Whether we are buying a multi-million dollar supercar or a few thousand-dollar used car, the goal is always to acquire a vehicle exceeding our expectations. While performance coming from under the hood is important to many motorists, an increased focus is devoted into discovering magic in the cabin.

Once owning a 1993 Pontiac Sunbird, I accepted the most awkwardly designed radio deck fed through a factory speaker set. The second-dumbest radio deck design (first being the oval-shaped system found in the 1995-1999 Ford Taurus), the cassette player on the Sunbird needed to placed ahead of the gear shifter lever as an ergonomic nightmare. Power and stereo performance were both scarce with the vehicle but I made it work for six years. Thankfully, automotive engineering and marketing minds in 2013 realize motorists expect a better value than what went into a 20-year old economy car.

The novelty of a factory-installed AM/FM radio has worn off. So has the concept of carrying a few songs on a small cartridge or disc is even out of fashion with modern audio entertainment. Today, we are bombarded with in-dash audio deck options allowing users to access wirelessly transmitted content through touchscreens or even via voice command. Streaming radio services such as Pandora and Aha Radio delivers a completely new level of choice. Since many of us have condensed our personal music equipment down to a MP3 Player or an Apple device, almost every new vehicle provides an integrated connection to the on-board audio system. Listening to music at a consistent digital quality, it makes sense to have a capable sound system. Unless you have a premium system, the factory sound equipment lags as manufacturers routinely attempts keep costs down. Though we can expect adequate sound quality, aftermarket equipment can often bring out more vibrancy whether you’re listening to a rap track or classical music.

Upgrading an in-car sound system is a very involved procedure that could consume a hundred to well over thousands of dollars. An audio system upgrade often starts with a new set of speakers. Factory speakers are often constructed using paper and foam providing poor sound performance as well as a low lifespan. Aftermarket speakers can usually comprise of high quality materials such as woven fabrics and aluminum. Along with better materials, aftermarket speakers utilize sophisticated designs greatly allowing occupants to enjoy a fuller audio experience. Not only will the sound quality improve with the aftermarket speaker set, the equipment will offer improved reliability.

Beyond speakers, a sound system in a car could be aided by an amplifier and/or subwoofer. The amplifier is to the stereo system what a supercharger is to a V-8 engine. Greatly boosting the power provided to the speakers, an amplifier can help deliver optimal sound system performance. While amplifiers can be added to factory sound speakers, the best results will come when matched with high qualify speaker units. For those wanting to achieve an intense bass performance with their in-car stereo setup, a subwoofer will be the ideal. In addition to the amplifier and the subwoofer, audiophiles will likely opt for equalizers, crossovers and signal processors to achieve the maximum sound quality from their mobile music machines.

The before-stated upgrades are suited for new cars with a good quality stereo deck. Older vehicles might benefit from one of the latest units from Pioneer, Kenwood, Alpine or JVC. MP3 integration, satellite radio and even touchscreen operations can soon be incorporated in almost any vehicle.

Since I mentioned my Pontiac Sunbird, I may not qualify as an audio expert in your eyes. Due to the complexity of electronics and a desire to customize the system to individual tastes, you’re recommended to carefully study plans for installing upgraded audio equipment.

With the typical cost of insurance claims and the inevitable he said/she said battles after an auto accident happens, wouldn’t it be great if you had some proof to back up your story? The security offered by Dash-Cam technology is unprecedented and the latest offering from Blackvue goes even further – the Blackvue Wi-Fi DR500GW-HD offers a true “black box” recording device that will document everything from your GPS location, rate of speed, audio as well as 1080p video. There is no on/off switch which is actually a good thing – the Blackvue turns on when you turn on the ignition and records until you turn the car off. When paired with the option Power Magic Pro add-on, the Blackvue uses motion detection and the built in G-sensor to switch itself on and record events that happen while your car is parked!

Not only is the design sleek and modern, but the device is smart phone enabled with apps for both iPhone and Android platforms. In fact, setting up the Blackvue is straight forward and I was able to configure the device to my liking straight from my iPhone without any issues at all. It was honestly as easy as mounting the Blackvue, plugging it into power, switching my phone from my home network to the Blackvue’s and off I go. Ten minutes and I was already watching recorded videos right on my iPhone screen.

The accompanying desktop software application is available for both PC and Mac and provides many of the same features available on the mobile app with a few key additions. Selecting a recording is managed from a calendar which makes finding a specific video very easy. The MyWay map viewer is cool and even uses Google Maps for an interface you already know. And you can export your videos as MP4 (in Windows) for native play-back.

Positives

Auto-on capability means you set it and forget it

Small footprint keeps the camera out of sight

Mobile app for easy installation and playback

Comes with 16 GB micro SD card and reader

Negatives

Mounting surface is semi-permanent making swapping vehicles more difficult

Image can’t be rotated on the camera (but can be rotated within desktop software) so check your video before actually mounting for the first time

The Verdict

I found the Blackvue Wi-Fi DR500GW-HD a fantastic solution for anyone looking for more security during their daily commute. As an auto-enthusiast who enjoys a track day every now and again, I can confirm that the Blackvue does double-duty by providing peace of mind in my daily commute while also allowing me to critique my track sessions.

With the built-in GPS, G-Sensor and MPH readout you even get some basic attributes of an on-board data acquisition system for a fraction of the cost. I own and use other video recorders at the track and Blackvue’s quality and ease of use has made it my race camera of choice.

Head over to the official Blackvue website for more specs on the Wi-Fi DR500GW-HD or check out the Amazon.com page for the cam to pick it up for a discount.

MSRP $379.99

Note: When iPhone is connected to BlackVue DR500 Wi-Fi you’re not getting any Data Access for other apps. Here’s how to fix it:

Go into Wi-Fi Settings and tap the blue arrow against BlackVue connection, enter the following settings: IP Address: Static; IP Address: 192.168.8.2; Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

You’ll now be connected to your dash camera as well as getting data over cellular. See this image for details.

We often see this when a car comes back from the dealer or mechanic who’s done a tune-up. A complete tune-up is filters, fluids and new spark plugs, but modern engines don’t consume these at nearly the rate of previous generations. So what’s the trick that mechanics are using to get an engine back to balance after many hard miles?

For years it’s been a solid three-step kit that 3M provides to OEM dealers and shops across the globe. Detail tweaks make it easier to use than ever – something even a DIY home mechanic can tackle with confidence. It takes about two hours start to finish and can be done solo or with a buddy.

