Hi Seattleforge! I’m also a rain-soaked Seattlite in my 2007 GTI. I still LOVE my car through and through. I was wondering if you’ve had any major problems with yours? I’ve only had to have a timing belt tightened. Also, where do you go to have it serviced?

The new suspension from 2010 Volkswagen GTI is really amazing.This new GTI gets an outstanding 38.7 mpg highway.

The good news is I haven’t had it worked on. The bad news is that after year three I can plan to work on it a lot.
The risk of the complicated build is that the cost of building the car goes up. To keep costs down things get hurried up. That’s had an effect on the reliability.
Orders in Wolfsburg were to lose nothing and simplify the build. This lowers the cost, enables them to sell in the US with the weakened dollar and still cut a profit. It’ll also ensure greater reliability.

That’s a really good point about the engineering aspect of the new GTI, and I think it’s definitely in the right direction. Is yours pretty expensive to work on?

Just a couple things: those are the premium wheels that they’ve had on the GTI since 2006. My 2008 has them, except the blacked out bits used to be a graphite gray.
It’s a great little car and the 2010 model should have greater reliability than the previous version which was a very complicated build. The direction VW engineers were given was to lose nothing in quality feel and performance but to make the car simpler to build to reduce time to build.
The only gripe I have of my GTI two years in is that the doors have no gutter system at all. The aerodynamic shape means that when I do open the door in rainy seattle I am definitely getting wet.
