Today in other news about the economic meltdown comes this little tidbit: “Dubai Prince Gifts Island To Michael Schumacher”.
Well, glad to know that some of us are doing OK, you know, regular folks like frickin’ Princes from Dubai.
Now, I’m not saying that Schumacher doens’t deserve this, he is, after all, the most successful race driver in history. Yes, I will agree with you that having your own personal island is more than a little excessive, even if you happen to be Dubai’s crown prince, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and have a few spare islands to give away (God, the mind reals with that concept), but still, who needs their own island?
Now, I’m not saying I would have some ideas with what I COULD do if I found myself in that situation.
A tank paintball range, multiple race tracks, airfield and hanger complex, The Laboratory where I am working on Power X that will allow me to enslave all mankind … but I’m getting ahead of myself.
Anyway, the crown prince’s gift rings in at $7 million, which is quite hefty, and also less than what Schumacher donated to Indonesian tsunami victims (which was 10 million Euros, or around 13 million dollars at the time). I haven’t seen whether he’s accepted the gift or not, and I see no reason why he wouldn’t, but still, it does strike me as being a little bit flashy for a guy like MS. Yes, he does live in a LARGE house on the shores of Lake Geneva, but his daily ride is a minivan. It a lot of ways, off the track, he’s kind of retiring and not the sort to show up in a Hummer limo at the strip club with the paparazzi in tow.
It’ll be interesting to see how this turn out.
And no, that’s not a shot of the actual island, it’s a PhotoShop. Most of you should (hopefully) recognize that the “island” on the right has Ferrari’s Fiorano test track on it.