Let’s dive in to some of the new kit’s changes and the advantages they offer for normal guys who’d like to restore engine performance, smoothness and efficiency lost over the years of driving.

The 3M kit comes in three steps and includes really thorough and helpful instructions as well as a DVD walk-through that make performing this maintenance a piece of cake. The main thing you need to locate in your engine is the throttle body box, which needs to be opened for access in step one, and ideally removed for thorough cleaning in step two.

Before you head out to the driveway, you’ll need: basic hand tools like a flat-head screwdriver, rubber gloves and eye protection glasses.

Step One: Intake System Cleaner used to be the most challenging step of the process, but with this re-launched kit the intake system cleaner bottle has a locking actuator trigger that precisely regulates the flow of cleaner into the running engine. The product mists into the engine via an easier-to-use straight hose that directly applies cleaning solvents around the combustion area, valvetrain and intake manifold. Once locked on, the can takes about ten minutes to drain and the 3M team recommends keeping the engine between 1500 and 2000 RPM during the process.

Step Two: Throttle Plate Cleaner: the throttle plates are notorious trouble areas that accumulate tons of carbon deposits and caked-on gunk. Anything that is built up in there limits the movement of the butterfly valve and is the lead cause of ‘racing’ and lumpy engine idles. The kit includes a jet nozzle to blast away the deposits with the same level of cleaners as the professional product.

Step Three: The easiest step is the last one, the Complete Fuel System Cleaner that you simply tip into your car’s gas tank.

Each of the three products are available individually but are designed to work together for the best possible results. We’ve all seen the dozens of miracle fuel additives that all make some very bold claims but generally don’t deliver any noticeable change. This kit’s focus on the intake and throttle body as the trouble spots highlights the importance of treating the engine’s front end before solvent cleaner is diluted into gallons of gasoline.

The 3M Fuel System Tune-up kit is available now at Autozone, Pep Boys, NAPA Auto Parts and Amazon for under $40 (plus a $10 rebate from Amazon) and is recommended for use once a year or every 10,000 miles. You’ll be proud of your work and will see noticeably improved performance and fuel economy.

Have you used a fuel system cleaner like this and see good (or bad) results? Think these types of kits help or just marketing hogwash? Share your experiences in the comments!

A main defence against the release of environmentally harmful exhaust gases, catalytic converters design celebrates 40 years of reducing carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and oxide of nitrogen emissions from vehicles. Using special metals and materials to change hazardous exhausts into less serious emissions, catalytic converters perform a meaningful environmental role making automobiles tolerable for life on Earth.

When mandated on vehicles for the 1975 model year in the United States, some argued the effectiveness of the new emissions control concept. Early catalytic converters were connected to dramatic drops in performance from the heyday of the muscle car era and even linked to fuel economy reductions. However, automotive engineers eventually found methods for regaining horsepower. Today, we accept the catalytic converter as a necessary device.

As an auto part, the catalytic converters are a costly replacement item. Typically ranging from $300 to as high as $1,000 at reputable auto service centers, the price of the catalytic converter reflects the use of valuable materials found inside the device. Based on the external location of the catalytic converter, this unit have grown increasing enticing for thieves. A crime noticeably on the rise with the price of precious metals climbing, theft of catalytic converters occurs often in parking lots. Vehicles with higher ground clearances such as crossovers and trucks are the easiest to access. Theft of a catalytic converter requires just a few minutes for a criminal with a cordless power saw. According to auto insurance company Nationwide, some scrap yards are paying thieves between $100 and $150 for a stolen catalytic converter. While many creditable scrap yards will curb thieves from dealing stolen parts, the crime still exists. To reduce theft, a number of proactive and preventive measures can deter criminals of this growing auto parts crime.

When parking your vehicle in a public lot for a long period, it is suggested you find areas that are well lit and secure. Since catalytic converter theft still requires thieves to operate with stealth, making sure your vehicle is well in sight is park closest to a main building.

For those who want to take extra measures to prevent their catalytic converter from being stolen, several anti-theft products exist. A general anti-theft alarm system can warn when the car is moved. Specialized anti-theft measures that can protect the valuable exhaust component. Several major auto part suppliers offer a catalytic converter lock device or alarm. Trouble is most of those devices cost roughly half as much as the catalytic converter itself.

An action growing in popularity is etching the catalytic converter with an identifying marker. Several companies provide services to professionally mark the catalytic converter. A company collaborated with Ford of Europe, Retainagroup Limited provides a service that uniquely code a catalytic converter with a plaque. This plaque is fastened to the catalytic converter in a fashion it is hard to remove and thereby difficult to offload. According to United Kingdom based company Retainagroup Limited, marked vehicles are 55 percent less likely to be stolen. Either thieves are deterred from the marking or the catalytic converter is easily identified.

While the theft of hubcaps and stereo systems proved popular in the past, catalytic converters have been the unlikely eye candy for thieves. However, with the use of low and high tech solutions in addition to responsible business practices of businesses, catalytic converters can remain in place for protecting the environment.

Based on their recent performance in the marketplace, it’s clear General Motors and Ford Motor Company are two car manufacturers operating in high gear. As spirited as the rivalry is between the two automakers, there has been reasons for the companies to cooperate.

Normally, we are used a brand rivalry enriched the North American car culture. In the 1950s into the 1960s, Chevrolet and Ford battled fiercely for sales supremacy. Car to car battles have always been a treat to fans of American motoring. Corvette versus early Thunderbirds, Cadillac versus Lincoln, Mustang versus Camaro as well as F-150 versus the Silverado/Sierra pickup trucks are storied machine adversarial bouts. On the race track, the old Trans-Am Series and now NASCAR stock car racing has expanded the battle of Ford and General Motors car brands. Understandably creating dissention among car enthusiasts, the battle between the Ford Fusion and the Chevrolet SS on the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is merely one outlet for contentiousness. So fierce is the competitive nature of Ford and General Motors brands, the sale of cartoon images urinating on an opposing car make has been a brisk seller. A reality hard for brand loyalists to accept, sometimes competing figures need to work collectively. Seeking new heights in gearing, General Motors and Ford will be jointly involved in the creation of a new family of automatic transmissions.

