GM is a LIAR. They falsely claim that the reason the EV1 "failed" was "range issue". But none of the EV1 drivers complained about range, and were willing to buy the EV1 on a "salvage title" which absolves GM of all liability.

To this day, GM is LYING about the EV1, and still trying to prove that EVs are impossible or unwanted. That's why they are supposedly "launching" the VOLT-hoax in Nov., 2010, which is the WRONG season to launch, when gas prices drop and sales drop. This was the same lie that GM did to the EV1, launching it in Nov. 1996, with defective GM-Delco Lead batteries, hoping it would die by spring.

Who thinks GM will be tomorrow's world leader in electric motor technology? I'd like to believe it, but I can't. If it takes a huge DOE subsidy to get the plant built and another $7500 in federal money (plus possibly some money from states) to get a buyer to consider buying a volt, maybe it isn't worth the trouble?
