Update: I was wrong, Saleen didn’t unveil a new hypercar, they showed a new line of Heritage Collection American muscle cars (Mustang, Challenger, Camaro). That explains the…ahem…brief tone of the email from Saleen pre-unveiling.
Remember Saleen? They’re the California-based tuners that have modified the hell out of Mustangs since the ’80s but haven’t made many waves lately.
They stuck with Mustangs until 2000, when they managed to build what is still one of the fastest supercars in the world and their first standalone product – the sexy and extreme Saleen S7. A few years later, they bolted on a couple turbos that made the car produce up to 1080 hp to the rear wheels. The 750 hp version could hit 248 mph – imagine what the version with 1080 ponies could do. Proper insane. Sadly, production of the S7 ended in 2007, leaving a few lucky bastards to own one of the 58 (or so) ever made.
In 2008, Saleen brought their S5S Raptor Concept to the New York Auto Show and told everyone it made 650 hp from a supercharged 5.0-liter V8 that could get it from 0-60 mph in 3.2 seconds. That’s the car you see in the pictures.
But since then, we’ve heard nothing from Saleen. Crickets, save for a few more Mustangs and adding the Camaro and Challenger to their “tuned by” list.
This weekend at the 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, Saleen is holding a press conference to unveil a new car. A hypercar? Probably. Either way you can bet that it’s not just another supercharged Mustang.
This is gonna be big. When it comes to hypercars like the S7, Saleen’s been on top of it, competing with the fastest supercars at the time.
I certainly wouldn’t expect a trendy hybrid supercar from a muscle-machine-building company like Saleen, but I would expect it to be on a similar level of performance.
Will it be a revised version of the S5S Raptor Concept, or something entirely new?
We’re going to find out on Saturday, around noon Eastern time. I’ll be standing by watching – I can’t wait to see what they’ve come up with.
Here’s what the Saleen S7 TT looks like if you can’t remember:
