The 2017 Audi A4 is the 9th generation of a vehicle line, which in the past, has been known as the Audi 80, Audi Fox, and Audi 4000.
The new model is based on VW Group’s modular-longitudinal MLB Evo architecture.
However, the MLB Evo is an evolution of a chassis which first debuted in the 2007 Audi A5 coupe.
The 9th generation A4 is up to 265 pounds lighter than its predecessors.
The 2017 Audi A4 will be available with virtually every assistance system and electronic gadget that debuted in the all-new 2017 Audi Q7 SUV.
The U.S. Spec Audi A4 will launch with three 2.0 L turbocharged 4-cylinder engines. The gas engines will be available with either 190 HP/236 lb.ft.torque or 252 HP/273 lb.ft.torque.
The turbocharged diesel engine will produce 190 HP and 295 lb.ft.torque.
At launch, the A4 will only be available with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic and there is no word on if the U.S. Spec A4 will be equipped with a manual transmission.
The A4 can be equipped with either a front-wheel-drive system or Quattro all-wheel-drive. The higher output gasoline engine and the diesel will be equipped with the standard Quattro system.
In its construction, the Audi A4 will adopt more lightweight materials than any of its competitors. For example, some steering and transmission components, along with the rear-seat structure will be made of magnesium.
The multi-link front and rear suspension setups will incorporate larger amounts of aluminum too.
The front end features a low and aggressive, TT-inspired bumper and a well-integrated clam shell style hood results in a more angular and contemporary appearance.
Bi-Xenon headlamps are standard, but can be upgraded to an all-LED lit unit. The taillights also come in two versions with either conventional bulbs or LED lights.
The cabin of the Audi A4 is downright futuristic, compared to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the BMW 3-Series.
Horizontal lines dominate the cabin and the thin air vents span the entire width of the dashboard. The center infotainment screen is fixed in the A4, unlike the motorized versions available in the A3 and the A6.
This was a cost effective measure.
The standard instrumentation is comprised of a conventional, analog gauge unit, but can be upgraded to a larger TFT display screen.
The futuristic interior is actually a throwback to the Audi models of the past. The full-width air vents are similar to the ones in the C2-generation Audi 100/5000 from the 1970s. The automatic air conditioning with the touch sensitive, metallic buttons, is designed to mimic the 1970s aftermarket car stereo systems.
The 2017 Audi A4 sedan will go on sale in the U.S. early next year and will later be joined by the Allroad Station Wagon (sorry, the traditional A4 Avant will remain across the pond).
The A4 will be available in Premium, Premium Plus, or Prestige trim levels.
The S4 will arrive late 2016 and retain the 3.0 L turbocharged V6 engine.
The vaunted Audi RS4 might return to the U.S. and will likely pack a new twin-turbo V6 engine. If and when it shows up, it will likely be offered as a sedan, rather than a wagon, like the current generation RS4.
