When the current BMW 6-Series was introduced, it was one of the first BMWs to mark a classically good-looking return to form for the brand. The previous generation car was introduced at the height of Bangle-design in 2003, after a 14 year hiatus.
We never hated the Bangle-cars, but for most there is no denying that the current 5, 6 and 7 look better than their previous-generation designs. As such, the 6-Series is a looker. In its standard form, it serves as a large, not terribly sporting luxury grand tourer. Convert it into M and it gets a jolt of excitement.
The M6 has got to be one of the best-looking production BMWs ever.
The proportions are balanced perfectly, the lines work together very well; there is just a harmony between the various elements of the design that is often seen.
The M treatment is what really makes the car though; the standard car is attractive but benign. The M6 is much more aggressive and youthful. Under the hood, the M6 continues with its billing as the coupe model of the 5-Series lineup, raiding from the M5’s parts bin. The car is powered by the same 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 making 560 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. 0-62 mph takes 4.2 seconds. For now, there is one transmission option – the dual-clutch seven-speed unit from the M5.
With all that power you’re going to need a heavy-duty braking system, and the M6 doesn’t fail in that regard. The rotors jump out at you, in plain sight thanks to the sparse, 5-spoke 19-inch M wheels. They look huge in comparison to the wheels, and the proof is in the numbers. Like the standard car, BMW will be following the interesting strategy of having the convertible model launch first. The M6 Convertible launches this June, while the coupe follows later on the summer. Like the previous generation model, expect the M6 to be one of the most expensive models in the BMW lineup, just below the 750Li.
