellows … it turns out that Audi has an in house industrial design firm, cleverly called Audi Design (sort of like the Porsche outfit that designs watches and sun glasses). Apparently Audi is doing this partially as a celebration of their 100th anniversary as an automaker, and to a car guy, some questions naturally arise. Such as “Who’s Bosendorfer?” and “Who’s going to get the connection between pianos and cars?”

Well, if you just happen to be a car guy AND a musician, it might make a certain kind of sense. And as it turns out, I just happen to be a car guy and a musician.

2009 Audi S5 Review

2009-audi-s5-edit-14.jpg

Vehicles come and go in life. Some are remembered fondly, others are simply cast aside after a few years for something different, never to be thought of again. But those rare cars, ones that make people smile when they’re remembered, never leave the mind.

For me, the 2009 Audi S5 will be one of them.

Arriving late to this shindig in 2007, the A4-based two-door comes in two flavors, the A5 comes in V6 “mild” and the more-powerful S5 comes in V8 “wild”. The coupe competes against the perennial segment heavyweights such as the BMW 3-series and Mercedes CLK-class. It may not have the total sharpness of the BMW, nor does it have whatever made the Mercedes as popular as it is.

What the S5 does have is style, panache and power. Continue Reading…

Top Ten Sleepers In Production

This is a guest post by James from Car Throttle - your performance car experts!

A favorite genre of many auto fiends is the “sleeper” - a car that looks like grandma’s Mercury but goes like stink. In this day and age of flashy, showy performance - with all the standard body kits, huge spoilers and obnoxious red badging automakers seem to believe belong on performance cars, the sleeper is a dying breed. The streets used to be littered with them, too. Buick Regal T-Types with Grand National running gear and a freaking landau roof, Galant VR-4’s with turbocharged 4G63’s and 4WD stuffed into an innocuous Galant body, heck - even the Fox-body Mustang LX 5.0 was a sleeper, with the thundering fuel-injected 302ci “5.0″ (actually a 4.9L) V8 but none of the GT’s plastic trashy bodywork.

Still, for those that would rather not have any show with their go, there are still sleepers left to pick from - if you know where to look. Sometimes you have to look in the strangest of places, but you can find burly horsepower under the hood of some unassuming cars these days. Let’s take a look at the top ten.

10) Toyota Camry SE V6

camry

“A Camry? Really?” I know, I know. The Camry is the equivalent of the Antichrist to anyone that actually likes cars. But that makes it the perfect sleeper, at least in SE V6 trim. You see, under the hood is a very modern 3.5L 24v V6, which makes a rather considerable 268 horsepower coupled with a 6-speed auto.

Without a doubt, the rest of the car is mind-numbingly boring - but if you’re after velvety-smooth horsepower and strong mid-range in an utterly unassuming wrapper, the Camry SE V6 has got you covered. Just remember to take a No-Doz on long trips… the Camry might’ve misunderstood what “sleeper” means, and when you’re not smoking tires with your torquey V6, it’s likely to put you to sleep. Fast enough to embarrass a V6 Mustang, and good enough for 10th place. Continue Reading…

Is Subaru Moving Into German Territory?

2Subies.jpg

Is Subaru Moved Into German Territory? Or more precisely, “Has the 2010 Subaru Legacy Moved Into German Territory?” was the brief question offered up by the fine folks at Edmund’s the other day. Whether it was a coincidence or not, I happened to be thinking the same thing.
