GLK Urban Whip

Remember that scene in Dr. Strangelove when the president tells the Soviet premier that “… one of our base commanders, he had a sort of… well, he went a little funny in the head… you know… just a little… funny.”

I imagine that’s what was going on in Stuttgart explaining to the staid, buttoned down members of the Mercedes board just how in the hell they let this one see the light of day.

What you see here is the GLK Urban Whip. Which Mercedes says, in all seriousness, “GLK Urban Whip is the name given by Boulevard Customs from St. Petersburg, Florida to its creation, which makes its entrance with a significantly widened bodyshell, massive 26 inch wheels and a mighty on-board entertainment system that, according to the figures, is likely to have an impact at full blast of seismological proportions.”

Uh-huh … OK, I guess they’re going for the gansta demo, circa 1998, and that really doesn’t bother me. What bothers me is that they decided to have fun with a GLK, a ute for the well-healed soccer mom.

Why couldn’t they have “had a little fun” with something like the SLK?

Take that “little” (by Mercedes standards) sportscar and pull the retractable roof, chop that windshield, put in racing seats, pull the carpet. Would that be so hard?
