Mercedes SLR Stirling Moss

NewSLRSide

In the words of Lando Calrissian, “What have we here?!”

What we have is Mercedes going a little crazy time with the SLR again. This is what, the 3rd? 4th?, something like that, time that Merc has rolled out a custom version of their (and McLaren’s) uber-car, the SLR. In this instance it’s the SLR Stirling Moss, which will have a limited production run of only 75 copies.

There are a number of reasons why this is an interesting car, to find out why, see more pretty pictures and read the press release, join me after the jump.

More than just a pretty … well, not sure if I could call this pretty, but it IS striking. What Mercedes have done is make a short production run of modified new SLRs as sort of a mechanical tribute to the old SLRs, specifically the old SLR driven by Stirling Moss (and navigated by Dennis Jenkinson) to a stunning overall victory in the 1955 Mille Miglia. That was the fastest ever running of the Mille Miglia, with Moss & Jenks completing the 1000 miles in a little over ten hours.

Consider that for a second. Consider someone saying to you, “I’m going to drive from Seattle to San Francisco, using the coast highway, and I’m going to do it 10 hours.”

Does that sound plausible? It did to Mercedes back in ’55, and Moss & Jenkinson actually did it.

OldSLR

So, Mercedes have created this.

It cranks out 650 hp from its V8 supercharged engine, and can do the zero to 100 KPH sprint in less than 3.5 seconds, and has a top speed of 350 km/h. Not bad huh?

I really like this. It's not pretty, but it's very cool-looking. I love that they took the technology from the modern SLR and applied it to a very classic styling, particularly from the side-view. Excellent; one of the very few modern Mercs I'd love to have.

I think this would be a good candidate for a Batmobile. Picture dual cockpits with ejection pods.