Intended for a series of upcoming cars, trucks and crossover vehicles, the Ford Motor Company and General Motors has announced their engineers are working together on a 9-speed and 10-speed automatic transmission. So involved is this newly confirmed partnership, GM vice president of global transmission engineering Jim Lanzon says, “Engineering teams from GM and Ford have already started initial design work on these new transmissions,”. For what promises to be ultra-smooth, fuel-efficient transmission, the number of gears planned on the automatic gearboxes under development is strikingly high. As luxury carmakers begin adopting eight-speed automatic transmissions, the use of a nine gears is only starting to be incorporated into vehicles. The Range Rover Evoque became the first vehicle entering production with a nine-speed automatic transmission sourced from ZF Friedrichshafen. The ZF gearbox had also been announced in relations to Chrysler Group vehicles including the 2014 Jeep Cherokee. Besides the General Motors/Ford alliance in nine-speed transmission development, Mercedes-Benz is another automaker working on automatic transmissions using nine gears. No automaker has yet released a 10-speed automatic transmission for passenger car use.

This is the second time General Motors and Ford Motor Company are working together on a transmission unit. The 6F or 6T Series of six-speed automatic transmissions created through an agreement in 2002 have handled energy for many front-wheel and all-wheel drive vehicles. The six-speed automatic transmission debuted in 2007 model year for vehicles such as the Ford Edge, Lincoln MKX and the GMC Acadia. This partnership has led to eight million and counting examples of the six-speed automatic gearbox.

Besides manufacturing a high-tech, reliable transmission with the six-speed transmission, General Motors and Ford saving a considerable of money in the development costs. The endeavour into a 9-speed or 10-speed automatic transmission is going to be another case where the two automakers will benefit from each other’s role. Ford Motor Company‘s Chief Engineer of Transmission & Driveline Component & Pre-Program Engineering stated, “The goal is to keep hardware identical in the Ford and GM transmissions. This will maximize parts commonality and give both companies economy of scale,”.

As the 9-speed and 10-speed automatic transmissions remain in the development stages, General Motors and Ford Motor Company have yet to announce specific vehicle models for the advanced gearboxes.

It’s no shocker that we’re addicted to oil in the States, but rarely do we ever see the difference between America and European usage and cost of ownership.

In the States, we don’t have much in terms of public transportation, and despite loads of plans (mostly concepts) and proposed rail networks in the US, it’s very unlikely to happen any time soon.

I’m from the US but have been traveling Europe for over one year. Want to know how many times I’ve driven a car out of necessity (not for a car review or piece for Automoblog)? Twice. I’m serious. Try doing that in the US and you’ll sticking around home for most of your life unless you’re in a pillar city like New York, LA, Chicago, etc.

Given, the US of A is an enormous country and our infrastructure was simply built around traveling by car. I’m not criticizing; I love driving and the freedom it entails. But seeing, in comparison, how much less expensive it is for us to drive in the US is a bit shocking. Despite our cars having half the average fuel economy as Europe (there are LOTS of tiny cars over here,) our fuel prices are $2.72 less than the standard 60 country average. People, this isn’t going to last forever.

In my personal experience: I just traveled around France a bit, and a drive on the motorway of a little over one hour acquired a toll of 9.90 Euros (nearly $13.) I’m working from a cafe in London today and looking across the street, the petrol station says 136.9 p/L for Unleaded 95 (that’s pence per litre, and 95 octane unleaded.) Without bothering myself to do math, that’s damn near $10 per gallon.

Take a look below to check out more delicious info in pretty graphic form.

Whether you are enjoying candies Easter Sunday or have memories of the traditional hunt, many of us have been excited with the sight of an Easter egg. Growing up on DVDs, we have given grown accustomed to hear the term “Easter egg” when referring to a hidden items in some movies. As motorists, we continue to indulge in vehicle equipment that can be classified as an Easter egg.

Easter eggs related to automobiles consist of unique features making the ownership experience just a little more special. Like a uniquely painted Easter egg, the features define a single model or an isolated assortment of vehicles. However, past Easter egg features in motoring have hitched and multiplied. Ford SYNC, OnStar and even stop-start technology have grown to be widespread hatchlings in modern vehicles.

In 2013, a new batch of Easter egg features will delight motorists in current or soon-to-be released vehicles.

2014 Honda Odyssey HondaVac

The minivan sector has a habit of adding Easter Egg-type features in order to define otherwise boxy, difficult to define shapes. Rear passenger DVD entertainment and unique seating options are some features auto companies have used to triumph over each other in the minivan class. A low-tech Easter egg, the Honda Odyssey gained notoriety for its coin holder. At the 2013 New York International Auto Show, Honda’s upgraded version of the Odyssey minivan really sucks (in a positive way).

The first of its kind on-board vacuum unit, HondaVac the most sanitary motorist will not need to fret over dirty shoes or cookie crumbs. Integrated into the 2014 model year Honda Odyssey with cooperation between the auto company and Shop-Vac, the on-board vacuum is a powerful electric unit.
The thrill of purchasing a convertible is having the beaming of natural light surrounding you as you drive. Having just left winter, most of us in North America have not been thinking of acquiring a drop-top. Sunroofs can serve the need for sunlight often creates an oven-like experience in a vehicle’s cabin. In 2011, Mercedes-Benz recognized the dilemma by creating an intelligent sunroof system for their retractable hardtop SLK Roadster.

Using nano particles charged by an electrical current, the Mercedes-Benz SLK Roadster’s Magic Sky Control Roof could alter the illumination level. Controlled either by the driver or through an automated system, the Mercedes-Benz Magic Sky Control Roof allows maximum brightness on cooler days. Under scorching sun, Magic Sky Control Roof can automatically adjust to a darker shade to aid the climate control system in preserving a cool temperature. As of 2012, Magic Sky Control Roof system is added to the Mercedes-Benz SL model.

Since the Ford Mustang, automakers have challenged themselves to create low-priced vehicles appealing to younger drivers. Without making young new car buyers feel like they’re shopping for econoboxes, offering exciting standard or available equipment is the answer to winning over customers. With electronic connectivity proving popular, Chrysler Group vehicles provided a few Easter egg features to enhance the driving experience.

On the now-discontinued Dodge Caliber, a Chill-Zone beverage cooler in the dash panel could keep up to four drinks at a refreshing temperature. The Caliber and platform-mate the Jeep Patriot also offered a unique sound system feature. Originally called Magic Gate on the Dodge Caliber, a pair of Boston Acoustics audio speakers mount on the vehicle’s liftgate. Designed for camping or other social gatherings, the liftgate speakers can be folded down to create a party-like sound system.

Unfortunately, the unique features were surrounded by uninspired interior designs that for years haunted many Chrysler products. The Dodge Caliber has made way to the 2013 Dart but the Jeep Patriot remains for the 2014 model year.

