As a GT-R owner all I can say is "Haters gonna hate."

Saying a car has soul and emotion is as lame as MTs "Gotta have it factor".

It's simply a way of making excuses for lesser vehicles.

The GT-R is a joy to drive, to steal Apple's marketing line "It just works." There's no drama, no learning curve, you just press the gas and point it where you want to go and it does the rest.

FACT: The GTR is exceptional
FACT: The engineering that produced the GTR is exceptional

The GTR wasn't designed to be "driven to the shops and church once a week", it was desgined to belittle everything else around it, something it does quite easily.

The handling, the extreme power and pick up between gears, yes, between gears is nothing short of amazing.

Yes, GTR and Skyline fans are rejoicing all over the world and who wouldn't be, the sheer fact that it is a GTR is enough to turn anybody's head, but one more thing that gets everybody's attention, the power when it takes off and that's before looking at/feeling any of the known facts and specs of this vehicle.

An old saying does come to mind, what was it, oh,
Never judge a book by its a cover

If that wasn't enough, the GT-R recently completed a lap of Norschleife, Nurburgring, in 7:29. A feat which Porsche to this day, claims as impossible.

Bring it on I say

Alright, so I finally drove the GT-R, and I liked it quite a lot. While all of the reports of it having no "soul" or "personality" were actually quite accurate, I didn't care while driving it. You aren't going to mistake this car for a Ferrari or Lambo, and you're not supposed to. Driving a Ferrari is something you just can't explain. The GT-R isn't like that and Nissan didn't want it to be, so people need to stop trying to compare them (Will, I'm not saying you were, but some do.) The GT-R is a mega-fast car that does everything right in a technical sense and is super-fun to drive, while providing a (relative) bargain dollar-for-performance.

Sigh.

This is what I'm talking about: die-hard GT-R fanatics like Bill, Kris, and Andy. You guys are so narrow-minded that you won't open up yourselves to new ideas, that is, that your favorite car just might not be the best thing ever made.

Little Billy... Jesus says that the charitable thing to do when slapped is to turn the other cheek, and I was raised Christian, so instead of ripping you I'm going to make an honest effort to placate you.

Let me make one point clear: I have not yet driven the GT-R. Therefore I must resort to the opinions given by the MT and Automobile editors. When I say the car is emotion-less, perhaps you failed to realize that I quoted MT. In fact, every honest magazine review on the GT-R makes some mention of its "video game persona". You obviously do not think so, but just what exactly makes pouting Little Billy here more knowledgeable than America's leading automotive experts?

Andy, of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder, that's why the car biz is as interesting as it is. If you are entitled to your opinion, am I not entitled to mine? It seems, sir, that you have a basic misunderstanding of how ride quality is judged. Every manufacturer could set up their cars with super stiff springs, but then ride quality sucks. Sheer performance is easy, what's hard is finding that magic spot that gives shocking performance without destroying comfort.

Kris... all I can say is that it looks like someone has a case of "I drive an '81 Honda with three cylinders"...

Chris, you have my thanks for respecting and supporting an honest opinion. We do not agree on the GT-R, but I'm glad that you aren't the narrow-minded type. I knew this article would generate controversy, which is partly why I wrote it.

Wow, that was a long response. I’m done now, hopefully you guys can understand my points.

driven 240z,300zxTT,porche Targa, Carrera Turbo, corvette, toyota Supra TT, miata tuned, honda s2000, acura nsx, toyota mr2 turbo, bmw m3,m5 ... GT-R drive like none of them, i can't believe how continuous boost/performance it has w/o any clutch/shift lags, it flows straight period. all other performance cars always need that certain RPM in order to kick no matter how much hp u have. as for looks, wide body monstrous, sharp cut blades between curves that any man can adore, (a manly Samurai), if you don't like go screw your Prius & Pontiac Aztec...... it's mind blowing enjoyment... for Porsche to make a claim that Nissan cheated, is already doing justice for the GT-R and earning it "Car of the Year 2009"! The Soul of the car is transformed with transitions from steering, gas pedal, shifts, and braking. Go ride one!

Bill, I never said I was an expert, so quit making assumptions. In fact, my exact words were "I haven’t driven it, so I can’t say one way or the other. Based on what I've seen, I actually like the GT-R quite a bit, but I'll make my final decision after driving it."

