Audi R8 Spider Convertible

Audi R8 Convertible

I think I just got sick to my stomach. Above is a picture of the upcoming Audi R8 Spider, to be unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show. Disgusting, isn’t it?

I absolutely love the current Audi R8. In fact it’s one of my favorite cars of all time. Turning it into a soft-top is a disgrace. Some cars should be left alone as coupes – the way they were meant to be. This is one of them. Please Audi, don’t do this to me.

See below for more images and a video of the R8 Spider. Tell me how it is, I couldn’t watch the whole thing:

Maybe with the top down it is tolerable, but otherwise I agree. Total shite. Only redeeming quality of that video was it still had that sweet R8 sound.

  2. Chris says:

Yeah, still has the gorgeous R8 sound, but that's all it has going for it.

personally i think this looks far superior to the original coupe. that thing on the side was just ugly and the car looked disproportioned, like a boxster. jeremy clarkson certainly agrees that the coupe is fugly. now with the convertible that piece of garbage on the side of the car is gone and it looks much better as a result. everyone can have an opinion. thankfully i'm right on this one.

  4. Chris says:

Rob, I bet you like how the Audi TT looks too, don't you? That's kind of how this "R8" looks now. The sideblade is what gave the R8 coupe its stance. Made it aggressive and "forward-moving." Without it, it's just one more sports coupe (or now, a roadster.)

  5. rob s says:

first off, i respect the R8 immensely. in terms of every day usability and performance it's in a class in of itself. i'm not saying it'll blow the doors of many other supercars, far from it. but from what i've read the thing is just an absolute joy to drive. also, my last line was just meant to ruffle feathers. that aside, the R8 is just ugly. if that sideblade was put on it to make it look "forward-moving" and different, then i suppose it succeeded on one of it's goals. That being different(and ugly). i don't think it makes it look rakish at all and instead makes it appear taller than it is. i'm happy to accept you think the car looks good but compared to old jaguar e-types, my personal favourite the F40, and other beautiful cars like the gallardo or SL65 AMG BS i think it is clearly lacking. just like most Audis in the looks department. and no, I've always though the TT was a way overpriced toy for douche bags. I'd take an S2000 in a heartbeat over that thing.

The first picture actually looks alright, cause it still has the side blades.

The following pics are just strange. I look at it, and I think "Audi R8", but I don't feel "Audi R8". Know what I mean? It no longer looks aggressive, it no longer has that supercar echo. And in the last pic it looks out of proportion (is it me or is the ass just waay to long?)

Solution: screw this and get the Aston Martin V-8 Vantage. Now that's a roadster done right.

  7. rob s says:

would you say the pagani zonda also has too long of an ass? clearly i'm in the minority on this one but that's okay. i just think the convertible looks better than the original.

and i agree with your solution. maybe you'll be driving a superford but astons are perfectly proportioned machines. with possibly the best engine note on the planet.

I think it looks great and with the hood down in the summer it will be stunning
