Safety, Longevity Concerns Could Curtail NYC’s Hybrid Taxi Plans

Crunch Taxi

Did they say safety?

Have you ever ridden in a New York city taxi?

I remember once, after bombing through was seemed like our 62 red light in a row and screeching to a stop , a New York hack turned to me and said, “Yah, you can do a lotta tings wit ya life, but me? I decided to run my own trackless roller coaster!”

So, hearing that the NYC taxi guys are concerned about “safety” sounds sort of like Keith Moon being concerned about drug use.

But I can see what they’re saying, in principle.

Seems there’s a law in NYC that requires the use of partitions in taxi cabs; you know, that crusty plexiglass divider between you and the … Driver? Really? Yeah, I GUESS you could call that driving.

Anyway, seems that in a bigger taxi, there’s more than enough room between the passengers and the divider, but in smaller cars, that’s an issue. And since NYC will be requiring that taxis get a minmum of 25 MPG in the near future … you can see the problem.