You seem to have missed my point as well, and that wasn't to say that the GT-R isn't a good car - I like the car. I was simply defending Will's opinion, and the possibility that it's not all it's cracked up to be. Since you're so quick to jump to conclusions, I'll reiterate: I've never driven the car, so I don't know - I was simply defending the possibility, just as I would with any car, before driving it.

My age is irrelevant, as is yours, although you seem rather immature for 66. I own this website, and drive a new car each week (for review,) so rest assured I have plenty of experience with cars as well, including supercars - some with "soul" and some without.

In my experience, the difference is in how the car is made. Some supercars are made with the specific intention of making them ultra-fast. The cars with this "soul" or personality are the ones made for driving enjoyment and well as speed. When driving these cars, it's easy to tell how the car was made. That's an over-simplification, but hopefully you get the idea.

Chris - I OWN one. And yes I have driven it, and driven it, and driven it, and driven it... and YOU haven't. So what the hell makes you an expert?
I got one of the first GT-Rs in AZ (July 11, 2008). If you don't believe me, I'll provide the VIN number and pix of me taking delivery of the car off the truck at the dealer in Prescott, AZ
And you damn well DON''T know "my type" - just what is "my type" according to you? All I can say is I'm glad I'm not YOUR type, e.g. the big-mouth know it all type. I'm 66 and have had plenty of experience with many, many cars in the last 50 years. How old are you? 20?
And no, I don't understand what "soul" and "emotion" are according to YOU! I know what they are according to me, but "my type" is wrong. Please explain for me Einstein, since you know it all.

So you like the numbers and statistics of the car, but you still hate it because it's "ugly"? Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, everyone has different tastes. Then the 'soul/ personality'.... and a bad or uncomfortable ride is complmentary to performance. Everyone knows that a performance parts has stiffer springs and suspension, plus the tires are different so it can hug the road, which in turn, results in the driver or passenger being able to feel every minor bump in the road. so get things right before you bash on the car or others who like it.

You're missing the point Bill. Fortunately, I know your type, and understand the way you think. You see the graphs in Motor Trend and Automobile magazine after their test drive and drool over the numbers: 0-20, 0-30, 0-60, 5-60, 40-60, 100-0, slalom speed, lateral Gs, front/rear weight distribution, etc. Then you make your decision on whether you like the car based on those numbers. 95% of the readership of those magazines do the same, so you're not the only one.

The problem here is that if you like those numbers in the magazine, then you go bash anyone who doesn't like that car.

If you don't understand what soul and emotion is in a car as you stated, then I wouldn't understand you to get what Will is trying to say here. The Nissan GT-R is a finely tuned car, capable of much more than it should be capable of. That doesn't mean it's a pleasure to drive, it just means that it's fast.

When we drove the Mercedes McLaren SLR last month, it had the same problem. It was incredibly fast, but didn't have any soul, or personality. The slower Audi R8 was more pleasant to drive. Just because a car is fast, doesn't mean it's a good car.

That's not to say the GT-R is a bad car, by any means. I haven't driven it, so I can't say one way or the other. Based on what I've seen, I actually like the GT-R quite a bit, but I'll make my final decision after driving it.

Bill - have you driven the Nissan GT-R?

Bill – have you driven the Nissan GT-R?

+1. This guy gets so many points wrong that it's just silly. The GTR is definitely not the coolest thing on the planet, but it's a damn sight better than most cars.

If you're going to write an automotive blog, try coming up with some new ideas rather than just regurgitating facts and statistics with an overly generous seeding of last years' conversational fodder.

Articles like these just reek of jealous envy. People can either appreciate the car for the technical engineering and cost-consciousness of it, or they can despise it for doing most things exceptionally well.

I'm so sick of these so-called auto experts dumping on the GT-R. They bandy about the words "soul" and "emotion" like they are metaphysical experts.
Just what is "soul"? and "emotion" in a car? I doubt they can answer that. They are like so many lemmings joining the bandwagon of negativity about a fantastic automobile.
I'd like to know if this fool has driven one. If he has and gets no emotional thrill, then he is a zombie.
Oh, but then he goes on to say, even though the car is no good, it deserves car of the year award. What a jerk!
We don't need any backhanded compliments from these journalistic fools.
They should go back to writing about the soul-laden and highly emotional cars like the Prius or Ford Flex.
Excuse me, I have to go throw up now.