2013 Toyota Avalon QI Wireless Phone Charging

Making vehicles connected has been the latest ambition of automakers. Adding Apple iPod jacks and USB connections, Bluetooth has also become a regular on new vehicles. The next trend is to integrate a special type of wireless device charger into new cars. General Motors and equipment provider Powermat announced early in 2011 intentions of putting wireless inductive charging units on vehicles for mid-2012. As of 2013, the Powermat based charging equipment has yet to be included on any Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet or GMC vehicle. With General Motors delaying in-car inductive charging, Toyota has decided to be the auto company to bring near effortless to operate hardware to motorists.

Included in the 2013 Toyota Avalon Limited model, the wireless charger technology employs Qi interfaces. Unlike the Powermat system that requires a special accessory to be retrofitted to a phone, the QI system is built into devices. The LG Google Nexus 4 and Nokia Lumia 920 are early adopters of a promising charging standard. Attachments are available for other smartphone devices.

Rolls-Royce Wraith’s Satellite Aided Transmission

When you spend $320,000 for a vehicle, it’s easy to say you have high expectations the vehicle. When Rolls-Royce introduced the two-door Wraith at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, the super luxury carmaker was required to explore the heights yet unattained by current vehicles. A personal luxury car providing impressive performance and comfort, the Rolls-Royce Wraith’s 624-horsepower momentum will be funnelled through an eight-speed automatic transmission is guided by an additional influence.

The Rolls-Royce Wraith is the first-ever vehicle to have a transmission that uses GPS (global positioning system) data in the electronic decision making when shifting gears. Rolls-Royce’s Satellite Aided Transmission of the Wraith employment of navigational information not only adjusts precisely to the current road position but also has the power to plan gear selections for the road ahead. Maybe it is a bunch of over-engineering, but the Satellite Aided Transmission will permit the Rolls-Royce Wraith to roll smoother than almost any Easter egg.

There’s been an extensive amount of research into developing the technology between autonomous vehicles, but now we are witnessing an increased amount of interest from car manufacturers who are aiming to commercialize such vehicles.

The technology has been around for several years, and has been mostly been researched and developed by Universities and other technology institutions. The development has now shifted from the academic and technology researchers to car manufacturers such as Nissan, Volvo, Ford, Volkswagen, BMW and others who are looking to commercialize driverless cars over the next decade. Google have also been involved in the development and testing of driverless cars.

One of the main concerns behind such vehicles is the legal and liability issues that arise in the event of an accident. Who is responsible? The passenger? Or the car manufacturer? This is a legal concern which will have a major impact on the commercialization, and needless to say car insurance companies, will be a topic that will require a lot of refining. Nevada is actually the first state which has approved driverless cars on public roads, and will have a pivotal effect in the testing and progression of using such vehicles.

The following infographic takes a look at the leaders in driverless car manufacturing, and who will be the one that is most likely to start mass production. It also displays noticeable technology that is being used such as six different types of radars, sensors and cameras. Another feature included in this infographic are headshots and quotes from the heads of research and development from the car manufacturers.

So, who will when the race for the driverless car?

There is a new car atop the Top Gear performance lap time board called the Pagani Huayra. I think it’s time I put the latest Pagani creation at the forefront of your gearhead minds because I know it’s #1 on my ultimate wish list.

I mean that, and I’m not talking about your average wish list of attainable cars you would like to buy in the future, or even if you hit the lottery. If someone were to ask me if I could pick any one car in existence to make my own, it would be the Huayra. In my correct opinion it is the greatest car created to date, and it will be a while before anything quite as dramatic and amazing is created again. In fact until they make cars that fly with small jet engines and thrusters that are readily available to people for the price of a Ferrari, this is the most epic form of transportation out there. If the Chris Pine version of Kirk was going to have something that stuck to the ground with 4 rubber tires, this is the only thing he would get into.

I think I’ve made my point, but let us go over the performance specs of the car while we drool over the pictures. And oh…yes, before I go on here is a general pronunciation of the cars name. No it isn’t the Pagani (Hurr-ah), it is more like the Pagani (Who-why-ra).

I’ll start from the inside and go over the guts of the Huayra and move out from there. A Mercedes-AMG V12 powers this car; one which is specially designed just for the Huayra and by the way, has 2 turbochargers as well! It develops 730 cv (cheval vapeaur) which most people convert to 700 hp. However I took the trouble to do some math and found the true cv into hp number: 719.7 hp…now you can be an ass whenever someone says it only has 700…you’re welcome!

Obviously the power of the rather compact V12 is located in the right place: between the drivers back and the rear tires. This gives the car a 44% front – 56% rear weight distribution. They also went for the more brute RWD just adding to the excitement of the car, truly making you drive the car, and the monstrous howling scream of the quad exhaust outlets is enough to make a Chevy Volt wee itself. The whistle from the twin turbos sounds like the god of wind that it was named for, and might make a GT-R second guess its manhood.

Moving on to handling, this car is quite unique and has taken active aerodynamics to the next level! To begin with the entire body is shaped like a wing, but it also has 4 wings or aero “flaps” that deploy and retract independently to assist through cornering and braking. Through sensors the car can sense if it is unstable through a corner and deploy one or both of the front or rear flaps to gain more down-force and grip to the corner of the car that it is most needed. This video demonstrates the active aero in action on track…and on the street a wee bit.

This means it can corner at much faster speeds and remain stable. Under braking these also deploy to assist in stopping the car. This essentially means it can brake later, accelerate sooner, and carry more speed…period. The car also has active adapting suspension that stiffens or softens to provide optimum grip. For example, under braking, the front suspension stiffens and raises up to prevent forward body roll, keeping the nose from dipping and staying balanced. The body is made from carbotanium, which is actually stronger and lighter than carbon fiber. Who’da thought.

I don’t think the exterior of the car is quite as sharp and beautiful as the Zonda, but it’s just as shocking and more performance focused, and as I always say more beauty can be found in form following function than anything else. Look at a Formula 1 car for example…it is a discordant mess! Yet you know every piece is designed to make it faster, so it is beautiful to behold.

Having said that, the interior is what truly turns the Huayra into a Hyper-Exotic car. It’s modern and sexy while still looking faster than anything that’s ever been made before! It makes you want to be in the drivers seat, because if it looks like this, than the experience that awaits you must be equally mind-blowing. It’s organic and beautiful while looking purposeful and mechanical all at once. The mixture of leathers with carbon fiber and titanium… and the digital colorful screens on the dash, beside the analog gauges…it is perfect.

