The bad thing about corporate design languages is that if you hate them, a certain look is spread throughout a brand’s lineup. Starting with the 2013 GS, Lexus set about defining a unique look for itself.
The centerpiece of that is the spindle grille, which has quickly spread across the lineup to models like the 2013 RX and ES sedan. Now, it is the flagship’s turn. The current LS was introduced as a 2007 model with an all-new platform. Lexus decided that the car was fresh enough to avoid a full-redesign, and instead has issued a pretty heavy mid-cycle enhancement for 2013. It begins (of course), with the exterior. We can confidently say that this is one of the best applications of the spindle grille yet.
And not only that, but it looks much better than the model it replaces. Not just different, but better. For 2014, the LS adds some boldness. The added aggressiveness makes the current car look benign in comparison. For Lexus, the 2013 LS is moving the needle forward. Inside, the story remains the same as the exterior: Lexus is sticking to a defined template that started with the GS.
The vertical center stack layout of the current LS has been ditched for a horizontal orientation. A beautiful wood piece spans the dashboard, and textures and surfaces have been upgraded significantly. Lexus didn’t stop with appearance though; there are boosts to structural rigidity, new shock absorbers and a retuned steering system. The current LS has never been criticized for being too loud, but reductions were brought in this area as well thanks to more insulation and specially-designed tires. Like other Lexus models, the LS has gained the F Sport trim level. It includes a lowered, sport-tuned suspension, appearance package, Torsen limited-slip differential and Brembo brakes, among other things. For 2013, the LS has a lot more visual presence and the luxury quotient has been turned up significantly. Also, for the first time you can get an LS with a sporty twist. Now we’ve seen everything.