This is the perfect car. It is so original and so organic in its design but it’s also engineering perfection. Form following function, science and design side by side. But this should be a benchmark, not a one time pantomime expression of what a car CAN be No…this is the ultimate expression of what a performance car SHOULD be!

20 years from now, your average sports coupe should look almost as epic and beautiful as this, and should be able to do 200, not a mere 150. Because in 50 years we should be piloting cars that defy gravity and have turbine thrusters, or what have you. We as humans are constantly pushing boundaries, pushing ourselves to do more amazing and stunning things. Shouldn’t our cars do the same? 100 years ago people paid to see cars rumble around a brick track in Indianapolis at 70 mph. 50 years ago the Jaguar E-Type coupes did 149 mph at top end, and were considered the Veyron of their time. Car companies need to look to Pagani for the future. What’s considered the ultimate or the pinnacle now, should soon be considered the normal. As for now though, the Pagani Huayra is the best car in the world.

As many are aware, the gasoline engine dominated the past century-worth of motoring. Steam power disappeared in the 1920s while electric cars lost early 20th century momentum. Throughout the time gasoline power has held a stranglehold of the automobile marketplace, there had been one other propulsion choice making a small but effective impact. It was February 23rd of 1893 when a German inventor named Rudolf Diesel received the patent for his unique engine. Through a combination of trial and error (including one error that almost cost the life of the creator) as well as luck, Diesel discovered the principles that led to the engine and fuel that continues to carry the inventor’s name.

Specifically using high compression to force an air/fuel mixture to combust, diesel is known for several superior performance attributes. Impressive low-end torque development, high overall torque and robust fuel economy have been obtained with diesel engines. However, several downsides of diesel powerplants have been hurtful to fairly competing with gasoline on a global scale. History of diesel-powered cars defines a colourful automotive story.

Unlike the case with numerous powerplant options staking a claim to the horseless carriage, diesel engines was not immediately accepted as an automotive powerplant choice. Diesel powerplants were first developed for stationary and naval applications. In 1897, Adolphus Busch (known best as the co-founder of brewing giant Anheuser-Busch) obtained the first rights for use of diesel technology. It wasn’t until the mid 1920s that diesel engines would be considered for cars and trucks. Marketed initially to commercial truck operators, several early attempts to test diesel engines in passenger cars were performed by Stoewer and Citroen. The 1936 Mercedes-Benz 260 D would become one of the earliest production vehicles to tout diesel technology.

In 1929, Clessie Cummins spotlighted diesel power to North American audiences when he drove a modified Packard limousine 600 miles to an auto show in New York on what was said to be $1.38 worth of fuel. Struggling for years in selling diesel engines to the United States public, Cummins and his company set out to prove redeeming the powerplant as capable and reliable. More than a decade later, Cummins obtained headlines in the motorsport world when they fielded diesel power at the Indianapolis 500. First appearing in 1950, the Cummins Diesel Special in 1952 would be driven to pole position by Fred Agabashian. The 1952 Cummins Diesel Special was particularly notable for the incorporation of turbocharging. A heavy, unproven race vehicle, the Cummins Diesel Special retired after 71 laps due to mechanical issues. While Cummins never captured the Indy 500, the publicity work of the American diesel engine builder would ultimately cement the company as a future leader in the marketplace that would include involvement with Chrysler. The all-new Ram HD pickup truck contains the latest iteration of Cummins diesel power.

Though diesel power had achieved acceptance in commercial vehicles by the 1970s, the efforts to move the technology into passenger vehicles took center stage when the oil crisis caused drivers to place great emphasis on fuel economy. Volkswagen began testing diesel power and Mercedes-Benz became the first automaker to sell a turbo diesel engine in their vehicles. In the United States, the world’s largest auto company at the time (General Motors) would engage in a widespread effort that would have seen the automaker dominate the diesel passenger car market. Introducing the LF9 diesel V-8 engine in Oldsmobiles during 1978, General Motors proliferated the use of diesel during the 1980s across almost every vehicle they manufactured. An ambitious effort, the first major attempt for an automaker to embrace resulted in ultimate disaster. Widespread reliability issues and terrible performance characteristics resulted in General Motors humiliatingly ending the experiment in diesel passenger car technology in 1985. It would not be until the recent introduction of the Chevrolet Cruze Clean Diesel that General Motors has committed to sell a diesel-powered car in North America.

While American automakers resisted the development of diesel technology in a global scale indirectly stained by the failure of General Motors, the European marketplace began embracing diesel engines with better results. Near the end of the 1980s, there were several automotive products in Europe using diesel propulsion. Volkswagen Group made a lasting impact with their TDI (Turbocharged Direct Injection) diesel first with the Audi 100 in 1989. Turbocharged diesel and regular diesel engines would flourish in Europe because of expensive gasoline (a result of supply and high fuel taxes). Twenty years later, the European automobile market would have diesel engines powering roughly half of all new cars sold annually. For 2012, 50.8 percent of the passenger vehicles sold in the United Kingdom.

As diesel engines gaining worldwide interest, development into curing the technology’s aspects that are more troublesome have proven largely successful. Most notably, the rattling sound most people associated with diesel engines is reduced in the latest generation of the technology. Ongoing efforts have been underway in reducing the emissions of sulphur and NOx from diesel exhaust recorded as higher than burning gasoline. Lower sulphur diesel fuel introduced to North America in the mid-2000s was the first step in making “clean diesel” a reality. To lower the NOx levels, new diesel engines are constructed to treat the exhaust gases before they flow out of the tailpipe. Diesel particulate filters and the emission-reducing technology of BlueTEC have brought clean diesel.

Unforgettable when mentioning the successes of diesel power in the past several years is success on the racetrack. Though an Indianapolis Motor Speedway victory has yet to be realised, diesel engines have carried drivers to victories in various locales in the sports car world. The Audi R10 TDI diesel prototype sports car won its maiden race at Sebring in 2006 before becoming the first diesel vehicle to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Since the 2006 Le Mans victory, a diesel racecar from Audi or Peugeot has been the overall champions at the French track. Last year, the winning Audi R18 e-tron quattro was a TDI diesel combining electric power. New to the racetrack in 2013, a Mazda6 Clean Diesel car is competing in the GX class of the Grand Am Rolex Sports Car Series.

Having arrived in European and other areas of the world, the North American market remains the largely undiscovered for diesel. Existing as more of a tourist in a gasoline culture, Audi, Volkswagen and a line of Mercedes-Benz vehicles had made up most of diesel’s content in the United States aside from heavy-duty pickup trucks. However, this is quickly changing as the fuel-savings of diesel remains tempting for cars and manufacturers wanting to increase their fleet-wide fuel mileage average. The before-mentioned Chevrolet Cruze Clean Diesel, Porsche Cayenne Diesel, a new generation Jeep Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel and the Mazda6 Clean Diesel are new additions to dealership showrooms. More recently, Chrysler’s Ram division announced the extension of an EcoDiesel to the 1500 line of their pickup trucks for the 2014 model year. Hints of Toyota and Kia equipping some of their North American vehicles with diesel engine options have also been in the news.

A powerful source for vehicle propulsion, diesel has held tough thanks to various supporters over the past 120 years. Right now, it appears diesel is a burning answer to a burning question.

Expected to adhere to constantly changing criteria driven by government and consumer fronts, automakers have utilized the practice of building multiple vehicles off a single platform. Existing as a kind of foundation for automotive designers, vehicle platforms represent a series of standardized parts that can conform to various cars, trucks and crossovers. Defining a standardized platform has provided car companies with the opportunity to maximize their market reach in a cost-effective manner.

In some cases, platform sharing results in nothing more than a lazy effort in brand engineering. Several General Motors products built in the past 20 years (such as the Chevrolet Cavalier based J body vehicles) qualified as less than stellar examples of platform diversity. In contrast, there are several examples where the modern auto industry has created products transcending across a single vehicle category. Today, a one platform can used to deliver coupes, sedans, wagons, crossovers and even electrified alternative powertrain vehicles.

The following is some of the more popular vehicle platforms that we not even know are the basis of so many products:

GM Delta II

In earlier iterations of small car platform sharing had resulted in a rather chilly reception among the North American market (let along the all-so-important global spectrum). Created accepting that a greater focus must be placed on the compact car category, General Motors commissioned the Delta II chassis as a bold move to capture international acclaim. In a way perhaps no one could have predicted, the GM Delta II platform delivered on provocative boasts by the automaker.

The GM Delta II platform debuted in production when the Chevrolet Cruze was introduced to the international market in 2008. A compact car that focused less on being a budget-oriented option, buyers of the Chevrolet Cruze were acquainted with a heightened level of refinement and build quality. As the Cruze arrived in North America, positive press on the Delta II platform Cruze allowed Chevrolet to become a serious challenger in the compact sedan category. European models have also been treated to the Chevy Cruze in hatchback and even a station wagon body style. For the 2012 model year, North American motorists received a Buick version of the compact sedan based on the Delta II platform called the Verano. Several markets excluding the United States (Canada included) received a utility compact Chevrolet Orlando on the Delta II serving to the diversity of the General Motors platform.

Serving not only gasoline and diesel powered vehicles, the Delta II became noteworthy for powering the first major production model of a plug-in hybrid vehicle. Adding a large battery, electric motor and reallocating a gasoline engine as a “range extender”, the Chevrolet Volt coasts on similar underpinnings as a Cruze. At the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, a Cadillac ELR becomes the latest recipient of the Delta II architecture.

Developing what will become the Delta III platform, General Motors has aligned with PSA Peugeot Citroen. The General Motors/PSA Peugeot Citroen collaboration of the future small car framework is targeted, not only, to provide a single platform architecture to a multitude of vehicles but also incorporate advanced materials for the lower cost automotive market.

Toyota MC Platform

An industry born from modesty after the Second World War, Japan’s auto sector has been mastering the technique of sharing as many components as possible to build a fleet of vehicles. Toyota can credit much of their growth (and their recent reclamation of the position as the world’s top-selling auto company) to the fact they have mastered the ability of creating a global line-up of cars and sport utility vehicles using a handful of platforms. Without much doubt, the Toyota MC platform exists as the backbone of the auto manufacturer’s success.

While the MC platform is not a household name, many of the Toyota-related products constructed on the single source of technology can be found near the top of vehicle sale charts. Produced since 2006, the Toyota MC platform has been applied to the construction of small to mid-sized cars, sport utility crossovers, and minivans. In fact, the vehicles using the MC platform architecture accounts for the majority of the over two million Toyota Motor Corporation vehicles sold during 2012 in North America. Under the Toyota brand, the Corolla, Camry, RAV4, Highlander, Prius hatchback and Sienna are currently produced on the MC platform. Toyota’s luxury brand Lexus and youth-oriented marque Scion also use the same underpinnings. The ability to create multiple products from roughly the same basis has been performed near seamlessly acting as a benchmark for all other auto companies.

Seven years on the market, a next-generation replacement for the Toyota MC platform is presently under development.

Nissan D Platform

Recognizing the high upfront engineering costs of a platform, many auto companies have realized that sharing development between brands can help to greatly optimize their resources. Japanese auto company Nissan has enjoyed a close strategic and financial partnership with French car builder Renault. From 2000, platform sharing between the two companies have become greater. A utility player in a global marketplace for the Nissan-Renault alliance, the D platform offers the footprint for a variety of mid-sized vehicles.

The successor to the platform known as the FF-L, the D platform features a growing variety of Nissan’s top front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive products. In 2007, the Nissan Altima became the first vehicle built on the D platform followed shortly by the Nissan Murano and the Maxima. In other parts of the world, the D architecture is used for the Renault Laguna and Latitude as well as for two vehicles built under the Renault Samsung name in South Korea. Demonstrated early on mostly sedans (with exception to the Murano), the mid-sized vehicle platform would show utility. The eight-passenger Elgrand minivan was first sold as a luxury product through much of the Asian continent during 2010. In 2011, the latest generation Nissan Quest was granted a striking redesign based on the D platform. The Nissan Pathfinder’s migration from a truck-based utility to a large crossover vehicle is another high capacity offering on the same underpinnings as several other vehicles. Thanks to the sharing of platforms, finding the new Nissan Altima in Dubai is now possible.

Ford C Platform

As Ford Motor Company has been flourishing in North America, many would say several international markets exists as areas where the 110 year-old auto company is required to show even greater focus (excuse the pun). Though Ford has had a global presence since the Model T, their attempts to keep a profitable worldwide business model has faced challenges. For the most part, Ford believed that the answer for the European market was unique vehicles catering to the market‘s preference for smaller cars. However, financial constraints, global reputation building and changed vehicle buying attitudes have led to Ford’s development of a consistent global line-up.

For the most part, that has involved the North American importation of vehicles such as the Ford Transit Connect and Ford Fiesta. The Ford Focus had also been the crown jewel to what was intended to be a strong global presence. While a rough in the United States and Canada hurt the Focus, it also became a case where Ford fell into old habits when the company decided to completely reengineer the European model on a newer C1 platform while North American audiences settled on a redesigned version based on the older C170 platform. For the 2012 model year, the Ford Focus was finally harmonized again under what is known as the global C platform.

The basis for compact vehicles, the 2012 Ford Focus was the first vehicle that introduced North American car buyers to their C platform. A year later, the all-new Ford Escape was treated to a significant remodel on the latest generation platform. An addition to the US market last year, the Ford C-Max multi-purpose vehicle also displays the C platform. Hybrid and Energi plug-in hybrid models of the Ford C-Max demonstrated how modern platform development now includes the versatile application of advanced powertrain compatibility.

Ah, software updates. You’ve got to love the big ones that can take hours and require us to restart our computers (or phones, whatever the case may be). I’ve got one waiting on my phone right now for me – oh joy. We’ve all been used to software updates for our computers and phones.

Now they’re becoming more commonplace in our cars as well, and the possibilities are endless. Owners of Apple iOS and Google Android phones (sorry BlackBerry and Windows Phone….) are used to getting updates every once in a while that add new features and functionality, along with fixing bugs. Why can’t it be the same in our cars? It can. Of anyone, Tesla is perhaps the biggest innovator in this area. The Model S is run by an OS that is in touch with the car’s functions and connects to the Internet.

This enables Tesla technicians to check the car’s diagnostics remotely, as well as pushing software updates over the air. Other manufacturers are in the hunt for technology supremacy as well though. When the Cadillac XTS debuted at the 2011 Los Angeles International Auto Show, one of the headlining features was the Cadillac User Experience system, known as CUE. Since then, CUE has spread to the Cadillac SRX and ATS. With a capacitive screen, haptic feedback and a beautiful user interface it was heralded as one of the industry’s best infotainment systems. Like a lot of new software though, it is has its bugs. Buyers have noticed some lag, and that needs to be fixed as soon as possible. CUE design manager Jeff Massimalla told Wired Magazine that they’re working on a fix. “We’re hearing about haptics and the desire for quicker responses, and we’re making a modification that will be released sometime later this year” he says.

Glad to know that they are listening. Later this year is pretty noncommittal though – it could be in two months or at the end of the year. Hopefully for Cadillac users, it will be sooner than later. Massimalla says that the update will be done by Cadillac dealers. Customers will need to take their car in to have it updated, rather than doing it themselves via the car’s data connection. He says that as a Cadillac, dealers should be the one doing the work, not consumers. I’d rather just do it myself, but hey I’m not in the usual luxury buyer mindset. Ford has a lot of experience in dealing with software updates thanks to its MyFord system. The difference is that it has chosen to push these updates over the air. In addition to its interface, CUE is notable for its lack of any traditional knobs or buttons. According to Cadillac, future models may add them for certain functions – providing a blended setup. Learning what works and what doesn’t is all part of doing something new, and were glad to see that Cadillac took a bold step forward with such system. Can you remember all the hate that BMW received for iDrive? By contrast Cadillac says that feedback CUE has been “overwhelmingly positive” – save for the issue with a bit of lag. Hopefully the software update comes out soon and fixes it. Its an issue that can be fixes easily – CUE-enabled cars certainly don’t lack in processing power.

Automotive-related products and technology made an immense impact on the recently-wrapped 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. New, improved apps operating with Ford SYNC AppLink, refined dash displays and even a self-parking Audi were part of the spectacle set to change the way we drive in the future.

Claiming some major begging rights leaving the 2013 CES were two of North America’s major car brand. The 2013 Ford Fusion Energi was recognized as the most connected car for its plug-in hybrid flexibility. While the Blue Oval grabbed the headlines for an overall vehicle, the bowtie brand also gained accolades. The next-generation of Chevrolet’s MyLink infotainment system earned the recognition of CNET Best-of-CES Award among car technology displayed in Las Vegas this week.

An advancement from the entertainment and information array introduced in 2012, Chevy MyLink’s 2nd generation system is geared for better functionality through a eight-inch touchscreen. “Cabin tech interfaces receive a lot of criticism for being clunky, ugly and slow, but Chevrolet may have cracked the code by copying the smartphone,” said the senior editor of CNET Wayne Cunningham. The most user-friendly change coming to Chevrolet MyLink product is the incorporation of software that allows vehicle occupants to command the system through what is called “natural language voice recognition”. Instead of relying on specific phrases to activate functions through hands-free voice command, users of the new Chevy MyLink understands a wider range of voice prompts. General Motors advertises that the hands-free experience of the new Chevrolet MyLink would be like having a conversation with the vehicle.

Other advantages with the next-generation Chevrolet MyLink system unit is the ability to store as many as 60 favourite radio station, contacts and other travel information. Up to ten devices can be merged with the Chevrolet MyLink system through either USB or Bluetooth connection. OnStar also receives added functionality on the new Chevy MyLink infotainment system with an icon included on the eight-inch display screen in addition to the traditional blue button.

For a long time, have grown accustomed to see a model of automobile change significantly in a minimum of three years. When it comes to in-car infotainment systems, the push for advancement has caused a modification to that industry rule. It seems all automakers have realized it is not acceptable to wait until a mid-cycle refresh or vehicle redesign to introduce improved technology to customers. Ford Motor Company wasted little time to create an updated version of MyFord Touch in response to customer concerns in 2011. In the case of the new edition of MyFord Touch, the auto manufacturer prepared a software upgrade to new as well as already-sold vehicles.

The 2013 CES also saw another announcement come from Chevrolet in regards with technology. Touted as a global radio hub, TuneIn will provide drivers of the new Chevrolet Spark, Sonic and other MyLink Radio-enabled vehicles with 70,000 stations. With TuneIn, it is possible to stream radio broadcasts from a large list of countries around the world.

It took less than five years for the Apple iPhone to forever influence the way we consume and relay wide varieties of content. Shining light on the phenomenon of acquiring programs in the form of ‘Apps‘, Apple and its competitors now host a gigantic industry devoted to creating solutions to problems we never even knew we had. A Nielsen survey reported that 55 billion apps have now been downloaded to smart devices so far.

The first major automaker to foresee in-car infotainment as an experience that should be similar to operating a smartphone or tablet, Ford Motor Company’s SYNC brand technology is currently boasting one of the richest assortments of on-line applications. While Toyota, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz as well as most recently Subaru have just started to dip their toes into a pond of app-driven vehicle entertainment and services, the potential could see the still small body of water turn into an ocean in a matter of years.

The trick to integrating apps into automobiles is realizing technology’s fine line between aiding and distracting the driving experience. Ford’s initiative to collaborate and create the electronic mechanisms for controlling apps has led to voice prompting as well as Bluetooth connectivity. Ford SYNC AppLink allows select apps to be accessed hands-free.

At the 2013 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Ford has a pile of new apps that can operate on their voice-operated SYNC AppLink system to cater what is now over a million vehicles and counting.

BeCouply

A new Ford SYNC AppLink tailored app premiering at the 2013 CES, BeCouply is an interactive program suited for couples. Developed by real-life couple Becky Cruze and Pius Uzamere, the app was he winner of Ford’s annual SYNC AppLink Developer Challenge at the TechCrunch Disrupt Hackathon event. Receiving the Ford SYNC AppLink spotlight in Las Vegas as a prize for their award, BeCouply brings voice-controlled date planning. Helping couples develop a night out near spontaneously, BeCouply will respond to queries on where to take in activities or settle down to a nice meal.

Rhapsody

One of the more popular on-line, on-demand music sites on the Internet, Rhapsody streaming content is already listened to by 40 percent of users while driving. Now adding the functionality with Ford SYNC AppLink, Rhapsody wide library of content can be enjoyed in almost complete safety. With a base of more than one million regular users, Rhapsody streaming radio, downloaded music playlists and audiobooks can be summoned through hands-free operation in Ford SYNC equipped vehicles.

Also announced this new year, Rhapsody will be joined in the Ford SYNC AppLink forefront with similar competing apps Aha by HARMAN and Slacker radio.

Kaliki

If we were to believe the idyllic image of American life portrayed on 1950s television shows such as “Leave it to Beaver“, people used to sit down to read the morning newspaper prior to a trip to work. With longer commutes part of today’s world, a brief newsbreak from television or radio is about all the time we have to update ourselves on events during the working weekday. When driving a Ford SYNC AppLink product, downloading the Kaliki app onto your smartphone provides newspaper and magazine content on the go.

In essence, an on-line audio newsstand, Kaliki’s debut at the 2013 CES brings meaningful news stories to drivers for free. Titles such as OK!, TV Guide and Shape Magazine are available at launch with promise that additional titles will be added to the Kaliki library soon.

Another news app added to the Ford SYNC AppLink system is related to USA Today. Just like Kaliki, USA Today headlines will be dictated to occupants of an equipped Ford vehicles and can be navigated through voice commands.

Glympse

How many times have you waited in cold and/or wet conditions for a ride to come? Frustration builds when a driver may be running late towards a pick-up destination. It is not as much an issue that the person is late, rather why we must be left in the freezing cold waiting for them. One Ford SYNC AppLink enabled application will provide helpful notification.

Sending a real-time update on a location to a friend or family member, Glympse is a solution that conveniently relays an accurate connection between parties through an app. Needing only a tough of the SYNC button to commence, a driver’s voice prompt “send a Glympse” will notify specified others through Twitter, Facebook, and email or through a mobile phone number. Once sent, a Glympse notification will provide a recipient with an up-to-date account on whereabouts of the other member of their party until a set time limit is reached.

Greater Media Regional Radio

Despite a popular song from the late 1970s decrying that Video Killed the Radio Star, the listening experience of an audio broadcast remains part of driving. The difficulty regional radio stations are encountering at this time is trying to stay relevant in an app-driven environment. Competition from Internet radio is also a concern leading to some terrestrial broadcasters to seek integration. Owner of 22 radio stations in major American markets such as Boston, Detroit and New Jersey, Greater Media has developed a solution it is eager to share with Ford SYNC owners.

A collection of apps represent 16 of Greater Media’s radio properties, each one connects directly to live streaming. Free downloadable apps for Apple IOS and Android devices, the Greater Media apps can be operated through voice command on Ford SYNC by saying “Play stream” or “Stop stream”. Podcasts are even accessible by stating the name of specific programs.

Following Ford’s 2013 Consumer Electronics Show presentation highlighting their most recent products added to the SYNC AppLink library, its fair to say if other auto companies want to pass the Blue Oval, they’ll have to catch up to them first.

Transitioning through the first week of 2013, many of us have made resolutions devoted to improvement or to experiencing new places. This week, Japanese auto brand Subaru is taking a trek into Las Vegas to take part in the experience of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The 2013 CES will be the first time Subaru will occupy their own floor space at the sizable collection of new technology and electronic solutions. Accomplishing the feat of traveling to a new locale, Subaru’s stride for improvement comes with their own comprehensive vehicle technology designed to enhance the cabins of future vehicles.

Shining a bright light on some of the most progressive, technological aspects of in-car electronics, Subaru is revealing STARLINK at the 2013 CES. STARLINK is branded as a collection of Subaru infotainment products designed to be powerful yet affordable. The STARLINK brand will prominently be encompassed in Subaru’s touchscreen system. Offering navigation information, STARLINK will also feature speedy and smooth smartphone integration.

A major highlight to the roll-out of Subaru’s STARLINK suite is Internet entertainment made possible from Aha by HARMAN. Providing an assorted variety of Internet radio stations, newsfeeds and even audio books, Aha can also relay information vital to driving such as custom weather. All data utilized by the driver or user is saved in cloud storage (a virtual hard drive that can be accessed in the vehicle or through the Aha smartphone app). Subaru states that Aha by HARMAN is only one of what is intended to be a growing bundle of connectivity solutions STARLINK will furnish owners.

Collectively, Subaru advertises their addition of STARLINK and related technology as an all-around enhancement to the ownership experience. Fuji Heavy Industries Deputy General Manager Akio Takai explained that Subaru’s STARLINK needed to be a “value-added” array of vehicles features. “Our STARLINK connectivity strategy builds on the Subaru heritage of fun-to-drive vehicles that are recognized for best-in-class safety and durability.” said Takai.

After the 2013 CES, the wait for Subaru’s STARLINK brand of technology will be short. The inclusion of Aha is already slated for the 2014 model year Subaru Forester on all navigation-equipped vehicles as well as current Legacy and Outback. Impreza, BRZ sports car and XV Crosstrek being produced for the 2014 model year will also become benefactors of STARLINK during the summer.
